Collector's Edition: Melissa Scully, the One and Only (Part I)
Melissa Scully, a character with incredible impact compared to her minuscule screen time. Today, we honor her memory.
(If you're curious to read more Melissa-dedicated fic, I recommend The Other Side: Melissa Scully's Recs's site.)
Loose chronological order below~
audrey_cooper/Audrey Cooper's Fairy Tale
Melissa dug in her feet and made tracks on the thin ice covering the sidewalk. "You'll fall if you don't _slow down_." She emphasized the last two words with jerks on Dana's hand. Dana's mitten came off, and, already overbalanced, Melissa flopped down into the snow that was piled next to the sidewalk.
Melissa Scully is dragged around by her little sister (who may or may not have seen a cryptid.)
resistate's Scared at Night
Dana hears another almost-moan, this one following by a terrible scraping sound. Dana has half-convinced herself she has been imagining things. She jumps a little bit without meaning too and bangs her elbow on her bedside table by accident. "Melissa," she says urgently, before she can stop herself. "Missy!"
Pre-S1 Scully deduces that the noise under her bed is Melissa.
@minuete-blog/Minuete's
The Scully Sister
Charlie, bless his soul, told Mom he planned to stick up for a kid that was being bullied in class. Dana, the overachiever, wanted to ask her teacher for extra credit on the history project regarding California missions on top of the required diorama all students had to turn in. Once it was my turn to speak, I blurted, “I’m not going to get confirmed next year.”
Melissa's slow journey away from religion.
Porch Talk
Dana glared at me as she chewed on her bottom lip. A smug smile crossed my lips. “I thought so. Dana, if you’re doing this to nab a guy, then he’s definitely not the one for you. If you’re doing this to get attention, then believe me, you got it. Just don’t hide the genius that you are. That’s the real you.”
Pre-S1 Melissa has a very serious talk with her little sister.
@mulders-boyish-enthousiasm/muldersboyishenthousiasm's Dear Stubb
Mom helped me fill a lot of papers to redirect letters and subscriptions I receive through mail. Melissa could not stop hovering over my shoulder sending me good vibes using a new age technique she just learned. Bill didn’t even bother to feign interest in my going to Quantico. And Ahab… well… Ahab avoided me most of the time. What about Charlie you’ll wonder? Charlie’s absent. As usual.
Pre-S1 Scully writes about her family and new assignment to an unidentified friend.
Beshter's X-files Seasons
"Mom said you were in town, I thought you would call." Scully pulled away, glancing at her stove where strange and good smelling foods were bubbling.
"Yeah, well it's Tuesday. We always have dinner on Tuesday, remember?" Melissa produced a key from her pocket, waving it in front of Scully. "And as I remember it was my turn to cook."
"That was a year ago, Missy."
Melissa Scully appears many times in this sprawling epic spanning the first seven years Scully spent on the X-Files.
zulu's
First Sight
How her parents had managed to live such confined, orderly lives for over thirty years was beyond her; something to do with a military mindset, she supposed. Bill and Charles had never minded, not like her--or Melissa.
Pre-S1 Melissa pokes a few bears after Scully announces her new assignment.
Third Memory
Melissa gasped. This was far more than a dream vision. It was cold here. She smelled the acrid sickness of antiseptic and vomit, heard the insistent beeps and shushing of life support equipment. She knew it was Dana's mind that touched hers, and she felt herself sliding down into her sister's memory. She tensed and called out, "Dana!" In her bedroom, alone, there was no answer. She was falling, falling into Dana's thoughts, into her sister's past.
Anasazi Melissa taps into Mulder's aura.
Shelba's The Man of her Dreams
Months passed; she forgot about the dream. Then one night in late summer, she gasped awake, shaken to the core. The man from her dream had returned in a nightmare. His long body was fastened to a chair, if a chair had been made by Dante.
Pre-S1 Melissa has unknowingly dreamed of Mulder for years.
@frostbitepandaaaaa/FrostbitePanda's Nine Minutes and Then Some - Chapter 4 (Ao3)
Missy almost chokes on a cherry tomato, looks up at her sister to see if she’s suddenly been replaced by someone else. But Dana Scully is still there, pushing her fork through her spinach, her face carefully schooled.
Post Pilot Melissa sides with Mulder against Scully.
@viceversawrites/viceversa's One word prompt: Maybe (Ao3)
“He’s, uh. He’s tall.”
“Dana, you’re tiny. Everyone is tall compared to you.”
“He’s tall compared to most people, Melissa. And he, uh.”
“Come on, spill it.”
“He has a nice face. It’s… sad.”
S1 Melissa gets Scully to admit her new partner's cute.
@katy-kt-katie/Katy_KT_Katie's
“Jersey Devil” ficlet (Ao3)
“Who?” Scully asked, washing dishes, phone propped to her ear with her shoulder.
“The guy…that dad you went out with. You wore that beautiful lace dress?”
“Oh, Rob.”
“Rob….” Melissa said, stretching his name as if prodding her for any salacious details.
Post Jersey Devil Melissa figures out Scully might have a crush on her partner.
Fictober Day 17 Post “One Breath” (Ao3)
Mulder’s eyes shot up to meet Melissa’s; a deer caught in the headlights, trying to decide if he should admit or deny his feelings.
“You should break the ice, let her know that she’s on your mind, ” Melissa encouraged.
Post One Breath Melissa encourages Mulder to make some moves.
@just-a-donut-who-reads/just_a_donut_who_reads 's One Day
Missy warned me not to take on the assignment to the X-files. She said it would be dangerous. It is. She said it would be frustrating. It is. She said it would drive me mad, make me question everything I learned in med school and in Quantico...
That said - on the X-files, I have something Missy never anticipated.
An excellent view.
S1 Scully realizes she has a crush on Mulder.
@swinging-stars-from-satellites/bravest_person_in_Wonderland 's
a faint and faraway sound
She didn't see the glance shared between Melissa and their mother, who had been disagreeing over something else just before they sat down to eat, but were the two who understood the best — Dana was liable to take this too much to heart, and if she couldn't change the way she spoke, she would take it as a personal failing.
Scully worked hard to overcome her childhood lisp... and feels a bit hurt when Mulder draws attention to it.
scully and monica (scully's sister, iirc?)
Dana holds the phone between her shoulder and ear, precariously stretching the cord as she tries to carry a frozen turkey over to the sink without dropping either it or the phone; her parents are coming for Christmas dinner tomorrow, but Melissa predictably couldn't make it.
AU-- S1 Scully may have quit the FBI, but that doesn't stop her sister from bringing up Mulder.
💬?
"Missy," Dana says after breakfast, still sitting at her mother's table while Melissa insists on taking care of the dishes. Maggie had left momentarily to run to the store. "Promise you won't think I'm insane."
Post Beyond the Sea Scully asks Melissa if she believes in ghosts.
Whumpay Day 5/Lu's Whumpay 2022 - Chapter 5
"When's the last time you ate?" Asks a voice somewhere out of his range of vision, and Mulder turns in the hard plastic hospital chair to see who it is.
Melissa Scully, all five foot five inches of her — plus three extra inches of platform boots — stands in the doorway of the waiting room, her arms crossed and eyes surprisingly clear, considering that she's been here as long as he has. When he doesn't respond right away, she raises an eyebrow and asks again. "So, how long has it been? I know you haven't slept, but I'm not about to get on your case for that."
One Breath Melissa reads between the lines of Mulder's behavior.
@leiascully's (Ao3)
OctoberFicFest Day 9: Herbal Tea/OctoberFicFest 2021 and OctoberFicFest Day 13: Crystal/OctoberFicFest 2021
Missy’s apartment is cluttered, but it’s a cheerful, kitschy kind of clutter. There are at least three tarot decks, and those are just the ones Dana can see from her mismatched chair at the battered kitchen table. The whole apartment smells faintly of herbs and incense. There are bunches of flowers hung over the doorway to dry and crystals scattered over most of the horizontal surfaces. On the coffee table, a Ouija board is half-buried under a pile of paperbacks. The planchette rests in a lipstick-smudged wine glass.
“No crystal ball?” she cracks.
Melissa's kitschy kitchen and crystals have a lasting impact on one Dana Scully.
Scully gets the below toe ring in S4
She bought the ring on a whim from a basket on the counter at some little witchy shop that she visited out of nostalgia for the scent of incense. Melissa had worn a toe ring when they were younger and it had driven their mother crazy. Scully had thought it looked elegant and just a little daring. She felt tender for that younger self while she browsed the display of rings, stirring through them.
Melissa sparks an unlikely interest.

Scully and Missy talk about her work
“But what’s he like?” Missy asks, hand curled around a chunky mug, her fingers playing with the string of a tea bag. She asks as though it’s a question with an easy answer, like Mulder’s some sandy-haired podiatrist who enjoys cooking and tennis.
“I don’t know,” Scully answers truthfully. “He’s… brooding. Quick-witted. Intelligent.”
Melissa’s eyebrows go up. She probably shouldn’t have led with brooding.
S1 Melissa assures Scully she's not poking fun.
Can we please have more Missy and Scully conversations, thank you😁
There’s a brightness to her sister that lights up the gloom of the room, an overeager, watery delirium in the eyes reminding Scully that she’s had A Very Close Call.
Post One Breath Melissa carefully fills her sister in on Mulder's behavior.
The Concept of Dualism
“Dana and I are going to come pick you up,” she said, “what time are you being released?”
Scully could hear a dull mumbling from the receiver.
“It’s fine, she could use the fresh air. We’ll see you then.”
Scully leaned back on the couch.
“Thanks, Missy,” she said, “if you can help him get settled into his apartment, I’m sure I can find somebody to-”
Melissa cut her off.
“Oh, I’m not taking him to his apartment,” Missy said, matter-of-factly, “I’m bringing him here.”
Post Dod Kalm Melissa insists on nursing Scully and Mulder back to health.
Old Chem pt 3
Melissa looked at it a moment and then gave him a firm grip, observing him appraisingly while she shook it maybe three seconds longer than was polite.
“So is it Dr. Mulder, then?” she asked, releasing it.
“Just Mulder,” he said.
AU-- Old Chem Mulder meets one Melissa Scully.
Belated Birthday wishes and a Prompt: Valley of the Sun
“Heard you were trying to do this without me,” he said with a smile, tossing the towel to the floor and kneeling down next to the bed to take Scully’s hand.
“I didn’t think it would happen this fast,” Scully said, and could feel another contraction coming on, the pain so intense she let out a howl.
“I did,” Missy said under her breath.
Scully was too caught up in the grip of agony to give her any grief for it.
AU-- Valley of the Sun Mulder surprises his pregnant partner with a familiar face.
@wtfmulder's (Ao3) are you wearing space pants (Ao3)
“Missy helped me make it,” she shrugs, setting the card back down. She is so bad at faking nonchalant.
S1 Mulder is affronted by a prank... or is he?
Michelle Kiefer's Only The Ones Who Believe
Melissa had been the only one who supported her decision to join the FBI. "Dana, no one can walk a path set by someone else. You have to choose your own way." What would Melissa say now? Because Dana--I can't go dancing, I have to finish my chemistry paper--Scully has set off in a direction she could never have imagined.
Post Little Green Men Scully wishes Melissa could give her advice.
AUs
Skinfull's Before
“Let me guess…” Melissa hummed on the other side of the phone. “You’re in the bath, you have a hot chocolate, you’re just in from work and you had a chicken salad for dinner, at your desk in the morgue. Your fridge is bare. Much like your dating life.”
AU-- Melissa is determined to set her FBI morgue sister up with a date... but she might be a bit too late.
CaptainLyssa's
To FBI or Not To FBI
Biting her lip, she hoped her next question wouldn’t come as a complete surprise to her family. “Has Dana told you if she’s pregnant?’
“What makes you think your sisters pregnant,” Maggie hedged, wondering at Melissa’s intuition.
AU-- Pre-S1 Melissa seems to sense that not only has her E.R. sister been swept up in a whirlwind romance, but that she might be (is) already (accidentally) pregnant-- and that there is danger and intrigue whirling around Scully's new boyfriend.
Time Slip
“Missy?” Scully managed before the pounding increased in her head.
“Dana,” Missy asked, carefully watching her sister sit up and reach an unsteady hand to the base of her neck. “Who’s Mulder?”
AU-- S6 Scully is shot back in time, before her FBI recruitment.
Sukie Tawdry's The Way Things Are (1) and The Way Things Are (2)
"Mulder, your sneakers are muddy," Scully said, trying to hide her pleasure at the sight of her dripping partner. "This is my sister, Melissa. Melissa, this is my partner, Fox Mulder."
"The prodigal daughter?" Mulder asked, toeing off his sneakers. Drying his hand against his pant leg, he leaned over the table to shake Melissa's hand. "It's good to meet you."
"I wouldn't have missed this for the world." Melissa studied Mulder's face with fascination. "I just had to meet the man who knocked up my baby sister."
AU-- S1 Melissa sweeps back into Scully's life after her sister trips into an accidental pregnancy, kidnapping, and shacking-up situation.
MSR Collection: Devotion Chapter 2 and Chapter 3
“It’s just—she can sometimes push people away and act like things…like they don’t bother her,” Melissa said. “But she deserves someone who can get through that and understand that.”
“I understand a lot about Scully,” Mulder offered. “I’m learning more every day, and I…I look forward to learning everything I can.”
“Then you’ve got my blessing, or whatever, for what it’s worth,” Melissa said.
AU-- Post One Breath Melissa is delighted that Mulder and Scully are dating (and senses there is something else they aren't saying.)
@sigritandtheelves/DarlaBlack’s
AU: Melissa Didn’t Die
Melissa’s recovery is slow and painstaking, and Scully helps her through every step. The sisters grow closer than they’ve ever been, until eventually, they are both ready to go back to work. By then it is October and chilly. Mulder has had months to learn, to remember, what life without Scully is like. They’ve talked on the phone, had lunch a few times, and he’s visited with both her and Melissa, but it has of course not been the same. He’s a little lost without her.
AU-- Paper Clip Scully and Mulder's relationship changes after Melissa doesn't die.
Birth Day
It takes her an hour, but Melissa’s jeep finally rumbles up the drive, too fast, like she owns the place. The older sister emerges, swinging out her door almost before the jeep has stopped. “Somebody having a baby over here?” she calls to them. She drags out an enormous purse, a kind of floppy tote in purple tie-dye.
AU-- Doula Melissa is there for her sister and her partner.
@baronessblixen's (Ao3)
Thinking About Babies
All Dana is thinking about these days is college. Doing well. Becoming a medical doctor. She’s trying to get a glimpse of her older sister sitting there on the bed, but all she sees, or thinks she sees, is a silhouette. Her long hair falls into her face and she brushes it away quickly, almost angrily. She needs to get it cut and soon. It’s not practical and Dana is practical – or wants to be anyway. Long, wavy hair is for girls who spent their days at the beach. Dana is no longer that girl.
“A career is not the most important thing in the world.” The sheets rustle and Melissa comes into sight. She smiles secretively and leans over Dana’s shoulder to look at her homework. Who does homework on a Friday night?
Pre-S1 Melissa and Scully have a weighty conversation that the latter revisits, years and years later, in a place called Home.
Bruises
“Melissa and I- well, Missy had this idea to take this self-defense class and she made me go with her. She thought after… after Duane Barry it might be a good idea. I told her I don’t need it,” she chuckles, remembering their conversation. Melissa wouldn’t accept no for an answer. “I got a bit carried away.”
Post One Breath Mulder stresses over bruises on Scully's wrist.
Another Banner Year (Ao3)
Scully opens the door after a series of frantic knocks. As soon as she does, Melissa barges into her apartment, her hair as furiously red as her face.
“Well, hello to you, too,” Scully says while her sister just stares at her with a wild look. The anger on her face is a familiar sight that reminds her of her childhood.
Post Our Town Melissa drops in after Scully's latest on-the-job trauma.
Merry Christmas, Darling - Chapter 21
"Dana and Fox, sitting in tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g," Melissa hums, making kissing noises.
S2 Melissa enjoys teasing Scully about her shopping partner.
It’s a Match
Melissa Scully stares at him, waiting for him to confirm or deny it. She quirks an eyebrow, much like his own Scully does. It shakes him out of his stupor.
“Would you please be quiet,” he hisses.
AU-- S2 Melissa corners Mulder at a Scully family party, determined to get the truth out of him.
25 Days of Christmas - Chapter 20
“Where do you want me?” Mulder asks Scully, rolling up his sleeves. “What can I do?”
“We need someone to do the dishes,” Melissa says with a sweet smile.
“I can do that.” He gives her mother and her sister his best, most charming smile before he pushes past them and starts washing the dishes.
“That was a joke,” Melissa whispers into her ear, watching Mulder with big eyes. “Can I borrow him for one weekend?”
AU-- S2 Melissa dares Scully to make a move.
could you do msr cuddling for comfort pls?
“You need to gohome, Scully. Where is your mother? I thought maybe you could stay with her fora while.”
Disappointment bubbles up inside of her. She can’t recall the last time Melissa smiled at her, made fun of her. The only picture in her head right now is not of her sister. It’s her mother blinking away angry tears.
Post Paper Clip Scully is afraid to go home.
Can't help myself also #18 😍😍😍/Secret Spots
“We should go back downstairs.”
“I haven’t seen your room yet.”
“Later,” she promises and his eyebrows shoot up. “I didn’t mean-” but maybe she did. Maybe that’s exactly what she meant. “Later,” she repeats and he nods, his face eager. “Now come on.” She takes his hand but before they descend the stairs, she presses him against the wall – into that one spot Missy showed her one time.
AU-- Post Millennium Scully introduces Mulder to Melissa's secret cubbyhole.
mulder braiding scully's hair during the iwtb era ❤
"Melissa and I did this for each other," Scully says, sounding wistful. "We'd talk about boys and school. Well, she talked about boys." They both chuckle, remembering their sisters.
Pre-IWTB Mulder braids Scully's hair.
The Day I First Saw You
There they are: Frohike, Byers and Langley, who is wearing a Santa hat and clinging to a shrimpy fir, looking ridiculous.
“We saw it first!” He complains now, his glasses fogging up from his fury.
“You did not!” A woman with long, wavy hair retorts, trying to push him away.
“Please refrain from violence,” Byers says, sounding anxious.
“This is my tree,” the woman says. “Its aura is clearly attuned to mine.”
“Its what?” Langley asks, exchanging looks with his friends.
AU-- Pre-S1 Mulder, Scully, Melissa, and TLG meet while the squabbling over Christmas trees.
Thanks for reading~
Enjoy!

SOMETHING OLD
I have been streaming 24 on Hulu, mostly for background noise... or when I'm stuck in between other shows.
This show brings back a lot of memories for me. I usedbto watch it with my oldest son when he was still living at home.
The show stars Kiefer Sutherland, who could ask me to live with him in a cardboard box under an interstate and I would say "let's go!"
Sutherland plays the role of a counter-terrorist federal agent by the name of JACK BAUER. Bauer, the head of an elite team of agents, spends each day (every season is one day, 24 consecutive hours) attempting to uncover, divert, and stop various terrorist acts against the nation.
If you watch the first season, it will definitely leave you wanting more. The second season seems to be the conclusion of the story that began in season 1. I don't like giving away the story...especially in a show (or seasons that i declare a must-watch).
Season 3 brings about a whole different vibe. Although Sutherland is still a very vital role, this season seems to take a dive into a few other characters on the show, including Tony, (played by Carlos Bernard) Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) who is married to Tony in this season, and Kim Bauer, Jack's daughter played by Elisha Cuthbert.
I found this particular season more difficult to binge straight through and actually spent several weeks to get through it.
When season 4 began, I struggled to even make it through the first episode and have not gone back.
I have to admit, I knew there was at least 4 seasons of the show but hadn't realized that it actually has 9 seasons. Since I have not even made it through episode 1 of season 4, I definitely can't tell you anything about the remainder of the series.
Perhaps when I have run out of everything else to binge, I may go back and try again.
I will say, without a doubt, that seasons 1 and 2 are a must-watch by me. Season 3 is a "ok for background noise" ...
If you have watched the entire series, I'd love to hear your take.
That's my 2 cents on an oldie but with Kiefer Sutherland in it, it's a goodie!

Haterating and hollerating through the '90s:
POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE (1990): Carrie Fisher scripted this witty adaptation of her novel about coked-up, pill-popping actress Suzanne Yale (Meryl Streep), who overdoses in the bed of a strange man (Dennis Quaid), ends up in rehab, and learns that the only way the production insurance company will let her keep working is if she stays with her mother, an aging singer-actress-diva (Shirley MacLaine) whose love for her daughter is equaled only by her tireless determination to upstage her. (No, it's not autobiographical at all, why do you ask?) Fisher's deftly paced, funny script weaves in various serious mother-daughter moments without ever becoming mawkish, and offers a fabulous part for MacLaine, who has a ball poking fun at herself as well as Debbie Reynolds, Fisher's real-life mother and the obvious basis for the film's lightly fictionalized "Doris Mann." Curiously, the weakest link is Streep, who never quite sheds her customary air of prim affectation and always seems ill at ease with Fisher's layers of self-deprecating, sarcastic humor. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Apparently not, although I had questions about Suzanne's rehab friend Aretha (Robin Barlett). VERDICT: MacLaine's finest hour, but Streep's primness keeps it "good" rather than "great."
TERESA'S TATTOO (1993): Painfully unfunny crime comedy, directed by Melissa Etheridge's then-GF Julie Cypher and costarring Cypher's ex, Lou Diamond Phillips, along with an array of incongruously high-profile actors like Joe Pantoliano, Tippi Hedren, Mare Winningham, Diedrich Bader, k.d. lang (!), Sean Astin, Emilio Estevez, and Kiefer Sutherland, most in bit parts (some of them unbilled). The headache-inducing plot concerns a couple of brain-dead thugs whose elaborate hostage scheme hits a snag when their hostage (Adrienne Shelly) accidentally dies. Their solution is to kidnap lookalike Teresa (also Adrienne Shelly), a brainy Ph.D. candidate, and disguise her to look like the dead girl — including giving her a matching tattoo on her chest — in the hopes that the dead girl's idiot brother (C. Thomas Howell) won't notice the switch until it's too late. This truly bad grade-Z effort, barely released theatrically, feels like either a vanity project or a practical joke that got out of hand, and is interesting mostly as a curiosity for Melissa Etheridge fans: The soundtrack is M.E.-heavy, and Etheridge herself has a brief nonspeaking role. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Technically? (Etheridge has no lines and lang plays a Jesus freak.) VERDICT: May erode your affection for M.E.
BLUE JUICE (1995): Tiresome comedy-drama about an aging surfer (a terribly miscast, painfully uncomfortable-looking Sean Pertwee) who's still determined to continue living like a 20-year-old surf bum with his obnoxious mates, even though his back is giving out and he's perilously close to driving away his girlfriend (a disconcertingly hot 25-year-old Catherine Zeta Jones), who is keen for him to finally cut the shit. Meanwhile, the scummiest of his mates (Ewan McGregor) doses their pal Terry (Peter Gunn) and gets him to chase after an actress from his childhood favorite TV show (Jenny Agutter) in hopes of dissuading from marrying his actual girlfriend (Michelle Chadwick), and their mate Josh (Steven Mackintosh), a successful techno producer, flirts with an attractive DJ (Colette Brown) who's actually furious at him for building a vapid techno hit around a sample of her soul singer dad's biggest hit. The latter storyline probably had the most potential (although a weird scene where Josh is castigated by a group of outraged soul fans seems like a lesser TWILIGHT ZONE plot), but none of the script's various threads ever amounts to much. CONTAINS LESBIANS? It doesn't even pass the Bechdel test. VERDICT: If you happen upon it, you may be tempted just for Zeta Jones (and/or Brown), but the rest wears out its welcome with alacrity.
HIGHER LEARNING (1995): Potent story of simmering racial tensions on the campus of a university that definitely isn't USC (writer-director John Singleton's alma mater, and where most of the film was obviously shot), let down by incredibly heavy-handed execution. (The film's final shot is of the word "UNLEARN" superimposed over a giant American flag!) A capable cast (including Omar Epps, Kristy Swanson, Michael Rapaport, Jennifer Connelly, Ice Cube, Tyra Banks, Cole Hauser, Laurence Fishburne, and Regina King) tries to maintain a sense of emotional reality through Singleton's frequent excursions into overpowering melodrama, but there are so many competing plot threads that few characters have any depth; curiously, the script's most complex characterization is in the scenes between budding white supremacist Remy (Rapaport) and Aryan Brotherhood organizer Scott (Hauser). Singleton made this film when he was 25, and there's no shame in its sense of breathless ambition (even if it inevitably bites off more than it can chew), but the overwrought stridency undercuts its intended impact. For a more effective treatment of similar themes in roughly the same period, try Gilbert Hernandez's graphic novel X, originally serialized in LOVE & ROCKETS #31–39 and first collected in 1993. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Jennifer Connelly gives Kristy Swanson a bisexual awakening. VERDICT: The '90s through a bullhorn.
CRASH (1996): Divisive David Cronenberg adaptation of the J.G. Ballard novel, about a movie producer called James Ballard (James Spader) and his desperately horny wife (Deborah Kara Unger), drawn into a loose-knit group of car-crash fetishists organized around a man called Vaughan (Elias Koteas at his creepiest), who stages recreations of famous celebrity crashes like the 1955 accident that killed James Dean. Despite some pretentious dialogue about "the reshaping of the human body by modern technology," the controlling idea might be better summarized as "anything can be a paraphilia if you get weird enough about it." Part of what offends people about the film is that Cronenberg deliberately treats the entire story with the same frosty clinical detachment, rendering the "normal" sex scenes just as remote and perverse as the characters' fixation on the grisly aftermath of car wrecks; the point is that there is no line, just different facets of the same erotic longing, which each of the (admittedly unsympathetic) principal characters embodies in different ways. Spader, Kara Unger, and Koteas are very good, as is Holly Hunter, in perhaps the bravest role of her career, but Rosanna Arquette is underutilized. A worthwhile companion piece would be Steven Soderbergh's 1989 SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE, also with Spader, which is much more highly regarded (though almost as contrived and scarcely less perverse), perhaps because it seeks to titillate where Cronenberg does not. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Briefly. (See previous note in re: underutilization of Rosanna Arquette.) VERDICT: Icy but interesting.

Here are some very good fics involving the X-Files episode “Folie a Deux." Enjoy! And Chaos Shall Reign by Kronos Mulder and Scully are called in to investigate the explosion of an air separation plant in Hampton, Virginia, in which more than a hundred people were killed. Mulder struggles against self-doubt and considers his future with the Bureau, even as he and Scully become embroiled in politics when their opinion as to what occurred runs contrary to that of the local FBI SAC. Despite the roadblocks, their investigation leads them to a conspiracy whose purpose could result in an even worse disaster. Skinner joins his agents in a race against time that could very well end with all their deaths, along with thousands of innocents. Bridge by Maria Nicole Mulder and Scully deal with the aftermath of their little trip from “Field Trip,” and confront an old case. Broken and Restored by Dawn Fill in the blank for Folie a Deux. What happened at the hospital after Scully rescued Mulder, and how did it influence her response to Skinner's questions? / Fill in the blank for Folie a Deux. Mulder has lost the desire to continue. Can Scully restore it? The Conversation by Katwoman What if Scully and Mulder had gotten stuck in that elevator at the end of "Folie A Deux"? folie imposée by @seek-its-opposite She could play his scrapes on a turntable and the vinyl would sing a slow tragedy, a myth reborn in jazz. Cassandra the cursed prophet, reincarnated as a boy who believes in aliens. (post "folie à deux") Insight series: Insight, Dark Fire, Wakeup Call, Shutdown, Overload, and Past Tense by Joann Humby Suppose Scully had arrived at the hospital two minutes later in Folie a Deux. (Past Tense is effectively a prequel to the series - it describes just what did happen to Mulder in this version of FaD. I wrote it after Insight III, but it can be read as a standalone. Though I think it'll be more enjoyable if you've read at least Insight 1 first.) locking out the ghosts by skuls (@ghostbustermelanieking) Post-Emily arc, an emotionally vulnerable Scully breaks off the incredibly new relationship she and Mulder have recently been engaged in. As the season moves forward, how do they cope with this new development in their relationship, and how do the stressful situations their job puts them in affect this? A Madness Shared by Two by impulsive_astrophile (@impulsive-astrophile) A missing scene between the night Scully rescues Mulder in the mental hospital and the next morning when she meets with Skinner. Rock Bottom by Chimerical1975 Following All Souls and expanding on Folie a Deux, Mulder and Scully struggle to find reconciliation. God, angels, demons, lies, betrayals, truths, forgiveness, faith, an errant kiss, and the changing nature of their relationship all come into play as they face what they’ve done to each other. They’ve hit rock bottom, can they find their way back up. Second Sight by Michelle Kiefer Takes place immediately following Folie a' Deux. Shared Comfort by Baroness_Blixen (@baronessblixen) Scully stays with Mulder after the events in Folie à Deux.

X-Files Collector's Edition: S8 Mulder Resurrects to a Miracle
Thanks for @goodshipsmulder for the suggestion~.
Mulder finds out about Scully's pregnancy off-screen between Deadalive and Three Words. What was said? How might that have gone down? These ideas are explored in these fics (and a few extras thrown in because.)
Loose chronological order below~
@agentwhalesong/sadandangstyagent’s (Ao3) Could It Be Any Harder? - Chapter 4
""He doesn’t seem to understand anything, so he just stays there, accepting the love that is pouring out of her.""
Post Deadalive Mulder's groggy questions aren't able to be fully answered before he drifts back to sleep.
Agent L's (mulderscreek)
Duet
""Scully...?"
"Yes, Mulder?"
"Will I be able to play the piano again?"
"Well, Mulder, I...You don't play piano.""
Post Deadalive Mulder hasn't felt the effects of PTSD yet, cracking jokes and willingly reaching to feel his child move.
Wish List
""I want my life back. Sounds selfish for a guy just raised from the dead, I know, but I've never been one to be satisfied with the status quo.""
Post Deadalive Mulder's impatience-- itching to leave and itching for answers-- is soothed by the balm of Scully's presence.
@lyndsaybones’s (Ao3) Oh
""Like a breath. Like a secret wound opening up. He pulls his hand away.""
Post Deadalive Mulder responds to Scully's announcement with an "Oh."
@leiascully's (Ao3) Part of Us (Tumblr)
""He raises her hand to his lips. It’s an effort, but he manages. “I’m here and I’m staying,” he tells her. “What happened while I was gone?""
Post Deadalive Mulder responds to Scully's announcement with an "Oh", take two.
@msrafterdark (Ao3)
Five Sentence Fics (Tumblr Prompt) - Chapter 2
""She was mute for a moment, and while he easily recognized the softness in her eyes, he also noted a slight glimmer of impatience, as though she was insulted by his not believing this miracle belonged to him.""
Post Deadalive Mulder is shocked with the baby's paternity confirmation.
XScribe/Red's (Gossamer, spookyawards_archivist) Alive
""He looked up, confusion and yet a sense of incredible wonderment lighting up his beautiful hazel eyes. He looked at her and she didn't say a word. He shook his head, looked away, looked back at her again. She smiled, and a hot tear fell down her cheek before she could stop it. He reached out and caught it with a finger.
"Scully?" His voice was small, almost boylike, fearful yet hopeful.""
Post Deadalive Mulder wakes, surprised and grateful Scully didn't leave. Both of them tear up at her paternity confirmation.
ScullyLikesScience's He is the Master of His Fate, She is the Captain of Her Soul - Chapter 85
""They stared at each other. Mulder counted backwards in his head. Scully hoped for some kind of positive reaction. They were still silently gazing at one another when the door opened, and Mulder’s physician, Dr. Nelson Lim, entered the room to go over some test results.""
The events of Deadalive unfold, which eventually leads to Mulder waking a second time to a whirlwind of confusion... and it all becomes too much.
@scullys-right-eyebrow-txf/ScullysRightEyebrow's The Only Choice - Chapter 40
""Just as a soft smile appeared on his face, Mulder recognized apprehension in her eyes. His brow furrowed in concern and then he took in her appearance. In that moment every thought in his mind melded into a mass of bewilderment and confusion. He didn’t understand. He didn’t understand anything and the fear brought about by his nightmare seemed to crash down on him.""
Post Deadalive Skinner lets the news slip to Mulder; and his death and resurrection and Scully's sudden pregnancy catapult Mulder's PTSD, beginning the cycle of distancing himself.
@alldolleduppink-blog/AllDolledUpPink's Reditum
""I ran every test," she assures him. "I know it's hard to believe, but you are-"
"No," he interrupts her with a shake of his head. "No, I didn't- I wasn't implying that it's not mine. I- why did I leave?""
Post Deadalive Mulder has an immediate and severe PTSD-induced panic attack at the news of his baby; and begins to distance himself from Scully and their child-- terrified he will hurt them both.
Shoshana's
Skin Deep
""Is this real?' Mulder had asked, not certain what to say. Her affirmative response brought a grin to his ashen face, a sparkle to his tired eyes.""
Post Deadalive Mulder is happy about his baby, more worried about what Scully thinks about his scars than her miraculous pregnancy.
After Dinner
""Her unworried countenance told him all he needed to know, all he cared to know at the time.
He'd had worries later, when left alone with his thoughts....
When he was feeling particularly morose one night he imagined she wouldn't need his help at all with the child. That she was humoring him now while he was ill and would be ready to move on once he'd recovered.""
Three Words Mulder and Scully are okay after TLG leave her apartment; and he muses over his worries as they banter their way back to a reestablished relationship.
emmbright/Emma Brightman's (LiveJournal) Low Tide
"""You're really here." She walks toward him, carefully lowering her bulk into the chair and grasping his gray-skinned hand in hers. Her voice holds a note of wonder he's rarely heard before. Invisible men, visions in Buddhist temples, resurrected lovers -- Scully's a tough one to impress.""
Post Deadalive Mulder wakes from a fruitless nightmare of his sister, wanting no visitors but Scully as he plunges back into more.
dee_ayy's Burdened
""It had to be a lie, I decided once they'd left in search of help. A cruel joke.... Maybe Scully hadn't been lying, I had been in a coma, and this woman saying "dead and buried" was some sort of euphemism I wasn't familiar with. It couldn't be literally true, I decided. It just couldn't. It was the only rational explanation that would allow this threat to pass.
And I'd almost managed to convince myself by the time Scully came back.""
Post Deadalive Mulder overhears nurses talking about his resurrection; and the stress of that lie and Scully's pregnancy paralyzes him into numbness... until he sees his apartment.
Erin Blair/Erin M. Blair's Mine
""You know?"
I nodded, looking at her round belly. "I'm very observant, Scully.""
Post Deadalive Mulder tells Scully about the boy in his Amor Fati dream.
greycoupon’s (Ao3, WBM) Baring Fruit
""He was focused on Scully’s face and her hand in his, but not the rest of her. She was just another body in the room. Then one of the nurses asked her to move so they could check his blood pressure and she stood up. He saw all of her.
He saw her very pregnant stomach. For just a minute he couldn’t see or hear and worried he was back on the ship, that this was all a dream.""
Post Deadalive Mulder's eyes adjust enough to notice the obvious; and Scully lays his immediate fears to rest.
ML/ML_is_me’s (Ao3, Gossamer, DW, Invidiosa)
Do You Know?
""Come on, Scully, give me a break. Don't keep me in suspense," I rasp. You're smiling a little more broadly now.
"Well, you asked for it," you tell me, and push away from the bed to stand up awkwardly.""
Post Deadalive Mulder hates that he kept his brain disease a secret; but is so happy when Scully tells him about their baby.
Found Faith and Lost Time
""She's carrying a cardboard box in front of her, perhaps hoping to obscure her burgeoning belly for a few moments longer.
I give her a big smile as she catches my eye. "Hi, Mom," I greet her.
She looks a little crestfallen. "You KNOW? Did you know last night?" she asks me.""
Post Deadalive Skinner keeps vigil by goofily happy Mulder's bedside-- who peeked at Scully before anyone knew he was awake and is endlessly pleased with himself about it.
David Hearne's Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here
""So, Mulder," Langly interrupted. "this is...what?...your third resurrection?"
"Actually, it's my second. Technically."
"Whatever," Frohike said.""
A post Deadalive crackish experience-- TLG and Maggie and Skinner descend upon Mulder and Scully before they can thoroughly talk about their baby, having a grand time and letting him tell off Krycek on the phone.
Donna’s (Gossamer, mulderscreek) Meeting the Other Man
""His lips moved, but no sound emerged. His eyes returned to her stomach. Her hand came up and smoothed the fabric of her maternity top.
"It's not very subtle is it?""
AU-- Post Deadalive Doggett gets Scully to rest and meets Mulder in the hospital. Jealousy is soothed; and Mulder is overjoyed at the baby news.
Far Away, So Close
""The morning after his revival, Mulder woke up not long after Scully. He looked up at her as she stood and stretched by his bedside. He focused first on her face and then drifted lower. Scully could practically see his pupils dilate as they rested on her belly. He said nothing, however, and then the doctors came in, and the poking and prodding and questions began again.""
Three Words Mulder doesn't feel like a hero-- only a very distantly confused left behind. Scully finally tells him about the paternity later.
@admiralty-xfd’s (Ao3) Culmination - Chapter 12
""They stay together like that for a long time, holding each other. Eventually she gets up to check his vitals and the sight of her enormous pregnant belly hits him like a ton of bricks.
How…?
...The machines are going wild and Scully looks panicked. “Mulder?! What’s wrong?” The last thing he sees is her screaming for assistance and a team rushing in to help as the darkness takes him.""
Post Deadalive Mulder is afraid it's all a dream, that his brain disease will kill him, and that the baby isn't his.
theficisoutthere/pen-paper-aliens/PPA 's
post-"deadalive" I NEED to…
""His thoughts were interrupted by a soft twitch near his thigh. It was an odd twitch, more forceful than a shiver, but softer than a hit. Something was kicking against him.""
Mulder's reestablishing relationship is put on pause when he misconstrues Scully's pregnancy as replacement.
44. Puh-lease! ❤️ (Tumblr)
""He didn’t even question her fidelity. As soon as he noticed her bump in the hospital room he softly smiled and said, “So, we’re going to have a baby.” and squeezed her hand when she nodded. He turned his gaze back to the TV above them and the subject was never brought up again.""
Three Words Mulder hasn't mentioned the baby since the hospital until, finally, he and Scully open up about their fears and pain, crying it out together.
Marguerite’s (Ao3) Always Through the Changing
""Mulder's eyes were huge, with an odd shimmer, but he said nothing as he took the offered sip of water. He kept the cool liquid in his mouth for a moment as if savoring a fine wine. When he swallowed, it was the only sound in the room....
"Whoa, Scully. You been eating all my jello?""
Post Deadalive Mulder struggles with jealousy and anger-guilt-depression about Scully's baby as well as Skinner and Doggett's capable and active presence in his absence.
Lapsed_Scholar’s That Day Is Done
""Most people have nine months to come to terms with their impending parenthood, but he already has something of an unusual situation, and he really wishes he had not started the clock missing and dead. How is he supposed to prepare for this? How is he supposed to support her, or care for an entirely new, helpless person when he’s lost the ability to function as himself?""
Mulder, Scully, and Skinner navigate the rough waters of This Is Not Happening, Deadalive, and Three Words.
Diana Alexander’s Distant and Strange
""If he had been told eight years ago that he would be as protective and possessive as he was of her now, he would have thought the idea insane and preposterous besides. Somehow over the years, it had slowly started happening, so that now he couldn't imagine being any other way in regards to her.
At about that time, he was startled out of his own thoughts by a gentle knock on the door before it was pushed open by an extremely pregnant Dana Scully.""
Post Three Words Mulder has false memories of Scully and their baby, struggling to know what was and wasn't real.
@greekowl87’s (Ao3) Fic: Right Where You Belong (Ao3)
""Ever since he woke up in the hospital from his abduction, Mulder stared at the world through a looking glass. He recognized people, places, things, but inevitably, it wasn’t the same thing that he had left months before. So Scully was patient. She visited him every day, brought him new clothes, sneaked in his favorite food so he didn’t have to eat the bland hospital food, and anything to get him to respond to her. Mulder would just smile politely, maybe glance briefly her pregnant abdomen and turn away before she could get a word in.""
Three Words Scully grounds Mulder in reality.

""It takes effort, but he does move, sliding to the other side. The corners of Scully's mouth lifts, just a little, and she stands to climb in behind him. And that's when he sees it: the curve of her belly under her sweater.
Anything he wanted to say catches in his throat, freezes there. She is pregnant.""
Post Deadalive Mulder wakes, shocked at Scully's baby. Life moves too quickly for him to process, let alone sink back into. Fortunately, he and Scully are able to iron out the kinks later.
Unnamed (Alt. Tumblr)
""She tries to tell him early the morning after their reunion, but she can tell he’s already noticed. He’s quieter, won’t meet her eyes. “Mulder, I got my miracle,” she tries, immediately regretting the singular pronoun. She slips her fingers through his, and lifts his heavy hand to press against her abdomen.
“I’m happy for you,” he says, almost devoid of any emotion, and that’s when she feels like she’s lost him again.""
AU-- Scully moved into Mulder's apartment after his death; and can't figure out a way to tell him after he's resurrected.
And Extra Fics I Thought Belonged Here
@settle-down-frohike's (Ao3) Sensory Integration (Tumblr)
""He’s grateful for her restraint, because he can’t handle sudden movements right now. If she were to approach too fast in his direction, he’d end up curled in the fetal position somewhere in a corner, protecting his vital organs. He doesn’t know how he knows this, he just does. He’s like one giant Pavlovian experiment.
Stimulus.
Response.
Repeat.""
Mulder's PTSD starts to ramp up throughout Three Words; but Scully is, as always, there to be his constant in an upside down world.
soverysesual's Kleptomania - Chapter 1
""Uh, Scully, where are all my clothes?”
She could feel her cheeks burn as she realized that she had never brought them back from her apartment.""
Three Words Mulder and Scully have to retrieve some of his things from her apartment; and he is touched she found and utilized his former IVF baby stash.
Michelle Kiefer's Second Wind
""I wonder if Lazarus found reanimation a chilling experience. Did he shiver and pull his burial shroud closer around him? Was he chilled to the core despite Judah's hot sun? Unfortunately, I have no one with whom to compare notes, as old Lazarus is no longer among the living.
Besides, Lazarus was in the tomb, for what-four days? I could do four days standing on my head. Try three months, buddy, and we'll talk.""
Mulder feels the coldness of death always lingering; but finally finds a personalized heater (and pillar of strength) in Scully.
@amplifyme/wonderland/Lydia Bower's Light Don't Sleep
""Ah, Scully," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "We got our miracle, didn't we?"
Her breath caught and she faltered as the tears fell. "Yes... yes, we did."
Mulder and Scully slot themselves back together as he sorts through what are and aren't his true memories, one loving interaction at a time. And, of course, every good day must end with a bedtime story.
Thank you for reading~
Enjoy!

The Fourth Annual Davey Awards - The Nominees!
Hello! Every year I hold the annual Davey Awards for brilliance in motion pictures that move. This is our fourth year, and it promises to be one that is a year. Let's get to the nominees. Tornabuoni Arte"
Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla, Gino Severini, Giorgio de Chirico, Carlo Carrà, Amedeo Modigliani, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, per l'Arte contemporanea : Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Cy Twombly, Anselm Kiefer, Francesco Clemente, Mimmo Paladino, Enzo Cucchi, Sandro Chia, Mario Schifano, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni

Roxann Poppe Leibenhaut (American, b.1952) is a representational artist known for her en plein air paintings of beach scenes and small-town life. She was primarily Influenced by the 1970s. Conceptualism is often perceived as a reaction to Minimalism, and the leading art movement of the 1970s, challenging the boundaries of art with its revolutionary features. The movements that succeeded were all characteristic of a strong desire to evolve and strengthen the art world, in response to the tensions of the previous 1960s.
Process art branched out from Conceptualism, highlighting some of its most essential aspects, but going further in creating mysterious and experimental artistic journeys, while Land Art brought creation to the outsides, initiating early ideas of environmentalism. In Germany, Expressive figure painting was given another chance for the first time since the weakening of Abstract Expressionism almost twenty years ago, the genre regained its prominence through the brushstrokes of Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz. Most of the critically acclaimed artists from the 1960s, who had gained success and popularity, kept their status in the 1970s. Andy Warhol was a key figure of those two decades, and in the 1970s started to experiment with film and magazine publishing, thus engaging in a cross-cultural activity that no other visual artist of such standard had previously undertaken. By doing so, he secured his status as a celebrity. The multicultural and refined position that New York city held in the 1960s remained just as influential in the 1970s. With multiple world renowned artists gravitating the galleries and downtown scene, the city once again strengthened its reputation as the artistic heart of the generation. Street art started to appear as a true and accepted form of art towards the end of the 1970s. Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring were pioneers in proving that their artworks could subsist at the same time in art galleries and on city walls. Driven by graffiti art, street art from its earliest days showed that it could endure in a unceasing flux of self-transformation, endlessly shifting the boundaries of modern art, becoming a truly ground-breaking artistic genre. All over, various movements defined the 1970s. Amongst others, feminism and the new radical philosophies it occasioned strongly influenced the visual culture. Photorealism, which had emerged in the 1960s, also gained critical and commercial success. The critical, prominent artistic pillars of New York city started to embrace painters and sculptors from Latin America. The Arte Povera movement, which appeared in Italy, received international acknowledgement in the 1970s, and leading figures such as Jannis Kounnelis, Mario Merz, and Michelangelo Pistoletto were praised. The critically engaged Mono-Ha movement, comprised of Japanese and Korean artists, flourished in Tokyo in the 1970s. Discarding traditional ideas of representation, the artists favoured a depiction of the world through an engagement with materials and an exploration of their properties. The artworks would often consist of encounters between natural and industrial materials such as stone, glass, cotton, sponge, wood, oil and water, mostly left intact.
