It was lovely to finally see Stephen Soucy’s Merchant Ivory documentary on the big screen at BFI Flare 2024 this afternoon, and the stars/crew/Merchant Ivory family were out in force. Guess who:

(1) looked startlingly younger in person that they do in the documentary (or they have a lookalike)

(2) was spotted popping in and out of the screening, and in and out of the hospitality room for beers

Also spotted: costume-design legend Jenny Beavan, Adrian Ross Magenty (Tibby Schlegel/deleted Dickie Barry) and Rupert sitting next to (looked like) A Room With A View’s cinematographer Tony Pierce-Roberts.

Despite its exciting gay Marxist reputation, Another Country is actually surprisingly silly and boring. The one interesting couple are Fowler (Tristan Oliver) and Wharton (Adrian Ross Magenty). We never actually see them fuck, of course, but the boot-cleaning scene (here at 56:50) is the only part of the film with even the slightest hint of human affection about it - let alone bona fide homoeroticism.

Biography

Barely old enough to hold onto memories of his father when the man went out to 'buy some cigarettes' late one night, Callum grew up with just his mother looking out for him for most of his life, a woman that sometimes had to work two jobs to pay the bills and who always did her best even if it meant Cal was left on his own a lot growing up. Daycare was expensive and his aunt had her own job to do, not capable of dropping everything to pick up her nephew so he wasn't home alone. He knew the rules. Keep hold of your house key. Let yourself in, check all the doors and windows. Hide somewhere and do your homework. Keep a knife with you.

He knew the rules, but didn't often follow them. Instead of homework, he'd sometimes do odd jobs for the neighbors and try to make extra money so his mom didn't need to work so hard. Then he got older and he got braver, more rebellious. Old enough that people didn't question what he was doing on the bus alone and once he was away from the neighborhood of people that knew him, Cal started taking more risks to make money, and sometimes those risks ended up with the cops called.

His mama tried her best, Cal would never tell anyone otherwise, and Cal did his best as well and would spit on anyone that didn't understand that.

It all crashed when she died not long after he turned twenty, and to no one's surprise, the funeral ate up their savings until their was nothing left. Her loss opened up a gaping hole inside Cal and sucked inside of it their entire lives together. The modest little house he grew up in was sold, and Cal ditched his roommates in order to take off on his motorcycle, leaving home behind without any inclination of just where he would go next. He did that for years, traveling around from state to state, trying to start over and always falling back into trouble, trying to find a sense of peace only to feel an itch under his skin.

He showed up in Antioch eventually because it had a reputation worse than him, it seemed like a town made up of bad luck and ill fortune and finally he slotted in there, a place where misdeeds were the norm. He fit in, found a job, and then found the band. It wasn't the life his mom would have wanted for him, but it was a life outside of a prison cell, so Callum thought he was doing pretty good and didn't see the point in asking for more.

Because that's all life had turned into for him. Surviving. No real goals, no real aspirations, just a handful of dreams covered in dirt that he didn't believe in anymore, and emotion without a targeted direction.

top left: Cassidy Verge - close friend of vertigo, kind of the pathetic lovable dork of this thing. also a huge gamer nerd and very ADHD. often fluctuates between genius and idiot. usually goes by cass.

top right: Charlotte Magenti - absolute energetic ball of sunshine, but oddly enough, can be pretty unruly and aggressive. will fight a bitch on instinct. she will gladly participate in rebellious activity if offered; sometimes causes rebellion on her own.

bottom left: Fenton Fangnail - chill stoner dude; he and charlotte are cousins. very low-key to complement charlotte's high energy, but also loves some good thrash metal and anarchy. also a bit of a klutz.

Kia K5? I'm assuming you mean the car that is internationally called that, since the first four gens of the K5 were called Optima and Magentis in the west but that's a crazy new model. god damn.

well, I have not many thoughts, because I hadn't known about this car until you got me to look it up and I in general disregard Kia as worth my attention over most car brands but I have to at least agree that

this thing looks awesome! I like it. very nice, pleasing shape, especially the front. I have no idea how it must drive, but I like it! it's quite cute. I generally prefer sedans over anything else tbh (also this thing apparently weighs a ton and a half? is that normal for modern sedans?? our minivan is around 300kg lighter than that)

Cape Breton Woman's disappearance now considered a homicide family wants answers

April 2017 was the last time 59-year-old Debbie Hutchinson was seen alive. Her family has been searching for answers about her disappearance ever since.

“It's been a long six years. It's not nice. You think about it every time the anniversary comes around and think of it more,” said John Hutchinson, Debbie’s brother.

For six years police have considered Hutchinson's disappearance as a missing person’s case, but now they're calling it a homicide.

Her car, a 2005 white Kia Magentis, was found burned out in a wooded area not far from Hutchinson's home.

“I wasn't shocked for them to come out and say that because all along I was thinking this is a homicide,” said Hutchinson,

But police are saying very little about their investigation.

“I can't speak to specifics, I don't want to jeopardize the investigation, but information we received from investigators have deemed it a homicide at this time,” said Cape Breton Regional Police Staff Sergeant Joe Farrell.

Police also released photos of vehicles captured on surveillance video on Cossitt Heights Drive on the same day Hutchinson's vehicle was last seen.

One driver has come forward, but police are hoping to speak with the others.

“As a result of the media release yesterday, one of the owners of the vehicles came forward right away, and investigators are going to follow up with that person,” said Farrell.

Debbie Hutchinson’s family just wants closure.

“We would just like to have it end and get back to a life that is normal again,” said John

Police say an application has been made to the provincial awards program in hopes it will help solve their investigation.
