Analysis of Kikuo's song - のぼれ!すすめ!高い塔
youtube
Every single one of Kikuo's song are mind-blowing. Truly a work of art. This is my interpretation of what the song is about.
There's this tall tower, so tall that being at the bottom no one can truly know what lies at the top without climbing it. And so, out of curiosity, people encourage one another to climb it. There are rumours that if you climb it once, you find an amusement park; if you climb twice, the red light district; and if thrice, you find paradise that no one wants to come down from. But if no one who has found paradise has ever come down, how do people at the bottom know that it is paradise? The whole premise of this struggle is based on rumours, speculation, and hope. Bittersweet hope of finding a place you would never want to come down from. This is what society often teaches us ever since we are born, that if you work hard and struggle, you will find fulfilment, or find 'heaven' or 'paradise' after you die. So we keep encouraging one another to build the tower higher and higher to find paradise i.e. meaning in our suffering.
(0:54) A man who took a hit by a 'demon' is frozen and buried after he fell while climbing. But you must keep climbing.
(1:10) The people who are building the tower higher say "so lonely, with so much suffering, sorrowful blood is flowing from this tower now. all of us used by as bait, never to return again. unable to see a thing of the world down below." They are building the tower using each other's flesh.
(1:37) And so all of this loneliness, suffering and exhaustion causes people to look for an escape, which is when they find "a mysterious rain; a drink that will wash away your pain" which implies alcohol or drugs. A substance that will instantly make you happy and craving for more. "You'll realise one drop will never be enough." And so, people trample each other to get more of it. "We want happy rain to fall upon us; we will tie people up and start stacking bodies - long before we noticed, humans were buried." But no one stops and looks. The message is still to build higher and climb higher because there's no point in stopping now. All this time, many of them knowing that they are heading towards an unachievable goal but can't bring themselves to stop.
(3:27) "A tower that's built so tall but not wide enough; a fragile tower that is built of flesh and blood - now it all crumbles down." Because it had no solid foundation, it was run on pure escapism and madness of people who are at each other's throats. "When all we wanted was to live high up above, gradually all of us are broken into pieces." And then, the ones who barely survived realise there is nothing down here to live for. And they spot the relic, which they believe will bring them ever-lasting happiness 'to wash away the pain', and so they start building again.
"Climb higher! Advance! The high tower!" To what end? To nothingness. The cycle repeats. This is the story that humanity is doomed to follow. With no one to blame and no one to save us.

Yuki Sohma: "Was she always this small?"
Tumblr media
This is a crucial scene where he stands up to his over controlling mother, and suddenly realises how small she really is. Yuki, after all these years of bearing it, finally takes autonomy over his own life. That he has thoughts of his own.
Tumblr media
That he gets to decide what happens to his life. To rightfully say, "I'm doing this whether you like it or not. Don't decide it for me." And that it doesn't matter whether she approves of it or not.
Overcontrolling parents - think they're doing this for our own good, that the decisions that they make for us are always the right ones since they "know everything" and we're young and naive. But this level of abandoning of a child's narrative and decisions causes the child to never learn how to make their own choices, in fact, to be afraid of their own choices since they don't feel like a whole person. Yuki went by his own life watching it from the sidelines, just watching things happen to him instead of having a part in it. His life always being the outcome of other people's choices.

When we are kids, that parent may seem like The Parent, our guider, our caregiver, we have to do as they say because we depend on them. And so we always feel so small in front of them. And then one day, you build a little more courage, trust yourself a little bit more than you can afford to, and take a step, and you see - the parent is just a person. Not an undefeatable, enormous being. Just a person. And suddenly, you're not so small anymore.
