Pokemon Horizons Episode 61 Review - Flow And Ryme

We’re finally at Montenevera Town so Roy can do his Implementation Test, but doesn’t this episode feel a little clunky? I feel like they were trying to squeeze in so many things before Roy did his battle but the battle went by super fast, like a snowstorm, and it just ends. Please tell me I’m not the only one who had this feeling?

The kids have some free time before battling Ryme as she’s not in her Gym, so they meet a bunch of Greavard. I like that creepy Pokedex entries continue to make their appearance in the anime as the kids learn that Greavards suck life essence from those around them. Speaking of creepy Pokemon, Terapagos gets itself into danger again when two Drifloon kidnap it by carrying its bag straps. I could only sigh at this scene because Terapagos wandering off and getting into danger has become tiresome to watch. Though, it was amusing how the Drifloon were carrying it because it is known for taking children or Pokemon to the afterlife. Does this hint that Terapagos is going to die?

Nemona makes a reappearance when she shows up to rescue Terapagos from falling. She’s here to hope to get a battle at Ryme’s concert. Like how Terapagos gets into danger as a recurring thing, Nemona getting denied a battle seems to be a recurring thing as well. I wonder if Nemona is being set up to be Roy’s rival or to battle Roy in the future.

Then we get to the battles. Roy battles MC Sledge before battling Ryme. While Roy does get a win from MC Sledge, he loses to Ryme rather harshly. He loses his momentum when things get too desperate, he terastalizes but doesn’t even get to use it as Fuecoco gets knocked out. I have a lot to say about the battle against Ryme. It’s way too fast-paced. The moment it starts, Kilowattrel gets knocked out and then Fuecoco knocks out Houndstone and then Fuecoco struggles with Toxitricity before getting knocked out. Though, there were some interesting aspects about the battle. Roy’s loss was because of predictability. He used the same strategy as he did in the battle with MC Sledge, which Ryme saw. This is why she was able to wipe the floor with him. He needs to amp up his strategy if he wants to improve and not rely on the same song over and over again. What Ryme said to Roy about being a failure of a partner to Fuecoco was harsh, but it was needed because Roy wasn’t in sync with him.

I guess my only solid gripe is that the battle wasn’t a Double Battle. Ryme was the hardest Gym Leader for me when I was playing Pokemon Violet because I didn’t expect a Double battle, hence why I struggled so hard due to going in blind completely lacking a strategy.

Complaints aside, I really liked Ryme’s rap. People usually find anime characters’ rapping cringe, but not me. I seriously enjoyed the tempo and presentation of Ryme’s rap. I think it flowed well. Maybe she can be a contestant on Paradox Live (which I am a fan of)? Roy’s rapping was handled well too! He can participate in Paradox Live as well! 

My predictions for Roy’s rematch is that he’s going to find ways to battle using different songs for different moves. Maybe that way, Fuecoco can finally evolve, which I am expecting next episode because it does feel like it’d be the perfect time for him to evolve. If anything, I sort of want Roy to focus on training Kilowattrel because Electric moves can be very useful when facing Houndstone. What are your predictions for next week’s episode?

i think the reason i enjoyed wake the dead so much is because it’s literally just a blades zombie apocalypse au?! i feel like people have brought this up before but i’m replaying rn and it just.. Slays

like the mc loses their sibling who they care about more than anything. they leave the place they’ve always called their home and befriend a group of ragtag allies along the way. though the wtd mc’s goal isn’t necessarily to save the world, it IS to save the people in the colony & the people they care about in time for the solstice. all of it builds up to the final battle against The Big Bad, with smaller battles and travels throughout.

the love interests all have their blades counterparts (other than sledge):

troy = mal (witty, comedic & nonchalant but caring beneath the cocky demeanour. also both criminals lol)

shannon = nia (more sheltered, not super physically strong but still surprises herself, one of her skills involves healing, optimistic)

eli = tyril (stoic, family-oriented, tries not to get attached and is reluctant to join the group at first, lethal in combat & has his signature weapon)

angel = imtura (more of a wildcard, impulsive, ruthless when it comes to whatever you’re fighting, the token Badass)

even the order you befriend them all in is the same: we befriend shannon first (just like we first work with nia), then troy (mal), eli (tyril), and finally angel (imtura).

obviously certain personality traits are unique and different tropes and backstories are included but ?!!?! it’s so them!

the mc collects armour and weapons along the way, reading letters and recipe books like the blades mc read lore tablets. you have specific skills(???) that you can choose to upgrade or get along the way (fortifications, research, etc) and you get benefits and specific scenes based on your skills/resources.

dirk is also kind of like an aerin parallel — always overlooked, feels under appreciated in the colony, left behind and resentful about someone else being the leader & getting all the credit.

ALSO the marcus blackstock/high priest parallels with them being supposedly good but sacrificing the innocent…

even the slowmo-action-shot character art is like the art in blades (when mal throws the dagger, tyril has his flaming sword, imtura on the ship, etc).

TOBIAS. FREAKING. CARRICK. (OH) Dude- PB - WTF were you thinking? Or not thinking might be more appropriate here. Not only did this ho want to romance him, but the juicy story that would have delivered in Book 3... it was RIGHT THERE ... low hanging fruit... and PB blew it.

Olivia Nevrakis (TRR) - I mean, who doesn't love a sexy, hot redhead who dresses to the nines with at least six switchblades hiding in her couture? Liam, who? Drake, who? Maxwell, Who? And Hana is sweet and all, but I am not that into sweet. Liv, they did us dirty!

Robin Flores (TNA) - OK, I only liked TNA1 (2 caused me pain, so I stopped reading & never opened 3), but I enjoyed 1. It's fun, babes; you want a McDonald's burger every now and then, right? But I digress. The story would have been SO much more fun if Robin had been an LI, and not for nothing. I think he had much more in common with my MC than Sam ever did. I said what I said.

Aurora Emery (OH) - I really thought they were going there... then they didn't. She had the same curmudgeonly attitude that Ethan did at the start, and MC wore her down, the same way she did Ethan (at least in my playthrough). I think they could have worked well, and how could you say no to Aurora in that red dress?

Jackie Varma (OH) - Oh, wait? What? She was an LI you say? Wow, well, based on the four mediocre scenes per book we got... I almost forgot. Jackie should have been given equal billing... because it almost feels like she was not an LI.

Baz Mirani (OH) - I freaking love Baz. Like... love Baz. He is the perfect best friend, and buddy, a little frumpy with a tummy character that is so adorable, caring, and fun that one day he and MC could be playing video games together, look at each other, and just go - "Oh, fuck, yeah... we could do this!"

Harper Emery (OH) - Again. The storyline could have been great. MC falling for Ethan's ex... come on! And I'm sorry, but Harper is a gorgeous, sexy, brilliant, badass woman - what's not to fall for? (Let's not talk about Book 3, Harper, Book 3 is NOT canon.)

Cassidy (WTC) - OK she didn't last too long, but if she would have lasted longer, she would have been a fun LI. I loved her edge, and she would have been a 10 times better option than Sledge. (Look at me, I rhymed! lol)

Horatio Santos (LH) - We could use another quality Latine LI in the Choices galaxy, and I don't know. He reminds me of the guys from Brooklyn that I used to date back in the day. He would have been a good choice.

Xanthe (ACOR) - Because OMG, was she hot as hell.

More team star agere headcannons because I love them- (Giacomo also took it over)

: regressor! Giacomo that basically acts the same as when he's big, just more clingy. Has to be with one of his friends at all times, is following you everywhere and anywhere

: Giacomo showing penny the dancing fruit baby videos,, (eri hates it because to her if you're having a little one watch something at least have it be educational, Gia just thinks it's funny watching Penny be mesmerized by a floating oddish for 30 minutes)

: also regressed! Giacomo getting so excited anytime he sees ryme come up on TV. Him meeting her and ryme going "well, I guess that's my kid now" she's the most protective momma you'll ever meet, mess with her kid and she'll beat you into the ground both with a rap battle and her pokemon (MC sledge babysits sometimes, always tries to be the funnest babysitter around, you gotta laugh loud enough to wake the dead for him to consider his job a success)

: Giacomo wanting to be the most helpful he can be no matter what. Insisting on helping, refilling Penny's bottle and his own sippy cup all by himself. Always a big brother, even when he's regressed himself

Finally getting around to Wake the Dead and I wish I'd gotten around to it sooner. Genuinely enjoying it, 13 chapters in. While I love smut, it's really nice to have stories where smut takes a back seat to fighting horrifying threats.

The LIs are all interesting people, the setting is unique, and the different alliance groups are interesting and/or amusing.

The art, as per usual, is pretty great, and I love that for a change, the female LIs outnumber the male LIs. (Also, PB, come on, use the long hair for the male MCs again, it's pretty!) I also appreciate that they're a variety of archetypes. Eli's the stoic bad ass, Troy's the rogueish jokester, Shannon is intelligent and capable but her skills lie in the lab more than out in the field, Angel is... Okay so Angel's basically Jinx, and Sledge is a bad ass warrior woman who can crush your throat with one hand, which isn't for me ("I didn't make him her for you!"), but I can see why they included her, and her art is bad ass.

My only big complaint is that the timeline seems pretty inconsistent and unreliable. Sometimes it feels like MC was originally written to be a lot younger, or for the Z-Day to have happened earlier in their life.

The big zombie event started 21 years ago, but MC is consistently treated like an actual child despite being at least 25, since they were 4 when the outbreak happened. I seem to remember something indicating that all hell broke loose in 2021 in one chapter, then 2025 in another. Ultimately 4 years isn't a huge difference but it does help me contextualize things a bit. (I could be wrong on this, I wasn't taking notes and I'm pretty sure I'd taken my sleeping meds before reading those chapters so I may have just misunderstood a bit.)

King Trent was old enough to start the Renfaire back in 2018 (I think.) which would make him... 40s/50s, but neither he nor Ali look over 35 maybe.

And the survivors are still finding food and medical supplies that are still good and/or effective 21 years later. Even food with preservatives will go bad or dry out eventually. Gasoline and other resources seems to be plentiful, as are bullets, livestock and other things.

I think my biggest issue is that it's 21 years after civilization completely collapsed but the story is wobbly on when that actually happened from scene to scene.

None of it's enough to make me stop spending my hard earned diamonds to make my paper dolls kiss, but I'm still a little confused on the exact timeline.

Seriously though. At least a lot of the female LI bodytypes I've seen have had some variation to them? We've got LIs like Ava from ILITW who had a less exaggerated hourglass shape. We've got buff gals like Imtura, Kepler, Zaniah, Sledge, Naomi, Imani, all of whom had varying degrees of buffness. Plus also that new bodytype for the female version of the DLS LI. Heck, even that one overused lean-muscle female bodytype with the hand on the cocked hip was at least some variation.

Don't get me wrong– PB is still terrible at female body diversity, but there's more noticeable variation with them. I can at least classify them differently. Meanwhile, EVERY male LI or male version of an LI can be classified as muscular. Even the ones that have some variation like Thomas Hunt and Caleb having flatter stomachs or Ajay having an hourglass shape. The only exception is Tom Sato, and even he can be considered lean-muscular. Like does PB think they're gonna lose precious pennies from straight women if they have a dude without any muscles or something?

Give me some twink LIs. Give me some femboy LIs. Give me mom bod LIs and dad bod LIs. Give me larger/fat/plus-size LIs. They're capable of making different body shapes for the non-LI non-MC characters, they should be perfectly capable of doing it for LIs (and MCs).

Lol I do agree there's little to no variation in m!body types. Not all m!romancers are attracted to the severely dehydrated bodybuilder figure. I've thought it was weird that even all the nerds are jacked. I hope pb deviates from the norm and give yall some variety soon
