Day 4: Bogmire's Shadow, from Luigi's Mansion

I've drawn Bogmire for Inktober before, so obviously I had to draw this completely different character instead.

Okay, I have an incredible theory about Luigi's Mansion:

and this guy

are the same person.

(Theory under the cut cuz it's a long one)

So first, some background (which is basically a whole other, much bigger theory in and of itself). The portrait ghosts are distinct from almost every other ghost in not just Luigi's Mansion, but the whole expanded Mario universe, in that they're just straight-up ghosts of a sapient species (yeah, I know that Eeries and Ghost Guys are a thing, but they feel different). They're also all ghosts that E. Gadd collected, which brings up an interesting issue. He collected them from all over the world, and the mansion they all (un)live in appeared out of nowhere a few days before the game, and yet most of them have clear or implied connections to each other and the mansion seems to have a lot of their personal histories built into it.

Here's what I think is the solution to that issue. Vincent van Gore can paint ghosts into being, and all the portrait ghosts are, well, portraits. I believe that all of them are paintings of people who lived in the mansion at one point, including van Gore, who is a self-portrait (when all of the ghosts he summons in his fight are defeated, he says that only one of his creations remains, which lends some credence to this).

(Just because E. Gadd has a machine that turns ghosts into portraits doesn't mean they weren't already portraits at one point- it's possible he made the portrait machine by reverse-engineering their portraits or something)

"But wait," you say, "wasn't the mansion just created out of nowhere, like you said?". However, one of the portrait ghosts, Shivers the butler, gives a possible reason for the mansion to need to be created out of nowhere when it was already a place that existed: it simply burned down, which may even be how Shivers, and possibly a few other portrait ghosts, died.

So now we get into the actual "Vincent van Gore is Bogmire" part. I believe that, due to a few pieces of evidence, such as a painting of a living van Gore being front and center in the Parlor, van Gore is most likely the original owner of the mansion. This means that there's a good chance that his spirit would linger around the mansion- but the Vincent van Gore you encounter in-game is a self-portrait, not his actual ghost, as stated above.

Bogmire has some possible ties to van Gore, though. His grave is the biggest and oldest-looking in the graveyard, fitting for the original owner of the mansion, but more so than that is the fact that he's stated to be "a product of the mansion's fear and despair". How exactly would a product of the mansion's fear and despair have a grave? It never even would have been alive!

Essentially, I believe that Bogmire is Vincent van Gore's actual ghost, who absorbed the fear and despair created by all the misfortune that befell the future inhabitants of the mansion and evolved into the Bogmire we know and love over time. Meanwhile, the self-portrait van Gore painted portraits of all those inhabitants, imbuing pieces of their spirits in them as the original van Gore had with him and keeping them alive after death, in a sense.

So TL;DR: Vincent van Gore is a self-portrait of the real guy, Bogmire is the real guy's actual ghost after absorbing a bunch of bad vibes.

A Halloween special I started earlier this year, but finished tonight.

Got bored, Drew Bogmire and an OC

I was bored, so I drew my favorite ghost from the first Luigi’s Mansion game, Bogmire, he kinda looks like a Creeper if it was gooier, I love this guy. Also the OC is an unnamed character of mine, she only has a title, “The Daughter of Shadows”, here she’s depicted as just a little child, past for her and her father!

I am pretty sure I can go on a long talk about Bogmire, I love this ghost so much, but I’ll leave that for another day, when I talk about my headcannon for Ghost Sub-Types, because that’s when I’ll talk about What I think Bogmire is.

“The Daughter of Shadows” is a hybrid ghost, half Portrait Ghost and half… well I can’t reveal it just yet, but it’s basically what her daddy is.

Why is it that when I am really damn bored that that’s when I get the motivation to actually draw shit and write these longer posts.

Luigi's Mansion for the Nintendo 3DS features a psychedelic moving background for the Chauncey, Bogmire and Boolossus boss battles that cannot be seen in full during gameplay due to always being partially obscured by the boss arena.

When isolated, it resembles battle backgrounds from Earthbound, also known for their slowly moving shapes and shifting colors.

Luigi’s Mansion Fan Ghost Sub-Type - The Shadow Creeper

Shadow Creepers are small, black ghosts, like the main type, Shadow Creepers are gooey ghosts that are usually on the ground, but unlike the main type, Shadow Creepers have wings that allow them flight, so long as they are healthy, unfortunately, due to ghost hunters, many Shadow Creepers are unwell and sickly due to being deemed a highly valuable variety of ghost, many have been injured by ghost hunters, which diminishes the “value” of these poor ghosts. These injured ghosts bear a striking resemblance to a unique individual called Bogmire, if I recall correctly. These ghosts are not trophies for vile ghost hunters to flaunt, they have feelings too, the ghost hunting makes them unable to fly, thus these small ghosts have to use other means to protect themselves, hence why some have used faux shadows of themselves to distract whoever is hunting them, I have been trying to nurse as many as I can back to health, but there’s so many, the ghost hunting must have been what caused Bogmire to look the way he does.

Shadow Creepers are a rare Sub-type of Creeper, weather they be rare naturally or by Ghost Hunters capturing as many as they can find, these little ghosts are friendly normally, but seem to be easily frightened by humans, most likely due to the over hunting of them, so I had to wear my disguise.

The disguise looks silly, but it works, ghosts trust me more when in this weird outfit.

there are some Shadow Creepers that aren’t scared and there are some that are flat out aggressive towards humans, those nasty ghost hunters have done way too much damage to these otherwise friendly ghost sub-type, making it hard for me and other true researchers to do our job.

Luigi's Mansion Head Canon - TW!!!!

When I was a kid I played the original Luigi's mansion more times than I can count. I came up with my own twisted headcanon as to how the portrait ghosts died.

Neville - After he finished an insanity driven murder spree, he read books on how to hide bodies and evade police capture. The stress have him a heart attack in his library

Lydia - Was depressed after Chauncy so kept herself locked in her room. Her twin sons kicked a ball through her window and the glass caused a fatal injury

Chauncy - Stillborn. His photo was a memento mori

The Floating Whirlindas - Murdered by ballroom competition, hanged

Shivers - Burned to death in a fire alive accidentally while trying to capture Melody

Melody - Got decapitated by piano after trying to run from Shivers

Mr. Luggs - Obesity related heart disease

Spooky - Neglect after Mr. Luggs died

Bogmire - A spectral manifestation of the fear and hatred of the mansion

Biff Atlas - Lifted too heavy with no spotter, died from asphyxiation

Miss Petunia - Slipped in the shower, died from head trauma

Nana - Died from old age related causes, but the body was not discovered for a month. People thought she was just sleepinh

Slim Bankshot - Misshot a billiards ball, it rebounded and struck him in the head, killing him

Henry and Orville - Caused the accident that killed Lydia. Neville murdered them by luring them with a game of hide and seek, and locking them inside tiny boxes

Madame Clairvoya - Attempted to warn Neville of impending doom before the deaths of Chauncy and Lydia. He angrily dismissed her. Was the last person to be Murdered by Neville for not being able to prevent those events from occurring.

Uncle Grimmly - Like Nana, died elderly, of age related cause. His body wasn't found because nobody cared about him.

Clockwork Soldiers - Non human beings brought to life like Pinoccio. Accidentally set alight when Shivers tried to get to Melody

Sue Pea - Murdered by Neville, her uncle. Was heavily abused as a child, hence the fear bed-wetting. Neville became infuriated when she couldn't stop bed-wetting and murdered her in her sleep

Jarvis - Was a potter, and Neville's brother. They quarrelled, and Neville smashed a large pot over his head, killing him

Sir Weston - Died on exposition. Although his ghost returned home, his mind never did.

Vincent Van Gore - Suicide
