I mentioned I'm back on my Transformers bullshit, right? So I finally put up that other dollar store shelf I got and decided to populate it with some random transformers. And Pavel. And MailBirdramon. And Ryo-ohki. Okay, I guess the theme got a little lost along the way.

And, um, yeah, I'm too short to reach the shelf without a step ladder, and I had to hold my phone up awkwardly to take photos. Hopefully Oil Slick doesn't fall again and wipe the whole group out. Lol.

Aaaaaaand if you thought I could just post a picture without talking for a million years, oops lol. I just wanna reminisce a little!!

The Pavel is a custom (I think a Green Goblin I found at goodwill?) that I made in college and took everywhere with me. His legs have almost completely given out (a couple of the others' have too, lookin' at you, Starscream...), so he's sitting, but I remember taking him on walks around Tucson all the time. I have smaller versions of some of the other main characters of Uprising, and I really have to find the time to finish customizing them because I love those designs. ANyway.

Ryo-Ohki was from Blockbuster! I distinctly remember taking a Tenchi Muyo video out from our local Blockbuster in Chicago, uh, every time we went? And I remember getting a couple sets of little figures, but Ryo-Ohki was always my favorite, and I don't know where the others are. (Side note, we also got the best Clow book and cards I've ever seen from Blockbuster. I want one that's complete but the ones I see nowadays just... aren't as good or are really expensive...)

You can barely see Cyberverse Arcee next to her, but just wook at how widdle she is ooooh. I love little motorcycles, and Arcee's alt mode is just... tactile perfection. Actually, all the Cyberverse dolls are just the perfect size, the style of plastic used is so nice to the touch, and they're so little, aaaa

Um. So. I remember finding the Ultra Magnus at a goodwill we'd never been to before and being so excited. I think I also found a hilarious Yami Yugi mask on the same trip, and I probably should have just bought that as well. I should also go back to packing a Transformer in my purse when I go out; it's good for morale.

I can't say Oil Slick without laughing.

The Thundercracker is another one of my absolute, all-time faves. I think I got him at goodwill, and he's missing his left wing. Perceptor's covering it, but he's also holding a sign that says "Hi, Humans!" that appears to be made from a note my roommate left me? He used to live in my window in college, because my dorm was backed by an alley, and it was really fun seeing him in the window whenever I was on my way back to my room. I also found another TC at some point, but he's also missing his left wing and his legs, so this one doesn't have a replacement wing, poor guy.

I don't have as much to say about the other peeps on the shelf, but I also like them. ::nods::

Looking through my toys, it's wild how many I got at goodwill, seeing as I almost never find Transformers there now. Especially the Animated ones, which are aesthetically some of my faves. I also just really haven't been keeping up with the figures in general (as evidenced by the fact that I just learned that they made a Xaaron, my favorite boy ever and he's convention exclusive so I can't even get him even though I think there's third party sculpts but I haven't checked in years and and and), so I don't even know what's out there. I did hear there's a movie out, though.

Maybe I should get caught up with the comics/shows/movies instead of just rereading 15-year-old fanfiction?

Anyway, I just wanted to type a lot because my sister's really bored of my infodumping. kthanxbai~~~!

Digimon Xros Figures Greymon & MailBirdramon

We've got a big one for week three of MetalGreyMonth! The month where I talk about MetalGreymon for four weeks. Because oh happy day~

So if you've been around for long enough, you'll know that even though I've reviewed all of the Xros Heart Xros Figures, Greymon was my first, and I've been on the hunt for MailBirdramon for years. Managed to finally find one for [price I was willing to pay] out of Singapore of all places. It's my favorite Digimon of all time, and I'm very happy to have a toy of it.

The Good: Greymon is a decently posable figure, having ratcheted legs and shoulders, outward arms, and joints in the neck, jaw, and tail, while MailBirdramon has two in the neck, jaw, knees, and ball hips. They're ok figures on their own, but the draw is their combination.

The MetalGreymon combination is pretty solid, and doesn't detract from either of their posabilities. Also, it's just a great design, with MailBirdramon disappearing into the new form pretty seamlessly.

The Bad: It isn't perfect, though. The head plate sits well, but it doesn't actually plug in, so don't turn him upsidown. Greymon's horns also bump into MailBirdramon's hips. And the legs when not in Giga Destroyer Mode could have folded away better; it does kinda ruin the silhouette.

The Details: Like the other Xros Figures, I did add a few screen accurate details. Greymon was my first figure, so he probably has the least added details, with just the silver front horn, white teeth, and anime accurate eyes.

MailBirdramon, being the latest, has a lot more. I added panel lining to the feet, claws, mask, and around the eyes to give them a bit more pop. I added black to the inner chest hole, claw hole, tail gun, and around the wings to give them some depth, as well as some silver in the wings for accuracy. I also added silver to the cheeks for the same reason. Lastly, I added some red to the back half of the center claw for accuracy's sake.

Overall, even if they aren't perfect, I'm very happy to finally have MailBirdramon, and by extension MetalGreymon. I've got a Cyberdramon on the way, which means I'm only missing three releases from this line: Deckerdramon, Damemon, and The Big Guy. But wait? If this is week three, then what could possibly be week four?

And in another case of Xros Wars hilarity in hindsight; Sparrowmon, Shoutmon and Cutemon are depicted as Children while Greymon, Dorulumon, Ballistamon, Gatomon, Wizardmon and MailBirdramon are depicted as Adults. Guess what Levels these Digimon are in the Encyclopedia.

​It’s a pretty notable incident from the Xros Wars manga (which has a completely different plotline from the anime besides the origin premise). 

Wizarmon basically gives them disguise forms to let them go around the human world without being spotted as Digimon. (Not all of them are actually humans; as you can see, the Starmons are birds, Monimon a capybara, and Lunamon/Coronamon/Spadamon cats.) It’s just a fun thing briefly done for flavor, and the biggest plot-relevant part out of it is that Shoutmon ends up making use of this to ask a certain person in the human world about Taiki’s past without revealing the specifics of the Digimon incidents going on. That said, the Tailmon and Wizarmon ones have proven to be pretty popular in cosplay and fanart, especially since the two characters are a blatant reference to Adventure’s Tailmon and Wizarmon.

The two get along so well, they do everything for one another already and it's so clear on how they are towards each other. So when the idea of a marriage-like ceremony is brought up they really get confused for a moment.

Shoutmon is MORE than glad to officiate for his best friends, and these two just. Well. They might as well, even though they don't get why they need a ceremony but hey! Sounds like a fun enough time!

To be fair for as much crap as Frontier gets for purportedly "killing" the franchise, Digimon was in fact already on the decline because of Tamers by the time Frontier happened so Frontier was screwed right out the gate as @shihalyfie explained some time ago

As for Xros Wars’ popularity: Arguably the biggest success the series had at the time was, unsurprisingly, the toyline and specifically Digimon Xros Figure Series:

Consisting of eleven sets (Shoutmon and Starmons were packed together as were SkullKnightmon and DeadlyAxemon whereas Ballistamon, Dorulumon, Beelzemon, Sparrowmon, Greymon, MailBirdramon, Cyberdramon, Deckerdramon and Damemon/Tuwarmon were sold separately), these figures cold combine in various configurations and each figure/set had a DigiMemory card to use with the Xros Loader toy:

This is actually why DigiXros functions the way it does, becoming an expansion and exploration of Fusion as a concept

Since then DigiXros has been largely integrated into Fusion/DNA Digivolution as some Fusions before were very DigiXros like to begin with, a fact that carries into Fusion created since

Special mention goes to RagnaLordmon who possesses three consciousnesses, one consciousness being born from the Fusion of its components’ Digicores while also retaining the separate consciousnesses of its components, the Legend-Arms Durandamon and BryweLudramon:

I bring this up because it was not uncommon for DigiXros components to retain their individual consciousness and even speak though the most notable example of this was MetalGreymon since his tail was MailBirdramon

For context for why Shoutmon only has 1 evo path in these games he orignated from the Digimon Xros Wars anime/manga which to put mildly was very different from everything before and afterwards.

From ditching the traditional way Digimon works levels didn't exist and Digivolution worked very differently. Plus the show's titular gimmick is very hard to incorperate so Shoutmon just sticks out as a bit of sore thumb through no fault of his own in a game that follows more traditional Digimon conventions.
