Faster Sewing With Jigs
Taking a break from mask sewing to talk about how to speed up assembly line production when sewing things like masks. Photo heavy post inbound.
Repetative sewing tasks are all about speed. To make things go faster, consider setting up marking jigs and some alignment markers on your machine.
Tumblr media
These are the jigs I’m using for the pleated style masks with a removeable nose piece, elastic straps, and an opening for adding filter material, in the above picture.
Tumblr media
Top is the basic pattern for tracing. The notches on the sides are pleat line markers, top and bottom hem fold lines, and the dots at the top are for sewing the seam slot..
1) is to mark the location of the elastic straps on the pleated piece.
2) is for marking the channel for the removeable nose piece. The rounded hump marks the slot opening sewn in the seam.
3) Strip used to press up the bottom hems.
4) Jig for cutting elastic strips
Not shown is the jig for marking the bottom opening.
After tracing and cutting out the pattern, I use the strip to press up the bottom hem.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To quickly stitch the 1/2″ side seams, I set up a painter’s tape alignment line directly on my machine.
Tumblr media
The space between the needle at center position, and the edge of the tape is !/2″. (I left the gap open between the two tape pieces to change out the bobbin.)
Tumblr media
The tape edge allows me to quickly visually line up the fabric, and keep a consistant 1/2″ seam allowance, without having to mark each piece or try to use the tiny lines on the throat plate.
The line that says “Needle” on the tape marks the position of the needle. The line that says 1/4″ marks a 1/4″ before the needle position. This is used to turn corners for a 1/4″ seam or top stitching, without having to mark the corner pivot point.
First you stitch down the side, until the fabric leading edge aligns with the 1/4″ mark. With the needle down in the fabric, raise the presser foot, pivot the material, lower the preser foot, and now the edge of the fabric is at 1/4″.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To mark the topstitching for the channel that has the removeable nose piece, it’s important to line up the gap, and have the width and length of the channel correct. Here’s the slot in the top seam:
Tumblr media
Those small black dots mark the topstitching for the channel. With the jig for this, I line the rounded part up with the gap, mark at the seamline on both sides, and across the bottom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since each mask needs to be marked in the same way, and stitched in the same way, these jigs and tape lines eliminate having to measure each piece, each fold line, each channel over and over again, saving time and effort.
Each of the jigs and the pattern are made with oaktag. If you have manila folders on hand, those are of a similar weight and can be used to make jigs to speed things up for you, too.

PRRD mulls ‘climate emergency’ declaration
#PHnews: PRRD mulls ‘climate emergency’ declaration
MANILA – President Rodrigo Roa Duterte will consider declaring a "climate emergency" in the Philippines to help achieve its goals under the Paris Agreement, Malacañang said Monday.
Environmental group Greenpeace Philippines earlier urged Duterte to declare a "climate emergency" after urging parties of the Paris Agreement to honor their commitment to fighting climate change during the recent United Nations General Assembly.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that while it will be up to the President to decide on Greenpeace’s proposal, Duterte recognizes the importance of addressing climate change.
“Well, that will be a decision of the President. Pero the fact na sinama po ni Presidente iyong climate change sa kaniyang talumpati nang kauna-unahang pagkakataon sa UN General Assembly ay nagpapakita na talagang binibigyan ng prayoridad ng ating Pangulo ang problema ng climate change (But the fact that the President included climate change in his maiden speech before the UN General Assembly shows that he really prioritizes the problem of climate change),” he said in a virtual presser.
Roque explained the Philippines is among the countries most affected by the effects of climate change.
“Isa kasi tayo sa parang top 5 o top 10 countries na pinakamaaapektuhan ng climate change ‘no at kung hindi nga po maaabatan ang climate change baka lumubog ang malaking teritoryo ng Pilipinas ‘no pagdating ng panahon (We are, I think, among the top 5 or 10 countries most affected by climate changes and if we cannot do something about it now, then there’s a possibility that a large part of the Philippines’ territory will sink in the future),” he said.
Climate change, he said, is among Duterte’s top priorities.
“Ang masasabi ko lang po, top of the agenda po ng ating Presidente iyan (All I can say is, that’s at the top of the President’s agenda), and the President will consider the suggestion made by Greenpeace,” he added.
In his speech before the UNGA last Wednesday, Duterte said that climate change has “worsened” the ravages of the pandemic.
He said it was just as important to address climate change as urgently as the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
“The same urgency needed to fight Covid-19 is needed to address the climate crisis. This is a global challenge that has worsened existing inequalities and vulnerabilities from within and between nations,” he said.
In 2017, Duterte signed the Paris Agreement which aims to reduce the emission of gases that contribute to global warming.
He previously had doubts over signing the treaty, fearing it would limit the country's industrialization.
In a statement, Greenpeace country director Lea Guerrero urged Duterte to issue an executive order “to put climate action at the center of all policy decision-making from local to national level.”
“Aside from calling in countries to enhance their commitments to the Paris Agreement, the declaration must also be a call for climate justice and hold big polluters -- fossil fuel and cement companies -- accountable for their role in driving climate change, which has placed millions of Filipinos in vulnerable situations with loss of lives, homes, and livelihoods,” Guerrero said. Unvaccinated Anti-Vaxxer Female Suspect in Taguig caught desperately forced for the EVC and throws one ABS-CBN Microphone for its PH Media Abuse Presser [#OnlyOnRadyoBandera]
TAGUIG, MANILA -- The first day of the Enhanced Vaccination Checkpoint (EVC) was so chaotic in General Santos Ave., Brgy. North Daanghari, Taguig City, Metro Manila by Friday morning (January 21st, 2022). The Vaccination Card is for those who entered and back from this said city. Female anti-vaxxer suspect named Renelie Joie Cadeliña who harassed the checkpoint and batters her green broken bottle off-camera as a self-defense before facing the televised media on national television, with its seriousness of maximum tolerance.
"Karapatan kong hindi magkaroon ng bakuna. Kailangan ko lang ng trabaho, bakit nyo kailangang tanggapin?" (I have the right not to have the vaccine. I just need a job but, why do you have to accept?). Cadeliña did not show a Vaccination Card as her anti-vaxxer suspect said aggressively in Tagalog dialect, she didn't want to be vaccinated ever in person.
Her female resident in Brgy. Lower Bicutan here in this said city angers out as ordered from the Taguig government by simply giving an Identification Card (ID). She tries to discuss by force upon giving her own information, the Philippine media are taking her side in everyone's conversation to the public. Members of the televised media including SMNI, NET25, GMA News and CNN Philippines. Cadeliña ignores herself badly against the media and grabs one ABS-CBN microphone to throw it down as she committed busted for a media interview abuse LIVE on camera.
Shortly after this said abuse, she simply took her own name inside the Taguig checkpoint with a total unlawful disrespect. And since she was a resident of the city, she was just sent home for nothing.
Taguig City PNP named Hiyasmine D. Navarro told ABS-CBN News, the Vaccine Cards without a birth date and photo will not be accepted before and during the said checkpoint as due to lack of its simple requirements. "Itong dalawang Vaccine Card, wala naman po may presentang valid ID. Kasi kahit sino naman, pwedeng magsulat lang ng ganito... Wala ma lang 'Petsa ng Kapanganakan' at 'Litrato'. Kahit sino, pwede mag presenta ng ganyan kaya lang, papano niya patunayan ngayon na kanyang ganito?" (These 2 Vaccine Cards, they don't have a valid ID to present. Because anyone can just write like this... There is no 'Date of Birth' and 'Photo'. Anyone can present like that just because, how can she prove now that she is like this?).
EVC is one of the busiest streets in Taguig. Each passerby must present a Vaccination Card. With the exception of Cadeliña, who was angered earlier, those who were not vaccinated could not be sent home lightly. But they don't force people who don't want to be vaccinated once becoming an anti-vaxxer. They have some options as warned from the Taguig PNP: just go home, show a negative Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test, or undergo free swab testing by the Local Government Units (LGUs).
Taguig Safe City Task Force (TSCTF) chairman named Atty. Clarence Santos said, a shuttle service at the bus stop is more unlikely for Cadeliña as anti-vaxxer suspect leads for suffering a Battered Woman Syndrome (BWS) as a self-defense and attempted domestic violence in media interview abuse under a reference from the Republic Act #9262: Section 3c & 26 or Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004 and a single felony of Maximum Tolerance with her lack of identification process of the Republic Act #11525: Section 12 or CoViD19 Vaccination Program Act, and the Batasang Pambansa #880: Section 3c or Public Assembly Act of 1985.
Some other passengers are heading themselves through the Vaccination Hub safely in Brgy. Lower Bicutan of Taguig. "Ang gusto po namin na lahat po sila ay bakunado na. Kapag malaman po namin sa isang tsekpoint na hindi ba po sila bakunado, may nakaabang po diyan na nakita nyo po sa shuttle service bus na mag-dederecho po sa kanila sa pinakamalapit na Vaccination Hub". (We want them all to be vaccinated. When we find out at a checkpoint that they are not vaccinated, someone is waiting there that you saw on that shuttle service bus to direct them to the nearest Vaccination Hub).
Unvaccinated patients will also be helped to bring to the nearest testing center. EVC will be implemented on their selected city streets each week.
Two of the Facebook netizens told Radyo Bandera, she needs some rest as per simple advice in Tagalog dialect, "Dapat dyan sa babaeng yan na nagwala, turukan ng Sinovac, Astrazeneca o Pfizer na bakuna habang matulog". (That woman who has gone astray should be injected her with Sinovac, Astrazeneca or Pfizer vaccine while sleeping). The other Netizen said, unprofessionalism in media industry identities didn't look right at that time as a pre-determined CoViD-19 spreader, "Any parties should not get so dramatic or drastic. It means all sides should stay calm and maybe positive to be confirmed. All of her side should not be shamed or to be unprofessional. The respondent should be given a proper test the said virus of Coronavirus Disease-19 (CoViD19) Omicron variant to know the severity level. False alarm or not, CoViD19 has just a flu hybrid with a protective covering spike protein". The assurance of news reporting in media interview abuse against Renelie Joie Cadeliña compromises more to comply than a stalking point and discrimination as per Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)'s Labor Advisory #03-21: Section 3.
As for Cadeliña alone, she will be facing herself to 6 to 12yrs. in prison as per Prisión Mayor for a severe penalty by court. The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will soon face the anti-vaxxer suspect at a nearest Taguig court room or the Taguig PNP detention cell in a coming days or months, after she threw one ABS-CBN microphone committing herself a media offense in press freedom, which is a different story from the ABS-CBN shutdown.
Whether she liked it or not, Cadeliña will correct her honest fault, for a public media interview through ABS-CBN News or facing its consequences with a personal disrespect and maximum tolerance in jail time without any single apology from its jurisdiction of media interview despite both for a later tolerance and discrimination.
EDITOR’s RANT NOTE from RP#4’s Miko Kubota: *honest facepalms* This is so disgusting for your ragequits for skipping your CoViD-19 vaccine. Anti-vaxxers like you is more just either a racial slur issue or I would say, it’s a terrible game for Omicron in common regulars. *confronts aggressively point-of-view to Renelie Joie Cadeliña* As a gamer like me for my take in our news assignment in this article from our friends at the Hinobi newsroom gets ZERO lives. Your GAME is OVER and who cares!? I’m a former BIRTHDAY RUINER before Season 1 of my show of “Glitch Techs” as a kid -- and things are different to me at all. Go get vaccinated unless later discriminated to yourself and interviewed in its televised media. Your just an absolute vulgaritive jerk as consistency for its maximum tolerance! Your MIC is yours, NOT your serious criminal garbage. Hope you can understand that as my role in our internet network presidency and a station manager myself with support from Rhayniel. In behalf from our team at my fictional character of “Glitch Techs”... I’ll meet you soon one-on-one, if you REPEAT THAT CONSEQUENCE right now. *two-fingers pointed you, face-to-face* So be it. -- MK

DOH aims to test 1.5% of population by end of July
#PHnews: DOH aims to test 1.5% of population by end of July
MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) is aiming to test 1.5 percent of the Philippine population for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) by the end of July.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the agency plans to maximize the country’s testing capacity which is currently at 50,000 per day. Currently, laboratories are only able to conduct 10,000 to 11,000 tests per day.
“Mayroon na ho tayong strategies na ini-employ (We are employing strategies) for these things para po magkaroon tayo nang stable na outputs (so that we can have stable outputs) per day and hopefully we can reach this goal of having 1.5 percent of the population tested by the end of July,” she said in a virtual presser in Malacañang.
To be able to maximize the testing capacity, Vergeire said there should be an increase in samples submitted to laboratories.
Vergeire said there should also be more laboratories licensed to operate in the country. From the current 59 labs, the DOH plans to increase number to 60 to 65 labs by end of July.
She also emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in sourcing medical supplies for labs.
The DOH is also carrying out the hiring of encoders assigned to process Covid-19 data.
She also assured that the agency continues to address its backlogs due to operational issues.
“With these operational issues that we encounter daily, talagang hindi po maiwasan na mayroon po talagang nagkakaroon ng bottleneck (we cannot avoid having bottleneck),” she said.
Based on President Rodrigo Duterte's 11th report to Congress on Covid-19 response, a total of 398,914 tests have been conducted as of June 4.
There are 140 laboratories that are currently being evaluated in a bid to boost the country’s testing capacity, the report read.
Around 112 of the 140 laboratories are already at Stage 3 and above, it added. (PNA)

At least 35 people died from smoke inhalation when a gunman stormed Resorts World Manila in the Philippines Thursday in an attempted robbery that saw him torch gambling tables, creating a choking amount of smoke, law enforcement and company officials said. After attempting to flee with the casino's gambling chips, the gunman left the casino to a room in an adjoining hotel, where he holed himself up before taking his own life, Resorts World COO Stephen Reilly said in a presser conference on Thursday. Police told ABC News the initial investigation indicated that all of the victims, who were found mostly on two floors, died from smoke inhalation as the resort was set on fire.

'Pisay' to continue helping communities amid pandemic
#PHnews: 'Pisay' to continue helping communities amid pandemic
MANILA – The Philippine Science High School (PSHS or Pisay) will continue to provide aid to communities and front-liners nationwide amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) outbreak, its chief said. "It (outreach program) started around March 20. We are still doing it, and we are running out of raw materials. Thus, production is low," PSHS executive director Lilia Habacon told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) in a message on Saturday. In a virtual presser on Friday, Habacon said under the outreach program called "Pisayuda" ("Pisay" and "ayuda" or assistance), the PSHS provides face shields, alcohol, food packs, and fresh food to front-liners and communities. As of Friday, some 24,253 face shields had been distributed, along with 9,945 food packs and PHP539,495 worth of fresh food. "We give these to front-liners and challenged families. About 80 percent of our donations come from the PSHS employees, alumni, and friends," she said, adding that the PSHS provides the manpower and supplies, among others. Habacon said this is being done nationwide and that the PSHS would continue this program. Meanwhile, Habacon said "Pisayuda" is something that she did not plan. The idea, she said, started when one teacher posted a photo on his/her social media account, wherein he/she was printing a face shield using his/her own 3D printer. "I tagged all the directors in that post. In two days, face shields were produced," she said. Habacon said they decided to continue the idea and turned this into an outreach program. Those who would want to be part of the program or to contribute may reach out to the office of the executive director, or call 8939-7747, she said. (PNA)

DA assures sufficient food supply until June
#PHnews: DA assures sufficient food supply until June
MANILA – Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary William Dar on Thursday assured the public that the country has adequate supplies of food, including rice, until June amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.
During a virtual presser of the Food Security Task Force, Dar said the country has rice stocks sufficient to last for 84 days.
Dar noted that the projected ending stock in June 2020 is good for 111 days for chicken, 12 days for fish, and eight days for pork.
The supply outlook for other crops, on the other hand, is seen to last until 147 days for corn, 28 days for vegetables, and 21 days for garlic and onion.
Dar said aside from ensuring food sufficiency during the Covid-19 emergency, the DA would also provide adequate support to boost local food production.
“Nais po namin siguruhin na meron tayong sapat na suplay ng pagkain at itaas pa ang produksyon ng mga ito, kabilang ang bigas, karne, isda at gulay (We want to ensure that we have sufficient supply of food and we want to increase the production of these major staples, including rice, meat, fish, and vegetables),” Dar said.
“Para mapalakas pa ang local production makakaasa po ng mga ayuda at programa sa sektor ng sakahan at pangisdaan (To strengthen local production, assistance and program for the agriculture and fisheries sector are in place),” he added.
Under the government’s social amelioration program, the DA will distribute PHP5,000-cash subsidy to 600,000 rice farmers to help augment their needs amid the enhanced community quarantine.
Dar said that 40 percent of the target for the financial subsidy for rice farmers, or around 234,586 beneficiaries, are ready to receive their payout.
The PHP5,000-cash subsidy is part of the DA’s initiatives to assist small rice farmers, who plant one hectare or less, located in 24 provinces not covered by the Rice Farmers Financial Assistance (RFFA) program.
Meanwhile, under the RFFA, 597,505 beneficiaries will receive unconditional cash transfer worth PHP5,000. (PNA)

IATF releases revised guidelines on expanded testing for Covid-19
#PHnews: IATF releases revised guidelines on expanded testing for Covid-19
MANILA – The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) has revised its guidelines on the expanded testing for coronavirus disease (Covid-19) as the country moves closer to the end of the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine on April 30.
In a virtual presser on Monday, Cabinet Secretary and IATF spokesperson Karlo Nograles said the expanded testing will only be conducted on individuals who are “at-risk of contracting Covid-19 infection.”
He said those required to undergo testing are “suspect cases, individuals with relevant history of travel and exposure or contact -- whether symptomatic or asymptomatic -- and health workers with possible exposure, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic.”
Indiscriminate testing beyond close contacts of a confirmed Covid-19 case is not recommended, he added.
He also listed subgroups of at-risk individuals arranged in order of greatest to lowest need for testing.
Those who will be prioritized are patients or health workers with severe or critical symptoms, have history of travel or contact with a confirmed Covid-19 case (subgroup A), followed by patients or health workers with mild symptoms, have history of travel or contact with a confirmed Covid-19 case, and are considered vulnerable (subgroup B).
Next in line are patients or health workers with mild symptoms, have history of travel or contact to a confirmed Covid-19 case (subgroup C), and patients or health workers who are asymptomatic but have a history of travel or contact to a confirmed Covid-19 case (subgroup D).
Nograles said due to global shortage of testing kits and limitation in local capacity for testing, the government will rationalize available tests and prioritize subgroups A and B.
However, in view of the expansion of testing capacity and to ensure health workforce safety, subgroup C will be tested and health workers prioritized.
The IATF has directed all subnational laboratories to allocate between 20 to 30 percent of their daily testing capacity for health workers and the remaining 70 to 80 percent for patients, he added.
Type of test kits
Nograles said the real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and validated by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) is the confirmatory test for Covid-19.
He said rapid antibody-based test kits should not be used as standalone tests to definitively diagnose or rule out Covid-19.
“Because these (rapid antibody-test kits) must be used in conjunction with RT-PCR, care must be exercised to not unduly consume RT-PCR test kits for the sake of confirmation,” he said.
He also emphasized that reporting of confirmed and recovered cases will continue to be based on RT-PCR testing, in accordance with Administrative Order 2020-0013.
“Only rapid antibody-based test kits approved by the FDA and locally-validated by the RITM or the Department of Science and Technology may be used,” he said.
Nograles also reminded that disposal of test kits, including personal protective equipment (PPEs) and other materials used in testing, should adhere to existing guidelines on the management of healthcare wastes.
He said the expanded use of point-of-care rapid antibody-based test kits through validation and sero-epidemiological studies will be explored for subgroup D, as testing all asymptomatic contacts of confirmed cases using RT-PCR is not recommended until there is surplus testing capacity.
“Results of such validation and sero-epidemiological studies shall be submitted to DOH (Department of Health) and to the Health Technology Assessment Council (HTAC) for their review and consideration. This should inform future prospects of financing of DOH and PhilHealth since both agencies may only finance or reimburse Covid-19 test kits that have been positively recommended by the HTAC as required by RA No. 11223,” Nograles said, referring to the Universal Healthcare Act.
Once the FDA-approved antibody-based test kits have been validated by RITM and other designated institutions, Nograles also said only licensed medical doctors may request and administer antibody-based tests.
 Returning overseas workers
Nograles said all returning Overseas Filipinos (OFs) which have community-based Covid-19 transmission have to undergo mandatory 14-day quarantine.
OFWs could also be tested using rapid anti-body tests after they enter quarantine facilities and undergo 14-day quarantine.
He said expanded testing in areas with suspected Covid-19 community-based transmission can be performed at the household, purok, and barangay level with a proper sampling methodology in collaboration with the Epidemiology Bureau and local health officials.
Only properly validated antibody testing kits will be allowed to be used, he added.
Pending availability of plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) validation by RITM, Nograles said all who intend to conduct their own validation studies are requested to register their studies through [email protected] (including update on status of ethics approval), use the protocol for local validation study for asymptomatic contacts provided (Annex C), and report testing results.
He also reminded that testing of asymptomatic people should be performed with proper safety precautions, including hand hygiene, use of appropriate PPE for conducting the test, respiratory hygiene, waste disposal, and patient care equipment.
All symptomatic patients should be referred for RT-PCR testing and isolated accordingly.
Last Friday, National Task Force (NTF) Covid-19 chief implementer Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., also presidential peace adviser, said the government is preparing for the procurement of 900,000 RT-PCR test kits and 2 million rapid testing kits.
The government, he said, will purchase the testing kits along with other medical equipment and supplies to capacitate accredited national and sub-national testing laboratories in the country.
The additional PCR and rapid testing kits cost roughly PHP3.2 billion and will be purchased by the procurement service of the Department of Budget and Management.
As of April 19, there are a total of 6,250 confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country, 409 deaths, and 572 recoveries.
President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to decide on whether to extend or modify the ECQ within the week, according to the Malacañang. (PNA)
