My friends often tell me i look like my art and i kinda see it. Hooray! Meeting the artist! Except i took matters into my own hands of making my own collage because I Do Not Have Enough Storage Space For Any Other Editing App

Additional shitpost ❤️ the art I've been most proud of are not actually in here, really! I'm mainly proud of the fanart i made for the few smiling critters AU's aaaall the way back feb-march but. I guess the stuff i liked the most i did this year was probably for the one who wilts? Im trying to think of stuff earlier than that. I noticed i definitely had an improvement in art, and i learned i do have a preference of drawing certain ways now too lmao- the fun of art! I hope to improve more in 2025 :-)

I am not a very Secure artist myself (already taking me five minutes to type that out and consider myself as an artist) so im SHOCKED when people Actually like my things. My doodles. Im very, VERY thankful for the people ive met this year through fandom and generally. Unfortunately—for the past few months—Ive hit a really low stump in my mental health that limits me from talking to people without getting super drained, even on social media i kinda struggle with being active again. I am thankful for the people that continue to stick around and know im the way that i am,, one day ill be mentally stronger and everyone is gonna see my growth as soon as i can ,, Actually leave my own home and hopefully start a new. I didnt really consider that until one of my friends shared its experiences with me and i GENUINELY realized i can run away and get better one day,, there is a light at the end of the tunnel,, there IS,, but not now. Not today. Not in a few months. Itll take me years to heal but 2025 and ongoing years as i get more freedom to do so,,

ASIDE FROM CHEESY RANTING OF HAVING HOPES FOR THE FUTURE, YAPYAPYAP- i got a drawing tablet (again another thing my friend inspired me for- technically two major things in a row it inspired me for- hope in the future and drawing BWAHAHA-) and uhhh. my 2025 goals are not just improvement in art,, but in hopes of getting a full time job (since my last full time UMM. did NOT work out well! How am i gonna learn to pay my taxes on my own dawg,) and trying to get a place of my own since i missed out on that two years ago (or one? One year ago? I DUNNO..!!!!) , therapy and trying to heal better compared to my terrible stumps of 2022-2024,, i dunno what else but. Maybe working on my social skills at some point 🗿🗿 a far fetched goal is moving out of state completely and also going on testosterone but that is farrrr from now </33

2023 in Mittens Fic

It's once again time for the annual accounting of things I have written! I think this year's total fic count, at 4, is my lowest ever, but I still managed more words than my two lowest years (peak pandemic, i loathe you still).

For reference, past year end summaries can be found here:

2022 | 2021 | 2020 | 2019 | 2018 | 2017 | 2016 | the closest thing I have to a 2015 wrap up post is the lil bit of text at the bottom of 2016′s post… even though my two most popular fics were from 2015 lololol

So I guess my main writing goal for 2024, since I know I will never surpass my 2015 totals, is to just do better than I did in 2023. Here's to more fic!

I managed a Pinefest fic, a fic I started for DCBB but didn't finish by the draft deadline and posted on my own, an annual destielversary fic, and an annual holiday fic. I think that's the bare minimum of what I try to aim for in a year, so even if I'm personally disappointed I didn't get anything else written in addition to that bare minimum, I'm glad I was at least able to hit that goal. Across this year's four posted fics, there's a total of 110,875 words.

Also, again slightly cheating, but since I've mentioned it for the past two years, I'm still making the @spngeorg podcast! In case the millions of words of meta I've written over the years aren't enough, and you want to hear me yell out loud about the show, you can start from the beginning on Spotify or wherever you enjoy podcasts! Or if that sounds daunting, since I just uploaded Episode 138, 7.12 Time After Time, which makes the backlog a lot to catch up on honestly, you're also welcome to just jump in now. Everyone please come yell with me! I swear, if you do start from the beginning, that I get dramatically better at this whole thing as we go on... at least, I think I have. If nothing else, episodes are far more manageably shorter now that I've developed a system. Only took 2 1/2 years, but here we are... :'D

With that business out of the way, let's break down those numbers! Presented in the order they posted:

Dear Western Red Cedar #2409 (63,433 words rated M) Written for @deancaspinefest with gorgeous art by @alexiescherryslurpy, and inspired by this tumblr post that had been plaguing my imagination for several years. It's a two person love triangle with Forest Ranger and secret bestselling author Dean and small town librarian Cas. Heck I want to go reread it just thinking about it now... this is a happy place fic for me.

one working part (40,051 words, rated E) I started this for DCBB, but failed to make the draft deadline, then finished it before posting began anyway... another canon finale fix-it fic, but this one is heavily It's A Wonderful Life flavored and based on a conversation I had with @greywrenn last year. This story picks up at the beginning of 15.19, and then slowly veers more and more from canon, running alongside canon and making rude hand gestures at canon along the way, because they all deserved to have nicer things than canon gave them.

all the time in the world (1,289 words, rated T) This is my annual Destielversary story, short and sweet. It's set immediately after the events of One Working Part, but you don't have to have read that to enjoy this one. Just know Cas is back with Dean, and they've got the rest of their lives stretched out in front of them.

Christmas, Present (6,102 words, rated T) My annual holiday fluff fic, this time set in an AU, since most of my past holiday fic has been canon universe. A Dean/Cas college AU, with Matchmaker Charlie who just wants her friends to be happy already!

And that's my year in fic (unless I manage to post something else in the next 33 hours or so, and lol no that ain't happening...)! As per usual, I've already written more than half of this year's word total for the 2024 Pinefest, which will post in March... or april... heck when is my posting date even... it's coming soon anyway! But it's all written! :'D

Once again, I've still got so many more stories I want to write. Even the To Be Written list has grown again. My idea list long ago surpassed SABLE status, and yet now there's even more on it...

It's five pages, and two thousand words longer than it was last year. this just gets worse every year :'D

But that means I'll never run out of things to write, and that's always something to celebrate!

End of year wrap up

I am so super late to this, but I’ve done this in the last few years and I think it’s a nice tradition to look back at the accomplishments I’ve achieved. 2022 was a very bleak year writing wise, and I’m happy to say that I’ve slowly started to get my mojo back a bit. My AO3 wordcount for 2023 was 36,936 words, but I’ve also posted some shorter things on tumblr, and I actually made a spreadsheet to track my progress and tally all my written words, including those that get deleted and also those not yet posted, and according to the spreadsheet I wrote 10k more. I still have a lot of WIPs hanging around in my drive, but I’ve managed to finish some of them, and I feel like I have more energy and excitement to finish some more, so, here’s hoping that 2024 will be the year that I actually end up with fewer WIPs at the end than at the beginning (something I tried back in 2020, before the world went up in flames).

January 

Fading in Love (locked to logged in users) (Drarry, Explicit, 5k) I wrote this as a belated birthday present for @sassy-sassy3, it’s an 8th year secret relationship with a lil’ sprinkle of magical theory regarding the Dark Mark.

I decided to try a few prompts for HD Candyhearts and ended up having a lot of fun with them:

I struggled with this so damn much, also wanting to create a vividness that doesn’t really come natural to me, but I’m so happy with how it came out in the end. Plus I got to collab with the amazing @fictional who, as usual, knocked it out of the park with her glorious art.

November

The Potter Malfoy bathroom war of 2007 (locked to logged in users) (Drarry, Explicit, 8k) Another fic that’s been with me for some time, although “only” a year. I saw the prompt for last year’s Suds when claims had closed, so I tried to forget about it but it wouldn’t leave me. I had so much fun writing this, I love writing Harry and Draco bickering and fighting with each other when we as readers know it’s basically their form of foreplay.

When it’s exactly twelve o’clock that night (Drarry, Teen, 6k) This was also a fic one year in the making. I started writing it to post on last New Year’s Eve, but I couldn’t finish it in five days (to my own astonishment), but I’m happy it got to marinate for a while because I added a scene with Scorpius that I’m very fond of.

Gen Life Update (a bit ranty tho)

Figured I write a thingie because I noticed some time has passed me by again because stuff got hectic and ehh the radio silence was not intended but might hold for a bit.

Here is the thing - back in November 2022 my best friend and I had some talks about the future, we are roommates, she has a boyfriend who wants to move in together and our lease will end this year and well.. we put a maybe on moving out in general or extending the lease for a year back then, mainly because such a talk was a bit scary and weird.

For context, we both moved out at age 19 from our family homes and moved in together because were we life living alone is not feasible it is too expensive (and it has only gotten worse since) so we have been cohabitating for over 10 years now and such a big change is just... damn.

Anyway fast forward to the beginning of the year were we got back to that talk and decided yeah, moving out it is we do not like the flat much we hate our landlord because he is a piece of shit but we also have no energy nor want to find a new flat that is kinda affordable (almost impossible) and meets our standards because we are in our 30s now and are not willing to go back to living in a small flat like we used to before this one we have right now (even more impossible these days we pay too much for too little space already)

Now we are suddenly at "fuck this we goin!" because roughly two weeks ago our landlord decided to send a formal letter to inform us that we should pay him more money by the beginning of March. Which: fuck off. Pissed off is a cute way to describe how I regarded this shitty piece of paper from a piece of shit person :) So we went from "maybe" to "we gonna write a formal termination letter today weeehhh~"

What our landlord don't know is that in our first year of living here and noticing that he is difficult (example - one off the electrical outlets is broken, has apparently been broken for a while, this is a wee bit not good and he basically gave us a formal warning that this is our problem we should pay to fix that which is legally not true and just bs but I kept the letter so if he wants to fuck us over I have proof that he was aware of the issue and did not care There were other issues with the flat too like heating did not work at first, a window mechanism broke in winter and every time we called to have this fixed he dragged his feet, screamed a bit at us and was a lil bitch about it. For the record, I fixed the window myself after training myself on youtube videos and other stuff to identify the problem and then get creative with fixing that because a part was simply broken in the metal frame which would have meant to replace the whole window mechanism and he would not have paid that shit so I had to made do so my roommate would not freeze in the night bc her window was not closing properly (fuck this man so much eyyyy))

Anyway so we noticed he was a prissy bitch which probably was fueled by the fact that he is both rich and a lawyer and therefore two people he clocked as young as stupid clearly can't outwit his greatness and be too difficult because clearly we would not fight him or whatever. Jokes on him, we joined the tenant union in our first year of his bs and dutifully paid our fees to have help on standby when things get even more dicey. So things are dicey now and I know he will probably try to fight us tooth and nail to keep as much of the security deposit as possible and make things hard he is just this kind of a douchebag. But since we are members of this union we have a right to a lawyer from them at no additional cost (which is a perk you reach after 1 year of memebership god bless them) and they are already alerted of the situation and will help us not only combat his rent increase demand (which he technically can do but he did not do it the legal way and so we have grounds to refuse atm, also hitting us well into February with a sudden "this new price at the beginning of the next month" is also not quite legal either soooo) And yeah so we prepare ourselves for a big blow up on our landlords part because he is deeply allergic to people who do not cower and know their rights. So we are down to "moving out? Nah, exit strategies are planned over here now". My bestie will move out in two weeks we currently pack her stuff and dismantle her furniture and I will not stay here for long either. We will have to adhere to the notice period of our termination but hey maybe he just throws up his hands and terminates from his end to make the time shorter so he can get new folks in asap. It will be fun to deny him prominent viewing spots for new prospective tenants simply bc I work from home and have meetings and can't reasonably be expected to be disturbed by viewings and also can not be expected to vacate the premises bc work. I mean I will fuck off from here asap too I am done with the flat, the landlord and if I'm honest, I'm kinda really tired of the city too. Don't get me wrong i love Vienna with all my hart but there is also lots of bs that happened in this city and I am so ready for just getting outta here and go rural.

As for a more positive note to end this on (kind of) I will be moving into my forever home (possibly). We had some deaths in the family in the last four years and some of you know one of them was my dad. he left me this house and while i have still some reservations to call it my own, I am ready to start my life there and make it my own. Still have to go through some stuff because a lot of the stuff from our dead relatives ended up in the house because we had nowhere else to put it than there so we have to make some room to store my stuff at least and then I can slowly work on the rest. I am still kinda apprehensive about a lot of stuff because there are just many ghosts in this house and it will be hard but it also probably will be freeing and good and I want to tend to my garden and despair on the possibilities on so much space like the house is big, I am used to live out of one room and now soon will have two extra rooms to do as I please with and this is wild to me. all of this is kinda wild to me because I never had much money and with how expensive everything is in the city never had much opportunity to put money aside in the first place I was unemployed for a while some years ago i am used to surviving on little and worked myself into somewhat comfortable as i am currently. Moving into this house will be a game changer because it is paid off. This will absolutely change my life in so many ways, many many good ways. I have rich people dreams on renovating the bathroom because I would love to have a bathtub and it doesn't sound as crazy anymore to think along these lines. Wild. But first I have to pay off some debts and my teeth and then watch me go willllld I guess xd It also is a bit bittersweet bc like I said, my best friend and I (we met at 15 and have been inseparable since then) have been living together for so long and I personally have never lived on my own ever in my life and this is kinda exciting but spooky and I look forward to it but also stress out already over all the stuff I have to think about ahead and plan but ehhh for the first time in 4 years I am actually looking forward to the future and feel tentatively hopeful and this is also kinda heavy because it's been a while since I did that, the last 4 years were just a bit too hard to look past the next day or even beyond that. But now I look at my plans for just 2023 and I'm like "fuck yeah, screw surviving I'm ready for thriving" So... Imma be a bit more busy in the next days than I had expected due to vacating my flat as fast as possible and I hate moving but i love the idea of this being the final time so bear with me I work on art still in my downtimes when I need some cleansing but yehhh bit busy. Wee bit busy but finally busy with better things. Hopeful things. Life stuff, you know?

(Official Summary) Harry isn't dealing well with being bitten and turned into a werewolf. Draco isn't dealing well with Harry packing up and leaving like a thief in the night. Things come to a head in a forest cabin in the German Ore Mountains.

(Unofficial Summary) An annoying posh wanker is stuck in a forest cabin for a month with the most frustrating, taciturn prat on the planet. The prat is a werewolf who ran away from home. The wanker desperately wants to make Little Red Riding Hood jokes. They are in love.

I devoured this in just a few nights. Jesus Christ, where do I even start?! There's pining, there's desire, there's a hermit-y Harry deep in the forest in Germany, there's Draco in nailpolish! And it's all so stunningly written. The love and longing between them is so instinctive. I absolutely loved everything about this fic and I am sure it will be read time and time again.

Everyone and their kitchen sink knows how much I love @wrapped-up's work: it's consistently clever, witty, authentic, relatable, written with tremendous care. I always feel in very good hands whenever I slip into these fics, and this current work in progress is no exception: it's funny, heartbreaking, addictive stuff, and it's a real treat watching the story unfold. I can't wait for more. Also, what the heck happened to Regulus?!

Sourdough is the ultimate comfort read. It's warm, gentle, romantic. It treats its gorgeous cast of characters with so much tenderness and care. Rooney's Draco is an absolute joy to read, and his Harry? His Harry? Warmth incarnate. Patience, strength, curiosity; he is the Harry of my dreams. The dialogue is so natural, so real, that I feel like I'm there with them. And the culmination of their careful getting together is just so expertly done.

I love Glee because the music still SLAPS. Like, my GOD. Sometimes the songs are euphoria for my ears!

Okay glad to see that four gifsets actually made it onto the list, that’s nice! But it was fun to take a little look back on those as well as my sillier posts and remind myself how much fun it is to make stuff for my lil fandom

Truthfully I haven’t been in a very gleeful mood lately but maybe this is what I needed to get back into it. Besides I’ve got a ton of positivity posts to make and a ton of reductress headlines stockpiled in my image folders so hopefully the motivation comes to put them all together and get them out there!

Ultra's End-of-Year Recap: Electric Boogaloo

Given how little I think of just how much more insane things can get with each passing year, I really wasn’t expecting how my blog was gonna go in 2022, but after joining an ask blog (Kudos to @another-silly-mixels-blog ), now having little more than 80 followers on here, being a major player in spreading the good word on what’s basically the biggest event in paleomedia in the last few years, and my writing and art skills getting significantly better this year…

I should really give these things more thought, huh? Regardless, I should still celebrate all of the good that came tumbling towards this silly blog of mine. Just like last year, I’m capping off ‘22 with a special ‘lil recap of the biggest events to happen to the Ultra Barrier Reef (And that’s a far better name than what this blog was named originally). Seriously, alot has happened this year, and I really couldn’t be more thankful for all of the support I’ve gotten over the years, both from fans and close friends of mine. You are all amazing! I know I said something like it last time (Maybe?), but consider this my early Christmas present, from me to you.

After seeing @bogleech talking about how Chinchou was a better design than Lanturn, I decided to make a regional form for the lil’ guy, along with adding a new evolution that does both the it and the creatures that it’s based on justice.

If I can be honest with myself, this whole was my Prehistoric Planet Arc. It basically was for alot of people, let's not kid ourselves.

At the end of the day, this was one of the biggest years for the Ultra Barrier Reef. Given that the blog is turning 5 next year, who knows what's gonna happen next? Well, that's the fun part. Down in these shitpost-infested waters, you never know what surprises could bubble up to the surface.

Speaking of surprises, I got an extra-special piece coming up to cap the year off. While you should expect to see that in the next few days, things are gonna be a bit slower for the rest of the year (Mainly due to me taking some time off.).

With all of that said, thank you all so much for the continued support, and I'll be rising back up from the depths next year. Happy Holidays, folks!

@hnt-escape has the most stunning poetry I have ever read. She’s so gracious! She’s inspired me to start writing again and I can’t express just how much I needed that. ❤️ I implore you all to read and reblog her poetry because it’s just that beautiful.

Sometimes serious topics/events in a story weigh heavily on my heart and mind. So I’m pretty cautious about what I read. However, I can always trust @honeymandos and @astroboots and @joultheghoul with my sensitive heart and mood. The story may hurt and be sad as hell, but I feel some sort of comfort or assurance in their writing, like “I’m ready to hurt again, but this [hurt] too shall pass.”

@day-off-inkyoto followed me not long after I followed her and my heart went *~whoosh~*! Her music taste and her rural/country familiarity speak to my soul. Fluff and comfort extraordinaire!

Took a break from playing Hollow Knight by... drawing Hollow Knight characters. I swear this game hasn't taken over my life

1. Monomon! I wanted to try drawing her in my style, she's quite pretty and I really like her

2. Quirrel and Lemm! QUIRREL MY BELOVED, I rotate him in my brain constantly I ADORE him, and Lemm is just a grumpy lil guy! I like him a lot XD. I've been reading Stag Beetles and Broken Legs for the past couple of days and it's making me Feel Things,,, them. That is all.

3. I had some empty space so I drew Flick because they're cute,,, if I ever end up hacking my switch and installing Atmosphere, the first thing I'm doing is creating a Flick sprite pack. I also drew an aspid hunter because... listen they are certainly infuriating but they're SO cute. If Flick ever had a pet, it would be a little semi-tamed aspid to help them with their hunting. They'd probably look at one and see a kindred spirit.

4. Movie of the year?

honestly almost every 2022 movie i watched sucked ass😭😭😭 has to either be glass onion or uhhhhh. i wanted to say el baile de los 41 but apparently that came out in 2020 which was three years ago i fucking hate time💀 so yeah idk 2022 was rly weak for me on the movie front. could've had sherlock holmes 3 but whatever it's fine !!!!!!!!!!

you know it's gonna be our flag means death season 1 episode 9:-( absolutely insane addition to my already insane day, as you know. also the pilot of the iwtv reboot was really fucking good too

9. Best month for you this year?

oh my god i have no idea coz something nice happened pretty much every month but im a very positive person in general so idk. i got to travel in january, i applied to uni in february, march was amazing for every reason ever, i lived with réka my friend réka in april, i got a rly good grade on my finals in may, el my friend el flew to budapest and lived w me for a week in june, we went to Balaton with all my hun mutuals in july, i visited my sister in holland in august, i started uni in september and met a bunch of rly cool people and then october and november are pretty much one big blur so💀💀 but december was great too i finally got to relax a lil. so yeah no way to pick they were pretty much all rly fun

11. Something you want to do again next year?

visiting emilee my friend emilee which i AM doing again in February so😏😏 also going to Balaton with y'all again and hopefully hosting El again if they can make it

19. What’re you excited about for next year?

visiting Emilee!!!! aaoufgdudshsushdu and also ofmd season 2 and being done with my exams and maybe figuring out what the fuck i'm gonna do with my life

20. What’s something you learned this year?

i think in 2022 i finally managed the process of letting myself feel like people genuinely like me and aren't just pretending to like me so they can make fun of me. and also that bleeding myself dry for other people just to make sure they don't leave me isn't necessary because the people i interact with now don't just like me for the things i can do for them. and the biggest lesson of 2022 is that sometimes people will literally just do things for you because they're nice and they like you and it's okay to ask for help with things and to accept help with things. idk just a lot of very necessary emotional growth that I couldn't have had if it hadn't been for everyone i interacted with that year but yeah overall 100% positive mental health progression

2022 Art Summary

it is that time of the year again, folks. this year has felt like forever and so short simultaneously. it’s felt like nothing and everything was happening. it was a weird year for me, probably because for the most part it was rather monotonous. but there were some good things to look back on, and as per usual i’m here to round it up here for you all to look at and enjoy :3

i’ll be honest. i was really worried about the art summary this year at first because these first few months were so sparse. i even considered just condensing the whole thing into quarters since this one was so lacking. but as the year went on, the more things i had to share, so for sake of brevity i will be putting the first three months up all at once

included in this quarter are assorted Cosmic Legacy character sketches, a Genshin Impact sona to continue the trend i had wanted to set at the end of 2021 (which i did not continue afterward), a lil valentine’s day present to my girlfriend, and a shiny form for my sona that was just part of a inside bandwagon. not much to say otherwise :/

the one major thing that happened in the first few months of 2022 was that i FINALLY. GOT MY HANDS. ON A NINTENDO SWITCH. I CAN NO LONGER MEME ABOUT BEING SWITCHLESS

so that was pretty exciting :>

the release of Pokemon Legends: Arceus is what broke me, but before i played that i started off with a blind nuzlocke of Pokemon Shield, which is what the lil digital doodle in March is about; i had just caught a Stunky i named Wasabi and i was indifferent to Stunky up until catching him where i just fell in love with it

so, AI art, huh? this was when it was burgeoning, and still fun and popular to make. so when i saw some people using a 3d pokemon generator i made a whole bunch and gave it a go. i generated about 30 of them and hadn’t quite gotten to around a third of that, but the few i did were really fun to draw!

(the lil gremlin one at the top corner is uncolored here bc when i did try to color it my brain fully glitched and screwed up royally so i opted out of showing my failure here lol)

so my friend Cake started streaming a game called Your Turn to Die with me and our partner Stacey during the spring starting in late March, and it was such an incredible time that i miss being a part of (if you wanna watch our full playthrough, the vods are saved on her channel here)

so towards the end of our playthrough i decided to try my hand at drawing some stuff because my brain could not simply hold all of my feelings for them

i am definitely not biased because i played both Keiji and Rio Ranger in the stream, but i sure did like them a lot, and it was really fun to draw them :>

had a lot of cosmic drawings this month, most likely due to celebrating the One Year Anniversary of the concept at the beginning of the month! we celebrated with a cute little collab. i happened to continue the cosmic train on my end by coming up with a funny meme video idea (that we will get back to multiple times later on) and i also worked on a couple pieces in preparation for an upcoming event in the next month...

I FINALLY REMEMBERED TO SIGN UP AND PARTICIPATE IN ARTFIGHT FOR THE FIRST TIME

it was a really fun event but i did not anticipate how late i would start my entries and how much time it would take to do them well, so i only got a few out, but i’m really proud of them! it was awesome to see all these brain children of random people from all around, and to get a couple responses back of my own as well! i’m excited to give it another go next year :3

i did not get a whole lot of art things done this month because MY GIRLFRIEND (and her roommate) CAME FROM OVERSEAS TO VISIT!!

it was such a great time being with them, and we had so much going on i didn’t get much opportunity to do much, but that was fine. one thing, related to my partner actually, is my pokemon gym trainer sona here! Stacey had been thinking about a fakemon region and wanted her friends as gym leaders, so i offered myself as a ground-type trainer, since it’s one of my favorite types and is rather underrated

a little more work got done on the cosmic meme video, and a couple other lil doodles. not much else artwise, but an awesome month regardless :3

idk why this month was so lacking, cuz this is pretty much all i had lol

the one decent sketch of my sona being angy was inspired by a post i found on here that was like... if you were a villain in a movie, what song would be playing at the point you would snap

and the choice i made was Faint by Linkin Park cuz it seemed applicable. and then my brain decided to listen to it on repeat and i ended up drawing that sketch. so that was cool :0

as per usual i do at least attempt to do an october art challenge, and this time i wanted to try this year’s annual list from Thomas Sanders, and it was pretty fun! i was really into it the first week, but then i got behind and after that point many of the prompts didn’t hold my attention, so... i trailed off. again

but! i do really like these ones in particular. didn’t really have much else after that so i’m glad i had fun with those

again this is p much all i had - november was a pretty nice time actually, with lots of gaming stuff going on with me n friends, but not so much art stuff was going on then

after having completed playing pkmn shield back in june, i tried my hand at pkmn legends pretty much right after that... and it didn’t quite click with me, though i did really like it. and then over the next few months i got back into pkmn go and that’s when i realized That’s more like what legends is about - it just screwed me up coming from a regular pkmn game. so, this month, i picked it up again and i’ve gotten much farther and much more attached!

in addition, later in the month my friends and i got back into playing stardew valley after nearly a year’s hiatus, and we made our characters based on the main trio in Cosmic Legacy, and so i drew Lalun with a parsnip. it was funny

and speaking of cosmic and video game things, Sonic Frontiers came out and i... did not get that one (though i will one day cuz it looks rad) BUT one of my friends got super into it and got me hooked on one of the songs, and then the part of my brain that associates fandom stuff with songs (a rarely triggered part of my brain) started to tie that to [REDACTED] here, as inspiration for their character. maybe. idk but the song gave me vibes that they could definitely have and i thought it was cool and i made a cool art with it too so yay

and here we are, at the end of the year! the sonic hype train was still rolling so i thought about giving them another go and they turned out pretty good! and i pumped out some more pokemon content at the very end to inflate this month’s art stuff a lil bit more

OH YEAH and that cosmic meme got finished just in time for crimmis! here is the link to that since i would not post it here

all in all it’s been. a year, to say the least. i am definitely looking forward to new things in the new year, but this one had been pretty alright. lots of fun and memorable things that hopefully i can continue doing similarly in the future :3

Top 50 Albums of 2022

7. Dawn FM by The Weeknd

For an album to come out in early January and maintain my interest for an entire year, even with a mountain of other great music released each week, is quite the accomplishment. But then when you have global superstar Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd, once again delivering another visionary and cinematic pop record like only he can, we can't be too surprised. As a huge fan of both The Weeknd's music and concept records in general, this one was always going to land high up this list.

Going back to March 2020 to the height of global lockdown for just a moment, where Abel gifted us his fourth studio album After Hours, a record filled with heartbreak and hedonism that brought a much-needed escape from the reality of what was happening in the world at that time. It went on to become by far my most played Album of 2020, helping me and I’m sure many others to get through the toughest of years. That album and the success of singles like Blinding Lights and Save Your Tears also helped catapult Abel to another level of superstardom, even leading him to headline the SuperBowl Halftime show in 2021.

Fast forward almost a year on from that star-making performance, and Abel returned in January 2022 with his latest opus, Dawn FM. Much like After Hours, Abel had seemingly delivered the perfect vision for that exact moment in time. Whilst the world was once again stuck in between a return to some sort of normalcy on one hand, but also some returning COVID restrictions on another, Abel took the dancefloor to limbo on this highly ambitious concept album set in his vision of the afterlife. Speaking on the concept for the record which sees none other than actor Jim Carrey take on the role of a paranormal disc jockey, Abel has explained:

“Picture the album being like the listener is dead. And they’re stuck in this purgatory state, which I always imagined would be like being stuck in traffic waiting to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. And while you’re stuck in traffic, they got a radio station playing in the car, with a radio host guiding you to the light and helping you transition to the other side. So it could feel celebratory, could feel bleak, however, you want to make it feel, but that’s what ‘The Dawn’ is for me.”

It’s a grand vision but one Abel controls masterfully alongside his collaborators, with Max Martin, Oneohtrix Point Never, Swedish House Mafia and Calvin Harris just some of the production credits listed here. Alongside the aforementioned Jim Carrey, artists such as Quincy Jones, Tyler The Creator and Lil Wayne also crop up to lend their inimitable voices to proceedings as well. However, despite these assistants, the imagination on display remains uniquely Abel’s, with his own vision and voice keeping things anchored. The most impressive element of the whole record though is how it’s so cohesively woven together, with each track seamlessly segueing into the next, as if you were indeed sat in the car just casually jamming along to the radio.

The album begins with the epic, synth-driven title track, that starts with some birds whistling before Abel anxiously sings “Make me believe in make-beliefs, 'Cause after the light, is it dark? Is it dark all alone?” Soon Jim Carrey arrives to welcome the listener properly to “103.5 Dawn FM” which then leads seamlessly into one of the record’s most interesting tracks in Gasoline, where Abel’s distorted vocal bounces off an intoxicating whirlpool of 80s synths. 

How Do I Make You Love Me follows which has been one of my most played songs of the year, with its infectious synth-pop groove and instantly catchy chorus. Before you’ve had time to catch your breath, Abel takes it away with the aptly-titled lead single Take My Breath. Arriving to take things up yet another notch, I’m thankful Abel chose to include the longer and superior version of the track with the extended instrumental intro passage into the final album cut. Sacrifice then completes this incredible opening five track run, with a super funky lead guitar line and a good dose of disco flair.

The hits don't stop there though with the sumptuously melodic Out of Time, the rumbling pulse of Best Friends and magical, spacey electronics of Starry Eyes helping to keep the strong momentum going. Abel then manages to deliver towards the back end too, thanks to the neon-soaked beams of Every Angel Is Terrifying, the wonderful 80s groove of Don’t Break My Heart and the brilliantly anthemic synth-banger and hugely popular single, Less Than Zero. 

The album then closes quite beautifully with a spoken word piece written by Jim Carrey entitled Phantom Regret, which he ends by saying “God knows life is chaos, but He made one thing true - you gotta unwind your mind, train your soul to align, and dance 'til you find that divine boogaloo.” Poignant and poetic, it makes for a simply sublime ending.

Beyond the record itself, the music videos to accompany each single were also as ever outstanding. The trippy animated video for How Do I Make You Love Me you can watch above, but I highly recommend checking out the others for Gasoline and Out of Time when you get chance too.

All in all, this is a deep, pensive record that carries plenty of emotional weight, but will also have you dancing and singing away with the biggest smile on your face. I think After Hours will always be the sentimental favourite due to how much I leant on it during lockdown, but this is arguably an even stronger and more cohesive outing for The Weeknd. Thoroughly deserving of its place inside my Top 10 Albums of the Year, this is a hugely impressive concept record and an utterly engaging listen from one of the most fascinating and visionary popstars on the planet.
