Fancasting The Secret History

sharing my vision of who could play these classics students

i tried to be as realistic as possible, considering their book descriptions and casting actors close in age to each other and their characters. after seeing so many of the same names in these fancasts, i wanted to throw some new ones in the mix!

henry's a big guy, dark-haired, square-jawed, bespectacled — he basically looks like clark kent/superman. so my thought process went to henry cavill look-alike, jamie flatters (b. 2000). coincidentally, my old fancast was david corenswet, so i guess it all checks out. i only know jamie from avatar: the way of water, but based on his music videos, i think he's got the acting chops to capture henry's more unhinged side that he lets slip idk

to me, bunny is the most american out of the group because of his family background, it's even described as "an upbringing vitally present in Bunny in every respect, from the way he shook your hand to the way he told a joke." saw this rudy pankow (b. 1998) casting suggestion on mycast and it just made total sense to me. having watched him as jj maybank in outer banks, i know he can capture how obnoxious bunny can be, and he'll do well trying to annoy every character and pushing their buttons.

admittedly, this was a hard one because i originally had tom glynn-carney in mind but i wanted someone younger, so i didn't go too far and went with ty tennant (b. 2002) who's played the younger version of his characters twice now. i mean if you think about it, aegon ii targaryen and charles have a couple things in common: both are alcoholics and have an incestuous relationship with their sister 😭 since charles and camilla look androgynous and described as angels, i figured ty looks the part. i also believe in ty's acting skills to portray charles' complexity as the story goes on.

i thought of young actresses who resembled ty and went with thomasin mckenzie (b. 2000), who i loved in jojo rabbit and last night in soho. i know thomasin would look good as a blonde, but more importantly, she's got the face for period dramas. camilla is enigmatic, but i think richard just saw her as like an ingénue, so i figured thomasin can do that layered performance.

thought and long hard for who to cast as francis because i'm so tired of seeing the same redhead actors or some random redhead model 😭 thank goodness luther ford (b. 1999/2000) has been discovered. his portrayal in the crown sold me because it was very francis of him to just sit around drinking booze and smoking while dressed in modern princely clothing.

another inspired casting suggestion i saw on mycast — physically, i think dominic sessa (b. 2002) truly fits the bill; i like that he's not your conventionally good-looking guy too. acting-wise, he was incredible in the holdovers. and i believe he could put so much more personality to richard papen's character.

might make a part 2 for other characters like julian morrow and judy poovey :> thanks for checking this out and let me know if you see the vision!

p.s. it's never gonna happen but it'd be interesting to just see this set of actors get together because they seem like a bunch of introverts 😭 they might bond over taking film photos of each other though so that's cool

On Oct 31, 1517, Martin Luther’s 95 Theses sparked a wave of change, challenging authority and paving the way for freedom of belief and thought. Today, I celebrate the courage to question, reform, and pursue truth a legacy that echoes through history.

Martin Luther, the father of modern-day faith-based preaching, chose this day, October 31st, All Hallows Eve, a CHRISTIAN holiday when Christians prepared themselves to celebrate All Saints Day on November 1st, to proclaim that salvation only comes through faith in Christ.

Today is Reformation Day, the day some 500 years ago that dramatically impacted the Christian church. If you attend a non-Roman Catholic church that proclaims faith in Jesus for salvation, you can thank God for THIS Day.

I just finished the book (literally an hour ago) and i have many feelings and questions and a insatiable need to ramble, so buckle up if you want to

Maybe upon reading this post, you might think that some things are a bit dumb or that i could have worked out on my own. So let ME be the first to admit, that i AM a bit slow and that sometimes i become so invested in a story/book that i do not take a step back and analyse the characters, symbols, metaphors, reading in between the lines etc.

So without further ado:

Warning for The Secret History SPOILERS!!!!!

• Somewhere in the first half, its mentioned that Bunny takes medicine for asthma and that could be the reason for him putting in weight and being irritable, but Richard says that he later found that was for another reason. What was it? By the time this is mentioned i dont know if the farmer has already been killed or not

• What happened between Francis and Bunny? I read a theory that Francis may have tried something but i dont think that Bunny would still want to be friends after

• Why did Francis, Henry, Charles and Camilla put up with Bunny? He doesn't seem like a good friend, uses them for their money, doesn't seem interested that much in greek or classics (actually i got the feeling only henry and richard were more interested)

• In the beggining, Richard sees Henry and Julian talking. And Henry kisses him. And the stuff they were talking. What was that about? Was Henry just Julian's favorite or was something else there?

• In the second half, it has this whole drama and tension between Charles and Henry. I get why Charles is pissed. I don't get why Henry is tho. That scene which Camilla tells about this meeting with a lawyer, Henry is furious with Charles but I dont get his reasons. Was it just because Charles wasn't accepting his manipulation anymore?

• Kinda off topic but has anyone suggested Luther Ford as a fancast for Francis? He's the only one i could picture in my head

Kinda off topic part 2, i read the book in brazilian portuguese and the translation was... well, it could be better. Has anyone else thought so too?

Also, this is the second Donna Tartt book ive read (first was the goldfinch) and i still cant put into words how these books made me feel. The characters are insane but so compelling. The book is lengthy but every single part is important. I cant just say it was a good book, it doesn't feel right or does justice to how i felt

Anyway, if anyone has made it this far, thanks for the patience and for letting me ramble. Hope you have a great week and dont do cocaine in the burger king parking lot <3

he does, eventually ! Carmelo slowly starts to spend more time with Tobias, so this makes Dino and Francis suspicious. They confront him, and he ends up telling them that he miiiiight have a thing for Tobias. (This happens before Tobi and Carm are a couple, when they start to get closer as friends.) Dino and Francis take it pretty well, they just tease him a lot. Not because he is gay, but because he likes TOBIAS, of all people…

he comes out to his parents a whiiiile after all of this! When Tobias moves in with Carmelo, they are still just friends at this point. Carmelo’s mom LOOOOVES Tobias. She thinks he is the sweetest kid ever. She spoils them both, taking them places and coming home with little treats for them. It makes Tobias feel very safe. Carmelo’s dad doesn’t mind him, he isn’t really around much anyway. Once they start dating, they wait a while to tell his mom. When they do, his mom is veeeery shocked. But. She sees how good Tobias is for Carmelo, and accepts them. She doesn’t treat them any different. Carmelo refused to tell his dad, so his mom did for him. He doesn’t act any different either. He knows, but is quiet about it, he doesn’t make it a big deal. (extra little lore drop ^_^ !!! Tobias does eventually come out to Luther as well. ;] )

Louis I de Bourbon, Prince of Condé

Louis I de Bourbon (l. 1530-1569) was a descendant of Louis IX of France (r. 1226-1270) and founder of the House of Condé. The Prince of Condé proved his valor as a Huguenot military leader during the first three French Wars of Religion and died at the Battle of Jarnac in 1569.

Historical Context

The Protestant Reformation disrupted the religious status quo of the early 1500s in Europe when multitudes embraced the teachings of Martin Luther (l. 1483-1546) and John Calvin (l. 1509-1564). Protestantism made gains in France among the nobility and commoners alike in the first decades of the 16th century and encountered opposition from the Catholic Church. By the mid-16th century, Protestants who followed the teachings of Calvin were known as Huguenots or Calvinists. Marguerite de Navarre (l. 1492-1549) protected Protestant leaders and supported reform efforts in the Catholic Church. She was the sister of King Francis I of France (r. 1515-1547), the mother of Huguenot leader Queen Jeanne d'Albret (l. 1528-1572), and the grandmother of Henry of Navarre (l. 1553-1610), who converted to Catholicism in 1593 to become Henry IV of France, the first Bourbon king. The Protestant challenge to the status quo of the Catholic Church in France eventually led to a bloody struggle between Protestants and Catholics during the French Wars of Religion (1562-1598).

The royal houses of France were often in competition and made alliances according to political expediency. Political intrigues, assassinations, and executions were never far from religious questions. The House of Guise, a minor offshoot of the Dukes of Lorraine, was the most ardent archenemy of Protestants. The Bourbons were princes of royal blood, but distant from the throne and with modest wealth. They were also viewed with suspicion since Charles III de Bourbon had plotted with Henry VIII of England (r. 1509-1547) and Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor (r. 1519-1556) to take up arms against King Francis I. Positions among the high nobility became clearly established with the all-powerful Guises on one side and the Bourbons on the other.

Do we know what Luther, Calvin and other Protestant leaders thought about Anne Boleyn's guilt/innocence after her fall and execution? I read somewhere that Luther was against Katharine and Henry's divorce, but I also read that Luther thought that the rise of the Reformist Anne to the English throne was a good omen).

Do we know if they current Pope, or any of the main Catholic rulers (Spain, France, Portugal) made some comment about it?

I don't recall if Luther remarked on it specifically; although he did refer to her supplanter as an 'enemy of the gospel', so if one was so inclined, one could read into that...?

The Pope, iirc, mainly believed it presaged Anglo-Papal reconciliation (he was mistaken); Chapuys forwarded letters from Charles V where he expressed shock and horror at Henry's near-miss from regicide (whether he believed this himself or thought it was politic to express that he did...things that make you go hmmm), Mary of Hungary was skeptical yet essentially said she deserved to die regardless, so no great wrong was committed.

Today has been a busy day for the St Francis foster cats. 4 of our boys have required vet visits. The lovely old Donald remains well, new boy Larry has received a long lasting antibiotic and pain relief for his nasty injury, fingers crossed a week of medication, food, warmth and love will help him turn a corner. Poor Luther has received antibiotics for his abscess.

The sad news and shock of the day has been poor little Lancelot. He had been doing so well after his dental but has deteriorated gradually over the past fortnight. He was due a check up today but on examination he had to be admitted for blood tests, and is currently hospitalised on a drip. His blood results have shown some worrying results regarding his kidneys. Please keep little Lancelot in your thoughts this weekend. If anyone would like to contribute towards the charity vet bills it would be much appreciated, however small a donation, every penny helps. Thank you.
