Y'all ever have little clusters of miscellaneous pics you take that don't really fit anywhere but bring so much joy for the little dense ecosystems and little features of nature and stuff bc I have so many of these and the joy they bring me is ridiculous

Columbo S7E2 “Murder Under Glass” (1978)
Fern spotted at 24:46! I am not sure what kind of fern it is, though. Looks like a common polypody, but that seems like an odd choice.

Maybe it's a Boston fern...this one a few shots later definitely is, thus providing us another ultimate combo!

Bonus: a close-up on this awful and inimitably 1970s aspic situation. This episode is all about fine dining, and yes, this spread is supposed to be the height of elegance. Gag.

I thought of you yesterday because I saw fern growing on a tree (not a stump on the ground, an actual upright tree !!) and I didn't know it was possible ! Granted the tree was covered in moss, which might explain it, but still, how awesome !!! (in the Trossachs park, Scotland).

YES I LOVE THESE
This is polypody fern! Or Polypodium vulgare if you want to be formal. It loves loves LOVES misty and moist environments, so Scotland and Wales have shit tons of the stuff, especially into the rainforests. Fun thing: it's super adaptable in growth sites, so it can be either a lithophyte (growing on rocks) or an epiphyte (growing on trees). And it doesn't care where on the tree it is, either. It works with what it's got.
The rhizome is edible, and was traditionally used in nougat flavourings because of its bittersweet flavour - I remember reading somewhere that the compound that gives the sweetness is 500 times sweeter than pure sugar, if you can extract it. It's also a laxative though, so you win some you lose some (literally)
Such a cool plant though. You were right to bring this to me. I love them.

Some stuff near the Menai Straits today.
A fungus of some sort on dead wood, possibly Stereum hirsutum. Gorgeous epiphytic fern, common polypody (Polypodium vulgare) on oak branches. Some sort of fancy red elf cup fungus.

Plant of the Day
Thursday 9 February 2023
In this tropical glasshouse the striking blue-green Phlebodium 'Davana' (golden polypody, blue star fern) is thriving in the partial shade and humid atmosphere. This fern is a native to the Caribbean, as well as Central and South America. It has become a popular houseplant.
