A Glimpse of Us

Author’s Notes

This week was @lizzybeth1986​ ‘s birthday and I wanted to write her a little something for this! This isn’t much but it’s made with love <3. This explores my MC Eclipsa and Liam’s friendship, as well as a glimpse of Fabian and my TRM MC, Olive, and their platonic marriage. 

BTW, I made a few winks to several Renaissance queens in the fic, lmk if you spot them!! 

English is not my first language, so please forgive any typos/ grammar mistakes

When the security guard saw the new king enter the private collection of the Cordonian Museum, he was flabbergasted to say the least. Liam greeted him and told him he was expecting company and kindly asked for an hour so they wouldn’t be disturbed. The guard eagerly accepted.

He observed the section dedicated to the Cordonian Renaissance, marvelling at the many beautiful paintings and statues, among them a portrait of King Edward, who was then prince. He must’ve been at least five, and was dressed in adult garments of children. He had warm brown skin and soft features, not touched yet by time and royal training. He certainly resembled the queen. Historians of the century had now saved a few letters that revealed the magnificent queen’s true nature: like his Lipsa, she too had loved women, though hadn’t been lucky to love freely her beloved female guard, Kayden. He then observed a personal portrait of Queen Olive that had been revealed during the Regency era, in 1814 to be exact by his ancestor, King Lionel II, who, like many monarchs following Napoleon’s example, wanted to bring back the splendour of the Renaissance and Ancient Rome back by any means. The Queen in that portrait was in state of undress, only her dressing gown on, that was slowly falling from her shoulders. Her raven hair was down, and my, was it long! The curls went far away from the painter’s sight, and indeed, it had been said that Olive’s hair was so long, that during her coronation, she could sit on it. She had a small smile on her face, and fondness on her eyes. Unlike his ancestor, Liam knew that the King and Queen never loved one another. He had grown up with legends of the magnificent monarchs’ supposed love, joined by a strong sense of duty to the country.

Poor Olive had been the true power behind her reign over Cordonia, from 1600 to 1617, dying of a stroke at the age of 38. Fabian took the reins and ended Olive’s work. It had been a time of peace, but everyone agreed that the old king missed dearly his queen, and that nostalgia was passed on their only child, Edward, who followed into his parents’ footsteps. He then noticed a familiar figure behind him. His heart was beating faster and the hairs on the nape of his neck stirred. How long it’d take for him to stop reacting like this? She was a promised woman, for heaven’s sake! He couldn’t do this to Hana, who definitely deserved love and be loved back after all the neglect and suffering.

“When you look at the painting,” Eclipsa finally spoke “what do you see?”

“A bond between man and wife,” Liam smiled “a bond that surpasses many. The unification of duty and peace. And you, Eclipsa?”

He finally dared turning around, and saw her beautiful brown skin, basking in the moonlight, her warm brown eyes and her blonde hair. It was very unusual for someone to combine brown with blonde, but this was Eclipsa! If someone could make it look ethereal, that was her. Her eyes narrowed as she pursed her lips together, signs of concentration. Her nose also scrunched, and he wondered if Hana noticed it. He was sure she did.

“I see fondness and a certain intimacy. But… there’s something in her eyes that speaks to me. She appreciates and respects Fabian, but she cannot bring herself to love him as her husband. The sad glint in her eyes and the way her shoulders slump… I know the feeling.” She then looked at him and bit her lip “You and I… I adore you, and you’re the best man I’ve ever met, but we would’ve been miserable, Liam.”

He winced and closed his eyes “I—I know that now, Lipsa.”

She took his hand and he gasped “When you proposed, for a moment, I considered it. I closed my eyes and asked my head and heart to tell me what would happen if I said yes despite my heart’s cries. We would’ve worked, but—,”

“I would’ve made you miserable, you’d end up hating me and—,” He exhaled shakily “I wouldn’t have forgiven myself. I’d rather be alone than hurting the woman I love the most on earth.”

She placed a hand on his cheek “There is no world or alternate universe where I would hate you, Liam Rys. You know that, right?”

He nodded, and both stared at the beautiful and deep painting. Liam looked back at Eclipsa and squeezed her hand “I hope that I am not in the way of you having your happily ever after.”

Eclipsa smiled and shook her head “Of course not. You are a part of my heart, Liam. You’re my best friend in the world, and my soulmate. I don’t know if you feel the same—,”

“I do. How could I not? I could marry seven times and none would have the place in my heart that you have, Lipsa.”

Eclipsa’s eyes softened and both stared at one another “I owe you so many things. I wish I could take back the pain I’ve caused you in your heart.”

“I’m not in pain, Eclipsa. It’s certainly not easy, but you’re not making me miserable. I promise, it’s not what you think. I will be alright. You ought to worry about having the best wedding, not fretting over a poor king.”

“That poor king is my friend, and I feel responsible for it. Don’t let my rejection ruin you and your best years. Promise me, once healed, you’ll give it a chance.” She was squeezing his hands and looking at him in the eyes “Liam, I beg you.”

“I will.”

They hugged, and he closed his eyes, basking into her perfume and forgetting for once the weight in his heart since the words spoken by the woman hugging him pierced his heart.

23rd of March, 1610

Olive closed her eyes, basking into the morning sunlight, warm and welcoming. She could hear her son training outside, and the brush of her husband touching the canvas. She looked back at Fabian, who was biting his lip in concentration. They locked eyes and he teasingly said “Do not move or I’ll end up giving you a nose the size of Sardinia!”

They both laughed. Olive looked again through the window, where Kayden taught Edward how to do a good stance. They locked eyes and she smiled at her, and Kayden’s eyes softened at the sight of her queen.

“Ahem. Olive?” Fabian called. Olive looked back at him and raised her eyebrows in question “I had been wondering… had I been a woman, would you… have given me a chance?”

Olive chuckled and nodded negatively “Woman or not, my heart is Kayden’s. Not even Aphrodite herself would’ve made me change my mind about her.” She sighed “Sometimes I hate the way God created me. I wish I could rip off my poor, needy heart and let my head reign.”

Fabian left the easel and placed his hands on her shoulders “I remember a wise woman told me once that love, passion and devotion are a part of the human experience, and that to love and be loved back was the reason she had endured for so long.” He squeezed her shoulders “You are a wonderful woman; kind, devout, passionate, intelligent, and with a heart of gold. Kayden, Cordonia, and I are thankful that you are here in our lives. We wouldn’t want you any other way.”

Tears rolled down Olive’s cheeks and Fabian embraced his wife, and she asked between sobs “Do I make you miserable, Fabian?”

He wiped her tears and smiled “Never, Olive. I’ve yet to find a woman like yourself in my lifetime. I knew what I was doing when I proposed this arrangement, and I would do it again. Not many men can say they’ve married their best friend. If so, I should be asking you if I make you miserable.”

“Of course not, Fabian. No matter how many times my mind wanders, I wouldn’t take back my decision. I know I did well. Duty is sacrifice, is it not?”

Fabian smiled and arranged a wild strand of hair on Olive’s face “Just promise me you’ll allow yourself to have some joy with her. You’re the best queen we’ve had in a while, and I can handle the kingdom well until you get back.”

Olive kissed his cheek “I will think of such generous offer. Now, get back to painting, Your Majesty.”

“As you command, my queen.” He laughed.

Back in the present, when Eclipsa broke apart, she whispered “If it helps, I don’t think Olive was that miserable. They seemed to have a strong bond and a better relationship than many of their descendants. Besides, it’d be impossible to be unhappy by your side, Liam.”

Liam smiled for a brief moment “Thank you. It means the world to me, Eclipsa.”

She was about to say something when a big yawn came to her and she covered her mouth. They both looked at one another before breaking into laughter “Good Lord,” Liam laughed “it’s nearly two in the morning. We ought to go back before anyone worries.”

Eclipsa checked her phone and giggled “Bertrand’s already had seven aneurysms.”

They laughed again. He, too, had missing calls from Bastien and Drake, which made them get out of the museum and both parted ways. Liam looked back at Eclipsa’s black clothes vanishing from his sights and smiled for a brief moment. Maybe his romantic feelings would go away, but he was sure that he’d love her in another way for a very, very long time.

Maybe they had been meant to meet and have a jolly good time, but he was not Fabian, and she was not Olive, but what he lived and felt made him relate to the 500-year-old king very much, catching in his marriage a glimpse of them.

Calypso Legend And Civil Rights Icon Harry Belafonte's Influence on Hip-Hop

Today we lost a legend, a civil rights icon, and a musical pioneer. Harry Belafonte died at the age of 96 on April 25, 2023 of congestive heart failure in his New York City home. Harry Belafonte's Musical Influence Belafonte was known for his influence on folk and blues, but was most known for making calypso music popular. However, the Harlem native made an imprint on hip-hop culture as well. 1984 Hip-Hop Film "Beat Street," Which Belafonte Was The Executive Producer The "Jump In The Line" singer executive produced Beat Street. Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five wrote the theme song for the 1984 hip-hop film. It was one of the first movies, which starred Guy Davis and Jon Chardiet, about break-dancing and hip-hop culture. It focused on an aspiring DJ from the Bronx and his best friend, a promoter. The pair tried to get into the industry by educating people on hip-hop and the culture of the genre. He even helped bring three of hip-hop's earliest female rappers together for a vital part in the movie, MC She Rock, Debbie D., and Lisa Lee. The Legend's Hits Sampled On Hip-Hop Records Hip-hop artists have also sampled the legend's music. Pitbull, T-Pain, and Sean Paul's "Shake Senora," Doja Cat's "Won't Bite" featuring Smino, and Lil Wayne's "6 Foot, 7 Foot" featuring Cory Gunz. In addition, Jason Derulo's pop hit "Don't Wanna Go Home" - samples the calypso singer's "Day-O (Banana Boat Song)." Harry Vs. Jay-Z Belafonte has even had a feud with Jay-Z about handling social issues. We know the civil rights icon worked with the great Martin Luther King Jr. - so of course he was not holding back on the New York rapper. The entertainer said in 2012 before concluding their beef in 2015, “I think one of the great abuses of this modern time is that we should have had such high-profile artists, powerful celebrities. But they have turned their back on social responsibility. That goes for Jay Z and Beyoncé, for example.” Hov's response was a diss in a song and talking about his prescence being "charity." "We Are The World," With The Help Of Harry Belafonte Harry Belafonte was a trailblazer that played an important part in history. He worked on iconic song, "We Are The World." Many know that Quincy Jones was the mastermind behind the charity single, but Belafonte was a key part in the preparation. He contacted entertainment manager Ken Kragen, who gave us Lionel Richie, Kenny Rogers and Stevie Wonder to add to this iconic hit. The trailblazer will be missed. Hehehe, I’m back with the weekly football question (jk), I’m actually curious about which players do you think have the best personality according to their birth chart? Like which ones do you see and go damn, they’re lucky Or the ones that you think you would get on well with/relate to the most? 🥺💗💗

best personality, by experience and by chart, of course has to be lionel messi's cuz he's the GOAT at everything. 😉🙌💙

CHART ANALYSIS:

lots of cancer placements, giving him a soft-hearted, family-oriented and caring nature. cancer is touchy-feely. we know he is introverted/taciturn (mercury retrograde) and sensitive if not teary, the chart says the same. messi is THE prototypical cancer in football.

gemini moon giving him that smart edge, but softened by a venus conjunction that adds sweetness to rapid intellect.

jupiter and pluto are in great dignity, making him a great athlete (aries jupiter) and born celebrity (10th house pluto). in that sense, he is super lucky.

mars is in detriment. he will dislike being an offensive and pushy character.

chart ruler uranus in the 11th house. another celebrity placement, making him a great friend on top of that since uranus is naturally at home in the 11th.

...it goes on and on. his whole chart says he's extremely likeable, and his level of decade-long fame and adoration tells the same story. messi has a great chart.

as for the second question: most relatable player for me would be nikki süle! his looks and personality are the opposite. he seems tall and scary but is very laid-back & level-headed once you know him.

godfrey: sucks for a lot of reasons but he committed the worst crime imaginable: being from england. 0/10.

king kyle maclachlan: yeah yeah his name is constantine but looking like kyle maclachlan is his only redeeming quality so. lame, royal, didn’t care about his kids, slutshamed mc, died the cringe and fail death of being crushed by falling rubble. 0.5/10.

regina: is this old bat still alive? genuine question. 1/10.

lorelai lee: fuck you for how you treat(ed) hana. 1.5/10.

mc’s mystery parents: either dead or just don’t care that their daughter moved to a foreign country, got married, had several attempts made on her life, had a kid, became a duchess and possibly a queen, had a movie made about her, and obtained several fancy hats. if it’s the latter then they have the potential to be the funniest characters of all time but if it’s the former that’s just boring. 2/10.

barthelemy beaumont: as a person with morals and a bertrand stannie, i give him a 0/10. however, as a lover of chaos and comedy, i have to give credit where credit is due and award a full 10/10. he committed regicide, pretended to be in a coma for two decades so he could do evil schemes instead of raising his kids, bankrupted his family on said schemes and then claimed it was because he kept trying miracle cures, decided to come back onto the scene by crashing his son’s rehearsal dinner and announcing that he was cured, blackmailed and kidnapped various royals so he could obtain custody of mc’s child, and his weakness is crows. say what you will about the guy but he’s committed to the bit. overall i think that’s like, a 2.5 or something.

emmeline ebrim: was fun until it turned out she was part of the evil cult and therefore everything she did in the past few books made her fake as hell. still a milf though. 3/10.

lionel nevrakis: shitty dad and can’t even do a successful coup, but i respect the feminism of taking his wife’s name. also i really like his scar. 3.5/10.

milf adelaide: objectively too high in this ranking given that she gave madeleine about fifty complexes and betrayed you several times, but she was the first milf in the series and she’ll always have a special place in my heart for that. nothing like an older woman who just wants to party. 3.8/10.

camellia nevrakis: shitty mother but sexy as hell and hated king kyle maclachlan. credit where credit is due. 4/10.

xinghai lee: the whole “unconditionally supporting his wife” thing would be nice if it was for anything other than allowing her to mistreat hana. 4.2/10.

landon ebrim: absolutely useless in every situation and kind of two faced but he doesn’t seem to be actively evil. mostly he’s just dumber than a sack of bricks. a solid 5/10.

annabelle beaumont: dead and hasn’t appeared in any flashback scenes so it’s hard to know, but maxwell used to be a mama’s boy which is good enough for me. 5.5/10.

bianca walker: much like her daughter, she’s really fucking boring, but she seems nice enough and apparently makes good coffee. also i know that she had “”fallen out of favour”” and it was their choice to stay in cordonia but ditching her children in a foreign country not long after their dad died is kind of a low blow. however it’s also pretty funny. 6/10.

hakim theron: loses points for being friends with king kyle maclachlan for years and not supporting ezekiel’s vet dreams, but overall a nice man who cares about his kids. also one of the few parents in this series who hasn’t tried to ruin mc’s life. 7/10.

drake’s dead dad: all the flashback scenes suggest that jackson was a cool guy, even if i don’t support his choice in career. bonus points for his untimely death kicking off the comedy of errors that is drake’s life. nice ass, sorry you died protecting nobility. 8/10.

queen eleanor: we only get her in flashbacks but she has yet to disappoint. cared for her son but also his ragtag group of besties, something her cringefail husband couldn’t do. will be heartbroken if we find out that she was up to evil shenanigans in the royal finale. kind of shitty that it took a bunch of idiots stumbling onto things for someone to solve her murder but cordonia isn’t known for being competent. the secret daughter thing was kind of wild and i sort of hope we never get any context for it. hope she found a better spouse in the afterlife. 9/10.

joelle theron: loves her children equally, loyal to mc and everyone in the cordonian crew, doesn’t appear to be part of any secret groups and didn’t play a role in any fail coups, cares more about art than she does boring royal stuff, total milf. would hang up one of her paintings on my wall. 10/10.

Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron. YA Cinderella retelling with a Black lesbian main character! It's 200 years after Cinderella's death, and her story is being used by the tyrannical king to basically force women to attend a ball where they are 'chosen' as wives, in a parody of Cinderella's story. Our MC Sophia has had enough!

You Should See Me In a Crown by Leah Johnson. YA with a Black main character! Liz wants to leave her small town but in order to do that she needs to win prom queen to get a scholarship. But maybe her competitor for prom queen is kinda cute...? 🤔

The Falling In Love Montage by Ciara Smyth. Two girls go on a summer of montage-worthy dates and plan to break it off cleanly at the end of the summer- no broken hearts, no mess. Except maybe they develop feelings...? 👀

The Stars and the Blackness Between Them by Junauda Petrus. I just made a post about this so I'll just paste what I said about it here! This tells the stort of a Trinidadian girl, Audre, sent to live in Minneapolis after her mum catches her having sex with a girl. There she meets Mabel, who is questioning her own sexuality and the two become friends and maybe more? A super sweet YA Black girl romance!

Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera. Juliet, a self-described Puerto-Rican baby dyke from the Bronx, just came out to her family, and is leaving for the summer to be an intern in Portland to this hippy white woman. What follows is an exploration of Juliet's own identity, of intersectional feminism, LGBT issues, race and the need for spaces exclusively for women of colour. Just an excellent book.

Disoriental by Négar Djavadi. I haven't read this YET (it's waiting on my shelf) but I've heard so many incredible things. It's written by a French-Iranian woman and translated into English (I think we should all be reading more translated fiction). I don't think I can do the description justice, so please please look it up. It's not a romance per say, but I do think it's an incredibly important stort and the MC is bisexual afaik.

The Love and Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan. 17 year old Rukhsana tries her best to love up to her parents expectations, but when they catch her with a girl, she is sent to Bangladesh to 'straighten her out'. Only through reading her grandmother's old diaries is she able to gain some perspective. Now she realises has to fight for her love, but can she do that without losing everyone she loves?

Little & Lion by Brandy Colbert. Another book on my TBR that I've heard great things about. Suzette comes home to LA from her boarding school, and doesn't want to go back. All her family and friends are in LA, and her stepbrother has just been diagnosed with Bipolar and needs her support. But Suzette finds herself falling for the same girl her brother is in love with. When Lionel's disorder spirals out of control, Suzette has to confront her past mistakes and help Lionel before he does something to hurt himself.

Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. Now, I wasn't sure if I should recommend this but ykw? I will, cause it's an AMAZING series. It's a space opera with sword fighting and necromantic lesbians and a locked house murder mystery... in space. And with lesbians. There's 2 books out of 3 out now and while there's no romance (hopefully YET) it's just an incredibly well thought out and hilarious book. The narration is *chef's kiss*

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I just finished this book this week and Y'all 😤 This book tells the story of Evelyn Hugo, a Cuban-American and an Old Hollywood star known for her beauty and scandal after scandal. Now in her late 70s, she is giving one last interview to an unknown journalist, Monique Grant, who she doesn't seem to be connected to... But as we learn about Evelyn's life, we find out that maybe things weren't as they seemed? And we learn what really ties her to Monique. The fact that I'm recommending it here may be a bit of a spoiler 😂 Evelyn is bisexual, and she ACTUALLY SAYS THE WORD.

Honorary mention to N.K. Jemisin's The Broken Earth trilogy and The City We Became (this is the first book in her new series). Jemisin is just... a master at what she does. Both of these series are sci-fi / urban fantasy, with excellent modern social commentary. Her character work is phenomenal and they're all incredibly diverse (she has bisexual and lesbian main characters in both series, plus characters of different races and orientations that are always thoughtfully and respectfully crafted). READ HER.

General

The WQ sent her child at a very young age to Chicago. Not out motherly love, but as a backup in case she fell during battle. Very few people knew she had a child, so it was rather easy

In her eyes she’s nothing more than a pawn to use for later

MC was found abandoned with apparently no memory of her parents, as all she said was her mother was a queen.

She was raised in a foster family with a lot of foster siblings going in and out of the house. Due to the mass amount of kids, she learned to take care of herself.

Sophie is someone who lives nearby and becomes friendly with her, even with the age difference.

She was returning back from school when she was struck by lightning.

She’s around 10 years old

When she looks around in the Fantasy Realm, she realizes that this is like in her dreams that she’s had for years.

Obviously there is no romance.

August Falke 

August just stares at this tiny girl that looks so much like the WQ it’s not even funny...but she’s a child.

She’s younger than Heloise for Gods’ sake!

She may be far too young to be the WQ, but there can’t be any denials of her sudden appearance in the village, nor can there be any denials of who she looks like. He takes her to the castle, but isn’t as angry or mean about it.

The first night, she just breaks down and starts crying. She tries to be as quiet as possible, because she doesn’t want to piss August off, because he’s already annoyed that she chose him to stick with. August’s shield breaks a little, because all he can see is one of his sisters crying. While he doesn’t relent, he does comfort her a little and that helps her get to sleep.

Alain kidnapping her sends him into big-brother-panic-mode. Like he wants to go after them right away, and barely stops himself. It’s really Reiner who makes him stop so they can make a plan. And when they do rescue her, he barely lets her go when they make their escape.

The second attempt pisses him the hell off. He starts her training on the sword for defense.

While she runs away after the Ice Crystal incident, she doesn’t actually start heading to the WQ castle. She’s actually snatched by some of the WQ soldiers. She has to play the part of the WQ, and states that she was cursed in a child’s body.

How she manages that, she has no idea. She’s sure that August and the others aren’t going to come for her. It plays out pretty similarly to what happens, though she does explain she never intended to go too far.

She’s honestly thrown when she meets August’s mother and sister. Asta becomes protective of her in an instant and treats her like one of her own children. It’s actually pretty overwhelming for MC, because while the foster home was alright...it wasn’t exactly the most caring of places.

She breaks down because of it.

When August takes her to the Falke Inn he almost considers leaving her there, but ultimately decides to take her to the capital.  

She panics when she’s sent back to Chicago because she has no way of knowing how to get back. The first person she thinks to look for is Sophie, and she realizes the foster home didn’t even notice she was gone for a week. Sophie agrees to help her back

When she does, she works on getting August better

When WQ curses her, it stuns August and infuriates him. He knew the WQ was evil. It’s not a surprise. But the fact that she cursed her own daughter, a child to die a slow and painful death just flabbergasts him.

Returning her to Chicago, he initially wants to leave her there, until he sees how her foster family is, and decides he can’t do that to her.

He decides to take her as his squire

Saerys 

He has mixed feelings about this girl.

Her mother destroyed his people, mass genocide. But in all likelihood she was an infant, or a young child at that point. For all he knows, she might not have even been in this world when WQ destroyed the demon race.

MC is really quiet around him for a long time. It’s not until Solaire corners him that he learns she’s quiet around him because she’s scared he hates her for what her mother did to his people.

She wouldn’t blame him if he did.

It takes a little while for him to come around to her, but he does get protective of her. 

Turbo mode initially attacks her, but stops just before actually hurting her.

She still chases after him when he runs away, before she decides to go to WQ's castle to see if she can find some answers. And boy does she.

She’s stunned by the fact that her mother decided she would use her as a holder for her soul. She knew her mother didn’t love her...but still. 

Saerys is not pleased when he learns of this.

It’s bad enough her crazed climb for power killed his race, but to use her own child in this just proves how mad she is.

They’re both protective of each other for different reasons. Saerys begins to train her in self-defense.

MC nearly dying cuts her mother’s connection to her. But there is no soul splitting.

Saerys becomes like a big brother to MC

The demon souls eventually see her as their youngling, which is kind of...weird...to Saerys and MC but as long as they don’t try to kill her Saerys puts up with it

Altea Bellerose 

She’s stunned to see the girl. She’s so young. That means that she had to have been born at least right before all this madness had started or at the beginning.

It’s unsettling to her. She was young when she entered the war against WQ, but this is...this is wrong. 

She does several non-invasive spells to see if this isn’t a trick to get Reiner’s guard down.

Afterwards, MC follows her around, confused but still trusting her. 

She’s really curious about magic. Not like she can do it, but it’s still cool looking to watch. Altea smiles and doesn’t mind letting the girl watch.

She decides if the girl does develop magical abilities like her mother, she’ll teach her how to control them.

She’ll be more accepting than her parents were, that’s a fact.

Speaking of meeting her parents...it’s...a bit awkward. Because hoo boy, the parents automatically think the girl is somehow Altea’s biological daughter and the screaming gets really loud. MC’s confused, Altea’s embarrassed. It’s all in all...very awkward.

At least Lionel likes MC

Reiner Wolfson 

To say he’s stunned when Altea brings the 10 year old girl into his study is an understatement. She looks absolutely terrified, but is trying to not fully panic.

It doesn’t take him long to basically adopt her, much to her surprise. The retainers aren’t as surprised, though some of them object a little due to the worry of this being a trick by WQ.

MC has a bit of difficulty getting used to him. It’s not like her foster father was exactly attentive. He had to work. So it throws her when Reiner actually asks her questions about herself and her interests. 

Eventually she starts to let her guard down, still unsure what is going on, but finding that Reiner is actually pretty fatherly. Better than her foster father and probably better than her actual father. 

Ryland is very much protective of her and is like an older brother to MC. 

She doesn’t remember her own dad, barely remembers her mother (which is probably a good thing), and the foster parents were...well they were there. Having someone actually take an interest in her and listen to her is a new concept.

Reiner is protective of her. It doesn’t matter that she’s the WQ’s daughter, although it is worrying. She’s a child. She’s not her mother. And he intends to make sure she never becomes like her mother.

In Chicago, MC runs into Reiner as she’s getting off a subway and nearly falls because of a hurrying business man. Reiner catches her before she hurts herself.

He’s a little alarmed at how protective he is of a girl he’s never apparently met. He’s a college professor, and he’s sure he would recognize a ten year old in his classes

His alarm shifts when he drops her off at the foster home. They hadn’t even realized she was gone for a few hours (which is actually longer). Leaving her there seems more of a danger and it hurts Reiner for some inexplicable reason

Reiner winds up going to the courts and asking to foster her. This breaks the curse on him.

He doesn’t fully adopt her in Chicago, because that takes too much time and they don’t have that time. He formally adopts her in the Fantasy Realm

Which winds up making her a defacto princess when Reiner is declared King

Which opens up a completely different can of very large worms. She’s the WQ’s daughter. Someone who coveted the throne...what if that had been her plan

MC doesn’t really care about a crown or a throne, and makes it very clear on that. She doesn’t want to be like her mother. 

And the retainers/Reiner make it very clear to not go near that topic or go after MC because things will happen to them if they attack the girl. Bad things. Like really, really bad things.

Defeating her mother hurts, and losing Ishara hurts because that was the closest person she had to a motherly figure. She begins to heal, just like the land

Iseul Idreis 

He...really doesn’t know what to say or do. In his very long life, he’s never come across something like this. 

He doesn’t want the responsibility of the girl, knowing full well what the implications of this. Reluctantly he accepts Reiner’s order.

Slowly she and he bond, and he treats her like an annoying little sister.

Meeting his mother is nerve-wracking to say the least. She doesn’t have the greatest luck with meeting mothers, hers included.

Ishara however is incredibly sympathetic to the girl and is protective of her. Also...a sort of grandchild

Iseul blushes at that and is very embarrassed. MC didn’t hear so she has no idea what was said and Iseul refuses to explain why his sisters are cackling and he looks about ready to jump off a cliff.

Speaking of cliffs…

MC blames herself for his perceived death and withdraws from a lot of people. Ishara is there to comfort her.

Iseul has a whole lot of explaining and bribing MC with sweets to get her to forgive him for that

Ishara and Iseul plan on having her drink from the well when she’s a little older

Helena Klein 

Helena knew of MC prior to this, though not in big detail. Whenever she asked WQ, she was greeted with pain and punishment.

She stops asking after a certain point

When MC arrives, of course Helena initially thinks she’s the WQ just aged down. MC tells her over and over again she isn’t. 

Eventually Helena believes her and realizes she’s the child that the WQ had refused to talk about.

She also realizes the girl is in far more danger now

That is her primary reason for escaping with the girl. If the WQ comes back...the girl will probably not survive

MC is incredibly protective of Helena, especially when she finds out what her mother did to her.

She feels guilty for looking like her mother, because Helena doesn’t deserve seeing a mirror of her mother. Helena is quick to assure her that she doesn’t fear her.

It’s strange for Helena to be in the Human realm. She doesn’t complain, especially when she sees MC seeming to come out of her shell.

Losing Alain breaks something in Helena and MC switches roles from being a child to being the adult and comforting Helena

It’s strange, but she does it

When Helena is in Chicago, and forgets everything MC asks Sophie to watch over her because she’s too old to be in the foster home and she doesn’t have anywhere to go.

When she finally remembers, she is pissed at where MC is. Basically drags MC away.

When they return to Chicago after everything, Helena plans on adopting MC so she can be raised right. It doesn’t matter what she has to do to make it work. She will.

Alain Richter 

He remembers finding out WQ was pregnant. He doesn’t know who the father was, though he had an inkling it was someone from the high King’s council.

He doesn’t like to think that there is a chance the child could have been his. 

WQ told him that she had been killed, which added to his loyalty to her and hatred to the others because they killed an innocent child

When he sees MC, he just knows who she is. And realizes what the WQ had done.

He’s far more protective of her. MC starts seeing him as a fatherly figure.

It throws him that’s for sure. The woman he loved, and swore loyalty to is gone, but the child, her child is there.

He swears loyalty to her and protects her the best he can.

Something in him snaps when WQ orders him to kill off MC. The lie she told him about MC years before comes back and he realizes that she will do to ensure she will win

When he reaches the Human Realm, he doesn’t fight. He doesn’t even really care if he’s executed for his crimes. His only request is that she's protected. She wasn’t involved with the crimes that he did for the WQ.

Blissful Silence (Liam x MC)

[Note: I had the day off from work today, so what did I do with my free time? Wrote another TRH fic! It’s a little (a lot) all over the place and it ended up being longer than I originally anticipated (apparently my mind had a lot to say), but overall I’m happy with its outcome... I think. That could change within a few hours.]

[Summary: After the announcement of the heirs gender and with Freya’s due date only days away, everyone is anxious for their arrival. You can read my previous similar fic here if you’d like!]

“What about Oliver? It’s cultivated, like Liam, yet also simple, like you.”

I was gritting my teeth so tightly I was sure they would fall out as I stomped to the great hall, Madeleine hot on my heels with pen and paper gripped determinedly between her stupidly perfect manicured nails. I didn’t think it was possible for me to dislike her more than I already did, yet these past eight months had proved me wrong. She’d evolved from an irritating itch to a festering disease, one with seemingly no cure that was driving me more toward insanity with each passing day.

It was late morning and the palace was fairly quiet with most of the staff out doing their duties for the day, so it gave me the illusion that I was alone, which was far from the truth. I was never alone, not anymore. I knew Mara wasn’t far behind, my ever watchful shadow, though she was careful to camouflage her presence like she had been for the past several weeks, which caused the sour bitter-taste of guilt to stick to the back of my throat. I hadn’t meant to snap at her. I was just tired of everyone treating me like I was a piece of fractured glass, ready to shatter into millions of irreparable shards at a moment's notice. I was pregnant, not dying.

“Lionel would also be an acceptable choice.” I grimaced. “Or Alfred, after Alfred Dumar, the fabled Cordonian dueler. The public would love that, not to mention it would portray stability to name the heir after someone so admired within society.”

“For the last time, Madeleine, I’m not discussing baby names with you.” Liam and I had recently announced the gender of our child, a boy, under the guidance of our press secretary. We had originally planned to keep it a surprise but Cordonia’s citizens were growing restless as were the neighboring royals. They wanted answers and I was failing to provide them. Curse me for taking too long to grow a human being inside my belly.

A press interview was scheduled to take place in the great hall this afternoon to discuss the kingdoms future king, so I was shoved into a satin pearl gown that hugged my torso a little too snugly with dozens on beaded clips secured in my hair to try to tame the strands flat. It wasn’t working. I blew a rogue flyaway away from my scrunched forehead. Definitely not working.

“It would be good to disclose this sort of information during the interview, Freya. With your due date being mere weeks away the media is going to be as demanding as ever,” she told me matter-of-factly as she scrawled something inside her notebook as we walked from corridor to corridor.

“Then they can wait those last few weeks to get that information,” I shot back.

The one thing they fail to tell a pregnant queen was how different her circumstances would be from a regular pregnant woman. I knew that things would be more complex for me than a typical mother, I’d always known, but it was one thing knowing and another thing actually experiencing it firsthand.

Every one of them wanted a piece of my son for themselves. They circled around me like vultures, blackening the sky as they anticipated the big moment so they could dive in for the kill. Dive in for that tiny chip of power that they would be offered. I’d do anything, anything, to keep him from their clutches. He was mine… at least for now.

I’d stopped listening to Madeleine minutes ago. Her even tone melded into the background with the rest of the pointless factors as my mind raced with obsessive thoughts until a deep throb started to pound like a heartbeat against my skull. My soles hurt, my back cramped, hips too tiny to accommodate my now massive stomach, and this dress was trying to suffocate me with it’s never-ending ruffles.

I slipped a clip free from atop my head.

I was warm. Too warm. Like I was sitting too close to the sun. Why did this castle have to be so goddamn warm?

Another clip was ripped away impatiently and dropped, forgotten on the marble below.

I glanced down at my dress. I hated the color ivory. It was reserved for people who were considered pure and innocent and I was neither. I felt like I was posing as something I wasn’t wearing it. It wasn’t meant to be worn by people like me.

I reached up again, my fingers trembling slightly now. Down went another clasp, echoing soundlessly against the ground as Madeleine’s voice droned on and on.

We came to the end of the corridor then only to be met by a set of polished, gleaming stairs. My legs ached. Stairs. So many stairs.

Madeleine moved forward down the steps while I was rooted to the spot like my feet were super-glued to the floor. I stumbled back, hands reaching behind me for the glass of the long decorative table that posed with two velvet cushioned chairs in the hallway in front of one of the windows overlooking the castle gardens. My fingertips met a cool surface and I shifted to the right to ease myself down into one of the chairs.

I sunk into it with a soft sigh and let my eyes fall closed as I tipped my head back against the headrest. Immediately some of the tension eased, evaporated into nothing, giving my lungs more room to breathe. I placed a hand against my uncomfortably swollen belly and began moving it soothingly in small circles back and forth, back and forth. I wish I could stay here like this, without a care in the world. I wish—

“What do you think you’re doing?” Madeleine’s voice came directly above me though I didn’t open my eyes to look at her.

“Sitting.”

Even without meeting her gaze I could hear the irritation laced within her words. “You don’t have time to sit. You need to meet with Liam and the media downstairs in ten minutes.”

“I don’t want to.”

“I don’t care if you want to, you have to.”

“I’m the Queen of Cordonia,” I said. “I don’t have to do anything.”

She huffed as she towered over me with what I could only guess was a disapproving expression. “You know that’s not how this works.”

I hummed. “Are you sure about that?”

“Unlike the rest of your companions, I don’t find this amusing—.” I’d stopped listening after that. It was always the same with Madeleine. She’d tell me to do something, I’d refuse mostly just because I could, and then she would lecture me about my “incivility” and remind me of the importance of my “regal demeanor.” I was a queen and, in her mindset, that meant I was expected to smile and wave and look pretty while keeping my mouth firmly shut.

I slumped further down into the armchair, the light playing against the inside of my eyelids as I let my thoughts wander away from me. The window behind me was propped open slightly, letting the strong scent of freshly mowed grass drift up into the room. I took a deep breath and allowed that seemingly unimportant observation wash over me. It’s funny how something familiar like that can calm you down. It was one of the things I’d learned to cherish more and more over the past year, the little details. The ones that appeared insignificant but in truth were what held everything together at the seams. I sighed. When did things become so complicated?

“Freya?” A new voice cut through my thoughts. Worried, richly masculine, and perfect. Liam. “What happened?”

Madeleine answered before I could, her sharp tone clashing so harshly against his that it almost made me laugh. “Your wife is being effortlessly impossible, per usual.”

Footsteps grew closer. I could feel him kneel down in front of me, his large fingers gripping the armrests at my sides as he searched my face. “Frey?” I opened my eyes to meet his. Concern pinched his eyebrows together. He had the appearance of the refined king, blond hair neatly combed back and white dress shirt stretched across his broad chest invitingly, but the expression of my doting husband and instantly my heart rate settled. “Are you alright?”

“I’m sitting,” I told him.

Liam gave me an amused look. “I can see that.”

Sucking in a deep breath, I placed my hand over his on the chair and he brought my fingers to his mouth, his lips brushing softly against my knuckles. I let my fingertips play across his newly shaved cheek as I matched his gentle look with one of my own. “They’re waiting for us,” he murmured.

I shook my head. “I don’t want to go.”

“Neither do I,” Liam said. “But I don’t think we get much say in the matter.”

“Unfortunately,” I grumbled.

“How about this,” he pressed, Madeleine silently scolding me from behind his shoulder. “We go and finish this one interview, maybe pose for a few photos.” I wrinkled my nose at him. “And afterwards we spend the rest of the evening together, just you and me. No interruptions.”

I leaned forward with bright eyes. “Really?”

“Really.” He smoothed away the wild hairs against my brow to kiss my forehead. “What do you say, My Love?”

A small smirk curved my lips. “I say… you’ve got yourself a deal.”

The gentle pressure of Liam’s fingers intertwined with my own was comforting as he led us hand in hand through the palace maze later that day. The press gathering had taken up most of our afternoon so the sun was just beginning to disappear beyond the trimmed hedges, leaving everything in a blinding golden glow. An easy silence enveloped us while we walked; I think we were both grateful for the quiet. It was something we really didn’t get to experience much of anymore.

We wandered for a few more minutes before the path narrowed, opening up to a small clearing ahead and I let out a startled laugh as the sight of a distressed swing hung low on a crooked branch came into view. It had been over a year since I had last been here yet everything looked exactly the same. The overgrown vines, the metal canopy overhead, the grass peeking through the stones of the trail. Warmth spread low in my belly as all the shared memories rushed back.

“You really are a helpless romantic,” I teased as Liam helped me onto the swing. The wood was pale, peeling from old age and use and the ropes burned against my palms as I gripped them tightly.

“I try,” he said with a small smile.

I gave myself an experimental push. “This is where you proposed to me for the first time.”

“It was supposed to be the only time.”

“If your family had gotten their way I wouldn’t even be sitting here today,” I said, causing a distant look to cloud his eyes, and immediately regretted it. It wasn’t Liam’s fault that his parents had disapproved of our relationship. He wasn’t responsible for the actions of other men, even those carried out by his own father.

I nudged him with the tip of my flat to try to lighten the mood. “You seemed nervous that night. I must be extremely intimidating.”

He laughed. “I was terrified.”

“King Liam? Terrified? I find that hard to believe.” I gave myself another push.

“It’s true,” Liam told me. “I knew I was going to propose to you almost immediately after meeting you, Freya. For me it was something set in stone, something as normal as breathing. But for you?” He shook his head slightly and broke eye contact to rub the back of his neck. “I grew up in this environment. Being engaged to a woman I had known for less than a year wasn’t an unusual thought for me, but that wasn’t the case for you.” He stepped closer, fingers gripping the rope of the swing as he hovered above me. “I was sure you were going to say no.”

I stood then and tilted my chin up to meet his gaze. Blue eyes clashed against brown. He was so close that I could feel his warm breath against my cheeks, taste the heat radiating off of his chest in waves.

“And yet here I am,” I whispered while taking one of his hands and laying it over the bump of my stomach.

His irises flared, expression shifting from composed into something soft and vulnerable with every emotion open and out on display. Joy, fear, adoration, nervousness, love. So much love.

“Freya, I—,” he started before I molded my lips against his, cutting him off. I kissed him like I had that night so many months ago, in the same exact spot. Intensely and greedily like I couldn’t get enough of him. Pouring all my thoughts and feelings into a single gesture, taking everything that he was willing to give and giving back just as much. His fingers tangled in my short hair as he pressed his mouth so hard against mine that I was sure it would bruise. My head began to spin. He peppered tiny kisses over my eyelids and brow as I pulled back and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“I love you too,” I told him.

Can I prompt a headcanon for a single parent L&L MC?

Anon, I love you. I really like Single Parent stories which is weird because as an adult I don’t really want kids unless they’re like… eight but I love Single Parent stories where the kid is five or some shit. I change the kid for each LI and how MC ended up with the kid to because how MC is related to the WQ changes throughout the stories so… why the hell not?

Reiner

So the MC has a bio kid who is five and a little girl here with super curly blonde hair who loves tea parties

No one really thinks MC is the WQ because they would have known if she had a kid but like… there are rumors about her and Alain sooooo…

Small plot where the generals actually do think the kid is Alain and the WQ and freak out. HOW DID SHE HIDE THIS!?!?

Reiner is super nice and makes sure the kid is happy while also being nice to MC because it has to be hard, you know?

Reiner is the Dad friend but has never actually done dad stuff. Sure, people have called him dad by accident but… yeah. 

Super good at being a dad though. Like when he and MC get together it’s like a month later the kid is calling him dad.

Ryland is thrilled.

The kid ropes Reiner and all the retainers into a huge tea party that is mostly a little kid having fun.

Reiner is super protective of MC and the kid. Like when the war starts he’s super focused on protection of the castle because that is HIS KID.

MC actually is more willing to marry him sooner because… well, her kid loves him and when else is she going to find someone as awesome at being a dad?

Reiner signs adoption papers in Chicago to make the kid his legally. She is his heir, no matter what.

August

The kid here is a four-year-old girl who MC adopted when her mother (MC’s friend) died. It was a bad car accident and the little girl lost her leg to it.

August is only like… 80% sure that MC is the Witch Queen here because the other 20% is like: she has a kid she loves. Can’t be the WQ.

August is good with kids but like not… used to being more than just a brother or a mentor? He’s good with the kid but is also super awkward about dating her mother.

Also, there’s the whole the kid isn’t used to MC being the mom either, so it’s both of them trying to figure out how to parent the kid without putting stress on the kid.

Kid starts calling them mom and dad in the third season.

The kid turns out to love horses through and boom. August has an in. They two obsess over horses and August totally gets the kid her own pony.

“She’s four.” “Never too early, besides we’ll start with the basics.” “FOUR.”

August goes to veterans who lost a leg or something to learn how to help train the kid when she expresses an interest in swords.

His mother is a grandma right off the bat. Loves this kid and his sisters love being aunts. His dad… eh, still has a hard time with it but then just falls for the cute kid. He’s a grandpa now.

August is super protective of the kid but also is the one to encourage the kid and be the best parent he can be.

The little girl gets the fanciest dress for the wedding. August asks her permission before marrying MC and it’s super sweet and cute.

Saerys

The kid here is a five-year-old boy with a stutter. He’s a bio kid but it was like a super long custody battle and the kid is a little nervous around strangers.

Saerys is: Nope, not the WQ. She loves this kid to much.

Romance takes a bit longer because MC does not go to Saerys room at all the first time because of her kid. Saerys as well is actually SUPER awkward with the kid.

Like really awkward because he’s never handled a kid before and like the demon realm is gone so he never thought he would either.

The kid does bond with him over food though. This kid loves food.

Kid also likes learning languages.

MC and Saerys have a slow burn because MC is kind of recovering from the shitty relationship and Saerys is struggling with: She’s a parent, that’s a kid, what?

Saerys is vicious about protecting the MC and the kid. Like this is his family. HIS. HIS.

Kid kind of takes to calling him papa fairly easily.

Saerys is more interested in staying in Chicago because like it’s safer for the kid and the kid can get a lot of help with his minor anxiety and stuff. But the kid hates it cause he’s scared his dad will be able to take him back and his dad was not a good guy.

Altea

The kid here is a little boy with red hair. He’s six and adopted after MC was in a serious relationship with a woman who had cancer. She died and MC adopted the kid.

Altea is… eh middling about the WQ thing. it would make sense for the WQ to have a kid as a cover but there appears to be real love…

The kid doesn’t like Altea at first. He still remembers his mum and this lady can’t replace her!!!

But magic is super cool and the portal thing turns out to have given him magic and Altea is all over teaching him. 

Also the kid’s mum was French so he and Altea speak French and MC is like: Okay, this sucks.

MC and Altea are sickeningly cute with their kid. Many jokes.

MC is really happy that Altea is such a good parent because she loves her kid and like… it’s hard being a mom after losing the woman she loved. And Altea is here and helping.

The whole princess thing really is tough to deal with because like what does this mean for her and the kid?!

Going to Altea’s kingdom is terrifying. The Queen and King are even more upset their daughter wants to marry a woman with a kid.

Lionel is super into being an uncle though.

When they accept MC and the kid, they are really into being grandparents and kind of shower the kid with stuff.

They plan to leave the kid behind where he is safe but well, his uncle has a fun idea…

Iseul

The kid here is a bio kid who is two. A cute baby girl. The relationship was a one-night stand and the dad wants nothing to do with her.

Iseul is not sure if MC is the WQ but is more focused on NOT wanting to deal with a kid. Like no, no. He doesn’t want that responsibility!!

MC picks him for that reason- to annoy him.

Iseul and MC have a very long slow burn because Iseul is terrified of being responsible for a kid.

Baby girl loves Iseul though and likes playing with his hair and animals. Isuel gets a huge soft spot for her.

Grandma Ishara. That is all

MC and Iseul don’t have as much issue with Ishara because their relationship developed slower so they’re more secure.

Iseul is a great dad and breaks down crying when the baby girl calls him papa. it’s so cute.

Will totally have tea parties or whatever she wants.

the kid is a cutie who loves cuddles and likes to be carried. Iseul ends up with a baby sling. 

Iseul and Ishara totally will have the kid drink from the well to.

This kid is going to be spoiled af by her aunt, zizi, grandma and grandpa.

Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five wrote the theme song for the 1984 hip-hop film. It was one of the first movies, which starred Guy Davis and Jon Chardiet, about break-dancing and hip-hop culture. It focused on an aspiring DJ from the Bronx and his best friend, a promoter. The pair tried to get into the industry by educating people on hip-hop and the culture of the genre. He even helped bring three of hip-hop's earliest female rappers together for a vital part in the movie, MC She Rock, Debbie D., and Lisa Lee. The Legend's Hits Sampled On Hip-Hop Records Hip-hop artists have also sampled the legend's music. Pitbull, T-Pain, and Sean Paul's "Shake Senora," Doja Cat's "Won't Bite" featuring Smino, and Lil Wayne's "6 Foot, 7 Foot" featuring Cory Gunz. Due to contractual obligations, I’m currently getting through the new Eminem album. At one point, he says that no one can criticize him unless they’ve gone diamond. I could argue endlessly that artistic skill does not necessarily correlate to commercial performance, but it’s more fun to list the rappers who can, by this metric, criticize Eminem.
