Like yes it is a children’s cartoon where the episodes have lessons attached but the lessons are actually things I needed to know as a kid! Like “don’t feed the trolls” and “it’s ok to be nervous at your first sleepover” and “infodumping isn’t shameful” and “how you can help your friends feel special and valued.”

I’m really enjoying Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. I’ve jokingly been referring to the “MGCU” (”Moon Girl Cinematic Universe”) for the last few months, usually in the context of discussing characters that I would rather appear in the Moon Girl animated series then in the MCU proper...

That said, uh, Maria Hill of S.H.E.I.L.D. is going to be in the show? Performed by Cobie Smulders, like in the MCU???

It’s just a guest role, of course, but it’s kind of funny to me that this isn’t being advertised as MCU-adjacent if it is going to include MCU cameos? Like, there is a multiverse for a reason. You can just say it’s some other corner of the multiverse that won’t have direct crossovers outside of, like, theme park events...

Though I’ll admit that I am biased and I am really hoping we see less MCU characters as guest heroes and more of the younger (and often more diverse) heroes that haven’t made it into the MCU yet. Specifically, I feel like Nadia Van Dyne / the Wasp and her fellow Agents of G.I.R.L. fit the themes of Moon Girl... almost perfectly?

In the comics, Nadia Van Dyne is a girl genius who escaped the Red Room (the Russian assassin training program that also trained Black Widow) and fled to New York City. Once in New York, she was inspired by Moon Girl and the institutional sexism baked into SHIELD’s list of the smartest people in the world to recruit a bunch of girl geniuses from across New York city to form an all-girl scientist team. In other words, her story is an all-ages superhero story with a focus on encouraging interest in STEM and highlighting the diversity of New York City... just like what MM&DD is setting out to do.

I wouldn’t expect Nadia and G.I.R.L. to be important - the focus is and should remain on Lunella, her family, and her classmates - but I could see an episode happening where Nadia shows up and announces the creation of GIRL to Lunella, they team up for a bit, probably having a conversation about Nadia’s disability (she has bipolar disorder) in the process, and GIRL becomes an off-screen source of intel that Lunella can tap into... and if this show can get Nadia to explicitly acknowledge her asexuality on-screen using the word “asexual,” then everyone involved will earn my undying respect!

i’m enjoying marvel’s moon girl and devil dinosaur and i hope y’all are too!! the art style is incredible and there’s a bunch of references to other animated shows (ex: naruto). i hope y’all give it a watch, it comes out on feb 15 on d+ and on disney channel, there’s already 2 episodes out!

I’m just giving this a watch for the first time myself and I definitely feel like I am picking up vibes between Lunella and Casey too

Holy shit I just watched the most amazing first episode of a new show!

Okay, reasons why everyone should watch 'Moon Girl'… GO!

It's got so much style. Creative art direction, bright colours, excellent music, etc. I will warn that there's a lot of flashing for anyone who is sensitive to that kind of thing.

The main character, Lunella aka Moon Girl, is a delight. She's smart, driven, full of sunshine, brave, caring, and a mutual aid queen! Like she's out there not just fighting crime, but serving the community in all the ways she can. I love her so much!

Representation. She's a young Black girl for one, and her best friend Casey is Pueto Rican-Jewish. I think there may be a queer romance blossoming between them, but we'll see. (I could just be reading something into their relationship that the writers didn't intend.) The way this show represents low socio-economic/POC-dominated neighbourhoods feels refreshing too, but I'm also not the most qualified to judge that since I'm white and from Australia, so I don't have lived experience to compare the setting against.

The bond Lunella has with her dinosaur sidekick is so precious! It forms quickly, but feels organic.

I really love Casey's character too. She's obsessed with social media and being an influencer, but she isn't made out to seem shallow or mean because of it. She's really supportive and encouraging of Lunella while still being her own person, and I can see those two going far together.

Lunella's family is amazing! Especially the grandma. I can see why Lunella is so motivated to protect them and bring them all the support she can.

I actually teared up. And this is only the beginning of what I'm sure will be an amazing series.

In conclusion... watch Moon Girl. Watch it, and then let's grow the fandom! I want this to be the next big cartoon show that everyone is obsessed with. Please can we make that happen!

Even if it's unlikely, I'm hoping that sometime in the future (maybe Season 2 or hopefully 3) Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur will introduce Galacta, the daughter of Galactus! She only had a one-shot comic, but I see so much potential in a character like her, especially if she becomes Lunella and Casey's new BFF and superhero ally (she could have a transformation like Sailor Moon’s).

Of course, they'll have to make the costume less revealing! I’d also love it if one of Galactus’ Heralds is her guardian while on Earth and that Herald would be Terrax!

I can’t wait to see how crazy this will get! (Especially because I made sure to include some non-human options). I feel like I can guess the outcome knowing this site, but maybe I will be pleasantly surprised. Have fun and remember to pick wisely. Don’t do it to be ironic!

Casey and Rainbows

So since episode one, I have felt like Casey maybe LGBT+, although given her Dads it is very possible she is just an ally. But just a few things of note;

1. When she gives Lunella her card during the first episode, it is one stripe short of a Pride Flag.

2. During the sleepover episode she has a Pride Flag sleeping bag.

3. In “Coney Island Baby” she says that she always eats something colourful before going on rides so if she vomits it is rainbow coloured.

Girl really likes rainbows to the point I feel she is hinting at something. Like I say, she may simply be an ally, especially considering her Dads but this isn’t simply the only reason I think she is LGBT+.

Like there is the way she initially acts around Lunella, however this can be put down to the fact she is socially awkward and then of course in “Today I Am a Woman”, one of her Dads saying that Moon Girl is “a keeper”.

I’ll give at this stage it is relatively weak evidence, but it is stuff I can’t help but notice none the less.
