Watch It, Viu, Shahid.net, Wavo Or Netflix in Egypt

Recently a new platform was released in Egypt to legalize the streaming process of many dramas that were mostly watched illegally by Egyptians. The new platform Watch It is the 5th platform for streaming in Egypt after Netflix, shahid, Wavo and Viu started their services in the country a couple of years ago. This article will discuss the pros and cons of all platforms, in case you wish to sign up to one of these platforms

1. Netflix

As a global streaming platform, Netflix needs no introduction, the basic plan for this significant streaming website is only about 130 LE, and it allows streaming on only one PC. You get access to all the content, and of course, no adds since it is Netflix.

There are pros and cons to Netflix despite being such an accessible website. The main advantage is that most likely the amount of content from all over the world on Netflix is unrivalled, you won’t find the same amount of Asian, European, English, Turkish, Arabic, etc. dramas and movies anywhere else. 

The cons lie in the fact that none of the content is free, no matter how old it is. There is also the fact that you have to pay for any other PC used on your account which some people might find unfair. Netflix content is subbed, so that’s another advantage. Professional subs are found everywhere on Netflix, and if used correctly, it can market the content of a particular country to the whole world quickly. Just like what happened with the Korean dramas that are right now amongst the most popular dramas worldwide. You can now easily watch them subbed in almost any language. 

Netflix bought a lot of the Egyptian dramas that was aired last year. However, this year, unfortunately, the company couldn’t buy much of Ramadan content as they were mostly licensed exclusively for Watch It. Arabic content is, therefore, lacking on Netflix, especially Egyptian ones, so if you are interested in Egyptian content, Netflix might not be the best place to check.

2. VIU

Viu is another streaming service that is available in Egypt and unfortunately is not as popular as it should be, in my opinion. Viu provides an extensive list of Egyptian, Turkish, Hindi, Korean, and Arabian content with English and Arabic subs. Most of the Korean content is still just English subbed though so it might be hard to target the Arabic audience with only English subs. Viu has over 50% of what you’d wish to watch online for free. Most of the Egyptian Movies available are free as long as you are ready to watch a couple of short adds here and there. Some Korean Content is also free as well as Arabian drama series, Turkish series, etc. 

Certain content on the website are only available for premium membership though, and that’s where you get to pay the money on this one. Bollywood movies mostly require a premium membership and some of the Korean content as well. Very few Egyptian content require a premium membership though. Premium membership on this website is very cheap, only 50 LE, and you get access to everything with no adds. 

3. Shahid.net

Another popular platform in Egypt is Shahid.net, the one platform responsible for all the dramas, movies, and programs that MBC produces and buys. Shahid.net is especially popular thanks to its variety of content as it offers Talkshows, political programs, variety shows and various other content that you can’t find on Viu or Netflix for example. The platform has a lot of the recent Arabian famous dramas like Beirut Bride, starring popular star Dafer Al’abdeen. It also airs a lot of dubbed Turkish series that most mothers love.

In terms of Arabic content, this platform is the richest and the one that covers the most content from all the countries of the middle east. It doesn’t have as many international Content as Netflix, but it does have enough Asian, Turkish, British and American content for occasional watchers. Shahid.net has plus bundles for special content, and they start from 81 LE. The main problem in this platform, though is that their player is sometimes slower than it should be especially with the internet in Egypt being as it is. 

4. WAVO

The online platform for the popular cable channel bundle OSN. Wavo is a platform that offers a lot of European and American content to people. It is not highly focused on Egyptian and Arabian content; however, it does have original content like Ramy, an American Egyptian series that tells the story of an Egyptian guy who grew up in the USA and the cultural differences between US and Egypt. Wavo can also be seen as an HBO alternative platform as it airs the famous HBO series Game of Thrones, which you can never find on Netflix. This platform costs approximately 50 LE as well, similar to Viu in terms of money; however, it does not offer any free content. 

5. Watch It  

Watch It is the recent platform that was released less than a year ago and thus it is the one with the least content. Watch It targets mostly Egyptian Viewers as it only includes dramas and programs from Egypt. Recently the platform added a couple of plays and a couple of popular programs to its inventory and purchased the copyrights to some of the most famous TV shows, like Rafat Elhagan. The platform costs approximately 100 LE per month for each subscription, and it does not offer any free content of any sort. You get an extra seven days for free with your subscription; however, you have to pay first to get the free period. The App also offers six months bundles and year-long bundles that cost approximately 600 LE and 999 LE. 

Overall in terms of money and content, you can choose any of the previous platforms depending on what you wish to watch. However, so far the weakest link in the previous list is Watch It because it lacks any diversity when it comes to content. Thus it can be considered very expensive compared to other platforms that offer both Egyptian and international content for close to 50 LE only. If you would like the latest Egyptian dramas though, Watch It is the only application the latest ones so that’s its big advantage.

Also there's a movie with the same actor from Subh Mangal Jyada Savdhaan - Ayushman Khurana and it's called Andhadhun.......its so good, it's a psychological crime thriller, murder mystery and what not....its just moviegasm straight.

Also any Imtiaz Ali movies coz I am a sucker for it.....but the most recent one that broke me was Laila Majnu....I know lots of adaptations out there....but this is such a modern take but so sick.....And since you like Deepika, you can watch Cocktail by Imtiaz as well....really established her as an actress, also the music album of this movie...🤧

Also I would love if you watched My Name is Khan....that movie touches upon so so so much...its painful...

There's also this movie Masaan, that's so fucking brilliant in how much it speaks and speaks for by using so less of words....it kills me everytime....its also a very raw depiction of Benares (now known as Varanasi, a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India). It's considered to be one of the richest city in terms of spirituality, divinity and also religion but there's also this side of it that talks about gore and death....the city feels to be one of the most hauntingly beautiful amalgamation of divine, life and death....and this movie puts that side out so hauntingly.

All of these movies have soundtracks that are so beautifully poetic....
