Hello! I found your Jigokuraku review through the tags and I read it almost every weeks. I thought you already read the manga because you're not judgemental, like other anime-onlys I found on internet who love to criticize Jigokuraku for simply little things (that was very nice of you! ). Please please I suggest you to read the manga. The things are getting more serious and waiting for season two seems like forever. Like don't you want to know how Gabimaru finally get his memory back? How the whole team finally manage to use Tao (spoiler : thanks to Shion, they don't need to do that filthy bochu jutsu method lol)? What are the role of the new Asaemons? Then, is Gabimaru's wife apparently only an illusion or otherwise she's really exist? Finally, how the Tensens defeated and who are the survivors of this mission? And many other. I could say Jigokuraku is one of the manga with very good ending. There are more blood spilled through the process but it worth to read! (I'm gonna miss your review tho). Thanks!
Aw! Well thank you! I find it hard for me to be critical of a series when I really enjoy the characters and story, especially whenever I start something new since I have no prior knowledge of it whatsoever. (it’s a combination of all that and how nothing can ever disappoint me more than TPN s2 did.)
I guess the common complaint I’ve heard about the most from others is how the animation for Hell’s Paradise was a bit lacking? Coming from MAPPA, I believe people were already set to compare it to AOT, Vinland Sage, JJK & Chainsaw Man, so when this series didn’t “wow” them enough with the typical dynamic action and stunning visuals they normally see from this studio, they started to feel indifferent towards Hell’s Paradise. I understand their disappointment but also realize that Vinland S2 was airing at the same time and AOT & JJK also have upcoming seasons this year, so the studio is kinda stretched thin. I can’t really blame them for putting more effort into those big names rather than a new series. Of course I would’ve loved if Hell’s Paradise lived up to the hype as other MAPPA anime, but I personally had no issues with the animation this series did have, as it was consistent the whole way through. I actually compared it to Dororo more than anything else in terms of both style and story, so I wasn’t disappointed at all by it.
Anyways, my rambling aside.. of course I’m planning to read the manga at some point. It’s just a matter of when (and if I remember). As I said in that last review, the final episode didn’t leave off on a terrible cliffhanger (or I didn’t see it that way at least), so I'm not going completely insane wondering about what happens next, but I am still mildly curious. I can imagine how some of the issues might be handled at this point, like how Sagiri is most likely gonna play a huge part in how Gabimaru gets his memories back since she knows him best outta everyone else currently on the island, especially when it comes to remembering his wife. With the whole team learning more about tao, I can bet that Shion will explain how just simple physical contact with others helps to improve one’s tao, since we already saw how Nurugai’s hugs helped Sagiri restore her strength a little. And I have no doubt the new asaemon are gonna cause trouble just from the glare that Shugen dude showed at the very end.
About Gabimaru’s wife being real or an illusion.. I sorta kinda know her name already from seeing other people’s tags, so I’m fairly certain she exists. Hopefully. I’ve also spoiled myself on some of the characters who might survive til the end (only because I can not handle another heartbreak like I did with Tenza!) but I steered clear of practically everything else though when it comes to the fights, the tensen and overall story.
I’ll continue the reviews whenever the anime decides to continue and hopefully I won’t nitpick all the differences between anime vs manga too much if I do decide to read beforehand.
Thank you for the ask and I hope you have a lovely rest of your day/night!!

🍂🌰🍁MY FALL 2021 WATCHLIST 🍁🌰🍂
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This season is full! And for a soft-hearted person, it seems we got a few good dramas/slices of life, and to get us all hyped we got some great sequels and supernatural series ahead.
Blue Period - adapted by Seven Arcs, it follows the story of a boy who discovers the joy of drawing and a new journey starts for him. This anime is already gaining a lot of attention, I love the topic of this one, and it seems it’s going to be one of the best from this season. Genres: drama, slice of life.
Heike Monogatari - based on a book and brought by Science Saru, this anime shows the war’s events through the perspective of Biwa a young girl who makes a living as a traveling musician. This one looks beautiful.
Deji Meets Girl - an Orginal by Lidenfilms, this one follows the story of a girl who works as a part-timer in her family hotel, once a mysterious guess arrive “Deji” things start to happen. This one is one minute per episode, really short but the trailer looked really cool with such an eye-catching animation. Genres: slice of life
Mieruko-chan - studio Passione brings us the story of Miko, a normal high school who suddenly starts to see gruesome and hideous monsters. Now she tries to continue living a normal life enduring her fear to keep herself and her friend out of danger. I already feel this one is going to be one of my favorites. Genres: comedy, horror, supernatural.
86 2nd Season - if you haven’t watched the first season go and do it because this is amazing!! So excited for this season. A-1 Picture did a great job on the first season so I’m expecting the same for this one. Genres: action, drama, sci-fi
Mushoku Tensei 2nd Season - it’s already here! I have high expectations for this one, despite some things I dislike from season one, this story it’s really worthy and unique in a good way. Let’s see what the future holds for Rudeus. Genres: drama, fantasy, ecchi
Takt Op. Destiny - Tbh I added this to my watchlist to complete the bench on the fantasy myanimelist is holding🌝 I didn’t get what was this about but studio Mappa and Madhouse are working together on this one, so I’m expecting good content. Genres: action, fantasy
Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu - Shouko Komi became popular on the first day of school, but there’s one problem, she doesn’t know how to communicate, one day a boy named Hitohito notice this and it’s decided to help Komi. This one looks so cute️ I can’t wait to watch it. Genres: comedy, slice of life
Platinum End - from the creators of Bakuman and Death Note, this story follows Mirai Kakehashi a boy who ended up with a depressing life that decides to commit suicide but on that day he got saved by a pure white girl who grants him supernatural powers and a chance to become the new God. I can tell this is going to be amazing and unexpected. Genres: drama, supernatural
Taishou Otome Otogibanashi - another one I added to complete the bench🌝 but this one synopsis got my attention, and it kind of gives me a similar feeling to Shinigami Bocchan, so I’m kind of excited about this since its feel like the cute comedy type. Genres: comedy, romance, slice of life
Saihate no Paladin - Will he's being raised by three undead. But one day, Will starts to wonder: "Who am I?" Will must unravel the mysteries of this faraway dead man's land, and unearth the secret pasts of the undead. This got me really curious and so far it seems it's going to be good, I haven’t seen anything from the studio in charge but I’m hoping this turned out to be a surprise this season. Genres: action, fantasy
Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Ressha-hen - well we all know what’s this about and knowing ufotable animation is going to be insane. I’m looking forward to the extra content!
Ousama Ranking - also added this to complete the bench. This one is base on a web manga that follows Boiji a deaf child, a powerless prince who dreams of becoming the world’s greatest king. I’m always in for coming of age story so I’m expecting a wholesome story. Genres: adventure, comedy, fantasy
I got a packed season once again, but luckily I don't have much series from the last one. As for now One Piece, Detective Conan, and Shaman King are the ongoing series for me ^^ Hope this season doesn't disappoint us, and may everyone enjoy it!

to you in 2000 years
MAPPA knows what they were doing and I wonder if manga sales will go up since they left the anime off at such an inconclusive, yet pivotal moment.
Soooo... I started reading this because I couldn’t wait until 2023 to see how it ends.
Tumblr media
I started reading because I’ve been keeping up with the anime for years and there’s a lot of details I’ve forgotten about.
I also started reading because, given the “plot twist” revealed this last last season, I suspected Isayama might have dropped breadcrumbs about what may have led Eren to make the drastic decision that genocide was the obvious way to go.
I’ll be honest, I initially felt like Eren’s decision to commit genocide came out of left field. It felt like Isayama had not executed the character arc well at all because I couldn’t think of a moment in which Eren would have demonstrated he would be one to take such drastic actions.
But, lo and behold, once I started reading I realized that the man didn’t drop breadcrumbs throughout the story, he dropped the whole baguette 🥖 in chapter 1... I had just forgotten about it + other specific moments.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Truth is that I really love snk. I find it’s world-building fascinating and find Eren’s character deep and complex--just like one of my other favorite examples of a masterfully crafted and deeply complex character, CLAMP’s Sakurazuka Seishiro.
Plus... any mangaka that bakes time-loops and interactions in dream-world into their stories has my full attention.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think one of my favorite things about time-loops or plot twists in general is the privilege of re-reading and re-experiencing the plot from a new and more informed perspective.
Tumblr media
I love seeing how the author executed the plot twist and gave us clues as to what was coming.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So we’ll see how many of my hunches are right!
It took me this long to start reading the manga because I am not a huge fan of the art style and felt like, considering my experience watching the anime, some parts would drag on with speech bubbles full of text.
Actually, that’s another reason I did not want to read Haikyu!!, too much text... But when I started reading hq and loved the manga even more than I love the anime even with it’s amazing animation, I knew I had to read snk too.
Ohohoho, all that to say I am excited to re-experience how this story unfolds given what I know now!
Tumblr media
I’m just glad ma 🍒, @justafrenchlondoner gave me permission to read snk instead of tg:re 😂🥖.
Here’s to making delicious sandwiches with Isayama’s breadcrumbs!
If anyone reads this, I might not tag my posts about snk because the fandom scares me bahaha. JJK fandom is crazy enough for me, so... I’ll be tagging snk sandwich!

2021 Retrospective: Anime of the Year
Link Click
Well, well, well, China is finally taking over Anime… Jokes aside, this is my favourite Anime of the year. It has gorgeous animation, an amazing concept and a very interesting dynamic between the two main characters. The story is perfectly executed and leaves almost every episode hanging on a cliffhanger that makes you want to watch more. I certainly was very happy that I could binge-watch this show after my sister insisted on it. If I could find one problem with it though, it would be the ending. It’s a massive cliffhanger and we’ll have to wait until spring to find out how the situation is going to be resolved. I mean, there is a teaser now (and it’s just animation flexing) but not much more we know. I’m certainly looking forward to it and who knows? If the second season has a great ending, this may become a 10/10.
Honourable Mentions:
ODD TAXI
This show is the equivalent of an anthropomorphic Anime written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. All characters stand out and everything that gets mentioned has a pay-off. ODD TAXI really is a show, that I don’t want to spoil, because damn, that finale goes hard, but the one thing I can say is that Episode 4 is probably one of the best stand-alone Episodes I have ever seen. It’s essentially just a twenty minute long monologue, but it’s very captivating and just pulls you into the life of a character you have never met before. Without saying too much, the character in question will be mentioned in another category later.
Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan the Final Part 1
MAPPA really did a great job, taking over production from Studio Wit for the final season of AoT. The characters look good and even though some people were weirded out by the use of CGI for the titans, it didn’t really bother me much. It’s a great season and I really hope that the second Part continues with this directing. (Yes, I know it started airing a few weeks ago, no I haven’t watched it yet)
SK8 the Infinity
While it wasn’t the best show of the year, it sure was fun to watch tumblr loose their minds over this show every week. It’s a very fun time, at least for the first six episodes. Then it just hits you with the feels and what the f**k moments. It’s an experience I can’t really put in words. All I can say is that Reki is Best Boy, AD*M belongs in jail and the English dub is iconic, my bitches, bros and non-binary hoes.
Vanitas no Carte/The Case Study of Vanitas
While this show adapts the manga to a T, I still feel a little let down by it. I mean, the Animation is gorgeous, the Soundtrack is groovy, I love Ishikawa Kaito as Noé, but damn, does this Anime not understand Vanitas’ character. Yes, this is mainly about Natsuki Hanase. It’s just really baffling how bad that casting choice is, because in the Manga, I love Vantias and here I prefer Noé. I also don’t understand why the Opening and Ending make this show look like a soft Slice-of-Life/Shounen-Ai, when it’s anything but that. It feels like they didn’t really know how to market this, but honestly what more do you need than: Mystery/Steampunk/Vampire?

Anon said: [Spoilers for non-manga readers] opinion on Baku's hero name?
Very Bakugou, honestly don’t mind it at all! Mostly just surprised it’s, like, legal in the bnha universe for heroes to call themselves stuff like explodo-kills (and also that there isn’t a character limit for hero names??) but that Bakugou would stick with it is pretty damn in character for him so I like it xD still, I’ll probably just call him Dynamight if I’ll ever need to use his hero name lmao
Anon said: not to be the most romantic sap but uh just a kiss by lady a is killin me
Nothing sappy about letting romantic songs get to you!!!! I say, as I’m constantly crying over romantic songs so this mindset benefits me as well lol
Anon said: i may or may not have stumbled across some of your older kiribaku art, the stuff with akane, and she's the best child oc tbh. i actually like her and i tend to not be a fan of child ocs but she's just the cutest darn thing 🥰
I’m so glad you like her!!!!! She was a lot of fun, what a good gremlin ;;;
Anon said: uve heard of dragon!kiri w his hair spikes up, now get ready for dragon!kiri w his hair dowm lookin like the softest boy
AW HECK I think I’ve drawn him in the past, actually!!!! Spike-haired Kiri will forever be my fav Kiri, but there’s just something about hair down Kiri isn’t it!! What a cute boy ;;;; all sharp edges and soft curves, what a lovely sight
Anon said: can i just say your itafushi art is so cute? these two already make me feel and then your art just (つω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥`)
THANK YOU SO MUCH I really need to draw them more, don’t I! goge kinda monopolized my attention there, but the way itafushi makes me feel..........boy the way they make me feel ;;;;
Anon said: good day, poké au thought: 12 y/o bakugo somehow catches a dreepy as like his 2nd pokemon and never questions it
WHY NOT WHY NOT I have a whole team in my mind for the boy tbh but dreepy is so cute ;;;; and anyway, I like my poke!bakugou with as many dragon types as he could possibly get his hands on hahaha
Anon said: Please know that, amongst other factors, you were one of the maon reasons I stsrted Jujutsu Kaisen two days ago and there isnothing more to say except thank you and I'm absolutely in debt with you for that, thank you so much 😍
I’m so so SO glad you’re liking it!!!!!! It can get kinda heavy but it’s such a great story.... honestly I’d been wanting to start it since I saw the first pv for the anime all the way back last year but I was like, you know it’s a mappa anime! so I wanted to watch the anime as a new thing, cause I love mappa, but three episodes in I couldn’t hold back and just binged it. It’s kind of story that just makes you wanna drink it all in one go, isn’t it? so good so good
Anon said: makeup artist kirishima and model bakugo or makeup artist bakugo and model kirishima? :0c
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm can’t say I see either of them much into fashion tbh, but if I had to pick probably model Kiri and artist Baku? I just don’t think Baku would be able to stay still enough to get photographed, and he wouldn’t like the photographer bossing him around anyway, and catwalks would be impossible for him to stomach imho, he’s too restless for it! At least it’s the way I see it haha
Anon said: fdgdhdkfhdafs i had a thought, what if bakugo prefers dogs and kirishima prefers cats and when they meet each other and become friends it's like, "oh." because they have some striking similarities to their fave animals
That’s been my headcanon for a while now, actually!! I think for me it came from two characters in a manga I like that are a lot like a dog and a cat but have inverted fav animals and when I read about that I was like “oh, right, makes sense since they like each other” and then my brain turned it krbk because when does it not lmao
Anon said: your art is the soothing balm to my soul recently, thank you for posting so much beautiful content. i hope you have a lovely week. ♡
sob thank you so much, I’m glad my doodling can help you feel better ;; <3
Anon said: Friendly reminder anon from last time: that post I left last time I had only eaten 7 gingersnaps that day and hadn’t drank any water. So that encouraged me to actually self care. Thank you.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! well I hope you’re taking care of yourself today too! And as fair trade, I’ll do the same myself! <3
Anon said: Hi! I'm an artist and I'm thinking of making a sideblog for my art. Do you have any tips?
Ah man, I’m sorry but I’m not the best person to ask this to! I started this sideblog cause I had too many followers on my main and I didn’t want my stuff to be seen by that many people at first, so whatever I did probably isn’t what you’re looking for :( but really there isn’t much to it, just post whatever you like to draw, tag it as best as you can (but remember that only the first five tags appear in the search page) and be patient, since whatever you do at first you won’t get much attention anyway - the only real advice I can give is to draw something that makes you happy and that you’d draw anyway even if no one were to see it, it’ll make keep posting despite a possible lack of activity a lot easier!
Anon said: Your goge art🥺🥺
I just love them so much ( TT’’’TT)9
Anon said: how the fuck have i not been following you? I remember seeing your bakushima art in the bnha tag and always thinking it's so cute. Now you're into JJK too??? and the satosugu art??? fuckin, diabetes incarnate. I love it. I love you. Your art 10/10. I'm tired lmao.
WELL thank you for the follow!! And for thinking my stuff is cute!!!!! I do my best with that, I want all the soft things for my favs 😌
Anon said: Are you gonna draw Gojou/Getou comic?? 👉🏻👈🏻 WOULD LOVE TO READ IT
you mean an actual doujin? I don’t think I will, sorry! I’m really no good at long projects orz but thank you so much for wishing to read something like that from me!!! ;A;
Anon said: Hello! YOUR ART IS SO FREAKING GORGEOUSSSS!!! I love them so much!! If I may ask you one question. Between Getou amd Gojou, who do you see as top/bottom? Just curious
THANK YOU!!!!! And I honestly don’t care as long as they’re happy and together!!! please let them be happy and together 🙏🙏🙏
Anon said: i want you to know!!! i followed you for your kiribaku art but!!! i love your art so much that idc what you post because it's all just!!!! incredible and wonderful and stunning!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!! this means a lot to me so seriously thank you so much!!!!
Anon said: d'you think bakugo has like headaches or migraines after training or battles because of how loud his quirk is? like, i listen to music slightly too loud and my head is sending me to hell. (unless you go with the hoh hc which is also 👌)
I like to think Baku’s body is attuned enough to his own quirk that he wouldn’t get drawbacks of the kind tbh, though that wouldn’t be a bad thought for when he just starts to increase the output/width and strength of his explosions............ well, I myself suffer from chronic headaches and migraines so I’m always up for projecting on my favs ngl lmao
Anon said:  so like... dragon kirishima's eyes glow right? like, if we equate his dragon-ness to unbreakable his eyes glow? they also glow when he's half shifted? honestly i just live glowing eyes
Oh hell yeah I’m all for that, definitely definitely, I love glowing eyes with my whole heart and Kiri’s eyes in unbreakable are just so!!!!!! NGH *chef kiss* the more of unbreakable there is in his dragon form the happier I am ( TT^TT)9
Anon said: me, scrolling through your blog: ah shit guess im gonna have to start watching jjk
!!!!! hope it won’t hurt you too much, anon!!
Anon said: dragon!kiri and bakugo having a tug-of-war match over a piece of meat. both have it in their mouths. both are determined to win.
Kiri is turned into his dragon form and Baku still wins, hell yeah
Anon said: your satosugu is top tier!! it's hard to find stuff for them that isn't straight up angst so your art has been super cool and also very very cute!! (tho if you went with angst, it wouldn't be a bad thing obviously)
AH I’m so happy to hear you like them!!!! but also happy you wouldn’t mind angst, as I do like them the best happy and soft but my brain, my brain has been throwing sads my way for a while now 👀 I got some ideas
Anon said: What program/device do you use??
Easy Paint Tool SAI and a wacom intuos!! Though I got myself an ipad+procreate just yesterday and I’ve been messing around with it, let’s see how that one goes!
Anon said: *inahles* i am simping for mohawk man please tell me everything about your ocs immediately or i will detonate
THANK YOU FOR LIKING HIM HE’S CALLED DAVIDE Dav for short, he’s a cat of a man and a music instrument enthusiast (mostly string ones, but he’s very good with the piano as well) - he works in a music instruments store, and he’s a uni student majoring in philosphy! He doesn’t like bothersome things, he isn’t very good at taking anything seriously or putting effort in stuff, but he’s very chill to spend time with and generally a nice chat both if you want mindless thoughts or deep conversations (he’s a philosophy major after all). He can’t sing for shit, he’s got two cats (tago and schelly!), and he just wants a quiet life to laze around but all his friends are hurricanes in human bodies, but then again, he picked them himself so he can’t complain. He’s a good boy!! I’m planning a comic for him and his boy Ross >:]

I don't know if you've heard about this Beni, but some of the fans in the fandom on Twitter are harassing the staffs of MAPPA. Last week was the OST soundtrack, this week was the character designs, CGI, and every minor details. They reply hate tweets under the staffs' tweets, they tagged their accounts on their hate posts. It is infuriating and I am both embarassed and angry at these fans. And it's funny, because whenever I go to their profile to just block them, I found out that they are mostly new accounts (0 following!), troll accounts, which means they created THAT account for the sole purpose of spreading hate and bitching about MAPPA. It's insane how low can these people be! The lowest of the low form. It's okay to talk or post if they're disappointed but for the love of God, tagging and harassing the staffs is just SO disrespectful. I cannot stress enough how infuriated I am seeing them under the staff's accounts posts. They are absolutely an abomination to the fandom. I have to remind every manga readers that the anime IS made for anime audiences. We have the manga, that's our source material. Let the anime fans enjoy theirs. It's okay to give constructive criticisms but if fans are just complaining and whining and hating, one must learn how to shut the hell up.
I don't like aotwitter just because it's so toxic on so many levels, I just open it time to time whenever I want to see some updates to the official accounts. But to hell with these fans. This is why I enjoy Tumblr most especially YOUR community because the fans here are more chill and you don't tolerate if fans are being disrespectful. I absolutely love how you appreciate this new season and just really enjoying it. Maybe if they have the same perspective view as yours, maybe they'll see and appreciate all the MAPPA staffs has been doing.
hello anonie bean, ah yes unfortunately i have been informed about the type of activities that go on within the aotwt community and honestly i’m not surprised, just disappointed. i personally can’t speak for that community itself because it’s not my place, i’m not in it but i guess a little input on how i feel can’t hurt.
coming from someone that edits and has studied years of technological design, graphic design and visual communication to fine arts i understand how long of a process it takes to be proud and happy with your final product. i understand how much work, energy, time and effort is put into the final result. so i understand what kind of weight mappa is carrying upon their shoulders. especially with a deadline and the audience they cater to.
you have to put yourselves into the shoes of the animators. i can’t emphasise this enough. imagine being so excited to start this new project, putting countless hours, an enormous amount of hard work and fine tuning your product and finally being happy with it. only to get backlash on every single little thing you’ve done wrong from people who don’t even know, what it takes to do your job— yet they’re telling you how to do your job. that just doesn’t— no i can’t even, the audacity. imagine what it’s like to be told to go k yourself for animating something wrong, for removing something, for not using the right ost, etc. animators are humans, they’re not perfectly tuned machines. they have feelings just as much as a viewer, i can’t stress this enough. be careful with what you say. words leave marks. how would you feel if your own criticism that you use at them, was targeted at you instead? imagine the amount of stress they’re under, they’re only human just as much as we are.
constructive criticism is fine but i refuse to understand the concept of plain old slander. if you don’t like it— don’t watch it. simple as that. it’s their project, let them play around with it.
every other studio turned down aot but mappa studio didn’t, they chose to pick it up knowing how big this series is. appreciate them for just doing that alone— without them there wouldn’t be a final season. instead of complaining be grateful for what they’re doing and what we have left because one day, there isn’t going to be anymore attack on titan content.
mappa’s doing an amazing job with aot and honestly speaking they absolutely popped off and didn’t have to go off so hard but they did that— from animation to tiny little animation details, promotional art to even drafting concepts— chef’s kisses absolutely love them and their extraordinary team. they’re legends @ mappa you’re doing fking amazing sweetie— don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
the series is coming to an end soon, so instead of all that negativity, let’s just enjoy every second we have left with this spectacular storyline. from wit studio, to mappa studio to the man that created this phenomenal story, isayama himself— without them we wouldn’t be here. let’s make happy memories while we still can and appreciate what we have left 💗

RATE EPISODE 73: SAVAGERY 129 responses
Tumblr media
As expected, this highly anticipated episode didn’t fail to deliver and fans absolutely loved it, with over 95% giving it a 4-5 star rating.
I loved the episode 73. The fight between Levi and Zeke was spectacular! The animation was 10/10, definitely worth watching. Good, old Kenny's theme brought memories back. I have to admit that Mappa made Levi look hundred times better and definitely more masculine.
RATE EPISODE 74: SOLE SALVATION 128 responses
Tumblr media
While episode 74 generated slightly less enthusiasm across the board, it still managed to garner a high rating from respondents.
when i read the manga version, i wasn't that much moved by zeke's backstory. but with the music, voice and color additions... it's fucking heartbreaking. mappa did an outstanding job. and the tension when he activated the thunder spear???? the animation? we were blessed. ALSO! the movement of the bodies when they threw the ball looked so realistic! it's a tiny detail that i loved.

WHICH WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT OF EPISODE 73? 128 responses
Tumblr media
Levi vs. Zeke 2.0 got the largest piece of the pie, getting 23.4% of the vote. Behind that was the moment when Levi had to kill his comrades in titan form (14.8%), Armin punching Eren in the face (14.1%), Eren disparaging Armin and Mikasa (11.7%), and at 8.6%, that one screenshot of Armin the entire fandom was thirsting over. Shoutout to the person in the comments who wanted Mikasa to pin them down (the pollster writing this feels the same!).
💥🐒 mOnKe and Lebi 🍄and Jean go BOOM 🐎💥
For me, the real gem of EMA talk isn't that one Armin frame that everyone's going crazy about. It's the frame before it, that low angle of Mikasa half sitting on the table holding Armin down. Holy...I wanted to be Armin so bad right at that moment.
WHICH WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT OF EPISODE 74? 127 responses
Tumblr media
35.4% felt the most memorable scene from this episode was the ending scene where Zeke triggers the thunderspear and sends Levi flying. Behind that was the moment where Zeke listens to Grisha yelling through the door (18.1%), Zeke and Ksaver coming up with the euthenasia plan together (8.7%) and Ksaver telling Zeke to sell out his parents (7.9%).

In an episode filled with both verbal and physical violence, we asked which character you thought best exemplified the episode’s title. 35.2% felt that Eren was the worst offender with his words and actions against Armin and Mikasa. 29.7% felt that Levi’s violent acts against Zeke were deserving of the title “savagery.” Only 22.7% felt that Floch most suited the episode title, while just a small handful, 12.5%, felt that Zeke is the one most deserving of the term.
HOW BADLY DID YOU FEEL ABOUT LEVI HAVING TO KILL HIS OWN SQUAD? 127 responses
Tumblr media
The majority felt, on at least some level, sorrow for what Levi had to do in order to survive and catch up to Zeke. Though a small handful didn’t feel too bad for our Captain.
ON A SCALE OF 1-5, HOW WOULD YOU RATE LEVI VS. ZEKE 2.0? 127 responses
Tumblr media
In general, the fight received positive reception. Though it wasn’t all hype, as the highest ranking was actually a 4 and not a 5. It was hype, but not quite hype enough for us manga readers.
I loved Levi vs Zeke 2.0 but they really should have used the instrumental version instead of K21, I laughed out loud when I heard that beacuse I felt like it took all the seriousness from the scene
levi and zeke goat
WHY DO YOU THINK FLOCH MADE THE RECRUITS BATTER INSTRUCTOR SHADIS? 128 responses
Tumblr media
The majority of respondents feel that Floch’s motivations are a mix of factors. For those who did think there was a more specific reason, though, 16.4% felt it’s simply a matter of Floch having a massive ego trip. 10.2% feel that Floch truly believes what he says about taking out the old and bringing in the new, and 7.8% believe Floch simply wanted to make an example out of Shadis (presumably alluding to the fate of those who resist the Yeagerists).
He was testing if the recruits can go this far
He wants to intimidate people into joining his cause by using violence and threats of arrest and also make them feel empowered by his ideals.
Standard protocol when there's a change of regime, you'd want to eliminate the old guards' influence ASAP.
That's how fascism works
All of the above and the fact that he's a fascist.
HOW CUTE WAS BITTY ZEKE? 130 responses
Tumblr media
After a long time waiting, we finally got to see child Zeke in animated form. The vast majority think he was cute as a button, ready to pinch his little baby cheeks! Only a small handful think bby Zeke is anything but cute.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT GRISHA’S TREATMENT OF ZEKE? 130 responses
Tumblr media
This chapter created more controversy surrounding Grisha after it’s publication. In general, fans still aren’t particularly proud of Grisha’s behavior. 36.9% felt that Zeke didn’t deserve any of the treatment he got from his father, and 24.6% outright want to give Grisha the award for worst parent in the entire series. 24.6% don’t approve of Grisha’s behavior, but they do empathize with the way Grisha must have felt. 10.8% feel that while he could have treated Zeke better, he also could have been much worse.
Zeke was a sweet child but no child deserves to be treated like that regardless of how nice or well behaved they are. Grisha is disgusting.
Grisha was a large dick and asshole and he deserved the all punishment he got.
Grisha is a terrible father but such a well written character
it's crazy to me how people really thought grisha wasn't that in the wrong in terms of how he raised zeke.
DO YOU FEEL THAT ZEKE WOULD HAVE GROWN INTO AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT KIND OF PERSON IF GRISHA HAD TREATED HIM BETTER? 129 responses
Tumblr media
Just over half of respondents think it’s possible Zeke could have become a different kind of person if he’d had a brighter and happier childhood, though they didn’t want to say for sure as they feel that Grisha’s treatment wasn’t the sole reason why Zeke sees the world the way he does. 41.9% believe that the outcome of Zeke’s mindset would have been completely different. Only a few think that he would have come to the same conclusions about the world either way.
Unless Grisha gives up being a restorationist I don't see it as better treatment, if he does then yes
Yes. The whole point for the euthanasia plan was that Eldian children don't have to go through what he went through.
WHO DO YOU THINK HAD A BIGGER IMPACT IN SHAPING ZEKE’S WORLDVIEW? 126 responses
Tumblr media
When it comes to “father figures” in Zeke’s life, 65.1% believe that Ksaver holds much more responsibility than Grisha does when it comes to the way Zeke views the world.
WHO TURNED OUT MORE LIKE GRISHA, IN YOUR OPINION? 128 responses
Tumblr media
Between Grisha’s two sons, 68% of respondents feel that Eren is the brother who turned out much more similarly to Grisha, leaving only 32% who feel the opposite and think Zeke ultimately turned out more like Grisha in the end (For those who are curious, 81% of anime-only fans feel that Eren is the one who turned out more like Grisha).
WHO WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO PUNCH IN THE FACE AFTER THESE EPISODES? 129 responses
Tumblr media
There was a lot that happened in these episodes that could have bred resentment from fans. From the options provided, 35.7% of respondents would most like to punch Floch in the face. 22.5% wish to channel their inner Armin and give Eren a sock to the face. 14.7% felt more visceral toward Grisha. 11.6% don’t want to punch anyone at all. For those who wanna punch the pollsters, meet us out back at 16:00 hours.
Floch sucks
HOW DO YOU FEEL FINALLY GETTING TO SEE THE PAINFUL EMA CONVERSATION IN ANIME FORM? 127 responses
Tumblr media
A lot has happened since chapter 112 published, but the chapter still continues to stick with us and spark conversation. With such a highly anticipated scene finally being animated, we wanted to know how you felt seeing the scene reimagined with music, voice acting and color. 29.9% just felt that the chapter hits much differently now after the contents of chapter 138. 25.2% had a much harder time watching the scene in anime form than they felt reading the manga. 12.6% felt even more strongly, expressing extreme heartbreak over E/MA’s breakup. Only a handful of respondents felt the scene hit much harder in the manga.
I'm over it, I felt nothing. Props to Yuki Kaji though, his voice acting is as amazing as ever.
I liked both manga and anime versions, but hearing Armin's sharp intakes of breath from being hit ;~; MY POOR BABY!
M M G H, boi
mmgh
There is no pain, only support for whatever horny animator drew that shot of Armin.
I love EMA emotionally destroying each other and Mappa made it SO FUCKING GOOD, I watched this scene like 100 times
Eren = me | Armin's fist = EMA scene punching me across my expressionless face | Mikasa = my anime-only gf
BEFORE THE FINAL CHAPTER HITS, WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS EREN’S “TRAIN OF THOUGHT” IN REGARDS TO HIS WORDS IN THIS CONVERSATION? 126 responses
Tumblr media
With the last chapter just over a week away, we’re hoping to finally get some closure in terms of Eren’s characterization and the choices he’s made. 42.9% believe that Eren chose to be cruel to his friends in the hope it would drive them to be willing to put an end to Eren’s life. 24.6% felt the opposite, hoping that Eren would push them into a corner where they wouldn’t interfere with his plan at all. 18.3% still aren’t sure what to think. Will we get answers, Isayama?!
He wants to "free" Mikasa and armin from himself because he knew he was gonna die
Probably the first option but there might be some truth to what he was saying.
He definitely wanted to push them away and antagonize them but I'm still not completely sure why. I don't feel we've gotten a satisfying explanation.
He chose to be cruel to Mikasa and Armin in an attempt to make it so they wouldn't mourn him when he was dead and could be free of him entirely.
Eren still has heart warming feelings to Mikasa and - by being cruel - he wanted her to let him go (and most likely) kill him. His feelings to Armin however are much colder and they don't seem to like each other anymore. They are way too different. Armin and Eren are like two deities who will always fight each other.
Like he said in 138, he wanted to push them away so they would move on from his death and live happily without him.
SOME DIALOGUE FROM THE EMA CONVERSATION WAS CUT OR SHORTENED. WHICH PART(S) DID YOU MISS THE MOST? 125 responses
Tumblr media
Due to time constraints, the EMA conversation took a big hit in terms of how much content was cut from it. Of the cuts we noticed, the dialogue snippets that were most missed by manga readers were; Eren bringing up Armin’s good judgement when they were younger, Eren telling Mikasa that the “real her” disappeared in the mountain cabin, the mention of Ackermans being a “byproduct” of titan science, and the mention that Ackermans manifest the power of titans in human form.
OVERALL, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE AFOREMENTIONED CUTS? 123 responses
Tumblr media
When it comes to how manga readers actually felt about the cuts in the EMA conversation, 35% agreed that they felt bitter about them, while still understanding that there was probably little other choice. 22% think it was just too watered down and cut down the impact significantly. 14.6% didn’t care, 11.4% felt the cuts were actually a positive thing, and 10.6% feel that the manga is simply just the superior medium for this series.
I find it interesting that the titan science stuff was cut and wonder if maybe Isayama agreed to those cuts bc he knows he won't have time to really explain in the last chapter of the manga.
Oof, too many important informations have been cut.
I'm okay either way!
Although I would've loved to see all of those aforementioned cuts animated, I understand why they had to be cut in the first place, so I'm not bitter by it at all. I still think the conversation still had the impact it was intended to have.
I kind of understand why some dialogues would have to be cut but it lessened the impact of how Eren tried to hurt his friends which I personally think is too much even if he might have good intentions in doing so. I also like how MAPPA rearranges scenes to better fit the airtime limitation of each episode.
MAPPA CHANGED EREN’S EXPRESSION AFTER HE WAS CALLED OUT BY ARMIN. THOUGHTS? 127 responses
Tumblr media
A small change can impact a lot… or perhaps not. 34.6% felt let down by the change in Eren’s facial expression after Armin calls him out for hurting Mikasa, feeling that his original expression spoke volumes about his true feelings about what he’d done. 28.3% didn’t notice any change at all and so are unaffected. 15.7% are on a similar page and feel that there really wasn’t enough of a difference to gripe about anything, and 9.4% actually preferred the way MAPPA handled Eren in this snippet.
as they did when mikasa calls him out in liberio, they harden his expressionstry to make him look like a heartless monster with no empathy for his friends. this expression hinted that he was hurt by telling all of that to his friends, so his self sacrifice motivations can be misunderstood by anime onlies, or worse: they may even think it comes out of nowhere.
The manga was just superior here, from his expression to the fact that Armin did manage to make him bleed. It was disappointing.
I read this chapter way too long ago, I don't remember this stuff
He looks a lot more hurt and regretful in the Manga. Anime just looks annoyed.
Not a big deal to me. Manga is definitely superior though.
In the manga Eren was more human, while here we can clearly see his anger towards Armin's words.
THE ANIME ADAPTATION CUT OUT A BIT OF CONTEXT IN REGARDS TO LEVI STATING THAT THEY WILL FEED A YEAGERIST TO HISTORIA AFTER SHE GIVES BIRTH. DO YOU THINK THIS MAKES THINGS CONFUSING FOR THE ANIME-ONLIES? 123 responses
Tumblr media
Historia’s pregnancy plot continues to get the shaft (for better or for worse), with the mention of her eventually eating the Yeagerist that eats Zeke being cut out entirely. 39% of respondents felt that this was a poor choice on MAPPA’s part, feeling that it will make things confusing for anime only fans (“why would they feed Zeke to a Yeagerist?”). 26% feel the opposite, and think anime only fans should be able to put 2 and 2 together to realize where Levi was going with his idea. 22% aren’t sure if it actually makes things confusing, and 10.6% just don’t care.
I'm not sure how confusing this makes it for anime-onlies but them cutting out mentions of her pregnancy makes it seem even less important than it already does.
That plan was shut down so quickly it doesn't matter
I don't/didn't really understand this. None of the Yeagerist have royal blood... maybe I'm missing something. I figured he was just joking? Bc, tactically, what does Historia eating a Yeagerist do or have to do with anything?
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE ADAPTATION OF THE ZEKE RUNNING PANEL? 124 responses
Tumblr media
When Zeke ran from Levi in the manga, the scene was memed to death. 46.8% of respondents weren’t disappointed in MAPPA’s adaptation and felt it was just as enjoyable as it was in the manga. 29.8% felt even more strongly, thinking MAPPA did an even better job than Isayama had done. 17.7% still prefer the manga version.
It was funny in the manga but not in the anime and that's probably for the best given the weight of what's about to happen.
I  honestly don't remember the running panel lmao
Funny monke
HOW WELL WAS ZEKE’S BACKSTORY ADAPTED, IN YOUR OPINION? 126 responses
Tumblr media
60.3% felt that MAPPA did an incredible job with executing Zeke’s backstory in the anime, with the impact feeling even greater than it did in the original manga. 37.3% agree to a lesser degree, simply being pleased that it was faithful to the source material and feel thankful enough for that. Only a sliver of the pie felt that MAPPA didn’t deliver well on this or didn’t care.
Made him too sympathetic/made grisha look even worse
MAPPA REPLACED THE MONKEY PLUSHIE WITH A RAM PLUSHIE IN KSAVER’S VISION. THOUGHTS? 125 responses
Tumblr media
We got a couple of Easter Eggs in this episode, with one of them being the inclusion of a ram plushie in place of the monkey doll that was in the manga. Knowing now that Ksaver’s Beast Titan was a ram, we were curious how many of you caught this. 55.2% absolutely loved the easter egg, and 31.2% just felt that it was neat. A few were confused, missed monke, or wanted to squish the adorable plushie. Baa!
I jumped out of my seat seeing that little fecker. I was literally like "...!!!! THE RAM!!! WE KNOW KSAVER'S TITAN NOW SO THEY PUT IN A RAM!! YOU..!!! ISAYAMAAAAA!!" It was hilarious XD
THE DOLLS IN KSAVER’S VISION APPEAR TO RESEMBLE ARMIN, MIKASA AND HISTORIA. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS? 121 responses
Tumblr media
Aside from the ram plushie were also dolls that some thought seemed to resemble Armin, Mikasa and Historia. We got very mixed responses on this question. 20.7% felt that it was simply just a fun easter egg and didn’t hold any kind of narrative meaning. 19% were unsure what to think at all. 16.5% think the third doll actually represents Ymir Fritz and not Historia. 15.7% felt it was meant to represent the three people Eren is working hardest to protect, and 9.1% didn’t think they represented anything.
i thought that was ymir fritz, zeke, and either eren or levi
I think the two dolls inside the box look more like Gabi and Falco but I'm not sure who the doll with the pink dress is, Ymir Fritz maybe?
I didn't even notice this, lmao. I'm bored of overthinking things like this, there's one chapter left y'all.
Oh, I thought it was Eren, Zeke and Ymir lol.
Reminds me of the Eren doll in the Lost Girls OVA.
The box represents those who we will see in the final chapter. Sorry Historia :'(
All of the above xD
The doll isn't Historia - It's Ymir Frtiz - and her position under the wagon means that Eren values Mikasa and Eren more than Ymir/anything else. I think the wagon is also significant to that bit where Eren confessed to the squad that they were the most important people in his life, and that he doesn't want anything bad to happen to them.
EREN TELLS ZEKE, “I’LL PUT AN END TO 2,000 YEARS OF TITAN DOMINATION.” EVEN AFTER EVERYTHING, DO YOU BELIEVE IT’S POSSIBLE THAT THIS WAS HIS TRUE INTENTION, AND THAT HE CAN STILL BE THE ONE TO MAKE IT HAPPEN? 122 responses
Tumblr media
Will there be a final twist in the series finale? 34.4% seem to think so, hoping that Eren’s words will ring true and he will somehow abolish titans from the world. 23% feel similarly, though they think he knew his actions would lead to the catalyst to rid titans from the world, rather than him doing it himself. 12.3% feel the opposite, and think Eren was simply just lying to Zeke about bringing an end to the titan power, and 9.8% think he’s just too dead at this point to accomplish anything. 19.7% aren’t sure what to predict.
Yes, ending the era of titans and setting Eldians free is one of Eren's goals.
GIVEN THAT ZEKE’S FLASHBACK ELEMENTS FROM 115 WERE ALSO ADAPTED IN THIS CHAPTER, DO YOU THINK THE FINAL EPISODE WILL HAVE ANY ANIME-ONLY SCENES? 124 responses
Tumblr media
The episode has already aired and we can now confirm that there were no additional scenes. 41.9% were correct in their hunch that the remaining contents would be enough to fill an entire episode - in fact, they didn't even end up animating all of it! What about Levi and Hange?!
Since we won't reach Ch. 121 or 122 I don't really care.
Since Mappa took over, not anymore :(
What tou MEAN ”the final episode”?!
HOW DO YOU FEEL KNOWING THAT ANIME ONLY FANS WON’T HAVE A SOLID ANSWER ON LEVI’S FATE FOR MONTHS? 127 responses
Tumblr media
We didn’t expect this question to come off as cruel as it now feels after MAPPA didn’t even throw us a bone in episode 75 about Levi’s fate. That being said, 29.1% are ready to snack on their popcorn while they watch anime onlies worry and theorize over Levi’s fate. 21.3% are simply feeling mischievous. 9.4% think it’s cruel to take any delight in anime watchers’ woes, as we also had to experience the same thing for several months. 33.9% think it will be next to impossible for anime only fans to avoid being spoiled about Levi’s fate.
It should be fairly obvious he's alive when they show Hange jumping in the river with him next episode.
Good. I think most of them will assume he's not dead yet though.
Maybe it will inspire some of them to read the manga to find out.
Ugh, I hope they won't be complaining as much as the manga readers did even though it was obvious he's not dead.
THE PREVIEW ONLY REVEALED ONE SCENE TO US. SO INSTEAD, WHICH MOMENT FROM CHAPTER 115/116 ARE YOU MOST ANTICIPATING? 126 responses
Tumblr media
31% of respondents were most looking forward to the moment where Pieck declared Eren as the enemy. 23% had most anticipated seeing Ymir revive Zeke (rip) and 19.8% were most looking forward to seeing Hange dive into the river with Levi’s injured body (double rip). 10.3% were most anticipating the scene with Eren, Pieck and Gabi in the jail room, and 7.1% were most hyped about Marley’s airships showing up onto the scene.
WE’VE ONLY GOT ONE EPISODE LEFT FOR THIS RUN! HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT IT? 125 responses
Tumblr media
59.2% were feeling hyped to get an announcement about a part 2 of the season. 24%, on the other hand, are bummed out and have a new void to fill in their heart while they wait. 11.2% feel similarly and on a greater level… the seasons between the SnK anime seasons are just the worst anime seasons of all!
Too distracted by manga-ending-anxiety to feel much about it
Disappointed. It's not actually the final season.
I'm ready for this season of heartbreak to be over thank you just put me out of my misery and stop dragging me along behind the car
I can't believe it's near ending already
DO YOU THINK WE WILL GET AN ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT THE NEXT ANIME INSTALLMENT NEXT WEEK? 122 responses
Tumblr media
54.1% of respondents were hopeful for a part 2 announcement and the good news is that MAPPA didn’t let them down. 19.7% were right on the nose with this one!
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODES?
GOAT
The scene with Levi's comrades turning into Titans was one of the most visually stunning moments for me; the whole panning out throughout as they all started turning sort of gave me chills. Levi's reaction to it all, and ultimately having to kill them too was heartbreaking. Honestly that entire scene was quite gripping. I hate to admit that watching it in anime form has sort of solidified me resonating with Zeke in regards to his relationship with Grisha. Dude just wanted to spend time with his freaking dad and instead went through all of that, I don't blame him for the resentment at all. Still a douche for some of the stuff he's done. And ersonally I prefer him over Eren. Eren never went through that kind of treatment from Grisha and ended up... like that. Also!!!!!! Love me some Bertholdt crumbs, thank you Mappa! God, I miss him. :(
The removal of mostly anything mentioning titan scientists/research and Ackermans being a byproduct of titan science makes me wonder if Isayama regretted introducing that. I was already disappointed the manga didn't expand on that and the anime made it worse. Almost nonexistent tbh. Loved seeing Zeke's backstory, like all the other children in this series, he deserved better.
The ost during Floch's speech was brilliant. Young Zeke and Grisha VAs also. Makes me want to adopt Zeke right there. Not sure if Pieck and Porco already appeared as background characters (in ep 13&14) there were some figures that looked like them so I can't wait for the next episode!
Nah, I just loved them
These were one of the best of the season!
i just want more, also i loved MAPPA's style so far
In those episodes, the emotions weren't as strong as in the manga. I didn't feel much. And for the EMA talk... well, I liked Eren's neutral expression in the manga better, it was more fitted. And the animation of his "fight" with Armin was absolutely terrible, and it's sad to say that when you know that Mappa can do so much better.
*points at Zeke* WITNESSED!!
MAPPA stans Armin, it shows, and I am 100% here for it.
Being aware if latest chapters, I see young Zeke with different eyes
Mappa has done a fabulous job so far. The only thing I hoped for is that they should not have made the face difference so obvious from previous seasons to the last one, for the benefit of anime-only people. Yes, they stayed true to the manga, but their animators had to have control over it, which is what happened in S1 where girls had some sort of gloss on their lips and Yams requested for them to be removed in succeeding episodes.. that tells me that the animators/mappa have some semblance of control over how the characters look
I think MAPPA is doing a good job with the episodes.
Feels. That is all.
I really loved how Mappa executed that scene wint Ksaver's wife's murder/suicide. In the manga, they just outright depict it happening in the room. In the anime, they blended it in with the present surroundings. It literally gave me the chills. I do worry that the missing dialogue from the EMA scene, especially Eren explaining how Mikasa's dedication to him is nothing but science. I also worry about him not mentioning the slave/freedom thing, bc afaik the dialogue in the leaked panel of 139 says ""you are free"", and I always thought it was gonna be related to that.

so...the MLQC anime
Tumblr media
It's the elephant in the room rn. We gotta talk about it!
First of all, shoutout to MAPPA for even giving us an anime of our boys, regardless of the end product, it's amazing that they did it in the first place, and shoutout to the animators and VAs that put a lot of time and effort into the show.
Now. We can all agree that this wasn't a perfect adaptation. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but it could've been much better!
A lot happened, a lot didn't happen, so first I'm gonna focus on the biggest issue.
I. The trailer
Tumblr media
Naturally, it was the trailer that got us all hyped for the anime, like "omg that scene is gonna be animated, it looks so good!!! I'm so excited!!"
And then they just. weren't in the anime.
Y'all know what scenes I'm talking about too (and if not, @daily-mlqc made a great post showing the scenes that never appeared). Like, it's one thing to not include certain scenes/change them, but it's another thing to show said scene in the trailer and not include it at all. It's basically false advertising!
The infamous Chapter 10 Victor shot, Lucien's Midnight Date shot, the shot from Gavin's Slightly Drunken Date....all of them unused....all of them holding so much potential
II. The boys
Obviously, you've only got so much time. You've only got so many episodes. But when the story is propelled by "Bonds" and important relationships, not growing those bonds sticks out a lot.
The boys were done pretty dirty and we all know it.
Tumblr media
Kiro was introduced, then pretty much ignored until the Hacker episode. I get that he doesn't make many appearances early on, but it would've been nice to build that relationship a bit more so we can really feel sad when he sacrifices himself to save MC on the rooftop. But I will say that his transformation into Helios was pretty good (but where was that phone call foreshadowing the transformation tho)
Tumblr media
Lucien was done fairly well. His episodes were executed pretty faithfully (especially the Ares reveal), but towards the end he kinda just....disappeared? Which is a shame bc the scenes between him and the MC after she finds out he's Ares are so damn good. It was the worst in the last ep, bc she didn't even interact with him at all and he kinda just disappears?? He got slight redemption, but not to the extent as in the game
Tumblr media
Gavin was done the best, undoubtedly, bc you can really feel the bond between him and the MC (that "wait for me" scene? Chills.) but it's bc of that that he feels so off in the last ep? Like I get that he's a changed person after everything, but brushing her off felt really weird to me.
Tumblr media
Victor. I could write a whole essay on how dirty they did him (he's my fave, after all). I've already gone in depth on the episode 7 debacle (it still makes my blood boil), so I won't repeat myself here, but TL;DR they did his character development so dirty. Like it looked like they were really trying to sell us on Victor/MC in the last few eps, but it felt kinda off to me bc all the development just isn't there (honestly, I blame Victor's weak "overemotional" response to her almost dying. That scene is what drives their relationship forward, so him not being as desperate and emotional in the game...grrr)
Tumblr media
MC is the real MVP of this anime, like she had a fully developed personality and cute/funny scenes that made her likeable and adorable (just think about it this way— she could’ve been like Yui from Diabolik Lovers. No one wants that.)
III. Missing Scenes
Tumblr media
(Slight spoilers for chapters 15-18)
We've all got our fave scenes from the main story. It's inevitable. So not seeing a lot of them animated is sad, not just bc we like them but bc they expand the bond she has with each guy!
I would've loved to see Gavin's ferris wheel scene (Chapter 15), MC reuniting with Kiro through Helios, only for him to erase her memory (Chapter 17), Lucien's sexually tense press conference (Chapter 16), all the angsty scenes with Victor from Chapter 18, etc.
Heck, some dates could have been good to add too, especially some of Lucien's (Midnight Date, Crisis Date, etc. that foreshadow the Ares reveal)
And again, you can't have everything animated, but to completely cut out everything from these chapters?
IV. The Ending
Tumblr media
Obviously MAPPA had to wrap things up quickly, but what the fuck was that ending? Not only did it feel kinda anticlimactic, but seeing MC turn into Sailor Moon and defeat Hades was pretty....weird, to say the least. I liked that it was her bonds with everyone that unlocked the power, but I thought the overall conclusion was pretty meh.
(Spoilers for Chapter 18)
They could've used the ending where MC decides to sacrifice herself to save humanity. Sure, it would've been sad, but it would've been such a way to go out, especially if she wakes up in the Eternal Winter world. They were hinting at a season 2 (that'll probably never come) anyway, so why not do it like this?
To be fair, I guess that would be unsatisfying to anime-onlys but bloody hell, I just wanted something stronger
V. The Black Queen
Tumblr media
She was teased in the opening every damn episode, only to briefly appear in the last one. Well, parts of her anyway. Why include her at all if she's barely going to be incorporated? I was hyping her up to my friend the entire show, only for her to just. not really do anything.
In conclusion
I think adding a few more episodes would've made a huge difference in terms of story, pace, characterizations, etc. The ending felt way too rushed, the "bonds" felt somewhat flat, a bunch of scenes were missing even though they showed up in the trailer......like, I'm overjoyed that it got animated at all, but dammit I just wanted more bc I love this game
So what are your thoughts on the anime?

I’ve been wanting to share my thoughts on this for a while, and maybe I did already but I just forgot, but it’s about Jujutsu Kaisen.
I love JJK, and obviously many others do too. I haven’t read all of the Shibuya arc, but based on everything I’ve seen I do think it is incredibly interesting the way the series is delving into such dark themes and making it’s protagonist battle the idea that the world would be better off if he just didn’t exist anymore. I think a lot of Shounen anime have moved towards these themes recently, but JJK is the most prominent one to pull it off successfully. Anyway-
I understand where people are coming from where they call it the next big shounen or the best new shounen manga in recent years. It’s a newcomer that’s filled the space of Demon Slayer and probably will fill the space of BNHA when it ends. However, a Youtuber I watch (Mother’s Basement) made a 40 minute video the other day calling it “peak shounen anime” and I haven’t been able to watch it yet because-
I’ve just felt so frustrated with my feelings on the series since I think it had a very shaky set up? The first episode (and what I assume is the pilot chapter of the manga) is incredible. It establishes the relationship between Fushiguro and Itadori, and that becomes the main stake in the rest of the series. You would probably think my complaint then comes in the two of them being separated a few episodes later when Itadori “dies”, but that’s not it either. While I do think it disrupted a bit of what was the drive of the series and got people invested in it, overall the way the author handled the grief of Fushiguro and Nobara and had the stories progress in separate locations was well done. However, I think all the worldbuilding in between all of that sort of made the series drop for me.
I know this is common when series go from a pilot chapter to weekly, but when the schools were introduced in JJK, I felt like we were dealing with an Owari no Seraph situation. The author didn’t seem to know what to do with the school, like they attended it, but there aren’t any classes, they just seem to go on field trips all the time, but there isn’t an explanation for that, we just sort of assume that’s all they do. It was set at a school just because... that’s what you do in shounen anime to relate to the demographic. And then the second point in the series that made my opinion of it drop even more was when the Kyoto students were introduced. While I do think they are entertaining, the episode (and maybe this is just MAPPA’s directing fault since I’m using the anime as an example) where Fushiguro and Todo interact bored me to death. There was no emotional weight, it was just a random new goofy character to fight with. At that point I was begging for Itadori to get back in the picture, but we were only around half way through the first cour at that point, and Itadori didn’t come back until around episode 13. Basically, I just felt like, outside of the relationships between the main trio, the series struggled to introduce new characters and the concept of it’s world at first, which gave me a very bad impression of the series.
But, then again, the reason I’m so torn about bringing this up is I can’t seem to decide on whether or not this bad set up should be viewed as a detriment to the rest of the series. Once things got going, they certainly do improve, and while I really still don’t care much for the side characters, again I’m not sure if that should dock so many points from my opinion of the series. Right now, I just seem to be stuck in this idea whenever I hear someone call it the best series of going like, “but the beginning was so bad though?” Maybe someone can help me balance my thoughts out.

Why we should respect and be grateful :
None of us should slander Mappa after this episode and here is my opinion why...
Today's episode is the beginning for a new arc, what happened after all these years on Paradis, it is a really important episode.
It is also Eren's titan first apparition which, even if I expected an immaculate work like WIT did, it was not as perfect than I expected but still a very good work.
My first point being MAPPA's "style" somehow fits better the new turn the manga is getting to, it's not longer naked titans running dumb and blades going through, no longer the world we were used to so for me, MAPPA is a great deal to make and give us the ambiance the manga first gave us last year. Goosebumps? Check ✅
Many people were troubled by CGI effects... Well like WIT used them too you know? On horses they did ! MAPPA clearly not used more CGI than WIT. They just did on different situations, it's troubling people because that's used on actual characters? We barely see those CGI and I think they fit, not immaculate but they do fit and if it's troubling you, maybe you're looking too much into it. There is like 5% CGI in a whole episode.
People hating on the studio seem to forget how strong was MAPPA's first entrance with the premiere, Marh's warriors during war animation? The hype was real! And I really thought "I love WIT studios, but I don't think they would've pulled this off..." the way MAPPA did it was, no overreacting, perfect.
Clearly CGI is making everyone boil when the rest of the episode was insanely good!! And it saddens me to see some self-acclaimed "experts" who think they're better because they read the manga are even DOING A FUCKING PETITION THE RE-DO THE ANIME? These people and those who signed are shameful and will see karma struck, I swear...
Now I'm getting to the critical point...
WIT really shitted themselves knowing what was coming this season and said it with all honesty and courage "We can't do it".
Imagine refusing exclusivity to do the animation of one of the biggest animes of all time? I mean they could've said yes and mess it up but they didn't, they choose to let it go.
They really went through dark moments during seasons 3.
We watch episodes of 20 minutes? For them it is months, MONTHS of hard work and look how dope it was, they really pushed their limits, but considering what season 4 was about, it was too much... WIT made the legends grow but they knew how important it was and decided to step back for one who will honor this final season...
MAPPA took it and is now carrying on the shoulders the weight of finishing this masterpiece that lot whole community has loved since 2013. Pressure much?
As I said, what MAPPA did as a premiere was a masterpiece of work. They have a different style but you can't see that it is very accurate to the manga. Same soundtrack than WIT Studio. Honestly I don't know what to ask for more than them?
They honored every point, promises and somehow pre-coded settles by their predecessors and they are still doing it in a new refreshing epic way, I have to respect.
If MAPPA had said no to this, we wouldn't even have a season 4 to watch, let that sink in...
It would've ended where it did and broke all of us, but MAPPA took the shot. We own them for this. Remember ✨
This lastest episode is far from bad, it is very very good and I'm very VERY excited, if not screaming till next week.
I hope I made a point here and made you at least think about it.
Look beyond, gather all these episodes they gave us and list all good and wrong, you'll see that the good things are ten times bigger than the bad ones.
It's worth it.
Respect for MAPPA

2020 Anime Retrospective
With the end of the year here, and all the anime that came with it now behind us, I feel like looking back and reminiscing on it. So, following the style of ANN's own yearly retrospectives, may I present my 2020 anime in review! Enjoy.
Tumblr media
Best of the year: Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken
This is actually not the first time Yuasa and his crew of, let's be honest, visionaries have rolled something special out right at the beginning of the year in some weird power move against everything else that has to follow it. They did it back in 2018 with Devilman Crybaby, and then they hit us this year with Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken.     You ever have one of those shows where you're just constantly in awe of everything it does? Where you never found yourself chasing merch or hunting after content based off it online, but you consistently find yourself thinking about it? Yeah, that's what Eizouken did to my brain after I watched it. It was such an earnest love letter to anime and anime production, to animation in general, that I couldn't help but get sucked into its imagination and enthusiasm. The way it was able to so perfectly illustrate that pure, boundless, childlike joy that one can derive from the simple act of creating, I'd be lying if I didn't say that it had a powerful effect on my own desire to continue creating. (Corny as that sounds, it's true.) The sheer amount of love it contains, and the equal amount it puts out into the world make it so I know I am going to be thinking about it again and again for a long long time.
Tumblr media
Runner-up: Akudama Drive
I don't know if it's really quite a matter of my two favorites being opposites, but there are definitely some pretty sharp stylistic and tonal differences between my two top shows this year. Akudama Drive's cocaine-fueled bender of an intro episode made it very clear what it's intentions were and what it wanted us to be prepared for. That doesn't mean I had ANY idea of where it was headed narratively, but I did know I was in for one hell of a ride. And it delivered is spades on that promise.     The twists and turns, no matter how insane, illogical, or steeped in tropes they were, were all such a colorful energetic spectacle that it would be hard to hold anything against the series. Every character was such a force that I didn't really consider any of them a weak point. Yeah, some of them were more or less cardboard cut-outs of antagonistic elements, but when the cardboard cutout looks REALLY FREAKING COOL, it's hard to get too torn up over the details. It's a show that oozes style and knew EXACTLY what it wanted to do and be, and I have to respect that.
Tumblr media
Runner-up-up: Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun
The next few entries aren't really in any sort of order, I actually found it near impossible to sort anything below my top two. Hanako-kun however does hold a bit of a special place for me though because, at least from a stylistic standpoint, it hits so many of my buttons. Just visually this show is the exact kind of thing my younger self would have latched onto immediately, even before knowing anything about the actual content. I suppose not much has really changed though.     I'm absolutely in love with the animation style of Hanako-kun, and I got really lucky that there is an interesting story and delightful cast of characters underneath that visual splendor. Along with the sharp lines, intense colors, and soft characters, I'm also a sucker for contemporary supernatural mysteries. That's a fancy way of saying one of my favorite shows as a kid was The X-files, but both make the point pretty well. The world of Hanako-kun has a lot to offer, and I can only hope it gets a second season so we can continue to delve into it's beautiful and terrifying mysteries.
Tumblr media
Runner-up-up: Kaguya-sama: Love is War Season 2
I know a lot of people will be talking about this one when it comes to “Best of” lists. I know a lot of people were talking about the first season when it reminded us just how funny anime can be back in 2018. Absurd high school comedies (Is that a genre?) could definitely be considered my favorite. Hell, of my top five favorite anime of all time, THREE of them fall under that category. So believe me when I say Kaguya-sama absolutely deserves the deluge of praise it receives. For what describing something as “laugh out loud” is worth, this show had me constantly needing to pause it just so I could finish laughing at whatever ludicrously funny misfortune had just befallen it's cast of lovable morons.     The thing is though, Kaguya-sama understands that you can't just earn love and goodwill on laughs alone, there needs to be a beating heart at the center of all the shenanigans. And when this season had me actually cheering on and feeling sorry for Ishigami of all people, I knew that beating heart was present and accounted for. Look, the cast are all self-centered idiots, but I'll be damned if they aren't also my dear children who I delight in watching slowly grow and become slightly less self-centered idiots.
Tumblr media
Runner-up-up: Dorohedoro
When the Dorohedoro anime was first announced, a lot of my experience was watching a group of people online scream about how they were so pumped that it was finally getting an anime. I had never heard of it before, but the excitement was very real and tangible. And I gotta say, sometimes you need to believe the hype.     I've never been one to shirk a series just because it was CG animation, (Watch ID-0 dammit!) but Dorohedoro makes a strong case for why people shouldn't sleep on something based solely on it's animation. The dirty, grease-encrusted world of Hole is brought to life with plenty of flair and style that, I feel, the CG didn't hold back at all. What I had seen said was that for a long time Dorohedoro was kinda considered “unanimateable” but I think MAPPA did the iconic manga a fair amount of justice. Even if pulpy ultra-violence isn't normally your thing, I still highly recommend giving Dorohedoro a look, it might just end up being a hole worth going down.
Tumblr media
Honorable Mention: Show By Rock!! Mashumairesh!!
I know what you're thinking, but hear me out. The first Show By Rock!! was definitely an indulgence for me. While not something I considered a high level series by any stretch: messy plotting, shallow characters, a weird isekai angle, a lackluster finale, and an even MORE lackluster second season, it still got is hooks into me with its sheer energy and fluffy charm. So despite the, as mentioned, rough second season, I was more than happy to check out the new series in the franchise. And boy was I glad I did.     Mashumairesh!! takes all the heart and sweetness that worked for the first series and dials it up. It then took a hard look at a lot of what DIDN'T work in the first series, and manages to fix most of the issues. Removing the isekai angle and the whole existential threat thing, and just letting the series be a “slice-of-life but in an electric animal filled music world” did wonders for the direction and consistency. Add to that more properly fleshed out characters, and you get a series that is far stronger than it's progenitor.     The next series, Show By Rock!! Stars!!, will be adding back the cast from the first series, and that could very well be a sign that it will be falling back into its old habits, but the presence of the Mahumairesh!! girls gives me hope that it might have a chance of staying the new, far better course.
Tumblr media
Worst of the Year: Digimon Adventure:
This one really hurts to say. What hurt more was how quickly I knew what show I'd be electing for this position. One thing to clarify is that I would not nominate a series that I'd only watched one or two episodes of, that's just not fair. So the award was bound to go to something I had at least dedicated a decent amount of my time too. And in any other year this may have gone to something that was more my “least favorite” or had an ending that disappointed me. But unfortunately I have to be honest and sit here and tell you that the newest entry in the Digimon franchise was easily the worst thing I watched this year.      I have been a long time Digimon fan. Ever since I was but a wee lass watching the original Digimon Adventure premiere on Fox Kids at a family reunion, I have always considered the franchise a sort of cornerstone of my anime fandom. So please understand the excitement I had felt when I found out they were doing a full on remake of that flagship series. Imagine how absolutely pumped I was when the bombastic movie-like premiere of Digimon Adventure: wowed us with everything it delivered, and all the promises of what was to come. And then imagine my disappointment, my despair as the show devolved until it showed us what it really was during the finale of the Fake Tokyo arc.     I would call it a production meltdown, but considering the precedent that got set back in episode 10 during the already shaky Ultimate Evolution arc, has been so clearly informing everything up to the current episodes in the early 30s, I have to be honest with myself and admit: this is what we were going to get all along from day one.     All of the heart that had made the original series so endearing, despite its own flaws, just isn't present here. What you get here is just a non-stop (and I mean non-stop) string of barely related fights with poorly-defined stakes, or sometimes no real stakes at all. It's just one ugly set piece fight after another as the children chase after vaguely implied evils. I think the most damning thing is how much more I could say about just how much this series has let me down. Like I said, this one hurts.
Tumblr media
Best Theme-Song of the Year: Night Running (BNA)
My opinion of BNA as a series is complex. But my opinion of its ED, Night Running, is simple: Its a god-damned bop! I could spend this whole section talking about the artistry of the ED animation itself, its fun and creative use of color, the slight variations for certain episodes, the focus on character, or the fact that it was done by an American animation team. I could even talk about the song's importance to the series as a whole and its place in the narrative. I won't though. The fact of the matter is that even without all that, I STILL probably would've picked Night Running as my best of the year because as a song it is just that much my jam. This is the kind of shit I could listen to on repeat for hours, days, weeks, and still keep coming back to it. Don't get me wrong, Ready To is a damn powerful and catchy tune that goes hard, but at the end of the day, I'm a sucker for a soulful pop tune like Night Running. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWTFfEnMCCc
Tumblr media
Best Character: Sayaka Kanamori
This was actually probably the hardest category for me to decide on. It was stuck hard between Eizoken's Kanamori and Akudama Drive's Doctor. I know those are a powerfully different pair in basically every way, but it was specifically for their startling differences that both characters stuck out to me so much. In the end though, it was the poignant rounding out of, and emotional hooks of Kanamori's character that let her triumph over her delightfully two-dimensional opposition.     Kanamori already had me from episode one. In a show that I wasn't really worried about the usual diversions of anime ingestion like picking a favorite character, Kanamori sealed herself as “Best-girl” from the word go. I have mad respect for a girl who knows what she wants, and has a clear idea of how she's going to go about getting it (See also: Doctor.) But Kanamori was more than a driving desire for success and money. Underneath her unstoppable ambition there was a very real, very relatable driving impetus. She stood apart, and yet still believably vulnerable and invested in the people she associated with. It was always a blast watching her suffer as the only thing keeping the more creative minds on track, and yet she was never reduced to a simple task master; her love and respect for her friends was always clearly visible. I could go on and on about how Kanamori is a nearly perfect character, but I hope I've said enough already without having to resort to senseless rambling.
Tumblr media
Best Moment: Howan confesses her feeling to Himeko (Show By Rock!! Mashumairesh!!)
By the time episode six rolled around, Mashumairesh!! had already shown marked improvements over its progenitor in basically every area. Not only was the story in a better place by focusing on what had worked in the original series, (Ya know the BAND part of this show about bands) but the cast was also doing a good job of standing out from their seniors and feeling more equally rounded out. Where the original series had just kinda been the Cyan show with guest stars, I felt like I had an actual grip on all four of the main girls now.     There were however the usual issues that come with a cute-girls-doing-cute-things series, chief among them the “ambiguously gay member of the group who constantly reacts with clear romantic interest towards the main protagonist but the writing will never actually do anything with those feelings” trope. Retoree had spent the better part of the first two seasons fawning over Cyan only for nothing to come of it and, despite the increased focus on all of the girls this time around, it looked like we were going to get the same old song and dance with Himeko's feelings towards Howan.     But then the climax of episode six hit and, midst a really intense subplot about Himeko's abandonment complex, Howan comes out with a straight up love confession. And I kept waiting for the usual dead-ends these moments always seem to have. The “I love you! I love the girls too! I love the band!” Or a “I love being with you.” and the dreaded, “I love having you as my most precious friend.” But none of that happened. It was a full on heart-felt, “I love you, Himeko. I want to stay with you forever!” I'm just not used to getting that sort of straightforwardness from my silly little band shows, so I was shocked, but also completely overjoyed. And frankly the series just kept getting better from there.     The evolution of their relationship built off that moment, no dreaded resetting of the status quo. I daresay it was on the power of this moment alone that I wanted to include this series in my top five at all. If there was anything I would want other anime to take from Mashumairesh!! it's that it's okay to introduce radical changes to character relationships partway through a season, and it's okay to let characters unequivocally state their feelings for each other. People will respond positively to that earnestness, I promise.

The Final Season - Episode 1 Thoughts
I've watched the first episode around 3 times on my own and over a dozen times from anime-only live reactions on YouTube. Those are always something to have a field day with every season, and are part of the whole enjoyment post-watching the episode on your own.
Obviously I'm only reviewing this based on the first episode, so it's way too early to judge The Final Season as a whole. However, I will say that my strategy to keep my expectations low definitely worked. I was very hyped, don't get me wrong, but after Season 3 Part 2, I realized that production and scheduling has never been this show's strong suite and things behind the scenes were always chaotic. And it was my mistake to realize it this late and have unrealistically high expectations of the manga's adaptation.
But enough about that. I'm just gonna say it right now. I absolutely loved this episode and was completely blown away by it. It was a rollercoaster ride from start to finish and boy, the staff wasn't kidding when they said the first episode was like a movie. It definitely felt like that, and it went by in a flash. Now, on to the individual points.
Story/Adaptation
Flawless. Everything was executed perfectly and went beyond my expectations. The thing that stood out to me the most was how many things were changed from the PV in terms of scene construction, camera angles, and overall storyboards. There was only one shot that we reused from the PV, namely the one with Zeke and Reiner inside the airship where they're referred to as the spear and shield. Everything else was redone, which was a huge surprise. Wit was always very faithful to the original manga panels with how they used them as a big reference for most of their cuts, but this one changes them up a lot. Personally, I am 100% fine with it and as someone who has read these chapters in the manga dozens of times over the past few years, seeing them like this was a pleasant and very welcome surprise.
The anime-only additions here are notable and also quite welcome. Falco's line in the beginning in particular stood out the most in the long-run, but the addition of the Eldians' terror being shown as well as the scene before the ED was very welcome. I would like to assume that this was Isayama's doing as whenever the anime usually adds/changes up things, it's his request to do so. He sort of considers the anime to be the "definitive" version of the story that he, for one reason or another, couldn't do in the manga himself when that particular chapter came out. Season 3 Part 1 (The Uprising Arc) is a prime example for this. Once again, I'm very content with what was done here and I trust MAPPA will do the story justice.
A small but very neat thing is the fact that we got to keep the title cards and the info eyecatches mid-episode. Really added to the whole sense of consistency.
Animation
When the initial trailer came out, many people were concerned about Shigeki Asakawa (Director of Photography)'s odd and excessive usage of blur filters on top of the scenes and were wondering if they would remain in the final product, given her track record with other shows like The God of Highschool. Luckily, that is not the case here as the scenes look very clean and the minimal blur on top adds a bit to the muddy/gritty atmosphere of what's going on. Personally, I don't mind it at all and I barely notice it anyway. MAPPA's biggest strength to me is the usage of effects like blood and explosions. You feel the impact of everything and with such an action-packed episode, it made everything so much better.
The usage of 3D CGI for the Titan Shifters has been the biggest controversy surrounding this first episode. When I first watched it, it didn't bother me at all. Personally I care more about a model fitting in the action sequence rather than how it looks for the most part. Right now I would say I'm neutral. It's not the greatest CG ever conceived in anime but it definitely does not look out of place and is pretty decent. For the Jaw Titan, I couldn't tell what was CG and what wasn't for the most part. For the other Titans it's more obvious, but it's not too jarring. Obviously, if it was up to me and the production committee/NHK didn't push their scheduling shenanigans onto MAPPA, I would have gotten every Titan in 2D, but you can't have everything. If they choose to focus on more important scenes later on and cut corners in this first episode as a result, that's understandable. I can live with it. And again, even then, it's not that bad in my eyes.
Now, the character designs are just absolutely stellar. In multiple interviews, it’s been stated that they wanted to stay true to Kyoji Asano’s designs at Wit while also being consistent with Isayama’s style in the manga. And boy did they absolutely nail it. It’s exactly what as they said. Tomohiro Kishi could not have done a better job with the characters we’ve seen so far and I am beyond impressed with his work. I look forward to seeing the rest of the characters in this arc.
Sound
I've been following Kohta Yamamoto's works for a few years now, ever since he started working with Sawano (and being mentored by him to an extent) in early 2017. Although he's been involved with AoT before, particularly with the character songs in Season 2, whenever those two would collaborate on a project it would usually be because Sawano is too busy to compose a full soundtrack. So what usually happens is, Sawano does one track and variations of it (think ShingekiNoKyojin, ThanksAT and T-KT), and nothing else. Meanwhile, Yamamoto handles the rest of the music for the show. On top of that, Yamamoto's style as a composer is different from Sawano's as he comes from a rock/guitarist background as opposed to Sawano, who is a pianist and is classically trained. My biggest concern for The Final Season was that we would get a similar case as with the other shows where Sawano doesn't put in too much effort, while Yamamoto essentially becomes the main composer. Although it looks like this is in fact the case after this first episode, let me explain why I don't think it's a bad thing.
After the premiere of the first episode, both Sawano and Yamamoto tweeted that it was in fact Yamamoto who is handling the majority of the Marley Arc's music. And after this first episode, I have to say I'm impressed. His initial track that he made for the PV was a bit off-putting to me because it sounded like every epic blockbuster Hollywood trailer background track ever, but after the way it was used in this episode alongside a few other tracks, I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. It fits what's going on, and overall delivers a fresh sound to the show that is very appropriate given the massive change in narrative. Back during S3 Part 1, Sawano stated in an interview that he was already burned out and had trouble coming up with new music for AoT given how many tracks he had already composed for it. Given how few new melodies were in S3 Part 2;s music, I think this should be clear. Especially now that we're going into yet another season. To summarize, I think Yamamoto's work here is a result of three conditions that just happened to line up perfectly. The change in narrative, which the new composer style reflects. Sawano being busy. And Sawano being burned out with AoT. Now personally I still believe we're going to get at least one new original Sawano track with variations of it for the big climax moments this arc, and he may compose more music for the 2nd half of this 16-episode season, since that's technically a new arc. But we'll see. As a whole though, I'm satisfied with what I've heard from Kohta Yamamoto in this first episode.
The last point to make in regards to the sound is Masafumi Mima who, apart from Sawano, the voice cast, and some freelancers, is the only one from the previous seasons' staff members to return here. And once again, his work here is absolutely phenomenal. The mixing and usage of sound effects in this episode was stellar and truly felt like I was watching a war movie. It enhanced the action tenfold and I could not want it any better. Music usage is something that goes through the director (Yuichiro Hayashi), but ultimately the sound director is the one who implements the track (instrument layering/stem editing) and does the mixing. The usage of Kohta Yamamoto's music here was very well done, and although the track from the PV repeated quite a bit, it didn't get repetitive at all. Also, the sound director remaining consistent here means we got to keep things like the titan transformation sound effects, which may be a small thing but was very welcome and added to the whole consistency.
Opening/Ending
I'm gonna wait until Shinsei Kamattechan releases the full version of the opening in a single or album to fully judge the song, but boy do I love this opening. Although I'm not sure if the TV-size version is my favorite AoT opening yet, I have to say that it's without a doubt the most fitting OP this show has had until this point. It perfectly showcases the themes of war that this arc focuses on and has this lowkey disturbing eerie vibe with the dissonant chords and mixing of the vocals that feels just as "mysterious" and "tense" as the show itself. I love it so much, honestly. Now, Isayama was a fan of Shinsei Kamattechan prior to them doing the S2 ED, and was the one who got them on-board to do it. Although that song isn't really my thing it's also a perfect fit, which leads me to believe that Isayama himself most likely chose the band again, namely to do this OP. And it's fantastic. I love the song. The visuals also have a very distinct style with all the colors and white backgrounds and I love how it's more metaphorical and symbolic (I guess "abstract" as well?) rather than flat-out just spoiling everything like the last arc's OP did.
The ED by Yuko Ando is fantastic. The first time I listened to the full song on its own I couldn't stop getting chills. Love the production aspects of the song and it's just really nice altogether. The visuals are quite interesting especially towards the end and I also like them a lot. Not much else to say about the ED. It's amazing. Go listen to it.
Conclusion
As a whole, I kept my expectations extremely low prior to the premiere despite my hype. As a result of that, not only were they exceeded, I was absolutely blown away by this first episode in pretty much every way. It may still be too early to judge, but from what has been shown here so far, I am absolutely looking forward to see MAPPA adapt the rest of this amazing story, or about as far as they can get with 16 episodes.

Any time anyone brings up the extra nine pages I want to scream.
Seeing as the volume is getting released shortly in the US, I do not look forward to hearing about them again.
Though I do think it'll be interesting to see their juxtaposition to the High School AU. Because if it blends seamlessly, then I'm going to believe it's the movie they are watching. Which actually would make a lot of sense.
I'm not too worried about it either way. I also don't think they'll get animated because ending on the bird wrapping the scarf and flying away is far too perfect.
Unless they make it that the whole time they were watching a movie and do the extra nine pages, that could be very interesting.
But I trust MAPPA and it's whatever story Yams want to tell.
That's what we have fanfiction for!
Back in my day, I shipped some weird things and none of them were Canon. Very few were in fact.
And no one really cared.
Fandom was meant to be a fun, interesting expression. Canon really didn't matter and we bent things to our will.
I also did that in the rp community.
Now, there's too much focus on Canon.
Like who gives a shit if your ship is Canon or not? You're entire enjoyment of something should not hinge on a ship being Canon and you certainly shouldn't be sending hate or death threats.
But this seems to be the norm now and I don't like it.
Man, I sound like an old person.
"Back in my day, we had two websites for fanfics and you were lucky if anyone shipped what you shipped. Then we walked 15 miles to read the same fics over and over."/sarcasm
No, but seriously, stop obsessing over nine pages and fucking Canon.
As long as you're not being rude, ship whatever the fuck you want.

Dino Watches Anime (Nov 15)
BOI, I HAVE A MIDTERM ON TUESDAY AND TEST ON WEDNESDAY. SCREW THAT. I’M GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE ANIME I’VE BEEN WATCHING IN BETWEEN STUDY SESSIONS! Yeah, the studying is like 2% while the anime and games are like 98%... I’m working on that, okay? Anyway, I’m going to cover mostly seasonal stuff with some other stuff.
Let’s go over the seasonal stuff first. Summer had so few anime coming out whereas Autumn/Fall came in like, “OPEN THE FLOODGATES! LET’S GO!!!” I haven’t even gotten around to all the anime airing this season that I want to like Yuukoku no Moriarty, Majo no Tabitabi, and Adachi to Shimamura. I missed some last season too like Deca-Dance which I just didn’t want to commit to if it was only for the good animation.
Taisou Samurai (DROPPED)
I dropped it after two episodes. MAPPA has two major series this season, but they clearly gave more time and attention to the one that was actually going to make money here (which I’ll talk about later). This one seems like a passion project without the passion in it anymore. It’s like opening a bag of chips and finding out they went stale long before you even reached into the bag.
Taisou Samurai, at its core, has a premise that I found really promising. I happen to like watching gymnastics sometimes, and the idea of an athlete who doesn’t want to retire is interesting. They went wrong with the execution. I don’t know what they were trying to pull here, but with unlikeable characters and a terrible run at it, it’s like they weren’t playing with a full deck of cards here.
Also, if you don’t know what a gyaru is, one of the supporting characters will look like a racist caricature. Also, this bird has no other point than to try to make up for this show’s lack of usable humour by using Kappei Yamaguchi’s range and going, “Please, save this show. I beg you.”
Tumblr media
I didn’t even bother giving this show three episodes to drag me in because I just couldn’t see myself wasting another 20 minutes here. Maybe I’ll have a change of heart, but for now, I should be having better things to do.
Tumblr media
Munou na Nana (WOULDN’T RECOMMEND)
I know everyone has made this joke already, but this is really just My Hero Academia x Among Us. I feel like if there was some more... budget put into this anime, they could’ve made it a lot better. The manga had a lot more detail, so a lot of the gruesome scenes with zombies or killings, etc. were muted and toned down beyond belief. Not to mention, I guess watching it after I read the manga just made me feel stupid. This is such a junkie show that pulls tricks that everyone knows is coming. Nonetheless, I can’t find some big reason to say “do not watch this” because it’s still a very mediocre show. It has its good points, but its presentation devalues it, the voice acting is meh (especially since Yuuichi Nakamura is playing THREE overpowered main cast characters this season), and the jig is up after the first episode, so the twists are just to make you sympathize more with the imposter. I haven’t seen a show like this for a while though, so I guess you can watch it if you want something refreshing like that. I don’t think you’re supposed to like this cast of characters, so I won’t say anything against not liking this cast.
Tumblr media
Kamisama ni Natta Hi (CONDITIONALLY RECOMMEND)
Jun Maeda... the man who manages to incorporate baseball into every anime he does... seriously, every anime I’ve watched by him has it from Angel Beats to Charlotte to that unfinished Little Busters I just left on hold. Anyway, Kamisama is no exception. Jun Maeda has a reputation for building touching stories that start off strong then really lose their footing once he realizes that he’s not going to get 24 episodes and needs to squeeze all of those 16 episodes of story left into 4 episodes or so. It also doesn’t help that sometimes he goes off on useless storylines that pay no use to the story.
Hina is really funny sometimes (but can be annoying). Narukami is funny. Really, everyone has some valid point about them that makes the show better compared to the previous entries.
Seriously, some little kid comes up to you and goes, “The world is ending, I am God, and I’m going to stick by you.” Meanwhile, you’re just a simp that’s trying to get your childhood friend to fall for you.
Tumblr media
Honestly, I’m still having a blast watching this. As much as Maeda’s writing can really suffer from tonal shifts (mostly in the end), I still wanted to watch this anime simply because I always like his storytelling in the beginning, and the laughs it brings can sometimes still muddle out the bitter taste that’s left in your mouth when the series finishes. I can already feel this train going down a slide and off a cliff. I already paid for my ticket though, so I’m obligated to stay on this shootshow until the end.
Seriously, I do not like where some of these relationships are heading.
Tumblr media
Maoujou de Oyasumi (CONDITIONALLY RECOMMEND)
This anime is relatable. It can get stale fast for a lot of people, but every time I think I’m going to get sick of it, it pulls one of the same gags that makes me go, “This. This is why I’m sticking with this.” I’m not sure how much more there is to say. It’s just an abducted princess who couldn’t care less that she’s a hostage and instead, takes this newfound time to take some good ZZZs. What a life.
Oh yeah, this princess is also willing to commit murder, mutilation, theft, and assault to get the sleep she wants.
Tumblr media
Tonikaku Kawaii (CONDITIONALLY RECOMMEND)
I’m not dropping this show... even if it makes no sense. The premise is astoundingly stupid, but it pulled a Zombieland Saga on me. It sounded so stupid, but once I gave it one episode, I found myself being entertained and almost rooting for the characters and their relationships.
Imagine this: You are about to get into the high school of your dreams when you see the girl of your dreams cross your path. You want to ask her out so you jump over the barricade and get hit by a truck. You’re on the brink of death when you realize you can’t die there without confessing your love. You chase her down with blood coming out of your head and confess. She says that she’ll only go out with you if you marry her. You then... somehow survive, drop out of school, then get a job to search for her. I kid you not. This is the setup. It’s as stupid as it sounds, and the anime knows this. It doesn’t try to fool you into thinking that this series is supposed to be anything but some highway fast-track way to convince you into watching a married couple. I think what irked me the most is that the character designs didn’t change from when they were in middle school to when they were adults. It wasn’t the being hit by a truck and not being sent to another world, it wasn’t this girl who stopped the truck without ruining her hair, it wasn’t anything else but their character designs staying the same.
Anyway, this anime is cute as long as you can jump some hurdles. It’s basically puppy-love marriage with anime stupidity through and through. I don’t know what about this series people, including myself, find charming.
Tumblr media
Jujutsu Kaisen (RECOMMENDED - BUT DON’T COMPARE TO DEMON SLAYER TOO MUCH!)
It’s Shonen Jump. “Will it be the next Kimetsu no Yaiba? The next big Shonen Jump series? One of the next big three? Five?” No, I don’t think so. I’m not enjoying this nearly as much as I did binging KNY. The cast isn’t nearly as likeable, but I’m still having a good time. It’s not all that fair to make that comparison anyway. The cast for Jujutsu Kaisen is passable. I like some of the main cast, but I feel like they lack the same kind of depth with its main heroine. I know she gets more stuff done in the future chapters, but her backstory so far is, “I had a friend once... No, she’s not dead. She just left our small town.”
The fight scenes are actually so much fun to watch. MAPPA gave this series a lot more time and budget than say that first anime I mentioned. It’s fluid, the camerawork is amazing, the choreography is on-point.
Tumblr media
The voice acting for this anime is spectacular among the main cast... when character dialogue allows it.
I feel a bit of imbalance, but Yuuji does offer a good protagonist template. Junya Enoki makes his lines so funny and gives this nonchalant approach that is the polar opposite of his performance in Tonikawa. This is definitely his season.
Junichi Suwabe voicing the main demon thing is amazing too. It fits so well, and he sounds so cool and evil. It’s great.
Tumblr media
Gojou is also one badass mentor played by Yuuichi Nakamura. Overpowered, part of the main cast, etc. Insert your reverse Kakashi joke here. Just give him more Sharingan genjutsu, I dare you.
Yuuma Uchida is back playing another tragic character that’s serious and uptight. I can’t say much more about him.
The opening and ending are both worth listening to even if you don’t want to watch the anime. Lost in Paradise by ALI has been on repeat for me.
Tumblr media
Besides that, I’m going to go over some other anime that I’ve been watching.
Hunter x Hunter (AS IF THIS HASN’T BEEN RECOMMENDED ENOUGH)
Slowly. Slowly but surely. 11/148.
I know this is going to be amazing... I just want to be in the right mood to full savour it. I don’t want to be consumed by stress and not pay attention. The reason why I like a lot of those seasonal anime is because I don’t pay the same kind of attention.
If you told me these characters’ ages, I probably would’ve believed everyone... except Leorio. The guy looks like a middle-aged money-hungry gangster.
What I would give to have the energy and serotonin of a Shonen Jump protagonist.
Tumblr media
Haikyuu (YEAH, IT’S GOOD)
I’m watching this one with my mom and sister as they go “OMG OMG OMG” as we watch while I’m sitting there like -_-
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good show, but sports anime are made like shounen battle anime (because they are in a way) with different stakes. I’ve felt more “nervous” about some of the Haikyuu matches than I did with some of the Hunter Exam. Worst case scenario in Haikyuu, you lose the match. Worst case scenario in Hunter x Hunter? You die.
I knew what I was going to get into when I was watching Haikyuu, and it’s given me what I remembered (since I did watch 10 episodes of it a few years ago) and expected.
Tumblr media
SKET Dance (HIGHLY RECOMMEND)
Unfollow me. Unfollow me right now. This is what I’m going to be talking about for the next month. I can feel it. I’ve had this show for like 3 days and watched around 33 episodes along with some of these other titles. I have a problem. I know that, but I don’t feel like fixing it. This show is just too good.
I get why people call this a poor man’s Gintama, but it’s not quite that. I can get the similarities, but it’s like eating an empanada and saying that it’s just like that dumpling you tasted last week. It looks alike on the surface... if you’re not that great at... telling the difference between things... but once you get to the meat of it (PUN HAHA), you realize that they are completely different, and you were a fool for thinking otherwise.
That’s our main heroine! Go go go!
Tumblr media
Dude, episode 25 hit me out of nowhere, AND I READ THE SPOILERS! I won’t say any more than that.
The cast is one of the best that I’ve seen in a while. Their chemistry is basically the entire show. Without one of the main three, you wouldn’t have the show anymore. It handles its female characters better than some of its fellow competitors at the time, and it may have what some may call a “token fat character”, but the character never makes fun of her for being fat. They make fun of her for saying “Yabasu” every single sentence. It hurts that the manga ended with some loose ends, and this anime isn’t getting a season 2.
Tumblr media
But at its weird and mushy core, this show is about three people with heavy and complex pasts who simply want to help people work out their issues in their own... unique ways.
I don’t want to say much else, but I wish more people would watch/read it and create/post most content for it even if it’s a bit old because it deserves it. I’m almost a decade late, and this anime still holds up.
Tumblr media
I gave Mairimashita Iruma-kun its own post.

So much to watch, not enough time in the week - What does Fall 2020 look like?
A list of what looks interesting in the next season and silly reasons as to why
Tumblr media
I’m not the sort of person who likes finding out too many (in some cases even a smidgen of) details about anime I’m going to watch, so this will be a spoiler free preview of the season. Here is a list of anime I will try and you can expect to hear about on Kagemajaya.
Click on the show names to be taken to their MAL pages for more detail.
Hype
Taisou Zamurai
A male cast gymnastics anime from MAPPA (the studio of Yuri!!! on Ice.) Enough said.
Watch the trailer here.
Tumblr media
Chuan Shu Zijiu Zhinan
This one’s a bit of a cheat as we’ve already seen 2 episodes of it (3 for those who have VIP accounts on weTV.) However, I was indeed hype for it before it started. Based on a BL novel by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, the author of Mo Dao Zu Shi, this one promises a lot to people who enjoy transmigration, cultivation and a bit of gay. It is also a quite funny isekai parody. The only downside is that it doesn’t share the same visual quality as MDZS, and is entirely 3D. It’s a good thing I’m not much of a stickler for hot visuals.
Watch it here on its official stream.
Tumblr media
Tian Guan Ci Fu
Another donghua based on a BL novel, well-known among the danmei fans also by its English name of Heaven Official’s Blessing. Also written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (boy, are they busy.) And a big plus: it’s not 3D, so really looking forward to watching handsome men cultivate together in pseudo-historic China. Beautiful setting, beautiful boys. Now one can only hope for an interesting plot too and we are set.
Watch the trailer here.
Cautiously Expectant
Tumblr media
Yuukoku no Moriarty
I saw manga adverts for this one all around Akihabara and Ikebukuro last year when I went on a little trip to Japan. The bishie Professor Moriarty was an immediate pull, and as a Holmes fan, I feel attracted to most of its adaptations, despite almost always being let down. The one thing that makes me cautious about this one is that it is published by a shounen magazine that is not GFantasy, so I’m not sure if the bishie designs and the male cast actually mean what I want it to mean. Fingers crossed.
Watch the trailer here.
Giving It a Shot
Inu to Neko Docchi mo Katteru to Mainichi Tanoshii
A cute looking comedy short about a dog and a cat.
Tumblr media
Jujutsu Kaisen
A mostly male cast Shounen Jump affair. Spring 2020’s Kakushigoto also implied that it has a fujoshi fanbase - let’s see what that’s all about.
Maesetsu!
A female cast gag comedy sol created by Lucky Star’s Yoshimizu Kagami. I watched Lucky Star fairly recently and found it quite entertaining with many sweet/funny characters. I suppose we will see if Yoshimizu still has it. Fingers crossed.
Adachi to Shimamura
I try to watch all queer anime as they come, and this comes in from the shoujo ai quota. Looks like a pretty straightforward romance. Hopefully it will have heart.
Kaeru no Pickles: Kimochi no Iro
All I know about this one is that it has a chill looking poster and has a slice of life tag on MAL. I’m not entirely sure whether we’ll get this subbed, but if we do, I’ll give it a shot.
Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko
Fell for the slice of life tag once again. This one is an isekai with a soft looking MC. Not entirely sure it’ll be up my alley, but no harm in trying it, maybe for a pleasant surprise.
Sore dake ga Neck
This one seems to have the cool setting of a convenience store. I did initially think this was going to be a sol as well, but seems like that might not be the case. Either way, cool setting.
Hypnosis Mic: Division Rap Battle - Rhyme Anima
Another anime whose source project I saw plastered all around Tokyo. I’m not a huge fan of idol shows but the rapping bit makes me a bit curious.
Noblesse
A manhwa massively popular among female fans which has also received one off adaptations before, it’s finally getting its turn for a full cour among the hype the industry seems to have for Korean webtoons these days (Kami no Tou, God of High School, etc.) I did watch one of the OVA’s years ago, and wasn’t entirely impressed but then again I can’t judge a whole work based on one arc adapted into a single episode. Male cast action stuff. We shall see and judge.
Magatsu Wahrheit: Zuerst
This was chosen entirely on my shallow criteria as usual: visuals with two dudes on them. Now we’ll see whether the German name is a cringe factor or it’s actually interesting.

Osomatsu-san 3rd Season
Osomatsu-san has been a consistently high quality production for me since the beginning. The humor is definitely my cup of tea, though as with any episodic gag comedy, some sketches do miss. It is more often than not a hit. The seiyuu cast is a huge huge pull, as this is not them only acting out an already written character but you can actually hear them having fun as the sextuplets. It is also one of the rarer shows where I, as a person who isn’t great at focusing on visuals, appreciate the impeccable quality of animation. So hype for another season of this majorly fun series and to welcome Matsuno’s back home - coziness, here I come.
Quanzhi Gaoshou 2
I watched the first season of Quanzhi Gaoshou (or King’s Avatar) because it was made by the studio of MDZS, and it was the first time I had seen a good looking Chinese animation production. And it didn’t disappoint. Production quality was similar and more importantly, it had a very engaging plot - pro MMORPG players playing MMORPG,  their personal dramas and the actual (surprisingly fun for me) gameplay and action. Its most important quality is still its charming cast for me, a successful ensemble cast, where with the exception of the antagonists, everyone and their relationships are lovely. Mostly a male cast show, it does also have nice ladies. Looking forward to going back to them. My only personal issue (definitely not a flaw on the show’s part but my attention span) is that it has so many teams and characters that I forgot most of who was who. Fingers crossed it’ll be easy to get back into.
Haikyuu!!: To the Top 2nd Season
Haikyuu is back again, to finish off the “To the Top” arc. The first cour of this season was probably the season that took me out of the Haikyuu hypnosis state where I assumed everything that came out with the name attached to it was great. It was still enjoyable in its second half but I do feel like the magic has worn off now. I hope I’m wrong and the tournament hype will bring it back again. Haikyuu is at its best when it’s tense in-match and funny with character interactions, so fingers crossed for that.
Ani ni Tsukeru Kusuri wa Nai! 4
The Chinese comedy short is back! As mentioned a couple of paragraphs ago, gag comedies are always hit or miss with their sketches, and this one is also mostly a hit for me, though definitely not at the level of Osomatsu-san. The pull of this show is the cute boys and their dumbassery. Looking forward to its easy fun and more Kai Xin.
Also continuing...

Mo Dao Zu Shi Q, Great Pretender
Have been enjoying both these shows greatly so far. 2 more cours of MDZS Q to go with their cute chibi fun, and Great Pretender’s last case (9 eps) is already released on Japanese Netflix so now we wait for Laurent and the gang to reach us. Really looking forward to the emotional drama of Laurent and hopefully some proper addressal of his feelings for Edamame. Either way, it’ll look gorgeous and will be heaps of fun if the first three cases are anything to go by.
I might pick up other shows and most likely drop some of these throughout the season but here’s hoping it will be enjoyable overall despite the small number of shows I’ll start with. What are you guys planning to watch?
