This Week in BL - A Lot Ended, Quite Bit Started, I got things to say about it all
Organized, in each category, by ones I'm enjoying most at the top.
Nov 2023 Wk 2
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Thai
My Dear Gangster Oppa (Thurs iQIYI) 3 of 8 - This is just a great BL. So fun with few frills and paced nicely. Thai talent + Korean story is proving very harmonious for narrative flow. I’m delighted. I love that they don’t shy away from letting Tew be an actual violent criminal who is just gone and mushy for this one geeky cutie. Also I appreciate it when a show hangs a lantern on its own plot failing. In this case, the main character being drunk as a plot devise 2x in subsequent eps.
Tumblr media
Twins the series (Fri GaGa) ep 2 of 10 - Love it. Love Spite and his chronic guilt over his younger brother, the golden child. Love that he is driven to repair for a past that no longer exists. Evil mom who cares more for what her son can do than that son, let alone his brother. The volleyball well…. erm. I played varsity (setter) so this is amusing to me but I’m not mad about it.
I agree that this Not Me just sports and pulp.
Last Twilight (Fri YT) 1 of 12 - JimmySea are back and is this... good? Do I like this? I don't have faith, GMMTV has been doing us dirty lately. But I think I like it! Why The Little Prince AGAIN? Ugh.
Middleman’s Love (Fri YT & iQIYI 1 of 8 - Domundi giving us an office comedy hyung romance staring TutorYim (Cutie Pie) with NetJames (Bed Friend) and LeoTai (Friend Forever) providing support. Lets hope they stick to only 8 eps. Buckle up, I got shit talking to type.
Tumblr media
I warned ya out the gate that this is a Cheewin comedy, so tonally it could be very OFF, and boy howdy is it EVER off. There's a place this kind of show goes where it's so cringe it's visually rotten and this one went there out that gate. Also, I'm gonna say it because no one else has, Yim is not good in this role. Comedy is HARD to do and Cheewin isn't doing this green actor any favors. He's chewing the scenery like a woodchuck after a diet.
To be fair, Tutor isn't great either, but he's been given less rope to hang himself with. Mai is currently suffering from seme obscurity: the love interest's defining characterization being = tall and handsome. (Which is not characterization... agony... glares at Cdramas.) We will see if he gets a personality, but based on past work form this director and this writer, don't bank on it.
Frankly? I'm not convinced either of them are mature enough as a pair or as actors to carry something this abrasive and to stand up to Cheewin's visual abuse of our eyeballs. I think this is going to be a rocky ride. HOWEVER, because it has tropes I'm good with (as opposed to SCOY) I'm sticking with it for now but this is gonna be ROUGH going for everyone.
Tumblr media
Backstory: This used to be a JimmyTommy vehicle before the pair split (also prev title Middle Love). Adapted from a Y-novel. I can actually see Tommy in this role very clearly and I suspect he may have been bettern(and I am more a TutorYim fan as a pair). Also I will likely be referencing SCOY a lot while watching this because SCOY is peak Cheewin nonsense comedy but with an incredibly strong lead pair, so comparisons will be drawn.
Absolute Zero (Weds iQIYI) ep 7 of 12 - Sigh. Linguistic negotiation but for sad reasons? It fascinating but it hurts. Look, the cast is very good I just don’t like the premise.
My Universe (Sun iQIYI) The Camp Fire ep 12 of 24 - Well that was extremely odd. I’m not sure how I feel about it. If it hadn’t had the strange framework and horror component and been just a simple BL story I probably would’ve enjoyed it. Why do the pulps always  squander their best pairs? 5/10 New installment (Friends Forever) looks terrible and not BL.
Beyond The Star (Weds iQIYI) qp 1 of 8 - House of Stars meets Boyband. I am not impressed. Thailand just needs to leave everything music related to Korea. I’m enacting a ban. The framework on this is truly awful. The talent is not talented in acting let alone dance or song. I thought about sticking with it a few more eps but i putting in on hold. It’s too wooden even for me.
@heretherebedork I depend on you to report back. This is the kind of thing only you can watch. It’s like Cupid 2023.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
A Breeze of Love (Korea iQIYI) 1-2 of 8 - previously know as Weather Forecast Love this one popped up in MDL's currently airing, and I was like, what what? Basically: Tsundere insomniac grump and his sunshine jock ex bestie (human sleeping pill) who now hates him. Basketball is involved and I love it.
It ended, are we sad? REVIEWS
Tumblr media
Kiseki: Dear to Me (Taiwan Viki & Gaga)
Yes, we sad! Ai Di and his dumb oversized sweaters and flappy flappy sleeves are EVERYTHING.
Final ep? Nice that the elder gays got screen time, more of this please? Sides dominated this finale, matched outfits and all. Also I’m living for the Bless this Mess shirt. Finally Taiwan gave us lots of biting and a counter lift. It’s like they know me!
Quick pitch for KDTM?
The plot is totally ridiculous and slightly unhinged, but that’s normal for Taiwan. It involves all the tropes under a very casual framework of gay mafia gangs + food = love. Absolutely every character is queer. There’s a gum-ball machine of cameos, elder gay rep, great chemistry from all pairs, and a KILLER side couple. As a result Kiseki is a poster child for Taiwanese BL, and I happen to love Taiwanese BL. Bonus? They also managed to END IT WELL, which we cannot expect from Taiwan. 9/10 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Triggers for knife play, child abuse, lingering trauma. I found both platforms did not do a great job on subs, but I will give the edge to Viki for pure usability.
Tumblr media
You Are Mine (Taiwan Viki & Gaga)
We are more disappointed than sad.
Far be it from me to extend this show, but we should’ve had 2 episodes of quality supportive boyfriends coping with family drama before the mom-confrontation climax and defense of the ESTABLISHED relationship. Baby's little speach had no power or impact coming where it did in this narrative, even though it was sweet. And while the make-out scenes were charming it mostly jsut felt like we'd squandered this pair. This last ep was good and rewatchable, but a series cannot be judged on its last ep alone.
Finally... could have used some side dishes. My vote? Lesbian secretaries!
Conclusion
I am sorry Taiwan, you know I love you, but I have to say it: this show was a mess of terrible pacing. And not a hot mess, sadly. I should have liked everything about this: it’s an office drama, it’s mature characters, it’s grumpy/sunshine, it’s a strong power dynamic, and it’s Taiwan - which means good chemistry. YAM was all those things and yet… something went horribly wrong with the narrative structure. You tried dears, but not hard enough. 7/10
Tumblr media
Bump Up Business (Korea Gaga)
Well, poop. Don’t have them speak English. Also no playing drunk. Meanwhile, all the manipulative gay drama. No kiss of course.
How do I summate this?
An idol group did the best they could with a script tailored to idols but which they were not allowed to fully realize because they are active idols in the same group. Ultimately it felt a bit like OnlyOneOf were just doing one of those Kpop skits for a variety show were two of of them dresses in drag/gay/BL and "ha ha isn't it funny?" I don’t know, it was fine? 6/10
stop wasting my time, Korea
Tumblr media
Mr Cinderella 2 (Vietnam YT)
DNF on the advice of several of my BL spies I will not be finishing this. Apparently it pretty much ends sad. Here's an explanation.
It's Airing But...
I Cannot Reach You AKA I Can't Reach You AKA Kimi ni wa Todokanai (Japan Tues Netflix-Japan & ????) 8 eps - in classic JBL fashion, I Cannot Reach You could not be reached. I will try it when I have some time and access to my home computer.
One Room Angel (Japan Gaga) 6 eps - adaptation of Harada’s manga (which I did not like) about a clerk who's stabbed, nearly dies, and returns home to find an angel waiting for him. With only 5 eps and a good chance this won’t end happy, I'm gonna wait and let you tell me how it goes.
WAITING FOR VERDICT OR TO BINGE
What Did You Eat Yesterday Season 2 AKA Kinou Nani Tabeta? Season 2 (Japan Gaga) 10 eps - I find this series more fun to binge, so I'm waiting until it completes its run.
SHADOW (Thai Gaga) 14eps - this is a horror BL with ghosts & paranormal elements in a boarding school setting. I'm not wild about Thai horror (or horror at all). It features Singto (who did paranormal BL He's Coming to Me) opposite Fluke N (who's done a couple horror's before). Also Fiat. Dan suffers from sleep paralysis, and in his dreams he sees a shadow that suffocates him. It gets worse when he transfers schools. I'm holding off on this one and if told it's good I'll binge watch.
Next Week Looks Like This
Tumblr media
11/15 Let's Eat Together Aki and Haru AKA Aki wa Haru to Gohan wo (Japan Gaga) - this BL movie is coming to Gaga.
11/16 PLAYBOYY (Thurs ????) 10 eps - trailer here, high heat and it's helmed by Cheewin (shudder) with screenplay by Den (Only Friends) under Copy A Bangkok. It's gonna be a shizz show people. It's predicting Thai style "dark" (War of Y) one of my least favorites. Apparently there is a "plot" but when has Cheewin ever bothered with plot? A university kid who was involved with escorts, sex-trade, porn, online hook-ups, drugs, prostitution, blackmail, revenge, and so forth goes missing. His twin (sigh) and two friends look for him.
11/17 Pit Babe (Fri iQIYI) ep 1 of 14 - high heat teaser here, based on alittlebixth's omegaverse novel #พิษเบ๊บ’ set in the world of car racing (author says show will not be omegaverse). Charlie (fresh face), a young hot nerd, approaches his driver idol (Pavel "my love" 2 Moons 2) to borrow a racing car and win one for the team. Production house is new to BL but behind the Club Friday stuff. Show stars many known actors: Nut (Oxygen), Pop (Ram in La Cuisine), Pon (Phai in Gen Y, we LOVE him), Benz (twins in En of Love: This Is Love Story).
Thailand bring the November heat, I guess?
Upcoming November BL
11/19 Bake Me Please (Sun Gaga) ep 1 of 6 - trailer here, stars Ohm (of OhmFluke) opposite Guide (bestie from IFYLITA) and possibly also Poom (well known, but not for BL). This looks like an actually gay version of Antique Bakery (play it again, BL). Still, I'm intrigued, it looks HELLA pretty.
11/22 7 Days Before Valentine (Weds ????) ep 1 of 10 - trailer here, horror-esk. Adapted from y-novel of the same name, directed by Tu (180 Degree) stars Jet (Why You… Y Me?). When you want your old love again, but fate sends you a reaper instead. All he can do for you is kill people. I'll likely give this a pass and wait to binge if safe.
11/25 The Sign (Sat ????) ep 1 of 10 - trailer here, horror-esk, but with a suspense and adult characters. Special investigators who loved each other in previous lives reunite in new bodies. Stars Billy Patchanon (BillySeng) & Babe Tanatat (new). Includes other SCOY favorites as a special investigation team. I may give this a try because I'm into the non-horror bits.
11/26 The Whisperer (Sun ????) 1 of 10 - trailer here. Thai horror BL that ALSO involves cheating (what joy is mine). He has dimples (My Ride) but I don't think even that gives me the will. Maybe a binge for me.
11/26 Cooking Crush (Sun YT) 1 of 12 - OffGun are back, trailer here. Adapted from the novel “Love Course! เสื้อกาวน์รุกเสื้อกุ๊กรับ” by iJune4S this is about Prem who runs a not-so-popular restaurant with 2 friends. About to go on a cooking competition with a huge reward, Prem gets involved with Ten, a stressed-out med student who wants Prem to teach him to cook.
11/30 For Him (Thurs ????) ep 1 of 10 - high heat trailer, I suspect iQIYI will scoop this one up. From the people who brought us Unforgotten Night (please no) based on a y-novel, man nursing a heartbreak has a one-night stand, but the other boy didn't want it to end. It looks terribly trashy so I'm in! Maybe I'll do a trash watch?
VIP Only (Taiwan) - may be delayed/canceled
Wuju Bakery AKA Space Bakery (Korea) - this one may be DOA
A Breeze of Love (Korea) - I know less than nothing about this.
Nov 2023 line up with screen caps here. Not kept updated.
Original 2023 forthcoming BL master post (see comments, some are inaccurate, NOT KEPT UPDATED).

Late.
Wordcount: 1.1K
Read part one or part two here!
Choosing your best friend (and the person you've had feelings for practically your entire life) over your brother is a troubling thing. But, Miya Atsumu feels little to no regret.
Sure, he feels a little bad when he thinks back to Osamu's defeated face when he left the cafe, and the way it was so evident that Osamu hadn't been sleeping well when he went to go pick up the rest of your things. But, (in his mind at least) this was not nearly enough of a punishment for what Osamu did to you.
Maybe, he's a little biased because he likes you more than a brother-in-law should, but it's only normal when you've been friends for that long...right?
Atsumu is having a dilemma.
The cards have been dealt in an odd way. A way that has never been dealt to him before. Should he fold, and back away from this opportunity? Or should he go all in, and take a chance, while betraying his brother?
How do you tell your best friend of years -who just so happened to break up with your identical brother- that you've been in love with them since you were children?
How, in the nicest way possible, do you tell them that you made a mistake in not confessing sooner and that you believe (know) that they chose the wrong brother?
Now shouldn't be the time for Atsumu to be thinking these things, but as he watches you an Suna play Mario cart together on the couch, legs over each others, throwing playful punches at each other whenever a banana peel or shell is thrown, he can't help but feel like he's going to mess up and miss his chance for a second time.
How is he going to do that though? Standing in the kitchen watching, he wonders if he should even try. Sure, you and him have gotten closer recently but it is most likely because you just sent divorce papers to his brother, and Atsumu is acting as the middleman.
Even if you've been friends for years, at some point, deep down, it has to bother you right? How could you see Atsumu's face and not think of Osamu?
All of these thoughts race through Atsumu's mind, constantly, it feels like he's been thinking about these things for years, but in reality, it's only been a couple months since you've moved in with him and Suna.
Sometime in the future, he'll muster up the courage to ask you to become more than friends, he thinks, as he walks back to his room to pack his bags for an upcoming volleyball trip. He's going to be out of town for the next week, at training camps, press conferences, and friendly games between clubs.
Maybe he'll take you to a nice dinner, or a late-night park trip after getting your favourite convenience store snacks, or perhaps he'll take you to a place you've always wanted to visit around the world.
-
After Atsumu's week-long trip, he feels like he's finally come to a conclusion, a solid way to confess how he's felt about you for the past 2 or so years of your lives.
He thinks, optimistically, that 'today is the day'. The day that fate will play out in his hands, you'll reciprocate how he feels, like it should have been from the start.
Today, however, is not that day. Atsumu comes to a harsh realization that fate will not always be on his side and that some things just really aren't meant to be.
Today is the day that Atsumu thought he would stop stressing about how he feels about you and his brother for the first time in months, finally tell you how he felt, and everything would play out nicely.
Today, Atsumu Miya entered his shared apartment to find Suna Rintarou planting a soft kiss on the top of your head as you fell asleep in his arms.
He feels his heart shatter in his chest, as he watches Suna rub your back, looking down at the way you lay on his chest.
Atsumu feels the same heartbreak that ripped his heart to shreds back when he was 15 and Osamu had just told him that he was taking you on a date.
He feels like time has stopped, as he just stands in the entryway of the apartment, watching, feeling his heart shatter into more and more pieces as the two of you continue to cuddle in the blissful unawareness that Atsumu is facing the second worst heartbreak of his life.
A vibration in his pocket shifts his focus back to reality, distracting him from the aching feeling in his chest. He reaches into his pocket and pulls his phone out, reading the text that was just sent to him.
"Hope you got home safe, rest up and make sure to stretch! Next practice is in two days, at 7 AM. :)" - Captian Meian
With a heavy heart, and a seemingly now even heavier body, Atsumu picks up his bags and begins walking towards his room, exchanging a quick 'hey' with Suna as he walks by.
He lets his eyes fill with tears the second his bedroom door shuts behind him. In the confines of his bedroom, he lets his tears roll down his face, staining his cheeks.
Unpacking his bags, he begins taking out all the gear from his bags and putting clothes he didn't end up wearing back into his closet. He does this mindlessly, feeling numb because of the ache in his chest.
When his hand bumps a white box that was tucked into the side of his bag. The numbness in his body fades, and the overwhelming feeling of heartbreak comes rushing back to him.
He picks up the box and feels over the ribbon that it's wrapped with to keep it closed. He picked your favourite colour to wrap it with when the clerks asked him if he had a preference in which ribbon they used,
He opens the box to reveal a necklace, one with a single simple charm, one that you had been talking about buying for yourself for months now.
With a defeated sigh, he closes the box, pulls open a drawer in his bedside table, and places it inside.
The box sits in his bedside table for months, collecting dust over time, the pristine white box becomes a dull grey. In all honesty, Atsumu had forgotten the box was even there.
That was, until he saw you wearing the same necklace that occupied said box months later.
"You finally got the necklace for yourself?" He asks, leaning against the kitchen wall as you grab glasses to place at the dinner table.
You smile up at him, with the same smile that he fell in love with back when you guys were kids.
"Suna got it for me."

SUMMARY: You're far too nervous to talk to the handsome store owner yourself, so he takes the first step for you. (Or rather, his shadow friend does.)
WARNINGS: None!!
COMMENTS: HELLO SAM KISSERS...WHERE ARE YOU....... (i am shouting into the abyss.)
Tumblr media
Receiving a job offer from Night Raven College was a huge step in your career, so obviously you accepted without a second thought.
The job was grueling, especially because it was your first year working at such a prestigious college. You were placed under Crewel’s supervision, learning how to craft potions and memorize ingredients that you would have to teach upcoming students later in your career. He sent you on errand runs for him while he wrangled his students, the rowdy boys giving you heart attacks more than a few times. (Azul was by far your favorite student—after all, he knew exactly what he was doing and never felt the need to badger you for useless information that Crewel could explain easily. You knew it was because the newer students were scared of him, but using you as a middleman didn’t make your job any easier.)
If there was one thing that did though, it would have been the store owner Crewel sent you running to whenever he needed any suspicious herbs that couldn't be obtained close by.
He was handsome, you noticed the first time you came by, peeking at him through your lashes as you pretended to browse through his wares. His easy smile and magenta gaze had you weak in the knees, and when he asked you if the bundle of rare herbs was all you needed, your mouth ran dry. Somehow, you managed to stammer out a yes, mouth feeling like it was full of cotton as he winked. You could only gape like a fish out of water as he rung you up, humming a cheery tune. The price of the herbs rattled in your brain like a die rolling off a table from being thrown too hard, and you weren’t even sure how you counted the money, placing a number of thaumarks on the counter and accepting the change numbly. Fuck, how was he so gorgeous?
“Have a lovely day. Come again sometime.” he shot you a heart throbbing smile, tongue poking out from between his teeth.
You practically bolted out of the store and back to Crewel.
If your mentor noticed anything off about your composure, he said nothing. You delivered the herbs successfully, but now there was another thing weighing on your mind. You couldn’t even walk past the school store later that day without feeling your face warm, an indescribable pull yanking you adamantly towards the building.
Wait, was that actual tugging?
Your gaze darted down to your pant leg, where you almost screamed at the sight of a shadow of a man in the ground but no actual man to claim it. It pressed a finger to its lips and tugged you again, a wicked grin almost splitting its face in half. You suppressed a scream, taking a deep breath and reminding yourself that Night Raven College had thrown worse at you. And so, you allowed the shadow to drag you into the shop, figuring you could use it as an excuse to talk to the shopkeeper if nothing else. The sound of the bell jingling overhead made you wince and squeeze your eyes shut, trying to steel yourself to meet the gaze of someone who should not be as attractive as he was.
“Oh? My my, you’re by twice in one day? Was there something else you needed? I’ll have it out in a jiffy!” he chuckled, sauntering up to the counter like he owned the place (and he very much did) with a smirk on his face and a raised brow that made you grow all the more nervous.
“Um...actually, your little shadow friend dragged me over.” you mumbled, pointing to the shadow doing flips on (or was it in?) the wall.
He laughed, the sound bright and charming. You couldn’t help but think that it suited him.
“I’m sorry, dear. I’m not laughing at you.” he chuckled, waving his hand dismissively beside his head, “He's a bit of a rascal. You'll find that most little imps on this campus get up to no good all the time. I’m Sam, it's a pleasure to meet you.”
He swept his hand in your direction, bowing to you as he waited for you to take it. You told him your name in turn before grabbing his hand gently, heart pounding in our chest as he shook it.
“Lovely! Now, to business.” he shot back up, magenta eyes gleaming in the low lighting, “Is there something you desire? Anything?”
“Um, I’ve recently been hired here at Night Raven College, and...I’ve been having a bit of trouble navigating.” you lied through your teeth, fighting the urge to fidget with your blazer as his half lidded eyes bore into your soul.
“I see, I see. Would you like a tour? Or just a map?” I can provide whatever you need...for a price.” he chuckled, twirling his hand and producing a coin from thin air. He rolled it around in his fingers and you had to shake your head to break out of the trance he had effortlessly put you in.
“My afternoon is open for a tour if you wouldn’t mind.” you replied, pulling your lower lip between your teeth.
“Of course! Allow me to leave the shop in the hands of my companion.” he snickered, gracefully stepping out from behind the counter as his shadow friend took his place, “I would be delighted to guide our newest addition.”
“Thank you.” you managed to smile, heart fluttering in your chest, “Crewel gave me directions here, but...I’m not that acquainted with the rest of the campus yet.”
“Oh! How rude of him, leaving our newest staff member all by their lonesome!” Sam teased, beckoning you towards the front door, “I assure you, I will be the best host this campus has to offer.”
He leaned in close, cupping a hand around his mouth as if he was about to spill a secret.
“And if you're good, I might have a few secret spots to show you.”
A shiver shot down your spine as he reeled back with a laugh, swinging his shop door open with grandeur. You could tell your face was getting warmer, so you tore your attention away from Sam and back towards the shadow man at the counter.
The shadow man was making fun of you, wiggling on the spot as it clasped its hands together, a huge grin splitting its face once again. You laughed, louder than intended, shaking your head at its silly antics. You didn't want to keep Sam waiting any longer, so you waved at the shadow (and it waved back, funnily enough) before exiting the shop.
“Boo.” Sam whispered, lips millimeters from your ear as you shut the door.
You yelped and jumped back, heart lurching in your chest for the fourth time that day. He laughed, producing a deck of cards from thin air and shuffling them absentmindedly.
“Why were you hiding before the door?!” you gasped, exasperated.
“You looked like a frog caught in an alligator's mouth back there! I wanted to make you more comfortable.” he laughed, pulling the King of Hearts card out of the deck and displaying it triumphantly between his fingers, “You look a lot less tense now, newest staff member.”
“I guess it worked.” you mumbled, embarrassed that he'd caught you so off guard, “Just don't do that again!”
“Oh, I make no promises.” he snickered, sliding the card back into the deck with ease, “Though when I do, I hold true to them. Now, that tour I mentioned. Follow me, newest staff member. I'll take you on the most grandiose tour you'll ever see!”
You thought Sam was just being dramatic when he said that, but he really did pull out all the stops. Hell, he even got Vargas to lend you two brooms so he could show you how campus from above. By the time his tour had concluded, you'd seen all of Crewel's ingredient closets (much to the chargrain of your mentor, who was staring holes into you the entire time Sam was prattling on about nightshade, and you had never shrunk in on yourself more than you did at that moment), Trein's collection of astrolabes, the locker rooms (which Vargas had been way too proud talking about), and the Headmage's own aviary.
Sam was right, he really did know secret spots.
“Well, newest staff member? Did I wow you with my expertise?” Sam beamed, positively glowing with pride.
“You certainly did.” you huffed, chest heaving with exertion, “How did you even know about the aviary? How does the Headmage hide that thing?”
“Woah now, that's not part of the tour!” he clicked his tongue, shaking his finger at you, “If I tell you all of my secrets, I'll lose my charm!”
“I highly doubt that.” you snorted, a small grin spreading across your face as you realized how comfortable you felt with him.
“Oho? What is this I'm hearing?” he cooed, cupping his ear and leaning closer to you, “Does this mean you think I'm charming?”
“What?! No! I mean, shit- that's not what I meant-” you panicked, grasping for any words that could explain the hole you were continuously digging yourself.
“Relax, I'm teasing.” he stepped back with a grin, eyes sparkling with mischief, “You're just so fun to tease!”
“Don't do that!” you whined, crossing your arms over your chest with a huff, “The last thing I want to do is offend a staff member the first year I'm here!”
“Oh, you should hear about the stories I have of my first year working here.” Sam sighed fondly, staring off into space with a wistful expression, “What a time.”
“It can't be any worse than the fashion plunder I had with Crewel.” you shuddered, the image of a gray blazer flashing in your mind, “I'm never wearing that gray blazer ever again.”
Sam threw his head back and laughed, the sound deep and genuine. You felt yourself grow hot in the face again because you got him to laugh. Sam placed a gentle hand on your shoulder, shooting you a wink when you met his gaze.
“You can always transfer departments and work with me if you don’t like the work Crewel gives you.” he offered, uncharacteristically serious, “We value top tier education, for the staff and our little imps. If alchemy isn’t the best fit for you, talk to the Headmage.”
“Oh-! Um, thank you!” you nodded, surprised at his sudden change in demeanor, “It’s...always been my passion, though, so I’d be more likely to push through and see where this path goes than anything.”
“Persistence is always a lovely trait to have.” Sam grinned, pulling away from you with a skip in his step, “Just remember, if you need anything at all, come to me. I’ll have it for you in a jiffy!”
By the time you got back to Sam’s shop, the sun was sinking beneath the horizon. The students must all be in the cafeteria eating dinner, you realized. Your stomach rumbled at the thought, and you slapped a hand over it in a vain attempt to silence it. Sam turned to look at you with a raised brow, a smirk decorating his pretty face.
“Hungry? Allow me to get something for you!” he chuckled, flinging the door to his shop open and beckoning you in with a single gloved hand.
You followed him back inside his shop with an amused grin on your face. Today had many surprises, but as Sam threw open the door to his mini fridge and pulled what looked like chicken gumbo leftovers with a huge grin on his face, you couldn’t help but think that he was the best one.

Turtles Catches Up With Old GMMTV: Secret Crush On You (SCOY) Edition
[What’s going on here? After joining Tumblr and discovering Thai BLs through KinnPorsche in 2022, I began watching GMMTV’s new offerings -- and realized that I had a lot of history to catch up on, to appreciate the more recent works that I was delving into. From tropes to BL frameworks, what we’re watching now hails from somewhere, and I’m learning about Thai BL's history through what I’m calling the Old GMMTV Challenge (OGMMTVC). Starting with recommendations from @absolutebl on their post regarding how GMMTV is correcting for its mistakes with its shows today, I’ve made an expansive list to get me through a condensed history of essential/classic/significant Thai BLs produced by GMMTV and many other BL studios. My watchlist, pasted below, lists what I’ve watched and what’s upcoming, along with the reviews I’ve written so far. Today, I offer my thoughts on the importance of Saint Suppapong's and Cheewin Thanamin's Secret Crush on You in the annals of Thai BL history.]
I offer a very hearty THANK YOU to my dear friends @lurkingshan and @bengiyo for reviewing this draft before publication!
Well! A VERY belated happy new year from the OGMMTVC shores! I have allowed myself a lengthy onboarding back to the pattern of watching older Thai BLs due to many life circumstances around the 2023 holidays.
But I do still stay on my grind: while I was slowly watching and re-watching SCOY over the last month, I've added two current shows to the list, which I'll explain about later, and I've also taken up reading an incredibly important book to this project, Dr. Thomas Baudinette's ethnographic study, Boys Love Media in Thailand, which is giving me tremendous insight and history into the development of the Thai BL genre from direct reporting in Asia. In other words, the OGMMTVC project is still cooking along -- I'll plan to post about the book when my current watchlist is at a pause, while current shows on the list are airing.
All that being said, I'm here today to report on my watch of 2022's Secret Crush on You. Here's a little outline to keep me organized:
1) A quick reminder of how SCOY got on the OGMMTVC list, 2) A thematic hit list of why SCOY belongs on the list, and why it's so important for the history of Thai BL, and 3) A few personal takes on the show.
SCOY got on the OGMMTVC list way back in May 2023, in the comments of my glowing review of the second season of Make It Right, suggested by @absolutebl Sensei themself. SCOY is directed by Cheewin Thanamin, who had co-directed MIR and MIR2 along with New Siwaj. (He is also, famously AND infamously, the director of the recent shows Playboyy and Middleman's Love, as well as many other shows, including YYY, Why R U, and more.)
At the time of my watch of MIR2, I reveled in the fabulous endings of TeeFuse and FrameBook, the holistically loving and embracing relationships of those two couples, who were fearlessly and openly queer and committed to each other; and I compared those endings to that of another fabulous Cheewin show, 2023's Bed Friend, which also ended glowingly, after a hell of a traumatic journey, for the dear mains, KingUea.
SCOY, from a growth perspective, fits between the high school world of MIR and the working adult world of Bed Friend, showcasing Toh, the stalker-shy university junior outcast; Nuea, the popular, athletic, and gorgeous university senior, and their respective groups of friends, who, to a tee, end up with each other. In the comments of my MIR2 review, @absolutebl wrote,
"...there is a case to be made that Cheewin is having a conversation with us[,] the culmination of which is actually SCOY. It feels like everything in his career was leading to that show[.]"
I believe this is absolutely right. While the public commentary on SCOY was that the first few episodes would be hard to digest -- for me, it took until episode *9* to feel comfortable enough to ride the SCOY train -- the amount of internal and external-to-BL themes that SCOY carries within it marks it as an incredibly important show for the annals of Thai BL history.
I also want to note that, after SCOY, Cheewin's War of Y also airs in 2022, as a macro commentary on the BL industry. Without having seen War of Y yet -- I think it makes sense, and is quite fitting, that there may be similar themes between these two shows as to what SCOY was addressing by way of personal and industry-related psychologies.
I'll get into those themes in a second, but as so many of you know as well: this was also the first production for Saint Suppapong's agency, Idol Factory, featuring (for 2022) a slate of incredible new QL actors and actresses who have already made a fast and deep impact on the genre (...fast and deep impact huh huh ANYWAY).
Putting ourselves into Saint's shoes -- a man well familiar with the pitfalls of the BL industry, vis à vis his associations with his previous PerthSaint and ZeeSaint ships -- I can make a safe assumption that he approached the production of SCOY with the intent to make a groundbreaking show, and to approach the fan service side of the BL industry with as much consciousness for his actors as possible. While I'm not watching Idol Factory's latest show, The Sign, I am noting that The Sign's two stars, Billy Patchanon (of SCOY) and Babe Tanatat are very good at their fan service offerings. (Heng in this video, omg.) But all that being said, the unfortunate incident last year of the untimely revelation of Seng Wichai's and Freen Sarocha's relationship indicates that Idol Factory is also not immune to the controversies and pitfalls of the BL and shipping industries.
What I particularly loved about SCOY -- and why I agree with @absolutebl and many BL fandom veterans that it belongs on the OGMMTVC list -- is that this show unabashedly insisted that all people are people, all humans are equitably humans, and all humans deserve the same emotional and social respect as anyone else. It punched social expectations of the "winners" and "losers" down to the ground to offer nuanced narratives of most of its characters.
We see Toh (Seng Wichai) and his group of friends repeatedly put down and bullied. We see Toh and Jao kicked to the ground for their looks and presentations. We see popular Nuea (Billy) and Sky (Heng Asavarid) suffering from jealousy, insecurity, unrequited love and desire. We see Nuea and Sky objectified. We see Daisy question themself for their femme identity, and we see Daisy's group of friends become so moved and emotional about this change as to both uplift Daisy's preferences and to support them in whatever changes they want to make.
We also see -- for only the second time on the OGMMTVC list, and surely in the biggest BL up til 2022 -- a prominent femme side character in Daisy, one who is very much pursued by a cis male suitor in Touch. (The first time we see such a prominent femme character on the OGMMTVC syllabus is, again, in Cheewin's Make It Right 2, in the character of Yok, who was very out and very gay throughout that season.)
I'm going to examine this more in just a bit, but I also want to note, in a fabulous conversation I had with @bengiyo about SCOY, that this show also somewhat upends social expectations of who exactly gets bullied in a "typical" school setting. We do very much see Toh and his friend group get attacked. We see that friend group come together in support of each other. But we also see them very much accepted, as they are, by the older, more popular friend group.
There are many more examples of these themes, but in any case:
These were nuanced, layered, and sophisticated depictions of humanity, all for a show within the BL genre that had started its journey, way back in 2014, in demanding clear seme/uke dynamics and male/female characteristic assumptions between main couples. SCOY clearly took great pains to examine and upend these assumptions. In particular, the hot tub conversation in episode 9 had me going wild; a conversation that has become legendary as it was the first time (and not the last!) that a character of Billy Patchanon's stated that he was verse:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the time we get to 2022, I love what this conversation signifies for Thai BL. From SOTUS's Kongpob saying that he'll make Arthit his wife; to Pat clarifying to BOTH Pran AND Phupha, "I'm not your wife" -- and, now in SCOY, to Nuea being like, "oh, roles? Yeah, whateves, I'm down," is such a refreshing spin to the conversation about the demands that the genre, AND society, place on hulking cis-presenting men like Nuea/Billy.
Of course, the biggest upending to any assumptions that viewers (including myself) may have had about the dynamics between the two main couples of NueaToh and SkyJao was in seeing how deeply insecure both Nuea and Sky were of the stability of their relationships with their boyfriends in Toh and Jao. Nuea and Sky both recognized that it was literally society itself -- and the very deep internal impacts that society could have on the psyches of the nerdy Toh and Jao -- that could threaten the sanctity of Nuea's and Sky's relationships.
Nuea and Sky weren't relying or assuming on their good looks or popularity ranks to win Toh and Jao over. Nuea and Sky were very much in love with these two men, and both wanted to have holistically complete and committed relationships with their boyfriends. And Nuea and Sky WORKED for these relationships, and feared the worst, often, if an internal obstacle (like Jao's insecurity) or external obstacle (like the girls in pursuit of Nuea) got in their way.
@bengiyo, in reference to my conversation with him earlier, mentioned a social shade to all of this that I found fascinating. He noted that this show did NOT interrogate the "weirdness" of Toh and his friend group. I'm actually going to criticize that just a touch in a bit, because I would have liked more background context into Toh, myself. However, Ben makes an important point about this, because he noted to me that majority society WOULD interrogate the origins of Toh's "weirdness" -- and would NOT interrogate the popularity, good looks, and success of Nuea and his group, because majority society would well assume that Nuea and his group are... "normal."
I find these instinctual inclinations to be FASCINATING to ponder, and I really think SCOY did a wonderful job in allowing us as viewers an "in" to a loving alternate reality that those who are considered "weird" in this world deserve a fair and equitable shot at love and acceptance from all corners. Ben noted for me that MUCH more often in majority society, that being queer makes someone vastly unpopular. (Ben also noted for me that what SCOY posits for Nuea and Sky by way of their queer presentations against their popular standings would likely have led to them being ostracized in real life.)
I want to note that this loving alternate reality for the unpopular is almost exactly similar to another fictional environment created by Cheewin in Make It Right -- which prompted an early and memorable conversation between Ben and me early in this project. (Thank you so much to @bengiyo for giving me time and space to read and comment on this SCOY piece.)
I want to posit -- again, without having seen War of Y -- that all of this is fascinating territory for Idol Factory, in its first show, to tread by way of humanizing IF's gloriously good-looking talent in Billy, Heng, and others. I'll know more by way of comparison when I actually watch War of Y -- but I think SCOY does a FABULOUS job in slowly leading viewers to contemplate our assumptions about how "easy" it might be to be a good-looking and/or athletic person in society. Insecurity and instability are common characteristics among all of us. SCOY very decidedly skewers any assumptions that viewers, and society, may have about the "transcendent" nature of the show's fictional "celebrities" to bring all of its characters down to a more common and equitable human level.
By a long shot, these themes are the ones that I loved absolutely the most about SCOY. I have a few personal takes on the show that I'll share in just a moment, but one more shout of celebration that I'd like to offer to SCOY is the following:
Of all the excellent acting in this show -- from Billy, to Heng, to the utterly DELIGHTFUL Looknam Orntara as Som, to the fabulous Surprise Pittikorn as a conflicted and insecure Jao -- let me offer all the flowers to
Seng Wichai, who had me CRINGING, OMG, *CRINGING*, throughout most of SCOY.
I hope this man won AWARDS for this role. All of my feelings towards the character of Toh aside -- Seng Wichai absolutely BODIED this role. I was SQUIRMING during the first three quarters of this series. God, he NAILED every last characteristic that would make a person like Toh so interpretively painful and pitiful. That Seng left Idol Factory last year, before his relationship with Freen was exposed, is, I think, a huge loss for IF. I know War of Y is chaotic, but I actually can't wait to watch it simply to see another side of Seng's acting.
For Seng's Toh to be pursued so intensely by Nuea -- and for Toh to be so Toh throughout that pursuit -- I truly can't think of a past BL actor from the past OGMMTVC dramas that could have done a better and more nuanced job than Seng Wichai to just remain so COMMITTED to Toh's modus operandi of stalking and collecting, especially so DEEP into the 14-episode run.
I will admire Seng's performance endlessly. My very own personal take on SCOY -- which I do not want to detract from its importance in the BL genre annals -- was that I think some of Cheewin's typical chaotic flourishes did not quite comport with the complicated emotionality that SCOY otherwise served.
At the end of the series, we meet Toh's parents in rural Suphanburi -- but we don't get a sense throughout the series of why Toh decides to pursue Nuea only from afar, in stalker-like actions, for so very long. Again, this stalker behavior is only presented as an MO -- and as @bengiyo noted to me, that was likely on purpose, as a means of showing that Toh's friend group would be accepting of each other NO MATTER their unique characteristics.
We also have to wait a VERY long time in the series for Toh to be held accountable for his stalking actions, as he even continues to collect items well into his relationship with Nuea. The flip side of this is an empathic one -- he's collecting the items out of an assumption, on his end, that his relationship with Nuea WILL end. However, it's made clear that Toh had no intention to ever tell Nuea of this side of Toh's behavior.
There were other moments in the show that tonally confused me, particularly in episode 5, the first time that the group goes to the beach, where Toh is in the hotel room with Nuea for the first time, and is both overtly confident that he might get it on with Nuea, but also seems reluctant to actually pursue it once Nuea starts offering hints. I worked this out with @lurkingshan (thank you, friend!) that Toh was demonstrating a brave face and fantasy to start, but was surprised when Nuea actually reciprocated the consideration. This happened a couple of times throughout the show, and Shan's assessment makes absolute sense -- I think I could have used some language clarity around those scenes myself, particularly when Toh was talking postgame with his friends after those moments, that he was surprised by Nuea's acceptance. But, @lurkingshan -- your assessment of the pattern holds, and I understand it.
Once I finished the series, I read @absolutebl's 2022 review of SCOY, and ABL -- I totally understand your perspective. I get the pull between adoration and cringe for this show. A stalker premise is HEAVY. It didn't help, in that heaviness, to have no past context to Toh's behavior, coupled with Seng's incredible cringy performance.
If another director without as many chaotic tendencies could have directed this show -- I think we would have gotten a more complete and contextual emotionality to the show that would have helped Toh's and Nuea's relationship be portrayed as fully full-circle.
I think this is enough of a quibble that'll keep me from easily rewatching SCOY. But, towards the end of the series (@twig-tea, YOU WERE RIGHT!) -- especially from episode 9 onwards -- I felt that I finally and truly understood where this show was going, and what it was about, and I felt endeared to it.
I think many in the fandom will agree that SkyJao was actually the couple that interpreted, much more clearly, the impact of social pressures and insecurities on a relationship, and for that, I will forever shout
SKYJAO! SKYJAO! SKYJAO!
as one of my absolute favorite side pairings of all time.
SCOY was a hard watch for me because of the interruptions of the holidays, of life, and because I've gotten a little less patient with Cheewin's chaos (...I dropped Playboyy, omg, I have to admit), despite my utter admiration for his work on Make It Right and Bed Friend.
But the difficulties I had in watching it should not take away from honoring this show as a hell of an important one. It makes me admire Saint Suppapong to no end for spending his own damn money towards the pursuit of better BLs. And the acting in SCOY was truly FANTASTIC. Despite my own personal reservations, I cannot recommend SCOY highly enough -- because watching it, and enjoying it, is truly a perfect demarcation to understand how far Thai BLs had gotten to its airing moment in 2022.
[OKAY! As I mentioned above, this project has gotten even richer with the addition of my current reading of Dr. Thomas Baudinette's Boys Love Media in Thailand -- I look forward to offering my thoughts on that book after my watch project is over.
I have added a few shows to the watchlist! The recently-aired Last Twilight makes it on as a show that centered disability vis à vis BL for the first time, and Cherry Magic Thailand makes it on as Thailand's first major adaptation of a Japanese manga and dorama. I've also added 23.5, GMMTV's first GL, to the list, although the premiere date continues to be up in the air for that show.
AS WELL! An actual Japanese BL makes it on the list, ha ha! I'm obsessed with this because I'm learning from Baudinette about the Japanese roots of Thai BL. I am in LOVE with Ossan's Love Returns, and it happily features a cameo by none other than Loong Jim and Wen, who hilariously (AND SMARTLY, go get yer money, guys) franchised Moonlight Chicken to Japan. Earth Pirapat and Mix Sahaphap make the most adorable cameo, and they will be inhabiting Haruta's and Maki's roles when the Thai version of Ossan's Love starts filming later this year.
FINALLY! My own personally long-awaited KinnPorsche (OOOO-WEEEEE!) rewatch is up next, but I'm taking a beat to catch up on Cooking Crush. I can't wait for my late-night liveblogs on KP, though -- they're coming soon!
Here's the status of the list -- as always, Tumblr's web editor is NOT nice to this list, so please mosey over to this link for your very latest updates on the project!

When the middleman, middle child and mediator gets his own love interest... how long will it take him to realize what's going on and to accept that he isn't invisible to someone, at least?
I'm already thrilled and I can't wait.

8 eps 40ea (we hope)
Staring TutorYim (brand pair origin = Cutie Pie).
Side couple KingUea (Bed Friends) played by NetJames (same actors). Where Yim played Jade, Uea's bestie.
From Domundi trailer here.
This used to be a JimmyTommy vehicle before the pair split (also prev title = Middle Love). Adapted from a Y-novel.
Jade works as a graphic designer and has always been stuck in the middle - average. His heart is hardened after a life spent being overlooked because he is not as charming or good looking as the rest of his family or friends. When his office gets a hot new intern, Mai, Jade assumes Mai couldn’t possibly be intersted in him. Mai, of course, has other ideas.
Warning this is a Cheewin comedy so tonally it could be very OFF, but the cast is solid, and I have liked his stuff on occasion. I'm actually really looking forward to this.

Hi Petty! Totally random question that came to me...do you have any favorite series with obvious character color coding? And by obvious I mean like...Power Ranger color coding obvious.
TLWR: I can't answer this.
@negrowhat, This isn't random because you were just reblogging Y Destiny posts, and that show was Power Rangers color coded!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So it shouldn't be surprising that Y Destiny's director is Cheewin since most of Director Cheewin's shows are extremely color coded like Middleman's Love, You'll Never Eat Alone, and Bed Friend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And although Playboyy isn't unmistakably color coded, it still has color coding, and Cheewin won't let us forget that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hell, look at the description of his upcoming series Deep Night which states that "[The characters] aren't the only ones bringing colour to the club" so I'm guessing it, too, will be color coded.
Tumblr media
I think Cheewin really enjoys color coding, which is why Domundi continues to hire him since Domundi wants color coding in its shows like Cutie Pie and Naughty Babe! And it's probably why Cheewin gave me one of my favorite noticeably color-coded shows, Secret Crush on You, where Phaya and Dr. Cocomelon (as you call him) were the bestest color-coded friends ever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everyone was color coded in that show, even the fairy godmothers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But outside of Cheewin, I LOVED Destiny Seeker!
Tumblr media
Which is why it won a Colors Award for Best Group Effort since it played into the traditional way of color coding with the main characters, but gave the side couple an interesting color dynamic, then had the younger third couple color coordinate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was fascinating, and I wish it was more easily available internationally, so others could enjoy it!
Tumblr media
Japan leaned into obvious color coding with I Became a Lead in a BL Drama
Tumblr media
And I loved it!
Tumblr media
However, I also feel like another one of my favorite shows from Japan, My Love Mix-Up, was obviously color coded.
Tumblr media
While others seemed shocked by me stating that even though the promo material was color coded, which is something I found out after watching the entire series.
Tumblr media
So although I know what you're asking, it's slightly difficult for me to answer because (and this isn't me bragging), I find most color coding obvious, like in another color-coded favorite from Korea, Love Tractor, I understood it was color coded from the trailer, as I do many shows.
Tumblr media
Yet I got a few questions about it because others did NOT easily see that Yechan was a Green Guy and Yul was a Blue Boy even though I believed it was blatant color coding with no room for confusion.
Tumblr media
Much like how I picked up from the trailer of another favorite Korean series, The Eighth Sense, that Ji Hyun was light coded and Jae Won was dark coded. This shot was in the trailer with several others similar to this color scheme, yet it was just me out here seeing what I believed to be very recognizable color coding.
Tumblr media
So, to me, most color coding is Power-Rangers-level obvious. And I love seeing people slowly figure that out nine episodes in, when I had it pinned down before the first episode even began.
Tumblr media
Or in some cases, by the second episode because the first episode only showed the characters in uniforms or only had one scene with them.
Tumblr media
Which is why people are still flabbergasted that I knew Way and Charlie were lying without the subtitles even though Way, a blue teammate, looked like this in episode three of Pit Babe, and Charlie who supposed to a Blue Boy was red in the first episode.
Tumblr media
So to answer your question in the longest way possible, if a show has color coding, for the most part, it's obvious to me. I struggle sometimes figuring out what the colors mean like with The Sign and Last Twilight, but I still notice the colors, and it's funny since both shows use blue, green, and orange, which were the same colors I struggled with in Our Dating Sim since the orange threw me off (it represented uncertainty).
Tumblr media
I like writing about colors so much because what I think is Power-Rangers-level obvious is not obvious to others, and what I struggle with, some of you see clearly.
And I love when people tag me and say they noticed colors but "they were so obvious it was impossible to miss them" because it proves this point! Colors aren't obvious until we are actually paying attention to them. I'm positive someone watched Y Destiny and didn't even notice the colors. I'm just as confident people watched I Became a Lead in a BL Drama and didn't realize it was color coded.
And I hope you nor anyone else who reads this takes this is a mean-spirited dig about not noticing color coding. It's not much like my post about some folks not being able to tell the difference between Sprite and Zee in Twins. We don't notice the obvious when we aren't looking for it. You notice people's hands on others' throats. @colourme-feral notices locations. @dribs-and-drabbles notices clothing. Yet none of those things are obvious to me.
And that's why I can't really answer this question because the colors are obvious to me.
. . .
But Live in Love, if it gets made, will be Power Rangers color coded.
Tumblr media
That's obvious.
