A maidenhair fern somehow grew up in the pot with my holiday cactus and it looks pretty nice.

Despite its small size, Valley Falls State Park is a real treasure. Most people who visit the park come for the falls on the Tygart Valley River and completely ignore the beautiful trails. The Rhododendron and Glady Creek Trails wind through some lovely old cove forest anchored by impressive boulder fields smothered in moss. It has that LOTR thing going, especially along some of the more secluded sections of Glady Creek, culminating in an enchanting, multi-tiered waterfall draped in rhododendron. This time of the year, the mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) and ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) are in bloom (I can't decide which is lovelier) and the fungi and ferns dominate the forest floor, now that the canopy has closed over. The American royal fern (Osmunda spectabilis), which grows in the nooks and crannies of the giant boulders at the edge of the river, is a personal favorite of mine.

Plant of the Day
Thursday 26 September 2024
Growing in a churchyard wall was this small, evergreen fern Asplenium trichomanes (maidenhair spleenwort, common spleenwort, English maidenhair, green spleenwort, waterwort). This plants has creeping rhizomes and forms a rosette of blackish-stemmed fronds. It has a huge native distribution, including Europe, Asia, North America, Central and South America. A number of sub-species exist, each suited to the varying growing conditions.

Y'all ever have little clusters of miscellaneous pics you take that don't really fit anywhere but bring so much joy for the little dense ecosystems and little features of nature and stuff bc I have so many of these and the joy they bring me is ridiculous

3 years ago today I visited some cliffs along the Lehigh River. Water seeped and dripped from them constantly and the were covered with a wonderful mix of mosses, lichens, liverworts and other native plants.

A few photos from a late afternoon bike ride on the Mon River Trail yesterday. The smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens), also known as sevenbark, and purple-flowering raspberry (Rubus odoratus) are at peak bloom. These companion shrubs form dense colonies on the steep, shady slopes of the river and keep the area's pollinators busy until the arrival of the summer milkweeds. Among the late spring wildflowers currently in bloom are foxglove beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis), whorled loosestrife (Lysimachia quadrifolia), and the ever-gorgeous butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa), the earliest milkweed to bloom in this area and a harbinger of summer's impending arrival. My favorite fern, the northern maidenhair (Adiantum pedatum), resplendent in fanning tiers of deep green fronds, also loves the cool, damp slopes along the river.

Plant of the Day
Wednesday 15 May 2024
Native to China and the Himalayas Adiantum venustum (evergreen maidenhair fern, Himalayan maidenhair fern) is a deciduous fern but usually remains evergreen to -10 °C when it will be deciduous. This plant needs a moist environment with soil containing a large amount of humus.

Columbo S10E13 “Murder with Too Many Notes” (2001)
Maidenhair fern spotted at 1:04:22! With, I think, some kind of rex begonia in the foreground? (Also, yes, this episode is another Patrick McGoohan joint, though he does not star in it.)

Bonus plant #1: this snake plant.
Tumblr media
Bonus plant #2: these fake weeping figs. Not sure why these trees had such a grip on interior designers from the late 80s to the early aughts, but they sure did!
Tumblr media
This is the penultimate Columbo episode I have to review. Start getting ready to say goodbye.
