At Passover, the Jewish community must break up over genocide
Blind Israel support in AIPAC funding appeal sent to Phil Weiss’s mother’s house. April 2024.
It’s a beautiful day in my town and I am going to go out for a walk with full awareness of my blessings. I don’t live in Gaza where the innocent are murdered day in and day out with U.S. weaponry and Joe Biden’s imprimatur (and that of many running dogs such as Jonathan Capehart and David Brooks on PBS News Hour). I don’t live in Israel, where I would have been indoctrinated in a supremacist ideology from a young age, and made to hate and fear Palestinians and to cheer genocide— and where I would have struggled to ever understand myself as a Jew. No, I live in the most privileged country in the world where there are wonderful freedoms for someone of my class.
Tomorrow is Passover so this is a message to my Jewish community. We must break up over Zionism. We must break up over genocide. Too many innocent people (on all sides) have died for this false and bigoted ideology to go on.
The good news is that some in the Jewish community are at last awaking from sleep over this. We will see more and more allies come forward in the Peter Beinart tradition—Jews who once drank the Koolaid – Beinart used to do events for AIPAC, and supported the Iraq war for Marty Peretz — and who have walked a path of independence.
Many of those Jews will come to have solidarity with the victims and the martyrs and the persecuted: the indigenous Palestinian population, driven from their homes to make way for the alleged liberation of the Jewish people.
“In my view, the Zionist narrative, even in its more liberal forms, cultivates an exclusivity and proprietary ethos that too easily slides into ethnonational chauvinism,” Shaul Magid of Indiana University writes in his new book. “
A simple, truer message to Jews was never spoken– by a former liberal Zionist. I urge my community to open its eyes to the grotesque armored thing that is modern Israel, and denounce its actions if only in order to save ourselves. (Because as the great rabbi said, If you are not for yourself who will be.) And yes it’s true: Palestinians who denounce Israel are pleasing their grandparents and parents; and we are not; but as Scott Roth used to say, that is the lamest fucking excuse for a thoughtful person in America.
Yesterday many progressives voted against more bombs for Israel (among others Bowman, Balint, Bush, Carson, Frost, Jayapal, Khanna, Summer Lee, McGovern, Omar, Pingree, Pocan and Pressley); and in a notable break Jamie Raskin voted against. So let us celebrate the memory of his son Tommy a great Jewish idealist and anti-Zionist who left us three years ago.
Zionism is today a danger to Jews. It is destroying free speech in our country (in the name of the Jews). It is destabilizing the Middle East (in the name of the Jews). Israel is wantonly attacking a foreign consulate in a neighboring country (in the name of the Jews). And so this Jewish identity, promulgated by Zionists, will only hurt Jews.
In the Forward last week, Jodi Rudoren, who has carried the water for Israel for years, wrote that Israel must stop killing Palestinians for the sake of “world Jewry.” And in a further heresy, she said, “antisemitism… is not an explanation for everything.”
She means that people are protesting Israel’s actions, not Jews. I believe she sees what I see, People will turn on our community for its blind support for genocide. Because what keeps Israel going in its violations of international law? The blind backing of the Israel lobby, the organized American Jewish community, never called out by the media for such, but everyone knows. As Obama said in 2015, there is only one country against the Iran deal; and today there is one country that wants the genocide to continue (and compels progressive politicians in the U.S. to violate their creed to ship more weapons).
There is another Jewish story. The brave Jewish students who are demonstrating at Columbia. The IfNotNow protesters at Biden rallies. The Jewish presence in the broad antiwar movement in the United States. They are moved by human rights and opposing the endless slaughter of children and women. They are “not hate-filled and bigoted… fringes,” as David Brooks, a longtime Zionist said of the protests on the PBS News Hour.
The Jewish protesters are today the leaders of our religious community. They are bringing an uncomfortable truth to a huddled, fearful, self-involved congregation. They are the heroes of Jewish history. They will save the world, and maybe too the lost Jewish tabernacle in the deserts of militarism.
Happy holidays,

Is the Jewish World Ready for Itamar Ben-Gvir?
In 2009, Marty Peretz called Avigdor Lieberman a fascist.
My how the world turns.
Today, of course, Lieberman is effectively a centrist figure in Israeli politics, who seems more inclined to form coalitions with the left-of-center bloc than the right-wing.
Some of that reflects changes in Lieberman -- he has moderated somewhat from where he started and moved towards the center since bursting onto the Israeli political scene. But a lot of it is attributable to changes in Israel's political center of gravity, which has been lurching to the right for decades. Opinions and beliefs which were outlandish and outrageous in 2009 don't even qualify as right-wing in 2022. In 2018, Batya Ungar-Sargon could hold Naftali Bennett's feet to the fire over his open opposition to democratic rights for Palestinians. Fast forward just a few years, and Bennett is the savior figure who managed to oust the even more odiously anti-Palestinian Bibi Netanyahu out of office. What was once the extreme right in Israel now is the "moderate" bulwark against an ascendant and even further-extreme right. The world keeps turning.
And so we get to the present day, and the rise of a new extremist powerbroker in Israel: Itamar Ben-Gvir. Ben-Gvir is more than a terrorist-sympathizer, he actually was convicted of providing support to a terrorist organization. He wants to expel Arabs, he had a shrine to Baruch Goldstein, he's a disciple of Kahanism. His political character has been described as a "pyromaniac", given his lust to take combustible situations and pour gasoline on them. He's been described as a "David Duke"-like figure in Israeli politics, except unlike Duke he's actually winning office. He makes even the original flavor of Bennett or Lieberman look positively moderate. And in the very plausible event that the right-wing bloc wins the next Israeli election, Itamar Ben-Gvir is likely to receive a very prominent ministry position in the Israeli government.
The establishment of the Jewish diaspora isn't ready for this. In 2019, when Netanyahu first entered into a deal with Ben-Gvir, it received widespread condemnation from American Jewish groups (even AIPAC!). They characterized his party "racist and reprehensible". Three years later, Ben-Gvir's influence has only grown. If he does enter into government at a high level, does anyone believe groups like AIPAC are going to hold the line? That they'll follow their own logic and concede that Israel's governing coalition is seeded with the racist and the reprehensible? Or will the world turn once more, and Ben-Gvir become accommodated?
By and large, the American Jewish community has been covering its eyes regarding the surging ascendency of far-right extremism amongst the Israeli Jewish community. The tendency has been to dismiss this sort of extremism as marginal, as outliers, as the province of fringe cranks that one might find in any pluralistic political community. There is a terrified refusal to acknowledge the larger pattern, which is that folks like Ben-Gvir are not outliers, and things are getting worse, not better. "A little patience," they say "and we shall see the reign of witches pass." But it isn't passing. The cavalry isn't coming. It can happen (t)here.
The American Jewish community does not want to see Israel descend into far-right fascism. It wants, desperately, that folks like Ben-Gvir are outliers and are repudiated and can be rendered into fringe irrelevancies. But that's not happening. So what next? Unfortunately, the problem with not wanting to see something is that there's always the option to cover your eyes. Squeeze them shut and pretend the problem isn't there. Start whatabouting on Hamas or Iran or this or that. Figure out a way to accommodate and appease the new normal, in the hopes that after this, we won't go any further. Soon the reign of the witches has to pass. That is, more or less, what the global Jewish community has done for the past few decades -- it has just pretended not to see the rise of Israel's extreme right in the hopes that if it is ignored long enough, it will go away.
It's not going away. It is getting worse. And sooner or later, we have to starting thinking about what steps we need to take to arrest and reverse its momentum, rather than vainly hoping it will correct itself. I am not convinced that the American Jewish community is ready to have that conversation. But if we don't have it, folks will start having it without us.

It’s nuts not to let Norman Foster build on your cruddy high-rise
However, New Yorkers always like a good real-estate scrap, and they’ll punish anybody who tries to class ‘em up.
https://www.jta.org/2021/11/22/ny/neighbors-say-a-jewish-billionaires-penthouse-pavilion-plans-are-a-little-too-much-even-for-manhattan
New York Jewish Week via JTA) — Neighbors are objecting to the two-story glass pavilion that hedge fund manager Bill Ackman and his wife, the Israeli-born architect and designer Neri Oxman, want to build on the roof of their apartment building on Manhattan’s West 77th Street.
The dispute has pulled in some high-powered neighbors and advocates on both sides, including legendary PBS journalist Bill Moyers (he’s against) and a small “Who’s Who” of prominent Jewish New Yorkers, according to The New York Times.
Columnist Gina Bellafante reports that the dispute isn’t about historic architecture, sunlight or other similar flashpoints in New York city zoning disputes. It’s actually about what, if anything, the city will do to limit the increasing power of its billionaire class. A three-hour debate over the proposal in the Landmarks Preservation Commission, Bellafante wrote, was “about where the retaining wall ought to be erected against the desires of the magnificently wealthy to configure the world precisely to their specifications.”
Ackman made a giant windfall in March 2020 by betting that COVID would crash the economy. The Haifa-born Oxman, who teaches at MIT, has drawn wide praise for her pioneering work fusing principles of nature and sustainability into her designs. The couple — who were introduced by Marty Peretz, the former publisher of The New Republic....

So there's this new essay by Peter Beinart going around that's just every asinine bit of 1SS Binational Narnia fanfic all over again. Since absolutely nothing has actually changed, including no annexation, it makes you wonder why it would get a prominent push in the NYT now. Beinart is not exactly relevant anymore, it's like seeking out the opinions of Marty Peretz.
Anyway, the essay does not have so much as one single mention of "Mizrahim," nor of the treatment of Jews in any Arab state. It has exactly one single mention of "antisemitism," as being something pro-Palestine advocates are falsely accused of. It idealizes the paradigm of Yavne - a refuge for Torah study that was indulged by Rome after the destruction of Judea, for about 50 years until it too was destroyed. What a lofty aspiration.
Probably the best response to Beinart's essay is another one from 2018 that points out that anti-Zionists are naive and unserious and that a 1SS would almost certainly result in a Yugoslavia- or Lebanon-style civil war and ethnic cleansing. The 2018 author: Peter Beinart.
Though to be less of a smartass, here are two thorough and scholarly essays rebutting and shaming the entire concept. They’re both pretty much ideal (except for the first one having an outrageous and inappropriate reference to Bin Laden) so just read them both.

Ancient Church Dedicated to Mysterious Martyr Found Near Jerusalem
By Ariel David Oct 23, 2019
Israeli archaeologists have uncovered a Byzantine basilica built under the Emperor Justinian and decorated with stunning mosaics and glass windows, as well as an inscription that dedicates the church to a “glorious martyr". However, the martyr’s identity is not known, but the exceptional opulence of the structure and its inscriptions indicate that this person was an important figure,” said excavation director Benjamin Storchan in the IAA press release.
ᛏ Steps leading to Beit Shemesh church. ᛏ
ᛏ Inscription found on a wall at Beit Shemesh church. ᛏ
The 6th-century shrine was discovered ahead of building a new neighborhood in the town of Beit Shemesh, west of Jerusalem. It has been undergoing salvage excavation by the Israel Antiquities Authority for three years, archaeologists said at an unveiling of the site on Wednesday.
The church remained a popular pilgrimage destination through the early Islamic period. That in and of itself contributed to a longstanding debate among scholars about how violent and sudden the Muslim conquest of the Holy Land was, and the subsequent conversion of the population.
According to the IAA release, the church’s walls were painted with colorful frescoes and it was decorated with “lofty pillars crowned with impressive capitals.” The basilica was a long building with three sections that were divided by two rows of columns. It included a central nave flanked by two halls, according to the press release, and an atrium greeted pilgrims at the church’s entrance. The inscription to the “glorious martyr” is found in this courtyard.

The religious complex sprawled over 1.5 dunams (1,500 square meters) and sported several additional spaces connected to the main building, including a large courtyard in front of the church’s entrance. “Both the basilica and the courtyard are massive for the period – larger than most Byzantine churches found in the Holy Land,” says Benjamin Storchan, dig director for the IAA.
Someone Named Malchos
It was in the courtyard that researchers uncovered an intact Greek inscription dedicating the sacred site to the memory of an “endoxo martis” – a glorious martyr. (see photo below 𐰸 ) “The martyr’s identity is not known, but the exceptional opulence of the structure and its inscriptions indicate that this person was an important figure,” says Storchan.Someone Named Malchos
Text in the courtyard says that the church was completed in 542 C.E. and names the main benefactor and abbot of the monastery as someone called Malchos. Since this is a common Semitic name, which appears numerous times in various sources, it is hard to identify him further, the archaeologist says. So, scholars are turning to ancient sources--mainly pilgrimage accounts and lists of early Christian martyrs-- to try to identify this holy personality, but so far they have been unable to pinpoint it.
What we do know is that the location of the church, in a valley outside the Byzantine rural town of Beit Nativ, must somehow be linked to the martyr’s life. “It doesn’t make sense to build such a monumental structure at the bottom of a valley unless it marks the place of the death or the subsequent burial of the martyr”, Storchan says.
Inside the basilica, archaeologists were able to access the crypt that may have once housed the relics of the unnamed holy person, displayed in the underground chamber for veneration by the faithful. “Only a few churches in Israel have been discovered with fully intact crypts,” Storchan says. “The crypt was accessed via parallel staircases--one leading down into the chamber, the other leading back up into the prayer hall. This enabled large groups of Christian pilgrims to visit the place.”
The crypt was initially decorated with lavish marble panels. These were removed in a later phase and the vaulted space was covered in plaster, on which some pilgrims have left graffiti in Arabic script and the image of a fish--a typical early Christian symbol. Experts are still working to decipher the text.
ᛏ The Imperial Eagle, the symbol of the Byzantine Empire, found in the church in Beit Shemesh. Notice the colorful and intricate fruit, flora and fauna of the mosaic design. Credit: Asaf Peretz, Israel Antiquities Authority.
Imperial Eagle
Initially erected during Justinian’s reign (527-565 C.E.), the church was further enlarged through money donated by Emperor Tiberius II Constantine, who ruled from 574 to 582 C.E.
Constantine's personal involvement in the project is attested by another Greek inscription found in a large annex chapel and dated to 583 C.E. – a year after Tiberius’ death. The chapel was likely meant to memorialize the recently deceased ruler, who is evoked by a large imperial eagle with outspread wings that appears in the mosaic at the center of the chapel.
“Numerous written sources attest to imperial funding for churches in Israel, however, little is known from archaeological evidence such as dedicatory inscriptions like the one found in Beit Shemesh,” says Storchan.
After the Muslim conquest of the Holy Land in the first half of the 7th century, the complex continued to be used and the martyr worshipped, as attested by some 300 clay lamps from the early Islamic period that were found in the crypt.
The church was not destroyed and was ultimately abandoned intact in the 9th century – likely because of “economic suffocation” caused by the reduced flow of Christian pilgrims and the increasing rate of conversion to Islam among locals, Storchan says.
“We found the entrances to the church sealed with large stones, meaning the last people who were here knew they had to leave but they had time to close the doors, and they were hoping to come back,” he says.
This signals that, at least in this area, there was no wave of violent destruction and mass forced conversion associated with the Islamic conquest – something that is a matter of strong debate among archaeologists.
“A number of excavations over the last 20 years have shown that the theory of conquest by the sword is being washed away,” Storchan says. “Islamic sources may have exaggerated how quick and violent the conversion was.”
Among the thousands of objects unearthed was what may be the most complete collection of Byzantine glass windows and lamps ever found at a single site in Israel, the IAA stated. The archaeologists also found a unique baptismal font in the shape of a cross that was made with calcite stone mined from a stalactite cave.
𐰸 A stone quatrefoil (four-leaved) crucifix baptismal font was discovered at the site. It is a design that is less common to Byzantine-era Holy Land sites but is found throughout the empire, including in North Africa. 𐰸
Most of the work at the site was done by thousands of teenagers from all over the country who participated in the dig as part of an IAA program to connect Israeli youths to their heritage, the statement said.
“It started as a summer job, but after the first year I couldn’t stop and I came back as a volunteer, both here and at other sites,” says Netanel Romm, a local resident who first came to work at the church when he was 16.
Romm, who is a religious student at a yeshiva, says the project helped him learn more about Christianity and its history in the Holy Land. “Digging in a church doesn’t bother me at all. On the contrary, I didn’t know much about Christian culture before, so it is interesting for me to learn about it and about what happened during history in my own backyard,” he says.
Israel’s Ministry of Construction and Housing invested around 7 million shekels ($2 million) in the dig and a total of 70 million shekels ($20 million) in excavating and documenting the archeological finds in the planned neighborhood.
The main finds from what has now been dubbed the Church of the Glorious Martyr will be the focus of an exhibition opening Wednesday evening at the Bible Lands Museum in Jerusalem. Ahead of the exhibit opening Wednesday, Bible Lands Museum director general Amanda Weiss said in a statement, “We are proud of our collaboration with the Israel Antiquities Authority bringing to light these important new finds for the thousands of visitors from all faiths, ages, and nationalities, inviting them to appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the Land of Israel.”
Among the artifacts on display will be numerous delicate glass objects, including some of the 300 intact Abbasid-period clay lamps discovered at the site, which the press release calls “the most complete collection of Byzantine glass windows and lamps ever found at a single site in Israel.” The show is set to run until April 2020.
As for the site itself, the area of the church was not slated to house buildings for the new neighborhood, just some water pipes that now been rerouted, Storchan says. This means the basilica will be preserved, he says: experts are presently discussing how best to protect it and make it accessible to the public.

American Catholics and American Jews are not happy campers. And neither, it seems, are America’s evangelicals
This conversation didn’t happen, but it could have:
Monseigneur Vivaldi: “Have you read that Pennsylvania grand jury report? Over three hundred priests accused of sex abuse! We’ve hit rock bottom! It can’t get any worse than this!”
Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò: “Hold my beer.”
Yes, Viganò’s now notorious letter is rockin’ the church in ways that it hasn’t rocked for centuries—that is to say, in public.
The American press, which consistently applies a “see no evil” approach to reporting on the papacy, responded to the once in a millennium news of Pope Benedict’s resignation with a “Gee, I never saw that coming” shrug, as if a champion athlete retired at age 35 instead of hanging around to the ripe old age of 38.
Underneath and within the Catholic Church itself, of course, there was an immense amount of subterranean grinding—the socio-cultural equivalent of the San Andreas Fault processing a volcanic eruption on the other side of the world. Pope Francis was greeted with open arms, outwardly—“We have a pope! We have a pope!” along with lots of talk about the canonization of John Paul II, because what’s more Catholic than a canonization, and what better way to take people’s minds off their troubles?
Well, wiseguy secularized atheists like myself were not paying much attention, but a lot of Catholics were paying attention, and the more they got to know Pope Francis, the less they liked him. Earlier this year, Ross Douthat published To Change the Church: Pope Francis and the Future of Catholicism, coming pretty close to accusing the vicar of Christ of being, well, the Anti-Christ.
“This is a book about the most important religious story of our time: the fate of the world’s largest religious institution under a pope who believes that Catholicism can change in ways that his predecessors rejected, and who faces resistance from Catholics who believe the changes he seeks risk breaking faith with Jesus Christ.”
Ross in his wrath rather reminded me of one of Melville’s Polynesians, who erects a wooden statue to pray to, earnestly seeks its blessing, and then when the god fails to come through, knocks it off its perch and gives it a few solid kicks. Ross, if God allows a bad man to become Pope, maybe there isn’t one! (God, I mean.)1
Well, Ross in his wrath was surprising enough, but the Archbishop’s assault is more than any mere Protestant could have predicted.2 Viganò’s announced goal of forcing Pope Frederick’s resignation would mean two resignations in a row. Is that any way to run the Church?
I don’t think so. I think a Catholic Church that forces the resignations of two popes in a row is not the Catholic Church. It’s something else. I’ve felt for a long time that the “European” Catholic Church in the U.S. will shrivel and the American Catholic Church will become exclusively a Latin institution. The Irish and the Italians, who have sustained the American Catholic Church throughout the twentieth century, will find they have more in common with their secularized Protestant neighbors than with the Hispanic hierarchy that is starting to emerge. However brightly the current fires blaze—and they’re certainly going to blaze brightly indeed—I think the future is already set.
Okay, that takes care of the Catholics. What about the Jews? My thinking about the Jews springs from a single article in the New York Times, “The West Bank Model Is a Failure”, a remarkably even-handed—and all the more damning for being so—account of all the faults of Israeli domestic policies as they affect Palestinians living on the West Bank. What makes this article remarkable is that it was written by Marty Peretz.
Ninety-nine percent of the American people have no idea who Marty Peretz is,3 but for the one percent who do, Marty’s name is definitely one to conjure with. For decades, Marty was the owner-publisher of the New Republic, perhaps the most famous intellectual journal in the U.S. During Marty’s long tenure, the New Republic functioned as the premiere organ of liberal neocon opinion, working against the New Left and all its works. Marty’s well-heeled arrogance and favoritism (he married an heiress but seemed to have an eye for stunning young lads) alienated everyone who didn’t make the A team.
Marty was, naturally, a vociferous supporter of the invasion of Iraq, and the multiple disasters that sprang from that corrupt enterprise helped destroy his influence among the younger generation of chin-strokers. The New Republic changed hands in 2010 and Peretz, as far as I could tell, lapsed into silence. But now he’s back, and talking about Israel as he’s never talked before. And if Israel has lost Marty, it’s lost all of American Jewry west of Orthodoxy.
The Times has published a number of articles in the past few years by American Jews deploring the ever rightward shift of Israeli policy in both religious and political affairs, leaving most American Jews feeling more and more left out. It was no secret that devotion to Israel was, in effect, a secular religion for many Jews. Now that mainstay is fading, even as the level of intermarriage of non-Orthodox Jews and non-Jews has reached 71%. Many Jews, I think, used to believe that “assimilation” was so far from being even remotely possible, however “assimilated” they might appear and behave, something so airy and light as to be a mere shadow's shadow, not worth even a moment's worry and thought. And now it seems to have happened, perhaps a decade back, while no one was looking.
But wait, there’s more bad news for the Jews: the lawsuit challenging Harvard with discriminating against Asians. However the particulars of that suit are settled, it’s a very good bet that the percentage of Asians at the Ivies is going to increase. It’s also a very good bet that the Ivies will be very, very reluctant to let the admission rates for blacks and Hispanics fall below their shares in the national population. Which means that something else will have to give, and that something else will very likely be the massive overrepresentation of Jews in those schools.
Six years ago, Ron Unz published a long study in the American Conservative, “The Myth of American Meritocracy”, accusing the Ivies of discriminating in favor of Jewish applicants and to the disadvantage of Asians. (As a Jewish graduate of Harvard, Unz was fairly well inoculated against charges of favoritism.) According to Unz’s article, about 25% of undergraduate students in the Ivies were Jewish, even though Jews constitute only about 2% of the total U.S. population. Asians constitute perhaps 5.6% of the population. In coming years, we’re likely to see the Asians take over as the “brains” of America. This will be softened by extensive intermarriage, but it will be noticeable. Without Harvard or Israel, where will America’s Jews turn?4
The real support for Israel among American voters, it seems, will rest almost entirely with the Evangelicals, who have their own troubles, #MeToo, of course, but even worse is the split caused by Donald Trump, who is giving the evangelicals more than anyone ever gave them, for a very ugly price. As a convinced secularist who does not believe any supernatural value system can ultimately sustain itself,5 I think it likely that “conscience evangelicals”, who have the stomach to see Trump as he is, will inevitably find themselves drawn away from religion towards secular liberalism, and the “true believers” who remain will grow inevitably more corrupt.
It isn’t emphasized enough how much the wrath of the Moral Majority and the other politicized evangelical groups that emerged in the 1970s was prompted by the ever-increasing efforts of the federal government to enforce the desegregation of southern schools, particularly the decision in the Carter Administration by the IRS to deny tax-exempt status to de facto segregated private schools, something Ronald Reagan promised to undo. Once Reagan was elected, one of the favorite causes of evangelicals was maintenance of good relations with our anti-communist and pro-apartheid pals in South Africa.6 While the moral fervor of many evangelicals was, and is, impressive, and touching, the intellectual substance of the faith has always been painfully thin. True believers had best prepared for a bumpy ride.
Only a month or two before the latest wave of revelations of sex abuse in the Church began to break, Ross, perhaps a little swept away by a “fabulous” Catholic-themed Metropolitan Museum of Art gala, sighed “Make Catholicism Weird Again”. I wonder if he’s still longing for the incense and bells. ↩︎
I am by background a secularized Protestant, but I’ve never believed in God and have never regretted it. Passionate atheists who “hate” religion bore me, but believers are likely to bore me even more. ↩︎
Word can’t even spell his name, which must pain Marty just a little, for he certainly fancied himself an important man. ↩︎
I believe it was Marty Peretz (or perhaps Irving Kristol or Norman Podhoretz) who “shocked” Gore Vidal by dismissing the American Civil War as “ancient history”. Asians will certainly have their own perspective. ↩︎
This doesn’t mean that Islam is going to resolve itself into a dew any time soon. A century from now, there will probably as many Muslims as there is now. ↩︎
Reagan was not pro-segregation, but he was very much pro-segregationist. He hated the American civil rights movement and had to be talked out of his instinctive support for the white supremacists in South Africa, who were, of course, anti-communist, which for Reagan the only thing that really counted. It’s to Reagan’s credit that he let himself be talked out of supporting apartheid, but far more to the credit of those who talked him out of it. ↩︎

Film wajib anak jurnalistik selanjutnya nih! ;)
Shattered Glass
I. Ringkasan Film
Judul Film : Shattered Glass
Tahun Produksi : 2003
Genre Film : Drama
Kemudian Marty Peretz, boss The New Republic menghukum mereka gara-gara kesalahan penggunaan tanda koma dengan menyuruh mereka melingkari setiap koma yanga ada di majalah The New Republic edisi yang lalu.
II. Apresiasi Film
“Apa kau marah padaku? Apa aku berbuat salah?”

From Blog Sin Dioses https://ift.tt/3058MzT (via IFTTT)
¡Odiar a Trump te une a esos grupos anti cristianos!"

BIG MEDIA IS JEWISH
JEWS CONFIRM BIG MEDIA IS JEWISH Editor's note: In 2002 the Jewish website "Judaism Online" posted an extensive list of Jews who dominate the American media. Since 2006 this article, with my comments, has proven one of the very most frequented at www.truthtellers.org. In this update and revision, I keep much of the original Judaism Online article (which is in italics) but delete out-of-date information. I add much more, documenting the present status of the Jewish media moguls who tell us what to believe - and degrade our morals. Unless otherwise stated, these individuals are Jewish. The names of persons who are almost certainly Jewish but unconfirmed are followed by an asterisk. Jewish control of the media is a taboo topic. In Congress, among evangelicals and mainline conservative talk radio, it is never mentioned. It is discussed only in snatches on far right alternative talk radio. This is astonishing, considering that almost every substantial library in America contains a number of books confirming such Jewish control. These include Neil Gabler’s An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood and Hoberman and Shandler’s Entertaining America: Jews, Movies, and Broadcasting. These encyclopedic histories of Jewish control of the American media outdo any efforts by so-called “anti-Semites” to document an astonishing, frightening fact: The majority of media news and information to the American public comes from Jews. An authoritative Jewish website Judaism Online (www.simpletoremember.com) in its article “Jewish Success in the American Media” documents Jewish media preeminence. It does so not from motives of anti-Semitism but from Jewish pride. Its 2002 list of many Jewish superstars in the media today is printed, in part, below. Of course, there are more Gentiles than Jews in the American media, as in America at large. But notice how many Jews are in control of media giants. This helps explain why the media is so relentlessly anti-Christian, constantly pushing immorality and the liberal Zionist political agenda. Why are Christians always marginalized in films and TV? Why is the Palestinian perspective not included in the news? Face the forbidden truth: The media speaks with a Jewish voice. TELEVISION NETWORKS CBS/Viacom: Sumner Redstone - chairman of board and CEO of the CBS Corporation, which includes Viacom, "world's biggest media giant" ( Economist, 11-23-02). The CBS Corporation is the world's most powerful and corruptive Jewish media giant. Viacom owns Viacom Cable, CBS, and MTV… Blockbuster Video Rentals, and Black Entertainment TV. Viacom operations include UPN, BET Networks, Paramount Pictures and such well-known global brands as VH1, CMP, Logo, Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, Nick Jr., Teen Nick, Comedy Central, Showtime, Spike TV, TV Land, Rock Band, Addicting Games, Atom, Neo Pets, and Shockwave as well as Simon and Schuster. Phillipe Dauman is president and CEO of Viacom. Leslie Moonves (great-nephew of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion) - president of CBS Television. Just Resigned Martin Franks (*) is executive vice president, planning, policy and government affairs. Louis J. Briskman (*) is executive vice president of research and planning and general counsel. Although Jews compose less than 2 percent of the US population, the CBS Corporation Board of Directors, as well as major corporation divisions, is occupied by over 60 percent Jews. NBC: In 2011 Comcast purchased NBC Universal. Steve Burke (a gentile yet board member of J. P. Morgan) became new CEO of NBC Universal. Robert Greenblatt is chairman of NBC Entertainment. Steve Capus (*) is president of NBC News. Max Mutchnik and David Kohan - co-executive producers of NBC’s “Good Morning, Miami.” ABC: Robert Iger - major owner of Walt Disney, Capital Cities, and ABC. Disney owns cable TV networks such as Disney Channel, ESPN, A&E TV Network, ABC Family, as well as many other entertainment venues. Allan Braverman is executive vice president and general counsel of Walt Disney Company. Ben Sherwood is president of ABC News. FOX: Rupert Murdoch (Jewish mother, hence legally Jewish) is owner of FOX TV, New York Post, London Times, and News of the World. Joel Klein, ex-chancellor of New York Department of Education, was appointed by Murdoch to clean up the news corporation's hacking image. CNN: Wolf Blitzer is host of CNN’s "The Situation Room." HOLLYWOOD MOVIE STUDIOS The prestigious Encyclopedia Judaica, in its article “Motion Pictures,” pg. 449, says: “Thus all the large Hollywood companies, with the exception of United Artists...were founded and controlled by Jews.” Sony Corporation (worldwide): Howard Stringer - chairman and group CEO. Sony produced the blasphemous "Da Vinci Code" (SeeThe Jews Behind Da Vinci Code) Columbia Pictures: Michael Lynton - cochairman. Sony Pictures Entertainment: Amy Pascal - cochairman. Warner Bros.: Barry Meyer - chair. Edgar M. Bronfman Jr. was CEO of Warner Music Group from 2004 until sale of WMG in 2011. He was previously CEO of Seagram and vice chairman of Vivendi Universal. Time Warner: Gary Ginsberg is executive vice president of marketing and communications. Paramount: Brad Gray - president of Paramount Pictures. DreamWorks: Stephen Spielberg, David Geffen, Jeffrey Katzenberg (owners). Miramax Films: Harvey Weinstein, former CEO of Miramax, left to found, with his brother, Weinstein Films. Warner Brothers: Barry Meyer - chairman. MGM: Harry Sloan - chairman. AMC: Charlie Collier - president. Screen Actors Guild: Alan Rosenberg - president. RADIO Clear Channel Communications: Robert Sillerman - founder. PBS: Ben Wattenberg - moderator, PBS ThinkTank. PUBLISHERS The Encyclopedia Judaica, in its article “Publishing,” lists the following publishing houses, as of 1971, owned or controlled by Jews: Viking, Knopf, Random House, Modern Library, Simon and Schuster, Harcourt, Brace & Co., Greenberg Publishers, Ziff-Davis, Crown Publishers, Dial Press and Dryden Press. Publishing houses either founded by or with a Jew as editor-in-chief include: Farrar, Straus, & Giroux, Abelard-Schumann, Basic Books, Grosset & Dunlap, Federal Writers Project, Gaer Associates, Macmillan & Co., Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Citadel Press, Chanticleer Press, Arthur Frommer, Inc., Hart Publishing Co., Lantern Press, Oceanea Publications, Twayne Publishers, Arco Publishing Co., Grossman Publishers, and Stein & Day. Publishing houses involved in book clubs, reprints, or children’s literature either founded by or controlled by Jews include the Literary Guild, Book of the Month Club, Limited Editions Club, Heritage Club, Junior Heritage Club, Readers Club, Jewish Book Guild, Military Science Book Club, Natural History Book Club, Book Collector’s Society, Art Book Guild, Science Book Club, Beech Hurst Press, A. Mark Golin - VP and creative director for AOL. Warren Lieberford - president of Warner Bros. Home Video Division of AOL-Time Warner. Judaism Online’s list presents only the most outstanding, well-recognized Jews in the American media. I could name hundreds more from the top ranks of Jewish media leadership. Such names are readily available from corporate directories such as Standard and Poor's and Lexis Nexus. Yes, some a small number of the Jewish superstars listed above are political conservatives. Yet studies of top-level Jewish media executives prove they are overwhelming liberal. The famous Lichter-Rothman poll in the early 1980s found that top media executives were radically out of step with the moral values of the American public. Of these, 97% affirm a woman's right to an abortion if she pleases. 80% disagree that homosexuality is wrong. 86% believe homosexuals have the right to be schoolteachers. 51% believe adultery is permissible. Of 104 top executives polled, 59% were "raised in the Jewish religion." Who can deny such Jewish domination of big media? As Jewish film critic Michael Medved argues, "It makes no sense at all to try to deny the reality of Jewish power and preeminence in popular culture. Any list of the most influential production executives at each of the major movie studios will produce a heavy majority of recognizable Jewish names." Does it matter who dominates the media? It does! The media shapes not only our children's values and actions but our own. The Jewish media has normalized sexual degeneracy, profanity and all kinds of sin. It also leads us into war to make the Mid-East safe for Israel. This happened in Afghanistan, Iraq and, tomorrow, Iran. If an anti-Christian agenda were being advanced by Moonies or Scientologists, dominating the most powerful positions of media leadership in America, there would be a howl of protest. Americans would demand Congressional hearings and investigations. But because the Jewish media has forbidden identification of itself as Jewish, vilifying such as anti-Semitism, a deafening silence prevails. Meanwhile, relentless evil continues to control the spigot of information from which America drinks.NPN Email Alert: Updated! Jews Confirm Big Media is Jewishtruthtellers.org

Dictatorship USA – A Personal History – Part 31
A pseudo-peace movement and then Harvard...
After a year-and-a-half or so in Boston, my CP “comrades” insisted that I leave the anti-HUAC organization and work full-time for peace. That part was all right. By then, HUAC, while still ugly, was largely a concern of the past and the Vietnam War was issue Number One. I was ready to move on.
The “Party” decision was that I should become an organizer for Mass PAX#, a dead end proposal. Like virtually all “movement” organizations## in the US, the FBI was in control. Nonetheless, PAX at times played a role in demonstrating anti-war sentiment in the state. However, any chance that I could become an organizer was derailed by red-baiting, pro-imperialist propagandist Marty Peretz###, who was on the PAX board.
After I was rejected, my “comrades” decided that I should set up what in effect was a rival organization called PACEM (Peace Action Council of Eastern Massachusetts). This in principle was wrong, as it was in effect “dual unionism” - creating a competing quasi-organization when unity was needed. I was uncomfortable about the idea but too inexperienced politically to downright refuse.
The PACEM fiasco lasted for about a year, when I realized that I had to go back into science to earn my keep. Lawrence Bogorad (see post 20 of this series) had moved from the University of Chicago to the Harvard Biological Laboratories, and I was somewhat surprised that he immediately agreed to my request to become a post-doctoral fellow in his laboratory.
“Lawrence Bogorad, a leading researcher in plant biology who was widely known for his work on the synthesis of chlorophyll and on inheritance patterns in a variety of plants... Dr. Bogorad, who retired from Harvard in 1991, served as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society of Plant Physiologists.” (The New York Times, Jan. 5, 2004)
An unwitting accomplice to chemical warfare...
Research went quite well. My main collaborator Richard Falk (now a Professor Emeritus at the Department of Plant Biology, University of California Davis) was also assigned by the FBI to keep tabs on me.
One day Bogorad called me into his office specifically to show me a scientific paper from Fort Detrick* (stamped “secret” or even “top secret”). “Fort Detrick... was the center of the U.S. biological weapons program from 1943 to 1969... it has hosted most elements of the United States biological defense program.” (Fort Detrick, Wikipedia)
Strange. Why show me secret US military material? Bogorad pointed to the reference section of the paper, which had to do with defoliation*. Among the paper's citations was a citation of my Ph.D. thesis research, which had been published: Solubilization and Properties of Chloroplast Lamellar Protein Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (US) 56, 1564-1570 (1966).
It should be noted that the US war against Vietnam was going on full force at the time, and defoliation was among the arsenal of horrible weapons the “Land of the Free” was employing against the people of that country.
At about the same time, Peter Hepler (see post 17), then an assistant professor at the same Harvard Biological Laboratories where I was working, informed me unofficially that I had been selected to assume his position as he was preparing to move to Stanford University in California. An assistant professorship at Harvard was considered a plum for young scientists. And I had not even applied!
Was it true? Probably so. I had just been promoted to Lecturer in Biology (see photograph No. 5 in my book “Silent Terror”), and in case I accepted the new presumed post, my time for political struggle would have been severely limited.
Both unexpected occurences should be seen as two parts of a treacherous whole. Bogorad's (actually the FBI's, of course) ploy was intended to demonstrate to still fairly naive Arnold Lockshin that there can be no escaping the talons of United States imperialism via “pure” research or by any other means. I had earlier thought that my scientific research was entirely humanistic and dispassionate, while in fact it was being used for the most foul of all human endeavors: mass murderous imperialist war. Hepler's “insider information” on my prospective appointment (whether true or not) indicated that abandoning one's ideal had its rewards.
////////////////////////////
At that time, I understood considerably less about the United States of Dictatorship America (USA) than I do now. But even so, I was quite shaken about the juxtaposition of the two events. I saw no conscionable future for myself in science.
When Gus Hall, General Secretary of the “Communist Party USA” next came into the Boston area, I told him I wanted to become a full-time organizer for the “Party.”
….................................
# “Academia has influenced the Massachusetts voter not only directly, but through the state's peace movement, perhaps the strongest, most effective such force anywhere in the United States. The membership of the state's peace groups has never been large: the most important, Massachusetts Political Action for Peace (known as “Mass Pax”), now has only 1,220.” (As Massachusetts went— The New York Times, Jan. 14, 1973)
## The one most notable exception was the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) when it was led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Even when King led the SCLC, the organization was heavily infiltrated and partially obstructed by FBI stooges such as Jesse Jackson.
### “Martin H. "Marty" Peretz (born December 6, 1938) is an American publisher. Formerly an assistant professor at Harvard University, he purchased The New Republic in 1974 and took editorial control soon afterwards. Peretz is known for his strong support of Israel and support for the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.” (Marty Peretz, Wikipedia)

The Neoliberal Era Is Over Donald Trump’s pro-tariff action yesterday underlines a reality long in the making: The post-Cold War neoliberal triumphalism is dead in the West. Matt Welch| Jan. 4, 2017 10:20 am
Yesterday brought three bits of trade-related news from President-elect Donald Trump. The first was that he has nominated as the next United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, who has long railed against what he calls "the utopian dreams of free traders." The second was, obviously, a tweet:
General Motors is sending Mexican made model of Chevy Cruze to U.S. car dealers-tax free across border. Make in U.S.A.or pay big border
And third was the announcement from Ford Motor Co. that it is cancelling a $1.6 billion plant in Mexico while launching a $700 million factory in Michigan, which Ford Chairman Bill Ford Jr. told Trump himself in a phone call.
We've already seen this cycle play out before—five weeks ago, over the span of a few days, the president-elect vowed to enact a 35 percent border tax, slammed an Indiana ball-bearings plant for moving its factory to Mexico, then declared victory after intervening in another manufacturer's siting decision. But coupled with recent political and societal developments in the increasingly morose continent of Europe, this latest bout of Trumpism spray-paints an exclamation point on a 2017 reality many are still slow to acknowledge: The post-Cold War age of ever-increasing trade, immigration, multilateral integration, and technocratic celebrations thereof, is in the rearview mirror. Once-dominant neoliberalism—I'm using the term here as it is deployed these days by its critics, rather than how it was used by its more domestically inclined originators—is on life support in the democratic West. And this deterioration long predates Donald Trump.
CNNStart with trade. After the destruction of World War II and the post-war European incursions by the Soviet Union, tariff reductions and free-trade zones have been understood in Paris, Bonn, London, and Washington as the best available tool to cement peace and stave off authoritarianism. American presidents from both major political parties—sporadic rhetorical spasms notwithstanding—have without exception assumed their role as the world's lead trade negotiator. Dwight Eisenhower, in the teeth of the Cold War, bucked nearly a century of Republican protectionism. Bill Clinton and Al Gore, after the collapse of communism, shouted down giant sucking sounds from all over the political spectrum. Even Barack Obama, who campaigned more vociferously against trade pacts than any postwar president, predictably reneged on his promise to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and appointed as his second-term Trade Representative a guy whose resume—Council on Foreign Relations, Citigroup, chief of staff in Robert Rubin's Treasury Department—couldn't be more neoliberal if it was cooked up in a laboratory.
Compare that to the mercantilist economic views of Trump's pick, as expressed in a 2008 New York Times op-ed headlined "Grand Old Protectionists":
Modern free traders […] embrace their ideal with a passion that makes Robespierre seem prudent. They allow no room for practicality, nuance or flexibility. They embrace unbridled free trade, even as it helps China become a superpower. They see only bright lines, even when it means bowing to the whims of anti-American bureaucrats at the World Trade Organization. They oppose any trade limitations, even if we must depend on foreign countries to feed ourselves or equip our military. They see nothing but dogma—no matter how many jobs are lost, how high the trade deficit rises or how low the dollar falls.
While the Trump administration's pivot on trade will feel abrupt, the politics behind it have been percolating for more than a decade. Free-trade Democrats, once a common sight on Capitol Hill, became all but extinct after the party re-took Congress in 2006 on a more economically populist platform. Hillary Clinton twice ran for president by campaigning against her husband's trade deals (even while bragging on his economic successes), yet in both instances found herself yanked sharply to the left by competitors who successfully questioned her sincerity. Bernie Sanders, a democratic socialist and longtime independent, received more than 13 million votes in the Democratic presidential primary, in part by claiming—ludicrously!—that international trade is a "global race to the bottom."
Meanwhile, Republicans haven't been as pro-trade as you might think. Two of the GOP's top four presidential finishers in both 2008 and 2012 campaigned against free-trade agreements—Ron Paul over issues of sovereignty and crony capitalism, Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum for reasons that would soon be echoed by Trump. The president-elect may be jerking public opinion toward his P.O.V., but even before Inauguration Day, 70 percent of conservatives support "imposing stiff tariffs or other taxes on U.S. companies that relocate jobs." Free trade right now just ain't popular.
The same is true in Europe, as pro-trade Euroskeptics such as Daniel Hannan are coming to find out in a post-Brexit universe. While Brits have surely reclaimed sovereignty by swapping Eurocrats for homegrown busybodies, it may take as long as a decade to negotiate a new trade deal just with the European Union, let alone stitch together scores of other new bilateral pacts. And there's no indication that voters who rejected Brussels will turn around and support reductions in tariffs with other foreign capitals. As Johan Norberg pointed out in these pages back in July, the pro-Brexit leadership sounded some downright Trumpian notes about state intervention into markets:
ITV.com[L]eading free-market Tories Boris Johnson and Michael Gove drove around in a campaign bus emblazoned with the message that government health care will get another £350 million a week outside of the E.U. The Leave campaign also promised more tax money to universities, scientists, and distressed regions.
When a steel plant in Wales foundered, Boris Johnson abandoned all free-market pretense and explained that the problem is that the E.U. stops the British government from introducing tariffs: "When we want to change tack on tariffs, we can't—because we have given up control." Gove complained that the E.U. has "rules that prevent us providing that emergency support and assistance" and that after Brexit "we would be able to support industries that were going through difficult times."
Railing against the sovereignty-busting whims of overseas elites isn't just effective politics, it's also often right. The E.U. project has been liberating when it comes to free trade, privatization, and the movement of humans within its borders, but planners weren't content to stop there. They insisted on eradicating monetary sovereignty as well, implausibly lashing together the central banks of Germany and Greece, a system that leaves all participants perpetually (and rightfully) disgruntled. And the downside to pooling and outsourcing immigration policy has been all too clear these past few years, as locals have found some of their cities swollen with hard-to-assimilate migrants and refugees from war-torn Muslim regions of the Middle East and North Africa, without feeling like they had any say in the matter. Throw in what has become almost monthly acts of deadly Islamic terrorism on the continent, and the nationalist political reactions write themselves.
Press AssociationThere is zero juice left in the West for Bill Clinton or Tony Blair-style Third Way politics, nor much for the managerial conservatism of Jacques Chirac and George W. Bush. And yes, the military interventionism that each in their way championed contributed to the discrediting of their ideological brands. As former New Republic owner and editor Marty Peretz reminisced in the Wall Street Journal a few years back, "We were for the Contras in Nicaragua; wary of affirmative action….For military intervention in Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur; alarmed about the decline of the family. The New Republic was also an early proponent of gay rights. We were neoliberals."
In the post-neoliberal era, parties of the left are going hard democrat-socialist (think Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn), while parties of the right increasingly adopt the welfare-state nationalism of Donald Trump, Viktor Orban, and France's ever-advancing Le Pen family. The areas around the center are as dead as the political careers of, well, Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush. Voters everywhere are drifting toward candidates and parties whose incorrectness (as perceived by elites) in manner, policy ideas, and rhetoric offer hope that they, at long last, won't be like all the others. I was struck during a Christmas visit to France at how genuinely intrigued people I spoke to were about Donald Trump, often in a hopeful way. I almost never heard such generous assessments of the likes of George W. Bush.
The potential magnitude of this Transatlantic political realignment is one of the reasons Team Trump has such a spring in its step. For those who are more anxious about the rise in mercantilism and decline of multilateralism, it will do no real good to merely point at the highlight reel of the recent past. That place was more flawed and corrupted than its managers were willing to admit, and in any event is no longer the reality we live in.
