Tis the Season to get “Spirited”
Get into the holiday spirit with "Spirited"!
We often wonder is people can change or are they set in their ways? Can a bad person become good? What is it all for? Why are we here? Why did the author fall down a hole of existential questions that are making me question my life? Well reader, let me tell you why I am reflecting on life’s questions. Anyone that knows me and knows me well can tell you that I am a Grinch, but before his heart…

Slumberland - Movie Review
Slumberland – Movie Review
TL;DR – A film that might have some of the most out-there performances I have seen but was missing a bit of substance in places.     ⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3 out of 5. Post-Credit Scene – There is no post-credit sceneDisclosure – I paid for the Netflix service that viewed this film Slumberland Review – Grief is always a complex emotion for a film to land. Well I can't stop thinking about if Apple's Spirited was actually done on Broadway with Broadway actors so have a fancast
Disclaimer: This is literally just actors I like and know are currently active. There is very little thought put into this beside "ooo I love this voice and think it would fit the role p well." Feel free to dispute and brainstorm further in the reblogs/tags, but like there is genuinely 4% thought put into this, lmao.
Present (Will Farrell) - Jonathan Groff
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The heart and soul of the show. Requires strong acting, strong vocals, and a stunning sense of humor. Honestly maybe this is just me being a simp but like I fully think he would have a gotdamn blast dressed up in Scrooge makeup for the 1800s scene and no one can convince me otherwise.
Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds) - Jeremy Jordan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is it, the entire reason I made this fan cast. Just. Imagine Jeremy Jordan singing Bringin' Back Christmas. The same energy as Ready As I'll Ever Be, and also as The World Will Know from Newsies??? Like, that's barely anything, and he's perfect.
Kimberly (Octavia Spencer) - Khaila Anyé Wilcoxon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah okay I did sadly feel like I needed to slightly de-age Kimberly to match the younger form of Present; my original casting was NaTasha Yvette Williams and she would still slay this so hard, but like. Consistency, ya know? And besides, Khaila is STUNNING, fr; her performance as Catherine of Aragon is a testament to her skills alone, but if you want proof of her ability to sing gently as well as to Belt Like All Hell as she does in Six, then I will just direct you kindly to her role as one of the Fates in Hadestown; girl SLAYS! (Alternate pick: Renée Elise Goldsberry, because I can just HEAR her sing these songs.)
Jacob Marley (Patrick Page) - Patrick Page
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean. Come on. Even if he hadn't played this role already, he originated Hades in Hadestown. No one can top this guy.
Past (Sunita Mani) - Solea Pfeiffer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hadestown haunts the cast again, but like, come on. She's so good, no one can tell me no.
Yet-to-Come (Tracy Morgan) - Michael James Scott
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IDK something about his energy as Genie just translates really well to this role to me. (Alternatively, the Beetlejuice energy of Alex Brightman would give a REALLY fun twist to it, especially if the director decided to lean into YTC as a comic relief character, but the energy is just off enough I wanna stick to the source material for now.)
Wren (Marlow Barkley) - Isabella Esler
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay to be completely honest am I pretty much just pulling a random Lydia Deets out of a hat since they're like the only consistent kid actresses I can find? Maybe, lmao. That said, having heard her sing, she's GOOD fam! I think she could pull Wren really well!
Owen (Joe Tippett) - Justin Collette
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, so once again, he happens to be a Beetlejuice star, but the vibe check here really comes from his role in School of Rock! It's the same sort of offbeat-person-with-a-heart-of-gold vibe as Owen has in the movie, and like with him also playing the Beetlejuice to Isabella's Lydia, I think they'd do great as dad and daughter on stage. Alternatively, Will Burton (who played Adam in the same cast) would also be a great pick, but gives off some more panicky vibes that I don't feel are as great of a match to Owen.
Carrie (Andrea Anders) - Michaela Diamond
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you've seen her video on her favorite song from NYT, you Know the vibes.
Anyway that's my brainrot for the year thank you and enjoy—

A Witch of No Importance Main Characters
Aquila Black The main protagonist of AWONI, Aquila is the twin of Sirius. Her story begins after the fallout of his disownment, and the consequences she faces for not joining him. Having an innate talent for spell-casting, Aquila is Orion's favorite child, which often brings her into conflict with her mother, Walburga, who would prefer to see Regulus in that coveted position. She considers herself "neutral" when it comes to the brewing conflict, but after Dumbledore recruits her in his investigation, she comes to realize she's always been on a side, and it hasn't been the right one.
Lauretta Buckling Friend of Aquila, Lauretta is the definitive Ravenclaw. Her nose in a book more often than not, Lauretta is top of her class in everything (save for that rubbish Divination). She has read through books far beyond the skillset of students in their year, and owns copies in several languages. While she appears apathetic with an air of superiority, she cares deeply for her friends, and won't hesitate to put someone in their place should they cross a line. After Hogwarts, she would become a world-renowned Curse-Breaker.
Marlow Barkley Three years younger than Aquila, Marlow is a third-year Hufflepuff with a penchant for starting chaos wherever she goes. She is also the official Hogwarts Quidditch commentator, known for her flair and occasional bias. After graduating, she would join the Order of the Phoenix before moving on to The Daily Prophet. She struggles with the aftermath of the war, and the blame she places on Dumbledore for everything falling apart in her life. She is the story's "interlude" character, helping transition between parts, before her subplot intersects with the main story.
Hattie Yates Another friend of Aquila's and a fellow Slytherin, Hattie only ever has one thing on her mind: Quidditch. An infamous Beater for the Slytherin team, there hasn't been a match that ended without at least one unconscious opponent since her third year. This has given her a bit of a god-complex on the pitch, but the student body has embraced it. Outside matches, Hattie is a ball of energy with no filter and not a care in the world. After Hogwarts, she would join the Falmouth Falcons, where her talents continued to garner attention.
Owen Ossett Head Boy during Aquila's sixth year, Owen is a serious and determined Ravenclaw. If it involves fun, expect Owen to not be present, or so his fellow students say. Coming from a long line of Aurors, Owen was expected to join their ranks. He, too, would join the Order, and suffer from violent episodes long after the war's end. When Aquila successfully frees Sirius from Azkaban, Owen leads the hunt to bring him back, bringing him to the point of obsession.
William Alabaster Ignatius Fiddlewood A Muggle-born several years older than the others, William is an Auror. At least, on paper he is. Due to what many consider to be a "lowborn" status, William has been denied promotion or any sort of activity in the field, despite the fact he excels in anything he gets his hands on. Quiet and unassuming, the Ministry suspects nothing of him even when he's helping Aquila behind their backs.
Sirius Black When they were ten, Sirius and Aquila made a pact to leave home together. When that day finally came during the summer before sixth year, Sirius thought Aquila would honor it. Instead, his sister chose their family, and he can't bring himself to forgive her for it, or even hear her out. What would follow were years of assuming the worst of his sister, which comes to a head during the war when he sees her working for the other side. He never would expect her to rescue him, or to see how wrong he had been the entire time...
Remus Lupin After Sirius left home, a letter from Remus made it to Aquila's possession. What followed was a summer's worth of correspondence, with Remus being the understanding listener that Aquila had needed from her brother. When Remus and Aquila return to Hogwarts, they come to realize those letters meant more to one another than they had imagined, and the ill-fated love affair that would follow would shake the foundations of the Wizarding World.

Don’t know if you’ve heard of Slumberland on Netflix, but it has pretty good family content. Namely uncle and niece.
https://youtu.be/FBnkVJslRGo
https://youtu.be/D7WhLZj5-LY
Anon #2: The main character in Slumberland, Nemo, she is only 11 but I think it has just some good family relationships.
OK, this is crazy. Slumberland was released on November 18th, and not only did I receive two asks about in the past few days, but I watched it this past week before I received them.
When I was watching it, I was like, "How come no one sent in a message about this?" But I guess we're all just late to the party! And we all got here at exactly the same time.
I totally agree that this is an AWESOME movie for uncle/niece. In fact, I had already added it to my fledgling non-canon uncle/niece rec list.
Thanks for sharing those trailers, Anon! For anyone unfamiliar with the movie, it's on Netflix and here's the description:
Slumberland takes audiences to a magical new place, a dreamworld where precocious Nemo (Marlow Barkley) and her eccentric companion Flip (Jason Momoa) embark on the adventure of a lifetime. After her father Peter (Kyle Chandler) is unexpectedly lost at sea, young Nemo's idyllic Pacific Northwest existence is completely upended when she is sent to live in the city with her well-meaning but deeply awkward uncle Phillip (Chris O'Dowd). Her new school and new routine are challenging by day but at night, a secret map to the fantastical world of Slumberland connects Nemo to Flip, a rough-around-the-edges but lovable outlaw who quickly becomes her partner and guide. She and Flip soon find themselves on an incredible journey traversing dreams and fleeing nightmares, where Nemo begins to hope that she will be reunited with her father once again.
It's very uncle/niece centric, and the relationship is really rich and dynamic.
Her relationship with her father is probably worth mentioning, though him dying really puts a knife through that sail. If she had been a lot older when he died, there would have been a lot to say about those two. I also really loved the relationship between the brothers, and it's almost a little suggestive, in the sense that Phillip asked Peter not to get married, and shut himself off from the world after that happened.
Thanks for the recs, Anons!

Slumberland
[3 stars]
Slumberland should have been so much more than it ended up being. It just never quite comes together the way it needed to, despite some absolutely wonderful ideas and visuals.
Collaborative Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb writers, David Guion and Michael Handelman, came up with a wild and fun concept that even has a little bit of an edge. But it was all a little too easy and without the depth it might have had. And director Francis Lawrence (Red Sparrow) didn’t find the right tone, allowing his main characters to sleepwalk and joke their way through most of the tough moments.
The result is that the capable leads, Marlow Barkley (Spirited, Single Parents), Jason Momoa (Dune), Weruche Opia, and Chris O’Dowd (The Starling) all feel a bit hollow. Honestly, when the stuffed pig comes across as the most believable character, you know something was lacking from the rest of the performances.
But the movie entertains and is, within its limits, delightful and fun. And, thanks to the skating over the toughest bits of the story, pretty much safe for all ages, though less engaging as you get out of teen years (in fact or in heart). But I’d still recommend it for the visual ride of a kid’s Matrix and the plot that turns out more clever than you think it will.
