Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?

I’m not sure anyone is still reading my stories.  I haven’t migrated my X-Files ones to AO3. I don’t think Gossamer provides any viewing statistics. I’d be very happy to hear that people still like my work.

What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?

My X-Files fandom experience was amazing.  I remember that sense of excitement and immediacy.  It was thrilling to write stories (and read those of other authors, of course) in an active fandom for a show that was on the air.  It was truly my first experience in an online world--a parallel world to my real life existence.  I learned how to keep a foot in each world.  As I recall, it was very hard to keep my focus in my “meat” world, when the online one was so fast moving and thrilling.  But I did get some balance in my life as time went on.

Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?

Message boards and mailing lists were my experience.  They were primitive compared to the pretty screens now.  I forged some amazing friendships, some of them with people I discovered lived relatively near me.  All I wanted to do was discuss episodes and fic.  The flame wars were a little intimidating, but also amusing if you didn’t get swept up.

What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?

I was very passionate about the fandom--as I said, there were times when my online life seemed to overpower my real life experiences.  I learned to manage that, and think I’m all the better for that.  And I found some amazing friendships that are active and thriving today.  I learned a lot about writing with XF fanfic.  The level of quality was stunning.  A decent percentage of fic were as good or better than traditional published fiction.  But there were so many writers!  I wanted to make an impact on the fanfiction world, but that meant taking my writing very seriously and learning to develop a story, pace that story, make it compelling and believable.

What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?

I had a couple of coworkers that talked about the show all the time.  I was curious, so I watched an episode.  I believe it was the cannibal town one.  I thought David Duchovny was odd looking and wasn’t terribly impressed.  But I tried another episode - Wetwired, which blew me away with the morgue scene when Mulder thinks he’s going to identify Scully’s body.  Ah...I thought, now, I see what everyone is talking about!  And from then I was hooked.

What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?

As I watched, I wanted more.  I was fairly new to the internet (frankly, the internet was new to almost everyone)  I found episode reviews, and some of them were fantastic.  Some mentioned fanfiction.  I was unaware of such a thing, though to be honest, since childhood, I’d been spinning stories in my head about characters on TV shows.  I found some fanfic. The first couple of stories were not great (at least one was horrible) but then I found some that were very good.  Probably a bit soap-operaish, but still readable.  And then I became voracious as I plowed through the mass of stories looking for the good stuff.  And boy was there good stuff.

What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?

I’m not estranged from it, but I don’t spend much time with it after all these years.  I’ve found fanfic in some other shows that I like and only occasionally read old XF stories.

Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?

I’ve not been as involved with any other fandoms, i.e. following commentary on the show.  I tend to dive into TV shows well after their heyday, so I’m always late to the party. I do read fanfic from other shows, and have actually written fanfic for other shows, but I need a really good idea to write.  None of the other fandoms for my other shows are as busy and active as XF, even ones currently in production.  And none of them have as much fanfic and certainly not the level of brilliance that we had in XF.

Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why?

I tend to go for interesting partnerships, very much in the XF fashion.  And a flawed hero is always a plus!  The partnerships don’t necessarily have to be romantic---in fact I find I prefer those that are not.  Really, Mulder and Scully were the only ones I felt deeply as a pairing, probably due to the chemistry between the actors. But the partnerships have to be well-balanced and realistic.  I loved the characters on Sleepy Hollow.  The two main characters were very much in the mold of Mulder/Scully.

My newest passion is British detective shows and I’ve completely fallen for the “Morse-verse” shows, Inspector Morse, Inspector Lewis and Endeavour.  Less of an XF feel, but compelling characters with interesting backstories.  Other favorite partnerships in the British detective genre are on Inspector Lynley and Broadchurch.

Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?

A bit less now, though I’m still involved with a wonderful group of ladies who love the X-Files.  When we get together for a yearly weekend, we binge episodes and eat impressive amounts of junk food.  XF isn’t on network TV these days, but if it was, I’d probably watch it.

A couple of years ago, I listened to Kumail Nanjiani’s XF podcast on my long commute.  I loved the commentary and interviews so much that I did watch some old episodes.

Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?

I don’t read much XF fic.  I’m currently reading in some other fandoms, but it’s harder to find good stories--the ones I follow aren’t very active these days and the quality just isn’t what XF was.  We were so lucky.  We had maybe 20 incredible top authors at any one time, then maybe another tier of 50 to 100  good to maybe great writers.  And with new episodes, there was so much inspiration. We were so spoiled.

Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?

Everything from Syntax6, MaybeAmanda, Kel.  A special story for me was “Strangers and the Strange Dead” by Kipler because I remember reading that very early in the morning in my unheated basement in the winter because that was the only time I could use our single computer without others in the family complaining.  I remember actually gasping at the big reveal in the story.  I can even remember the story’s opening line!

What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?

I was just learning how to write fiction when I was involved in XF, so I’m not sure my best work is there, though the bulk of my stories are there.  I liked some of the work I did with others.  I wrote Bone of Contention and Out of the Everywhere with Kel and I think that those stories got the best aspects of both of our styles.  For stories I wrote myself, I think they’re not bad, but they are rather short and it’s always easier to maintain a theme and style for a short story.  I liked Black Cherry Velvet.  I’m writing some Inspector Lewis stories that I think are pretty good--they benefit from the years of experience that I was gaining through XF.

Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?

Never say never, but I probably won’t write more XF.  I used to burn with it, but I think that got burned out a bit.  Still, I have such wonderful memories of the whole period.  It might be worth looking at again.

Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?

As I mentioned, I am currently playing in the Inspector Lewis world.  It’s sad--it’s a very small and not terribly active fandom.  Sad that my best work is in an inactive fandom where I’m lucky if 20 or 30 people are reading them.  It doesn’t help that I don’t write the most popular pairing.  

But I’m really enjoying it.  I occasionally write for Man From Uncle, which really shows my age, as that was a childhood obsession.

Where do you get ideas for stories?

With XF, it was always a take on an episode--did I get a tiny idea that I wanted to develop, or was I not thrilled with the way something went on the show.  Now,  it’s usually a “what if” kind of thing where I get inspired by a possible event and explore how that would play out, i.e.  “What if this character had a one night stand resulting in an unplanned pregnancy?”  What would happen?  How would he handle the consequences of this?  How would it change his life?

It’s literally my own name.  I SOOOO wish I’d used a pen name.  But I was naive and fandom was so new to me that it never occurred to me that a pen name would be better.  I always told myself that my real name sounded like something made up, like a TV newscaster name, and I hoped people assumed it was a pen name.

Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?

My husband and my kids were the only ones who knew about it for many years. Then I went to a fandom/fic gathering for three days and had to explain to a few other family members and my work mates why I was going to Chicago on my own. It’s still mostly a need to know thing and they don’t really need to know.

Home Movies #41: “Bye Bye Greasy” | January 18, 2004 - 11:00 PM | S04E03

WOW. I found out I had a candy left. What a great night.

“Bye Bye Greasy” is about Brendon directing the school play. His big idea is that he’s going to get McGurk to play the role of “Slick Rick”, and have him drive his actual car onto the stage. McGurk, completely enchanted by the prospect of getting to drive his car into a building, agrees. Shannon, the bully voiced by Emo Philips, intimidates Brendon into giving him the lead role. Melissa finds out she’s allergic to Kiwi and is morbidly distressed by this new-found knowledge and obsesses over the idea of accidentally eating Kiwi. (Penn Jillette voice) and Kenny... DIES.

The “OBVIOUSLY MORE WRITTEN” season of Home Movies just keeps on trucking and this episode more-or-less seems to work as evidence of that descriptor. Act one is basically just all the characters setting themselves up for some kind of failure and it happening in the last half. But the execution is so wonderful that the simple script shouldn’t really bug anyone watching. How great is it to see McGurk locked in his car while singing his big number, and then not be able to get the car off the stage. The idea of having to back out of a tight space in front of an auditorium full of people would fill me with so much dread. Like, personally speaking, I’m a really good parker unless I know somebody is watching me park, and I get so nervous. McGurk’s scene really made me squirm. It’s so funny. 

Also: the songs are real fun.

Okay, that’s it. That’s the end of the review. This is a really good episode. Like, top ten easily. Season 4 has some excellent episodes. This one also has three, COUNT ‘EM! three audio commentary tracks and they are all entertaining. Eugene Mirman is in one! For some reason!

MAIL BAG

Here we go... with the mail bag guys... sheesh!

It's funny that at the end of Space Ghosts life they finally made an "Adult Swim" style episode of Space Ghost. Flipmode is the only one that comes close but even that one could possibly air on Cartoon Network.. Not sure if  this move ultimately repulsed the creators or was just the final piss off before dumping the series for good. It's likely they only intended to do a little bit of Space Ghost and Brak until their new shows Birdman, ATHF and Sealab stood on their own. Lot to think bout!

But lets not lose sight of the fact that Space Ghost rules and they shoulda had it be on every single night in reruns and they should have done a new episode every week without a break and they should’ve played uncut episodes and just shown nasty nasty adult swim shorts to fill the extra time instead of editing the reruns and also every episode should’ve been on DVD at once in a big box set and every episode should’ve had commentary and C. Martin Croker should still be alive.

Hmm. No favs on that last entry. Do people really not like Tornado Shanks or are people sick of your mailbag segment? Hmm?

Influencers

I seriously started writing when I was 13, “serious” in this case meaning I submitted carefully typed reviews and articles to fanzines and short stories to magazines.

My father toyed with the idea of being a writer at some point in his life, and we had a stack of old Writer’s Digests and Jack Woodford’s How To Write For Money in the house.*

I can’t recall how many stories I wrote and mailed out, but none of them sold (my first short story sale was “Smuggler” in the November 1983 issues of Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine, but of course by that time I was already well established as an animation writer; I had placed a few articles and reviews in fanzines by that time).

Recently I had reason to re-read some of my own stories, and I got to wondering who my key literary influencers were.

Here, in rough chronological order, they are:

Ray Bradbury was the sci-fi writer that school boards felt comfortable with, and as a result stories like “The Pedestrian” turned up in lots of grammar school and junior high English textbooks.  Well, that was like Hartz Mountain heroin to 10 year old Buzzy Boy.  I voraciously read everything by Bradbury in every library I had access to.   Somewhere I read his short story “Pillar Of Fire” which includes a virtual laundry list of writers of the phantasmagorical, and of course that sent me off in search of each and every one of ‘em, and that led me straight to…

H.P. Lovecraft took one look at my Southern Baptist Sunday school theology, said “How cute” and proceeded to sweep everything off the table.  I have come to realize Lovecraft was a racist and a terribly, terribly flawed human being, but his cosmic horror stories (retconned by August Derleth as “The Cthulhu Mythos”) made me realize “Holy #&%@ -- I’m not even asking the right questions!”, and while Alfred Bester and Philip K. Dick and A.E. van Vogt would later expand my imagination even more, he’s the guy who shot the lock off the door.

When I started writing seriously (i.e., for actual submission of material, not just to fulfill a school assignment), I found myself typically bouncing between Bradbury and Lovecraft’s styles (the occasional Robert E. Howard and Ian Fleming pastiches excluded).  Luckily for all concerned, I landed closer to the Bradbury camp than the insanely verbose and grandiloquent Lovecraft…

Ernest Hemingway cropped up on my radar through osmosis:  I heard adults talking about him, read his name on gag book titles in Warner Brothers cartoons, saw the TV news report his suicide.  I saw The Old Man And The Sea and For Whom The Bell Tolls on TV when I was ten or eleven, and since both were touted as based on his works, I looked them up.  For Whom The Bell Tolls was the first one I read, and for a pre-adolescent boy that’s probably the perfect introduction to Hemingway.  By the time I started reading voraciously, Hemingway’s modern style of writing pretty much became the norm for everyone, but he mastered that spare lean style better than anyone else.

Mark Twain first hopped into view with Boy’s Life reprinting “The Celebrated Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County” even though I’d seen movies based on Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn before that.  That short story led me to his novels, and oddly his novels led me back to his short stories and essays.  Twain’s somewhat old fashioned yet naturalistic style flows so effortlessly and easily and handles asides and digressions so seamlessly that I found myself re-reading his works again and again to see how he did it.

H. Allen Smith is an unjustly forgotten American humorist from the 1930s-40s-50s.  I picked up a coverless copy of his anthology Poor H. Allen Smith’s Almanac in a remainder bin in a Dollar General Store in Athens, Tennessee more out of curiosity than anything else and was delighted to find a soul mate.  Smith, like Twain, was the literary equivalent of MAD Magazine, puncturing pretentious stuffed shirt shirts with pleasure.  Like Twain, Smith employs a seemingly effortless style to conceal a sharp cynical sting.

Harlan Ellison came to my attention as I started reading more and more science fiction digest and fanzines in the late 1960s and early 1970s.  Always controversial, deliberately provocative, and relentlessly entertaining on the page or in person, Harlan demonstrated more than any other writer I encountered the fire in the belly that represents The Work. (The Work is one of those things that can’t be described, can’t be defined; as Louis Armstrong once said of jazz “If you’ve got to ask, you’ll never know.”  Writers know what I’m talking about, authors think they know, but most people just go “…wha…?” when the topic comes up, which is why writers rarely talk about it in front of civilians.)  Harlan’s style and élan could never be duplicated, much less equaled, but damn, he left a lot of good inspirations and insights behind, and I find myself applying them -- filtered through my own style and experience, of course.  His best insight was that no matter how fantastic the story, it had to be about human emotions, or else it was just shit.

Thomas Heggen is another unjustly forgotten American writer, remembered (if at all) as the original author of the novel that became the movie Mister Roberts.  The novel began life as a series of vignettes and short stories Heggen wrote and sold to New Yorker magazine during World War II and based on is actual experiences as an officer aboard U.S. Navy cargo ships.  After the war he assembled, re-edited, re-wrote, and added new connecting material to turn these stories into a novel, and from there worked on the Broadway play adaptation.  He died a tragic early death (accident or suicidal despair over crippling writer’s block, take your pick).  Again, I was introduced to his writing through the movie based on his work, finding a reprint of the book sometime after I discovered H. Allen Smith.  In contrast to Twain and Smith, Heggen’s laconic style underplayed his humor, actually heightening the absurdity of his situations by treating them so matter of factly.

Richard E. Geis is better known as the editor of Science Fiction Review in all its various permutations (originally Psychotic then Science Fiction Review then The Alien Critic then back to Science Fiction Review then Richard E. Geis then Science Fiction Review again then Taboo) and as such one of the key influencers in the legendary New Wave vs Old Stuff feud that consumed sci-fi fandom back in the 1960s and early 1970s (which is to say just at the time when I was becoming active in fandom). Geis wrote fiction -- a handful of self-published sci-fi novels and stories in an era long before self-publishing was a viable norm, and over 100 porn novels at about $500 a pop – and I must be brutally honest, none of them were good.  But his genius and ability lay in his editorial and critical skills, and in his editorial writing for Science Fiction Review he demonstrated a lively and entertaining style that managed to meld coolly analytical criticism with engaging and often sly personal observations (Geis frequently employed Alter, his name for his darker, more sardonic alter ego, in a back and forth dialog to use dialectics to exposes the strengths and weaknesses of any work or proposition).

William Goldman’s screenplay of Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid was published as a paperback by Bantam Books.  When I saw it on the spinner rack in a small drug store in Madisonville, Tennessee, I thought it would be a novelization of an upcoming movie, but when I flipped it open I realized I was looking at an actual bona fide screenplay, and of course, I had to have it.  (The kneeslapper is that Goldman never wrote in conventional screenplay format, and while his works are excellent examples of how to tell a story cinematically, they sure aren’t industry standard.)  I followed his work after that, both on screen and off, and when he wrote Adventures In The Screen Trade I devoured its lessons hungrily.  While I see a certain stylistic influence in my writing from Goldman, what I really learned from his was structure and form and style.

Walter Hill and David Giler took Dan O’Bannon’s already legendary unproduced script for Alien and -- no slam against O’Bannon -- transformed it from a really, really good B-monster movie story into a work of poetry.  Compare and contrast the two screenplays; everything’s there in O’Bannon’s work, but Hill and Giler blew it through the roof. Their writing style -- seemingly minimalistic but in reality forcing the reader to see the movie exactly as they envisioned it -- was a revelation, and while I don’t try to ape it directly, I have used it to free me from conventional descriptions of characters, scenes, and actions to good effect.

Charles Bukowski was introduced to me by the late Gordon Kent, a friend and co-writer at Ruby-Spears Studios.  I quickly became enamored of his unadorned, almost journalistic style of fiction, but his poetry is what resonated the deepest.  After reading Hill and Giler’s Alien script, I looked at Bukowski’s poems with new eyes, seeing how he used a similar technique in many of his poems that they used in their screenplay.  This in turn led to a greater interest and appreciation in poetry as a whole on my part, and to start applying more poetic styles in describing characters and situations, again paring verbiage to a minimum while conjuring up more vivid mental images.

Like every writer, I’ve been influenced to some degree or another by every story I’ve read, every movie I’ve seen, every song I’ve heard.

Some may complain there are too many old white guys in this grouping, and that’s a fair cop – if I was drawing up a list of writers to recommend.

But I’m not doing that. I’m telling you what influenced me, how and why.

At Wild Horse Education we know advocacy can be physically and emotionally taxing, but we are grateful for this fight. We are grateful for your support.

At our board meeting in April I sat in a valley of 200 wild horses, hundreds of miles from a town, at sunset. The contrast sitting with the wild ones at PVC was stark.

Thanks – giving: a time to give thanks, a time to be grateful, and a time to reflect. (Marie Milliman)

I give thanks for our revered symbols of the West that still exist on our Public Lands. I give thanks for the humans that have found it in their hearts to adopt “the one”, or two, or more that have committed to the honor of becoming a guardian for those that have lost their freedom. I give thanks for all of those that have effectively created lasting change for Wild Horses perpetuity and safety.

As our thoughts turn to our friends and family, I give thanks to the supporters of “those” that are creating the change, a gratitude that is not exclusive to dollars, but of time, encouragement, friendship and love. A kinship that can only be understood by those that share a passion for our Wild Horses and Wild Places.

Personal Reflections

A reflection of my personal journey, including the Owyhee Roundup that was published in the most recent WHE Emagazine was titled Full Circle.

I recently had the opportunity to view the captured Owyhee horses in holding at the National Wild Horse and Burro Center at Palomino Valley.

A tiny wreath of tail hair from my adopted BLM mustangs; one from Owyhee where I left this on the range at the recent roundup. 

I stand corrected. This circle was not complete until I directly witnessed the final last leg of their journey into the holding/adoption system of the BLM. I will continue sharing my experience, where I left off with the last portion of my article;

Ground Zer0: Standing here in the Little Owyhee HMA, I dearly hold in my hands a commemoration wreath, comprised of Grace and Hallelujah’s tail hairs. This is to symbolize their unity as a herd in my pasture, and to return a “piece” of Grace to her homelands. I am grateful to share this experience with my friend and ally Laura Leigh. As I position the wreath on a sagebrush branch I can feel the completion of this circle, but it is difficult to fully release my hand. I imagine Grace as a foal living free with her herd, I say a prayer for the “euthanized” horses. I envision the branches of the sagebrush to represent all HMA’s, and the existing horses on them as well as their herd mates that have been captured and removed. I tried to walk away but, I could not. I returned to hold onto this symbol, why is it so hard to let go? I conclude that it is the many daunting circles that await their completion, and the rugged path that lies ahead to continue to speak their truth.

In my mind I contrast my beautiful Owyhee wild horse Grace, born free on the range with her family, to this newborn Owyhee laying in the dirt at Palomino Valley.

The  only previous time that I was at a holding facility was at the Ridgecrest Regional Wild Horse and Burro Corrals as a naïve, but enthusiastic adopter. I now see the horses in holding with more educated eyes, a suspicious mind, and a bruised heart.

This journey intensifies as it progresses. The depth and width of emotions compound with each experience and the knowledge of the threats that our wild ones experience and face to survive. For they have no voice, that is why we must speak for them, and our actions must be borne from a genuine heart and an honest voice. The honor of speaking for them is ever daunting and scarcely rewarding. Until the time that they are treated with equity, respect, and managed with science, the rewards will be few.

My first visit to a BLM facility to adopt my horse. It was such a completely different experience. The way I was treated and the eyes I see through have changed. 

With the best of intentions, I asked the facility manager some questions with the hopes to possibly help to promote the adoptions. Q – Where are the Owyhee horses, stallions, mares, babies located? A – they are mixed in with other horses now. Q – Where will they be transferred to? A – The stallions are not prepped for adoption yet. Q – How complete is their preparation? A – they are neither vaccinated, tagged, freeze branded, nor gelded. Now let’s think about this answer. How can they possibly be mixed in with other non-branded horses from other roundups and be accurately identified by their HMA of origin and/or inventory? Q – Where will the mares be shipped? A – the “older” ones will be shipped to long term holding. Q – Where will the “younger” mares be shipped to? A – Mustang Heritage Events, Carson Prison Program, and Nationally? Q – will the mares with babies be shipped? A – no. Well, that was quite the informative discussion (yes, sarcasm).

I guess I’ll just go find some unbranded stallions and figure they are Owyhee horses? If you have a pen unbranded and “mixed up” there is no way to accurately freezemark them. I have no idea why whose simple questions met with such flippancy. I had never been to the facility before and asked for a map. I was not told where to find one and “it wont help you anyway.” Eventually I found one in a folder in a foyer.

Youngsters now separated from their families. Will someone like the me I used to be come and adopt them? With all my heart I say a prayer for them. 

The despair of observing the horses in holding with my “updated” viewpoint filled me with even more sorrow. At the roundups we have a purpose; to monitor their humane handling. With a purpose comes a sense of accomplishment which for me serves as an emotional shield from the reality of the “process”.

Here, I am at the mercy of feeling helpless. This is where their current status of captivity has culminated. It’s not my circle, it’s theirs. However, their circle doesn’t have to end this way.

I urge you to adopt, an experience of a lifetime. Your investment in the privilege to become a guardian for a wild heartbeat of the West, will be reciprocated exponentially, this I can guarantee.

I urge you to learn more about wild horses on the range. Wild horses are caught in a complex system of land management that often resembles an “invitation only party” and is run “pay per view” style. As wild horse advocates we are often left at a locked door.

I am grateful for the opportunity to be in this fight. I am grateful for the work of Laura Leigh and Wild Horse Education. I am grateful for the honor of sharing this road with those that are compelled to fight the good fight.

Each story in this series is a delight! I am sorry to say goodbye to the gladiators and their mates but know they will do well together as they move forward through time and space.

What I liked:

* Jenny: human, taken from earth, carried to space in a pod, slave, working in a bar, resilient, sci-fan, enjoys adventure and adrenaline rushes, rather taken with Akri who resembles alien action heroes from her past

* Akri: artificial intelligence operator of spaceships, saved from burnout by entering brain-dead alien’s gladiator’s body, having difficulty assimilating his wiring to the body he is in, charming, protective, somewhat clueless but learns quickly

* The meet-cute and time on the run

* The dialogue between the two

* That Jenny is more experienced and savvier than Akri…about some things

* The snippets showcasing characters and their mates from previous books

* The way everything is tied up at the end

* Wondering if there might be a future book to see how they are all doing in the future

* Looking forward to the next series with Naga aliens that are snake-like but probably capable of mating with humans

What I didn’t like:

* Who and what I was meant not to like

* The pain suffered by Akri and the torturer that inflicted it

* Having to say goodbye to the series

Artist Spotlight: Mattie Leon - Signal Hill

Welcome to the first Artist Spotlight blog on #folkedoutfriday. I thought this would be a cool way to interact with artists, promote them, and tell you what I like all at the same time. I was originally going to call this an album review but I felt like this post was more of a spotlight considering I know the artist and asked a few questions. I wouldn't really call it an interview but there is enough to give you a bit on the artist. I still might do some album reviews, on classic or new folk and country albums. If you have an artist or album you'd like my take on let me know in the comment section and I'll check it out!

Artist: Mattie Leon Album: Signal Hill Runtime: Seven songs, twenty-eight minutes and eighteen seconds.

Mattie is a 31-year-old multi-instrumentalist from Toronto. I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of years ago at Gain Music and Arts festival in Guelph, and again at this years. A few weeks ago we met up at a show in Toronto at the Horseshoe Tavern to see The Celebration Army  (you need to make a point to go see that friggin' band by the way. I couldn't believe it) and got to catch up on the production of his new video for Vimy, the fifth track on the record. I'm just going to throw this out there... he's the nicest person you will ever meet! 

When I asked the Toronto based piano, guitar, and bass playing singer what his influences were I smiled, he has a great way of wearing influences on his sleeve without sounding like he's stolen anything from them. With an all-star group of influences like The Beatles, Paul Simon, Paul McCartney (solo), The Band, Ryan Adams, and Ray Charles, Mattie has a way of bringing these artists into his music with more of a hat tip or a wink and a smile than a direct holla at the boyz, if you know what I mean. To get those pesky bills paid Mattie is an Educational Resource Worker in Brampton. He owns a project studio where he works mostly on his own stuff but has also produced and plays on fellow band mates solo album N3lly (another GREAT project). Mattie's goal is to support himself through music in the near future on the tour and releasing side of things not so much as a producer.

Now, Mattie's sound isn't what I usually think of when I think of when I think of folk music but like all genres, folk evolved. If I were here to be a purist there wouldn't be much point in this site at all because we wouldn't get very far and I'm going to leave it at that because that sounds like a whole other post to me! RIGHT AWAY with the first two songs, I get Graceland by Paul Simon, who is, in my opinion, top five songwriters of all time. I love the clap in the background of Sister Simone and the bass line in both Sister Simone and Boy. I like the way the percussion on the whole album is present, interesting and not overwhelming letting the songwriting and melodies shine. I'd like to pick a favourite for both A and B but I'm torn. As much as I enjoy the bounce this record starts with slow jams are, well, my JAM. On side A I'm torn between In Your Wake and the title track Signal Hill. I guess going off of my usual taste I will throw the victory in the direction of Signal Hill for its delicious fingerpicking and strings, but that lead guitar on In Your Wake Gets me!

So what do I think of when I think of folk? I think of acoustic instruments, Bob Dylan, the civil rights movement, God, the art of telling a story, hard times, protest and war. Song number five on this record or song one on the B side is called Vimy. This song tells the story of two young folks in love "barely even seventeen" and the young man pondering if he'll make it home so that "maybe I could love you still". It covers lying about your age to join the military, and everyone you love heading to the front lines. A few years ago if you asked me my opinion on war and people who joined the armed forces I probably would have said something like "war is stupid and signing up to kill and be killed is also stupid." (I'm just being honest here, also being a teenager comes with strange views). In recent years my opinion has changed and I can't begin to communicate how thankful I am for those people that served in WWI, WWII and continue to serve for freedom. Thank you. Anyways, I said all that to say that this song could easily be blown over and I don't think it should be. As I sit at my computer crying tears of thankfulness (I'm a puddle of a human being) I am impressed by how Mattie tells this story that was so real for so many people across the globe. Your mom's dad, your dad's uncle, your great-grandfather had to live with this harsh reality. This is hands down my favourite song on the record.

As I've been writing I have been watching and listening to quite a bit of Mattie's music and watching some videos on the ol' Youtube and I didn't realize how great guitar player he is, in fact, he plays everything on this record except for the drums. With the next track, Bowery, I really enjoy the work put into the arrangement of the song, and all of the parts you can hear when you really start to pull it apart. This goes for the whole end of the record. As you reach the middle of the album things slow, and if you think of Vimy the way I do it gets kind of serious too. Bowery has a great build around three minutes ending with a display of distorted guitar and a busy piano demanding attention in the background. The song reverts back to its catchy hook of a progression and ends quietly only to have The Best Things come in with another catchy intro and a driving snare and kick drum to bring it home. I really dig the way this album is ended.

When talking to Mattie he acknowledged that it is a shorter album but hey, I think he really succeeded in creating an experience. When the album was over I had this great big exhale, like I had really just done something with my time.
