Xiaomi Mi A2 Pros and Cons Review: Should You Buy It Or Not?
Xiaomi Mi A2 Pros and Cons Review
Xiaomi recently launched Mi A2 in India at a very competitive price point. The main highlights of the device are its camera but besides the camera, other specs equally matter. If the design doesn’t bother you and if you don’t play heavy games and do heavy stuff then you can purchase this device. If you want a good camera and an amazing processor at this price point then consider this phone. After using it for few times here we are with Pros and Cons of Mi A2, and we will tell you if you should buy this device or not.
Xiaomi Mi A2 Pros (Good Things):
1. Performance: Mi A2 comes with Snapdragon 660 processor paired with Adreno 512 GPU. Since Snapdragon is an Upper mid-range SOC, the performance of Mi A2 is good.
2. OS: The Mi A2 comes under the Android One program which means the software on the device will be supported by Google itself and will be updated quickly as soon as Google announces a new Android version. The stock UI is good and does not contain bloat.
3. Camera: The camera is the main highlight of this device. The camera is really good and is better than any other smartphone in this price range. The low-light photography is good too.
Xiaomi Mi A2 Cons (Bad Things):
1. Design: The design on the device is similar to other recently released Xiaomi devices and which looks boring and old. The lite variant of this device has a better design than Mi A2 itself.
2. Audio Jack: The Mi A2 doesn’t come with the 3.5mm headphone jack. So it will be a great disappointment to the music lovers.
3. Display: The display quality is good but the brightness is a little low. You will find a hard time trying to operate the device under the direct sunlight. There could be more brightness in the display.
4. Battery: The battery is a bit of disappointment here, first the battery is low capacity that is 3,010 mAh. The phone does come with Quick Charge 3.0 but the box doesn’t include a fast charger.

Redmi Note 7 Review
Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 full review Following a Chinese launch in January the Redmi Note 7 officially went on sale in the UK on 7 May, charging straight into the top spot in both our UK and Chinese budget phone charts, knocking the Mi A2 Lite off its perch. It's the first phone from newly spun-off Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi, and as such it marks a huge departure from Redmi as you know it.
Headlining is a 48Mp dual-lens camera, and Redmi Note 7 was actually the first Xiaomi phone to pack such a high megapixel count - though Mi 9 then came along and did it better. There are some similarities between this budget phone and Xiaomi's flagship, but Redmi Note 7 is much more closely aligned in specs and performance with the Oppo F11 Pro, another Chinese phone that has not yet gone on sale in the UK (and may not ever do so).
It's also got a large 6.3in Full-HD+ screen and promises all day runtime from a 4000mAh battery with Quick Charge 4 support. Plus some users will be very happy to see the inclusion of a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack.
Xiaomi has kept down costs by specifying a mid-range Snapdragon 660 chip and 3- or 4GB of RAM, allowing this budget Android to be available from as little as £179. That's for the 3GB RAM, 32GB storage model, while the 6GB RAM, 64GB storage model we review here costs £199. There's also a 128GB storage version at £249. You can choose from Space Black or Neptune Blue colour options.
Right now GearBest is offering an incredible deal on the entry-level 3GB/32GB option, where it costs just £113.54.
You can also buy Redmi Note 7 direct from Xiaomi, or from retailers such as Amazon. It will also be available on a contract basis from Vodafone.
The Redmi Note 7 is available in Europe from 179€, but if you're looking to buy in the US you'll need to import it from a site such as GearBest or Geekbuying. The latter is currently stocking the global version of the top-end Redmi Note 7 at the discounted price of £170.01/$209.99/185.57€. Do remember to take into account potential import duty fees, which is calculated at 20 percent of the value on the shipping paperwork.

Redmi Note 7 Design & Build Redmi Note 7 is not all that dissimilar in design to the flagship Mi 9, which packs a fractionally larger (6.39in) screen into an ever so slightly smaller chassis. Both have tall 19.5:9 panels and slim bezels - naturally slimmer on the Mi 9, but the only place this is really obvious to the untrained eye is on its smaller chin.
Each also feature a Dot Drop (waterdrop-style) notch to maximise the available screen space and house the selfie camera, which is more obvious on Mi 9 with its larger 20Mp sensor (Redmi Note 7 has a 13Mp front camera). There's also a blink-and-you'll-miss-it slit at the extreme edge between the screen and frame for the earpiece.
Around the back you'll find some more obvious differences, however, with a dual- rather than triple lens camera on the Redmi Note 7, the Redmi rather than Mi logo, and a physical fingerprint sensor. All members of the flagship Mi 9 family now use an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Arguably physical fingerprint sensors typically work better than these early in-display versions, and though it might be a fancy new feature to have the omission is not a game-changer.
Redmi Note 7 review
We tested the Black version so were unable to enjoy the gradient finish of the Blue model, but in pictures it looks gorgeous. With a glass back and front the Redmi Note 7 has a very premium design for a phone at this price point, and is only fractionally thicker than Xiaomi's flagship family at 8.1mm, though you will notice that glossy frame is plastic rather than metal. That extra space inside the case enables it to include a capacious 4,000mAh battery, too, matching the spec of the recently announced Mi 9T.
Something you won't find on Mi 9 phones (save for the Mi 9T) is the Redmi Note 7's 3.5mm headphone jack, which sits on the top edge of the phone alongside another increasingly rare feature: an IR blaster. While phone makers are rapidly making the switch over to USB-C audio, there are still plenty of users who want to use their existing earphones without an adaptor. Redmi Note 7 also has a bottom-firing mono speaker for audio.
At 6.3in the display is expansive, and ideal for watching high-resolution video and playing games. This is not the same AMOLED technology on Mi 9, but it's still good for the money, and actually nearly as bright - we recorded 398 nits using a Spyder. With a 2340x1080 Full-HD+ resolution everything is super-clear, too.
Although the Redmi Note 7 runs MIUI 10, on our review sample the system-wide Dark Mode setting found in the flagships is not available. It's possible this will come in the next update, with the Redmi running 10.3.2.0 and our Mi 9 running 10.3.3.0. This is useful not only because it seems to be the latest trend to do everything in Dark Mode, but because it drastically reduces the screen's impact on battery life.
The Redmi Note 7 also lacks the Ambient Display (always-on) mode found in Xiaomi flagships, which can additionally help you maintain battery life by reducing the frequency with which you feel you need to wake the phone to check the time or notifications. That could be an issue here, since Redmi Note 7 has the most ridiculous notification LED we've ever seen - it flashes up below the screen but is the tiniest little dot you could easily miss it completely.
Redmi Note 7 review
None of Xiaomi's current smartphone line-up is waterproof, though we wouldn't necessarily expect to find this feature at this price anyhow. Xiaomi also keeps down costs by excluding wireless charging from this phone, though it does support Quick Charge 4 and is supplied with a 10W USB-C charger in the box.
As with all Xiaomi phones you'll also find a silicon case is supplied, a nice touch given that these are not easily obtainable in UK High Street stores. The Note 7 does feature Gorilla Glass 5 to help protect it from scratches, but it is not infallible.
Redmi Note 7 Core Hardware & Performance The Note 7 is fitted with a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 14nm chip, which integrates an 850MHz Adreno 512 GPU. This is a step down from the also mid-range Snapdragon 712 and 730 found in the Mi 9 SE and 9T, but there's not a huge difference in performance - at least not anything the average user would be able to perceive - as you'll see in the comparison chart below.
You'll have seen this chip before, in the likes of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, Xiaomi Mi A2, Nokia 7 Plus, Samsung Galaxy A9, Elephone U Pro and so forth. It's quite a popular processor. And while Redmi Note 7 is not significantly faster than any of those other phones that use it, something you should note is that it is significantly cheaper.
The Redmi Note 7 offers capable - if not flagship - daily performance, and provided you don't turn up the detail too much some very playable framerates. In GFXBench's T-Rex and Manhattan tests we recorded 46- and 21fps, for example.
The 4000mAh battery inside is good for a day's use, but no more. In Geekbench 4's battery test we recorded 7 hours 16 minutes, which is actually a pretty middling score and a little lower than we had anticipated given the huge capacity of the battery.
As we mentioned earlier on in this review you get a choice of 3- or 4GB of RAM. We tested the latter, and this is the version we recommend for the best performance, especially when it costs only an extra £20.
Redmi Note 7 review
A major advantage of Redmi over Mi is its support for storage expansion, so there's no reason why you shouldn't opt for the lower-capacity version and bolt on extra storage later, if and when you need it. Redmi Note 7 can accept microSD cards up to 256GB via a hybrid SIM tray - you must choose between dual-SIM functionality and storage expansion. If you do opt for a second SIM instead, know that either SIM slot can be used for 4G data, but unlike with the Mi 9 family you can't use 4G on both at once.
In terms of connectivity there's also dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS and an IR blaster. You will not find NFC for making mobile payments, so if this is important to you step up to the Mi line.
Redmi Note 7 Cameras & Photography For a budget phone the Redmi Note 7's cameras are pretty good, though not quite as good as the marketing might have you believe.
The star of the show is a 48Mp lens that by default actually takes 12Mp shots. This is because it combines four pixels into one, averaging out the quality, exposure, colours and so on to create one significantly better-looking super pixel.
This is paired with a 5Mp secondary lens for blurred background (bokeh) shots, and together the Note 7 is capable of some decent - if a little dull - photography, given good lighting. Zoom right in and some noise is visible, but zoomed out the results are more than acceptable for a sub-£200 phone.
In low lighting the camera has more work to do, and even in Night mode it still struggles. Here you need to be really careful to keep the camera still for what feels like forever as it processes the shot. Though it did a good job of picking out different colours, including the different shades of black, text can be a little fuzzy and edges less well defined. Not a bad result, but equally not the best.
This is an AI camera, which means Xiaomi's software can intelligently set an appropriate preset for the shooting scenario. The app is very easy to use, and you can quickly switch between photo and video, Portrait, Night, Square, Panorama and Pro modes, and there's a shortcut for preinstalled Google Lens right within the app, too.
There's also an option to shoot in 48Mp, though all this is going to really do for you is gobble through your storage, since the results are not any better for the extra pixels.
The Redmi Note 7 supports 1080p video capture at 30- or 60fps with image stabilisation, but 4K and slow-mo video is off limits.
Around the front is a 13Mp AI camera for selfies, and in this mode the app offers quick access to various beauty settings.

Redmi Note 7 Software The Redmi Note 7 runs MIUI 10, which is a custom version of Android 9 Pie. Since we're using a Global ROM model it comes preinstalled with Google services and an English-language keyboard and interface, so setup is as simple as on any Android phone.
You will find Xiaomi offers its own version of most Google apps, which does mean there's some duplication here, and most cannot be deleted (or removed from the app tray-less home screen, though you can tuck them away in a folder where they will remain out of sight and out of mind). This is for good reason, since Chinese ROM MIUI devices don't have those Google apps. Some of these apps are pretty decent, however, so either use them, or don't - there's enough storage that you don't really need to worry about them.
Redmi Note 7 review
We noted earlier that the Redmi Note 7 currently lacks the Dark Mode and Ambient Display found on the Mi 9 family. The software is pretty much the same in other respects, and there are some great extras only found on Xiaomi phones such as Dual Apps and Second Space.
A Split-screen mode is also found in the recents menu, with is accessible either from the onscreen button or by swiping from the bottom of the screen and then pausing before lifting your finger in the gesture-only Full Display mode.
While the notification LED is so pathetic that you're likely to miss it completely, you do get individual app control over which are allowed to display notifications on the lock screen or float at the top of the screen, which means only the most important will be allowed to distract you. Finding your way around the settings may not be immediately obvious, however.
Redmi Note 7 Conclusion Redmi Note 7 is a very decent mid-range phone with a budget price. In the UK budget smartphone market none of its similarly priced rivals (think Mi A2 Lite, Honor 10 Lite, Moto G7 Power) even come close.
In design it's not all that far removed from Xiaomi's flagship, with a similarly large and almost as bright display, but it's not of quite the same quality. In performance most users would not be able to separate Redmi Note 7 and Mi 9 SE, and it's as capable as many phones costing £350.
Compared to the flagship line it adds microSD support and a headphone jack, but loses the wireless charging, in-display fingerprint sensor and NFC for mobile payments. The triple-lens camera is here reduced to a dual-lens model, but still has a huge 48Mp lens headlining.
On paper the capacious 4,000mAh battery looks amazing; in reality you should get a full day's use from it.

Conversations| IAP Detroit Participants Jasmine Rivera and June Bae
Mentor and Mentee share their experiences from the Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program.
Jasmine Rivera is a director, writer, producer, and actor from Detroit. Her films have been screened in film festivals around the country, winning numerous awards. Rivera’s latest narrative short, American Prophet, is set in 1968 Detroit and based on the true story of peacemaker Bishop Thomas Gumbleton.
For three months, Rivera generously shared her expertise, knowledge, and contacts with her talented, dedicated, and humorous mentee June Bae as part of the Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program: Detroit. Bae’s trajectory as a filmmaker went from what he calls “years of heartbreak in the advertising world,” to a leap of faith that granted him the “Audience Award” in the Detroit 48 Hour Film Project. We talked to both mentor and mentee about their relationship and the impact of IAP on their lives.
NYFA: Can you tell us about your experience participating on the Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program?
June Bae: The mentorship aspect of the program was a great experience. Jasmine really took me under her wing and took a lot of time and interest in the projects I was working on, helping me to develop my process and my practice as a filmmaker. She also took me to multiple events where she would walk me around to meet different individuals in the Detroit film community. All in all, it was great to have Jasmine in my corner. She was a fantastic mentor.
Jasmine Rivera: My experience as a mentor has been a great opportunity to get to know an inspiring filmmaker, June Bae, as well as a powerful community of rising and established immigrant artists in Detroit. With June, it was wonderful to meet a person who has a dedicated commitment to his craft, with a constant search for improvement and steady practice. I was very pleased to lend advice and connect June to other resources in the film community to supplement his projects. In turn, June's dedication helped me to stay on my own course in producing my films, and it was a great benefit to have a peer to discuss ideas and issues with.
NYFA: How did you interact with each other during the program?
JB: My interactions with my mentor happened in four ways. First, she attended NYFA sessions with me and made time to talk in between sessions or lunch to review the different topics of the day. Second, we would communicate via email, keeping each other updated with progress on projects or different film events happening in the area. Third, we would meet in-person where we would spend more in-depth time, typically discussing some questions I had about filmmaking or a specific project that I was working on. Last but not least, we would meet at different film events she would know about, often introducing me to different people in the local film community.
JR: During the program, June and I met periodically to discuss progress with work, and to attend events such as screenings and film industry gatherings. At the conclusion of the program, both June and I began attending a local filmmaker workshop where a group of peers offers constructive criticism and resource-sharing to members.
NYFA: As a mentee, did the Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program have any direct impact on your art practice?
JB: It definitely helped me understand the areas of my practice that I had questions about, specifically on the topic of how to find funding. I feel that it has helped me fine-tune the non-artistic areas of my practice that are necessary; helping me to become more holistic in my practice. I think a direct result of the program is the first narrative short film that I'm currently in pre-production for.
NYFA: What projects are you working on at the moment?
JB: I have a couple of projects in the works at the moment. The first one is a narrative short film that was funded by a non-profit organization. I actually took some of the things I learned from the NYFA program and implemented them in my own way to fit my circumstances. I had to do a bit of creative thinking because film funding is different from other art disciplines, as I've learned.
The second project is a music video that I'm working on with a local band called SIAS. I can't really talk too much about the project itself but another cool aspect of it is that I'll be collaborating with another artist that I met through this program, Manal Shoukair. She's a phenomenal visual artist and super stoked to have her part of the team. We also might possibly have another music video collaboration lined up after that.
Last but not least, I'm currently in the early stages of ideation for a new short film. This year has been packed with a lot of sponsored projects, which doesn't always allow for complete creative expression because you're doing it for some brand, group, or individual. I'm kind of burned out from all those projects so I feel the need to do something that I want to do. That's what this short film will do for me: breathe some personal creative expression back into my life.
JR: I am producing a series of short films titled Belle Isle Elegy to be shot in June of 2019. I am also working on a feature screenplay while producing a neighborhood political documentary series called Democracy Detroit as well as a short documentary titled Marcelina, which follows a Congressional Medal of Honor Filipino World War II veteran and her immigrant journey. As a co-founder of Final Girls, a Detroit-based women's filmmaker collective, I am helping to organize a series of educational workshops for local rising female-identifying filmmakers to promote the inclusion of women in the film industry.
NYFA: Can you give any advice or recommendations to artists from Detroit that are considering participating in this program?
JB: I would recommend this program to artists who are serious about trying to grow in their craft, and specifically to those who are trying to make their practice into a career, not a hobby. I would encourage participants to have an open mind and ask as many questions as they need to get as much out of the program as they can. Last but not least, I'd encourage participants to be proactive and engaged. Although at times some sessions are not specific to your discipline, you can still extract principles from it to then apply to your practice and further your career.
JR: I would advise future Detroit participants to take advantage of the program by both attending the set workshops as well as meeting independently with their mentors at events and industry gatherings in their respective disciplines. Because Detroit is smaller than other cities, attending events with mentors gives the mentee the opportunity to become familiar with key figures and resources that they may not be aware of. There are so many art and cultural offerings that are constantly in motion in Detroit; immersion in the community with someone who can act as a guide and advocate is invaluable.

Jasmine Rivera is a director, writer, producer, and actor from Detroit, MI. As a narrative filmmaker, she has written, directed, and produced media via her company Anawim Productions as well as four narrative films including Nain Rouge, which won thesis honors at Columbia University, numerous awards for Best Short Film and Best Director, and has been screened at film festivals around the country, including the Uptown/Detroit Independent Film Festival, Great Lakes International Film Festival, the Frankfort Film Festival, the Detroit Windsor International Film Festival, the Lake Michigan Film Competition, and Cinetopia International Film Festival. Her latest narrative short is American Prophet, set in 1968 Detroit and based on the true story of peacemaker Bishop Thomas Gumbleton. Rivera is the recipient of the Loreen Arbus Scholarship from the New York Women in Film and Television Organization, was a Junior Professional Media Fellow at the United Nations University, and a Detroit Sundance Screenwriters Lab Fellow. A recipient of the prestigious 2014 Kresge Arts Fellowship Award, she earned her Masters in Fine Arts in Film Directing at Columbia University in the City of New York.
June Bae is a filmmaker originally from Houston, TX. He moved to Detroit after graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in Screen Arts and Culture, a fancy term for film studies. His career began at a local news station creating the terrible jingle commercials we all despise. Soon after he experienced years of heartbreak in the advertising world where any hint of artistic expression was smothered. In an act of desperation, June participated in the Detroit 48 Hour Film Project where he somehow miraculously won an Audience Award. Since then his personal work has screened in festivals and showcases such as the PBS Reel 13, International Pancake Film Festival at the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Detroit, and the A2 Tech Film Showcase. His parents celebrate daily that he has a paying job.

Grateful Dreamer ~Rinne’s Long Day~ Part 9
Previously: Part 8.
Rinne: At Naru-chan’s suggestion, I decided to do what I could to prepare for the role.
Rinne’s room.
-10:30-
Rinne: ...That said, how exactly am I supposed to practice?
Mei: We have 4 hours before you have to leave for the audition. Let’s think how we can make the best use of that time.
Mei: At this point, since Manager hasn’t come, we can assume the audition is proceeding as scheduled today.
Mei: Do you have the audition script with you?
Rinne: Nope, can’t say that I do. They’re giving it to us when we get there.
Mei: That means you have a distinct advantage.
Rinne: What do you mean?
Mei: You’ve already experienced the audition countless times at this point. You’ve seen what’s in the script.
Rinne: Well, yeah, I suppose that’s true...
Mei: Whatever you can remember from that script, write it on this paper.
Rinne: Okay, I got it. Here I go.
Later.
Rinne: And I’m done!
Mei: Good work. The role you’re auditioning for is this girl, correct?
Rinne: Yep! I love her energy and her good cheer and her optimism!
Mei: It’s like she was written for you.
Rinne: Ehehehehe~
Mei: Then, acting as yourself should suffice.
Rinne: But, acting as myself always ends up harder than it sounds~ Every time, I always walk away thinking like, “Oh I should’ve done it like that instead”.
Mei: The result of nervousness.
Rinne: Yeah, exactly.
Mei: But if that’s the case, then it only goes to show how paramount it is that you prepare for the role. Doing that will help make you less nervous.
Rinne: Preparing for the role...
Mei: Do you not want to?
Rinne: It’s not that I don’t want to, but...Well, it seems unfair that I’m the only one that gets to do this.
Mei: Eh? Unfair?
Rinne: Well, the other auditioners, right? They’re seeing the script for the first time on site, right?
Rinne: So, it doesn’t seem fair that I get to take advantage of already knowing the script.
Mei: ...Rinne-san. You are an incomprehensibly pure soul.
Rinne: It’s just how I am~
Mei: It doesn’t change the fact that your circumstances are different from everyone else’s.
Rinne: I get that, but...
Mei: Rinne-san. Are you okay with never seeing tomorrow?
Mei: Are you okay with always being stuck like this?
Mei: Always repeating the same day, over and over. Are you okay with that?
Rinne: No, I don’t want that~ I definitely don’t want that!
Mei: That’s why you have to do what you can. You have to pass this audition, and that means preparing for it.
Rinne. ...Yeah. Yeah, you’re right. I got it! I’ll do everything I can!
-14:30-
Mei: It’s about time for you to go.
Mei: Rinne-san?
Rinne: Oh, Naru-chan! You surprised me...
Mei: Something on your mind?
Rinne: Mm. Just, the more I read through this script, the more I think I love this story.
Rinne: That’s why, I was wondering if there isn’t anything else I could do for it.
Mei: I see...Well, it’ll be meaningless if you’re late.
Rinne: Yeah, you’re right. I’ll be going now. Thanks for your time!
Mei: Do your best.
Living room.
-17:00-
The front door opens. Rinne walks in.
Rinne: I’m back~
Mei: Welcome back, Rinne-san. ...How did it go?
Rinne: It went well, I think!
Mei: That’s good. Then, it’s likely that you’ll pass the audition.
Rinne: Yeah...
Mei: What’s the matter? Did you make a mistake during the audition?
Rinne: No, it’s not that. Because of all my preparations, I felt more at ease this time than I ever have. I think I almost had it perfectly!
Rinne: But...the other auditioners were just as nervous as always.
Mei: ...
Rinne: Everyone else there loves “Do-Re-Mi-ng Under the Sky” too. When I think about that, I can’t help feeling guilty. It really is unfair of me, you know?
Mei: Indeed...
Rinne: Sorry, I don’t mean to whine about it.
Mei: No, it’s okay. It’s so we can see tomorrow. If we can do that, then there won’t be a problem.
Rinne: Yeah. Do you want to sleep in my room again tonight?
Mei: Yes. This time, I won’t fall asleep.
Rinne: Oh, I know! Tonight, let me play with you too!
Mei: I don’t mind but...Rinne-san, I don’t believe you'll be able to stay up that late.
Rinne: Ehehe, I’ll do my best!
To be continued...in Part 10.

Welcome to Best of Android 2018
As 2018 winds down, we wanted to take stock of all the amazing smartphones released in the past 12 months by honoring the best of the bunch in our annual Best of Android series. Over the next two weeks, we’ll be releasing articles discussing our winners in detail.
For our awards this year, we used a completely new structure to find the best of the best. We wanted to hand out awards to devices that truly earned it with observable advantages. That couldn’t just come from test results and rankings — we needed to get hands on. We redesigned our Best of Android awards process to achieve this from the ground up, applying our math skills to reward good phones, and minimizing outlier measurements that could throw things off.
We also brought in the ultimate authority on Android phones: you.
The test bench becomes a leading lab
Though it’s a little less visible this time around, our testing is now far more serious. We drew help from our friends in the industry to ramp this up, including display experts SpectraCal, digital imaging pros Imatest, the brains behind Geekbench (Primate Labs), and our colleagues at SoundGuys to run each phone through a super-deep performance gantlet. We’ve moved from a test bench to a lab that can even detect fraudulent benchmark performance you won’t get in the real world.
This year's crop of devices is exciting in ways that only the Android ecosystem can be.
We nearly tripled our candidates from last year, with a full 30 being tested. We had actually hoped to test more, but some models simply weren’t available. Others were disqualified if their replacements were released, or if they’re at the end of their retail lives.
Best of Android 2018: The candidates
Asus ROG Phone
Google Pixel 3
Google Pixel 3 XL
Honor 8X
Honor Play
HTC U12+
Huawei Mate 20
Huawei Mate 20 Pro
Huawei P20
Huawei P20 Pro
LG G7 ThinQ
LG V40 ThinQ
Motorola Moto Z3
Nokia 7.1
Nokia 8 Sirocco
OnePlus 6T
Oppo R17 Pro
Razer Phone 2
RED Hydrogen One
Samsung Galaxy Note 9
Samsung Galaxy S9
Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus
Sony Xperia XZ3
Vivo Nex
Vivo V11 Pro
Vivo X21
Xiaomi Black Shark
Xiaomi Mi 8
Xiaomi Mi A2
Xiaomi Pocophone F1
If your eyes glazed over a bit, don’t worry: many of those phones are designed for a certain niche. Each awards article will only deal with the handsets that truly excel in each category, which typically is about 5-7 models. If a phone was released and we couldn’t get it in for testing, it was entered into our Reader’s Choice bracket to do combat on equal footing.
24 phones enter, one remains after a month of head-to-head competition.
These are the award categories we considered:
Best smartphone of 2018
Best smartphone innovation of 2018
Best display 2018
Best audio 2018
Best performance 2018
Best battery 2018
Best camera 2018
Reader’s choice 2018 (will be determined Nov. 27)
Best gaming smartphone 2018
Best value phones 2018
We sincerely hope you enjoy our Best of Android content, and would love to hear back from you to figure out what we can improve next year. We didn’t have time to discuss every data point, but we left no stone unturned in our quest to provide you with the information you need.
All that we do is for our readers, and we hope to help you make the best decisions on your smartphone journey.

We have already seen this story countless times: a long-awaited smartphone is about to be released, the first tests complain that a single aspect of the device does not convince and discontent grows. We could call it “the cycle of hype,” and that’s exactly what happened with Xiaomi A3, the long-awaited low-cost smartphone from the Chinese company, sold at a price of around 230 dollars on the Banggood website.
Xiaomi Mi A3 is the Chinese company’s new Android One smartphone, so no MIUI and a more familiar Android interface. We saw it briefly in our preview a few days ago, between light and shadow, and a technical sheet that leaves room for some doubt. On all heads, the resolution of the display is only an HD + and the absence of the NFC chip for contactless payments, two compromises that are difficult to digest, at first sight, especially considering the list price set at 229 dollars.
In the last two years, the series has made its way into the segment, the Mi A1/Mi 5X and A2 Lite were the real best buy, and the Mi A3 carries on its shoulders the enormous weight of the predecessors’ success. This new model, therefore, has the daunting task of continuing the positive streak and keeping the Mi A Android One family name high. Will it succeed in the enterprise?
Xiaomi Mi A3 Package
The packaging of this Mi A3 does not offer great surprises; the sales package of the Mi A3 appears with a sober white cardboard featuring the name of the product and the Android One logo on the profiles while the front part shows the device in the 3 sales colors (pearl white, electric blue, and dark gray). Inside the package, we find the following equipment:
1 x Xiaomi Mi A3;
1 x Pin for removing the SIM tray;
1 x Silicone cover;
1 x Product warranty instructions and user guide;
1 x USB Type-C data charging/transfer cable;
1 x 5V-2A output wall charger (10W).
Before proceeding with the review, we report the SAR values of the product, as many are interested in the subject:
SAR limit 10g: 2 W / Kg SAR value head: 0.301 W / Kg SAR value body: 1.097 W / Kg (distance of 5 mm) SAR limit 1g: 1.6 W / Kg SAR value head: 1.03 W / Kg Body SAR value: 0.99 W / Kg (10 mm distance) Hotspot: 1.07 W / Kg (10 mm distance)
Xiaomi Mi A3 Construction and Ergonomics
The Mi A3 is a smartphone on the whole compact and continues on the road of devices that are not too large, powered by the Android One line.
The grip is also good, and the back cover is never too slippery. We must indeed praise Xiaomi in terms of build quality: the device is quite robust, the Chinese house used rather classic materials with Gorilla Glass 5 for the front and the back, while the side frame is made of plastic. Everything is enclosed in a body that is not too large, values that are within the average, and allow rather easy use with one hand, which I appreciated so much. Even the ergonomics benefit from these materials because the back, although it is prone to keep the fingerprints, is not very slippery and offers a good grip.
In hand, it is used easily; it is not too thick (8.47 mm), nor too heavy (about 173.8 grams). It is not waterproof, but it is however, optimally constructed, with the glass back and the polished plastic chassis, in the same color as the back. The design is very simple and pleasant, but not particularly original (you could confuse it with many other Xiaomi and Huawei already on the market).
Xiaomi Mi A3 has a size of 153.48 x 71.85 x 8.47 mm, for a weight of about 173.8 grams. The ergonomics are excellent, and the device can be used safely, even with one hand.
Only HD + Display That Behaves, But It’s Not In Shape
Let’s start with the component that, on paper, would seem the weakest: the display. The panel used is a 6.08-inch AMOLED with HD + resolution (1560 x 720p), a feature that does not find any marketing logic, also considering the PENTAI type matrix, lowering the effective final resolution by a further 1/3. Given the wide diagonal, the density is only 283 ppi, therefore much lower than what we are used to: with the naked eye, we can distinguish the pixels, and the vision of the elements is not defined, in particular, the texts.
The display is not the best, but in reality, the display is not so bad, indeed. The colors are good, the panel has high maximum brightness and can be seen really well even outdoors in direct sunlight. Certainly, a Full HD screen would have been more welcome; thus forgetting for a moment the cold numbers is not so penalizing. On the upper part where there is obviously a notch with a teardrop shape that contains the front 32MP camera is quite pronounced than the lower frame, which ruins the front aesthetic a bit.
However, you will be glad to know that the drop notch does not create any nuisance for notifications; they are always visible.
From the Mi A1, the fingerprint reader has always been capacitive and positioned on the back, on the Mi A3 it moves instead to the front and positioned below the display, thanks to the adoption of AMOLED technology. Right from the start, it proved to be quick and effective in unlocking without the need to press too much on the glass.
As the Mi A3 display has AMOLED technology, the viewing angles and responsiveness of the touch screen (10 points) are excellent. In a positive sense, it should also be noted that the frames do not cut portions of the display, such as on POCOPHONE F1.
In addition, there is also the unlocking with the face through 2D recognition of the front camera. This function is not yet present in the Android stock code, and this shows how the Android One system is different from Android stock.
Large Battery In Xiaomi Mi A3
Despite the low weight, Xiaomi has managed to integrate a 4030 mAh battery, certainly not obvious in the midrange scene. This large capacity combined with the AMOLED HD + display and the controlled consumption of the SoC makes the Mi A3 a champion in terms of battery life. It is really difficult to worry under this front and certainly more lasting than all its predecessors. One feels a little lack of certain MIUI software optimizations, but with this model, it is credible to think of spending a day and a half or two without ever recharging it.
Full charging of the Mi A3 takes about 2 hours with the supplied 10W charger, but the smartphone supports 18W fast charging.
Wireless Charging?
If you are wondering, I will answer immediately: NO, Xiaomi Mi A3 is not equipped with wireless charging, but never mind because the battery it comes with is a 4030 mAh unit.
Xiaomi Mi A3 Snapdragon 665 And UFS Memories 2.1
The SoC used in the Mi A3 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665, the successor of two excellent chips discussed and reviewed countless times: we are talking about the SD636 and SD660. If we look at the CPU alone it seems that little has changed, we always talk about Kryo 260 Gold, but with a production process that has gone from the 14 nm of the previous generation to the current 11 nm, this means a good performance boost without using too much battery consumption.
Mi A3 Performance & Benchmark
To accompany the new SoC, there are also 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. These last memories are from the UFS 2.1 and offer much higher performance than the EMMCs in the Mi A2. A faster internal memory allows access to data and, consequently, to applications. The only sore point I found on the GPU: the Adreno 610 is not so good, and in graphically demanding games like Asphalt 9, I noticed a bit of lag with the details set to the highest quality available. However, PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty Mobile played incredibly well without issues.
As already mentioned in the previous chapter, Mi A3 offers excellent performance and makes the software run flawlessly, even when using “heavy” apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Of course, all of us would have preferred that Xiaomi used the Snapdragon 710 processor (Xiaomi Mi CC9) rather than the Snapdragon 665 (Xiaomi Mi CC9e / Mi A3). However, we are still above the average and have not encountered any problems from this point of view.
For benchmark lovers, the device registered a total of 167004 points on AnTuTu. On Geekbench, on the other hand, it reached 315 points in single-core and 1419 points in multi-core while it scored 6692 in PCMark’s Work 2.0 Performance. To give you a concrete example, Samsung Galaxy A50, a smartphone that is sold at a price similar to Mi A3, had registered a total of 136009 points on AnTuTu. In short, the performance gap is not so high, but Xiaomi Mi A3 falls the same among the most performing smartphones in this price range.
Despite this, the 3.5 mm audio jack, the infrared port, is always present, and you can even expand the memory with a micro-sd. Through the side tray, you can still use two SIM cards at the same time and take advantage of the 4G Plus connectivity. Nothing to complain about on the reception front, in these days of use, it was always pleasant, and I never encountered problems on call.
Xiaomi Mi A3 Solid Android Stock 9 Pie
On the software front, objectively, there is not much to say. This is always the usual Xiaomi customization of Android One. We have already seen how the company intervened in some places to add some extra features. However, apart from unlocking it with the face and proprietary photo software, you still have a very stock usage experience similar to that available to many other Android One devices. Android One is virtually free of any additional features typical of custom UI, such as MIUI. But certainly those looking for such devices do so with a view to reliability and long-term longevity. At the moment, the device mounts the Android OS 9 Pie with security patches updated for October 5, 2019, and soon we could also see the upgrade to the new Android 10.
From some points of view, it is an asset. I have always been a great lover of minimalism typical of pure Android and believe that it is the most faithful experience and close to those that are Android’s capabilities. But on the other hand, we note some shortcomings that, on other customizations, are essential.
Triple Room, But The Gcam Makes The Difference
The photographic compartment of a smartphone is one of those features on which to focus during the purchase phase, and the new Xiaomi Mi A3 says it’s in the mid-range segment. As from “fashion” of the moment, we find a triple camera on the back that consists of a 48-megapixel Sony IMX582 sensor, f / 1.79 as the main module which is joined by an ultra-wide 8 megapixel module, Samsung S5KGD1 f / 2.2, FOV 118 ° and a sensor dedicated to the 2 megapixel depth, f / 2.4.
The shots captured by these lenses are detailed and have well-calibrated colors. Also noteworthy are the shots were taken with the Portrait mode, able to very well outline the subject in the foreground even if, in this case too often, the background will be “burned.” The 48 megapixels are exploited with manual mode while basic shooting in 12-megapixel resolution with the aid of Pixel Binning technology. At the software level, there are also gems like AI support for scene recognition, HDR (also automatic), and Night mode to better capture night shots, quite effective.
But Android One also offers the already active CAM2API, so you will only need to install a simple APK to enjoy the magic of GCam, albeit with some compromises. There are many working versions, but on some, the Wide lens does not work, on others the front camera, but in any case, you will have an alternative solution to the stock camera, which in some situations gives you decidedly professional shots.
Xiaomi’s photo software shows how his algorithm works well in different light conditions. In the daytime, the colors are brilliant, and the various parts of the photo are correctly exposed. The green shades are slightly too saturated, but they are still solvable problems with a little editing. The wide-angle instead didn’t convince me so much because of the low resolution.
At the selfie room level, we find a 32-megapixel sensor, f / 2.0 FOV 79 °, which also has functions like HDR and AI. Although there are so many megapixels in dowry, the yield is almost the same as that of other devices of the brand, that is, more than discreet in days but not very exciting in low light conditions. In particular, despite the disabled beauty effects, the software always tends to insert a sort of “halo” on the skin.
At the video level, we can record up to 4K resolution at 30 fps, while for 1080p, we can decide between 30 and 60 fps and H.264 or H.265 video encoding. There is no lack of features like Time Lapse and Slow Motion. Theoretically, electronic stabilization is available (only 1080/720 p 30 fps), but I did not find great benefits from it. Furthermore, in the fast pan phase, it is possible to see some deformations of the images, probably due to the software and therefore with a possible solution with future updates. In short, a good photographic industry voted better for the acquisition of photos rather than videos.
AAA Wanted NFC
I don’t find adequate justification for the absence of the NFC chip, which has now become more than important for the management of contactless payments. The only plausible explanation is the little use made of it in China and some other countries, where most transactions take place via third-party platforms like WeChat. In any case, the limit is there for us and it is obvious, certainly not pleasant, if we consider that the Mi A3 goes global.
Moreover, we must deal with increasingly well-equipped competition, a more demanding user, a growing smartphone offer. The mere fame of a successful series is not enough, especially if a brand has a portfolio of many other similar solutions that certainly appear more complete in terms of hardware.
Final Considerations
In my opinion, the Xiaomi Mi A3 is not an heir to the Mi A2 and does not even try to be one. It is more the successor of the Mi A2 Lite and is presented in a complicated price range, putting itself before the excellent Redmi Note 7 ( review ). None of the models just mentioned has the NFC, but it was from the time of the Mi A1 that they did not go under Full HD resolution, in this case, sacrificed to integrate an OLED and also allow unlocking on screen. A courageous choice, in my opinion, also dangerous.
Xiaomi, like others, makes war on its own with lots of devices at often similar prices. Certainly, the Mi A3 has from its experience the Android Stock; still much sought after by many users and added value for those who do not like MIUI customization. It will be interesting to see its positioning with the first online offers and, above all, to intercept an eventual Mi A3 Pro that can actually raise the shot and cover the most important gaps.
Unfortunately, the company has put this Mi A3 on the market at an illogical price, especially when compared to models of the same parent company. On the other hand, Redmi Note 7 costs less and offers a Full HD display or the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE (with a slightly higher cost) in addition to the higher resolution also offers the NFC. Fortunately, Banggood offers the Mi A3s at much more fair prices.

""Can I fight an auto insurance company, to prevent my car from being declared a total loss, in California?""
Its an older car but only has a small dent. I understand that its the value of the car vs their estimate of repairs that they are basing this on, but they didn't include options like A/C, cruise control, power door locks and power mirrors and others when figuring its worth. They instead based it on an average car in my area. When doing the math the difference between fixing the dent and totaling the car came out to $18.00. Clearly the addition of the options would have covered that spread in my favor. I want to fight this because I don't want to have a salvage title. I was not at fault and the other parties insurance has already sent me a check I have not cashed nor have I signed anything. I want to know what I can do. And if I am stuck with the total loss, do I have the right to recover for re-title and re-registration charges and smog fees that are going to add up to a few hundred out of my pocket since I am keeping the car. Thanks for taking the time to read my question.""
Medical Insurance Question?!?
I'm 24, and I've been reading a lot of posts online about people who have many health ailments and do not have insurance to get treated or go to the ER then have a massive bill afterwards. I don't understand why these individuals are not hunting around for the cheapest medical insurance they can find prior. There are individual plans out there, directly through the insurance companies, also family plans. You can pick and choose your premiums/deductibles/co-pays, hunt around for what suits your needs best. The single plans especially, can be and most of the time are, affordable. I don't understand why people do not apply for basic health insurance that would cover them in an emergency, or for general routine health-care. Premiums can be as low as 60-100 a month for a single person. Please can someone explain to me why these people are not taking advantage of what is out there? Or even possibly applying for the government assistance plans if they're not employed, especially after an ER visit with no insurance? This is an honest question. Thanks""

Affordable health insurance in NYC?
Hi, I am 30 years old and my wife and I had a combined income of approx $62,000 for 2006. In august of this year I will be quitting my full time job and going back to school full time. My current salary is $50,000. I anticipate making no more than $20,000 while in school and not being able to get health insurance through work. My income for 2007 will screw up my chances of getting most federal aid for the first year and will probably exclude me from healthy NY as well. Insurance through school is about $600 a month. I've gotten quotes of $513 to $1200 a month for my wife and I. All I want is catastrophic coverage in case either of us have any major problems or I have an accident while riding my motorcycle (a means of transportation, not a toy). These online quotes are driving me crazy. Where is the best place for me to look for something that will cover these specific conditions and how much should I expect to pay? Thanks in advance!!""

Isn't a lack of affordable health insurance merely a very late term abortion for Blue collar workers?
Alright, I'm being overly dramatic but what if, as head of household such an individual, without insurance, is treated to a very costly procedure and dies anyway? Why does it become necessary to bankrupt the remaining family as it often is? Why then, if Welfare is so frowned upon by the same opposition group to affordable health care (often referred as Universal health care by way of diversion)why is the mother, if she is unable to provide for her children often left homeless and left to wander the streets while they are given up for adoption? Why is this oft repeated scenario accepted by Christian voter or even wealthy atheists (ordinary ones, even) for whom there never may be enough money? This is a worst case scenario and actually happens in some cases. How does one address this issue? I've heard all of standard insults but I'd really appreciate an honest answer and I'm not at all in favor of universal health care for the indolent or the F--k 'em and forget 'em fathers everywhere or, for that matter, the largest group of Welfare recipients, save their unfortunate offspring.""

How much would I pay for my yearly motorcycle insurance?
Thank you for your time. I am a 18 year old freshman university student living in Canada and I am really interested in buying a new motorcycle. Car insurance and registration?
SO, I recently bought a car in New Jersey form a car dealer but didn't get the license plate for it because eI have a FL license and I need insurance. I rencety asked a friend for a recommended car insurance provider and he informed me that the car needs to be registered in FL to get FL insurance. Now, my questions is does it really need to be registered in FL to get FL insurance? because my license is a FL license, not a NJ one.""
How much will two speeding tickets increase my insurance?
I got a speeding ticket last year around the same time for 15 mph over and just received another (in a different state) for going 18 mph over. Also, I have another ticket from 3 years ago (will be 3 years in a couple weeks), so that shouldn't effect my insurance after that. I called my insurance company and asked them how much my insurance would increase with this new ticket. They said $11 over six months, so that equates to less than $2 a month, which is fine, but I'm just not sure how honest they are being with me. Another person from the insurance company told me my premiums would go up by atleast $10/month without calculating anything, which seems excessive. Do you think it will be closer to $2/mo or $10/mo increase?""

Why cant we have insurance on Auto Repairs. Where we pay a co-pay (like health insurance) or deductible and the auto shops are regulated by the insurance companies. We would pay more for cars that need more repair. Wouldnt it make automakers more interested in making a better car?
