Somewhere in a world without Voldemort, Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy became friends. Best friends, even. She’s the brains and he’s the charisma - they get pretty much whatever they want. Except the one thing both of them want the most (each other). They never date, no. They only wish for it in the aloneness of their own private dorms, imagining a world where their dreams were made to be true. Hermione thought about the stolen glances, his hand that reaches out to her that’s always filled with an assortment of Bertie’s jellybeans, and the way he snickers when she smart mouthed him. Draco’s mind would wander as he fell asleep, picturing Hermione holding her cat as she laughs at something he said, the way her hair flowed in the wind when they’d be up on the astronomy tower, and the one time they’d snuck out past curfew and her finger brushed his in the dark hallways of the castle.

But, it was all just wishful thinking. Wasn’t it?

at the funeral my 85 year old great-aunt asked to see a photo of my cat, and so I said “sure” and showed her this, and she just said “oh”, visibly struggled to follow that up with anything, and then walked away.
