I spent some time with a friend yesterday. We briefly came on the topic of Palestine. Briefly because I knew we would have opposing views as she's Muslim. I have sympathy for Israeli and Palestinian civilians. She only has sympathy for Palestinian civilians. She wouldn't even refer to Hamas as a terrorist organisation. And it made me wonder how many Muslims have been told that Hamas is not evil? How many are taught that Israel is getting what it deserves? It makes me wonder why there are many many pro Palestine protests calling for a ceasefire but Jewish communities are getting no support whatsoever. Saying the word Israel feels like it is something dirty. And I am scared. I know Israel and Palestine have been in conflict for years and Israel has oppressed Palestine for a very long time. But how can people think that a terrorist organisation will bring them liberation?
Hi Nonnie, I'm sorry you had this experience. I'm sending you hugs!
I wanna introduce you to Mansour Abbas:
He's a devout Muslim Israeli Arab, and the chairman of an Arab Islamic party in Israel. He's not a part of the current governing coalition in Israel, but he was a part of the last one. He is still a member of the Knesset (MK, member of the Israeli parliament).
A few days ago, MKs were invited to see a 40+ minutes long film composed of footage from the Hamas terrorists, CCTV, victims cellphone recordings, etc. It's some of the horrors that most people haven't seen. No MK had to attend, and quite a few chose not to. I can understand, many of those who watched the footage fell apart, some couldn't stay to the end.
Mansour Abbas chose to come, and he brought with him two MKs from his party. One of the Jewish MKs said Abbas was crying during the screening. Abbas himself made it clear that what the Hamas terrorists did was sacrilege and goes against everything that Islam stands for. When one of the members of his party, an MK who didn't attend the screening, denied the horrors of the massacre, he demanded that she resign from the Knesset (heads of parties can't fire MKs, the latter have to resign). She's refusing to, and according to journalists, Abbas is looking for other ways in order to sanction her.
I'm saying all of this, because I want it to be clear that, much like every other human group, Muslims are not a monolith. Yes, there is a history of antisemitism in Muslim majority countries, that tends to be ignored (something that we have to address, if we want any hope of eradicating that antisemitism and make relations between Jews and Muslims better). Yes, there is a tendency to present the Palestinian issue to Muslims as if it's an Islamic issue, so they're all meant to take the same stand on it (and of course that can go hand in hand with a lot of misinformation. I have an online friend, who lives in a country, where I expect none of what she hears about Israel and Hamas is true). But Muslims are not a monolith, especially ones who live in the west, and have free and full access to information, to the real historical records, and not just to anti-Israeli propaganda.
So that brings me to two points that can and do coexist:
I do NOT want to treat all Muslims automatically as if they will for sure be against Israel to the point of having no empathy for Israelis and/or Jews...
If they are against Israel to that extreme degree, and if they are living in a western country, then it is, at least partly, on them.
And in this context, I'd like to share this vid that was sent to me.
youtube
So regarding this friend, I guess it's a question of how you feel about it. Do you think she has the conditions to look beyond this narrative, and see Israelis as people, who deserve empathy just like everyone else, and yet she doesn't?
(as a very small footnote, I wouldn't say that Israel oppresses Palestine, 'coz that makes this conflict far more one-sided than it actually has been...)
I'll say that for myself, that friend who lives in a country that is defined as an enemy of Israel? Where she will never get the truth (and that country doesn't exactly have free press in general)? I don't hold it against her. In her context, it's pretty amazing she's even talking to me when she knows I'm an Israeli. But other Muslim friends I have? Or even other non-Muslim friends from the west, who know Jews, who should know better than to uncritically accept a de-humanizing narrative? Yeah, I feel differently about them. IDK if this helps you in figuring out how you feel about this girl. I hope it does.

ISRAEL REALTIME - "Connecting the World to Israel in Realtime"
Shavua Tov.
🔻ANTI-TANK MISSILE HIT FROM LEBANON… An anti-tank missile was fired today at noon at a civilian building in the Upper Galilee, there were no casualties, but a lot of damage was caused.
🔸ROCKET ALARM in Migdal HaEmek, Nazareth and Afula declared a FALSE ALARM.
▪️FIREFIGHT - LEBANON… (enemy video) heavy cross-border gunfire at Kfarkela and Israel. Airstrike.
▪️PM PRESS CONF AT 8:15 PM.
▪️ISRAELI POLITICS… Israeli Arab party leader of Ra’am, Mansour Abbas called on the terrorist organizations to disarm. But then under the pressure of criticism from the Arab community made it clear that the intention was only after the establishment of a Palestinian state.
▪️HOSTAGES - HOW IT IS DETERMINED THEY ARE DEAD WITH NO BODY… What was behind the declaration of the hostages as murdered was the meeting that took place with the Chief Rabbi on Thursday in the presence of representatives of the security forces and health system, together with the director of religious affairs Avidan with 2 other senior rabbis including the senior judge of the Great Rabbinical Court. After they were presented with evidence from security and health officials, they determined they are undoubtedly dead and stated that the hostages can be determined to be martyrs. This solves issues of missing status and potentially agunos (women who can’t remarry because husbands don’t give a divorce). This is a dramatic ruling that follows the path of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt”l from the time of the Yom Kippur War.
▪️HOW ARE THE HOSTAGES, REALLY? Director General of the Ministry of Health Moshe Bar Siman Tov: "We have NOT seen people who returned in good condition from captivity.” Two hostages had such bad medical intervention that they likely have over a year of surgeries and rehabilitation, with likely permanent loss of mobility (one in the leg, one the arm).
▪️OFFICIALS OUT OF TOUCH… (1) UN Sec. General: on sexual violence by the terrorists of Hamas: "There are a large number of reports of sexual violence during the heinous acts of terrorism by Hamas on October 7 that must be investigated and prosecuted."
(2) US Vice President Kamala Harris: "We support Israel's military operations with the aim of eliminating Hamas, but too many Gazan citizens have been killed. Israel must do more to protect them. We want to see Gaza and the Palestinian Authority united under the rule of the Palestinian Authority"
▪️EGYPT THREATENS AID WITHOUT SUPERVISION… A source privy to the details told a Qatari newspaper that "Israel is disrupting the introduction of aid to the Gaza Strip" and thus "creating a bigger crisis." After the strip was divided into zones, Cairo fears: "The goal is to slowly displace the residents towards the Egyptian border.”

How do you feel about Palestinian Israeli politicians, specifically Mansour Abbas and/or Ayman Odeh, who I often see portrayed in Jewish media as Arab/Palestinian non-Zionists who seem willing to work with Jewish/Zionist political movements to make Israel a more equitable place. On the other hand I’ve heard criticism about their parties on issues not related to the I/P conflict (Ra’am being homophobic and Hadash being in the tank for Putin, basically)
There’s also Sally Abed, who I mostly know for her occasional presence on the liberal English-language Israeli podcast The Promised Podcast, who is often very critical of Zionism but is also one of the heads of an organization whose entire purpose is Arab/Jewish solidarity
I sincerely admire Mansour Abbas (and everyone who was in the last sane government). I'm sure Odeh has said some things I'd disagree with, but he also accepts Israel as a Jewish state and opposes BDS, so beyond that it's not fair or reasonable to ask for more. Hadn't heard of Abed and am several years behind on podcast recommendations, but will bear that one in mind!
EDIT: I've read conflicting material on Odeh, my apologies if the initial summary was wrong. If he accepts Israel and opposes BDS, good; if not, fuck him.

In Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza, right on the border with Egypt, comes a heartwarming story of the violence one terror group, Hamas, visited on members of a rival group, Palestinian Islamic Jihad. More on this fracas can be found here: “Trouble in paradise? Clashes between Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Rafah. Media silent, as usual.,” Elder of Ziyon, July 19, 2023:
Last night, a mob of Hamas members entered a Gaza mosque and attacked Islamic Jihad officials there. Hamas militia and the militants from the Al-Qassam Brigades attacked two members of the Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Jihad Movement, in the city of Rafah. Eyewitnesses reported that Hamas members stormed the Al-Awda Mosque, which is affiliated with Islamic Jihad, and assaulted the PIJ officials there…. Islamic Jihad issued a statement saying…they were surprised at the large numbers of Hamas members attacking the mosque….
The Hamas mob – who came armed with knives, and used as well chairs inside the mosque – severely injured Yahya Mansour and another “official” of the PIJ. If other PIJ members were attacked, their injuries were not severe enough to merit mention.
There are clearly tensions between Hamas and Islamic Jihad that no one is talking to the media about. And they are both trying to keep their differences quiet. Islamic Jihad’s statement ended off with: But notice how the media simply doesn’t want to cover a story about major differences between the two largest armed groups in Gaza. It is almost like they agree with the terror groups that it is better to keep these things private and only attack Israel.
Why would a Hamas mob attack members of Palestinian Islamic Jihad just now? They are not allies but rival terror groups, both in Gaza, where Hamas has ruled the Strip since 2007, when it killed or expelled hundreds of Fatah members, and in the West Bank, where both terror groups have been making inroads at the expense of the Palestinian Authority, attracting young disaffected Palestinians who despise Mahmoud Abbas for his corruption, and mismanagement, and want more attacks on the hated Zionists.
The 44-hour war in Jenin camp launched by the IDF was aimed only at the PIJ, that had recently been responsible for several murderous attacks on Israeli civilians. In all that time, Hamas did not lift a finger. It did not launch rockets into Israel from Gaza; no Hamas fighters joined the PIJ in trying to fight off the IDF in Jenin. After the campaign was over, Hamas joined all the Palestinians in declaring a “victory” over the Zionist enemy, supposedly “driven out of Jenin camp” by Palestinians whom Hamas refrained from identifying as PIJ fighters. But that was the extent of Hamas’ participation.
This was the second time this year that the PIJ faced Israel without any support from Hamas. Between May 9 and May 13 the IDF attacked PIJ fighters in Gaza. Gaza’s ruling Hamas supported the PIJ only by sharing a joint command room, but it did not fire a single rocket.
Since the Jenin mini-war, the PIJ has been fulminating against Hamas’ failure to. support it, depicting itself as now the sole paladin of the Palestinian “resistance.” Naturally this claim has infuriated Hamas, that is not solely a terror group as the PIJ is, but also has the responsibilities of rule in Gaza, and has therefore tried not to be drawn into hostilities with the IDF, knowing what the result would be.
The PIJ’s criticism of Hamas’ inaction during IDF attacks in both May and in July, was what finally led a Hamas mob to enter that mosque in Rafah to teach the PIJ a lesson. The result was the violent attack on two PIJ officials, including Yahya Mansour. Judging by the PIJ’s mild verbal response, it is now worried about other attacks by resentful Hamas members, and will likely tone down its criticism.
As for those of us watching from afar, we can only hope that these scorpions in a bottle will continue to sting one another. Pull up a chair, and watch.

Mansour Abbas meets with families of hostages, delivers letter to Emir of Qatar calling for release
The parents, speaking of captive children, say it's "not about fighting terrorism. It's not about the war or the conflict, it's not about politics," but "our shared humanity at [its] very core."
By JERUSALEM POST STAFF NOVEMBER 21, 2023 02:44
MK Mansour Abbas, leader of the Ra'am party [Islamist conservative party in the Knesset], met with families of some of those held hostage in Gaza. He received from them a petition from Nobel laureates and a legal document signed by legal experts calling for the immediate release of the more than 30 captive children. Attached with the petition and the legal document was a letter from the families.
The letter, signed "Families of abducted children in Gaza," speaks about the more than 30 children who were abducted into Gaza on October 7. "These children are our own," the parents say, "as vulnerable as a 9-month-old baby, a 3-year-old girl, an 8-year-old boy, in dire circumstances.
"This letter is not about fighting terrorism," they said. "It's not about the war or the conflict, it's not about politics. It is about our shared humanity at [its] very core."
Abbas: Islam cannot accept this situation
At the meeting, Abbas expressed his sorrow and said that he shared in the families' pain. He added that all citizens of Israel, Jewish and Arab, must take care to be inclusive and understanding in order to protect their shared future.
At the end of the meeting, Abbas vowed to take action. "Children are not part of war and they must not be held captive for one day," he said. "A two-year-old child is not a bargaining chip and is not part of the deal. Islam cannot accept this situation, and we will do everything possible to help the families and bring the children home."

The Incomparable.
The fifth part in my Morocco series (please see here, here, here, here and here for more).
This is El Badi palace (today’s post is only about the time this was built and destroyed; please see here for earlier history and here for later history).
El Badi was built in 1578 by Ahmad al Mansour, sixth of the Saadian Dynasty, who ruled Morocco from 1549 to 1669, having taken over from the Wattasids, who were unpopular for losing the European empire that was ruled from this city from its founding in 1070 until the expulsion of the Wattasids in 1492 from what became the kingdom of Spain.
In the same year, the Spaniards expelled all Jews and Muslims, even though they had lived there for hundreds of years, and many fled to Morocco, thus bolstering the European influence (workers from around the world, Europeans as well as Moroccans, were employed in the building) which had been known here since the Almoravids (1056-1147) built an Andalusian empire from this city which is most clearly seen at Koutoubia Mosque.
The Saadians, whose nearby tomb is also well worth a visit, became wealthy and wanted to build a huge mansion to show their wealth and the power they gained from winning (most of) the wars they waged, and you can still here how imposing their statement was.
They fought off endless attacks from the Spanish, Portuguese (who ruled the nearby city of Tangiers from 1471 to 1661; is a a Portuguese camp in which El Badi is in the top right and you can see the rest of the city as was), the Ottoman Empire (who ruled every Arab country except Morocco, because the Saadians and their successors fought them off).
As well as defending their country from the Europeans and Ottomans, the Saadians could start wars; in 1591 Ahmed Al Mansour conquered the Songhai, an empire in sub-Saharan Africa; Morocco is linked not only to Europe and the Muslim world, but to its African neighbours, and the south was to become a source of slaves and money for Moroccan rulers from then on.
El Badi was already in decline when the last Saadi ruler, Ahmad Al Abbas, was murdered by his uncle in 1659, which led to a civil war that only ended when Al Rashid ibn Sharif seized power in 1666; he boasted descent from Mohammed, founder of Islam, and formed the Alaouite dynasty, which still rule Morocco in the person of present king Mohammed VI.
El Badi was knocked down knocked down by the fearsome ruler Ismail ibn Sharif, whose lengthly reign lasted from 1672 to 1727. He was an Alaouite, brother of Al Rashid ibn Sharif, who fought a series of wars but took no interest in the Saadian palace, which he gutted to use the material for a palace at Menes, which I sadly haven’t seen.
By this time, the English had taken over the old Portuguese colony at Tangiers, on the marriage of Charles II to Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza, but Ismail booted us out in 1684.
It is rarely talked about in England because it went so badly for us-Charles, in angry humiliation, wanted to “demolish and utterly destroy the place” on the way out, but thankfully this didn’t happen.-
It was a great success for Ismail though, and he also subdued the Berber tribes of the Moroccan heartland (please see here for a glimpse into their way of life which I was allowed to share) who are still here and whose blood flows in the veins of many city dwellers.
Ismail, nicknamed “the bloodthirsty”, owned hordes of slaves whom he seized and then used to fight his endless wars against the Europeans, Africans, Ottomans, and other Moroccans; he is a forefather of current king Mohammed VI, and presumably lots of others as he enjoyed his shagging and has at least 868 known children with at least 500 known wives and mistresses.,
(This was long seen as normal for Moroccan rulers; 4 is an enormous harem where Saadian rulers would keep their wives and mistresses).
(His work is arguably unfinished; at the time of his death he was besieging the Spanish colony of Ceuta, which alongside nearby Melilla is still occupied by Spain, something to bear in mind when the Spanish government next pontificates about Gibraltar).
Leaving the palace I walked into (10) one of the many oases of palm trees that brighten and cool the city.
Here and elsewhere (please see enclosed the rest of my series) we see that Morocco, which has been linked to Europe since Almohad times, can take its place alongside the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans in the living museum with no frontiers that is the Mediterranean.

What we know
Israel said its troops had reached Gaza's coastline and split the enclave in two between "north Gaza" and "south Gaza" in its ground operation against Hamas. That development is likely to fuel new questions about the fate of the Palestinians now massing in the southern half of the Strip, which continues to suffer intense bombardment and a shortage of key supplies.
Israel has rebuffed mounting calls for a cease-fire, saying any deal would require the release of all hostages held by Hamas. The U.S. is pushing for a humanitarian pause in fighting amid growing anger at the civilian suffering.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in Turkey after surprise visits to the occupied West Bank and Iraq, while the CIA chief is in Israel as Washington seeks to prevent a broader Middle East war.
More than 1.5 million people have been displaced in Gaza, and health officials there say more than 10,000 have been killed. Israel says 1,400 people were killed in the Hamas attack, and 240 are still held hostage.
NBC News’ Richard Engel, Raf Sanchez, Erin McLaughlin, Josh Lederman, Matt Bradley, Hala Gorani, Jay Gray and Chantal Da Silva are reporting from the region.

U.S. targets in Iraq and Syria were attacked at least 10 times since Thursday
Courtney Kube
Bases in Iraq and Syria with U.S. personnel have been attacked at least 10 times since Thursday, bringing the total number of attempted attacks on U.S. targets in the region since Oct. 17 to 38, according to three U.S. defense officials.
The officials say most of the attacks have come via one-way drones and rockets, and there have not been any new U.S. casualties or damage to infrastructure.
Most of the newest attacks occurred yesterday and today, according to U.S. officials.
At least 19 of the 38 attacks against U.S. targets have come since the U.S. launched retaliatory strikes on two Iranian-linked targets in Syria on Oct. 26.
Before they retaliated, U.S. and coalition forces had been attacked repeatedly in Iraq and Syria, according to defense officials.
The U.S. defines attacks as attempted strikes on U.S. facilities. Not all attempts actually reach the U.S. targets.
Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Defense Department press secretary, said on Oct. 24 that the groups conducting the attacks are supported by Iran and its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
“We always reserve the right to defend ourselves, and we will never hesitate to take action when needed to protect our forces and our interests overseas,” he said.

A thing that I think a lot of anti-Zionists/pro-Palestinian activists don’t get: you cannot shame Israelis with attacks on their morality, if they genuinely believe their actions are in defense of Jewish lives. The thing is, as far as I could observe there was a very high 1-to-1 correlation between “Palestinian nationalism” and “violent antisemitic terrorism” in the Israeli mindset, and that was *before* Oct. 7th. Things were actually getting a little better due to the political ambitions of Ayman Odeh and Mansour Abbas making it clear that Jewish/Arab collaboration could be possible (even if it hadn’t reached the point necessary to really start dealing with the myriad areas of tension between the two groups) and before the attack Hamas was seen as a bunch of violent antisemitic gangsters, but ones who could be persuaded to work with Israel on logistical issues for their own benefit. All that is gone (or at least severely weakened), and people again feel that Hamas is a threat to the existence of Israel and are willing to support terrible things to make them not a threat any more.
