First Impression: Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!
When Kazuhiko witnesses his beautiful classmate Anna getting dumped by her childhood friend, and then when she looks up to discover that not only has he seen the break-up but something even more embarrassing in the aftermath, a unique relationship begins. And one that’s not much to Kazuhiko’s benefit, as he sees it. He would rather stay friendless (much to his little sister’s chagrin), read manga, and time his every interaction so he doesn’t run into any type of problems. But Anna herself is kind of a walking problem. Cute but surprisingly upfront and energetic, she starts to use Kazuhiko as a complaint board. Well, he can deal with that (at least until she pays him back in full for the meal he bought her), but can he deal with the swirling relationship issues and school life situations building around him that might lead to more than just one “losing heroine” in his orbit?
My most anticipated show of the season finally here 😩 Let the gooners keep roshidere. Best romcom is here.
I’m so moved man, I had to pause the episode constantly to just appreciate how amazing this looks. Almost 86 like quality to a romcom?? Matter of fact I’m sure some of the 86 staff had to have worked on this. Just blew my mind how good this looks, the animation, the backgrounds, the character designs, whew 😋
I love Anna already! She and the MC’s chemistry is so good! Lot of fast paced and quick witted humour, and I like the themes of youth heartbreak. When this first got announced it seemed like it was gonna be a harem from the title, but I’m guessing the no losing heroines bit comes from the MC helping all these girls out with their crushes who are already taken, or at least emotionally taken?
I can’t wait for more! That scene of Nukimizu going up to the roof and he sees Anna and the wind starts blowing reminded me of the scene from 86 OP 2 with Shin seeing Lena in the field of flowers.. just beautifully done. Interesting characters with a diverse set of personalities, funny, not relying on fanservice, great seiyuus.. I’m hooked
As an LN enthusiast I love the basket haul scene in the ED of him just buying 20-30 LNs at a time, so relatable lol.
This season is amazing for romance, arguably best ever AND we haven’t even got Kimi ni todoke season 3 yet 😭 we are up so much
This week, emotions run high with vampire tragedies, theater kids at each other's throats, and shot-down love confessions.
The Weekly Orbit is a weekly column collecting and refining my more casual anime- and manga-related thoughts from the previous week. Mostly, these are taken from my tumblr blog, and assume familiarity with the works covered. Be wary of spoilers!
Hello, anime fans! I don’t have much to say this week, so I won’t belabor the point. Let’s get into things.

The summer 2024 has been on fire—at least when it comes to the music. While it lacks the big splashes of last season, like YUNGBLUD’s “Abyss,” summer 2024 has provided great openings one after another from series like The Elusive Samurai, Roshidere, and Oshi no Ko. I don’t envy our man Ryan in selecting and cutting just five (plus one honorable mention) from the season, but here they are!
We hope you enjoy our selections! Please follow us and share our video on Instagram, Tiktok, Mastodon, and X (Twitter)!
Here are the OPs we selected:
“Sweet Memory” by Eve, SHOSHIMIN: How to Become Ordinary
“Plan A” by DISH//, The Elusive Samurai
“Tsuyogaru Girl” by BotchiBoromaru feat. Mossa (Necry Talkie), Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!
“Fatal” by GEMN (Kento Nakajima & Tatsuya Kitani), Oshi no Ko Season 2
“1-Ban Kagayaku Hoshi” by Sumire Uesaka, Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian
Honorable Mention: “Homunculus” by Vaundy, My Hero Academia: You’re Next
Seasonal First Impressions: Out of Luck, Out of Love in MAKEINE: TOO MANY LOSING HEROINES!
Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! isn't reinventing the wheel with its take on romance anime. Instead, the extremely promising premiere sets itself apart with wit, charm, and passion.
Seasonal First Impressions is a column where I detail my thoughts, however brief or long, about a currently-airing anime’s first episode or so.
Like so many of this season’s premieres—the good, the bad, and the strange—the real meat of Makeine‘s first episode is in its closing few minutes. Unlike with some of those shows, though, we’re going to start from the beginning. Makeine: Too Many Losing…
