⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 42mm | 1/1250s | f/6.3 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 12/09/2020.⁣ ⁣ Located on the ridge of a hill, overlooking the famous Nebbiolo vineyards, is a charming village called Serralunga d'Alba.⁣ ⁣ On the #LangheSightseeingTour I was expecting fellow tourists to get off the tour bus and wander round one of the best-preserved villages in the Langhe which has existed for nearly 1000 years and whose defensive curtain wall is still intact. But nobody did. 😕⁣ ⁣ It baffled me because not only are there a web of medieval streets to explore, but also because Serralunga d'Alba boasts one of the most impressive noble castles in Piedmont, distinguished by its slender structure and shape.⁣ ⁣ Like the one in Castiglione Falletto that featured in my previous post, this 14th-century castle also belonged to the Falletti family who were the most important dynasty in the Langhe. Their history was interwoven with the castle's for over 600 years!⁣ ⁣ In 1864, after the death of the last descendent, the philanthropist Giulia Falletti Colbert, the property was owned by the Opera Pia Barolo and was then acquired and restored by the Italian State in 1949, spearheaded by President Luigi Einaudi.⁣ ⁣ From the top floor of the castle, which can be only be accessed by paying for a guided tour, you have an amazing view of the Langhe area and, on a clear day, the Alps.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ Take a train from Torino Porta Susa or Torino Lingotto to Alba, and then take a bus to Serralunga d'Alba with 'GTT'. Search line 2172 on the GTT website for the up-to-date timetable. ⁣ ______________________________________⁣ ⁣ #SerralungadAlba #LangheRoeroMonferrato #Ig_Cuneo #Italia #Italy #TLPicks #WanderLust #FindItLiveIt #DoYouTravel #Tv_Travel #Rsa_Rural #Rsa_Outdoors #VivoPiemonte #Piedmont #VisitPiemonte #Ig_Piemonte #YallersPiemonte #LandscapePhotography #Ig_Italy #YallersItalia #ILikeItaly #BeMoreItalian #EnjoyItalyResponsibly #ShadesOfGreen #LaDolceVita #SlowTravel #SlowTourism #TravelGreen #Italy_Trip (at Serralunga d'Alba) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFNgadJFchd/?igshid=124yq9s5q3tlg

#luigivico #winery #luigivicowinery . . . Buon pomeriggio 🥂🥂🥂👍 . . . 📷@johnmaiolo #johnbarolo 📍Turin . . #nebbiolo #barbaresco #roero #brachetto #langhe #barolo #dolcetto #picoftheday #beatifull #nature #tobetasted #wines #winetime🍷 #winetasting #winemoments #winepic #wineoftheday #winecellar #winelovers🍷 #winelover #winestagram #wineinstagram #wineblog #wineblogger (presso Serralunga d'Alba) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFFUXphHxXQ/?igshid=1af7phklydese

THURSDAY NIGHT WINE TASTING 7-9 PM
Put your party dress on and get out of the house! We have a mixed bag of fun planned for you tonight. Our pal Joe will be pouring a variety of flavors to tantalize your taste buds from Frederick Wildman & Sons.
Plus cheese from Bedford Cheese Shop and bread from She-Wolf Bakery!
LUIGI BAUDANA 'WHITE DRAGON' LANGHE BIANCO 2016 (PIEDMONT, ITALY)
One of the best kept secrets in Langhe, Luigi Baudana is one of the last garagiste estates in Langhe, with just 4 quality hectares. For over thirty years, Luigi Baudana and his wife Fiorina carried on the long family tradition of wine making in Serralunga d'Alba. But without heirs to take it over, they had to make the difficult decision to sell, luckily to one of our favorite families in Piemonte. The Vajras now work alongside Baudana to learn his philosophy for this unique location. The 'White Dragon' is a blend of mostly Chardonnay with a smattering of Sauvignon, Riesling and Nascetta blended in. Chardonnay haters take note; Jancis Robinson wrote this: "It was described as a Chardonnay but - and I hope the great god of Chardonnay will forgive me for writing this - it tasted much more interesting. It was so aromatic that I was convinced there was some Riesling in it." And of course she was right! A lovely wine from a lovely place by lovely people... And that label? It was a gift from Gianni Gallo, which is "a hymn to the untamed power and strength of the wines from Serralunga d’Alba ... and life itself." $21
HATZIDAKIS SANTORINI 2016 (AEGEAN ISLANDS, GREECE)
What makes Santorini special for wine production is mainly due to the island's unique ecosystem, which is characterized by volcanic soil, strong winds, rare rainfalls, hot and dry summers but also due to the very important fact that the vineyards of Santorini have never been infected by Phylloxera. The old, non-irrigated vines of Santorini are trained by the growers into basket-like shapes on the soil surface in order to protect them from strong winds. They are watered by the summer night humidity that remains on the volcanic soil. What does this all mean? The bigger the struggle, the more character!100% Assyrtiko from Santorini, this wine is a classic benchmark of the variety and its homeland. A vibrant aromatic cocktail of sea-breeze freshness and citrus fruits with honeyed undertones. Bone-dry, brightly acidic with a textural mineral smokiness and a food-begging finish. Pair with fried fish or buttery potatoes, just make sure you put some fat on that plate to get the full benefit of this wine's depth. $26
FOWLES WINE 'FARM TO TABLE' 2013 SHIRAZ (VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA)
Fowles Wine is a 100% family owned winery based in the cool climate wine region of the Strathbogie Ranges, where they farm both grapes and sheep! Fowles Wine is led by Matt Fowles, "a former lawyer who swapped the vitriol for the vineyard". Matt is an avid food and wine man and the brains behind "Ladies who Shoot their Lunch"- the world’s first wine blended to match wild game. Shiraz has a reputation for often being a total jam basket of ripe fruit... but you might be surprised by the dark and dusty notes of this wine; ripe plum is balanced with dark cherry, chocolate, and spice notes. A bigger red for the cooler temps coming, the Fowles family says it's "served perfectly with slow-braised shoulder of lamb with onions, thyme and balsamic with a side of creamy mash"... you get the idea... time to dust off the Dutch Oven! $17
CASA MARIOL VERMUT NEGRE (CALATAYUD, SPAIN)
Have you tried this stuff yet?! It's ridiculously good. I'd approach with caution, because many of our customers who've discovered this delicious dark vermouth can't stop drinking it. Casa Mariol's Vermut Negre is produced from 100 percent Macabeu grapes fermented in stainless steel at a low temperature to preserve freshness of flavor and vibrant fruit notes. While at the same time a neutral grape spirit, also made from Macabeu grapes, is macerated with over 160 different botanicals. The ingredients include green walnuts, thyme, rosemary, orange peel, cardamom and wormwood. The rest, in true vermouth fashion, are kept a secret. After the wine is fermented and blended, it spends 6 months in Solera System. The result is a perfectly spiced and rich vermouth. We love serving traditionally in the afternoon on ice with seltzer, an orange slice, and an olive (see recipe on bottle for details) but also works in bubbly for brunch or helps make a mean Negroni or Manhattan when the sun goes down. Come taste! $25

Greater Diversity at G.D. Vajra (Wine Spectator)
G.D.Vajra, the Barolo producer known for its Bricco delle Viole and Raverabottlings, recently added to its vineyard holdings in Piedmont. In the spring of 2018, it purchased 2.5 acreseach of Coste di Rose and neighboring Boschetti, plus a quarter-acre of Preda, parcels it had been renting since 2015. This brings the total holdings at Vajrato nearly 150 acres. The Vaira family also owns the 10-acre Luigi Baudana estatein Serralunga d'Alba.
I walkedthe vineyards with Giuseppe Vaira on my recent visit to the region. The steep,east-facing exposure and sandy soils of Coste di Rose render one of the mostelegant Barolos in the region.
"It is a gorgeous parcel on top of thedesignation," beamed Vaira of the rows of Nebbiolo vines. "It's a very diverse vineyard from those we've farmed so far. Thetopsoil is dominated by very pure arenaria di Diano (sandstone). The elevationis lower than Bricco delle Viole, Ravera, [Luigi Baudana's] Baudana andCerretta, but enjoys wonderful fresh air. Last but not least, it is located inbetween Cannubi and Bussia. Vines are about 30 years old."
With thedeal, Vajra also acquired 37 acres of Dolcetto in the Monterustico area ofDogliani. Compared to the perfumed, elegant, black currant– and violet-scentedDolcetto Coste & Fossati 2017, the Monterustico 2017 is rich andstructured, offering flavors of black cherry and blackberry.
The 2015Barolos from Vajra will arrive in the United States in September 2019. The G.D. Vajra Barolo Albe 2015, a blend of Nebbiolo fruit from Fossati, Coste di Vergne, LaVolta and the young vines of Bricco delle Viole reveals fine purity and depthto its floral, cherry, herb, spice and tobacco flavors. At $40, it's also aterrific value for Barolo.
The debutvintage of Coste di Rose also begins with a floral aroma, the rose, strawberryand cherry notes allied to a tense, linear frame. It finishes with savorylength. Bricco delle Viole 2015 delivers its characteristic violet and blackcurrant flavors, great intensity and a mineral aftertaste. The Ravera 2015 was theleast showy of the Vajra Barolos, evoking aromas and flavors of juniper, wildthyme and black cherry. Despite its cooler and reserved feel, it's powerfuland long.
FromLuigi Baudana, the Barolo Serralunga di Serralunga 2015, from young vines inBaudana and Cerretta, is all licorice, tar, spice and smoked meat notes, with chewy tannins. The Baudana 2015 offers more cherry fruit, but also savoryelements of licorice, eucalyptus and hay on a dense, taut profile. It'scomplex, but will need 15 to 20 years to reach its peak.
TheCerretta 2015 features an intense nose of graphite, mineral, cherry and licorice.More vertical than the Baudana, it has fine tension on the long finish.
All theBarolos in both cellars, Vajra and Baudana, underwent 55 days of maceration onthe skins. "We thought long skin contact didn't work as well in warmer vintages[like 2015] because of the tannins," explained Vaira. "But what we found wasless impact on the wine in its early life and more layers later."
However,Vaira added that they are very careful when pressing the wines. "We don't use anypress wine in warmer years."
The 2015Barolos from both G.D. Vajra and Luigi Baudana show impressive potential interms of quality and longevity.
