SRL here with an interesting submission for a new Splatfest to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Super Mario! This time, we yearn to find out which of Mario's main companions is the best of the bunch: does Luigi have you hooked on the brothers, are you a Star Supporter of Toad, or do you vibe best with Princess Peach? If this submission is selected by the time of the anniversary, be sure to pick a team at one of the terminals!

(Yes, I did realize too late that I used the wrong skin tone marker and made Frye's skin way too dark, 'tis the biggest problem with staying as a physical artist; also I gave her Toad's shirt from that one Mario Tennis promo art because you know why a shirtless girl in an E-10+ game wouldn't fly)

Since it will be 2025 in a few days, that means it's the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros! What would you like to see for Mario's 40th anniversary?

Well, it's all but confirmed that we'll be getting the Switch 2 some time early this year. I'd like one of the debut games to be a plot-heavy platformer in a similar vein as Super Mario Odyssey, but this time starring Mario AND Luigi. That feels like a good way to celebrate four decades of the bros.

Heck, a full blown remake of the original Super Mario Bros., but this time with cutscenes and extra levels and new mechanics? That would go pretty hard.

If we don't get that, I would love to see a free bonus game that serves as a celebration of the anniversary. My mind goes to Sega's needlessly high quality April fools gag game, "The Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog."

A ten minute animated short might be nice too. There's a lot of things they could do, just so long as we get something.

This drawing was made earlier this year since in 1983, Luigi made his TRUE appearance to assist his brother in the hit game, MARIO BROS. (His first appearance was in a Game & Watch game by the same name that came out a month before.)

Yk what'd be so cute? If to celebrate Mario's 40th this year, and celebrating year of eevee, they do the same thing as that other year that had Pikachu as Mario on cards and toys and plushes but with Eevee as Luigi instead.

we slept fitfully on the mattress pad on the floor last night, Zane snored like crazy and we realized Paige's mom forgot a few presents at their house, so Paige rode back with her and they didn't get back until 1:30ish. despite the not great sleep, we had a good Christmas morning - mom goes a little overboard with presents, but all of them were great. I got the 40th anniversary hardcover box set of the Alanna books, and Peyton got the 2nd and 3rd Royal Ranger books along with several other smaller things. we started reading the 3rd book on the drive home today and got several chapters in!! Peyton's "stocking" was a tool belt stuffed with shooters and Michelob Ultras, while Zane's was a tool belt with Mug root beer

my favorite thing we got was from Sav, she got us a custom book stamp set, which apparently Peyton worked with her on to plan - we went ahead and stamped our new books, and I'm excited to stamp the rest as we unpack them in the new house. I knew what Paige got Peyton since I contributed (the old Deadpool game he used to have that's hard to find) and they worked together to get me something in the same vein: Mario and Luigi Partners in Time, which I am super excited to play again once we get more settled

we hung out and had breakfast cooked by Mamaw and along with Sav played the new game we got (Ransom Notes), and then Paige started on Princess Peach Showtime, which she's playing more of as we lay in bed watching an ep of white trash show before bed. our afternoon was busy, we ended up skipping the hibachi dinner with her family to see Peyton's mom and Papa. lunch was Bucees snacks and dinner was roller food from QT. along the way we also got all three of the cats back to the house, set up Aunt Clovis's couch risers, and got to see lots of family, so it was nice despite being busy. tomorrow I have to go back to work, my first true day of the long commute. Paige is going to spend the day cleaning the cedar room and setting up the desk so we can hopefully have a moment of normalcy tomorrow night and play some Fortnite on our new internet (and she can get the skin that Peyton and I bought her, one of the few Christmas gifts we got anyone this year) we'll have to get a uhaul truck on Saturday since the weather won't be playing nice, so it's my job to look up quotes for that tomorrow, but I'm not gonna worry too much about the plan for the weekend until it gets here. let's see if the suspected attic squirrel makes an appearance (at least an aural one) in the morning...

update: the squirrel(s) did make an audible appearance, but we began to wage war, and I think we're winning thus far. some loud banging on the ceiling for a couple minutes, plus an extension cord with one of those "pest repellant" noise makers that came with the house plugged into the end and placed into the attic access, topped off by a paper towel wrapped bundle of cat shit on the attic access door has kept them quiet for at least 30 minutes. long enough for Peyton to get to sleep, but I had to get up to locate my cough meds, so hopefully they stay quiet for long enough that I can get to bed too

now that xenoblade x is coming the list of wii u exclusives is getting even shorter (at least limited to just first party and some second party. it probably gets a lot longer when you include third party. apparently it got a yokai watch just dance game in japan?)

dr. luigi (i feel like this is maybe the most likely remaining exclusive to get ported. not a hugely complex game and afaik nothing about it makes it only work on the wii u. next time nintendo does a big celebration about luigi it's coming back)

nintendo land (probably not getting ported since it's basically a wii u tech demo)

game & wario (also probably not getting ported for similar reasons)

splatoon 1 (since splatoon evolves as a series and already incorporated a lot of s1 stuff into s3 i don't think it'll get ported)

smash 4 (similar to splatoon. yeah there's smash tour and stages that ultimate doesnt have but like. how are they supposed to sell the "not everyone is here" game alongside ultimate. it's not old enough to get people to buy it from being retro or whatever like 64 and melee probably could. and brawl has subspace which would be a big selling point)

star fox zero (i havent played this but between the weird wii u focused controls--iirc the tv had a third person view and the gamepad had a first person one and you had to like. look at them both?--and the fact that people didn't seem to like this game, i doubt it'd get ported

star fox guard (it would be funny if they ported this though)

animal crossing amiibo festival (yeah ok. why not)

paper mario color splash (i remember when this came out nintendo was telling people it was a lot like splatoon. maybe they were right in the sense that it won't get ported either)

kirby and the rainbow curse (i guess this would work well in handheld and maybe decently with gyro controls docked? they could port it)

mario party 10 (wasnt the big thing about this game that one player used the gamepad and had a different gameplay experience? very wii u centric. unlikely to get ported. i mean i guess mario party just gets minigames ported anyway? i dont really play mario party. maybe they already ported all of the minigames from this game)

pushmo world (never played this series but glancing over wikipedia i guess this could get ported. intelligent systems did a few of those pushmo games. maybe they'll release a collection someday)

sports mario or whatever (i think they made one of these. maybe 2 or 3. i wasnt paying attention sorry)

wii fit u / wii party u / wii sports club (idk i never played any of these but they're technically there and i dont think they're coming back. like i feel like if anything they'd go for the more popular wii installments of those series. maybe the switch successor will have a pressure sensor under the screen so you can stand on it to use as a balance board in handheld mode. i guess that would be more like footheld mode though)

mario maker 1 mystery mushroom costumes (these were apparently not in the 3ds port)

nes light gun games - duck hunt, hogan's alley, wild gunman (these aren't on switch online. this was actually the only time they were on virtual console--they made it so that you could use the wiimote as the gun)

ds virtual console (idk why the switch doesnt have this but if gba is already behind the expansion pack ds would be too so i wouldn't get it either way lol) (it did also have wii games but that's a backwards compatibility thing so it's understandable the switch can't. mario 3d all stars and skyward sword were modified from the originals and only partly emulated and people with hacked switches have found it struggles to emulate gamecube games well. so it's definitely not getting wii games that aren't ports)

wind waker hd / twilight princess hd (not on the first list because they're already remakes) (maybe next year. nintendo likes to do zelda games every year it seems. or maybe they'll wait until the uhhh 40th anniversary in 2026? didnt it just turn 30 what the fuck. pokemon will also be 30 that year. that cant be right.)

We know 2026 is slotted with The Super Mario Bros Movie sequel. We'll just have to wait and see what 2025 has in store.

(I know this movie and game have been cooking for some time, but I would love a once a year installment that aims to psychically explode us with the sheer amount of brotherly love on screen.)
