British Columbia -- Loving will be releasing their new album Any Light on February 9 via Last Gang Records/MNRKI. This week, the duo (Jesse Henderson and David Parry) released the third single "No Mast." The shimmery track spans just about 3 minutes long and will have listeners in a warm tizzy. From the melodic strums of the guitar to the soft murmurs of the vocals, "No Mast" has a grounding sway that'll warm you up like hot cup of tea in the middle of winter. The song comes to us from Henderson's reading of James Hollis’ The Eden Project: In Search of the Magical Other. “I found this book all beat up and tucked under the couch in the studio,” explains Henderson. “It offers an insightful critique of romantic love and the psychological forces that shape the way we love, or fail to. I guess the song just stumbled along afterwards as kind of a reflection on it.”

UNDER THE RADAR: AUGUST 2023
Tumblr media
Happy Labour Day, Canada! There’s plenty summer left to enjoy our August Under The Radar picks from Isobel feat. Chris Clute, Rosemary Ginger, Tiger Really, Noble Oak, Frantic and Mikenna Hope, and Clara Cloud and Jeremy Lim.
1) Isobel featuring Chris Clute - “Good Guy”
There’s something so tender about the title track of Isobel’s debut album and her extension of the olive branch; I feel empathetic towards her. It’s one for the people pleasers who give too much, but receive little in return and whose efforts are for naught. Adaptability to suit others’ needs (and wants) comes at a personal cost—a loss of identity and oneself. You can hear a genuine care in her voice, leading with grace when her actions are not reciprocated.
It’s a surprising listen because Isobel also has the capability to be bold and rightfully bitter, but “Good Guy” revels in her maturity and understanding of putting herself first (“No ill intent, but I had to protect myself / Saying sorry, but I don’t know for what now / Being human, that’s all I wanna be now”). A collaboration with Chris Clute on guitar, the song is nuanced and gentle in how she reasons with herself and recognizes the scars left behind. The layered acoustic guitars create intimacy and also propel it forward. Isobel’s tone meshes perfectly with the guitars and subtle production, it comes off very natural and unforced.
“Good Guy” lives up to its name in hoping for resolve, even when it’s not warranted.

2) Rosemary Ginger - “Ocean in Between”
“While we’re apart you’ll vanish like stardust.”
Written by vocalist/keyboardist Adam Doucette while he was living abroad in Barcelona, “Ocean in Between” depicts the unease that time and distance can spur in close relationships. Its surf-pop guitar tones and swelling pianos complement the waters and cosmos referenced throughout the lyrics; a shimmer to a vastly negative, self-fulfilling prophecy. It builds in energy and anxiety until downcast, distortion-heavy chords replace Doucette’s vocals. Amy Tan provides the wistful harmonies and wailing punk release I didn’t expect, but wholeheartedly needed. “Ocean in Between” is indicative of the band’s immersive musicianship and songwriting. It is beachy but bittersweet, feeling future heartache in the now.

3) Tiger Really - “Dead Ringer”
"Dead Ringer” takes the ‘right person wrong time’ trope and provides a math rock accompaniment for those ill-fated, longing souls. Talks of antics and lingering feelings amidst a timeline that isn’t in our favour, the title calls to their visual inspiration of a person finding their soulmate—dying before they’re able to confess their love, and remaining in the veil in-between unable to move on. The regret and disappointment is masked by their intense sound; guitar lines that scream Midwest emo and classic jazz progressions, a breath of fresh air. It has a devil may care attitude while being cultured and calculated in matching their lyrics and tone. The purgatory hurts the most, unable to fully rid oneself of those desperate, fleeting moments.
The band is fronted by Chinese-Canadian songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lian Shao, and has been making music together since 2020. I really like the bite and charisma that Tiger Really has shown, and it’s no doubt their debut album Swan Sting (out this October) is much anticipated.

4) Noble Oak - “Let It Out”
With enough wanderlust to span today’s travel itineraries while feeling nostalgic for summers past, “Let It Out” is serenely spirited. The project of Vancouver’s Patrick Fiore, Noble Oak is immersive and perceptive in presentation; he’s very visual in storytelling. Inspired by the “spontaneity and recklessness” of his 2019 summer and the release at season’s end, the song beckons an unbridled freedom mixed with hesitation and longing. It has ethereal qualities with acoustic guitar and layered synths, but also embraces the crisp electronic beats and overall mellow ambiance. I was very impressed with the composition – how his voice gently oscillates in the repetition of the song’s title, and in the transitional dialogue it mirrors in sound (“And of those places you go when you’re sleeping / Do they show you a way to keep dreaming?”).
When It Finds You is out now on Last Gang Records / MNRK.

5) Frantic feat. Mikenna Hope & Safe Trip - “You’ll See”
“You’ll See” is a powerful spoken word/hip-hop collaboration between Okanagan artists Frantic (Travis Andrews), Mikenna Hope, and producer Safe Trip. An ode to self-love in spite of the doubts, fears, and hardships perceived by oneself and others. I liked the alternating rap verse, RnB chorus. Cavernous beats and crisp clicks mingle with gentle strings and piano. Mikenna and Travis are both passionate performers and extremely talented at wordplay, with the latter often weaving mystical forest imagery into his narrative. That said, lines like “I am enough and I am here” are just as, if not more impactful. “You’ll See” reminds listeners that healing is a journey. Bare and ever-evolving, the sky never looked so clear.
Written by: Natalie Hoy
6) Clara Cloud and Jeremy Lim - “Ocean Lullaby”
Does mermaidcore exist? If so, “Ocean Lullaby” is a perfect anthem. It’s eerie and dreamlike as it lures listeners toward the dark side – you’re almost there, and it’s oh so enticing (“Your song can blur the lines between the sea and land”). Inspired by the mythology of sirens and the compelling nature of toxic relationships, the song has the right amount of electric wonder. Clara Cloud’s (Clara MacLeod) voice is mystifying; a spellbinding effect with her sweet tone whilst drawing closer to the proverbial edge. The beats are pulsing and sharp, like water rippling as it interacts with an outside source. Composer/producer Lim offers a vivid soundscape, interspersed with the mimicking of siren calls and pacing that follows the temptation.
In their debut music collaboration, the pair has the hypnotic factor—sinking into the depths of our desires to be saved, loved, or to face the great unknown.

Ailbhe Reddy has released a teaser from her second album, “Endless Affair” by sharing new single ‘Last To Leave’. ‘Last To Leave’ is a dazzling and wistful tale of the fantasy fuelled by frustration and tenderness while being self-aware of picking up the same habits of the beloved person in question. “It’s about having an infatuation with someone who you find frustrating and watching as they…

Carcass, Municipal Waste, Sacred Reich, & Creeping Death Live Show Review: 4/18, Metro, Chicago
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
These days, new Carcass albums--and subsequently, tours and live shows--are rare enough to warrant must-see status. Their 2013 comeback, Surgical Steel, ranked among their best ever albums, and 2021′s Torn Arteries (Nuclear Blast) at the very least stood up to their classic material, a feat considering only two albums ago was the disappointment that was their original Swansong. Immediately into the band’s headlining set Tuesday at Metro, it was apparent they’d chug along and smash in as many songs as possible. His bass pointed to the sky like a scepter, Jeff Walker alternated between icy conjuring and guttural growling, tossing seemingly infinite picks into the crowd, while guitarist Bill Steer was his usual understated, but mighty self. And whether soloing or navigating the band through complex time signatures, drummer Daniel Wilding, the band’s drummer since 2012, propelled new and old songs with ease and force. Carcass’s set was, simply, professional, minimally laden with stage banter, maximally laden with enveloping heaviness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That Carcass is touring with the party-hard thrashing of Municipal Waste and righteous riffage of Sacred Reich is mildly surprising, given that the bands occupy different subgenres of metal. The latter’s lead singer, Phil Rind, even admitted to not being super familiar with the music of the Liverpool death metal legends, also remarking that the last time Sacred Reich played Metro was in the early 90′s with Obituary, who sang “no words, just growls.” But the clear crossover fandom in the crowd was, if not evidence of the decreasing importance of genre purity, certainly a refreshing reminder that heavy music occupies different moods and states of mind that can take place in the same night, or even at once. Municipal Waste conquered first-track sound troubles to deliver a breakneck set of beer-chugging anthems spanning their entire discography. “Shoutout to security,” declared lead vocalist Tony Foresta as they deal with crowd surfers and broken down boxes thrown on stage during “Breathe Grease”. “This is not a Built to Spill show,” he smirked. Celebrating lead guitarist Nick Poulous’s birthday, the Richmond band built their setlist around chant-heavy material, from “You’re Cut Off” and “Sadistic Magician” to band theme song “Born to Party”. As the crowd chanted back, “Municipal Waste is gonna fuck you up,” it felt like they were paying the highest compliment to the people on stage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sacred Reich was, as expected, a bit more politically outspoken, or at least unafraid to expose the earnestness behind their songs. Really, anybody who has heard “The American Way” knows the band’s socially conscious, anti-capitalistic stance; these days, their songs look inward to imagine a better world outward. “Manifest Reality”, from the band’s most recent record Awakening (Metal Blade), which was released in 2019 a full 23 years after its predecessor, is a “be the change you want to see in the world” type of song. “Salvation” is, simply, an ode to music. And Awakening’s title track is proof that you can still sound like a mammoth when being compassionate. Like Municipal Waste, Rind has a sense of humor, too: When he announced that the band almost had a new record done to sparse applause, he joked, “We’re thankful for all 7 of you.” But at the end of the day, every Rind wail, every Wiley Arnett guitar solo and Dave McClain snare hit and Joey Radziwill power chord led up to their performance of “Death Squad”, dedicated to founding member Jason Rainey who died of a heart attack in 2020. Sacred Reich's looking forward as long as they can occasionally reflect on their past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The band most faithful to the spirit of the night’s headliner was the first band who played given the least amount of time. Dallas death metal group Creeping Death combined nimble lead guitars and rhythms that bounced between stomps and barnburners. Their stage setup was remarkably democratic, roaring vocalist Reese Alavi sandwiched between leg-kicking guitarist Trey Pemberton, guitarist A.J. Ross, III, and bassist Eric “Rico” Mejia, tight in both their playing and synchronized hair spinning. Though they played mostly older material, including the blistering title track to their 2021 EP The Edge of Existence, they thankfully performed “Intestinal Wrap”, the single from their upcoming album Boundless Domain (MNRK Heavy). Alavi’s a dynamic vocalist, to the point where you didn’t even feel the absence of Cannibal Corpse’s George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher from the studio version of the song. Creeping Death was certainly the least known among other bands on the bill who have been at it for decades, but they were anything but green.

Album Review: Texas Hippie Coalition - The Name Lives On (MNRK Heavy)
It's a great release and it manages to keep Southern rock interesting from beginning to end, which isn’t often the case.
Heavy Southern rock band Texas Hippie Coalition will release their seventh studio album, The Name Lives On, on 21st April 2023 via MNRK Heavy. You’d be hard-pressed to find a person who doesn’t enjoy at least one track from Texas Hippie Coalition, thanks to their inimitable catchy groove. The band are adept at creating head-banging anthems and, once again, they have absolutely smashed it with…
