Summary:

The Golden Rat Demon led a group of demons to occupy the bottomless cave of Xiankong Mountain, and planned to capture Tang Monk, marry him first and then eat his flesh, in order to achieve immortality and become an immortal. The Golden Rat Demon seduced Tang Monk in every possible way, and then went to the hall to force him to marry. But Tang Monk was only thinking about the scriptures, and his Zen heart was not moved. The Golden Rat Demon finally became angry and wanted to cook and eat Tang Monk. When Sun Wukong came back from begging for food, he learned that his master was taken away by the demon again. He was very anxious and beat the mountain god with a stick. Only then did he know that his master was taken away by the Golden Rat Demon, the owner of the bottomless cave of Xiankong Mountain thousands of miles away.

He immediately led his junior brothers Bajie and Sha Seng to explore the cave. During the process of Wukong and Bajie looking for their master, Bajie was confused by the demon fire and was captured by the demon, and Wukong was almost destroyed by the thousand-jin gate. It turned out that the Golden Rat Demon had a red fire pill with boundless magic power, which made it difficult for Wukong and Bajie to deal with. Wukong had no choice but to ask for help from Guanyin of the South China Sea and got a treasure bottle. The Golden Rat Demon relied on the Red Fire Pill to defeat Wukong again. Wukong was enraged and started killing again. He waved the golden hoop and swept through the monsters. Sha Seng and Bajie took the opportunity to save Tang Sanzang. The Golden Rat Demon knew that it was difficult to win with swords and weapons, so he once again offered the Red Fire Pill. In an instant, the whole cave was on fire and smoke was everywhere. When Bajie saw the fire, he pulled Sha Seng and ran away. Wukong offered the Guanyin treasure bottle in the fire, and the treasure bottle poured down from the air to release the huge waves of the East China Sea, which immediately extinguished the demon fire and drowned the monsters.

The Golden Rat Demon threw out two embroidered shoes and turned into his own image. The three golden rat monsters fought against Wukong, Bajie and Sha Seng, but were eventually suppressed by weapons. The golden rat monsters knelt down and begged for mercy, but Wukong swung his stick and beat them down. Guanyin came and asked Wukong to show mercy and hand over the golden rat monsters to her to be taken back to heaven for punishment. Wukong obeyed. Guanyin took the boy and the dragon girl to capture the golden rat monsters and returned to the South China Sea. Tang Monk and his three disciples once again embarked on the long journey to the West to obtain scriptures.

JTTW Chapter 21 Thoughts

Chapter 21 for the @journeythroughjourneytothewest Reading Group!

Oooh, Sumeru! With one of the most recent references to it being Genshin Impact of course.

I believe the Yellow Wind King really liked his Tiger Vanguard. If just as a friend or something else is up for interpretation.

Also it is true that they didn’t exactly do much other than capture Tang Sanzang, and perhaps do a little bit of fighting, but they haven’t actually hurt anyone yet. Maybe this whole conflict could have just been resolved with some talking instead.

The ‘horse’ can guard itself thank you very much!

Now is Bailong Ma acting as a seeing-eye horse for Sun Wukong here? Perhaps.

If something has Samadhi attached to its name, it tends to always mean trouble for our pilgrims.

That first paragraph of this poem truly describes mosquitoes to a T!

Poor Tang Sanzang must be so dehydrated by now. Do those guys even take care of him or are they just leaving him tied up there? One ought to think they at least give him some basic care since they want to keep him alive until they actually eat him.

Those deities just love to leave little notes around. Reminds me a bit of parents leaving little notes of encouragement or reminders for their children.

Three Kingdoms strikes again with the references!

I love that the Yellow Wind King is just a little fluffball. He must look so adorable in his original form! He might specifically be a Mustela Sibirica also known as Siberian Weasel or Kolonok which are native to Asia. Funfact in German they are also called Fireweasel! These little guys certainly look the ‘yellow’ part of the Yellow Wind King!

Though it could also be a Martes Zibellina, a subspecies of Marten whose habitat borders on Eastern China and which has a yellow winter coat. The J. F. Jenner and German translation went with marten as well.

Either way, an adorable little critter! So have another picture!

Though killing all those other creatures is going a bit overboard in my opinion. The listing of the animals is accurate to the Original Chinese by the way, I checked that over.

I'm often so envious of a lot of different theriotypes.

Wolves (smart social teamworkers), foxes (cat software running on dog hardware, best from both worlds), cats (wild and domestic, independent and curious), dogs (cheerful supportive friends), deer (a majestic forest prince/ss), tiger (powerful and confident beast) and many more. Y'all so cool.

What am I? A little marten - shyly hiding in tree holes, afraid of any suspicious sound (what if it's larger predators?) Generally not so known species, and mustelids are already demonized as "scary bloodthirsty maniacs"... A stoat is even tinier, and even more fit with this bloodthirsty myth only for being hungry because of quick metabolism...

And orthohumans even say they are PESTS. Trapping martens so they won't eat chickens, the stoat problem in New Zealand (they weren't supposed even to be there!! it was a whim of some naive people)... I randomly see dead martens and stoats photos online, it's awful as hell!!! When I'm looking for the photos of them ALIVE, it's 20% chance that I'll see a dead marten/stoat picture!!! I'm just a stupid pest to them...

What to be proud of?.. I'm an anxious ball of fur either scavenging for fruit or chasing mice.

I'd rather be something magnificent, but no, I'm this. These are my instincts, these is my subconcious "supposed" body/mind/lifestyle, life of a marten or a stoat.

I do have cool feline hearttypes, but they are only connections and I'm simply relating to them. Not even a wolverine, otter or a badger, who I see as much "mightier", "cooler", more "serious" mustelids.

sad marten vent. sorry. i already am shy and anxious with a low self-esteem, and with awakening and later understanding of being a pest animal it worsens a bit.

DAY 58 — 31/10/2024

The day in Valigma begins with a spooky look in preparation for Halloween!

Pac starts cleaning up his house for Fit (and Badboyhalo)'s visit. He is very anxious.

All the specialists and ghosts dressed up for the occasion, with unique or nostalgic costumes (Choke even dressed up as Huggy Wuggy in real life).

Bagi — Detective/"Oppenheimer";

Malena — Shrek in a bikini;

The costume parade begins, with bombastic performances (some of them literally). After the parade, the rules of the event were handed out in books.

All specialists are taken to a large village, and there, a huge castle can be seen filled with countless monsters. They manage to enter the castle and inside a black dog resembling AuAu appears, informing everyone about his master and the castle owner, Mr. X (Badboyhalo), who was waiting for them.

Unfortunately, Mr. X deceives them and they all fall into the trap he prepared. It is revealed by him that there was someone — a bald man — that they needed to save if they wanted to leave the place alive.

DAY 59 — 01/11/2024

All the specialists wake up in the basement they fell into because of Mr. X's trap. In the immense place, they find the bald man who was kidnapped by him, called Fit.

After a fun encounter with the then rescued prisoner, all the specialists have to solve puzzles to get out of the place alive. The ghost children, instead of helping the large group, were supposedly bewitched to help Mr. X distract everyone from completing the puzzles (My theory is that they just wanted to play and annoy their parents and uncles).

The first puzzle was easily solved despite the large number of monsters attacking everyone. The second puzzle was so complicated that even Denix helped with tips (Bala Likah showed up on the place to play with the specialists while everything was going on). The third was much easier, leading to doors for each of the participants, behind the doors a warp plate was inside the compartment. The warp plate took the specialists to an immense three-story maze, where everyone was in different places.

When everyone managed to find the exit (a warpstone), everyone was teleported to a huge Halloween cemetery, where Mr. X appeared again to explain that everything is not over yet, the last challenge being an immense battle against countless monsters commanded by him.

After the fierce battle, everyone (including the ghosts and Mr. X/Badboyhalo) was teleported to the lake pier of Valigma's City.

Now everyone could talk properly with the two foreign visitors.

Pac and Fit soon became close again and Pac gave Fit a tour of his house (HIDEDUO AHH).

Meanwhile, some specialists dispersed to talk to the ghosts or Badboyhalo. Gabepeixe and Bagi soon show the new visitor their atomic bombs (They end up killing Badboyhalo and some players nearby, in addition to making a crater near the city hall).

After the house tour, Pac and Fit meet up with the rest of the specialists. Mayor Jota appears and asks everyone who created a crater near the city hall (he says he passed by the place and fell into the large and sudden crater), Fit takes the blame for the crater and Jota readily forgives him, giving him a hug before leaving.

Badboyhalo is taken on a tour of the city by Coreano and some other specialists, taking him to their homes (Badboyhalo takes advantage of his hobby of stealing other people's furniture).

Then Fit is taken by Pac and some specialists for a tour of the city, going to the Entertainment District for a drink (being served by JVNQ in his maid costume).

Suddenly, Samir appears to chat in a relaxed way, laughing and telling some of Pac's embarrassing secrets to Fit and everyone there.

Soon Badboyhalo appears with some specialists, and everyone starts talking. Beatriz then has the idea of ​​taking them to her house so everyone can celebrate and get to know the place.

The party is interrupted when Badboyhalo is teleported by Araldo to his office. He tells the demon that he loved watching the tricks and traps he did against the specialists. They talk a little before saying goodbye and Araldo sending him back to Beatriz's house.

Now, when it's Fit's turn, he is teleported by Bia Raux who thanks him for his efforts in protecting the specialists. They talk for a bit before Fit is sent back.

After a big bug in the voice chat and Nicklink killing others with his power for fun, everyone gathers in the secret basement of Beatriz's house to dance to Brazilian songs.

Fit says goodbye to Pac and everyone, ending up dying from another Nicklink power along with other people after saying goodbye.

Badboyhalo is taken on another tour, this time to Choke's house with Moonkase, Gabepeixe, Denix, Amora and Malena. Choke shows him the place and, after they kill the frogs (first accidentally and then on purpose) in her house, Gabepeixe, Denix and Amora take Badboyhalo to the half-fish laboratory.

There they show Badboyhalo a rocket prepared especially for him and the three take the demon for a tour of the moon. They loot a dungeon, try to summon the Wither and Badboyhalo puts a flag on the moon.

Returning to Valigma, Gabepeixe shows the leaderboard, the cinema and tells more about what he went through with the other specialists. In the end, Gabepeixe takes Badboyhalo to his dinosaur cave and, After Badboyhalo meets Raccoon again, he says goodbye while everyone dances with the dinosaurs (As a souvenir, Badboyhalo asks Denix to kill him [one more time] and the group makes a tomb for the demon).

I wonder about Jason’s reaction with the good ghost dog, Cujo?

I love these questions so much, they make me think and flesh out this AU.

So. Jason met Cujo in probably one of the least ideal ways humanly(ghostly?) possible.

Cujo had wandered into the castle, as he does because he is a free spirit. He had followed the exciting new scent and found Jason's room. He then proceeded to chew on and eat all of Jason's shoes.

You'd think this would be while he was in puppy form. Nope. He was in his huge Hulk-Rottweiler-Hellhound form. So. He's just there, happily munching on Jason's shoes, remains of other pairs scattered about him like rubbery, leather confetti when Jason walks in. Sees this absolute UNIT of a monster dog wagging his tail and scarfing down the Doc Martens Sam has bought him last week.

Jason was sorta settled into the GZ at this point and just sighed, turned around and yelled out. "Danny your damn mutt is eating all my shoes!"

And Danny, who knew Jason hadn't met Cujo yet was like "How'd you know he's my dog?! You can't blame everything on me!"

And Jason stares him dead in the eyes, steps to the side so Cujo can see Danny and Danny just gets absolutely bodied by the goodest boy.

"You get to tell Sam your dog ate my shoes, fucker."

Jason wasn't that upset. He's not overly attached to things like clothes. They tend to get damaged often during spars and fights and workshop accidents anyways. Sam was far more upset. ("Those were limited edition Danny!")

Jason does love Cujo. He's very much a dog person. He doesn't really like cats. He swears they're all actually demons(and he's met demons. He uses this as proof). But cats adore Jason so much. He's a portable heater, so they climb all over him if given a chance. But he prefers dogs, and so he adores Cujo. Sometimes, he'll even take Cujo for walkies to the Underworld to play with his best friend Cerberus, and Jason will trade baking recipes with Persephone. Cujo likes Jason too, as he'll play fight with him, and he's harder to accidentally yeet like Danny.

Danny gets really flustered and tongue tied anytime he sees Jason and Cujo playing. A picture of Jason asleep on a couch with puppy Cujo laying on his chest is his current lockscreen.

At around 5pm, you finally got home after an exhausting day at work. You, of course, loved your job; it was your dream job, after all! Some days were more tiring than others.

You took your shoes off & put them near the door next to Wilbur's scuffed, untied Dr. Martens that had lost their shine years ago, unlike your darling boyfriend, who always seemed to have some sort of lively spark about him that nobody could quite have for themselves, which is rather peculiar, since he writes incredibly heart-wrenching songs nowadays. The shoes were massive compared to yours, almost like a clown's.

In the office, you heard shouting & laughter. You didn't think your boyfriend would be streaming, since he hadn't streamed since October, & he never mentioned any upcoming streams. Maybe he was treating the livestream like he treated Mammalian Sighing Reflex & did it unannounced to surprise people. Not wanting to interrupt him, you walked into the bedroom to take off your work clothes & change into sweatpants & Wilbur's brown hoodie that still had the smell of earthy, soothing cologne & petrichor lingering on the soft fabric. You checked yourself in the mirror. You looked okay, except for the fact that your eyes were drooping & you looked almost like you were going to collapse & fall asleep on the floor if you did any excessive movements. You yawned & stretched your arms above your head, hearing a few cracks & pops as you did such from not cracking anything all day. You then cracked your neck & knuckles, & both of them made loud pop & crack & crunch sounds. You finger-combed through your hair, tugging through the knots while wincing. You looked very dead. Abandoning the rule you made for yourself not to bother Wilbur during streams, you slowly opened the office door just a crack, making sure not to make any loud creaks.

"So, I think that'll be all today, chat!" Wilbur smiled. "Thank you all for coming. I'm so sorry I haven't been streaming as much, I've just got Lovejoy things to do. We're all very busy all the time. Here, let's have you all raid...Philza. Go raid him. Bye, chat!" He clicked the "Stop streaming" button on his PC & sighed. Since his spinny chair was still facing the PC setup, you were able to come around & hug him from behind.

"Hello," you mumbled sleepily. "I'm back."

"Angel! You're back!" Wilbur sprang up from his seat & picked you up & spun you around, causing you to laugh. When he stopped, he sat down on the chair with you in his lap. "How was work, love? Everything go okay at work?"

You shrugged. "It wasn't bad, per se, but it was just exasperating. Nobody was rude or crass to me, but I'm just really tired." Wilbur made a small "ah" sound & nodded.

"Do you want to go cuddle in bed & drink some tea?" Wilbur asked, playing with your fingers. "Do you want to do that? Or we could do something else."

"Tea & cuddles sound nice," you said. Wilbur nodded & picked you up & walked you to the kitchen. He still kept you in his arms while he made tea, softly asking you which tea flavor you preferred & which mug you wanted, or if you even wanted a mug or if you just wanted a glass. You two waited in the kitchen while the tea was being prepared, with Wilbur rocking you back & forth to a symphony only he could hear. When the whistling of the tea kettle echoed through the kitchen, he poured the two mugs of tea & handed you one as he grabbed the other & walked back to the bedroom. He cautiously placed you on the bed to make sure neither of you spilled the tea onto the soft white sheets. When he sat down on the bed, you immediately scooted over to him & cuddled up to him with his arm over your shoulders & your head buried in the crook of his neck. & you two just stayed like that for an uncountable amount of time.

Thank goodness you came back.

do you have any sources on the worship of the goddess inanna/Ishtar during the Seleucid/Hellenistic period to the Parthian period? i dont recall stumbling upon anything talking about her.

even though from what I've been reading mesopotamian deities were still popular (like bel-marduk in Palmyra and nabu in Edessa or shamash in hatra and mardin or sin in harran etc etc.. ) i dont recall reading anything about her or anything mention her worship (other than theories of the alabaster reclining figurines being depictions of her)

A good start when it comes to late developments in Mesopotamian religion is Religious Continuity and Change in Parthian Mesopotamia. A Note on the survival of Babylonian Traditions by Lucinda Dirven.

Hellenistic Uruk, and by extension the cult of Ishtar, is incredibly well documented and the most extensive monograph on this topic, Julia Krul’s The Revival of the Anu Cult and the Nocturnal Fire Ceremony at Late Babylonian Uruk, is pretty much open access (and I link it regularly here, and it's one of my to-go wiki editing points of reference as well); it has an extensive bibliography and the author discusses the history of research of the development of specific cults in Uruk in detail. The gist of it is fairly straightforward: her status declined because with the fall of Babylon to the Persians the priestly elites of Uruk decided it’s time for a reform and for the first time in history Anu’s primacy moved past the nominal level, into the cultic sphere, at the expense of Ishtar and Nanaya. Even the Eanna declined, though a new temple, the Irigal, was built essentially as a replacement; we know relatively a lot about its day to day operations. An akitu festival of Ishtar is also well documented, and Krul goes into its details. All around, I don’t think the linked book will disappoint you.

An important earlier work about the changes in Uruk in Paul-Alain Beaulieu’s Antiquarian Theology in Seleucid Uruk. There’s also Of Priests and Kings: The Babylonian New Year Festival in the Last Age of Cuneiform Culture by Céline Debourse which covers Uruk and Babylon, but there is less material relevant to this ask there. Evidence from Upper Mesopotamia and beyond is more fragmented so I’ll discuss it in more detail under the cut. My criticism of this take on the reclining figures is there as well.

The matter is briefly discussed in Personal Names in the Aramaic Inscriptions of Hatra by Enrico Marcato (p. 168; search for “Iššar” within the file for theophoric name attestations). References to a deity named ʻIššarbēl might indicate Ishtar of Arbela fared relatively well (for her earlier history see here and here) in the first centuries CE. The evidence is not unambiguous, though. This issue is discussed in detail in Lutz Greisiger’s Šarbēl: Göttin, Priester, Märtyrer – einige Probleme der spätantiken Religionsgeschichte Nordmesopotamiens. Theophoric names and the dubious case of ʻIššarbēl aside, there are basically no meaningful attestations of Ishtar from Hatra, but curiously “Ishtar of Hatra” does appear in a Mandaic scroll known as the “Great Mandaic Demon Roll”. According to Marcato this evidence should not be taken out of context, and additionally it cannot be ruled that we’re dealing with a case of ishtar as a generic noun for a goddess (An Aramaic Incantation Bowl and the Fall of Hatra, pages 139-140; accessible via De Gruyter). If this is correct, most likely Marten (the enigmatic main female deity of the local pantheon), Nanaya or Allat (brought to Upper Mesopotamia by Arabs settling there in the first centuries CE) are actually meant as opposed to Ishtar. 

Joan Goodnick Westenholz suggested that Mandaic sources might also contain references to Ishtar of Babylon: the theonym Bablīta (“the Babylonian”) attested in them according to her might reflect the emergence of a new deity derived from Bēlet-Bābili (ie. Ishtar of Babylon) in late antiquity (Goddesses in Context, p. 133)

In addition to Marcato’s article listed above, another good starting point for looking into Mesopotamian religious “fossils” in Mandaic sources is Spätbabylonische Gottheiten in spätantiken mandäischen Texten by Christa Müller-Kessler and Karlheinz Kessler; Ishtar is covered on pages 72-73 and 83-84 though i’d recommend reading the full article for context. The topic is further explored here.

In his old-ish monograph The Pantheon of Palmyra, Javier Teixidor proposed that the sparsely attested local Palmyrene goddess Herta (I’ve also seen her name romanized as Ḥirta; it’s agreed that it’s derived from Akkadian ḫīrtu, “wife”) was a form of Ishtar, based on the fact she appears in multiple inscriptions alongside Nanaya (p. 111). She is best known from a dedication formula where she forms a triad with Nanaya and Resheph (Greek version replaces them with Hera and Artemis, but curiously keeps Resheph as himself). However, ultimately little can be said about her cult beyond the fact it existed, since a priest in her service is mentioned at least once.

I need to stress here that I didn’t find any other authors arguing in favor of the existence of a supposed Palmyrene Ishtar. Joan Goodnick Westenholz mentioned Herta in her seminal Nanaya: Lady of Mystery, but she only concluded that the name was an Akkadian loanword and that she, Resheph and Nanaya indeed formed a triad (p. 79; published in Sumerian Gods and their Representations, which as far as I know can only be accessed through certain totally legit means). Maciej M. Münnich in his monograph The God Resheph in the Ancient Near East doesn’t seem to be convinced by Teixidor’s arguments, and notes that it’s most sensible to assume Herta seems to be Nanaya’s mother in local tradition. He similarly criticizes Teixidor for asserting Resheph has to be identical with Nergal in Palmyrene context (pages 259-260); I’m inclined to agree with his reasoning, interchangeability of deities cannot be presumed without strong evidence and that is lacking here.

I’m not aware of any attestations from Dura Europos. Nanaya had that market cornered on her own. Last but not least: I'm pretty sure the number of authors identifying the statuettes you’ve mentioned this way is in the low single digits. The similar standing one from the Louvre is conventionally identified as Nanaya (see ex. Westenholz's Trading the Symbols of the Goddess Nanaya), who has a much stronger claim to crescent as an attribute (compare later Kushan and Sogdian depictions, plus note the official Seleucid interpretatio as Artemis for dynastic politics purposes), so I see little reason to doubt reclining figures so similar they even tend to have the same sort of gem navel decoration are also her, personally.

To sum everything up: while evidence is available from both the south and the north, the last centuries BCE and first centuries CE were generally a time of decline for Ishtar(s); for the first time Nanaya was a clear winner instead, but that's another story...
