Important Update for those who’ve followed TTM (+the Main Story arc):

Hello Helloooo everyone~! A long long time since I’ve updated much to this blog as a whole (big apologies to that in advance btw- .w.;; ), but I’ve been meaning to make this update regarding those who’ve followed the previous “Main Story Arc” chapters, up to the latest chapter 12.

So, to tell y’all the truth… as much as I’ve been wanting to get back to that main story, and to follow up on those previously-mentioned plot twists… ehh, with how much I’ve been adjusting and tweaking to the cast over the past few months (mainly over on Discord), playing around with certain character dynamics, and just generally thinking back to my very first ideas for the TTM-verse (compared to my current ideas)… it didn’t leave me too invested after awhile to wanna touch the main story as much? .x.; But on the other hand, I didn’t wanna leave this verse just purely a concept instead of it’s own tale to tell overtime…

…And so, after some deliberation over on Discord, I’ve decided to make the decision in revamping the main story arc, all the way fresh from scratch!~🙏✨Prym & co. would still remain as the focus ofc, though while some plot elements from the original arc will stay around (won’t mention which ones yet though~), the rest of the story will follow a whole new path for me to take the main girls on that I hope you all will enjoy reading about~ ☺️✨

I know you were ready to lay CHET to rest after this season but… Callum still has the cube, we still don’t know *exactly* what it does but Aaravos will presumedly need it, and all that foreshadowing about Callum choosing Rayla over the greater good? I still believe

i'll have a more coherent post about this when i'm not running on under 7 hours of sleep for 24+ hours (close to 30+ now honestly) but no i feel so Fucking Crazy right now precisely because i went into s6, our penultimate season, expecting to finally get to lay CHET and its variants (5x08 my beloved) to rest after 4+ years, every season for 3 seasons in a row i've been ready to lay it down, and yet it's still on the Goddamn Table arguably more than ever before

Obviously certain things have changed — Callum's thematic associations with freedom would switch probably to having a role to play in 'unlocking' Aaravos' full power and/or giving him access to the other Startouch elves somehow — but both of those things are stuff I've considered being related to the cube before (as well as dark magic) so not much is actually changing there fundamentally.

What continues to change is the sheer assortment of evidence that Callum is going to play into Aaravos' hands for her (the initial basis of CHET), and Rayla is likewise going to refuse to sacrifice him (thereby shortly followed by mutual salvation theory), and 6x03 is a Giant Sign blinking Pay Attention in bright neon.

Rayla: Listen to me. If you ever have to choose between me and the greater good, do the right thing. Make the sacrifice.

Nevermind that 'right thing' is subjective and that sacrificing loved ones is routinely seen as Bad ("We must be willing to sacrifice, even the things we love" / "My daughter [...] and I tried to kill you") and that Aaravos (one of Rayla's primary foils) likewise demanded for Viren to 'make a sacrifice' regarding Sir Sparklepuff in 5x09. It'd be one thing, mind you, for Rayla to just bring up this Hypothetical and it could conceivably be dropped, but then Callum makes the basis of CHET's adjacent Mutual Salvation Theory explicit in tethering Rayla's request to his own:

Rayla: What? Callum: If Aaravos ever controls me again, if he ever uses me, promise me you'll kill me. Rayla: Yes. I promise.

(There's a few different things we can read both into Callum's renewed approach and Rayla's changed response, but meta for another day).

What this conversation does, though, is link these things in the audience's mind. If half is called upon their deal in a scenario, it's only logical that the other will be too. And, of course, Aaravos has to inevitably possess Callum, and Callum (as a main protagonist and usher of a new age of magic) cannot die, so Rayla has to break her promise (a la TTM) to keep him alive, freeing up room in the narrative to Callum likewise break his (more thinly made tbh) promise as well. The easiest order of events, therefore, is for Callum to break his promise first in order to save/protect her, be possessed, and then Rayla breaks her promise in saving him. Mutual salvation and all that

The fact we have other characters and plot threads routinely referring back to and building up Rayllum's thematic basis for each plot turn in S7 is just the cherry on top.

(We also see Rayla talk not just one but two 'monsters' down corrupted by desperation and grief, so while it may retread more territory if she does the same to Callum, there's certainly more than a precedent. For Callum, 2/3 dark magic times were for Rayla, and you don't introduce Big Extra Scary 'permanently ruined by dark magic' Stakes if you're not gonna use them as a way to escalate things, either, even if of course given that it's S7, there will be ways out and a happy ending).

I think it's likely the cube is still involved somehow (all the ominous foreshadowing including and most prevalently featured in the pawn intro doesn't suddenly go away, and was only added to in S6) and really, this is about the only parallel I personally need anymore to keep chugging along theory wise:

When when Rayla does apologize, people will complain that it’s disingenuous or “too little too late”

I foresee a number of complaints

Too little, too late (like you say) She should have apologised immediately even though Callum didn’t want to talk and she respected that.

Not apologising for the “right” thing or in the right way. People have had years to imagine the “perfect” apology and I can guarantee there’s going to be a number of them bemoaning the fact it didn’t go like they felt it should have and therefore is “bad”.

If Callum acknowledges the part he played in the events of TTM then that’s Rayla deflecting responsibility and making him the real bad guy.

If Callum cuts her off from a self deprecating spiral then he’s excusing her actions and not making her “pay”, even though Callum repeatedly shows grace and forgiveness with Rayla. He has a quick and sometimes mean temper (though not to much in arc 2, showing how he has matured) but he’s never kicked her when she’s down. No-one is harder on Rayla than Rayla herself, something Callum has obviously realised since early on.

But ultimately, I think a lot the flack Rayla gets post-TTM is not playing her part in the narrative. Callum is the main character, right? He’s supposed to get the cool girlfriend who then becomes his cheerleader and has no narrative seperate from backing him up. She can’t be stronger or faster than him. She can’t have thoughts and desires seperate from his and she certainly can’t pursue them.

Hell, she can’t even be taller than him without people losing their shit about it.

So, no, I don’t think any apology will change her detractors opinion of her. Which, well, that’s their prerogative. A certain group of people really don’t seem to get they’re not watching the show they think they’re watching and this is merely another aspect of that.

"Rayla is the only one who can reach Claudia" Some months ago I read an analysis that said so, and while back then I thought it could be, it wasn't my first option, but after S6 I think Rayla being the one to help Claudia redeem herself and leave Aaravos' side is the most plausible thing.

(Lots of text ahead, I'm sorry)

For starters, they both share trauma; their parents abandoned them. But, their reactions to the trauma were complete opposites:

Rayla -> She abandons the people she loves before they can do it (Even if she doesn't do it consciously, e.g. Her leaving at the end of TTM)

Claudia -> She sticks to the people she loves and doesn't let them go even when it could be for the better. E.g. Bringing back Viren. (Tho for a moment she left Terry, she came back eventually)

They share that trauma and can bond through it because they can understand each other at a level no other character can.

Yes, Callum and Ezran also lost their parents and they used to be friends with Claudia. Yes, Soren also lost his parents. Yes, Terry is there for her, he loves her and she loves him.

So why can't any of them help her see things clearly?

Soren -> Because he's the one of the people who abandoned her in the first place. He's one of the causes of her trauma. He also has tried to reach her but couldn't do it (First in S3 when he asks her to go with him and Claudia refuses and then in S4).

Terry -> Same as Soren, he may have not abandoned her (yet, I have the theory he'll join the dragang in S7 because he thinks is the only way to save Claudia atp), but at the end of S6 he tried to make her chose a different path and it didn't go well, she still chose to free Aaravos.

Ezran -> They've had a heart-heart talk before in S2, and then Claudia fought against him (and Callum and Rayla) in S5. Ezran may be able to give her another chance if she explains herself and wants to be redeemed. He also lost his parents, but as he thinks in the novelization of book 2, not because they chose to leave, they were killed, there's a world of difference.

Callum -> Same with Ezran, he also lost all his parents, but it's still different, and this is the more clear representation of what it is to lose a parent because of an outside cause like murder, and losing a parent because they chose to leave. In TTM that was one of his main arguments with Rayla. She tells him he doesn't understand anything, he doesn't understand her and why she's so stuck in what happened to her parents (including Runaan), because she didn't know what happened to them, the only thing she knew was that they left and never came back. And Callum does know what happened, they were killed. He has closure, Rayla and Claudia do not. In addition, Callum can't get to Claudia, is because she also has manipulated his feelings and betrayed him and Ezran. She's also collaborating with the person Callum is more afraid of.

All of these people have met Claudia and may have conflicted feelings about her. Rayla may be able to see her situation from an outside perspective and still empathize with her because she has gone through it too.

As I said before, Claudia doesn't have closure, she returned to Katolis looking for Viren and looking for that closure, but finding him death only altered the wound his leaving made. In this same episode (609), Rayla gets the closure she needs to let her biological parents go. Now that Rayla has that she can help Claudia get that too.

I think this scene of Rayla making Claudia understand she's wrong, can parallel the scene with Esmeray in 605, where Rayla understands it and calms it down, she achieves that since she's able to emphasize with Esmeray, they both lost people they cared about, but Rayla makes it remember that even when their are gone their love persevere. With Claudia, the writers could use the same formula.

Conclusion:

Rayla is the one who can make Claudia realize that what she's doing isn't out of love, not anymore, is out of revenge. Rayla knows it and understands it because she confused love with revenge too, and she admits it in S4 ("We had something so special, but I became so obsessed with revenge that I risk losing the best thing I ever had...")

Rayla understands more than anything what it is like to lose a parent because they chose to leave. She understands what it is to live with the doubt of why your own parents couldn't stay, why weren't you important enough for them to stay. She understands it, she understands Claudia, in a way no other character can.

Thoughts from Dreamer's Nightmare

Each of Wonderstorm's graphic novels has given us extra content outside the scope of the show, and each has teased us with hints and foreshadowing that fall in line with the greater themes of the multimedia story they're presenting.

Through the Moon gave us a greater understanding of the purpose of the Moon Nexus, which the new trailer has shown will be expanded upon in S7. We got to see the mechanics of rescue and resurrection through Phoe-Phoe's rebirth and Rayla's visit to the world beyond life and death, which foreshadowed Runaan's return in S6.

It also gave Rayla and Callum a reason to hold love and pain in their hearts at the same time, so their struggle to come back together after separation, in S4 and beyond, would mirror the greater struggle of the humans and elves all across Xadia as they try to find ways to stop fighting their endless war and achieve peace and love with one another.

Bloodmoon Huntress gave us a new villain, Kim'dael, who appeared in the show in S5, and set up what feels like a rematch between her and the moonfam. It also gave us Runaan and Rayla's bonding origin story, allowing greater understanding of her heartfelt focus on rescuing him.

We also got the tiniest peek at Keeper L-------'s existence. When Rayla sees him in S7, his lore will expand.

And then there's Runaan and Ethari's relationship, which was expanded a lot in the graphic novel. Whatever we get in S7, we already know that they're an effective battle couple, each with their own strengths, and that they're devoted to each other and work well as a team.

Puzzle House did so much heavy lifting with its foreshadowing, I'm in awe. The unicorns were a fun throughline that no one suspected would lead us to Leola, but it has. The meta moment when we've left the cute childlike area behind and now we're in the dark scary part is delightfully self-aware and holds such importance for the constant growth and maturing themes in the show. The hint that the greater multimedia story of Xadia itself is like a puzzle to be solved is subtle, but accurate. We can find valuable secrets hidden inside if we take the time to think and analyze properly.

Claudia's ability to read Viren's map foreshadows options in S7, and the concept of a pure heart, first touched on with Amaya in S3, is expanded upon here as a real phenomenon that has real in-universe effects, so when we came back to it in S6 with Soren - with comments from Corvus and from Viren - we are left with a much expanded understanding of what that means for him.

So, what does Dreamer's Nightmare have to offer us? Let's take a look. (This is just a high-altitude pass, looking for peaks rising from the fog. I'm not going to delve into every aspect of the book in this post.) The things that stand out to me at similar heights to the other points I've mentioned for the other graphic novels are these:

Callum and Ezran's relationship is fraught during much of this story, even though they do love each other. It's reminiscent of TTM's approach to Rayla and Callum struggling to find common ground despite their fathers' conflict, and I think that's where it's pointing again, too. With Runaan returned, Ezran and Callum will find themselves on opposite sides, despite their love for each other. And they'll have to try to work through that if they want to reach an understanding. Callum and Rayla didn't get there in TTM - it took them much longer, so we might not get a complete and tidy result just from S7.

The dream warden holds the rest of the big themes I see as foreshadowing. They circle around time and identity.

The warden itself was young when it made a friend, and then it lost them. Connection and loss are constant themes in TDP, from all the parents our main five kids have lost, to the choices they make that take them away from each other, to the ways they choose to seek each other out again. The warden lost its connection to the little one it loved, and over time it grew angry, hurtful. This feels like a parallel to Aaravos and his loss of Leola, and the darkening of the star on his chest. Its plan to attack the adults for leaving their dreams behind is similar to Aaravos' grand scheme in some ways.

The other aspect of the dream warden I feel is themey is the time gap and loss of identity it suffers once it's calmed. It returns, and for a moment it is still very alone and uncertain. More than one show character has stood in such a position, and yet more may stand here soon. Rayla stood here when she finally sought Callum out after two years. Runaan is standing here now, between S6 and S7, uncertain where the battle lines have shifted to in his absence, and who is on his side. Aaravos may stand here if he stops causing chaos and truly looks at the people he's been harming. The warden's storm can represent a host of too-big, negative emotions, and plenty of characters carry such a storm inside them.

The hopeful side of the identity moment is that the warden takes on parts of the identity of those supporting it. Little bits of the other creatures live on in it. It is already not as alone as it may feel. It already has support, even before it begins to reach out in dreams for new friends. It's choosing to emulate those who helped, and that will help the warden become a helper itself, once more. A new cycle is beginning, and it can spread to anyone receptive to it, anyone who takes something good and makes it their own and carries it forward to touch other lives. Runaan was not always an assassin. Aaravos was not always a manipulator. Claudia was not always a killer. If you live, you can still learn.

Aww yeah, I think I remember that!

Hmmm, from what I can recall (or, perhaps tweak a bit to my current ideas), Prym would have a crescent moon-shaped tattoo above her navel, with a pair of stars on either side (representing her parents).

Tula has a sun motif tattoo on her shoulder blades/upper-back, representing the light of hope she wishes to carry as the "brawn" of the group, whilst providing the best protection possible when times get tough. The sun itself also lowkey resembles a sunflower, which was the flower her mother Milana always adored.

And as for Aevri, she'd have a star-shaped tattoo on her upper arm/shoulder, with three little fish underneath to represent her parents and older sister Elody.

She just…needs him.

Callum.

Just…Callum.

Rayla sighs his name aloud too, her breath quickening again and her heart pounding in her ears. Just kissing him, just holding him…it’s escape, sure, but it’s not enough.

She needs him closer—under her hands, on her body—so she can show herself—

He’s safe. He’s here.

She pulls at his scarf the next time they breathe, unwinding it from his neck, then taking his hands and setting them on her hips. She closes his fingers around her belt and starts the both of them over towards his bed, aching all over for him—

“Oh, uh—” he hesitates…but stumbles backwards easily at her bidding. “—okay.”

“Hold on, dummy. We’ll get the bed wet,” she realizes with a breathy laugh, catching him by his lapels before he can crash into the mattress…then leaving her thumbs there beneath the edges of his jacket. She knows his skin is hot and soft and solid under there, and she needs to touch him—really touch him. 

It’s far from the first time she’s stripped it off of him, but— 

“Just, uh—” Callum envelopes her hands in his after his jacket hits the floor, hair she’d mussed sticking up every which way, flushed face tilted to the side…concern cutting through the heat. “This is…what you need?”

Rayla nods, lip between her teeth…and that’s enough—apparently—for Callum to give her her hands back. She’s shaking again, she realizes…and then instantly steady the second she’s touching him, the runes on his arms as hot as she’d known they’d be under her fingers.

“I need you, Callum,” she says, steady, but…not satisfied either.

He looks meaningfully down between them…and starts unbuckling her belt like she’d wanted him to—but slowly, his hands now shaking.

“And you want…”

She’s wanted this for weeks, and he’s known that. It’ll be…new tonight—going all the way, he’d called it a while ago—but…not new new. They know a little, at least, by now, about where to touch and how to please and what they like…and she’s more sure than ever. 

Nothing will be as satisfying. 

Nothing will keep everything else away.

She needs—

“This.”

Her belt falls to the floor…and Rayla moves closer, watching how his eyes brighten then warm, watching color creep up to his cheeks from his neck, watching his uncertain stalling turn to enthusiasm.

Callum whispers to her, smiling softly, voice shaking, touching her face again—

“I need you too, Rayla.”

—and crashes back against her.
