An "evil" police officer who was unmasked as one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders has been jailed for at least 30 years.

David Carrick, 48, was branded a "monster" who carried out a "catalogue of violent and brutal sexual offences" against 12 women over nearly two decades.

Victims described in court how they were raped, controlled and degraded by Carrick, who they feared was too "powerful" to be reported for his crimes.

The former Metropolitan Police officer pleaded guilty to 49 charges - including 24 counts of rape - covering a total of 85 offences.

He was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court.

During his sentencing, the judge Mrs Justice Cheema-Grub said: "These convictions represent a spectacular downfall for a man charged with upholding the law and empowered to do so even to the extent of being authorised to bear a firearm in the execution of his duty.

"Behind a public appearance of propriety and trustworthiness, you took monstrous advantage of women drawn into intimate relationships with you.

"You brazenly raped and sexually assaulted many women, some you barely knew. You behaved as if you were untouchable. You were bold and at times relentless, trusting that no victim would overcome her shame and fear to report you."

The judge went on to speak about a serving Metropolitan Police officer who was raped by Carrick but felt she couldn't report it to her colleagues.

She said: "The police officer you raped in 2004 had herself been trained to deal sensitively with complainants, but she didn't report to you until 2021. The reason was shame and she didn't want to put herself through reporting an anal rape. She described this as a hypocritical view, but she didn't feel brave enough to do it, so she told herself to toughen up and move on."

The case is the latest in a spate of scandals at the Met Police, including the murder of Sarah Everard by then-serving officer Wayne Couzens.

The force was forced to apologise and admit Carrick should have been rooted out earlier after it emerged he came to police attention over nine incidents before he was prosecuted. They included allegations of rape, domestic violence and harassment between 2000 and 2021.

All of Carrick's admitted crimes occurred while he was working for the Met Police.

Known by colleagues as "B*****d Dave", he joined the force in 2001 before becoming an armed officer with the parliamentary and diplomatic protection command in 2009, guarding the Houses of Parliament and embassy sites.

Carrick, from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, was sacked by the Met Police after his guilty pleas.

Officer whipped and urinated on victims

Over a two-day sentencing hearing, the court heard that Carrick held a gun to a woman's head before repeatedly raping her and threatened to use his police baton on another victim.

Some women were urinated on, locked naked in a cupboard under the stairs in Carrick's home, whipped and watched remotely through cameras while he was at work.

He also sent a victim a photograph of himself with a work-issue gun, saying: "Remember I am the boss."

Prosecutor Tom Little KC said: "The reality was that it did not matter who the victim was ... he would rape them, sexually abuse or assault them and humiliate them."

The court heard one victim - Darciane Nunes Da Silva - who was raped and sexually assaulted by Carrick had waived her right to anonymity.

In a series of victim impact statements read by the prosecutor, women spoke of the trauma they had suffered from Carrick's crimes - including some who were left suicidal - and how the case had damaged their trust in police.

Carrick told victim: 'I am the law'

One woman said: "I don't trust the police any more. If anything went wrong I don't know whether I would want to call the police as I'd worry that they would send a male officer like him.

"The thought of being alone with a male officer makes me very anxious."

Another victim said she had been "too frightened" to report Carrick's crimes after he told her "he was the police, he was the law, and he owned me".

Meanwhile, the woman who was raped in Carrick's home after he pointed a gun at her head said she felt she had "encountered evil".

"I honestly thought he was going to kill me that night," she added.

The court heard Carrick relied on his "charm" to "beguile and mislead" his victims, then used his "power and control" to stop them leaving or reporting him.

'He cannot ask for mercy'

One victim described the police constable as "acting like a monster" and said he would call her "his slave", asking her to take her clothes off while cleaning his house.

Carrick, 48, told another victim he would pay her £1,000 a month to be his "slut", the court heard.

One woman, who was repeatedly raped by Carrick, told a friend that "nobody would believe her" if she reported the attacks because he "was a police officer and very powerful".

Alisdair Williamson KC, defending, said Carrick "accepts full responsibility for what he has done".

He pointed out that one victim had noted that "something had profoundly damaged this man", saying Carrick was "testament" to how "the abused" can become "the abuser".

"He cannot ask for mercy and does not," the barrister said.

School of Engineering welcomes new faculty

The School of Engineering welcomes 15 new faculty members across six of its academic departments. This new cohort of faculty members, who have either recently started their roles at MIT or will start within the next year, conduct research across a diverse range of disciplines.

Many of these new faculty specialize in research that intersects with multiple fields. In addition to positions in the School of Engineering, a number of these faculty have positions at other units across MIT. Faculty with appointments in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) report into both the School of Engineering and the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing. This year, new faculty also have joint appointments between the School of Engineering and the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences and the School of Science.

“I am delighted to welcome this cohort of talented new faculty to the School of Engineering,” says Anantha Chandrakasan, chief innovation and strategy officer, dean of engineering, and Vannevar Bush Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. “I am particularly struck by the interdisciplinary approach many of these new faculty take in their research. They are working in areas that are poised to have tremendous impact. I look forward to seeing them grow as researchers and educators.”

The new engineering faculty include:

Stephen Bates joined the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science as an assistant professor in September 2023. He is also a member of the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS). Bates uses data and AI for reliable decision-making in the presence of uncertainty. In particular, he develops tools for statistical inference with AI models, data impacted by strategic behavior, and settings with distribution shift. Bates also works on applications in life sciences and sustainability. He previously worked as a postdoc in the Statistics and EECS departments at the University of California at Berkeley (UC Berkeley). Bates received a BS in statistics and mathematics at Harvard University and a PhD from Stanford University.

Abigail Bodner joined the Department of EECS and Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences as an assistant professor in January. She is also a member of the LIDS. Bodner’s research interests span climate, physical oceanography, geophysical fluid dynamics, and turbulence. Previously, she worked as a Simons Junior Fellow at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. Bodner received her BS in geophysics and mathematics and MS in geophysics from Tel Aviv University, and her SM in applied mathematics and PhD from Brown University.

Andreea Bobu ’17 will join the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics as an assistant professor in July. Her research sits at the intersection of robotics, mathematical human modeling, and deep learning. Previously, she was a research scientist at the Boston Dynamics AI Institute, focusing on how robots and humans can efficiently arrive at shared representations of their tasks for more seamless and reliable interactions. Bobu earned a BS in computer science and engineering from MIT and a PhD in electrical engineering and computer science from UC Berkeley.

Suraj Cheema will join the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, with a joint appointment in the Department of EECS, as an assistant professor in July. His research explores atomic-scale engineering of electronic materials to tackle challenges related to energy consumption, storage, and generation, aiming for more sustainable microelectronics. This spans computing and energy technologies via integrated ferroelectric devices. He previously worked as a postdoc at UC Berkeley. Cheema earned a BS in applied physics and applied mathematics from Columbia University and a PhD in materials science and engineering from UC Berkeley.

Samantha Coday joins the Department of EECS as an assistant professor in July. She will also be a member of the MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics. Her research interests include ultra-dense power converters enabling renewable energy integration, hybrid electric aircraft and future space exploration. To enable high-performance converters for these critical applications her research focuses on the optimization, design, and control of hybrid switched-capacitor converters. Coday earned a BS in electrical engineering and mathematics from Southern Methodist University and an MS and a PhD in electrical engineering and computer science from UC Berkeley.

Mitchell Gordon will join the Department of EECS as an assistant professor in July. He will also be a member of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. In his research, Gordon designs interactive systems and evaluation approaches that bridge principles of human-computer interaction with the realities of machine learning. He currently works as a postdoc at the University of Washington. Gordon received a BS from the University of Rochester, and MS and PhD from Stanford University, all in computer science.

Kaiming He joined the Department of EECS as an associate professor in February. He will also be a member of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). His research interests cover a wide range of topics in computer vision and deep learning. He is currently focused on building computer models that can learn representations and develop intelligence from and for the complex world. Long term, he hopes to augment human intelligence with improved artificial intelligence. Before joining MIT, He was a research scientist at Facebook AI. He earned a BS from Tsinghua University and a PhD from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Anna Huang SM ’08 will join the departments of EECS and Music and Theater Arts as assistant professor in September. She will help develop graduate programming focused on music technology. Previously, she spent eight years with Magenta at Google Brain and DeepMind, spearheading efforts in generative modeling, reinforcement learning, and human-computer interaction to support human-AI partnerships in music-making. She is the creator of Music Transformer and Coconet (which powered the Bach Google Doodle). She was a judge and organizer for the AI Song Contest. Anna holds a Canada CIFAR AI Chair at Mila, a BM in music composition, and BS in computer science from the University of Southern California, an MS from the MIT Media Lab, and a PhD from Harvard University.

Yael Kalai PhD ’06 will join the Department of EECS as a professor in September. She is also a member of CSAIL. Her research interests include cryptography, the theory of computation, and security and privacy. Kalai currently focuses on both the theoretical and real-world applications of cryptography, including work on succinct and easily verifiable non-interactive proofs. She received her bachelor’s degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a master’s degree at the Weizmann Institute of Science, and a PhD from MIT.

Sendhil Mullainathan will join the departments of EECS and Economics as a professor in July. His research uses machine learning to understand complex problems in human behavior, social policy, and medicine. Previously, Mullainathan spent five years at MIT before joining the faculty at Harvard in 2004, and then the University of Chicago in 2018. He received his BA in computer science, mathematics, and economics from Cornell University and his PhD from Harvard University.

Alex Rives will join the Department of EECS as an assistant professor in September, with a core membership in the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. In his research, Rives is focused on AI for scientific understanding, discovery, and design for biology. Rives worked with Meta as a New York University graduate student, where he founded and led the Evolutionary Scale Modeling team that developed large language models for proteins. Rives received his BS in philosophy and biology from Yale University and is completing his PhD in computer science at NYU.

Sungho Shin will join the Department of Chemical Engineering as an assistant professor in July. His research interests include control theory, optimization algorithms, high-performance computing, and their applications to decision-making in complex systems, such as energy infrastructures. Shin is a postdoc at the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory. He received a BS in mathematics and chemical engineering from Seoul National University and a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Jessica Stark joined the Department of Biological Engineering as an assistant professor in January. In her research, Stark is developing technologies to realize the largely untapped potential of cell-surface sugars, called glycans, for immunological discovery and immunotherapy. Previously, Stark was an American Cancer Society postdoc at Stanford University. She earned a BS in chemical and biomolecular engineering from Cornell University and a PhD in chemical and biological engineering at Northwestern University.

Thomas John “T.J.” Wallin joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering as an assistant professor in January. As a researcher, Wallin’s interests lay in advanced manufacturing of functional soft matter, with an emphasis on soft wearable technologies and their applications in human-computer interfaces. Previously, he was a research scientist at Meta’s Reality Labs Research working in their haptic interaction team. Wallin earned a BS in physics and chemistry from the College of William and Mary, and an MS and PhD in materials science and engineering from Cornell University.

Gioele Zardini joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as an assistant professor in September. He will also join LIDS and the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society. Driven by societal challenges, Zardini’s research interests include the co-design of sociotechnical systems, compositionality in engineering, applied category theory, decision and control, optimization, and game theory, with society-critical applications to intelligent transportation systems, autonomy, and complex networks and infrastructures. He received his BS, MS, and PhD in mechanical engineering with a focus on robotics, systems, and control from ETH Zurich, and spent time at MIT, Stanford University, and Motional.

SHERSHAAH: The Kargil Conflict

The Kargil conflict - the toughest mountain warfare ever. Fought at a dizzying altitude of 17,000 feet, this historic war had a lot at stake. The Pakistani troops had infiltrated into the Indian side of the Line of Control (LOC), disguised as Kashmiri militants. The skirmishes quickly escalated into a full-blown war that also chalked the journey of a soldier from Lieutenant to Captain for his absolute dare-devilry and patriotic spirit to unfurl the tricolour at the highest point of conflict. Even if that meant laying down his own life for the cause.But before we get there, director Vishnu Varadhan and his writer Sandeep Srivastava take it slow. So we are taken right back to a childhood sequence of Captain Vikram Batra (Sidharth Malhotra) and shown his growing up years, finding the love of his life Dimple Cheema (Kiara Advani), before he is finally posted at the 13 JAK Rifles as a Lieutenant. While this build-up depicts the character's journey, it doesn't do so very sharply to merit so much screentime. In fact, most of the times, Kiara Advani's track and the romantic songs featuring her, feel like a distraction from the heavy-duty subject at hand. This also impacts the pace of the film that suffers from a slow first half.

Of course, director Vishnu Varadhan had a mammoth task of doing justice to the copious amounts of data and milestones from the Kargil war, but the bulk of it is dealt with, in the second half. Sidharth Malhotra shines in the war scenes and his performance evolves through the film. His earnest efforts to recreate the aura of his character's larger-than-life persona shows on screen and this is one of his better performances. Kiara Advani looks her part as a resolute Sardarni, who loves her man with all her heart. But she doesn't have much scope to perform.

The film's overall tone is obviously high on patriotism. Many combat scenes don't reflect the large canvas that the film is set up on, perhaps more deserving of a big screen experience. Yet, as an industry, Bollywood has seldom churned out epic war films that have been critically and commercially acclaimed. By those standards, 'Shershaah' ranks high than most of the recent war dramas and tells an inspiring story that needs to be told.

In December 2020, India and South Africa called on the World Trade Organization (WTO) to suspend patent rules for Covid-19 vaccines and treatments under the body’s Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. Advocates of the proposal argue that these patent rules have obstructed the mass production of cheaper, generic versions of vaccines by prioritizing the protection of the intellectual property rights of pharmaceutical companies.

I don't know how one can love from the miles of distance without seeing face but by the letters for years constantly! You literally made me cry by your love towards Vikram Batra. At first I thought not to see the movie cause if I do so I may would go back to my agony love. But I deliberately wanted to watch and had watched.

I don't know how your face could be but I can assume that you're the most beautiful woman as your name and eternal human being with big heart. I esteem you by not being in public yet. Perhaps you may feel little more regret by recollecting the memories with Mr. Vikram Batra and that's okay!

The college love of you and Vikram was too innocent, pure and matured. Your belief on Mr.Batra is immortal. When your father had came to know about your love, the courage you have..to speak and staying patience.. I think it's a rare incident for a girl to be like you.!! You're such a strongest woman.

Your affection on Vikram is the other side but your support and passionate through the dreams of shershaah is incredible. You're the "Sherni" to the "Shershaah." Although you both had stayed from miles, You had given him love through the letters which contains ink of emotions of your love. And those letters made vikram smile like childish and it's adorable.!!

The World had got to know about you both is too late but after being awareness about you and Vikram Batra brought your souls high and won many hearts like me.! I'm pretty sure that you still kept that "red duppata" with you when Vikram Batra had wrapped to his finger and said the words that now we can live 40 years together. I knew the love stories of Romeo - Juliet, Devadas - Parvathi, Heer - Ranjha but now Vikram Batra - Dimple Cheema became my favo and I fell in love with your love.

The moment you'd rushed in a crowd to see the late. Capt. Vikram Batra was the undigestable to swallow the truth and cried like a hell by realizing that you'd wore same "red duppata" when you both had a unreal marriage. This made my heart heavy!! In one of your interview (voice note) said that "we will meet one day, it's just a matter of time." It made me cry, cry and cry!! You both are perfect example for love.

The last words from you to vikram "wapas kab aa raha hai" (when will you be back) and then you hadn't thought that vikram will be back in a wrapped tri colour flag which makes you sob a loud. Unknowingly you'd made my cheeks wet with tear drops. How one can imagine and deal a life with this kind of goodbye!? It's been 22 years dimple and it is highly tough to be strength and more power to you! Again I wanna repeat that you're a strong woman. Vikram Batra's life is really inspired and inspiring me and many out there.

And lastly dear dimple!! you remain unmarried till date and leading the life in teaching profession in school. You'd love him from Chandigarh to Sopore and now giving the love from Chandigarh to Heaven. Places may vary but your love is pure constant sardarni.!! This defines your love and affection towards Capt. Vikram Batra. But wherever he's.. Vikram Batra really deserves your love dear 'sardarni.' You're the "Sherni" to the "Shershaah." When tested .. you realise .. functionings of that which had been left aside for salaried staff to do .. you realise how much they did and what went through them .. you realise contribution, effort, time and physical exposure .. and you realise the worth they were bringing to your existence ..

We did ours they did theirs .. life moved on ..

But conditions that prevail, coerce us to take that on, which was taken on before by them ... and the finding that you can not only do what they did but perhaps give suggestions on how the working could improve .. little little thoughts and ideas to smoothen the workings .. staff tend to hold back for fear of overstepping the line of action and not gaining appreciation from the employer .. but these conditions are giving time for interaction, spending and seeking their woes, giving them the confidence that all is fine .. reprimanding less .. explaining in gentle tones the correct way .. or accepting their methods of work and giving them praise ..

Praise never hurt anyone .. a good word put in personally for even the minutest of ‘job done’ fills them that work for you with that much needed adrenalin ..

There shall be errors and mistakes .. there shall be indisciplined nature .. there shall be unconstructive manner .. but there shall also be the learning .. of the sifting .. and they that imbibe that be blessed , for it is divine to accept defeat and get back up to try and beat it .. it is divine to accept that you lost and get in preparation for the win .. it is divine ..

Did I say ‘Yes’? The status of women in India has always been a never-ending topic that would go back and forth over recent decades. Just when it looked like the society had finally come to terms with gender equality and women's rights, it would all be crumbling down once again over the next social issue when disregard for female voices was prominent. However, Indian director Vishnuvardhan’s most recent movie, Shershaah, chronicled sole bravery and self-empowerment during the 1990s. Shershaah might have been a movie on Kargil hero Captain Vikram Batra, played by @sidmalhotra , and his patriotism, but many might overlook his beloved supporter, confidante and love interest, Dimple Cheema, played by @kiaraaliaadvani . All throughout the movie, Dimple had always supported Vikram even if she had imagined a different life with him. She respected his dreams and decisions by patiently waiting for his return from the war but she respected her own even more. For a woman to stand by her own choices in front of her family was not at all acknowledged and typical during the 1990s. Patriarchy prevailed with dominance then, with no hindrance and opposition. However, Dimple continued to fight the silent fight against such stereotypes out of love for Vikram who was at war. Dimple’s reply, “Did I say ‘Yes’?” to her father’s announcement that they had accepted a marriage proposal for Dimple from ‘Bedi’s son’ was unbelievable, a revolutionary step to take for a local, Indian woman then. She is indeed the epitome of women’s empowerment and her personality, a classic presentation of who a woman is in every demeanour. Independence Day Special: 10 films based on true events that will awake the patriot in you

Bollywood has time and again made some brilliant films based on stories from the battlefield. Right from the Independence struggle to wars with other countries, movies have been made to showcase the glory of the martyrs and the brutality of war.

Be it winning against another country or fighting internal battles to save ours, we’ve had films like Border, Raazi, Uri and many more to stir our souls and wake the patriot in us. As we celebrate the 75th Independence Day today, here’s looking at 10 films that are sure to make you proud and hold your head up high with patriotism. Take a look.

Border (1997)

Directer by JP Dutta, Border is a classic and one of the most watched war movies to come out of Indian Cinema. Based on the Battle of Longewala, it covers the the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971.

Haqeeqat (1964)

This film touched upon the Sino-Indian War from 1962. It throws light not only on the brutality of war but also the consequences of it. With a fictionalised representation of the events, the film follows a small platoon into the war and narrates their life and how the war impacted them.

1971 (2007)

As the name suggests, this one too talks about the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 and tells the story of 6 prisoners of war and how they escape the Pakistan army. It also shows the internal unrest in Pakistan when the East side wants to separate itself from the West.

LOC Kargil (2003)

Based on the 1999 Operation Vijay, the film takes you into the lives of the soldiers fighting the war against Pakistani intruders who tried to strategically occupy the Kargil Sector. This is also the longest running film ever made with a runtime of 255 minutes.

Raazi (2018)

This one takes you away from the war front and into the life of a spy. Sehmat, marries into a Pakistani home to spy for her nation. The sacrifice and love for her country makes Sehmat an unsung hero.

Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019) This is a fictional dramatisation of true events of the retaliation of 2016 Uri attack. This was a surgical strike by our army against four terrorists near who conducted grenade attacks near the town of Uri in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002) Bhagat Singh is one of our Indian Freedom Fighters who will forever be remembered for his undying will to make India free of the British Raj. This film takes you through his journey as a freedom fighter and narrated the brave acts he committed before he was sentenced to death. He refused to bow down to the British and thus became a legend for the generations after him.

Kesari (2019)

This follows the story of the battle of Saragarhi that was fought between just 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikhs of the British Army and 10,000 Afridi and Orakzai Padhtun tribesmen in 1897. It’s one of the most astounding stories of bravery.

Neerja (2016)

Another movie that is away from the war but stirs up the patriot in you. Neerja Bhanot was a Indian head purser on the Pan Am Flight 73 that was hijacked in 1986. Apart from active negotiations, she saved many lives and lost her own in the struggle to keep all passengers safe. She was posthumously award the Ashoka Chakra Award.

Shershaah (2021)

The story of Captain Vikram Batra, a young braveheart who was responsible for India’s victory during the 1999 Operation Vijay. This film also tells you the story of an unsung hero, Dimple Cheema, Batra’s fiancé who spent her life like a widow after he was martyred in war.
