Big 1st half leads No. 6 Gonzaga past Portland State, 102-78
PORTLAND, Ore. — Malachi Smith led six players in double figures with a season-high 23 points and No. 6 Gonzaga used a big first half to beat Portland State 102-78 on Thursday night in the opening round of the Phil Knight Legacy tournament. The Bulldogs (4-1) led by 27 in the first half, held a 55-31 advantage at halftime and withstood a sloppy second half. Gonzaga coach Mark Few said he had his…

My Garroth Ro’Meave Headcannons (MCD)
Gar Gar being an icon <3 he’ll be iconic in my rewrite
• Garroth was clean shaven and his frame was more lean when he was younger in O’Khasis. Garroth’s appearance was held highly as the next royal heir to the throne. But after being Phoenix Drop, he has facial hair and his hair is longer, more curly. His body his more buff. (So Viking, so slay)
• Garroth doesn’t wear his O’Khasis armor, instead as his body changes with age and training, he just keeps the cross on, his picks apart his old armor and has it connected with new armor pieces by a black smith. While he hates his homeland, he doesn’t at the same time.
• Garroth has always been reserved when it comes to speaking or his body language, he does the minimal. This was taught to him in O’Khasis so he looked professional, well-rounded and so he would be taken seriously as a king. Garroth still has this demeanor in Phoenix Drop, but it’s not from pretentious standpoint. He just is much more calm and reserved then his guard counterparts
• While Garroth is good with kids and is very kind, he gets anxious around them. Being with Levin and Malachi makes him scared that he’ll be like his father. Garroth holds lots of guilt about parenting because of how his father treated him and his siblings. So while he may appear calm, Garroth is quite stressed.
• While Garroth is stressed when it comes to parenting, he feels obligated to be a figure of guidance for the youth. He gets heavily attached to people he deems as needing support, in general.
• as a future ruler, he was taught to keep his emotions hidden and buried. So, he still does. You’d have better luck finding ten unicorns then Garroth opening up about anything femoral vulnerable surrounding him
• Garroth’s fighting style is very formal, while he does have the skills a jury member would want to have, Garroths fighting style is unique because it’s how a royal would fight. His swordsmanship was crafted by the best trainers in the royal world, his style is quite eloquent and less harmful toward him since you wouldn’t want a king to die in battle. While he is a selfless individual, his fighting techniques are selfish.
• Garroth loves horses, and Phoenix Drop has very mediocre ones. But that doesn’t matter, Garroth will love them all the same.

Notes :
all links lead to the goodreads page of the book, mostly because i like to look at book cover art ;
list features authors/books that i love (T. Kingfisher, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Ursula K. Le Guin, the collections from the British Library Tales of the Weird, etc.), but also a few that i don't like and some that i have not yet read ;
if upon seeing that list the first novel you check out is by Stephen King's you have not understood the assignment ;
not all of those are strictly horror stories, some are 100% science fiction (Brian W. Aldiss' Hothouse for instance).

Aholiday party hosted by local Michigan politicians turned into a pro-Palestinian protest that reportedly led to a violent shoving match resulting in one Democratic activist being hospitalized.
The incident occurred December 16 during a private holiday party hosted by the 13th Congressional District Democratic Party at the Common Pub in Detroit. Things quickly became raucous when about 20 to 30 pro-Palestinian protesters, part of the Palestinian Youth Movement and Party for Socialism and Liberation, entered the bar and confronted Representative Shri Thanedar over his support for Israel.
The metropolitan Detroit area has become a hotbed since Hamas launched a surprise attack in Israel on October 7, leading to protests and tension-filled situations between local Jews and Palestinians.
Thomas Becker, a spokesperson for Thanedar, told Newsweek via email that some 200 people were in attendance. No security was present, and the only people there before the situation escalated were party goers and venue staff. He had no further comment.
Wayne County Commissioner Jonathan Kinloch, who represents District 2, posted a 45-second video clip from the event on X, formerly Twitter. Pushing, shoving and yelling can be seen and heard in the footage, all taking place over gospel music in the background.
Kinloch said the pro-Palestinian supporters "caused chaos and mayhem," badly injuring local Black activist Bobbie Avington-Smith, a Democrat. She suffered two black eyes and was admitted to a local hospital for medical attention, according to Bridge Detroit.
Newsweek reached out to Kinloch via phone and email for comment.
Detroit Police Department spokesman Jordan Hall told Newsweek on Wednesday that the incident is still under investigation and that no arrests have been made.
"It was something we never expected," 91-year-old party attendee Bernice Smith told local ABC affiliate WXYZ.
One attendee told Deadline Detroit that protesters chanted, "Shri, you can't hide, we charge you with genocide," in reference to the thousands of Palestinian deaths in Gaza in relation to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
A video posted on Instagram by the account "detroit2palestine" shows former Detroit Police Commissioner Bernice Smith using her cane to defend herself against protesters.
Smith's son, Sterling Jackson, told Bridge Detroit's Malachi Barrett that he was the first person to jump into the fray because he feared for his mother's well-being.
"I started it because I couldn't believe they are doing this and nobody was doing anything," Jackson said.
On Monday, a joint press conference was held by Thanedar, Kinloch and other Democrats representing the 13th district who referred to the protesters as rioters.
"They didn't have a right to be there, first and foremost," Kinloch said, according to video from the press conference posted on X by Barrett. "It's not about whether or not they were being violent, whether or not they were being disruptive. They were not supposed to be there.
"The owner asked them to leave, I asked them to leave. They refused to leave so they were removed from a place where they had no business and no legal right to be in."
Kinloch added that there was no security because it was a holiday party aimed to be a celebration and nobody expected any protests or violence, adding that they put the safety and security of senior attendees at risk.
Any concerns about Thanedar's position on the war in Gaza could have been accomplished via other avenues, Kinloch added.
"This is not going to give you support for your cause," Thanedar said on Monday. "I welcome them to come to my office. I welcome them to invite me to town halls where I could come and we can have a dialogue."
Wayne State University, located near the pub, and Detroit police responded to the scene.
Last year, the city of Dearborn drew national attention when its residents elected Abdullah Hammoud as its first Muslim and Arab American mayor. Hammoud has been outspoken in support of the Palestinian cause the past two months, leading a city of about 110,000 residents composed more than half of citizens of Middle Eastern or North African (MENA) ancestry and mostly Arab.
Michigan, one of a handful of states expected to decide the 2024 presidential election, is home to about 90,000 Jewish residents and more than 300,000 residents of Middle Eastern descent.
A recent Newsweek poll of eligible Michigan voters found that about 46 percent of respondents disapprove of President Joe Biden's handling of the conflict.
In contrast, while Republican front-runner Donald Trump has led Biden in recent polls in Michigan, a statewide poll conducted in November found that Trump's various legal battles could determine his fate in next year's election should he be the GOP nominee.
Newsweek reached out to the Michigan Democratic Party via email for comment.

The Book of Life Read Along Ch28-30
‘If you can name every sister, brother, niece, nephew, and child of mine you killed in New Orleans all those years ago – as well as any other vampires you killed in the city along the way – I will throw myself in with the rest.’
‘Malachi Smith. Crispin Jones. Suzette Boudrot. Claude Le Breton.’
Matthew paused as Ransome searched the ledger’s entries for the names. ‘You should have kept them in chronological order instead of alphabetical. That’s how I remember them.’
...Matthew continued to recite names long after the downstairs bar opened for business...
‘I believe that settles matters, Ransome.’...
Ransome looked dazed. ‘How can you possibly remember all of them?’
‘How could I ever forget?’
The Book of Life Chapter 29, All Souls Trilogy, Deborah Harkness
A heart-wrenching scene beautifully acted by Matthew Goode as MdC expurges ghosts of the past. You can see the guilt and pain about what he has done deep in his eyes and etched on his face.

It Katey IS pregnant, and her due date is BEFORE Joy’s, what would that mean for her PP? Their ESOQ?
[ Follow–Up to This Post ]
Tumblr media
If Katey is Pregnant w/ #29…
If Jed + Katey are, in fact, expecting the elusive 29th GrandDuggar, they’re way early, and they'll be setting a truly incredible pace. Also, their Pregnancy Announcement is really late, based on the timing of their 1st Pregnancy Reveal—but not yet late, based on family data.
Joy (Duggar) Forsyth is currently pregnant with GrandDuggar #30. She’s due on May 23, 2023. If Jed + Katey are expecting #29, then Katey's Due Date must be before Joy's. (We can be fairly certain of this. Katey had True on his Due Date, while Gideon and Evy arrived just 1 Day Late and 2 Days Late, respectively. So, there's no reason for us to think Jim Bob might be thinking, like: "Yes, Katey is due a day or two after Joy, but Joy is always really late, so Katey probably will deliver first.") She'd be due on May 22, 2023, at the latest.
Using May 22, 2023 as Katey’s Due Date, the Predictor thinks she'll once again give birth on that Due Date. Currently, Duggar–Nakatsu #2 isn't expected until August 22, 2024. Doing the math... Katey + Jed would be 458 Days (15 Months) and 2.56 SDs Early, if Katey is due on May 22nd. That's in the 92nd Percentile. And that's if she's due on May 22nd; if she's due earlier, it'd be even faster!
Just to hammer this home... That'd be a short spacing. Like, short. Really short. Counting from May 2, 2022 (Truett's DOB) to May 22, 2023, it's just 385 Days (1 Year, 3 Weeks). Even among the top, top producing Predictor Couples, that is extremely fast. Going off Non–Firstborn, Non–Post–Loss Child Spacings, with adjustment for any unexpected, unlikely to recur prematurity (e.g., Josie D.), Truett–to–Baby #2 would be beaten only by 11 Child Spacings. And, that's out of 500(!) Spacings, across my entire spreadsheet. Here's the list—
331 Days Timothy David Rodrigues [Jill's 2nd]
342 Days Audrey Kress Morton [Alyssa (Campana)'s 3rd]
345 Days Grace Ann ("Gracie") Wikstrom [Kristi's 3rd]
348 Days Renee Crystine Rodrigues [Jill's 4th]
359 Days Ronald Michael Smith [Katie (Morton)'s 2nd]
361 Days Coralee Jean Rogers [Courtney's 10th]
364 Days Toby Malachi Mueller [Mary Jane (Stoll)'s 6th]
366 Days Etbauer–Wikstrom #2 (Approx.) [Gracie's 2nd]
367 Days Callie Ann Rogers [Courtney's 4th]
375 Days Colt and Case Rogers [Courtney's Twins]
382 Days Michael Dean Tull [Kaleigh (Holt)'s 2nd]
Clearly, it's not unprecedented—but, it would be impressive!
If Katey was due on May 22, 2023, her prior data indicates that she and Jed would've announced on September 25, 2022. As of today, November 4, 2022, their Baby News would be 40 Days Late. (And, they announced True at Day 41—so, they're already 98% Later than last time.) If we were to use the Overall Duggar data, however, they wouldn't actually be late to announce, at all. They'd be expected to announce at 94 Days Among, on November 17, 2022.
If Duggar–Nakatsu arrives on May 22, 2023, 385 Days after Truett, Jed + Katey's Baseline Procreative Pace (PP) would be 385 Days, which trails just 1 Couple—Gracie (Wikstrom) + Kord Etbauer (366 Days). Their Age–Adjusted Procreative Pace (AAPP), from <25 to >40, would be just 385–508 Days (12.6–16.7 Months). And finally, their ESOQ would be 14 Children, which is 6 Children / 75% More than the Predictor currently thinks they'll have. That's a lot!
Duggar Data thinks Duggar–Nakatsu #2 is probably GrandDuggar #31 or #32, or something. Not #29. But, we'll see! If it is #29, it's unexpected, although not unprecedented, and Jed + Katey will be the Duggar Couple to watch re: Procreative Pace.

...I literally have zero explanation for this concept design beyond new Doctor Who trailer equals me remembering my companions au where I imagine my various OCs travelling with the doctor, and remembering Malachi in the AU and imagining him appearing in the 60th specials as well and result is this concept design for him in the specials.
"...Doctor?"
Having travelled with the Doctor ever since an adventure with the time lord and Rose, Malachi spent a-lot of his teenage years running and running with the Doctor, Rose, Martha and Donna from various threats as they saved the day, and while he enjoyed a-lot of it (though some of it such as dealing with the Master he would not recommend) and saw the Doctor, Rose, Martha and Donna as family, Malachi at sixteen, would ultimately leave the Doctor after stopping the Dalek's attempt to destroy reality, taking up Sarah Jane's offer to come find her and as a result, would become Malachi Smith. And sure, even if he did still have to deal with aliens with Sarah, Luke, Rani, Clyde and eventually Sky, he at least had a normalish life finally, and as an adult, would go into Art.
But while Malachi had believed he'd seen his Doctor's face for the last time when the Doctor saved Luke from being hit by a car, a familiar face shows up again when while Malachi is looking into alien activity, and he soon finds himself on another adventure with the Doctor and Donna once more as they face an immortal who may just outdo the Trickster in Malachi's list of worst enemies to face.

tell me about atlas sew and his friend group 👹👹
I've had this story and these characters for 10+ years, the amount of inter-connectivity between everything is so hard to explain. If anything sounds unbalanced, feel free to ask about it because theres usually a reason that nerfs it.
That being said Atlas'(he/they) Mom was my first OC, she's basically my world's equivalent of a Dnd Champion she worships the deity of loyalty. She spends a lot of her story picking up strays and doing the whole found family thing (she later loops his father into this behavior as well) so his family is massive. And both his parents own the adventurers' guild so everyone he grew up around is like battle hardened and kinda reckless. As a result he has a weird "Nothing can hurt me, do you even know who I am?" and "I am intimately aware of how much effort and hurt it takes to succeed, with everything I do I will give back to my community as thanks for all the privilege I have" complex about him. He's also weirdly codependent in that he's never really alone so when he is he just kinda has no idea what to do. He's very much the "I know a guy" guy.
The Sew thing is actually because neither of his parents remember the names they were born with cuz they had to keep switching them. However his mother was known for fixing uniforms when she was in the army and making clothes n stuff for other revolutionaries n whatnot. So the name is kinda like John Smith in that the family name is just her occupation.
Atlas is actually inspired by Taliesin Jaffe because I watched his episode of between the sheets and was like yeah thats him. Specifically he has that like old soul kinda vibe you get when you're raised around people much older than you and have been to more funerals than you have marriages. He's not goth weird like taliesin but he's "I know too much and lack experience in all things" weird. He's also a history major which I imagine contributes to that. Atlas has grown up around people who have lived it and he wants to better understand them and their experiences.
He also has some disparity in being raised semi-noble because of his parent's strange governmental relations and also being babysat by adventurer's all the time. I imagine he kinda shifts rapidly between super well mannered and proper to being an absolute rascal.
Currently him and his gang are studying at a prestigious university I can't be bothered to name. He meets Aragon before joining the uni at a fancy party (both their parents are loaded [Aragon's through business and prolly blood money, Atlas's because the government wants them to stay in one place so they don't have to deal with the hassle of having slightly overpowered warriors on the loose])
Malachi and Oz are working under their mentors for a government sponsored project to make permanent portals through the planes. Atlas' family gets brought in because of the adventure guild thing and some of the failed portals keep spawning in monsters. So he meets those two through that.
Idk what Aragon's family does yet but Oz hears that Atlas knows Aragon and basically says that bros family uses stuff from diff planes to make their stuff so Atlas should totally get him to fund the project as well. So thats how Aragon gets introduced to the rest of the gang.
Aragon (he/she genderfluid) is a fire elemental and the way that works in my world is that elementals are born as null but when they hit puberty they gain their element based on who they are like personality wise.
She's super standoffish and snappy. She's very much the painful aspect of fire when you first meet her. But as you get to know her I think she mellows out into barely a burning ember of a person. As the story continues I want him to become more of a hearth kinda fire personality wise.
Her entire thing is that her parents want him to go into business and support the family but he super doesn't want to do that. Except he doesn't know who she is as a person because his whole life has been defined by being what his family wants that he doesn't know what else to do.
He has super bad family relations and like 2 friends outside of the gang and they're the butler and the chef so she isn't doing great. So like when he's thrown into a group of people who know exactly who they are and are doing what they want its kinda moth to the flame. Being around them hurts because imposter syndrome and jealousy but also it's visible proof that theres a chance at a happier future for him.
Growing up I imagine he spent a lot of time hiding in the kitchen. The chef would listen to him complain and give him snacks n stuff. Eventually he started teaching Aragon to cook. Later down the line I want him to have his own little restaurant but he is Not There yet.
His character is me processing what it means to learn how to trust. She's very much that one character that is not down to found family but boy howdy are the others trying (They succeed). Atlas brought Aragon home one day and his parents decided "yeah that's my kid" after hearing about her negligent home life. A lot of their relationship is Atlas convincing Aragon to be a Sew (most of their family is adopted through similar means) while Aragon struggles with still wanting to prove himself to his parents.
Malachi (he/him nonbinary) and Oz (she/her) are still in development.
Malachi is like a magic physicist, his mentor is working with the guy in charge of making the spell (enchantment???) for the portal to take em from plane a to plane b. So him and his mentor are studying the relationship between those spaces to make sure no one like dies and things stop coming through without permission.
Oz and her mentor make the rovers and what not that they send through the temporary portals in order to get more info on how to set up a temporary one.
They bond over the project and school.
The way I make characters is I basically come up with a role they fill, a vague concept, and like 4 personality traits + sometimes a design. Then they stay as like vague husks of people till I find 2-3 characters or people that make me go "This is so character A" and I copy and paste things to give them actual depth. Once the mishmash is complete the brainworms start forming connections between them, the world, and other characters already in existence.
As of rn Oz and malachi only have one inspo each so I'm a lil lost on them. I wanna develop them a bit better this year tho
There also isn't any plot for this
