I find it entertaining that in the Luigi's Mansion series, there's a recurring trend of having a piano playing ghost.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there's also the trend of the ghost who's actually not a threat to Luigi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there's the trend of having a boss who's just annoying and hard AF.

Inktober: Day 5
Madame Clairvoya! I feel like a lot of people are Clairvoya fans but at the same time nobody really talks about her. Weird.

Ya like Luigi's Mansion? NAME EVERY LUIGI!!
So this was a small postcard print I drew about Madame Clairvoya, and I also designed a whole set of Mario's Lost Items stickers that fit in her crystal ball!

madame clairvoya when she was alive. maybe. found footage?
the textures in luigi's mansion showing photographs of the portrait ghosts when they were alive have always fascinated me. i'd like to draw more of that type of thing in the future.

Pondering the Orb I've been in a huge Luigi's Mansion mood, so here's my first ever drawing of Madame Clairvoya! Luigi's Mansion is property of Nintendo, the art is mine (please don't use my work without my permission- thanks!)

Luigi! How about you ask that old psychic lady with the evil eye who reads fortunes and knows everything how this is going to go?
Oh, uhm, well...
[Luigi nervously glances at King Boo]
Let me ask King Boo...
[He cautiously approaches King Boo]
Hey, King Boo? Is Madame Clairvoya still around?
[King Boo turns to Luigi, raising an eyebrow and squinting as he tries to remember. After a moment, his expression brightens as he recalls.]
Oh yeah, Ms. "OoOOo, I see your future, you're gonna get hit by a truck!11"
Yeah, she's still around. Why? You gotta ask, "OOoo, Madame, what's my future? OOooO"? Though, I think she'll only help or answer if someone disappears...

If you were to choose, who is your favorite ghost from all lm franchise?
oh boy this one is tough! I hate picking just one. I have only personally played Luigi's Mansion 3 so I don't know much about the 1st two unfortunately.
i think it would be Dr.Potter, Madame Clairvoya or DJ Phantasmagloria.
Dr.Potter has a really nice area to play in with all the leaves and grass filling the place up. and his design, although basic, really gets the vibe of a science teacher (he reminds me of my old science teacher as well so I'm a bit biased). he also has a cool plant as well :)
Madame Clairvoya is the first nice ghost to Luigi I think so bonus points for that. her design is beautiful to me and her mechanic in the game is a really nice change of pace.
Finally, DJ Phantasmagoria. who doesn't love her? the music is great and the area is really funky and her fight is fun!
i could 100% go into more detail about these three but i dont want to make this post too long just yet. i hope this answer you question!

Also, I was gifted Luigi's Mansion on the 3DS for my birthday, so I've been playing it.
And may I say, WOW it's so different from Dark Moon!
When players say that they're different they really meant it didn't they?!
The controls are different, if slightly clunky.
I have slightly gotten used to it but darn.
MINOR THINGS I don't like:
Making the move furniture button the same as the call Mario button wasn't the best idea. I keep accidentally calling for Mario.
There's no running button. In dark moon, B was the button, but here it doesn't exist, so I still don't know where to put my thumb at when moving Luigi. (I was always running in Dark Moon)
I didn't have the key to connect upstairs past Biff Atlas's room for the longest time. So I had to keep going around through the courtyard for a while. (You have no idea how happy I was when I found the key)
Other than those super minor stuff, I really like the game.
THINGS I like about the game:
The mansion is really cool looking. It's like Gloomy Manor 2.0.
The cutscenes of the exterior of the mansion (its an aesthetic)
The gallery
I love how Luigi hums to the music.
BTW the theme is good. I love it on piano
The graveyard is such an aesthetic.
The Boolossus fight has really cool music (it's my favorite track)
The portrait ghosts are cool and fun
The Gameboy Horror is cool ( but the Dual Scream ringtone is my favorite)
They used King Boo’s Dark Moon design
Slim Bankshot and Madame Clairvoya are my favorite portrait ghosts. Slim has the best name, and Clairavoya's abilities are cool.
Overall, I really like this game. I'm trying my best to get a decent rank, let's see how that goes.

Definitely seems to check out. The similarity of name to Merloo is also interesting. I wonder what the break in Merloo's name that he has but Madame Clairvoya doesn't is supposed to mean, though...
Is it possible that Madame Clairvoya from Luigi’s Mansion is actually a Shaman from Super Mario RPG?
I’m sure many of you are familiar with the Shamans from Super Mario RPG, which went on to play a major role in Paper Mario, Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario. These odd folk are are depicted as magicians and fortune tellers. Many use Crystal Balls to predict the future and guide Mario on his adventures, usually by reading the Stars.
In Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, we received some elaboration on who these Shamans are:
About Merlon on the east side of Rogueport and Merluvlee underground... Ol' Wonky hears they're from a strange tribe that names people by profession. So, for example, if someone did the same work as Merlon, they'd have the same name... So there could be Merlons all over. Don't you find that strange? Wonky does!
[Source: Wonky, Info guy, Non-player character in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, October 2004]
Meanwhile in Super Paper Mario, Shamans became the focus of the game, where they are revealed to be the descendants of the Tribe of Ancients, a people who had magic powerful enough to predict the distant future and transfer spirits of the dead into “Thinking Tools” called Pixls.
So yeah, ever heard of an advanced civilization called the Tribe of Ancients? They were, like, a thousand times smarter than you or me.
[Source: Garson, Owner of The Underwhere, Non-player character in Super Paper Mario, April 2007]
So yeah, you meet Merlon and Merlee yet? They're descendants of the Ancients and distantly related to each other, I hear.
[Source: Garson, Owner of The Underwhere, Non-player character in Super Paper Mario, April 2007]
So do you know how the Pixls came to be? A powerful magician among the Ancients created them about 3,000 years ago. He did it by transferring a spirit into a vessel he created for that purpose. He's said to have created 12 Pixls like this before he passed away. But his apprentices kept researching Pixls after his game ended... They learned to create many more Pixls based on his original 12. These Pixls became widely used as 'thinking tools' for the grateful Ancients. Through the work of many Pixls, the Ancients prospered as they never had before.
[Source: Carson, Owner of The Overthere, Non-player character in Super Paper Mario, April 2007]
In Luigi’s Mansion, Madame Clairvoya is a fortune teller who uses a Crystal Ball to read Mario’s items and guide Luigi. Her senses from reading the Crystal Ball are incredibly similar to those of the Shamans, with both seeing locations and people from the present or near future within their Crystal Balls and interpreting what they see into advice for the heroes. It’s also stated that Madame Clairvoya can see nearly 49 days into the future thanks to her close connection to the spirit world.
Tumblr media
Madame Clairvoya actually wears similar clothing to many Shamans, particularly Shaman women, such as long robes, a headscarf and a veil covering her mouth. While the Shamans have largely been covered by shadows throughout their appearances thanks to their outfits, they are described as humans several times in Super Paper Mario, which aligns with Madame Clairvoya’s clearly human appearance.
Tumblr media
Madame Merlar from Paper Mario and Merlumina from Super Paper Mario both return as ghosts long after their deaths and continue to serve as helpful guides, as is the case with Madame Clairvoya.
Tumblr media
Madame Clairvoya also describes the Crystal Ball she uses as a "symbol of [her] clan”. This clan could very well be the Tribe of Ancients, whose descendants are shown to consistently use Crystal Balls to perform their work.
Tumblr media
Finally - and this is what really got me to consider this possibility in the first place - the Japanese name of every member of the Tribe of Ancients and their descendants follows the same naming conventions, with all of their names being a play-on-words with the addition of the endings "ēru", "āru" or simply "ru", originating from the Japanese name of the Shaman species in Super Mario RPG, "Supēru". This also applies to Madame Clairvoya, whose Japanese name is “Madamu Miēru”.
Tumblr media
What do you guys think? Could Madame Clairvoya actually be a descendant of the Ancients? If so, this is certainly a very interesting connection from Luigi’s Mansion back to Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario, though it wouldn’t be the first!

He's-a Gone
Luigi time! To suffer, that is.
(CW: character death)
Tumblr media
This is obviously a sort of comlementary piece to I Was-a Too Late. But it's more than just that as it also illustrates a certain fun, dark what-if idea I had. Please keep reading if you're intrigued!
Lore:
Luigi's Mansion, the first game. Everything goes the same as in canon until the final boss fight, when Luigi defeats King Boo in his Bowser costume. After King Boo comes out and Luigi intends to suck him in, the villain laughs and reveals the truth: Mario's painting was an illusion, so was everything Madame Clairvoya saw. All just to mess with Luigi. Meanwhile the real Mario wasn't just captured by the Boos, he was immediately killed by them on their King's orders. The only physical thing that's left of him in this realm is the five items Luigi found - hidden by the Boos for Luigi to find, another part of King Boo's sick game.
Luigi is able to finish the fight despite his shock and grief, fueled by the anger King Boo never expected from him. After getting out of the painting the plumber discovers that it is indeed empty, no Mario or anyone else in the portrait.
Heartbroken and guit-ridden, Luigi goes back to Professor E. Gadd's lab and gives him back the Poltergust 3000. He doesn't even want to stay long enough to see what is going to happen to the ghosts. Of course the Professor tries to offer some semblance of comfort, but we all know it's not his forte.
So Luigi leaves, only taking Mario's five items with him. He notices that the mansion has disapeared without a trace. The reality of it all finally hits him, and he practically collapses onto a nearby tree's large root protruding from the ground, putting down the precious items around himself, only leaving the matching red hat and the letter in his hands. He should have known something was off. After all, the Mario he saw in the painting was wearing his hat and both gloves.
Looking at all these items, to his growing horror he can't help but imagine what exactly might have happened to his brother and what his last moments might have been like. He hugs the hat to his chest and rereads Mario's note several times, knowing that the brief warning was his brother's last words to him.
Luigi can do nothing but cry for the beloved brother he couldn't save, desperately wishing it was his warm, living and breathing body pressed to his chest rather than just a couple of his belongings.
But Mario is truly gone, apparently having met such a horrific fate that not even a single part of his body is left in the physical world.
[Good night]
…I'll leave the rest up to your imagination ;) Sorry if I got carried away with my description. Occasionally even I enjoy being a little dramatic, though I'm no writer whatsoever.
Yeah, I'm not apologizing for making this one - I was nicer to Luigi than to his bro, at least here the Mushroom Kingdom and everyone in it (except for Mario lol) is still okay!
But alas,
You can no longer play as Mario
Rest in spaghetti, funny wahoo man.

Bowuigi fans, we don't tall enough about the angsty possibilities of this ship within the context of Luigi's Mansion, especially the first one.
It's strongly implied throughout the game that Bowser died in his last battle against Mario, with his "return" spelling bad news.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now it could just be bad news because Bowser is the bad guy and yada yada...
But here's an idea : imagine that Luigi was either pining for Bowser, or better yet, that they were in a relationship, which had to remain secret for obvious reasons.
Except Mario didn't know that, and at some point confronted Bowser, and...it didn't go well. I don't picture Mario as the kind of person who willingly kills, so it could have been a pure accident, a stroke of horrifying good luck during a battle. But all that matters now is that Bowser is gone.
And Luigi couldn't even mourn him properly, as in everyone's eyes Bowser was a horrible monster whose death was a blessing.
Then in this manor, already a dreadful place with Mario trapped in the middle of these ghosts, Luigi gets told about Bowser being back, revived by King Boo??
Madame Clairvoya could either be ignorant of Luigi's grief, and maybe that's what Luigi thinks as well...but what if she knew people "revived" by King Boo aren't really back, only horrible puppets or undead monsters. And she knows Luigi is the only one who would be happy about Bowser's return. She tries to warn him, but he doesn't listen, hope rising in his heart despite himself. Sure, Bowser won't be a big help for Mario's sake, but the most important is that he's alive again! Oh, Luigi can't wait to find him !! He missed him so much!
And then.
He gets his wish fulfilled in the most horrible way.
Tumblr media
Luigi finding himself facing what should be his lover, but is roaring and behaving exactly like an enemy, attacking him even. Has Bowser gone mad ? Does he think Luigi had a part in his death ? Or...what if all this time Luigi had been wrong. Fooled into believing Bowser was every bit the monster everyone saw. He refuses to believe it but he has to run and defend himself as Bowser mocks and attacks him...
...and then Bowser's head falls.
It wasn't Bowser. Just a corpse puppeteered by King Boo.
Luigi fights. Luigi wins. Luigi saves Mario.
And when he can finally relieve the stress of the night by laughing and crying all at once...
Tumblr media
...the tears aren't just for Mario.

Bowser Might Have Died Before Luigi's Mansion
There is an old hypothesis/Creepypasta that claims Bowser died at the end of Paper Mario 64 and was resurrected by King Boo or is King Boo. However, this is wrong for several reasons, but there is some truth to Bowser dying.
So first off Bowser didn't die in Paper Mario 64, and can be seen alive and well as I showed in a previous post. So people think he died in Super Mario 64 DS, however it is never stated to be the case in game and Bowser is defeated in the exact same way throughout the game so doesn't die in this game.
However, Bowser does die sometime before Luigi's Mansion. "How can this be?! I see the hideous form of Bowser!" "Is Bowser somewhere in this mansion? I cannot believe it.." "I though that Mario had soundly defeated Bowser!" "Has King Boo somehow revived Bowser?" Now this dialogue from Madame Clairvoya heavily implies Bowser had died in a previous fight with Mario sometime before Luigi's Mansion. But this isn't seen in any game and Madame Clairvoya may be mistaken. An additionally reason she would be mistaken is the Bowser in this game isn't actually Bowser, so she clearly doesn't have fully context. This would also mean King Boo did not revive Bowser or is Bowser himself obvious since there is just the one King Boo.
