Terence "Bud" Crawford: Spence Down, Canelo To Go?
By Chris Osborn On July 29th, 2023, Terence “Bud” Crawford dispatched Errol Spence Jr. in dominant fashion. He did so with as much cunning, calculation and ferocity as have ever been displayed in a boxing ring. Most boxing insiders picked Crawford to win, but very few expected the domination that took place in this match. Continue reading Untitled

♫ I Heard It Through The Grapevine ♫ (Redux)
Not quite two years (December 2022) since I last played this one, but I’m in the mood for some Motown tonight and this is the one that came to mind second! (First was “What’s Goin’ On”). The news of the past few days has really taken a toll on my psyche, and there ain’t nothin’ quite like Motown and Marvin to restore some of that lost mojo/energy! This song was written by Norman Whitfield and…

I didn’t see the original Black holiday music post but I’m surprised no one has mentioned “A Motown Christmas” (1973) album. I have to listen to it all the way through every year to even begin to get into the spirit of things. It does include many of the artists mentioned and more!: Jackson 5, Nat King Cole, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Supremes, and Smokey Robinson. 1999 version has a Marvin Gaye addition.
I love love love this album 💕💕💕
A classic! And there's not an original post bc it was less of an official event and me saying "hey, I'll be sharing my favorite Black Holiday artists, if you have any feel free to share". 👍🏾

It wasn't until Marvin's teenage years that he became a frustrated jock. Like singing, he initially thought sports would be a girl-magnet for him, so he tried his hand at football, basketball, golf, even boxing. He really wasn't very good at any of them. His feet were bad, which is why I always beat him when we raced. Outclassed as he was, he never packed it in. He always felt he had what it took to be an athlete.
As teenagers we had worked as caddies, thanks to our neighbor Mr. Hawkins, who got us jobs at Marbeck Country Club in D.C. As we grew older, we would drive around together, and whenever we'd see kids playing hoops, he'd stop the car and join them in their pickup games. Later, once Marvin had signed with Motown, he and Smokey Robinson became regulars on Detroit's Palmer Golf Course. Golf wasn't his game either, but he kept at it, betting on every round and always losing. One time, he had a big-time wager with Smokey that had Anna fuming, even during the early days of their marriage. Marvin had started out sailing across the course, barely blinking as he made putt after putt on the greens. He was so confident that he bet his house on Outer Drive on the next putt. It was only a short distance, and he could make it with ease, he thought. He missed. To rub it in, Smokey later drove Marvin and Anna past their former home and said, 'Remember when you used to live there?'
The next thing I knew, Marvin announced that he was thinking of getting into professional football. 'You're messing with me,' I said on hearing that news. 'I'm serious, bro,' he replied. 'I've been working out with Smokey, jogging, doing push-ups, jumping jacks, and all that to get into shape. Mel Farr and Lem Barney are getting me a tryout with the Lions.'
'The Detroit Lions or Barnum and Bailey?' I asked. 'C'mon, don't even try to discourage me. Smokey said I'm insane but he's hanging in with me, because you know what? I'd rather catch a pass and score a touchdown in Tiger Stadium than rack up another gold record.' 'I gotta see that,' I said. 'You'll be the first to get tickets to the game,' he told me. True to his word, Marvin not only was invited to the Lions' training camp, he showed up on time. Marvin on time? That was a first, I said, teasing him. He ignored my remark. I should have known why he wasn't in a playful mood. He didn't say it in so many words, but he admitted he didn't do very well. In other words, he got his butt kicked. Marvin still wouldn't give up on sports, though. Not yet anyway. He had another idea that had nothing to do with singing, he said. 'It's boxing, isn't it?' I asked. It was about the only thing he hadn't tried, and he had always liked it. Growing up, Marvin and I were never allowed to hit anything. Since then, he had overcome his shyness, and being rebellious and aggressive, I thought he might do fairly well in the ring, but then again, his footwork was lousy. 'Maybe it's boxing and maybe it's not. I'm not saying what it is right now,' he said. 'It might happen soon and it might happen later. I'll let you know.'
