As life expectancy at birth in the US decreased for the second consecutive year, from 78.8 years (2019) to 77.0 years (2020) and 76.1 years (2021), the gap between women and men widened to 5.8 years, its largest since 1996 and an increase from a low of 4.8 years in 2010.1,2 For more than a century, US women have outlived US men, attributable to lower cardiovascular and lung cancer death rates related largely to differences in smoking behavior.1,2 This study systematically examines the contributions of COVID-19 and other underlying causes of death to the widened gender life expectancy gap from 2010 to 2021.

Methods

Analyses were performed from March to July 2023 using Stata, version 17.0 (StataCorp LLC) and Office Excel (Microsoft). Using mortality data from the National Center for Health Statistics, this cross-sectional study examines the association of changes in cause-specific mortality with changes in the gap in life expectancy at birth between men and women from 2010 to 2021, divided by pre– and post–COVID-19 years. We used a decomposition technique to partition changes in the life expectancy gap between men and women into component additive parts that identify the causes of death having the greatest assocation, positive or negative, with changes in life expectancy.3 Cause of death categories are based on the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision. For further specificity, we partitioned changes in unintentional injuries into select components (unintentional poisoning [mostly drug overdose], unintentional transport-related injuries, and all other injuries). We estimated the differences between men and women in the age-adjusted death rates for the top causes of death associated with changes in the life expectancy gender gap. This study was exempt from review from the Harvard Longwood Campus institutional review board, and informed consent was not required because this study used deidentified data. This study followed the STROBE reporting guideline.

Results

The gender life expectancy gap increased 0.23 years from 2010 to 2019 and 0.70 years from 2019 to 2021. Prior to COVID-19 in 2020, the largest contributors to worsening life expectancy for men vs women were unintentional injuries (−0.23 years [−0.23246/−0.5116 = 45.4%]), diabetes (−0.05 years [10.1%]), suicide (−0.04 years [7.8%]), homicide (−0.03 years [5.3%]), and heart disease (−0.03 years [4.9%]) (Figure, A). This was offset by differential improvement for men vs women in mortality from cancer (0.12 years [43.1%]), Alzheimer disease (0.06 years [20.5%]), and chronic lower respiratory disease (0.04 years [12.3%]), among others.

From 2019 to 2021, COVID-19 became the leading contributor to the widening gender life expectancy gap (−0.33 years [39.8%]) followed by unintentional injuries (−0.27 years [32.5%]) (Figure, B). The increasing maternal deaths among women and the relative reductions in cancer and perinatal conditions among men partially mitigated the increasing gap (Figure, B). From 2010 to 2021, unintentional poisonings (mostly drug overdoses) and unintentional transport-related injuries contributed 0.44 (86.3%) and 0.06 (11.8%) of the 0.51-year decrease in life expectancy from unintentional injuries. The absolute difference in age-adjusted death rates between men and women increased from 252 to 315 per 100 000 between 2010 and 2021, with a persistent gap for heart disease and widening gaps for COVID-19, unintentional injuries, and several other causes (Table).

Discussion

This analysis finds that COVID-19 and the drug-overdose epidemic were major contributors to the widening gender gap in life expectancy in recent years. Men experienced higher COVID-19 death rates for likely multifactorial reasons, including higher burden of comorbidities and differences in health behaviors and socioeconomic factors, such as labor force participation, incarceration, and homelessness.4,5 Differentially worsening mortality from diabetes, heart disease, homicide, and suicide suggest that chronic metabolic disease and mental illness may also contribute. The increase in overdose deaths, homicide, and suicide underscore twin crises of deaths from despair and firearm violence.6 Limitations include binary gender classification and unexplored heterogeneity within disease classifications and across geographic and demographic subgroups. Future analyses could explore whether these trends changed after 2021, especially as the pandemic recedes, with further detail on specific causes.

The term "Pornification" on social media describes the increasing prevalence and normalization of sexually suggestive or explicit content across a range of channels. There is discussion and worry about this phenomenon, particularly in considering its effects on youth audiences, society, and mental health. 

Pornographic material describes the pervasive domination of erotic ideals, aesthetics, and imagery in popular culture, as well as how these factors generally affect interpersonal interactions. Pornography has become an excellent marketing tool thanks to the mixture of the popularised phrase "sex sells" and the extensive use of lifestyle branding. According to The International Encyclopaedia of Human Sexuality (2015), the pornographic movement that trivializes violence and sexualizes children and teenagers is partly to blame for this phenomenon's rise to controversy. 

Since the invention of the Internet, numerous possible online sexual behaviors have been made possible (Griffiths, 2012). Sharing and gaining access to obscene content is now simpler than ever because of the widespread use of cell phones and high-speed Internet. Adults and kids alike will readily come across any pornographic information on social media platforms. Some people or groups may create and distribute pornographic material on social media platforms in an effort to increase their following and likes, as well as to eventually generate income from their account, due to the widespread popularity of the term "porn". This is a fairly typical issue in today's world when people are blackmailed by others using clips that contain sensitive stuff.

Pornographic content is allowed on an increasing number of social media sites, particularly in the modern day. One of the biggest social media networks in the world, Instagram, has had problems with pornography. Although Instagram has community standards and material management in place, there are still instances of sexually explicit or suggestive content on the platform. One of the sites with the highest concentration of sexual content is Twitter. Because of the social network's more lenient stance on explicit content, pornographic content is shared and promoted on the site. As long as it is labeled as sensitive information and conforms with Twitter's guidelines, users are free to share explicit and nude content. OnlyFans, a platform that blurs the boundaries between social media and adult entertainment, has gained popularity as a means for creators to interact with sexually explicit material directly with subscribers despite not being a regular social media platform.

When people see this "pornographic" information, they experience specific impacts. Pornography allows them to engage in the risk-free ideal of self-soothing and excitement through controllably establishing a connection with a non-threatening lady. independent (Malamuth, 2005). On the other hand, frequent encounters with pornography can cause desensitization, a condition in which people grow reduced receptive to sexually explicit material over time and require more severe, bizarre, or unique content to arouse them to the same degree. People are frequently objectified in pornography, particularly women, who are reduced to simply sexy commodities instead of complex human beings. Pornography also frequently presents inaccurate ideals about sexual behavior and body standards, which objectifies people and creates excessive expectations about sexual performance and physical beauty. Frequent exposure to pornography has been linked to mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and negative body image.

No estudo de Grady et al. (2023) demonstrou-se que o uso de Inibidores da Bomba de Prótons (IBPs) de maneira profilática em cães com Doença Renal Crônica (DRC) para prevenção de ulceração gástrica não é recomendado, exceto se houver presença de condições clínicas que justifiquem a prescrição, assim como preconizado nas diretrizes atuais do American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine - ACVIM (Colégio Americano de Medicina Interna Veterinária), que recomenda que os IBPs são indicados quando há sinais de sangramento em trato gastrointestinal (MARKS et al, 2018).

Esta contraindicação do uso profilático de IBPs no estudo é embasada no fato de que os dados estatísticos dos cães idosos (10 anos de idade) com DRC (n= 13) demonstraram que os pacientes doentes em estágio I a II da classificação da International Renal Interest Society - IRIS (Sociedade Internacional de Interesse Renal) não tinham pH gástrico mais baixo ou concentrações séricas mais altas de gastrina em comparação com cães saudáveis, corroborando com as orientações das atuais diretrizes do ACVIM.

Em cães com DRC e sinais gastrointestinais, como vômito ou disorexia, medicamentos antieméticos devem ser considerados primeiro, pois outros fatores, como toxinas urêmicas aumentadas ou substâncias emetogênicas de ação central são as causas mais prováveis desses sinais clínicos. Por fim, são necessárias mais pesquisas para determinar a prevalência e a patogênese da ulceração gastrointestinal em cães com DRC. Com base no estudo de Grady et al. (2023), a hiperacidez gástrica provavelmente não é a causa da ulceração, outras anormalidades observadas em cães com DRC, como superfície da mucosa gástrica alterada e mudanças microvasculares gástricas, devem ser consideradas (Peter et al, 2005; CHEVILLE et al, 1979; Stanton ME, Bright RM, 1989). Enquanto isso, a supressão ácida deve ser restrita a cães com DRC que têm fatores de risco adicionais para ulceração ou têm evidências de sangramento gastrointestinal, como hematêmese, melena ou anemia de deficiência (MARKS et al, 2018).

Uma limitação deste estudo foi que um pequeno grupo de cães foi avaliado e apenas a metade dos cães apresentava doenças avançadas (ou seja, estágios IRIS III a IV). Marcel Bloch, commonly known as Marcel Dassault, was born on 22 January 1892. He was a French industrialist who spent his career in aircraft manufacturing.

Bloch was born in Paris. His parents were Jewish. He was educated at Lycée Condorcet in Paris. After studies in Electrical Engineering he graduated from the Breguet School and Supaéro. At the latter school Bloch was classmates with a Russian student named Mikhail Gurevich who would later be instrumental in the creation of the MiG aircraft series.

Bloch worked at the French Aeronautics Research Laboratory at Chalais-Meudon during World War I and invented a type of aircraft propeller subsequently used by the French army during the conflict. In 1916, with Henry Potez and Louis Coroller, he formed a company, the Société d'Études Aéronautiques to produce the SEA series of fighters.

In 1928 Bloch founded the aircraft company Société des Avions Marcel Bloch, which produced its first aircraft in 1930.

In 1935 Bloch and Henry Potez entered into an agreement to buy Société Aérienne Bordelaise (SAB). In 1936 the company was nationalized as the Société Nationale de Constructions Aéronautiques du Sud Ouest (SNCASO). Bloch agreed to become the delegated administrator of the Minister for Air.

During the occupation of France by Nazi Germany during World War II, France’s aviation industry was virtually disbanded, other than the compulsory manufacturing, assembly and servicing of German designs. In October 1940, Bloch refused to collaborate with the Germans occupiers at Bordeaux-Aéronautique and was imprisoned by the Vichy government. In 1944 the Nazis deported Bloch to the Buchenwald concentration camp, as punishment for refusing to co-operate with their regime. He was tortured and beaten and held in solitary confinement. In the meantime his wife was interned near Paris. Bloch was detained at Buchenwald until it was liberated on 11 April 1945. By the time of his return to Paris he was crippled to such an extent that he could barely walk. He was advised by his doctors to settle his affairs, as they did not expect him to recover his health.

After the war he changed his name from Bloch to Bloch-Dassault and in 1949 to Dassault. Dassault was the nom de guerre used by his brother, General Darius Paul Bloch, when he served in the French resistance, and is derived from char d'assaut, French for "battle tank". In 1971 Dassault acquired Breguet, forming Avions Marcel Dassault-Breguet Aviation (AMD-BA).

In The Adventures of Tintin book Flight 714 to Sydney, Dassault is parodied as the aircraft construction tycoon Laszlo Carreidas - "the millionaire who never laughs", who offers Tintin, Captain Haddock and Professor Calculus his personal jet, the Carreidas 160, to travel to Sydney.

Marcel Dassault died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1986 and was buried in the Passy Cemetery in the 16th arrondissement of Paris.

In 1973, Dassault was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame.

Serge Dassault, Marcel's son, became CEO of Avions Marcel Dassault, which was restructured as Groupe Industriel Marcel Dassault, reflecting its broader interests. In 1990, the aviation division was renamed Dassault Aviation.

In 1991, the rond-point des Champs-Elysées was renamed the ���rond-point des Champs-Elysées-Marcel Dassault” in his honor.
