Pairing: Jeon Jungkook x Fem. Reader

Synopsis: The reader is a cat lover and Jungkook is a sucker for her.

Note: None of the photos used is mine.

Warning: none, just heart-wrenching fluff and love for animals.

Word Count: 2,148

You must've been cursed; that must be it. Since you were a child, your heart has been cursed with softness. Yup! You're were so soft and sensitive, your little heart could never understand the concept of being cold. This was no different when it came to animals. You appreciated the existence of such pure souls in this cruel world. But then you're a child how could you understand the term or the concept of being cruel. Well, humans were the embodiment of that term, you were convinced. Convinced that a man who hit a poor donkey so harshly is cruel, a woman who shooed a starved kitten is cruel, a man who kept his dog out in the streets during cold nights is cruel, a family who abandons a disabled or an aged dog is cruel. Your poor little heart can't take it.

You remember the incident of the donkey and how his owner mistreated him; you instantly turned to your dad demanding that he must take an action and I quote "daddy, you must hit the man because he's being mean to the donkey!" Which he replied to saying "yes, dear of course; I'll do that." But as any parent would in this situation he promised you empty words, passing the terrible incident and driving away. "Why aren't you doing anything?" The baby you pouted in anger as your car moved away. "Sweetie, I promise I'll return to shout at the man for committing such a terrible act." And of course, as any child would, you trusted your dad to handle the situation.

You just couldn't grasp the mentality of these cruel people, more importantly, your mind couldn't help and create weird scenarios in your head such as: what if this kitty is lost? She must feel cold! She must feel hungry! She must be afraid! And your poor heart was the victim of these thoughts. Your Heart was soft to the point that you would literally shed tears if a cat or a dog looked at you cutely. You would coo at him/her then start crying because and I quote, again "It must feel terrible that they can't express to us how they're feeling, I mean what if he/she is trying to tell us something, but we can't understand him/her!" you'd say with tears flowing down your baby face. You couldn't even bring yourself to categorise animals under the subject "it" when talking or referring to an animal you would always address it according to its gender because you believed that they feel the same way humans feel, and they deserve to be appreciated and loved.

It didn't help that your parents were very strict about their "No pets" rule. You have always wanted to care for a soul; however, that was a big no from your parents. This led to you taking interest in every living animal that passed you by in the streets or was owned by your friends to fill this void in your heart. For instance, you will never forget that one time when you said: "hello kitty!" enthusiastically to a street cat while walking around with a friend of yours. The poor thing stood in its place stiff like a statue of a pharaonic cat as you addressed it. "Oh look, it turned to me when I said hi kitty because it knows it's a cat... Awww!" You said with the same enthusiasm to your friend who witnessed the whole thing wondering if you're sane enough to be let out in the streets or not. "Oh Lord, give me strength!" She said walking away from you. "Bye kitty!"

Today like any other day, you agreed with your fiancé, Jungkook, that you'd meet after you both finish work to have lunch together. "Same as usual?" Jungkook croaked an eyebrow as his eyes scanned the menu for the millionth time in hopes to find a new item that he might like to try, but this was an old restaurant, it never really added anything new to the menu. You hummed looking out of the window next to you. It was raining lightly and the weather was getting chilly by the minute. After placing your orders, Jungkook started telling you about his day as usual as you waited for the food to arrive. "… and Jimin-ssi broke the record today for falling out of the chair. Seriously how could he keep falling out of a chair this easily, I mean the chair was right there!" He laughed looking at you expecting you laugh as well but it seemed that your mind was elsewhere, or your eyes were elsewhere. "Jagiya, what are you looking at?" He turned his gaze to where you were staring. There, by the bus station was a shivering small black kitten that looked like it wanted to fall asleep but couldn't because of the cold. The poor thing was shivering wildly. It also looked like it was malnourished. He looked back at you to find you frowning with pouty lips and teary eyes. "Kookie!" You whined and looked at him, pleading to let you go help the kitten. He already knew what you were thinking, and he loved you for it. Your big heart that spread warmth and generosity in abundance was always something that left him in awe. "You know they won't allow me in with her!" Your puppy eyes were killing him, already. He chuckled, "you know already that it's a girl?" He was constantly shocked by how you could tell whether the animal you were talking about was a boy or a girl, and you rarely guessed wrong. "You know the deal." You chuckled standing up. You took off your scarf and went outside.

You approached the poor kitten slowly so not to startle it. "Hey, baby! You cold?" Your voice took an entirely different tone as if you were talking to a child trying to coax it. "It's okay, I am not going to hurt you." You said heart aching at the way she tried to step away from you. You wrapped her into the warm scarf, petting her to calm her down and to let her know that you didn't intend on hurting her.

Jungkook made his way to you with an umbrella and both of your food, in his other hand that he told the waiter that he would take it away instead of eating in the restaurant. His heart swelled at the view of you gently brushing your finger behind its ears. He sighed taking a seat next to you. You pulled a piece of chicken from your plate, feeding it to the kitten. "Awww, she must have been so hungry." You said as the poor thing devoured the chicken in seconds. "Where's your mummy?" You spoke to the kitten, it only meowed back at you which made your eyes teary. "What if she's lost!" You pouted looking at Jungkook. "Awww Jagiya I am sure her mum went to get her some food." He said scratching the back of his head, not really knowing what to do. He just hated to see you this sad. Your pout intensified as your head made up scenarios such as what if the kitten's mum got hit by a car? Or what if she's not returning? and so on. "We could wait a bit if you want? You know, to make sure that she's safe." He said shrugging. You smiled at him thankful that he put your heart at ease, seeing that you can't find it in you to leave the poor kitten alone. You kept on feeding the kitten as a couple of hours passed by, and yet her mum didn't show up. "Jagiya, you have nothing left to eat!" Jungkook frowned at the empty plate, noting in the back of his head to order you something else when you go home. "It's okay I am not that hungry." You said gaze and mind lost in the petite kitten that now found warmth and comfort in your lap, engulfed by your cosy scarf.

Jungkook knew that you won't eat if another being was hungry, even if you were starving. He smiled, a light bulb appeared above his head, "you know..." You reluctant tore your gaze from the kitten to look at your fiancé. " We can take it home." He smiled widely. "It's a she!" You scoffed then gasped after you realised what he was saying. "Are you... saying that we can keep it?" Your eyes widened at his suggestion. His bunny-like features lit up as he simply shrugged. You shrieked in happiness, "Kookie you're the best!" You said planting a kiss on his cheek. You apologised for the kitten afterwards for startling her, "awww, sorry baby!" You patted her.

You couldn't wipe the smile off of your face as you went to the vet first thing to give her the required vaccinations, clean her up and trim her claws. "We should buy her a few toys, too!" You said lost in thought as you waited for your kitten to finish. Jungkook looking at you in awe, he couldn't help how cute you looked. "… Because you know how mum and dad feel about pets." You were babbling, turning your head towards Jungkook, missing the way he leaned in to capture your lips with his. He kissed you softly and passionately that you were lost when he pulled away. "W-what was that for?" You whispered, his forehead resting on yours as you opened your eyes slowly. "Nothing, you're just so cute I couldn't help it." He chuckled.

"Mr Jeon, Mrs L/N, your pet is all set, did you settle on a name, yet?" A nurse came out holding the kitten in a blue blanket. You grabbed her gently as Jungkook shook his head, "Nah not yet." He turned to you, "do you have anything in mind babe?" You nodded eagerly like a child, "yeah I have a few! But we need to settle on something." You looked at Jungkook who chuckled at your child-like behaviour.

Apparently, on your way to the vet you went through the internet looking for a unique name for your kitten. "I like blackie" Jungkook said eyeing the rest of the list, "I like it to, but I feel like it's racist." You pouted hating the idea of naming her "blackie" because she's black. Jungkook chuckled, "okay, how about Luna?" You hummed, then claimed that it was not unique enough.

"What about Twinkie?"

"Doesn't seem like a girl's name!"

"Babe you're the one who made this list!" He looked up from your phone to see you looking at the kitten instead. "Well, they sounded pretty when I wrote them down, but now that we're serious about keeping her, I feel like I'm picking my child's name. Kook this is a huge responsibility!" You pouted looking at him. He laughed at how you were taking this so seriously, but he understood, you have always wanted a pet, and now that you were having one it felt surreal.

"How about Selena?"

"Sounds posh for a cat!" Jungkook erupted in laughter. Oh God this was going to be fun, he thought shaking his head.

"Did you get it?" You jumped in anticipation as Jungkook returned home with your kitten's gift. He chuckled, "Yup" you jumped from your seat running over to him to see it. It was a collar with her name engraved on a golden piece. "It looks beautiful!" You squealed. "Yeah, baby it does." He said kissing your forehead. There laid the name "Angel" in a neat font. You know it's not that unique but you truly felt that the name suited her perfectly. She stood there looking up at both you and Jungkook, head tilted to the side wondering what's going on. You put the collar around her neck as she kept staring at you with her baby blue eyes that made your heart melt. "I think am in love!" You whispered in awe with teary eyes, Jungkook laughed loudly, thanking God for gifting him with a precious hearted partner as you.

That night you and Jungkook went to bed with Angel sleeping cosily between the two of you. "Thank you." You whispered, patting Angel's soft fur. "What for?" Jungkook looked up to you with doe eyes filled with puzzlement. "For allowing me to experience this, I mean you could have said no to taking Angel in." You whispered, refusing to think of what could have happened to her if you left her that day on the streets. "Babe, it's nothing. I don't even know why we haven't thought of it earlier, you know I don't mind pets." He said shrugging. "Still, thank you. I wanted this for so long." Jungkook looked at you with a soft gaze. He kissed your forehead, muttering a "good night", contentment filling his heart for the new addition to your little family.

The Thirteenth Rule

Tae-eul was given an epiphany. Twice.

That’s why she makes a decision-- destination be damned.

Companion to Three Hours for Chicken and Seo-ryeong vs Lady Noh

Chapter 5 of Days and Nights of Forever

April 2020: Tae-eul was a detective. Her training had taught her three hundred sixty vision, spreading her logic and hypotheses far and wide in all directions to try to predict and identify the motivations and ripples of a crime and a suspect trying not to get caught, or trying to weasel away.

In the normal, non-criminal side of life, it meant she stopped her dad from wasting money on excess groceries, and got Eun-sup out of trouble before he even landed himself in it. She collected evidence and knew how to gather intelligence with or without informants.

So when she was stabbed in the stomach, her detective’s brain went on a three-sixty degree identification of all threats, conscious and subconscious.

“Is there-- Is there any way you could tell if I’m pregnant even if it’s too early?”

The doctor and nurses clutched around her in the ER looked stricken. They all stopped what they were doing. Tae-eul tried not to sob or hurl-- she didn’t know which one was making her stomach churn and her throat tight. Luna had stabbed her and that was… it was too horrifying to think of if she was...

“How early?” the doctor asked, squeezing Tae-eul’s arm as if she knew Tae-eul needed the touch to ground her in the present. “How many days has it been since your period should have come?”

“Um, I think-- I think ten days--two weeks--”

“All right. We’ll check.” The doctor turned to someone. “Run to the lab. Add the test to her vial. Prioritize it so we know what to do.” She turned back to Tae-eul. “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of you in the meantime as if you’re pregnant.”

Tae-eul tried to stay awake, tried to wait to find out, but her detective’s brain had done its job and shut down.

She woke up in her private room. Everything rushed back-- there was no pause, no blinking into consciousness, only instant, real fear which she didn’t even understand. Her heart rate sped up. She looked at the tube curled and attached on the back of her wrist, followed the line to the bags on the stand. What was in those bags? Was she--

“Hi Lieutenant Jeong. It’s me. I’m Dr Bong.” Tae-eul turned at the voice and recognized the kind intern or resident who had treated her in the ER. “You’re all right. Thankfully, there was no major trauma, and you avoided a laceration on your liver by two centimeters.”

The intern paused and smiled hesitantly. “You are not-- were not-- pregnant.”

Just like that, Tae-eul could breathe again. The doctor seemed to understand. She reached out to pat Tae-eul’s hand. “You’ll be fine. You’re on antibiotics and opioids for the pain.”

Tae-eul wiped the tears she didn’t even realize had tracked down her cheeks. “Gomapseumnida.”

The doctor nodded, smiling. “If you’re hungry, you can eat. We’ll bring you food in a little while.”

Tae-eul thanked the doctor again and turned her head to look out the window. She tentatively felt her side-- stiff with thick bandages. There was a sore, tender feeling deep beneath the skin, nothing like the pain she’d felt when she was stabbed, but still painful even if it was currently a dull pain.

Not pregnant. Was not pregnant. Good. That was really good. She had plans for Luna, and Tae-eul was relieved she didn’t have to kill Luna, because she would have if Luna had--

It would be ridiculous to-- she sighed, swallowed, and tried to stop her lips from trembling. It was ridiculous to want, to love a--

She didn’t even know where Gon was.

She didn’t know where Gon was.

That was exactly the reason the possibility of being pregnant had both terrified and comforted her.

If she never saw him again, she wouldn’t be alone, wouldn’t really be without him, if she had a--

She couldn’t even mention it in her head.

She sighed. She swiped at her eyes and appreciated that the hospital people had placed her phone within easy reach. She dialed.

“Hyeong-nim. Where are you? I need you to find the other me. Luna. I’m fine, I’m good. Okay. Good. I’ll come.”

Tae-eul was glad for her detective’s brain anyway. It can compartmentalize. First, get out of bed. Then, get Luna.

And if Gon came back to her, she wasn’t letting him go.

June 2020:

She very vividly remembered the weekend she had called their life a melodrama.

It was one of those May days that made you sure of summer. It wasn’t wet, and it wasn’t cold.

That was also the first time they were sent to present-day Corea-- since the reset anyway.

That was also the time Gon told her about Kang Shin-jae, the real Kang Shin-jae in the Republic. She’d cried. She had missed him. The Shin-jae she’d known became Kang Hyeon-min of the kingdom and she remembered and missed him.

That May night in 2020, Gon told her that he had met Kang Shin-jae, had actually changed Shin-jae’s life by delaying his walk to that deadly curve in the street. And then Gon had later seen him, a chaebol heir with all the trimmings, bowing underlings and chauffeured luxury vehicle. So that was what his life was meant to be. She had embraced Gon in tears and was truly glad the manpasikjeok also made that right.

“I think that’s the last time we went to the past,” Gon had said, smiling ruefully at her tears.

“No, no, we went to 2016, too. I think that’s the last.”

“Oh, you’re right. But that was a bust, wasn’t it? We didn’t do much. Well, we did a little.”

She’d giggled while swatting at his hand, which had burrowed under her pajama top to stroke her back earlier while she cried, and now started wandering.

They’d arrived at the kingdom of 2016 and they had stayed in his study, with Gon distractedly signing off on the various petitions on his desk. She had protested at how careless he was being, but he showed her they were harmless, miscellaneous documents that really only needed the king’s signature, referrals and recommendations and certificates of merit.

And then, back on that night in May 2020 while recalling their trip to 2016, Gon had stopped moving and stared at her. “I suddenly remember one of the papers I signed. Unless I’m mistaken, I think I signed Koo Seo-gyeong’s recommendation to the Interpol.”

“Really?”

Gon looked incredulous, amazed. “I can see it clearly in my mind’s eye now, but it didn’t register with me at the time. You were distracting. You laid down on that chaise by the fire and I wanted to get to you.” He grinned at her unimpressed expression. “Is that what we were meant to do that time? Because I usually don’t sign those documents. I just grabbed random stacks of papers from Secretary Mo’s office for something to pretend to do in the study.”

“What do you mean you don’t sign them? So those people who need your signature usually go without?”

“We have stamps. Secretary Mo’s staff just use stamps. Those papers don’t even go to me. I’m not really needed..”

“Ahh.” Tae-eul smiled. “Well, don’t be too full of yourself. I’m sure your signature didn’t matter much. Seo-gyeong is too cool not to get into Interpol.”

Gon grinned. “You know what else? Kang Hyeon-min followed her there.”

“Wow. They make a cute couple.”

And Gon had made an unimpressed face that made her laugh and tickle him with her own hands under his pajamas.

So that May weekend was memorable for her. It was full of revelations.

It was also the last time she had her period. It was June now. She should have had her period over a week ago. The only time she was late, it was understandable because she’d been running on high levels of anxiety.

Otherwise, her cycle had always run like clockwork. She’d been feeling some tenderness so she thought her period might come today. She had just come into Gon’s bathroom to check again. She looked down at her clean underwear. Nothing.

Maybe tomorrow.

She left the bathroom lost in thought. She didn’t register the childish chatter she could hear so she gasped when she rounded the corner and something collided with her knees.

“Noona!”

“Look who’s here,” Gon said belatedly.

Tae-eul chuckled and went down on her knees so she could hug little Woo-jin at his level. He was at that age when he didn’t appreciate being scooped up any more-- except when he wanted airplane rides and piggy backs.

“Are we kidnapping you again?” Tae-eul asked, pinching those cheeks. Woo-jin laughed. It was an inside joke between the three of them, kidnapping Secretary Mo’s son and escaping from the palace.

“Yes, yes! Let’s go kidnapping! Let’s go bounce!”

Tae-eul looked up at Gon, laughing. “Did he just use slang with me?”

Gon knelt down beside her, grinning. “He means Vaunce. It’s a trampoline park. You want to go?”

Tae-eul looked between them, and Gon imitated Woo-jin’s pouty-pleading face. She couldn’t help laughing. “Let’s go bounce then!”

Gon changed into his incognito outfit. T-shirt, light denim jacket, jeans. He also washed his hair to remove the mousse and let his hair dry just lying naturally on his head.

Then he changed Woo-jin into a similar outfit. Secretary Mo liked dressing her son like a little prep school boy, and in previous kidnappings, he and Tae-eul had to buy Woo-jin clothes he could play in.

Tae-eul had changed too. Her detective outfit-- her usual shirt, vest, jacket and boxy jeans combo-- didn’t fit a trampoline park, so she picked skinny jeans and a pullover she wouldn’t have to keep hold of if she decided to go all out on a trampoline.

“Right, Yeong says the getaway car’s on its way to pick us... up--” Gon trailed off, looking from Woo-jin to her, and smiled that boyish smile she loved. “You look nice.”

She wrinkled her nose. “Maybe we should cut your hair.”

Gon looked exasperated. He picked up Woo-jin. “There. See? Here’s my disguise.”

Woo-jin giggled.

They were off, and Tae-eul tried not to be nervous. Being out in the open in present-day Corea made her feel exposed. But thankfully Gon’s disguise worked. The first time it worked they were so stunned they laughed for three minutes straight, disbelieving that it was that easy.

It was ridiculous but it was effective. Sans bodyguards and trademark hair and long coats, and with Woo-jin in his arms, Gon didn’t look like the king. No one expected it would be the king. They had gone about their day in Busan without anyone making a fuss.

Or Coreans were simply not too nosy about other families.

That made her stomach flutter. She knew how they looked. Gon knew how they looked. Woo-jin even called them Omma and Appa in these kidnappings, so they wouldn’t be “caught by the police.” It was part of their inside joke.

Gon smiled at her in that happy, satisfied way, tucking her against his side with his other arm while holding Woo-jin in the other as they walked from the car-- an ordinary car he drove himself-- to the park.

Then they were inside and Tae-eul laid a hand on Gon’s arm when he was buying the tickets.

“What is it?” he asked.

The smell of rubber and disinfectant spray, the noise from the kids, and the colorful interior of the indoor park all churned inside her head, making her chest pound, because a single thought stood out starkly like a big monument amid the swirl of color and sound.

“Omma--”

Woo-jin’s voice-- and what he said-- brought Tae-eul back. Her heart was still racing.

“What is it?” Gon asked again, looking concerned now. “Are you alright? Do you want Viewing Only?”

Tae-eul shook her head, as much to clear it as to answer Gon. “Of course not. I’m fine. Sorry. Go ahead. Let’s bounce!”

There was no way she wouldn’t be okay bouncing on a trampoline park. Even if-- even if she were-- it was too early, and she knew women did so much more and they were fine.

God.

Gon turned down the blankets for her and then immediately caged her with his arms and legs, maneuvering her to face him with her head pillowed on his upper arm.

“What’s wrong? You’ve been distracted all day.” He stroked her hair and cupped her cheek, fingers gently stroking her ear.

Tae-eul stared into those eyes, looked at that face, sank further into his arms, and forgot why she was scared in the first place.

“I need to take a pregnancy test.”

She watched his face and loved what she saw there. The movement of his eyes and cheeks and lips made her heart speed up and she felt like she’d been jumping on trampolines again. He was surprised. He was stunned. He wasn’t unhappy. He opened his mouth but nothing came out at first. Tae-eul waited.

“Are you-- do you-- how do you feel?”

And Tae-eul fell more deeply in love with him than ever. In her head, she’d imagined him saying or asking so many other things, his scientific brain demanding facts, but no, the first thing he asked was how she felt about this.

She wrapped her arms around his waist and snuggled her face against his chest, kissing him there through his pajama top.

When she spoke, everything she’d been holding back all day spilled out. The one big thought that had haunted her all day, until now. “I didn’t want to go on the trampolines-- I just suddenly realized it when we were getting tickets. It suddenly terrified me if it might hurt the-- but lots of women do much more while they don’t know they’re-- and I’m still okay and--”

His arms tightened around her. She felt the shudder that ran through him. She stroked his back to soothe him and he mirrored the action, and kissed her hair.

She knew he understood. That was how she felt about this. She didn’t even know yet if she was really-- but she was already terrified about hurting it.

That was all that mattered, that was the important thing, that she hadn’t hurt it.

Everything else-- the fact that they lived in different worlds-- it was all inconsequential.

“We’ll go first thing tomorrow,” he said, his voice a little gravelly.

She nodded against him, and they fell asleep like that, after what felt like hours of just quietly holding each other.

They went to a clinic in the republic. He helped her look for a specialty clinic with its own lab, so they wouldn’t have to wait days for the results. He was adamant that they didn’t go to an outright hospital with an OB-gyne department, because she would have been unnecessarily “exposed to something.”

The OB was a cute woman with a bob. Tae-eul liked her immediately. She explained the options to Tae-eul, and Tae-eul chose the blood test without waiting for the doctor to finish explaining the vaginal sono.

The doctor laughed but said she understood. No point having to go through that when Tae-eul hadn’t even taken a home PT. She wanted the blood test to give her a definite answer. So Tae-eul peed in a cup and her blood was taken and that was it.

They did have to wait two hours so they could have the results of the urine and blood test together. They went to a cafe and sat in a booth tucked away near the back.

“Let’s not get our hopes up.”

He grinned and took her hands, just wrapping his fingers over hers around her mug of hot chocolate. “So you hope for it, too, do you?”

She shook her head at him and tried to stay rational. “We’re careful. The chances are point zero zero three percent.”

“I’ll take those chances. We’ve always been exceptional.”

Tae-eul just looked at him sardonically. He laughed.

They ordered food and ate, talking about everything else but what they were waiting for.

They both knew they couldn’t discuss anything yet until they knew.

And Tae-eul was glad about having him this time, anchoring her, being the giddy one so she could be the calm one, and she was able to eat just fine, all her nerves calm and steady because he was there with her and everything would be just fine.

That she wasn’t pregnant was an anticlimax she didn’t know what to do with.

They’d thanked the doctor and she had smiled at them. “Keep trying! It won’t take long. I hope to see you again and give you the good news.”

They got in the car and just sat there for a few moments, with Gon looking at her and her looking at her hands in her lap.

“Tae-eul?”

She looked at him and smiled. “Let’s go back to the bamboo forest.”

He seemed to understand--he always did-- and started the car without pressing her further.

Tae-eul leaned back in her seat and closed her eyes, meditating on what she’d just discovered about herself, and what it meant for them.

The rest of the drive to the bamboo grove, they stayed silent. At some point, Gon reached for her hand and brought their hands up to stroke her cheek for a moment.

“Saranghae.”

She enclosed his hand with both of hers, resting their hands on the center console and turning to him a little without opening her eyes. She smiled. “Nado.”

When they sat on a bench in the bamboo grove, Tae-eul was resolved.

Since she met him she’d had to take several leaps of faith and he had always proven worth it, everything about him was real, true, pure-- well, not pure, because she’d seen him kill and purity wasn’t important anyway-- and he was home to her. He was her home and they were both living and loving this strange and wonderful fate but she was ready if that fate meant so much more.

She wanted so much more.

She’d been through this twice now and both times had shown her what she wanted, what her heart absolutely ached for each time it happened.

She looked at him and she didn’t have to tell him to look at her because he already was, peering at her face, looking worried. She smiled and smoothed her thumb on his forehead.

He blinked at her and in a matter of two blinks his eyes sparkled with unshed tears. She smiled and felt tears run down her own cheeks. He wiped them and then just held her cheeks, too. They probably looked ridiculous to passersby but she didn’t care.

“Well,” he said, then exhaled and took a deep breath. He slid his arms around her and held her tightly. “Well, I always follow your rules, don’t I?”

Pairing: Fili x Reader

Warnings: Fluff and teeny weeny angst for plot and THAT’S IT

Summary: (Y/N) helps Prince Fili picks gifts out for his lady friend at the market.

It wasn’t common for the royals to take part in the madness of market day. For hundreds of years, if the royal family needed something- special treats, fabric, jewelry, ornaments, weapons- gifts from the best tradesmen were gladly delivered to the mountain. It was tradition.

Nowadays, the kingdom was used to seeing one of the royal family moseying through every week. Fili didn’t necessarily enjoy the bustling streets, the strong smells of over fermented beer and halfway rancid meat, or the loud music from the amateur bands that echoed through the market. He definitely didn’t enjoy hundreds of pairs of expecting eyes on him. But he did enjoy spending time at one tent in particular.

As always, he took his time looking at the treats and gifts his people loved to shove in his face. He often purchased delicious cakes for his brother from kind, wrinkly old Miss Diyla in the second tent from the mountain. Some days, the treats wouldn’t make it back and they were washed down with the port he’d bought for his uncle. He would make sure to buy more on his way back home- no one needed to know and old Miss Diyla kept his secret.

But no matter how many tents he stopped at, Fili was always on a mission. He wanted to see (Y/N) and make her smile.

She was a sweet young dam who sold handmade outerwear with her family in the fourth tent down from the mountain. (Y/N). When he’d first met her, she shied away from his presence and let her father do all the bowing, speaking, and selling. Only after weeks of Fili’s visits, did she warm up to him, growing confident in her place with him and within the market. The shawls and sweaters she made were the most popular in the kingdom and she always took time to smile at him and speak with him. He’d grown to know her as much as she’d allow and he wanted more.

Today, his mission was more important than ever. He weaved through the smiling dwarrows, nodding and shaking hands until he reached the fourth tent. But he only saw (Y/N)’s mother who grinned at him.

“(Y/N)’s in the back,” she said, skipping the small talk and giving him the information she knew he wanted.

He nodded with a small smile. Caught, he thought. “Well, I won’t bother her. I’ll stop by on my way back through.”

“No, no,” (Y/N)’s mother waved him off. “Go on back. She’ll be glad to see you.”

A goofy grin tugged at his lips and he bowed his head. Then he ducked under the tent and around to the back. He heard her singing softly before he saw her. He took a chance and peeked over the canvas, seeing her intent on her knitting. Her deft, delicate fingers whipped around the needles as her beautiful work grew longer in her lap. The tune she sang to herself was familiar to him, one he’d often heard his mother sing to Kili when he was acting up as a dwarfling.

She hummed the last line and spun her work in her hands.

“I’ve never heard that verse before.”

She looked up, startled. He didn’t miss her breath catch in her throat as she looked at him. It made him wonder if she had been expecting him, waiting for him, or if she hardly thought of him at all when he wasn’t standing right here in front of her.

She almost dropped her needles as she moved to stand. “Prince Fili-”

“No, sit. I didn’t mean to stop you. Continue your work,” he said. “What will it be?”

“A simple shawl. They’re popular when the weather turns.”

He knelt before her and fingered the ends of the soft, knitted material hanging over her knees. “It’s beautiful.”

She smiled. Mission accomplished. “Thank you,” she said. Then she stood, folding her work and tucking the needles inside. “I’ve only just begun and my fingers are already cramping,” she said. Her soft laugh wisped past his ears like a spring breeze.

“Then take a walk with me.” He held out his arm and she took it, turning her face to hide the blush creeping up her neck to her cheeks.

He led her to the front of the tent and looked over the expertly crafted work of her and her family. He reached for a pair of fine leather gloves. “I haven’t seen these before.”

“(Y/N) is especially proud of them, my prince. She just finished them last evening,” (Y/N)’s mother said.

“I’ll take them,” he said.

(Y/N) pulled on his arm. “No, no. I’ll make you better ones! This is the first time I’ve worked with leather. I’ll make them to your specifications and have them for you next week. Please.”

He slipped his hand into the glove. “(Y/N), you should be proud of these. They’re perfect. I want to be the first to support your new work.” He reached for his purse.

“Oh, no, Prince Fili. If you’d like them, just take them.”

“Absolutely not. You’ll take this and no less,” he said, handing her mother a small stack of gold coins that made her eyes grow wide.

“But-”

“And I’ll hear no more of the matter,” he said with a wink. “Will you still walk with me?”

“Of course.”

She allowed him to lead her through the market. He thought back to the first time he’d done so and remembered (Y/N) being so shy, barely saying a word to him and shying away from the loud music and prying eyes. Now, he felt her straighten her back and shoulders like she was proud to be on his arm. He convinced himself he was imagining it.

“Really, Prince Fili, you did not have to do that, but I thank you all the same,” she said.

“I have asked you at least a dozen times to call me Fili.”

“And you will have to ask me at least a dozen times more before I do,” she said. He saw a smirk on her lips.

“As long as that means twelve more walks through the market with you, I’m content.”

He watched her fingers run longingly over the fabric of a cloak as she passed it. He would have to put his plan in motion now if he wanted it to succeed. He cleared his throat that suddenly felt tight with nerves. “I would greatly appreciate your help, (Y/N). You see, I am out shopping for a specific someone today.”

“Prince Kili?”

“No. I-uh, actually a friend. A female friend.”

“Oh.”

“In less than a fortnight, there will be a celebration and I wanted to… I know this person has nothing to wear to a- a ball and I need…”

“You need a dam’s touch.”

“Yes.” He brought her back to the cloak she had been looking at. “Would something like this- would you like something like this?”

“Oh, it’s very beautiful,” she said. She pulled him down the street before whispering, “But that wouldn’t last a week.” Her grip around his arm tightened as she rushed through the market with a particularly excited skip in her step. “This is where you want to go,” she said, pulling him into a small tent that was tightly packed with dams’ cloaks, gowns, and dresses. “These things are very well made-they’ll last forever. And they’re gorgeous.”

She weaved through the hanging clothes, letting her gentle fingers run down the fabric of everything she passed. “Is her hair light or dark?”

Her question yanked him from his blurry thoughts as he watched her. “My-the friend? The dam? Similar to yours.”

“Oh, well then you’ll want something like this.” She pulled out a long gown of deep red with silver trimming. “This color will match your robes almost perfectly. She will be attending with you?”

“I hope she will be.”

She stopped her twirling. “How could she say no to you?” She held the dress up to another one, but put the second one back. “I think this one will be best. It won’t have to be altered it it’s in this style.”

Fili nodded to the attendant, asking him to wrap it and hold it for him. He breathed out a laugh, watching (Y/N) rush through the different racks. He wondered if she had ever purchased anything from this tent herself. A dreamy smile donned her features as she pulled out a skirt and held it against her waist, kicking the train out in front of her. “What else?” he asked when she was done.

“What do you mean?”

“What else would you want if you could have anything? If you were going to a ball. A cloak?”

“Will she be travelling?”

Fili’s mind stuttered again. “Let’s… let’s get one just in case.”

It didn’t take her long to pick out a velvet, hooded cloak of deep grey. “This is very warm and will set off clothing of any color. And it has pockets!”

“What more?” he asked.

“More?”

“Do you think it’s too much?”

“No. I was thinking-that you’re very thoughtful. She is very lucky to have you care for her so.” She turned from him and coughed. “Well, we have a cloak, we have a gown. What about jewelry?”

“Lead the way, (Y/N).” He held his arm out to her and she took it.

As she passed the next tent, she fingered a blue cable knitted sweater, smiled to herself and sighed.

“Do you like that?” he asked.

“Actually, I thought it would look very handsome on you. The yarn is very soft and almost the same color as your eyes. Like the sky. But the best jewelry is made by this woman over here.”

The change of subject mixed with her compliment and attentions made his mind swim. So she liked him in blue. He didn’t own much blue, but he would after today. She was leaning over the jewelry that was laid out on a table covered in black velvet. He placed a hand on the small of her back. “Which do you like?”

“You pick,” she said. She giggled at his awe parted lips.

“But you’re supposed to be helping me. I need your advice. Which would you like?”

She brought her clasped hands to her chest. “If I were her, I would want something that you picked out.” After a moment, her fingers reached out and she sped through the words, “But silver would match the trimming on the dress.” Then her hands covered her mouth, muffling her giddy laugh.

He bent over the many necklaces and earrings and rings, feeling like a complete imbecile. He felt her eyes on him. He took a breath. “Some of these are very gaudy, hm?” Her laugh made a smirk pull at his lips. He lifted a simple necklace of twisted, circling silver and laid it in his hand. “This one?”

“It’s lovely.”

He met her in the street after settling and having the jewelry wrapped by the seller. He pulled her out of the way of a drunkard with firm hands on her waist and wrist. Then she slid her arm through his and they traveled slowly back to her tent.

“Thank you for your help today, (Y/N).”

“Thank you, Prince Fili, for the wonderful distraction. As always, I’ve enjoyed our walk.”

He held the tent flap open for her and she ducked inside. “Now I’ve seen you safely back, I’ll let you continue your work. I look forward to seeing it, and you, next week.” He kissed her hand and disappeared.

(Y/N) set her unfinished shawl in her lap but had trouble seeing the stitches through her blurred vision. So she was right. He didn’t have feelings for her after all, he was just being kind. Whoever this mystery dam was, she was very lucky.

Fili walked through the mountain with a sloppy grin on his face that pulled the attention of passing servants but he didn’t care. His plan had been an absolute success. He pushed the door to his chambers open and wasn’t surprised to see Kili sitting on his bed. Fili greeted him and tossed him the bag of cakes.

“All twelve of them are in here, I presume?” Kili said with a mouth full of one.

“Kili, if you’re going to be so possessive over cakes, you should go to the market yourself.”

“But if you didn’t go to the market for me you’d never see your sweet friend, (Y/N).” He shoved another cake in his mouth, dropping crumbs on the furs of Fili’s bed. “How’d it go today, anyway? Did you blow it?”

“No, I did not blow it. It actually worked perfectly. You should have seen her running around through the market. It was pretty adorable.”

“’Pretty adorable’? Mahal, Fili, just marry the dam already.”

Fili put a knee on his bed and leaned to the bag of treats. “Give me one of those. It’s my delivery fee.”

“One! Now, go! Go far away! I hope you tip this old Miss Diyla,” Kili said.

“I tip her very well. With your money.”

“Well, good.” Kili chewed the last one and laid back on the bed, sighing. “So you had the gifts delivered to (Y/N)’s house?”

“I took them myself and left the box for her with a note inside. Hopefully she’ll say yes to attending the ball with me.”

“She will.”

Fili hummed, laying back on the bed and resting his head on Kili’s stomach.

The next day, Fili opened his chamber door after the knocker sounded to see one of the servants to the royal family. “Hello, Rava.”

Rava bowed. “My prince. There is a dwarrowdam to see you. Her name is (Y/N).”

“(Y/N)’s here? Where?” He frantically looked through the halls, seeing no one.

“At the foot of the mountain, my prince.”

Fili rushed to tuck his tunic into his trousers and roll up the sleeves of his blue sweater as he hurried down the corridor. “In future, always invite her in. And bring her straight to me, she is a friend.”

“Yes, my prince. Would you like me to-”

“All is well, I’ll find her. Good day, Rava.”

Fili barely heard Rava return his farewell as he leapt down the stairwell and landed at the foot of the mountain. His hands were trembling as he looked through the field under the mountain, searching for her. He was sweating now, from nerves and excitement as well as from the exercise of sprinting through the corridors. Then he saw her.

She was sitting on a bench placed against the rock of the mountain that overlooked the massive hill with Dale at the bottom. She faced away from him and the breeze blew her hair from her neat braid. He jogged to her, then checked himself and strode to stand before her.

“(Y/N). I didn’t expect to see you today.”

She stood and he saw the box in her hands. “I apologize for having come with no warning, but I needed to bring these gifts to you. There must have been some confusion at the market. Everything we picked out for your friend was mistakenly delivered to me.”

“It wasn’t a mistake,” Fili said. Just then, three dwarflings flew by them, waving swords at each other and playfully reenacting the Battle of the Five Armies for Erebor. He chuckled. “We can’t speak here. Come with me.” He took the box from her and led her around the mountain to the edge of the royal gardens. He set the box down and reached for (Y/N)’s hands, pulling her to sit next to him. “It wasn’t a mistake. I delivered the gifts to your house myself.”

She waited for him to speak more. When he said nothing, she said, “I am- I don’t understand.”

“Did you open the box?”

She shook her head. “No. I recognized the markings from the tradesmen we visited and knew it wasn’t mine to open.”

He chuckled at her innocence, her sense of propriety, her true heart. “It is yours to open. See?” He set the box on his lap and opened the top, allowing her to see the note tucked gently inside.

She lifted it and read it. He watched her brows dance in confusion, then excitement, then something he couldn’t quite place. “You’re asking me to attend the ball with you? Me?”

“Yes. And these gifts are for you. I wanted to be sure you’d like them.”

“What? I can’t- I can’t accept these things. These beautiful, expensive things! I’ve done nothing to deserve them!”

He closed the box and set it out of the way, taking her hands in his again. They fit perfectly together, much like the leather gloves she’d made. “You’ve spent hours of your day walking through the market with me. For months, you’ve made me look forward to seeing you for just that one day a week. You’ve shared your thoughts, memories, laughs and smiles with me. You’ve captured my heart, the least you deserve are a few simple gifts.”

She stood, trying to peel her hands from his, but he chased her, managing to keep one of her hands in his grasp. “What must you think of me?” Her free fingers went to her red cheek. “Running around like a fool picking out gifts? Gifts for myself no less!” She groaned, covering her eyes.

Fili chuckled, pulling her closer to him. “I enjoyed spending time with you yesterday. I enjoyed spoiling you!”

“But those things don’t matter! Material things mean nothing to me compared to your kindness and your time. I won’t take these gifts. You’ll think I only want your money- your-your crown! I promise you, I don’t! That’s not what our-what this friendship is, I swear to you.”

He gripped her chin gently. “How could you believe I’d think that of you? Don’t you know I can spot a fake smile from a mile away? Yours… you are so genuine and so true. I want to give you these things so you can have a wonderful time celebrating with me at the ball, not to win you over. I… I actually hoped I’d already done that part.” His fingers trickled through her hair and landed on her waist.

Her thumb lifted to swipe over his cheek. “You have. You succeeded in that long ago.”

He felt his cheeks burning as he smiled hard. He dug through his pocket as he said, “Then I have one more thing for you.”

“Oh, no, Fili. Please, no more.”

“Just look at it.” He lifted two courting beads, flattening out his hand so she could see. She gasped at the small braid clasps, squeezing his arm that circled her waist. “Do you see the runes? Yours and mine. And rubies-”

“Like your crown in court.”

He hummed, watching her eyes fill with emotion.

“They’re beautiful.”

“They’re yours if you want them. And so am I.”

“Of course I do,” She held his face and kissed him.

He deepened the kiss and allowed his hands to roam over her back, shoulders, and waist as much as he thought was proper. Then he drew away, remembering he hadn’t even braided her hair yet. And they were out in the royal gardens for all to see. Her face flushed and he knew she realized the same thing.

“I was right,” she said.

He pecked her lips, making her giggle. “About what?”

“You do look exceedingly handsome in blue sweaters.” Her fingers ran down his chest.

“Good. Because I bought three of them yesterday.”

Resonance: A town nearby the Academy of Iron and Light and right by the tomb of the Goddess. “Koren Vey raised her hands again, and up from the ground came hills and valleys that reminded Robb of the backs of those scaly lizards Erik used to put in his bed as a child to scare him, but then he recognized the strange-shaped pool of water in the valley. “Hold on. That’s Lake Myriad. And that pass in the mountains is the Rigid Bone. I know these landmarks. It’s in the Bavania Range”—Robb motioned to the mountains—“because that’s the valley near …” He went very quiet. “The valley near … ?” Ana prodded. “Near the Academy.” (Sos, II: Starless, Robb).

Luna

A moon of Eros, Luna is the location of The Iron Palace. Nothing besides the palace is mentioned to be on Luna, but that doesn’t mean such is so.

The Iron Palace: “The Iron Palace looked like a shard of black glass against the otherwise pale landscape of the moon, a gloomy fortress. The palace is also described as a real maze for those who don’t know their way, with identical hallways that Ana only found her way around once she learned which vases and paintings were in which halls. There’s also a system of servant passages that allow servants to move seamlessly through the building and attend to matters unseen. These passages are used by Robb to visit Ana, Malifare as she poses as Ana’s handmaid, and Ana when she was lured into the North Tower.

Messiers stand at every corner, in the gardens, and at the palace doors. They by-and-large don’t do much.

Nevaeh

Nevaeh is a space station city whose orbit lies between Eros’ and Iliad’s. “The cityscape of Nevaeh passed below, a grid of grimy, dilapidated buildings. Nevaeh had been the only safe haven from the Plague twenty years ago, so everyone who was not infected had moved here – including Ironbloods, who created the gardens to separate themselves from the citizens. An extra layer of protection from the Plague. But soon the space station fell into disarray, with too many citizens and too little space and no money left to buy land on-world on Eros or Iliad after the Plague was eradicated.” (HoI, I: Iron Theif, Robb).

Astoria: Astoria is the Valerios’ garden estate. As stated above, the Ironbloods took refuge from the Plague in Nevaeh as everyone else, but installed for themselves floating garden estates which hang above the city. Astoria is filled to the brim with exotic flora, including hedge mazes, thorny bushes, and plenty of room to host events.

Shrine: There is a large, prominent shrine on Nevaeh in which Ana’s adventure begins – attempting to steal the coordinates to the Tsarina from Robb – and ends – in a fight against Malifare that is eventually won by her, Di, and Siege. “At the head of the shrine stood the statue of the Moon Goddess, seven men high, her arms oustretched as she looked to some distant point in the domed ceiling, where murals of the Moon Goddess’s story, the kingdom of shadows and the girl of light, were painted. The entire space station of Nevaeh felt empty in the shrine, as if the world only existed between the alabaster pillars and stained-glass trappings, so quiet she could hear the electric hum of Di’s wires and functions, as soft and soothing as a song.” (HoI, I: Iron thief, Ana)

There are 999 candles lit in the shrine, representing the 999 years of the Iron Kingdom (one (1) additional candle is added after the 1,000th anniversary). Even the statue of the Goddess was covered in candles, Ana having to navigate them to get to the heart in the Goddess’ hands. In Soul of Stars, the shrine’s tomb has been damaged and the shrine itself set alight during Malifare’s search for her heart, but efforts to reconstruct it were already evident when Ana came back to retrieve the heart from its hiding spot.

Iliad

Iliad is the second planet from the sun, the only to be described as having rings, and hosts the city of Zenteli, where the Solani ark crash-landed 1,000 years prior to the story. Iliad’s cities are said to be “Crime ridden” (HoI, I: Iron thief, Ana). Not much is known of Iliad other than it having fighting rings where Lenda fought and Di – and presumably the rest of the Dossier – was shot at by mercenaries there once, earning him a ding to his chassis. Iliad is also where Di visited a mechanic and found out his memory core was malfunctioning, a malady for which there was no fix.

Zenteli: “Zenteli was a city unlike anywhere [Robb had] ever been before. It shone alabaster white in the sun, almost indistinguishable from the clouds surrounding it. The city was one of the last safe havens away from the HIVE and Messiers, because of an age-old treaty with the kingdom that barred kingdom influence in the Solani city. Located on the peak of a mountain range near the northern pole of Iliad, it should have been cold, but the sunlight kept the city warm and comfortable. Beneath the mountain was a valley where the original Solani ark had crashed over a thousand years ago. As the Dossier broke through the clouds, the sight of the ruined ship was monstrously large—more like the carcass of a living creature than a ship at all. … While the outer walls of the city were made of sandstone, most of the buildings built into the top of the mountain were made of marble. The city was clean and well kept, far older than most cities on Eros. It also had one of the only Iron Shrines that still stood untouched, a shard of white blending in with the rest of the buildings.” (SoS, II: Starless, Robb)

The most impressive feature of the city is the Shining Spire, which appears to function as a Solani palace. The Spire is multi-purpose, being the place where Jax was taken to the med bay, the crew were kept in prison cells, and the Elder counsel met. The spire features a lovely garden that overlooks the ark’s valley, which would have been lovelier if they’d visited when Jax wasn’t actively dying. Inside the spire, “Cloudy crystalline walls separated one room from another, the doors clear as glass. It was so bright, [Robb’s] eyes watered. The medical ward looked more like the inside of a star.” (SoS, II: Starless, Robb) On every wall in the Spire are etched names, presumably of Solani who have died – perhaps only Solani royalty or those of importance, but that’s unconfirmed – and also Jax’s name, carved when he was on his deathbed.

The Ark: Called the allahlav in the Old Language, “It had taken only an hour or so to get down the side of the mountain, with the help of a few pulleys and antiquated zip lines hidden in the foliage. The last bit of the trail was a hilly descent into the valley, and the ark already looked impossibly big. It had once housed hundreds of thousands of Solani—but Ana hadn’t realized how big it was until she was halfway down the mountain and the bones of the ship stretched from one side of the valley to the other, like the skeleton of some great beast of lore. It wasn’t a natural valley, but a crater made from its impact.

The ancient ark stood in all its ghostly glory. It was so much larger than Ana could have anticipated, its crystalline structure reminding her more of fossils found in the earth than a ship at all. Great vine-covered pillars curved inward, reaching five hundred feet in the air to make a sort of rib cage for a great beast. The ark spread out in both directions, so long it faded into the trees on either side. It was like nothing in the Iron Kingdom because it wasn’t made of iron or copper or gold. It was ivory and ancient.”

How They Met Chapter 20

A/n: twenty. Chapter. omg..... I never thought I would ever get to post it this much. It’s only thanks to all my readers that I find the ability and courage to keep posting this story. This is a longer chapter for sure. :) Sorry about the long wait between updates. Life is getting to me and it’s causing a bit of a writer’s block lmao but I’m here!!!

The next day I saw the mark fully. It wasn’t as big as I thought and easily covered by some concealer he had for apparently the same reason. We spent it mostly in our room. It was a rainy day here anyway so being outside wouldn’t have been much fun. The next day was the one I had been waiting for. That night was the party. I was really nervous honestly. I had no idea how to act at things like this. I didn’t really get a lot of time to worry about that though. Around noon, Ardyn got a call. We were in the middle of talking about who all was going to be there over lunch when his phone went insane. He glance at it and quickly answered.

“Chancellor….. Yes.” He beamed then.

“Perfect!!! And everything…? Yes we have shoes…. Perfect! Oh I do owe you my dear.” He chuckled then.

“I’ve got a fitting at three. The party starts at five. I’d like to pick her up here at the hotel if that is… oh good. Yes I will make sure of it. Thank you.” He hung up then and I gave him an odd look. He smiled then.

“I know you were worried about tonight… So I made arrangements. Thanks to my habit of buying suits, I’ve made friends with some of the dress shops here. One has a full salon and such with it. I’ve made arrangements for them to help you find a dress from any of the shops in a color to match mine… and for them to help you with hair and such.” I almost choked then and he froze. I got the bite down then and looked at him.

“Ardyn… how…. ? Oh my gods…. “ He smiled then.

“Skylar… You’re my lover… I want you to look like a princess tonight. If this is the only dance you come to in your life…. I want to make sure it’s the best one.” I sighed then letting my shoulders drop then.

“You’re insane…. But I’m grateful… Thank you Ardyn….” He smiled then and gently kissed my hand.

“Anything for my princess.” I felt myself blush then and we finished lunch. He had me grab my new silver heels then and we took off. He had a suit fitting to get to and I was going to get pampered like a princess.

“Guys…. I’m not sure….”

“Oh shush! Come on!” I sighed then and slowly stepped out from the bathroom. This was the last dress they had for me to try on. I had only been here for about thirty minutes and I had already tired on over ten dresses. Going off their faces on this one though, I think we were done with dresses.

“Oh my….”

“Honey… Yes.” I laughed a bit then looking down. Slightly puffy with a slit on the left side where you could see the silver heels underneath and my freshly shaven legs. It was held up by one strap on my right side with the clasp hidden underneath a fabric rose. It was glitter and silks and a dress fit for a princess with deep reds and blacks. One of the fitters came up and finished zipping it up on me. It was honestly still loose.

“And the perfect size… No Alterations needed….” I nodded and looked in the mirrors at the end. I couldn’t believe it. This was really me in this dress and we hadn’t even done my hair or makeup yet. I saw him peek around me and he was smiling.

We had only gone to the store long enough to pick up all the dresses once ardyn confirmed the color with them. I could feel them playing with my hair while we talked about everything going on. They had worked with vivian when she was making Luna’s dress. They were worried about her like everyone but they trusted in the oracle. It was amazing to hear honestly. Finally though They told me to open my eyes and stand up. I stood up and let them lead me to the mirror.

“Honey…. You’re going to kill him.”

“I can only hope so.” I muttered before I opened my eyes.

It was twenty minutes till five. Ravus had come back to the hotel with me to escort Skylar. He was worried about us being attacked on the way to the party it seemed. I saw the stylish coming down as we walked in and he smiled.

Dark red gown moved with her perfectly, black lace gloves covering those perfect hands, nails a deep red to match the dress and my own color. Those gorgeous brown eyes brought out by expert makeup. Her silky hair done in a loose braided crown leading to a curled tail on one side being held by a ruby butterfly clip. I could barely breathe. I knew those lips though and those eyes. She looked up once she hit the bottom step and I couldn’t help but smile as the blush hit me.

“I hope it’s the right color….” I nodded then and gently reached out to touch her. She let me and I could feel us shaking.

As we entered, young Men and women were waiting to greet and take bags and coats. Ardyn gave his coat to a young man waiting and another came forward with a smile. They were all wearing black and white suits with a sylleblossom pinned to the front.

“Yes please.”

“Names?”

“Lady Skylar Annaliese and Chancellor Izunia. In that order please.” The young man nodded and Ardyn got my hand again gently. I shifted closer then trying to smile and not show how nervous I was.

“I’m a familiar Face… I want to let them see you.. But I’ll be damned if they’re going to touch.” I laughed then as we walked forward. The main door opened and those not dancing looked up.

“Lady Skylar Annalise and her Escort, Chancellor Izunia!” He led me down then and I saw people whispering to each other. I was so close to panicking. We reached the bottom and an older woman came forward giving him a small smile. Ardyn turned on the charm then.

I came back down and our lips just barely met before we went back to normal and kept going around. I was so dizzy but it wasn’t from the dancing. I was so in love with this man it was insane. I knew so much about him now. His fears and weaknesses, his troubled past and his nightmares for the future. All these people in this room though… All they saw was the chancellor, a self absorbed egotistical man ruling the empire under the emperor. He was the enemy… but not to me. I saw someone I’m pretty sure even ardyn forgot existed inside… I saw the healer in those eyes. I saw the true Ardyn…. And I loved him.

I hardly realized I was about to cry until he reached up.

“Skylar…?” I smiled then.

“I love you…” He smiled then and I felt him wipe a tear away.

“I love you too…. So damn much skylar…” I laughed a bit as I came back to reality. The song was over. He smiled then and slowly walked with me out of there. We went down the hall to a balcony and I heard him close the door. I just tired to breathe and not let any tears fall. I didn’t want to mess up the makeup.

“It’s waterproof you know.” I laughed then and looked back. He was smiling. He walked forward then and I went right into his arms. I couldn’t help it. He hugged me tightly then.

“Skylar… What’s wrong…?”

“Nothing… I’m just…..” I choked then and He sank down with me onto a bench. I couldn’t do it. This was too much at once and I was scared to follow where this would lead me.

“Can’t. I’m running in heels.” I hung up then and took off holding my dress up off the cobbled street. I got down the stairs and past the way to the haunted painting and soon took another flight down. They were right in front of me.

“Noctis!” He turned then and I saw the shock. I didn’t give him time to register at all before I hugged him tightly.

“S-Skylar!?” I nodded then trying to hold the tears back.

“You… wow. I know who they were talking about now. We heard about a fire lady with some imperials…. It was you?”

“Yes…” I mumbled. He hugged me back then.

“What’s wrong…?”

“I’m scared…. I don’t know what to do….” I couldn’t stop them then. I heard prompto gasp then and soon Noctis made me let go. I tried to hide them but it was hard.

“Ok… We need to sit… Come on… don’t mess up that makeup hon… you look too good for that.”

“It’s waterproof…” They nodded and soon I sat with them at a table. Gladio was next to me and gently hugged me.

“What’s going you so scared hon?”

“No! Gods No….. He….. He can’t…..” I looked back down then. I had been too quick to defend him.

“..... He’s not a bad man…. There’s someone in there that I get to see and I love him…. I know a lot about him…. He’s damaged…. He’s scarred and Damaged and careful… but I got past those walls and he got past mine…. Now we’re at the last one and…. I want to let him in. He asked me to go to Niflheim with him… to live with him…. Possibly even marry him….!” I choked then crumpling in half as I sobbed. I could see it now. We would say I do and things wouldn’t change…. It would still be like it is now and I’d see that smile every morning when I woke up without fearing he’ll leave me. He’d be mine.

I couldn’t take that. I couldn’t take how scared I was of happiness that I was ready to run again. That was until I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked and Noctis was there next to me in an extra chair.. He was gently smiling and soon hugged me tightly.

“Skylar…. I’m risking everything for what you’ve got… so if one of us can have it… It’ll make all of this worth it.” I gasped then and he made me look him in the eyes.

“I’m not ever going to get to marry luna… let alone see her again…. But you’ve got love right here staring you in the face and I’ll be damned if I’m going to let you run from it again.” He pulled me up then and the other nodded. Ignis came up then and smiled.

“I know at some point I thought I could be the one you’d be saying yes to…. But fate is odd. So keep our numbers…. Stay in contact if you can… If you ever come home… Find us.” I nodded then and prompto smiled.

“He better have gotten a photo before you started crying.” I shook my head then and he shrugged before getting one.

“This works too…. Don’t forget us sis ok? I’ll have lots of photos for you to see next time.”

“Promise?” He nodded then and hugged me tightly.

“I’ll send you this one tonight…. Ok?” I nodded then before gladio came up. He hugged me tightly and soon made me look at him.

“You keep training. Never stop… He tries to hurt you… Use it. Stay safe skylar…. I’m not going to be there to pull you out from under dead monsters….” I nodded and it reminded me.

“Prom!” he looked up and I smiled.

“Take care of damien for me ok…?” He beamed then.

“No problem!!!” I smiled then.

“You guys are the best friends I could have ever been stranded with….” They laughed then and Noctis got my shoulder.

“Come on Fire queen…. We’ll walk you back.” I nodded then and gently got his hand.

“I won’t forget you boys….”

“Don’t…. And this isn’t goodbye… you’ll see us again.” I nodded then and slowly we headed back.

As Promised, Ardyn was waiting outside. He stopped when he saw all of us and I knew he was worried. Noctis walked forward with Gladio at his side and my hand in his. Slowly though I let him go and got Ardyn’s. Noctis nodded and looked at him.

“Hurt her and you better pray we don’t find out…. She’s someone special to us all…. So treat her right Ardyn….” Gladio nodded then.

“Makes the smackdown we gave titan seem like child’s play for sure.” Ardyn smiled then and nodded.

“Understood, your majesty…. I will treat her with all the respect a queen deserves…. Thank you.” The boys nodded then and I smiled.

“See you…”

“See you Skylar. And don’t worry about home. We’ve got it. You take care of you.” I nodded then and smiled.

“I trust you idiots… now you better go! Ravus is here!”

“Whoa what!?” They seemed a bit panicked and quickly ran. Ardyn laughed then and soon got both of my hands.

“So I take it….”

“I’m coming home with you…. I’m still scared to leave home behind but…. I’ve got you… and home is where your heart is…. So I guess I’m not really leaving it… Maybe I just found a new… more permanent home.” He smiled then and nodded.

“I promise…. I will be by your side Forevermore skylar.” I smiled back then and gripped his hands tightly.

“I like the sound of that Ardyn…” He gave me such a gentle look then as he got into his pocket.

“Then let’s make it official…. I was going to ask you later tonight but… Now seems like the right time.” He pulled out a box then and I felt my heart do a flip. He opened it carefully and pulled out a silver chain. In the middle was a ring. Silver with a black opal in the center surrounded by small diamonds. I gently examined it as he got a wistful smile.

“I’ve had this ring for a long time… it was to be given to my original queen…. But she wasn't the one it was truly meant for.” He opened the chain then and I felt him slide it around my neck.

“As you wear this, remember this promise. I will be there for you always… you are the one I love and I will never leave you….” I felt him lock it on me and I gently kissed him.

“I trust you…. I love you too ardyn…. More than you will ever know.” He looked into my eyes then and it was all there. He didn’t have to say a word more. Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy - 6th December in the HP Secret Santa

The secret santa who requested this wanted to remain anonymous and it was for Drarry with depression recovery and hurt/comfort/fluff.
