More than 10,000 supernovae counted in stellar census

Since 2018 the Zwicky Transient Facility, an international astronomical collaboration based at the Palomar Observatory in California, has scanned the entire sky every two to three nights. As part of this mission, the ZTF's Bright Transient Survey has been counting and cataloging supernovae—flashes of light in the sky that are the telltale signs of stars dying in spectacular explosions.

On Dec. 4, ZTF researchers—including astronomers at the University of Washington—announced that they have identified more than 10,000 of these stellar events, the largest number ever identified by an astronomical survey.

"There are trillions of stars in the universe, and about every second, one of them explodes," said Christoffer Fremling, an astronomer at Caltech who leads the Bright Transient Survey. "ZTF detects hundreds of these explosions per night and a handful are then confirmed as supernovae. Systematically doing this for seven years has led to the most complete record of confirmed supernovae to date."

The Bright Transient Survey is currently the primary discovery pipeline for cosmic flashes—also known as astronomical transients—in the world. To determine which transients are supernovae, ZTF shares a stream of nightly transient detections with the wider astronomical community so that other telescopes around the world can conduct follow-up observations of candidate transients.

This includes conducting a spectral analysis, in which instruments on observatory telescopes split the light from a transient object into its individual colors to reveal its distance from Earth and other properties.

"Classifying 10,000 supernovae is a tremendous achievement and will enable unprecedented scientific studies of explosive transients," said ZTF team member Eric Bellm, a UW research associate professor of astronomy and scientist with the UW's DiRAC Institute. "Reaching this milestone required careful technical work on scheduling and processing the ZTF discovery images, human and machine vetting of the alerts and obtaining timely follow-up spectra."

For the Bright Transient Survey, a 60-megapixel wide-field camera mounted on Palomar's Samuel Oschin telescope scanned the entire visible sky every two nights. To detect new astronomical events, astronomers subtracted images of the same portion of the sky from subsequent scans. Next, members of the ZTF team studied the subtracted images and triggered follow-up spectral observations by a second telescope at Palomar or other observatories.

Bellm, UW research scientist Melissa Graham and Mario Jurić, UW professor of astronomy and director of the DiRAC Institute, all contributed to the Bright Transient Survey. Bellm managed alerts of new transients and scheduled imaging for the survey. Jurić helped set up the ZTF's automated system to alert team members around the world of new transients.

Developing automated analysis pipelines and alert systems are critical for the field as more powerful imaging technologies and new generations of observatories continue to transform astronomy into a "big data" endeavor. Fritz Zwicky, a 20th century astronomer who first coined the term "supernova," identified 120 supernovae in 52 years. The Bright Transient Survey by the ZTF—named for Zwicky—found 10,000 in a fraction of that time.

"The Bright Transient Survey program serves as an exemplar for the kinds of science we hope to do with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in the near future," said Bellm.

Under construction in Chile, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory is the future home of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, or LSST, a mission that will take deep images of the sky nightly and detect even more cosmic transients than ZTF. UW scientists with the DiRAC Institute have been heavily involved in planning for the launch of the LSST. Collaborations like the ZTF have been a proving ground for developing and testing methods for use in the LSST.

For the Bright Transient Survey, Graham conducted follow-up spectral analyses of transients at Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico. These efforts were especially valuable in catching some of the fainter, fading supernovae that would have been missed at Palomar.

"As UW astronomers, we are so fortunate to have access to the Apache Point Observatory for our research," said Graham. "One of the most impactful—and fun—parts of obtaining optical spectra is being surprised by rare transients with peculiar characteristics, which often reveal more about supernova physics than hundreds of ordinary objects. Figuring out how to do this work with the even larger number of LSST supernovae is the next big challenge."

Most of the transients in the Bright Transient Survey are classified as one of two common types of supernovae: Type Ia, when a white dwarf steals so much material from another nearby star that it explodes, or Type II, when massive stars collapse and die under their own gravity. Thanks to the treasure trove of data from the Bright Transient Survey, astronomers are now better equipped to answer questions about how stars grow and die, as well as how dark energy drives the expansion of the universe.

After its expected 2025 commissioning, the Vera Rubin C. Observatory could discover millions more supernovae.

"The machine learning and AI tools we have developed for ZTF will become essential when the Vera Rubin Observatory begins operations," said ZTF team member Daniel Perley, an astronomer at Liverpool John Moores University. "We have already planned to work closely with Rubin to transfer our machine learning knowledge and technology."

ZTF will continue to scan the night sky for the next two years.

"The period in 2025 and 2026 when ZTF and Vera Rubin can both operate in tandem is fantastic news for time-domain astronomers," said Mansi Kasliwal, an astronomy professor at Caltech who will lead ZTF in the next two years. "Combining data from both observatories, astronomers can directly address the physics of why supernovae explode and discover fast and young transients that are inaccessible to ZTF or Rubin alone. I am excited about the future."

Well I'm still sick and I don't have any energy to draw (I'm starting to feel way more better than the last couple days)

But seeing everyone making posts of Halloween it makes me feel kinda left out because in my country we don't celebrate Halloween, so I'll just jump in and write about my OC's Halloween costumes (even tho we Dominicans don't celebrate Halloween)

Nicole= She would still be a Sugar Glidler at this point so she'll just wear something cute like this.

Mercudi= he could get dressed up like Jesus.

Megan= she wouldn't wear anything because she hates Halloween (due to familiar and lore reasons).

Hatāśā= he will mistake Halloween with Christmas so he'll wear Christmas clothes.

Milfra= she would wear something similar to the super Mario bros but more female like.

Bonnie= Since she's blind she won't know what to put on.

Count Bleck & Timpani

(A/N): Yes, I made the fanart, you like it? <3

His name, "Bleck", is normally used as onomatopoeia for disgust, but can also be interpreted as a corruption of "Black", referring to darkness (his Japanese name is a play on the French word for "black", noir.) His real name is likely a portmanteau of blue, referring to his color, and lumière, the French term for light and a reference to his status as a member of the Tribe of Darkness. (In spanish his name changes to "Conde Cenizo", which translates as: Count Ash. Why does it change? Idk)

He later learned that his father threatened Timpani. Blumiere learned that they could not be in love here, so he proposed to her. Though before they could be married, his father abducted and banished Timpani from their dimension, wiped her memory, and cursed her to wander through worlds until the day she died. Upon learning of Timpani's disappearance, Blumiere traveled through dimensions to search for her, unaware that she had been found barely alive by Merlon, and was turned into a Pixl known as Tippi in order to save her. It is implied by one of Carson's stories that he met Nastasia at some point during his search.

Blumiere eventually returned home after thinking that Timpani was gone forever. He believed that life and existence are meaningless without her, so he stole the Dark Prognosticus and used its power to destroy his dimension, and he decided to do the same to every world. Blumiere took the alias of Count Bleck, and along with his new assistant Nastasia, he moved to a new castle in a world of darkness and is eventually joined by Mimi, O'Chunks, and Dimentio. He also intends to create a new perfect world once the original is destroyed, but Dimentio claimed that he never actually intended to keep his promise.

After his minions are defeated and Mario reunites with Peach and Bowser, Count Bleck stops treating Mario as a "mere annoyance". Bleck turns to the Dark Prognosticus and learns that a "man in green" is the main factor of determining whether the prophecy of destruction will pass. He orders Nastasia to brainwash Luigi into Mr. L and attempts to stop Mario with him. However, Mr. L is defeated like his other minions. Bleck becomes angered after his attempts to stop Mario failed, and he confronts them in person in Sammer's Kingdom. He argues with Tippi over his motives and the value of all worlds, and begins to suspect that Tippi may be Timpani.

After Mario and his team obtained the final Pure Heart from the Overthere, Bleck orders his minions to try and defeat them when they arrive at his castle. Dimentio later reveals to Bleck that Tippi mentioned the name "Blumiere", which confirms she is Timpani. Nastasia begins to urge him to call off the void, but due to him being too far along in his plans to stop the Chaos Heart's destruction, he ignores her urges, and secretly hopes that Mario and his team will be capable of defeating him and saving all worlds, feeling he's come too far to back down.

When Mario and Tippi reached the inner sanctum of Castle Bleck, Bleck and Tippi once again argue before he sends Nastasia away and engages Mario in a battle. Bleck is initially immune to all attacks due to the Chaos Heart, but Bowser, Peach, and Luigi grant the Pure Hearts the power to negate the barrier. After Bleck is defeated, he insists the Mario to end his game before the Void destroys all worlds, against Tippi's wishes.

Before his death, Dimentio manages to leave behind a "shadow" of his power, which will ensure all worlds will end as revenge for his death. As he is aware of the urgency of the situation, Count Bleck returns everyone to the chapel where the Chaos Heart was born, and he and Tippi exchange vows and wed each other. The true love between them supercharges the Pure Hearts, uniting them into the Purity Heart that destroys the Chaos Heart and reverses the prophecy of destruction.

Bleck claims that using his and Tippi's love to stop the Void would cause both of them to "cease to exist", but both Merlon and Nastasia believe that he is living happily together with Timpani. Because Bleck is now gone, his minions decide to create the perfect world that he promised them. In a post-credits scene, the count's silhouette is standing near that of a woman in a meadow, which is implied to be Timpani (the latter having regained her human form), implying they survived.

Count Bleck's motives in the game are mostly caused by the sadness of losing Timpani. At the start of the game, he seems to be a villain with no feelings who wishes to end all worlds due to the power given by Dark Prognosticus. As the story progresses, his sympathetic traits are revealed and reasons are given to his actions.

Prior to his meeting with Timpani, Bleck was known to be extremely kind and cherished all life and the universe itself. When he met Timpani, he fell in love and was extremely caring and devoted to her, but when his father sent Timpani away to travel through dimensions till she dies, Bleck began to feel vengeful towards the world and thought life was worthless without her. This caused him to seek the destruction of all worlds, and he shows his vengefulness by wiping out his own dimension. Bleck has a hatred against all worlds and sees them as the things that took his love away from him, which he continues to think until being defeated.

In spite of his insistence that Blumiere was dead, Bleck still shows some redeeming traits. When he teleports to Bowser's Castle to reveal that he had captured Princess Peach, he bows and "politely" introduces himself. During the Prologue, Mimi states being with the count is her idea of a perfect world and Bleck says he will make his minions' dreams come true. He gives Mimi a gift of power during the events of Chapter 2 and his minions happily take their missions to stop Mario and his allies. He is frightened when Nastasia takes a hit from Dimentio for him and he is flattered when his minions also assist him with restoring the Pure Hearts. Count Bleck constantly refers to himself in third person and deviates from this trait when he is alone and after he is beaten. His habit of narrating himself indicates he may be quoting the Dark Prognosticus's text.

The inside of the cape is dark blue and starry, and when he opens his cape during the cutscene in Bowser's Castle, a unique design is shown. This design is from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and depicts the pattern used atop the pedestal in the room with The Thousand-Year Door when Mario presents a Crystal Star. He also wears a large red brooch, white gloves, and wields a brown scepter topped with a blue jewel. On his left eye is a monocle, and his eyes and mouth are both red and glowing. However, both his eyes and mouth become light blue when he is defeated, and remains like that until the Pure Hearts are restored.

Lady Timpani

Her name Tippi refers to the tips she gives to Mario in her tattles. Her real name, Timpani, is derived from a kind of drum used in orchestral music. This 👇🏻

Prior to becoming a Pixl, Tippi lived in an unnamed village as a human girl named Timpani. At one point, she happened across an injured man known as Blumiere, lying at the base of a cliff. Despite recognizing him as a member of the Tribe of Darkness, she opted to do what she could to nurse him back to health, much to Blumiere's surprise. The two continued to see each other after his recovery and despite the protests of Blumiere's father, who opposed dirtying the blood of the tribe by permitting a union with a human. In light of threats to Timpani's safety, Blumiere proposed to her, suggesting that they leave their home dimension and spend the rest of their lives searching for a place where their love could flourish.

It was then that Blumiere's father followed through on the threats he had made; although the exact fate he subjected Timpani to is unclear, If we see the memories, we can assume that he put a type of curse on her that would condemn her to wander through the dimensions, without remembering anything of her past, until her game ended. Although, two of the memories recalled by Tippi at the end of certain chapters concern conversations between Blumiere and his father that took place after she had supposedly been cursed. This implies that she was present and overheard them somehow, in a manner that prevented Blumiere from noticing her in the proces.............

In the events of the game, Tippi appears to take an especially strong liking to Mario and tends to speak for him during cutscenes. She often does not get along well with characters who travel with the heroes, such as Squirps and Luvbi, though by the ends of their respective chapters, she generally comes to appreciate them more.

Prior to the battle with Fracktail, Tippi appears to recognize Dimentio immediately after he appears. The reason for this is never explained or even hinted at throughout the rest of the game. However, in the Japanese version of the game, this line more closely resembles recognizing him as a minion of Count Bleck, as opposed to knowing him personally.

Finally, after the final battle, the heroes and villains are returned to the chapel of Castle Bleck, where Bleck and Tippi exchange vows and wed each other at long last, using the true love they possess as a last effort to shatter the Chaos Heart and save the universe. After this event, Tippi becomes a human again and she and Bleck disappear to an unknown location following their marriage.

The fate of Blumiere and Timpani is hinted at in two parts. The first is an in-game dialogue between them, which includes a mention of going to a "place" where they both could be happy together. The other occurs after the credits; Timpani and Blumiere are seen walking off into the distance on a grassy field.

Trivia: Tippi's name, is not the same in all the versions. In Italian switch her name Tippi to ConsiliaClipping of consigliare ("to suggest")��and 'Lady Farfalà', From farfalla ("butterfly"). And, in spanish her name is "Pisti" from Pista (tip), and 'Pistina' Portmanteau of Pisti and the female termination ending -na. (A/N: Why? IDK).And it gets stranger, since, in the original language (i.e. Japanese) her name isAnnaPun on「案内」(annai, "guidance") and the given name "Anna", and エマ Ema, respectively.

AND, It is not something that many know, but the game makes a great spoiler. Right at the time you get Tippi, you can go to Flipside Pit of 100 trials and after passing the first 10 pits, you will get the card with Tippi's information, which contains her real name, thus making you discover Timpani past before world 6 where it is revealed.

Luchino Visconti ou Luchino Visconti di Modrone, conde de Lonate Pozzolo (Milão, 2 de novembro de 1906 — Roma, 17 de março de 1976) foi um dos mais importantes directores de cinema italianos. Era descendente da nobre família milanesa dos Visconti.

Biografia

Filho de Giuseppe Visconti, o duque de Grazzano e de Carla Erba, herdeira de uma grande empresa farmacêutica, Luchino tinha mais seis irmãos. Prestou o serviço militar como suboficial de cavalaria, em 1926, no Piemonte, e viveu os anos de sua juventude cuidando dos cavalos de sua propriedade. Além disso, frequentou ativamente o mundo da lírica e do melodrama, que tanto o influenciou.

Foi para a França, onde se tornou amigo de Coco Chanel e, através dela, em 1936, foi apresentado ao cineasta Jean Renoir, com quem trabalhou no filme Une partie de campagne. Em 1937, passou por Hollywood, antes de retornar a Roma. Na capital italiana, trabalhou com Renoir na direção da ópera Tosca.

A partir de 1940, ligou-se aos intelectuais que faziam o jornal Cinema e vendeu jóias da família para realizar seu primeiro filme, Ossessione, em 1943, com Clara Calamai e Massimo Girotti. No fim da Segunda Guerra Mundial realizou o segundo filme, o documentário Giorni di gloria. Contratado pelo Partido Comunista Italiano para realizar três filmes sobre pescadores, mineiros e camponeses da Sicília, acabou por fazer apenas um, A Terra Treme.Clara Calamai e Massimo Girotti em Ossessione (1943)

Em 1951 ele filmou Bellissima , com a grande atriz italiana Anna Magnani , Walter Chiari e Alessandro Blasetti . O primeiro filme colorido foi em 1954, Senso com Alida Valli e Farley Granger . O primeiro grande prêmio da crítica chega em 1957, quando ele recebe o Leão de Ouro do Festival Internacional de Cinema de Veneza pelo filme" Noites Brancas ", uma transposição delicada e poética de uma história de Fiódor Dostoiévski , com Marcello Mastroianni , Maria Schell e Jean Marais .

O primeiro sucesso de bilheteria viria em 1960 com Rocco e Seus Irmãos , a saga de uma humilde família de calabreses que emigrava para Milão. Foi o filme que consagrou o ator francês Alain Delon ao lado de Annie Girardot e Renato Salvatori . No ano seguinte ele se juntou a Vittorio De Sica , Federico Fellini e Mario Monicelli no filme de episódios Boccaccio 70 . O episódio de Visconti é estrelado por Tomas Milian , Romy Schneider , Romolo Valli e Paolo Stoppa .

Em 1963 dirigiu seu maior sucesso comercial e um dos filmes mais elogiados pela crítica, o grandioso O Leopardo , com três horas de duração e extraído do romance homônimo de Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa , vencedor da Palma de Ouro do Festival de Cannes , que conta a história da transição da nobreza para o populismo na Sicília, nos tempos da Unificação Italiana . O filme tem um elenco estelar onde destacam Burt Lancaster , Claudia Cardinale e Alain Delon.

Vaghe stelle dell'Orsa…, um mergulho inquieto e melancólico na capacidade dos seres sensíveis para se destruírem amorosamente, com Claudia Cardinale e Jean Sorel, realizado em 1965, foi a obra seguinte. Em 1970, ele conheceu o fracasso de uma obra sua, com O Estrangeiro, extraído do livro homônimo de Albert Camus e realiza também La caduta degli dei que lançou o actor Helmut Berger.

Com o sensível e refinado Morte em Veneza (1971), protagonizado por Dirk Bogarde e baseado na obra de Thomas Mann, ele voltou a se encontrar com o sucesso de público e de crítica. O filme conta a história de Gustav Aschenbach, um compositor que vai passar férias em Veneza, e acaba por viver uma grande e inesperada paixão, que iniciaria a sua completa destruição. O filme faz uma abordagem do conceito filosófico de beleza, assim como a passagem do tempo a importância da juventude nas nossas vidas. O filme seguinte foi o grandioso, mas decepcionante, Ludwig, com Helmut Berger e Romy Schneider. Durante as filmagens de Ludwig, ele sofreu um ataque cardíaco que o prendeu a uma cadeira de rodas até a sua morte, em 1976.

Mesmo com muita dificuldade, Luchino Visconti ainda fez dois filmes, Violência e Paixão (Gruppo di famiglia in un interno) e L'innocente, sua derradeira obra, versão do romance de Gabriele d'Annunzio que registra brilhantes interpretações de Giancarlo Giannini e Laura Antonelli.

Vida pessoal e morte

Apesar dos casos amorosos vividos, em diferentes períodos, com várias mulheres, como a estilista Coco Chanel, com as atrizes Clara Calamai (1909 – 1998), María Denis (1916 – 2004), Marlene Dietrich e com a escritora Elsa Morante, Visconti jamais escondeu sua homossexualidade, explicitamente referida em muitos dos seus filmes e nas montagens teatrais que dirigiu. Segundo Visconti, em sua autobiografia, ele e o rei Humberto II da Itália tiveram um relacionamento amoroso durante a juventude na década de 1920. Nos anos 1930, em Paris, teve um relacionamento com o fotógrafo Horst P. Horst. Entre o final dos anos 1940 e o início dos 1950, já consagrado como diretor, manteve uma longa relação afetiva e profissional com o seu então cenógrafo Franco Zeffirelli, que vivia então na villa do diretor, na via Salária, em Roma.

Depois de 1965, Visconti foi ligado ao ator austríaco Helmut Berger , que também atuou em alguns de seus filmes. A relação se manteve, com altos e baixos, até a morte de Visconti, em 1976.

El LOCO BUYO portero del REAL MADRID en la 1era de las 2 TRAGEDIAS CONSECUTIVAS en SANTA CRUZ contra el TENER_I_FE [que supuso perder 2 ligas consecutivas en el ULTIMO PARTIDO a favor del FC BARCELONA por capricho además del CALENDARIO al jugarse el MISMO PARTIDO ]..ante el GRAN ERROR que cometio en el GOL de PIER dijo que NO QUISO LAVARSE LAS MANOS como PILATOS..pues iba perdiendo el REAL MADRID y quedaba poco TIEMPO por lo que prefirió intentar evitar el CORNER ante una CESION LAMENTABLE de SANCHIS [que dijo que la Segunda LIGA la perdieron porque uno de los 2 AVIONES en el que se DIVIDIERON se tuvo que dar la VUELTA al no funcionar el AIRE ACONDICIONADO por lo que se DESHIDRATARON y esperaron 12 hrs en aeropuerto a que el Banquero Encarcelado Mario CONDE les dejara su JET PRIVADO porque era amigo del presidente de REAL MADRID Ramón MENDOZA que se hizo millonario negociando con la URSS en el HOTEL "LUZ PALACIO" en el que se concentraba el REAL MADRID cuando era directivo de SANTIAGO BERNABEU]

Pero lo más polémico de BUYO fue una jugada con FUTRE de AT MADRID..porque le echo mucho TEATRO revolcandose por el cesped para que expulsaran a OREJUELA en el derby MAS POLEMICO en dic'88 cuando JOE LLORENTE del REAL MADRID BASKET se puso junto a mi en un BAR al lado del BERNABEU antes del PARTIDO abriendo el marcador su hermano JULIO que a continuación fue traspasado al TENERIFE [por lo que fue participe de las TRAGEDIAS con el entrenador del TENERIFE jorge VALDANO nacido en LAS PAREJAS, SANTA FE].. donde tuvo un grave accidente conduciendo al darle un ataque Epileptico [29/11/90=día después de mi 19 cumple] y rompiéndole a Joe LLORENTE su camiseta de REAL MADRID BASKET en oct'89 un jugador de la Phillips de MILAN en un amistoso en UN PUERTO REAL donde jugo FERNANDO MARTIN uno de sus últimos partidos antes de matarse menos de 2 meses despues al darle algún tipo de ATAQUE que le hizo perder el control de su coche para cruzar 8 carriles de la M_30 o AVDA de la PAZ sin CONTROL y chocar contra el MARIDO de MILAGROS Romero que acababa de dar a LUZ.
