Alright so, let's just go over all the other box art legendaries, (also bal) generation 1 doesn't have any BALs so it isn't here
Lugia, Ho-oh and suicune apparently,
Tumblr media
Suicunes hair being a aurora Borealis is something that shouldn't of been removed and is really cool, though even without it, suicune still looks pretty cool. Slyveon does the organic ribbins better though. The shiny takes away the bit of differing colour that suicune needs to work.
Lugia just unsettles me, it has human hands that it uses to fly. With designs as simple as this, not much of an shiny change is necessary. I don't mind it being pink.
I like Ho-oh being a phoenix, its a really cool idea that it feels like they just wasted it. It doesn't look like a phoenix and having green on it was an odd design choice. The shiny does make it look it is fire
Next is Kyogore, Rayquaza, and Groudon
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
(I'm only adding omega ruby and alpha sapphire because it atleast has a different form of BAL, unlike heart gold and soul silver)
There's nothing I can really comment on with these three. Ground lizard, water whale and flying Chinese dragon. Shiny, Kyogore and Groudon look ugly but shiny Raquaza is one of the best shinies I've ever seen. The primal forms feels so good and give them the thing that they were missing and their shinies fix their past mistakes.
Next is Diagla, Palkia, and Giratina
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They all got neck.
Oddly enough my favourite part of origin fome Giratina is the mouthpiece it has. Giratina being literal Satan is so stupid its funny.
Shiny Diagla looks rusting metal. Shiny Palkia looks almost the exact same. Shiny Giratina is pretty good, like it was corrupted and now is good.
Next is Zekrom, Kyurem, and Reshiram
Tumblr media
Zekrom has a drill tail. Black and blue compliment each other so well. Sadly it's shiny doesn't change much. Zekrom has an aura of power that you do not want to experience yourself
Reshiram being a blue eyes white dragon is one of the biggest trolls pokemon has ever done and i love it. I admit that Reshiram looks cool with how smoky it is on the cover, however the 3d model does not do it justice. The 3d model looks like the arms aren't even arms. The shiny is just Reshiram but with some jewellery.
Kyurem black and Kyurem white are almost the exact same however I still prefer Kyurem black because again, black and blue go so well with each other. This legendary trio all being a fragment of one pokemon is such a cool concept if they didn't just forget about what happens when you fuse all three. Kyurem black shiny being green was... a choice. Kyurem white shiny delves deeper in the fire typing of Reshiram which is a nice touch but doesn't change much.
Next is Yveltal and Xerneas
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Xerneas is just a rainbow deer and is a nice and simple design that we haven't had for a BAL till that gen.
Yveltal... why the hands for wings again??? Being able to kill all life on earth is also so damn dark for a children's game. It's just kirby lore all over again.
Skipping gen 7 for last means that Zacian and Zamazenta are next
(I've apparently reached the limit for pictures so it'll be a bit harder to properly analyse the next two games)
Zacian is a blue wolf with a sword
Zamazenta is a red wolf with a big mane
Neither have much going for them or against them. Their shinies are them but more blue and more pink. Their names mean the magenta and the cyan so just ok.
Second last is Koraidon and Miraidon
Since their names are so similar it's easy to mix up the two. Which is annoying. Somehow koriadons neck sack is fine for me but Miraidons is unsettling.
Miraidon (the robot one) has a certain lifelessness that makes it hard to like, purple and yellow just doesn't do it for me. The shiny is not very good, going from the body being purple to just a normal sheet of metal isn't great.
Koriadon (the orange one) is just the beast form of a orange cat. There's nothing going on in that head except samwic. Its face is so expressive and I love him. His shiny being burnt coals is great idea that probably came from the same guy that did lunala and Rayquazas shinies.
Finally, my pride and joys; Solgaleo, Necrozma, and Lunala
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SolgaLEO name being a pun on it being a lion is alright I guess. It is just a big lion that can open portals (*cough* lion from Steven Universe *cough*) that you can easily ride on. Given that it is the last evolution for cosmog, it looks nothing like either of its previous stages. I don't like solgaleo much and I despise his shiny even more.
Lunala is so good in so many ways. First, it looks like the perfect natural progression from cosmog, it even has the hints of cosmoem with the edge of her wings. She looks exactly like the night sky with the little bits of white though out her wings. When I think of moon beast I think of something like her. The shiny being a fucking blood moon is awesome idea that I hope whoever thought of it got promoted. She is the peak mystery and elegance. Something I haven't brought up till now is the cries (mostly I don't want to go through all the cries as well). Her cry is one where if you hear it in while going for a night stroll though the woods, you'd shit yourself and run. Simplicity is one of the greatest strengths of BALs that should be explored more. While we can bully other BALs names, we should also be bullying Lunala's name because God it's bad. The one thing that holds it back is the name.
I am not going to be doing ultra necrozma nor normal necrozma as they technically aren't BALs, which is why I didn't do mega Rayquaza.
Some how they made solgaleo worse. Dusk mane necrozma (DMN) so bad, why is it constantly naruto running. They made an ok pokemon worse by having arms. At least the shiny isn't as bad I guess but God even having a good one couldn't have saved that monstrosity.
Finally one of the best pokemon yet, Dawn Wings Necrozma. (DWN)
DWN is the moon when you see it during the day. The whole form reeks of being corrupted and controlled unwillingly. Having a little headpiece and a little vest is the best thing game freak could have done to make it feel unearthly. This time the arms don't feel as off-putting as DMN and feel natural. I fully believe that GF designed DWN then went "oh shit we need to design solgaleos form with these things fuck fuck fuck" the cry is so close to being the exact same but isn't. It is perfection. It's lunalas cry but sounds hurt and in pain. It even steps up its game with the name. But the one thing that holds it back is the God. Damn. Shiny. If the shiny was more red than hot pink it would have been the perfect BAL. Hell, making the lunala part of it black and the necrozma part more blue would be better.
Side note: necrozmas story is everything I like about Kyurems story except GF weren't a coward showing us their true form
Lunala and Dawn wings necrozma are the two best box art legendary designs and I will die on this hill

Ah, Lugia...I wish to take in the sight of you. Please let me admire your beauty as I wished for all those years ago. I come to you without my capture rings or anything else, just myself. -@Jirarudan
Tumblr media
What you did, what you attempted to do, is something that cannot be forgiven lightly…
However, it is true that humans can change….Minds and hearts can be mended and reborn. The crimes you committed are in the past and I hope that is where they will remain. If you come to me with pure intentions, I will grant what you wish–But know that my place is to maintain balance–Through whatever measures need be taken. I can offer you little more than my time, however; I hope that will suffice. @jirarudan

Emerald with Fresh Eyes
I had defeated Emerald for the first time since not playing it... gosh. I can’t even say when. Maybe when I was around 10? And nostalgia wise, I always ranked it high. And it was to a point that with ORAS, they were a mixed bag due to being more of an RS remake than not including Emerald like HGSS did. And to me, the Delta ep wasn’t enjoyable at all.
And now playing it with fresh eyes....
Yeah I couldn’t rank Emerald super high on my list anymore. I still love this region, I love the evil teams, love a lot of the pokemon, and Emerald I’d play over RS any day; but it wasn’t all that great narratively. And some choices in it were just weird choices to make.
Like, Wallace being the Champion of Hoenn... I don’t get why they did this. I was pretty much ten levels beneath him (he’s a few levels under 60 and I was around 50) and destroyed him with two pokemon alone essentially. He was not hard at all. And it’s also weird to me as they have two Water masters in the League. Idk, it was a weird choice that I didn’t like in Emerald, even back in the day of childhood it bothered me.
And the space station attack from Magma, replaying it now, did feel forced in and random. And it made Magma out to be desperate and spiteful wanting to blow up the region because bAd GuY!!!! Could’ve worked tweaking the dialogue, using the satilite to try and find Groudon, but otherwise, as cool as it was to join Steven in saving the space station, yeah that can be cut out. Especially since you don’t really get anything new with Steven himself.
And the climax of Emerald, as much as I love seeing Rayquaza tell Groudon and Kyogre off, it does take you out a bit knowing that you have to leave seeing Groudon and Kyogre duking it out to get fetch Rayquaza.
So a lot of this I can get cutting/not including in ORAS. Why they opted more for RS base than Emerald. I honestly wouldn’t want a full blown Emerald remake anymore. So I can now better get ORAS and the choices they made.
Though, its still not so ideal to me. And it has made me realize what would’ve been for my definitive Hoenn remake: having ORAS be like HGSS. At the core, the base is RS, but they include Emerald aspects, which not only would’ve really amp up the version differences. Something between Emerald and ORAS would’ve made these solid remakes and the best Hoenn to play. So, if we ever get that 2nd Hoenn remake, here’s what I’m hoping for.
- Keep Steven as Champion. He’s a lot harder and better than Wallace. A Champion I’d look forward to fighting far more.
- Take a page from BW and do version exclusive Water gym leaders. I felt bad for Juan getting side lined so hard in ORAS. Have Juan/Wallace as optional bosses, maybe you can face them if you get into contests or something.
- Keep the Emerald gym leader teams. Those were a lot harder.
- Amp up the version differences by working off what Emerald included for the two evil teams, specifically having it be that Magma’s hide out is in the volcano. Aqua can stay in the cove near Lilycove. Magma would make more sense to be in a volcano, and it could’ve been cooler to see Groudon crawling out of a volcano and roaring at the sky to amp up the sunlight.
- Optionally, do allow us to clash against both evil teams, just that depending on your version, you see more Magma or Aqua. And maybe to see the Emerald climax better done, you don’t see Aqua/Magma awakening the other legendary. But you do get to see the two clash, and could get to witness Rayquaza coming down on its own to yell at them. And based on your version, one goes under the sea and into hiding, the other continues to the Cave of Origins for you to face and maybe catch. Rayquaza and the other can be high leveled post game legendaries to catch. If HGSS can allow you to catch both Lugia and Ho-oh, I don’t see why not here.
- Just cut Brendan/May. They don’t know what to do with them personality wise, they aren’t appealing rivals, they were a blank slate in RSE and easy to forget about, or so overly friendly and chummy in ORAS I wanted to sign a restraining order. They just need to stop with opposite gender player character being your rival. They don’t know what to do personality wise as they’re not supposed to have one. It makes them bland as characters. Even worse when they push “you’re good friends agenda!” Like, no we’re not. I barely know them. Why are they trying to join me into the Champion’s room?! Trying to ride off my victory? Yeah, I don’t like them. Not in RSE. Definitely not in ORAS. If we need another rival outside Wally, why not make use of the son from the family you fight outside Mauville? Fighting his family and hearing about him, I was curious about this guy. And he starts his journey a little before you, that would’ve made him more challenging as he’d be higher than you by a few levels. I’d love to truly see him and not have him be a random trainer to fight in Victory Road.
- Battle Frontier. I personally don’t care if it comes back or not, I play more for the story and the journey; but everyone has been wanting it back. Bring it back.
- Walking pokemon please and thank you. And not the BS walking pokemon we got in BDSP. Just stick to what you did in HGSS or Let’s Go. Those were the best takes of it. Big bonus if some we can ride.
- Don’t bring back the Delta Episode. I personally didn’t enjoy it. I didn’t like Zinnia. I don’t like space so riding Rayquaza into space did nothing for me. And I didn’t care for Pokemon trying to build up the idea that there’s a multiverse. To me it felt like they were trying to work off what LoZ was setting up for their multiple time lines and it just didn’t work for me.
- Expand the dex. The biggest thing that’s driving me crazy with these remakes is a reluctancy to expand the dex and match with the old dex. And the old dex isn’t perfect. If they want pokemon to ideally match the region, why not include more that can fit into it? It’d be a nice surprise for players to see the dex shaken up and encourage us to see what else was added to the region. And some really need it. Like Sinnoh remake really should’ve taken the chance to add in more fires. Even Platinum knew that was an issue and added a few more and allowed you to get Ponyta earlier. And I know, too much water, but I wouldn’t have minded more water pokemon added to Hoenn, when you’re surfing and getting random encounters, it gets old seeing nothing but Wingull and Tentacool lines. Give me more seafaring pokemon to mix it up at least.
- Speaking of which, can we just keep with overworld encounters cause omg. Random encounters (specifically with Zubut) were driving me up the wall. I made use of repels like crazy. I missed Let’s Go dynamic of overworld encounters so I can avoid pokemon and have a smoother journey. And when you have a small number of pokemon in an area, well, its no surprise what you’re going to get. I’d rather the overworld encounters.
So, over all, if we ever get another Hoenn remake, this is what I would hope for as my definitive Hoenn to play. An ideal mixture of ORAS and Emerald. ORAS did make some solid improvements, and brought in nice features, but you also really miss Emerald. And it would’ve been better incorporating aspects of Emerald. It really could’ve joined BW for having the most version differences if they included aspects of Emerald (like Magma base being in a volcano, giving you a mini different story element to go through).
Thank you for coming to my TED Talks.

satoshi’s Bonds, Connections, & Bro - dyns with the gods he’s met  :
houou.     this is the god with which satoshi has the strongest yet strangest bond with, it being the first god he saw & it continuing to reappear in his life throughout his journey, such as before his setting off to hoenn & when he decided to start from zero & received a rainbow feather & eventually ended up battling it.     he primarily thinks of it as kind of a background presence that he trusts to keep watch of him, even if it’s nowhere near where he actually is, in spirit   ( except it really is always keeping watch of him, especially when he’s in mortal danger, as it did with reviving him through the pokemon’s tears after he got caught in the literal crossfire of mew & mewtwo’s battle ) .
mewtwo.     satoshi just wants it to be happy & be able to trust people.     he does feel discomforted by the fact that he’ll never truly remember what happened the first time they met, only able to rely on mewtwo’s personal testimony, but has absolutely no hard feelings for it trying to kill him, most gods have.     satoshi is never letting gou talk about mewtwo to the rest of the sakuragi institute & he will fight the fellow with his bare hands before allowing gou to catch it.
lugia.     they saved the world together & had half a battle the next time they ran into each other, lugia gave him a ride along with gou.     there is a lingering connection from the first time they met, & lugia is the god whose aura satoshi connects with the easiest.
celebi.     satoshi considers the first one he met to be a friend to this day, he & yukinari bonded with it & he grew incredibly attached & was absolutely heartbroken when he thought it would die, seeing it fly off to join the other celebi feeling bittersweet.     he didn’t get to develop much of a friendship with the second celebi he met, but any time he remembers it hopes it’s doing okay, wondering if it’s friends with the aforementioned celebi.
latias.     he really bonded with it in the short time they spent together & considers it a friend to this day, even if they’ve not met in some time.
latios.     while he didn’t share the same closeness with latios, he was still devastated when, as far as anyone present was aware, it died saving alto mare, so you can imagine the shock when he saw tobias at the sinnoh league with a latios on his team.     priorities shifted thinking too hard about it to the very bottom of the list & he only got to thinking about it one night about a month later, after which he contacted tobias as soon as he could to have an exchange that essentially went “was that latios with you” “yeah” “i thought it was dead” “long story, it’s better now” “cool” .
mew.     satoshi thinks of it kind of like you’d think of an overly curious kitten that you occasionally see running around your neighborhood stealing trinkets & snacks & sniffing like, everything.     he thinks it’s sweet & fun & has literally risked his life for it & wouldn’t hesitate to do it again, but he does feel like it’s maybe a little naive & doesn’t realize some things have serious consequences, which gives him slight worry that, if it weren’t as powerful as it is, it could end up in some serious trouble.     because of this he has mixed feelings about gou wanting to catch mew, not only because he knows it & has gone through a lot with it, but also because he believes it to be susceptible to getting into the wrong hands   ( he doesn’t believe gou’s hands are the wrong ones, necessarily, but he does keep a wary eye on the mew project ) .     he does also have a sliver of a similar bond to houou with mew due to one of satoshi’s ancestors hundreds years past receiving blessings from it that manifested in wave guidance  ;     the blessing has been passed down the bloodline & from hanako’s side of the family to satoshi.
darkrai.     satoshi thinks very highly of it in terms of strong pokemon, which he always vibes with, & is appreciative of its efforts in defending alamos town.     he does believe it’s misunderstood, & he tries to negate any of the unwarranted mistrust directed at it when issues arise with it as a suspect.
agnome.     the two share a connection through their wills as much as aura.     though they separated after the galaxy gang was first supposedly disbanded, that connection has still remained in the background, not enough to tie them together as before, not unless the god itself reaches out to him, but enough that if satoshi thinks about it enough, he can still feel that connection.
dialga & palkia.     satoshi wanting pokemon to stop having destructive fights that endanger civilians that didn’t ask to be a part of their crossfire aside …     he wholeheartedly believes they deserve better & was very pissed on their behalves when the galaxy gang wanted to abuse their power, & he is thankful to them for their assistance when arceus came to michina, & even more so to dialga for sending him & the others back in time to help fix things.
giratina.     he sympathizes with it &, despite how things started out with it, really does hope it can be at peace in its dimension.     certainly, if he ever ends up there again, satoshi knows where to look for help.
shaymin.     despite their highly rocky start, satoshi grew really attached to shaymin & it broke his heart to have to part with it so soon after he finally started liking it.     he respects the rascal & hopes it’s doing okay with the other shaymin.
arceus.     as with giratina, sympathizes with it, & hopes that the past can be forgiven for the sake of the future & that it doesn’t let human error ever create such a rift between it & humanity again.     he hopes that arceus coming down to help him & his friends alongside champion shirona stop the remnants of the galaxy gang is a sign that it’s grown past some of what’s happened, &, if ever there were any debts between them in satoshi’s saving arceus’ life, then surely that evened out the score.
victini.     satoshi became incredibly attached to it, especially with their resonating auras allowing satoshi to see into victini’s past & feel its emotions, & he was devastated & heartbroken when he thought he’d failed to save it despite promising to take victini to see the sea one day.     he was overjoyed to see it alive & well &, even if their parting was bittersweet for satoshi, he hopes it’s doing okay & has a reminder stashed away somewhere to visit it if he ever passes through that part of unova again.
zekrom.     he’s zekrom approved, sharing a similar connection as with agnome, only through conceptual Ideals.     the connection never truly passed into a tangible area, but satoshi felt it nonetheless when he first arrived in unova, believing that, if they were to properly meet, he’d feel that connection again, much stronger.
keldeo.     he shares a bond with it, growing attached & protective of it very early on, feeling a duty to help it face its fears in order to save the other sacred swordsmen, that protectiveness winning out against said duty when he saw just how terrified keldeo was.     he feels nothing less than pride in its overcoming its fear & becoming proper sacred swordsman material.
meloetta.     satoshi grew very attached in the time they spent together, admiring both its voice & its strength, feeling anger not unlike one he would with his own pokemon at it being captured to abuse its power.
hoopa.     he cares for that rascal so, so much, & he wholeheartedly wants nothing but the best for it & hopes it never has to go through something like what had been happening for like a century ever again.     sometimes he swears he hears a portal open just around the corner, a small impish giggle echoing in the empty space when satoshi goes to look.
volcanion.     he still has some strong opinions about it, but it grew on him, & the knowledge that volcanion truly cares about the other pokemon & wants to protect those that can’t defend themselves just as much as he does made putting up with it much easier.     he hopes that it continues to be able to protect the pokemon in that valley & to keep an eye out for magearna.
zygarde.     while satoshi didn’t get quite as close to squishy as eureka, he still considers it to have been as much part of the squad as any of the other pokemon, holding it high regard as zygarde, & he hopes that gekkouga is keeping an eye on it.
kapu-kokeko.     he has a bond with it, the combative god having taken interest in him & giving him a z-ring & a temporary electric z to go with it & luring him into the woods to battle, fueling a rivalry that would culminate in the exhibition match of the manalo conference.     it kept a curious eye on him &, in a time of urgency for another universe, sent him over to assist, be it to test him or trusting already that satoshi would be able to handle it.     the majority of satoshi’s time training in the alola region was building up to getting to battle kapu-kokeko on equal footing, something he believes to have succeeded at.     satoshi still wants to battle it again some day.
kapu-tetefu, kapu-bulul, kapu-rehire.     though he didn’t make as strong a connection with the other island guardians, he still feels thankful for all that they have done in helping him progress in both training & in times of need.
solgaleo.     needless to say, satoshi very much thinks of it as one of his own, like the pokemon that he watched hatch & took care of as they treated him like a parent.     even after evolving into a solgaleo, satoshi can’t help but think of it as that tiny hoshigumo-chan that was entrusted to him by the other solgaleo & the lunala so seemingly long ago.     it will always be a part of his family.

Ships Passing in the Night and Sailing Together Until Morning - Chapter 2
On the Subject of Caring
Summary: Goh isn't as accustomed to caring about another person as perhaps he should be, so he's not quite ready for some of the pitfalls of it. Pikachu tries to communicate. Koharu will support her childhood friend whether he wants it or not.
[Read on Ao3!]
[<Prev. Chapter] [Next Chapter>]
-
Goh’s heart dropped to his stomach the same moment Satoshi’s entire body dropped into Gengar’s arms. He almost appeared to fold in on himself, legs swaying back and forth as he fell forward nauseatingly.
“Satoshi.”
He called, just hoping to know what was happening at all. Satoshi didn’t respond. Eyes— when had those dark patches under them grown so large?— threatened to shut and Goh begged them not to.
“Satoshi!”
Goh leaned forward, calling harder, more desperate. Satoshi blinked for a moment, eyes widening as Goh’s voice rose. Just as quickly, as though being weighed down, his eyelids began to shut again.
“Satoshi!”
Over and over he called his name, but Satoshi had long since gone slack in Gengar’s arms, unresponsive. Regardless, Goh’s lips seemed to move on their own, meaningless syllables being pushed out near mechanically. Dimly, he registered Pikachu scampering over to Satoshi’s side, licking his cheek to no response.
Dozens of disconnected thoughts and ideas popped into Goh’s mind and disappeared just as quickly, fireworks of memories and concepts, fueled by fear and adrenaline.
“Satoshi.”
His voice cracked and finally fell silent, though his lips still traced the shapes. Replacing the sound of his name was Goh’s heartbeat in his ears.
He was beginning to feel numb, and then-
A sharp jolt of electricity coursed through his body.
“Pika! Pikapi pi-pika!”
Small paws reached around Goh’s leg, holding him tightly. Goh looked down in a daze, perhaps from the electricity, perhaps from the fear, meeting Pikachu’s worried gaze.
“Pikapi pikachu pi-pika! Chu? Chu pika pika pikapi, chuka?” Pikachu squeaked out.
And this was complete nonsense, Goh knew, a mix of fear and adrenaline and sheer stupidity, but somehow… he felt as though Pikachu was talking to him. Asking him, no- begging him for help. Maybe it was something in Pikachu’s eyes or his grip on Goh’s leg tightening. Maybe he was just projecting his own feelings onto the pokemon, maybe he had finally lost it-
But he could have sworn that in that moment he heard what Pikachu was saying. That somehow, someway, Pikachu was asking him, “Please, take care of my Satoshi.”
Was that what Satoshi had meant then, about Lugia?
Goh shook his head. There was no time for panic or pokemon human communication right now. He had to help Satoshi, and he had to do it now.
“Don’t worry, Pikachu.” Goh replied, though more for his sake than Pikachu’s. “I- I can do this. I promise… I’ll take care of him.”
Or at least he hoped he could. A few stray memories of emergency preparedness lessons and ‘what to do’s’ from his parents drifted through his mind, just out of reach.
“Pulse, I need to check for a pulse, " w as the first solid thought Goh could come up with. Which of course made the whole situation feel so much scarier, but then the idea of not checking and not knowing felt so much worse.
Goh reached for Satoshi’s wrist, holding it firmly in his hand. His thumb pressed lightly against Satoshi’s skin.
Goh felt his entire body relax as he registered the steady pounding of Satoshi’s pulse.
“Good, that’s good.”
Hesitantly, Goh leaned in closer, straining his ear.
“He’s still breathing.” He said aloud, which merited a few relieved pokemon noises.
As Gengar shifted its weight in order to get a better grip on the boy, Satoshi’s bangs fell in front of his closed eyes. Goh reached up subconsciously, brushing them aside. As his fingers brushed against uncomfortably warm skin, a natural conclusion snapped together in his mind.
“You’re sick, aren’t you Satoshi?”
Satoshi, obviously, did not respond, though Goh seemed satisfied with his conclusion.
On one hand, having any sort of idea of the situation was relieving. On the other, Goh’s heart was still racing and the anxiety of not knowing what to do was only gaining stronger by the moment.
The last thing he wanted was to do something wrong and risk-
No. He refused to finish the thought.
“Bun? Nybuny?” It was Hibunny’s turn to pull at Goh’s leg.
Goh bent down to the worried pokemon, Pikachu standing by its side.
“It’s alright, Hibunny. Pikachu too. Satoshi’s gonna be fine… he- he’s gonna be fine.” His voice wavered slightly as he spoke. Hibunny shook its head, reaching a paw up to swipe at Goh’s cheek.
Goh mirrored the action, finding his own fingers damp with tears.
Of course he was crying.
Goh reached forward, scooping up Hibunny in one arm, finding Pikachu crawling up the other to rest on his shoulder.
Hibunny rubbed it’s head against Goh’s gently, it’s soft fur drying Goh’s still slowly flowing tears.
“Come on, crying won’t help anything…” Goh muttered to himself. “Help… right.”
Help. Of course. He had to call for help.
“Rotom!” Goh called out, rubbing at his eyes with the back of one hand as he fished his phone out of his sweater pocket with the other. “Call someone from the lab!”
“Okay!” The slightly static voice called out with energy, but there was a hint more emotion than there usually was. Fear? “Who would you like me to call?”
“I- I don’t- Please, just call someone- anyone from the labs!”
“Okay!”
Goh cleared his throat, dragging his palm against his cheeks in an effort to disguise the tear tracks. Not that anyone was around to see, beyond the pokemon of course.
“…calling-! …calling-! …call-“
Someone picked up.
“Hello, Goh. What’s going on?”
Kikuna’s voice came through the line, curious and soft.
“I need help,” Was all Goh could manage to choke out at first.
Kikuna’s voice grew stronger, more attentive.
“What’s wrong? What do you need help with?”
And Goh hated how weak and childish he sounded, but for the sake of Satoshi he knew he had to cast those feelings away.
“I-It’s Satoshi. He- he passed out and I can’t get him to wake up and I think he’s sick and I can’t get us back to the lab and-“ Hibunny pressed its face against Goh’s again, and he fell silent for a moment. Calm down, it seemed to be saying. Take a breath, it silently encouraged.
So Goh did, a slow inhale followed by a shaky exhale.
“Please, come help,” He managed to say.
“Alright,” Kikuna’s voice was solid, something for Goh to hold on to. “Don’t worry, I’m coming to pick you up right now. Have your rotom send me your location, alright?”
Goh nodded.
“A-alright. Thank you.”
“Good job.” Kikuna said. Her voice grew quieter as she turned away from the phone to say something to someone else in the room. Her voice grew loud enough for Goh to hear as she yelled something that sounded suspiciously like, “Renji, I’m borrowing your car!”
Goh took another deep breath before speaking again.
“Rotom, send our location to Kikuna, please.”
“Okay!” It replied.
“Got it!” Kikuna’s voice called out, sounding a bit further away now. “Goh, I’m heading out the door right now, okay? I’m heading down the steps, I’m going to get in Renji’s car and drive right to pick you up. Do you want me to stay on the line with you?”
Goh shook his head.
“No, no it’s fine. I-I’m fine.”
“Are you sure?”
Goh could hear the slam of a car door as Kikuna climbed inside.
“Yeah… Yeah. I’ll be waiting.”
“Alright. If anything happens, call.”
And with that, Kikuna hung up.
So now it was time to wait.
Pikachu’s cheeks crackled with small bursts of electricity, sending tiny, harmless sparks at Goh. It would’ve been a lot more interesting to study the why and how had Goh not been so worried. Instead he placed a hand gently on Pikachu’s head, stroking him with light moments.
A car drove by in the distance, and Gengar pulled Satoshi in closer.
Goh sighed, a weary smile forming on his face.
“You really care about Satoshi now, huh?”
Gengar nodded, taking care so as not to disturb the sleeping Satoshi, though both knew he was out cold.
Goh nodded as well, soon turning into a quick bow.
“Sorry. For what I said about you cursing him and all. It wasn’t your fault. None of it, not what’s happening now or before or what your trainer did- none of it was your fault.”
Gengar stood silent for a moment, then nodded, it’s frown rotating to a smile for a brief moment.
Pikachu whined a bit, reaching towards Satoshi.
“Do you wanna get down, Pikachu?”
Pikachu shook his head.
“Pikaaa. Pikapi pika pika pi. Chu pikapa, pikapika pikapi?”
Goh bit his lip, trying to figure a response that would somehow console Pikachu despite not fully understanding what he was saying. He reached forward, almost on instinct, to hold Satoshi’s hand in his own. It was limp and warm and wholly uncomfortable and Goh held it tight. This seemed to calm Pikachu, though Goh couldn’t be sure.
Before he could stress too much about it, the honk of a car horn rang out, startling everyone in the area.
To Goh’s relief, Kikuna had arrived.
Kikuna pushed the car door open forcefully, hard enough for it to swing as far as it could and bounce back to where it had been. It would’ve hit her as she exited had she not run out so quickly.
She was taking this seriously, Goh immediately realized, and wasn’t sure if that fact was meant to be terrifying or comforting.
She presented an air of something resembling confidence, yet so much sharper, almost daring anyone to stop her before she reached her goal. Despite this, her voice and expression softened when she bent down to talk to Goh, still frozen so neatly in place.
“Come on, Goh, let’s take Satoshi back to the labs.”
Goh hesitated for a moment.
“S-shouldn’t we take him to a doctor or something first?” He asked, voice having lost its spark.
Kindly, far too kindly for Goh’s liking, Kikuna replied.
“Luckily for us, there was a Nurse Joy visiting the labs when you called me, and since she has experience with Satoshi in particular, she’s waiting for us there. It’ll be a lot faster this way.”
Goh’s stomach turned at the idea that any part of this situation could be referred to as lucky.
“Let’s get going, alright?”
Goh felt himself tense. He wanted to agree, he knew that was best and that they had to go, but part of him just wanted to stay frozen here forever.
“Goh,” Kikuna’s voice was gentle, holding him as though he was about to shatter, and Goh thought he might be sick, “I need you to let go of Satoshi for me, okay? I need to pick him up and put him in the car, and I can’t do that if you’re holding him.”
Weakly, Goh nodded, and painfully let his hand go, as lifeless as Satoshi’s.
“Good, good. Thank you.”
Kikuna turned to Gengar, thanking it as well as it passed off Satoshi to her. She handled the weight well, yet the sight wasn’t comforting to Goh in the slightest.
“I don’t think I can fit all the people and pokemon in my car.” Kikuna noted idly, merely thinking to herself.
“I could walk-“ Goh heard himself offer without believing it. Thankfully, Kikuna shot that idea down immediately.
“No, you’re riding with me, alright?”
The words were said forcefully, but with such a gentle air. It was a contradiction, yet one that Goh felt compelled to comply with. He nodded.
Gengar looked back and forth between the humans, then promptly melted into darkness, merging with Goh’s shadow.
Kikuna stood blankly for a moment.
“Well, that solves that problem. Come on, we don’t want to leave Joy waiting, right?”
With Hibunny in his arms and Pikachu still clinging to his shoulder, Goh ducked into the backseat of a car that decidedly wasn’t Kikuna’s, but that she had driven here regardless.
The car sputtered to life, and Kikuna took off down the road.
Each turn tossed Goh around, the ride going too fast and yet not getting there quickly enough.
Satoshi sat strapped into the seat next to him, Hibunny sitting between them with Pikachu clinging on to Goh’s shoulder. Goh tried not to think about how Pikachu would probably prefer to be on Satoshi’s shoulder right now. He tried not to think of anything at all, letting the street signs and sidewalks they passed become the meaningless blurs they should’ve been.
Kikuna said nothing, and neither did Goh.
The car’s steady hum was the only sound for Goh to listen to, interrupted occasionally by a soft ‘pika’ in his ear.
“Pipikachu, chu.”
It almost felt like Pikachu was whispering to him, trying to reassure him, but Goh dismissed the thought.
“Quit projecting onto the pokemon, Goh.” He thought to himself, half mouthing them without a sound escaping.
Pikachu squeaked some more, and Goh let the likely meaningless sounds run through his mind until they arrived back at the labs.
Everything became a blur once Goh opened the car door.
Adults talking above his head, Satoshi getting passed around until he wasn’t sure where he had gone. Someone was pushing him into one room or another, someone was speaking to him, but his senses seemed to have died. It was a scribble of sounds and sights he refused to process, until everything had finally died down, and the world had gone much too silent and still.
He sat on the couch in the lab’s centre room, both alone and lonely. The ever present electric hum of the computers accompanied him as best they could, yet Goh felt open, exposed.
He was looking at nothing. To the outside observer it may have appeared as though he was focused in on the floorboards, but Goh was decidedly looking at nothing. The nothing that sat between his eyes and the wooden floor. The type that turned everything twisty and not quite right when he looked at it for too long. That strange sort of always present nothing.
It wasn’t an interesting sight, but nothing always has the added benefit of being such. There was nothing associated with nothing, only the absence of things.
So for Goh right then, that sounded about right.
He was decidedly not thinking about Satoshi. He was not worrying if Satoshi was okay, on account of knowing full well that Satoshi’s welfare was completely independent of how much he worried, and doing so would only be counterproductive.
So he was not worrying. Not in the slightest.
He told himself internally that he could stand up and leave, but his legs made no effort to do so. It was for the best anyway. If he had gone to the park, Satoshi’s pokemon would ask him where Satoshi was, and then he would have started worrying. He was not sitting outside the dorm room’s door, because the unintelligible whispering of the adults within would only put him on edge. He was not looking around the empty room, he was not letting the absence of one person make him feel lonely, he was not worrying, he was fine .
He was looking at nothing.
He was looking at nothing so hard that he had completely missed the second person entering the room.
“Hey, are you listening to me?”
Goh flinched, a voice breaking the silence in tandem with a hand breaking his personal space as it came to rest on his shoulder.
He turned abruptly to meet Koharu’s concerned eye.
“Uh…”
She shook her head.
“Can you please just tell me what’s going on? Kikuna only explained half as she was running out the door, completely dropping everything.”
Goh felt his mouth dry up at Koharu’s clear exasperation.
“I… sorry.”
Koharu sighed.
“Of course.”
He hated how resigned she sounded, annoyed yet complicit with the situation. Hoping his voice wouldn’t break, he replied.
“Satoshi… got sick. I-I don’t know why.”
Koharu nodded, relaxing slightly with the added information, though not by much.
“How sick?” She asked, though he got the feeling she already knew as much, and simply wanted to hear from him.
Goh simply stared miserably at the floor, which Koharu decided to take as an answer.
“And what about you?”
Her voice dropped to that gentler tone, one she hadn’t used with him in years.
“Fine,” Goh replied, because it would be true if he believed so for long enough.
Koharu rolled her eyes.
“You’re not fooling anyone. What’s even the point of lying like that?”
Goh’s throat felt strained as he replied.
“It’s easier. It’s stupid and complicated and hard to explain, I don’t even understand it, so why even try.”
He jammed his lips shut, waiting for Koharu’s scathing response.
Koharu paused, expression unreadable.
“Then tell me what you do understand. And we can start from there.”
It wasn’t the response Goh was expecting. Taking a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves, Goh spoke again, facing the empty space ahead of him instead of his friend.
“I’m scared.” He admitted, “This all feels weird and bad and scary and I hate it.”
His voice was quiet yet resonant through the too still air.
Koharu shook her head, sending her braid bouncing.
“You watched a person you care about pass out right in front of you with no warning, then couldn’t wake him up and had to call someone to bring him back here. Sounds scary to me. Nothing weird about it.”
“It’s not just that!” Goh added. “I just... I don’t know when it happened. When Satoshi stopped being an annoyance and turned into a person I would get this upset over. I wouldn’t have done that before...”
Koharu nodded, “Well yeah. Satoshi changed you, as a person and all. Though I can’t tell if that’s because he’s like… the second friend you ever made for more than twenty-four hours or because he’s Satoshi. ”
Goh tilted his head.
“He… changed me?”
Koharu rolled her eyes.
“If you can’t see it, that's your problem, but the Goh I knew wouldn’t be sitting with me and having this conversation if he hadn't met Satoshi.”
Goh leaned forward, eyebrows knitting together.
“D- do you think it’s a good change? Am I better now? Do you like me better changed than-“
Koharu raised a hand to give Goh a light chop on the head.
“Don’t go thinking about it too much. I was your friend before, I’m still your friend now. People change Goh. That’s just how they are. But you’re the one who’s gotta figure out how and why. More importantly, you’ve gotta figure out what you’re gonna do with that change.”
Goh didn’t move.
“If I’m better now then what part of me wasn’t good enough before... but then, If I’m not better, what didn’t I do enough of to change for the better?”
Koharu groaned.
“You’re not listening!”
Reaching to the side, she took Goh by the shoulders and turned him to face her.
“I like you for who you are, Goh, because we’re friends and I knew what I signed up for. You’re still you when you change, and I’m still gonna be your friend unless you change into an axe murderer or something. What I’m trying to get at is that you didn’t change for like four years. You just stayed inside all the time and didn’t talk to people. Now you’re doing that stuff again because of Satoshi. And making connections and being more open to new things, because of Satoshi. That’s a change. Only you can decide if it’s good or bad.”
Goh blinked.
“Well scientifically, the amount of time I’ve spent outside is better for vitamin d intake, though-“
Koharu cut him off, “Nerd.”
Goh rolled his eyes at her, appreciating the light air for a moment before it settled down into his lungs, turning heavy as he breathed out a melancholy sigh.
“You’re right. You have a habit of being right. It’s a bit annoying.”
Koharu grinned, though Goh continued without smiling.
“It’s just... change is scary. What if I don’t like the person I become?”
He looked up, turning to meet Koharu’s eyes, hoping his own didn’t look as watery as they felt.
Koharu nodded.
“I may not get half the things you say about pokemon, but that I can understand. Although, if you’re ever unhappy about how you’ve changed, you can always go back to the way you were.”
Goh paused for a moment in consideration. His life before had been busy, but felt hollow and lonely, even with Koharu to help fill the holes in his life, it still felt like the time he had spent was in some way, not enough. It was dark, cozy even, but small. Now his days were open and full of light. He couldn’t say that empty feeling was never there, but the warm complete feeling was certainly more present. He felt more complete, like with each passing day spent exploring with Satoshi, he understood him better, understood himself better. It felt wonderful.
Goh made a face.
“I wouldn’t like that at all.”
Koharu smiled, a laugh slipping out of her lips.
“Well, I think you’ve answered your own question.”
And there it was again. That nice warm complete feeling.
“Yeah. I guess I have.”
The near silence settled over them again, still not comforting but not as malicious or empty as it had been.
Koharu reached a hand out towards Goh, a softer expression on her face.
Goh shook his head.
“I’m not a little kid, Koharu. I don’t need you to hold my hand just cause I’m a little worried.”
“Geez, Goh.” Koharu chastised, shaking her head. “I know you love to act like you’re an adult and all, but you really can be quite childish.”
Keeping her hand outstretched, she continued.
“Being a kid isn’t such a bad thing, you know? You get to explore and experiment, you don’t have to know what all you’re doing with your life. It’s not a death sentence to just let yourself be a child sometimes Goh, from one kid to another.”
Goh remained silent. Without saying a word, he nodded ever so slightly, reaching up to hold Koharu’s hand.
She too stayed silent, not saying a word when something in the buildings would shift, or footsteps would echo down the now quiet halls, and Goh’s grip would tighten for a moment.
They stayed like that for a while.
When Goh went to bed that night, he found himself staring at the ceiling. There was no need to worry anymore, not with the steady snores of Satoshi below him, yet the residual anxiety remained. It was an odd sense of guilt that followed him. Despite knowing this wasn’t his fault, no one’s fault really, sometimes people just got sick, he couldn’t help but feel responsible.
His mind drifted back to the sidewalk, to Satoshi’s lifeless body, to Pikachu’s desperate squeaks.
Not for the first time, Goh fell asleep, dreaming intangibly of a warm light, encased in icy glass to protect it.

satoshi’s Bonds, Connections, & Bro - dyns with the gods he’s met  :
houou.     this is the god with which satoshi has the strongest yet strangest bond with, it being the first god he saw & it continuing to reappear in his life throughout his journey, such as before his setting off to hoenn & when he decided to start from zero & received a rainbow feather & eventually ended up battling it.     he primarily thinks of it as kind of a background presence that he trusts to keep watch of him, even if it’s nowhere near where he actually is, in spirit   ( except it really is always keeping watch of him, especially when he’s in mortal danger, as it did with reviving him through the pokemon’s tears after he got caught in the literal crossfire of mew & mewtwo’s battle ) .
mewtwo.     satoshi just wants it to be happy & be able to trust people.     he does feel discomforted by the fact that he’ll never truly remember what happened the first time they met, only able to rely on mewtwo’s personal testimony, but has absolutely no hard feelings for it trying to kill him, most gods have.     satoshi is never letting gou talk about mewtwo to the rest of the sakuragi institute & he will fight the fellow with his bare hands before allowing gou to catch it.
lugia.     they saved the world together & had half a battle the next time they ran into each other, lugia gave him a ride along with gou.     there is a lingering connection from the first time they met, & lugia is the god whose aura satoshi connects with the easiest.
celebi.     satoshi considers the first one he met to be a friend to this day, he & yukinari bonded with it & he grew incredibly attached & was absolutely heartbroken when he thought it would die, seeing it fly off to join the other celebi feeling bittersweet.     he didn’t get to develop much of a friendship with the second celebi he met, but any time he remembers it hopes it’s doing okay, wondering if it’s friends with the aforementioned celebi.
latias.     he really bonded with it in the short time they spent together & considers it a friend to this day, even if they’ve not met in some time.
latios.     while he didn’t share the same closeness with latios, he was still devastated when, as far as anyone present was aware, it died saving alto mare, so you can imagine the shock when he saw tobias at the sinnoh league with a latios on his team.     priorities shifted thinking too hard about it to the very bottom of the list & he only got to thinking about it one night about a month later, after which he contacted tobias as soon as he could to have an exchange that essentially went “was that latios with you” “yeah” “i thought it was dead” “long story, it’s better now” “cool” .
mew.     satoshi thinks of it kind of like you’d think of an overly curious kitten that you occasionally see running around your neighborhood stealing trinkets & snacks & sniffing like, everything.     he thinks it’s sweet & fun & has literally risked his life for it & wouldn’t hesitate to do it again, but he does feel like it’s maybe a little naive & doesn’t realize some things have serious consequences, which gives him slight worry that, if it weren’t as powerful as it is, it could end up in some serious trouble.     because of this he has mixed feelings about gou wanting to catch mew, not only because he knows it & has gone through a lot with it, but also because he believes it to be susceptible to getting into the wrong hands   ( he doesn’t believe gou’s hands are the wrong ones, necessarily, but he does keep a wary eye on the mew project ) .
darkrai.     satoshi thinks very highly of it in terms of strong pokemon, which he always vibes with, & is appreciative of its efforts in defending alamos town.     he does believe it’s misunderstood, & he tries to negate any of the unwarranted mistrust directed at it when issues arise with it as a suspect.
agnome.     the two share a connection through their wills as much as aura.     though they separated after the galaxy gang was first supposedly disbanded, that connection has still remained in the background, not enough to tie them together as before, not unless the god itself reaches out to him, but enough that if satoshi thinks about it enough, he can still feel that connection.
dialga & palkia.     satoshi wanting pokemon to stop having destructive fights that endanger civilians that didn’t ask to be a part of their crossfire aside ...     he wholeheartedly believes they deserve better & was very pissed on their behalves when the galaxy gang wanted to abuse their power, & he is thankful to them for their assistance when arceus came to michina, & even more so to dialga for sending him & the others back in time to help fix things.
giratina.     he sympathizes with it &, despite how things started out with it, really does hope it can be at peace in its dimension.     certainly, if he ever ends up there again, satoshi knows where to look for help.
shaymin.     despite their highly rocky start, satoshi grew really attached to shaymin & it broke his heart to have to part with it so soon after he finally started liking it.     he respects the rascal & hopes it’s doing okay with the other shaymin.
arceus.     as with giratina, sympathizes with it, & hopes that the past can be forgiven for the sake of the future & that it doesn’t let human error ever create such a rift between it & humanity again.     he hopes that arceus coming down to help him & his friends alongside champion shirona stop the remnants of the galaxy gang is a sign that it’s grown past some of what’s happened, &, if ever there were any debts between them in satoshi’s saving arceus’ life, then surely that evened out the score.
victini.     satoshi became incredibly attached to it, especially with their resonating auras allowing satoshi to see into victini’s past & feel its emotions, & he was devastated & heartbroken when he thought he’d failed to save it despite promising to take victini to see the sea one day.     he was overjoyed to see it alive & well &, even if their parting was bittersweet for satoshi, he hopes it’s doing okay & has a reminder stashed away somewhere to visit it if he ever passes through that part of unova again.
zekrom.     he’s zekrom approved, sharing a similar connection as with agnome, only through conceptual Ideals.     the connection never truly passed into a tangible area, but satoshi felt it nonetheless when he first arrived in unova, believing that, if they were to properly meet, he’d feel that connection again, much stronger.
keldeo.     he shares a bond with it, growing attached & protective of it very early on, feeling a duty to help it face its fears in order to save the other sacred swordsmen, that protectiveness winning out against said duty when he saw just how terrified keldeo was.     he feels nothing less than pride in its overcoming its fear & becoming proper sacred swordsman material.
meloetta.     satoshi grew very attached in the time they spent together, admiring both its voice & its strength, feeling anger not unlike one he would with his own pokemon at it being captured to abuse its power.
hoopa.     he cares for that rascal so, so much, & he wholeheartedly wants nothing but the best for it & hopes it never has to go through something like what had been happening for like a century ever again.     sometimes he swears he hears a portal open just around the corner, a small impish giggle echoing in the empty space when satoshi goes to look.
volcanion.     he still has some strong opinions about it, but it grew on him, & the knowledge that volcanion truly cares about the other pokemon & wants to protect those that can’t defend themselves just as much as he does made putting up with it much easier.     he hopes that it continues to be able to protect the pokemon in that valley & to keep an eye out for magearna.
zygarde.     while satoshi didn’t get quite as close to squishy as eureka, he still considers it to have been as much part of the squad as any of the other pokemon, holding it high regard as zygarde, & he hopes that gekkouga is keeping an eye on it.
kapu-kokeko.     he has a bond with it, the combative god having taken interest in him & giving him a z-ring & a temporary electric z to go with it & luring him into the woods to battle, fueling a rivalry that would culminate in the exhibition match of the manalo conference.     it kept a curious eye on him &, in a time of urgency for another universe, sent him over to assist, be it to test him or trusting already that satoshi would be able to handle it.     the majority of satoshi’s time training in the alola region was building up to getting to battle kapu-kokeko on equal footing, something he believes to have succeeded at.     satoshi still wants to battle it again some day.
kapu-tetefu, kapu-bulul, kapu-rehire.     though he didn’t make as strong a connection with the other island guardians, he still feels thankful for all that they have done in helping him progress in both training & in times of need.
solgaleo.     needless to say, satoshi very much thinks of it as one of his own, like the pokemon that he watched hatch & took care of as they treated him like a parent.     even after evolving into a solgaleo, satoshi can’t help but think of it as that tiny hoshigumo-chan that was entrusted to him by the other solgaleo & the lunala so seemingly long ago.     it will always be a part of his family.

History Wandering Among History
(Drabble of Karen and Ho-oh just hanging out, talking about the universe.)
"I didn't expect you to be so interested in this."
Karen commented watching the legendary lean in ever closer to a case of old Johto tools. He was in human form naturally eyes lit with a fascination, and wonder of a child. Multiple times he'd been reminded by Karen and security to keep his hands off the glass of the various exhibits.
The usually relaxed bird was practically spinning with bubbling excitement around every corner leaving Karen to hurry after him once he flited to the next thing. Like now as he jerked from one case over to another going right to reading the information plaque. She didn't understand, wasn't he immortal?
"Of course I'm interested. How can you not be? Can you imagine having to use this? Fascinating to think of all humans have accomplished since then. I mean this was used to wash clothing, and now there's a whole machine to do that."
"Yeah....sure...I..."
She stumbled on her words lowering her tone to ask.
"Weren't you there? When people used this? Are you reminiscing or something?"
Karen asked unsure how else to phrase it watching his face now flicker with a confusion. Then there was a pause. A small debate taking place in his mind before he took her hand puking her over to a quieter part of the museum.
"I was, my body, no, thats not accurate....look at it this way, in theory I was, but not in the way humans are."
"....you're going to have to explain some of those words."
Karen asked refusing to allow for him to simply leave it vague this time. Being dismissed was always annoying, but this was worse. When he'd allude to something, and then never bring it up again which is why she kept her eyes on him to let him know she wasn't going to let this go.
"Fine. Look some legendaries stay the same, their whole lives, same body everything. Lugia and I are about change like I've explained before. She is about souls, so she matures, has an offspring, and then eventually passes. Thay cycle does not stop. I am about rebirth right? Well I reincarnate every so often, just suddenly in flames one day, and there I am! Whole new being. I never recall anything of my past, and I never know when it'll happen sometimes because....well sometimes new things in life are spontaneous. I journal though, I journal everything. Then I go back and read them when I've relearned to read. Except it's not really me, its a new me. Its exciting and-"
He explained ignoring the mix of shock and confusion on her face. The reality of him suddenly bursting into flames and disappearing taking a moment to catch up to her. All she heard was that one day her friend may simply combust and cease to exist.
"No, no, no, wait stop I'm sorry you can just die?!"
"Combust, and boom I'm a baby again. Lugia comes and gets me, and then I go from there."
"Why are you so happy about that? What does some junk tools have to do with that?"
She huffed the emotions still reeling in her mind. He could just die. Sure anyone could anytime, but that thought only had her feeling more stirred. How could he say it so bluntly, and then be excited? Taking a step back she crossed her arms around herself taking a moment to breath and process this information before he pipped up again.
"Everything Karen....old 'junk' is everything to me. At least to this version of me. I like reading the journals, hearing about what humans I connected to, what struggles I saw them go through because the old versions of myself pained to help them. I still want humanity to be better, and I get to see that it has. Not in all ways, not all the time, but I get to read about those stories that are personal. I get to see where things ended up, and I'm excited by it. I know the humans I met in the past would be happy for the humans of today, that their efforts did something. It connects me to it even though I'm always changing."
He explained settling into a softer tone as she prickled from emotion. Hurt, something be wrote about often in his journals. He had his, but humans had theirs as well. It seemed his words though soothed something in her. The tense in her shoulders falling back some as her eyes trained back on him. She still wasn't happy, maybe he ought to be more delicate about this if brought up again.
"I'm still mad you've only now decided to tell me spontaneous combustion is a possibility I may have to witness happen to my friend....but...that's, well it's a perspective I hadn't considered. I'll leave it for now, because I know you want to get back to looking at things."
"Yes, so badly! Oh is there an old Sinnoh section!? Maybe they have one of Sanqua's statues."
He thrilled taking her hand to pull her back into the fray of history.

How does Crys rank each of Ash's traveling companions? Any she ships with her brother secretly?
She doesn’t “ship” her brother with anyone because, well, “shipping” your own family would feel weird, right? But as I wrote earlier, she kinda rooted for Goh and Sacha (Ash) to be a thing from the start =P  For the rest...
(disclaimer: my AU is kinda canon-compliance but also major changes, especially as characters do age, and age gaps can be a thing. Despite finding each other again at Indigo League, they didn’t travel all the time together after that, each of them on their own path, but of course keeping in touch and often meeting again for adventures or some times together!)  Also sorry if I slip sometimes, english names are not always automatic for me as I grew up with french dub where almost every name is translated, for trainers and Pokémons!)
Misty is one of her best friend as they met pretty young too, and they got along pretty well. She was supportive of their relationship as long as it lasted, too. (in my AU, they kinda had an off and off relationship for years before deciding to stay friends.)
Tracey is someone she also goes along well with and admires as an artist and Pokémon watcher, as she is herself quite interest about Pokemon’s behaviorism; she also spent quite some time with Ritchie in the Orange Islands (eventually even setting there for good when they grow up) so their paths crossed more than once at the time.
She enjoys May’s company as they share the same love for food, and both have a special bond to a sea guardian (Manaphy for May, Lugia for Crys).
She gets along well with Dawn, tho she doesn’t know her a lot, and Brock is like that annoying big brother figure ahah (but she still likes him dearly.)
She gets along quite well with Clemont and helped him study the Synchronicity between Greninja and Ash (in my AU, Ash do keep Greninja, and their ability is linked to Ash’s Aura Ability. Crys doesn’t have Aura, but she has a special bond with her twin and can sometimes feel the Battle Bond’s effects if she’s nearby - not a pleasant thing as it just usually results in heart’s irregular palpitations. But it helps Clemont to get more data on the phenomenom.) There are also akward moments, as Clemont has a tiiiiny crush on both of the twins XD
She enjoys Bonnie’s company, despite the huge age gap, the two have fun together and Bonnie will be excited to see Crys’ Tyrunt and will be a great help with it (Crys is at first terrified of Tyrunt; Ash gaves her the egg thinking it’ll help with her phobia of Tyrunts/Rexillius but this isn’t going too well at first).
She’s okay with Serena and encourages her on her dream, but is sometimes a bit worried about the crush she has on Ash (in my AU Serena is 10 years younger than the twins, and Kalos arc happens when Ash is around 23/24 ^^” ).
For Alola, my AU is a mix between the game and the anime (a lot more of the game, though, as i didn’t enjoy the anime that much ^^” ). She goes along well with Mallow, Lillie, Gladio and Hau, but she has trouble to be with the whole gang at once, as they are too much of an extrovert bunch for her ^^”
And for Goh, well, they kinda bond over the fact they’re both ambiverts, and he’s one of Ash’s companion she’ll spend the most time around with, and she’s happily welcoming him in their little found family, and she’s absolutly supporting of their relationship.
(aaaand sorry Unova didn’t happen in my AU so I can’t say anything on Iris or Cilan . The only characters I use in my story from that generation are Touko, and a bit Touya, Bianca and N, from the game lore ^^” )
So um sorry if that was long, and maybe it’s not exactly a “ranking” but I hope it’s alright =)

Tapu koko and lugia, basturdhusbandshipping (sorry if I missed spelled or write it wrong) Can we get more information please
Kay so fiRST OFF-
The pairing of Tapu Koko/Lugia, or Bastardhusbandshipping, originally came from my Pokémon Chat Broke fanfic on AO3.
@callacabforme had absolutely loved this line:
“AshesToAshes : i feel like Lugia and Tapu Koko have split parental supervision over me and Lugia was just passing me off to his Ex husband”
And they made a very fucking lovely fic called Split Parental Supervision, which is also the same name as the chapter. I made one after because I had gotten into the idea I should make a short little story for every chapter and I really need to get back into that.
But the premise is that Tapu Koko and Lugia got together and wed under the new moon by Arceus. Who, along with Mew, knew exactly how it was going to play down and that he was also hurting for his children in the future. And Lugia was totally Arceus’s favorite child, btw.
Both Tapu Koko and Lugia soon came to both Arceus and Mew, asking for a child to call their own. Arceus and Mew didn’t bend for quite some time until Arceus did because both Lugia and Tapu Koko we’re getting really sad and depressed about it.
Arceus ended up breaking and killing multiple galaxies, different time lines, and many laws to make Ash. Weaving in both Gods aura and a piece of their two souls into the boy.
All the while both Tapu Koko and Lugia started to resent each other and fights that shook the earth to its core wrung out. Other gods tried to help but Mew told them all to back away and let the two angry Gods wreak their havoc.
Things were said that could never be taken back, the two split a couple eons before Ash was born, but that didn’t mean they still didn’t love each other with all their beings. They stuck to their vows made to the other even when the two were broken up because they both know they couldn’t love another soul like the other.
Soon @hiddenbyfaeries joined in and made some more really fucking amazing fics about Tapu Koko/Lugia’s reaction to Ash breathing life into his body for the first time. And there’s so much more as well.
Ash finally comes to Alola and well... Tapu Koko barely interacts with Ash outside fo canon. He gave the kid the Zcrystal and Zring, taught him and his Pikachu, and left. That was enough from Tapu Koko.
But here’s the thing, Tapu Koko doesn’t know Ash is his son. It’s been a few years since his first and last glimps of his son as a very newborn baby. So it isn’t until Lugia comes to Alola.
Lugia’s was fearful for his youngest chickling. Ash was on his other fathers side of the world and Lugia was absolutely terrified that Tapu a Koko would somehow hurt Ash just to get back at Lugia. Because Ash is also Lugia’s Champion for the Orange Isles as well.
As Lugia and Ash play about with a beach ball, “Growth enrichment.” Lugia says, Tapu Koko comes creening around the corner. Angered that Lugia was back onto his island.
Lugia is cordial, for Ash’s sake mostly, but soon snaps that Tapu Koko has barely been around their fucking son.
Tapu Koko freezes and looks deeply at Ash, who’s hiding behind one of Lugia’s fins because he was almost zapped by very deadly lightning, and sees the boys Aura linking to his and Lugia’s along with how familiar Ash’s soul feels.
Guilt and shame soon floods Tapu Koko and He apologized to Ash. Ash takes the apology, but with a few grains of salt. He soon gets called in to come back to bed, for fucks sake, by Kukui who’s standing on the porch with his arms crossed but refusing to come closer to the trio.
Ash happily says good bye to Lugia, and tells him to tell his older brothers to behave and have fun, before turning to Tapu Koko and going shy and enclosed. Muttering a quick good bye before bolting up to the shack.
Tapu Koko I’m feeling a mix of absolute shame and also trying to squash the insatiable need to lean closer and feel Lugia, his old beloved ex-mates, skin. he doesn’t but says good bye, feeling his heart shatter worse than it did when Lugia left him all those Eon’s ago.
And that’s as much as I have for that pairing for now!!! I’m trying to expand on it more with little things every now and then but it’s really has become one of my most favorite ships.

satoshi’s Bonds, Connections, & Bro - dyns with the gods he’s met  :
houou  :     satoshi’s got a Bond(tm) with it, it being the first god he saw & it continuing to reappear in his life throughout his journey, like before his setting off to hoenn & when he decided to start from zero & received a rainbow feather & eventually ended up battling it  ;     he thinks of it as kind of a background presence that he trusts to keep watch of him, even if it’s nowhere near where he actually is, like in spirit kinda   ( except it really is Always keeping watch of him, especially when he’s in mortal danger, as it did with reviving him through the pokemon’s tears after he got caught in the literal crossfire of mew & mewtwo’s battle ) .
mewtwo  :     president of the mewtwo protection squad, the pokemon’s gone through so much that it doesn’t deserve & satoshi just wants it to be happy & be able to trust people  ;     absolutely no hard feelings for it trying to kill him, most gods have.
the orange archipelago bird gods  :     can i get a waffle ??? can i PLEASE get a waffle ???????     never meant to get caught up in their situation but can’t really resent them for it as they weren’t the ones entirely at fault.
lugia  :     they saved the world together & had half a battle the next time they ran into each other, lugia gave him a ride along w/ go, & satoshi had a Moment with it, where their auras resonated & satoshi exclusively heard lugia’s voice, unlike the first time when everyone could hear it  ;     they vibe.
celebi  :     considers the first one he met to be a friend to this day, he & young ookido bonded with it & satoshi grew incredibly attached & was absolutely heartbroken when he thought it would die, seeing it fly off to join the other celebi feeling bittersweet  ;     he didn’t get to develop much of a friendship with the second celebi he met, but any time he remembers it hopes it’s doing okay, wondering if it’s friends with the aforementioned celebi.
latias  :     he really bonded with it in the short time they spent together &, as with the johto celebi, still considers it a friend.
latios  :     while he didn’t share the same closeness with latios, he was still devastated when, as far as anyone present was aware, it died saving alto mare, so you can imagine the shock when he saw tobias at the sinnoh league with a latios on his team  ;     priorities shifted thinking too hard about it to the very bottom of the list & he only got to thinking about it one night about a month later, after which he contacted tobias as soon as he could to have an exchange that essentially went “was that latios with you” “yeah” “i thought it was dead” “long story, it’s better now” “cool” .
mew  :     thinks of it kind of like you’d think of an overly curious kitten that you occasionally see running around your neighborhood stealing trinkets & snacks & sniffing like, everything  ;     he thinks it’s sweet & fun & has literally risked his life for it & wouldn’t hesitate to do it again, but he does feel like it’s maybe a little naive & doesn’t realize some things have serious consequences, which gives him slight worry that, if it weren’t as powerful as it is, it could end up in some serious trouble   ( & because of that he has mixed feelings about go wanting to catch mew  ;     not only because he Knows it & has Gone Thru Some Things with it, but also because he knows it’s childishly innocent & naive ) .
darkrai  :     thinks very highly of it in terms of strong pokemon, which satoshi always vibes with, & is appreciative of its efforts in defending alamos town.
agnome  :     shares a Connection(tm) with it through their Wills  ;     though they separated after the galaxy gang was disbanded, that connection still remains in the background, not enough to tie them together as before, but enough that if he thinks about it enough, he can still feel that connection.
dialga & palkia  :     can i get a waffle ??? can i PLE ---     satoshi wanting pokemon to stop having destructive fights that endanger civilians that didn’t ask to be a part of their crossfire aside   ...   he wholeheartedly believes they deserve better & was very pissed on their behalves when the galaxy gang wanted to abuse their power & is thankful to them for their assistance when arceus came to michina, & even more so to dialga for sending him & the others back in time to help fix things.
giratina  :     sympathizes with it &, despite how things started out with it, really does hope it can be at peace in its dimension.
shaymin  :     despite their highly rocky start, satoshi grew really attached to shaymin & it broke his heart to have to part with it so soon after he finally started liking it  ;     he respects the rascal & hopes it’s doing okay with the other shaymin.
arceus  :     as with giratina, sympathizes with it, & hopes that the past can be forgiven for the sake of the future & that it doesn’t let human error ever create such a rift between it & humanity again.
victini  :     became incredibly attached to it, especially with their resonating auras allowing satoshi to see into victini’s past & feel its emotions, & was devastated & heartbroken when he thought he’d failed to save it despite promising to take victini to see the sea one day  ;     he was overjoyed to see it alive & well &, even if their parting was bittersweet for satoshi, he hopes it’s doing okay & has a reminder stashed away somewhere to visit it if he ever passes through that part of unova again.
zekrom  :     he’s zekrom approved, sharing a similar connection(tm) as with agnome, only through conceptual Ideals  ;     the connection never truly passed into a tangible area, but satoshi felt it nonetheless when he first arrived in unova, believing that, if they were to properly meet, he’d feel that connection again, much stronger.
keldeo  :     shares a Bond(tm) with it, growing attached & protective of it very early on, feeling a duty to help it face its fears in order to save the other sacred swordsmen, that protectiveness winning out against said duty when he saw just how terrified keldeo was  ;     he feels nothing less than pride in its overcoming its fear & becoming proper sacred swordsman material.
meloetta  :     grew very attached in the time they spent together, admiring both its voice & its strength, feeling anger not unlike one he would with his own pokemon at it being captured to abuse its power.
hoopa  :     he cares for that rascal so, so much, he wholeheartedly wants nothing but the best for it & hopes it never has to go through something like what had been happening for like a century ever again.
volcanion  :     he still has some strong opinions about it, but it’s grown on him, & the knowledge that volcanion truly cares about the other pokemon & wants to protect those that can’t defend themselves just as much as he does makes putting up with it much easier  ;     he hopes that it continues to be able to protect the pokemon in that valley & to keep an eye out for magearna..
zygarde  :     while he didn’t get quite as close to squishy as eureka, he still considers it to have been as much part of the squad as any of the other pokemon, holding it high regard as zygarde.
kapu - kokeko  :     has a Bond(tm) with it, it having taken interest in him & giving him a z - ring & a temporary electric z to go with it & luring him into the woods to battle  ;     it kept a curious eye on him &, in a time of urgency for another universe, sent him over to assist, be it to test him or trusting already that satoshi would be able to handle it  ;     the majority of satoshi’s time training in the alola region was building up to getting to battle kapu - kokeko on equal footing, & eventually winning when it came to ultimate z - move vs ultimate z - move.
kapu - tetefu, kapu - bulul, kapu - rehire  :     though he didn’t make as strong a connection with the other island guardians, he still feels thankful for all that they have done in helping him progress in both training & in times of need.
solgaleo  :     needless to say, he very much thinks of it as one of his own, like the pokemon that he watched hatch & took care of as they treated him like a parent ;     even after evolving into a solgaleo, satoshi can’t help but think of it as that tiny hoshigumo - chan that was entrusted to him by the other solgaleo & the lunala so seemingly long ago.

Michael in the Mainstream: Pokemon Generation I & II
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pokemon is one of the biggest media franchises on the planet since 1996, and while it’s never exactly hit the same highs as it did back in the 90s, the franchise has been going strong for over two decades regardless. So, in honor of the latest entries in the franchise, I decided to take a look back at the old generations and look at what worked and what didn’t about them, though obviously in my own style. And what better place to start than the original two generations, Generations I and II?
Let’s start with Generation I, which includes the three games that started it all – Red, Blue, and Yellow, though back in the franchise’s homeland of Japan they had Green instead of Blue (hence why we got FireRed and LeafGreen, but no WaterBlue). These are the games that launched the franchise into the stratosphere of popularity, and for a long time they were held up as the gold standard of Pokemon games, attracting a die-hard base of “fans” known as Genwunners, who would bash anything outside of the first 151 Pokemon. Lately that sort of opinion has declined, though you still get the odd person here and there whining about how newer Pokemon designs look like Digimon, which indicates that the person saying that is unfamiliar with either franchise.
But what of the games themselves? What are they like? I have long expressed distaste for the Gen I games, mostly because of my hatred of Genwunners, but ultimately my opinions on the games are a lot more mixed. I do believe that Yellow is a genuinely good game and probably how the first generation should be experienced if you really want to go back to the old games, but my opinions on Red and Blue are a bit more mixed – but, shockingly, mostly positive.
You see, here’s the thing with Pokemon games – even at their worst, they’re still fun, and Red and Blue prove that. These are impressive games for their time that had the misfortune of aging far worse than a lot of their contemporaries, mostly due to the nature of the games themselves – any sort of franchise based on collecting and battling among groups of friends is going to need a lot of polish between releases, which will inevitably leave older games in the dust, especially when each generation after would add more and more Pokemon with each new generation. But even if they haven’t aged all too well, there’s still plenty of fun to be had here, though a lot of it is not in ways the creators intended.
Let’s get the bad stuff out of the way first – the balance in this game is absolutely atrocious. There are some types that are just objectively better than others, some types are so scarce as to be utterly useless, some moves don’t work like they’re supposed to, some of the computers use moves they shouldn’t know… the game is a hot mess, to put it lightly. At points the games feel frustratingly unplayable, especially when you come up against Sabrina, the gym leader wielding the all-powerful type of Gen I, Psychic.
The more mixed parts of the game are the story and the beloved, exploitable glitches. The story here… well, there isn’t one. There’s sort of an excuse plot in place - you have to beat all the gyms, challenge the Elite Four, and battle your rival (who you can name whatever, but I’ll be referring to him by his canon name, Blue). Other than that, though? There’s not really any sort of overarching plot. You kind of just wander into situation after situation on your way to the next gym. Even the whole Team Rocket plot here is mostly just you beating them up because they prove to slightly inconvenience you at every turn. Unlike in later entries, where the player is roped into saving the world from destruction at the hands of all-powerful PokeGods. Here the plot is basically “Young boy accidentally foils the Mafia while on a walk with their pet.” It’s so hilariously simple it’s hard to totally hate it, and to be perfectly fair a lot of early RPGs had rather simplistic plots, and this was one of the first handheld RPGs, so I cut them a bit of slack here, especially seeing as we at least got Giovanni out of this.
The glitches are infamous and iconic, but even them I’m a bit mixed on. Like, I love Missingno as much as everyone else, but I think tat if you need to break a game this hard to have fun, it kind of ruins things. I feel the same way about the glitches as I do the Crissaegrim in Symphony of the Night sure, they’re cool, flashy, and powerful, but they make the game so pathetically easy from that point onwards it just isn’t that entertaining anymore.
Still, this game does excel in one area: character. There are a lot of great characters in this game, human and Pokemon. A lot of the gym leaders are absolutely iconic, and the Elite Four is mostly interesting, though I will say that they lack a lot of character compared to later Elite Fours (though he Gen III remakes ameliorated this problem). It’s pretty impressive how so much character was able to be crammed into these characters even though they are ostensibly just roadblocks on your way to the next gym.
Then there are the Pokemon. The designs in this generation are pretty simple, occasionally to a fault, but there is a reason for this: a lot of Pokemon are based on yokai or tsukumogami, both of which are pretty essential in Japanese folklore. Tsukumogami in particular are something the franchise seems to absolutely love, with the Voltorb and Magnemite lines being notable examples from this generation. Other Japanese folklore represented in this Generation include kitsune, which the Vulpix line is explicitly based on, kappas, which Golduck is inspired by, baku, which the Drowzee line represents, and so in. In fact, the entire concept of Pokemon is so entrenched in the concepts of yokai and Japanese spirits that it is endlessly amusing to see Westerners nitpicking the designs, ignoring the cultural meaning behind them. Pokemon have a variety of inspirations obviously, but the weirder you think a design is the more likely it is to have been based off of some sort of yokai.
I think the definitive Gen I experience is Yellow, which is inspired by the anime. You start off with Pikachu who follows behind you at all times, you can acquire all of the starters, the game overall feels more polished (but not overly so), and you get to fight Jessie and James. It’s a lot of fun, and it doesn’t heavily alter the story, instead adding a few neat little additions, something that would become common with third versions in the franchise. The Kanto games are a solid start to a franchise, but they definitely could have used a bit more work…
That’s where Generation II comes in.
Generation II honestly feels like what Generation I should have been like, leaving Red and Blue as the unpolished alpha, Yellow as the beta, and Gold and Silver as the full release. In fact, it kind of leaves the  second gen feeling a lot more like an expansion pack than anything else, but not in an obnoxious or bad way like a certain other game (COUGHOverwatch 2COUGH). These games are so much better in just about every conceivable way, it’s not even funny.
A lot of important series mainstays made their debut here. The biggest and best is probably the introduction of the Dark and Steel types, the latter of which really feels like it should have been in Generation 1 to begin with. Steel quickly established itself as a very defensive type, and Pokemon of that type are just naturally tough due to Steel resisting nearly every other type in the game, with it only being nerfed slightly once the games jumped to 3D. Dark on the other hand was extremely cool in concept, but a lot of the Pokemon of the type were not able to properly utilize their impressive movepools due to Dark being classified as a Special type and a lot of early Dark-types running with high physical stats.
Let me clarify real quick: prior to Generation IV, the type of the move determined whether it ran off of Physical or Special Attack, no matter how ludicrous it seemed. That means Dark moves like Bite and Fire moves like Blaze Kick ran off of the Special Attack stat despite almost always appearing on Pokemon that had much higher Physical Attack, leaving a lot of Dark-types in the dust until the Sinnoh games rolled along and balanced things. Still, this bump in usability did not stop Dark-types from being popular and beloved, with Pokemon like Umbreon, Sneasel, and Houndoom all debuting here in the land of Johto.
Speaking of new Pokemon, fewer were added this time around, only about 100, sort of fitting in with this game feeling like an expansion pack. A lot of the new Pokemon are odd and gimmicky, with strange creatures like Unown, Delibird, and Shuckle making their debut here, as well as the almighty Dunsparce. While time would be kind to some of these (Dunsparce and Shuckle in particular have gained niche uses and cult fandoms), other gimmicky Pokemon got left in the dust. Still, I do think having weird, gimmicky Pokemon adds some flavor to the world. If there’s one thing I am upset about, it’s some of the Pokemon that were cut from the game, revealed to the world in the prototype version of Gold and Silver that leaked online. We almst got a new Shellder evo that looked like Slowbro’s tail, as well as Pokemon like Lickilicky debuting two generations earlier (and with a far better design). Still, what we got is pretty impressive, and though I find Johto a tad bit vanilla, there are a lot of Pokemon I love in this generation.
Another great addition to the franchise is lore behind the Legendary Pokemon. Gen I did have a bit of lore in regards to Mew and Mewtwo if you chose to read all of the journals in Cinnabar Mansion, but the bird trio got nothing and sort of just felt like random bonus bosses than Pokemon really deserving the title of legends. In this game, every legend introduced feels legendary. Entei, Raikou, Suicune, Ho-Oh, and Lugia all have fascinating lore behind them, and while they don’t play a major part in the story or factor in to Team Rocket’s plans (save for Suicune in Crystal, who has its own subplot), it showed that even this early on they were working on making the legendaries feel bigger and more impressive to the point they deserved their title as legends.
Then of course there are the new additions to gameplay and collecting that helped really make the franchise shine. The introduction of held items is one of the most significant; now there were even more ways to improve your standing in a battle! Give your mon a berry, they’ll eat it when their health gets low! This feature would be expanded on in later games, but its start here introduced a whole new world of possibilities. There was also the splitting of the Special stat into Special Attack and Special Defense a choice that helped balance the games and not completely overpower the Psychic type. And speaking of, Type distribution was quite a bit better in these games, though the new types Steel and Dark as well as Ghost and Dragon were still fairly underutilized and rare.
Then there is the introduction of gender and breeding, which allowed players to get new Pokemon by leaving two Pokemon in the same egg group in a day care together. This not only allowed for the introduction of new baby Pokemon (which are largely useless and Pokedex filler if I’m being honest), but it gave the transforming blob of jello Ditto a new lease on life, as it could breed with absolutely ANYTHING, even some genderless Pokemon. Finally, we have the introduction of shiny Pokemon, Pokemon that had a different coloration than normal Pokemon and that almost surely existed to show off the power of the Game Boy Color. Back in Generation II, shinies were guaranteed to have perfect IVs of some sort or another to make their rarity more worthwhile, but this was scrapped after this gen. Still, there is nothing cooler than having that fabulous Pokemon with its incredible sparkle pop up while you’re roaming the wild, and nothing sadder than realizing you don’t have any balls to catch it.
The story here is also improved, which is a plus. A rarity for Pokemon games going forward, these games were true sequels to the originals, taking place a few years after the events of the Gen I games, and so the plot concerns the player getting roped in to not only stopping the remnants of Team Rocket trying to rise to power yet again, but also fighting off a mysterious rival named Silver, all while trying to complete the gym challenge. The stakes are a bit higher this time, but not overly so, and the plot definitely feels bigger and more important, with their being a sense of “I have to stop Team Rocket or something bad could happen” rather than “Ugh, these guys are blocking the way to the next gym, guess I better get rid of them.” And if that’s not enough, this has one of the more impressive post-games for the series… for its time. Much has been made of the late, great Satoru Iwata’s impressive cramming of the entirety of Kanto into the game, and you won’t hear me say that for the time these games came out what he did was impressive.
The thing is, this accomplishment has aged about as well as the games the Kanto region debuted in. Gen II’s version of Kanto has a very poor level curve, meaning you can basically steamroll through most of the gyms, and a lot of areas are blocked off, gone, or cut down. While it is cool to see all these places two years after the original games, it’s not nearly as fun when you’re crushing underleveled Pokemon and you can’t access Cerulean Cave or the legendary birds. When you finally acquire all the badges though, you get to head to Mt. Silver and make your way up to one of the definitive bonus bosses of the franchise – Red, the player character of the original games. He’s a pretty tough opponent, and the game seems to lean towards making Yellow the true canon game as Red has all three starters plus Pikachu,
There’s not much else to say, as there isn’t too much negative to say about the Johto region or the games. The definitive version is, of course, Crystal, as it has a bit of extra story and polish to it and even let you play as a girl for the first time, and though there are aspects that the remakes of these games would improve on, the Generation II games are actually extremely solid and a lot of fun to play to this day, even if they haven’t yet achieved optimal balance for Pokemon. At the very least, they’re a lot more fun and playable than the Gen I games.
It’s pretty undeniable that the first two generations put Pokemon on a pretty solid path of progression and started the franchise off with a bang. There was really nowhere to go from here but up, and boy oh boy did they ever go up from here.

Mon: 1057 Tue: 400 Wed: 0 Thu: 0 Fri: 0 Sat: 868 Sun: 0 2325 words total
Sooo, I suppose it’s about time I did my Post-NaNo Writeup, huh?
Last week fell a bit flat due to a combination of vacation and travel difficulties.  That and I was definitely feeling a bit burnt out. There’s no getting around the fact that this year was inferior to last year’s NaNo.  The need to overhaul large chunks of the outline combined with my far lower confidence going into the end of Book 2 made for a rather rough writing experience, and I frequently got stuck.
I should say that it was still probably worth it though?  I mean, it’s not as if I would have figured out any of that crap without forcing myself to jump into the deep end, even if I floundered a bit.
So, to keep things positive, let’s look at the good that came out of this NaNo:
Way more time to fit Lugia’s full arc
Lexx has way more complexity than he had before
Far better setup for the checkmate arc
The former commander finally almost makes sense (also he finally has a name lol)
The finale is way less out of nowhere and gets some real buildup
Lots of miscellaneous side characters get fun moments they didn’t have before
And probably a lot of other things that I’m forgetting
So yeah, a bit of a mixed bag, this November, but here’s hoping it makes for an easier 2020.  Now to buckle down and force myself to get past the agony that is 43, lol.

Be sure to tag the players whose characters YOU want more cues to interact with, and repost, don’t reblog! Feel free to add or remove sections as you see fit. Template here.
Mun name: Kusa OOC Contact: IM (or like my starter call and I’ll message you), Discord (on ask/request)
Tumblr media
Who the heck is my muse anyway:
Newest member of the Indigo E4. Magician on the side/for funz. Secret phantom thief. Disaster magnet. A fucking nerdlet.
Points of interest:
Appearance: It ain’t Will if he ain’t wearing his mask/dressing like he’s going to a costume party. Pretty tall and fit with a naturally curvy figure. Couldn’t bench press a large stick. Very fair skin that burns easily. The lilac blue color of his eyes can be seen faintly through the whites of his mask upon close inspection.
The First Elite: He’s the first Elite Johtonians/Kantonians face, and is thus the weakest of the 4 + Lance. However, he is also weaker than both the 8th Gym Leaders of the Indigo League (Clair & Green) when they choose to fight at full power. This power discrepancy makes him feel a need to constantly reaffirm (be it to himself or others) his worthiness of being an Elite.
Budding Psychic Master: His skill with Psychic types is enough that he has already been granted the title of Master in his Type, and he already has secretly unlocked a lot of his own brand of destructive Psychic powers. Talented as he is, he still has a long way to go to perfect his skill and lots more potential to realize.
Secret Identities: A runaway whose village was wiped off the map to make room for Johto’s Safari Zone. A phantom thief that uses his psychic powers to steal and expose evidence of corrupt, untouchable criminals. An unknowing descendant of a dead clan of Psychics. And many more. Tl;dr: He is never who he appears to be to most people.
What they’ve been up to recently:
By default, Will is always looking for new ways to further improve both his powers and his Trainer skills. And by night he is trying to find and expose those criminals that have ascended above the law, though that same law is still trying to hunt him down. In his free time, he continues his hobby of treasure hunting and exploring, always excited about the possibility of finding new Pokemon, items, or adventures. Due to his job as an Elite (and the first Elite at that), he doesn’t have nearly as much free time as he used to.
Soon, once his thread with Sabrina is underway, he’ll also take an interest in discovering the secrets of the dead clan he apparently descends from.
Where to find them:
Indigo Plateau: It’s his workplace, so he kinda has to be there most of the time. All Trainers are guaranteed to meet and fight Will, so he gets to meet lots of new people daily. Since he is the one of the E4 that fights the most Trainers, you can also often catch him in the Plateau’s Pokemon Center.
Johto/Kanto: Will can be found anywhere in Johto/Kanto, whether it be on business from the League to take care of some issue or just to explore. He especially loves to explore the Lake of Rage/Mahogany Town area during peak rainy/flood season.
Whirl Islands: Will frequents the depths of Whirl Islands in order to pay respect to its resident Legendary, Lugia. He has never seen the bird himself, but he is able to sense its presence at the bottom of the ocean. He relates to the stories of Lugia’s alienating power and losing its home and literally just wants to give it some kind of company. He doesn’t really do anything while he’s here. He just sits quietly, thinks, stares down at the waterfall, etc.
Literally ANYWHERE: Will, thanks to Xatu, can Teleport anywhere in the world he’s visited, which as a former world traveller is a lot. Anywhere he hasn’t visited, he usually can just Teleport near its general location and walk/fly there. As a naturally curious explorer, he’ll especially gravitate towards mysterious areas (eg Solaceon Ruins) or places that offer new experiences (eg a new Cafe in Kalos or a festival going on in Unova).
Current plans:
I got something set up with fireredrules’ Red with some hijinks regarding one of Will’s little phantom thief operations gone wrong.
I also have something set up with infragments’ Sabrina regarding Will exploring his clan ancestry with her.
And I also have a fun FE AU verse thread going on with tulog’s Caitlin.
And then systematrical’s Gold is having a doodle fight with Will.
I may be forgetting someone so if I am then I’m sorry and I’m not purposely leaving anybody off this!
Desired interactions:
Wishlist is here
In addition to that, I’d say I’m up for misadventure-type threads, threads where he meets new people and maybe is able to help them in some way (or vice versa), and anything exploring the weird or the mythical or the mysterious, etc. Will is very aware that there is a lot of spoopy and inexplicable stuff out there, and outside Ghosts, he’s very curious about it. It also allows for great fun with going wild with hc’s!
In general, he needs more close friends, as in friends who actually know some of his secrets and can help him out with just a thoughtful ear. I’d also love for him to hang out with other League members (any region but especially Johto & Kanto). He also does have his personal issues regarding his perceived inadequacy as an Elite, some personal fears regarding his powers, etc. that I’ve been wanting to rp. Though, those would take more build up.
If you have an idea for something tho, feel free to throw it at me in an OOC ask or IM! Even if we can’t come up with a plot, I’m always game for throwing hc’s around for good fun.
Offered interactions:
Well, as a friendly explorer-type, Will can often be found anywhere that’s needed. So he can always bump into anybody and let whatever whirlwind the other muse is caught up in sweep em both up.
Also, if you feel like making them go on any kind of adventure, supernatural hijinks or no, that’s kind of Will’s thing. He can very easily sweep people up into his OWN shenanigans, which often involve anything from strange ruins to mishaps with his own Psychic powers.
Finally, he does have a vigilante alter ego. He can prove to either be a formidable foe to muses that come up against him, or he can maybe get mixed up with a civilian in some silly mistake he didn’t mean to. It’d really all depend on the muse and what you want. He’s decently flexible.
Current open post/s:
N/A (I suck at opens)
Anything else?:
Can’t think of much else to add rn that isn’t covered in my rules or about, so, yeah. As always, anybody who wishes to interact can like my starter call (which is really more of a plotting call since I can’t write starters without plotting) or IM me!

The Pokemon Expansion Pass Is Not As Bad As You Think
Tumblr media
Pokemon Sword and Shield’s New Expansion Packs Leave Fanbase Polarized But Has History Always Been Kind?
By: Nay Holland
First thing’s first. Happy New Year everyone! It’s been a crazy and eventful year for Lost Summer Dayz and 2020 is about to get even more insane. I know I’m currently doing the equivalent of walking on hot Lego bricks while barefoot, but I felt like I needed at least a week to really gather my thoughts.
But no! No I do not think that the Expansion Pass is Game Freak’s way of robbing us fans! I also think that it is necessary for this to happen so we can fully appreciate a developer who has learned so much from their mistakes in the past!
To catch those unaware up to speed, Nintendo released a Pokemon Direct on the 9th of January. Those who woke up to catch the news were met with a bevy of information, highlighting the game plan for Game Freak’s famed IP for the course of 2020. If you missed out on the broadcast, the Direct can be viewed here for all the information you would need.
youtube
One of the first thing to notice is that the like to dislike ratio is sitting pretty right now.
Tumblr media
Another elephant I’ll shoo out of the room real fast is the surprise and highly welcome announcement of an HD remaster for the first two Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX!
The game releases in March but the demo is currently available at the time of writing. Considering I’ve always wanted to try to Mystery Dungeon games, this was news I both was not expecting and news I will embrace with open arms. Definitely look for coverage in the future as I give my own thoughts from a PMD greenhorn!
Tumblr media
Now that the Phanpy has left the room, it’s time to take on the Gigantimax Copperajah that has made his home in the building lobby.
Tumblr media
The focus of the Pokemon Direct was to showcase the two new additions to the Galar region. There’s the Isle of Armor which looks like it would take place right at home in Alola and Hoenn with its coastal environments. There’s also the second area, The Crown Tundra, which looks more akin to the harsh hailstorm and mountainous peaks of Northern Galar. Both of these new locations house their own unique Pokemon, both new and old, rounding out to over 200 Pokemon.
The catch? Each expansion area costs $15. This makes for a total of $30 for both areas and their respective Pokemon.
Tumblr media
Although obtaining access to these Pokemon are free, via trading with other trainers or transporting them from other Pokemon games via Pokemon Home, reactions to this news have been mixed. A common complaint I’ve seen on social media is the cost of the game plus the expansion pass and how it correlates to previous Pokemon games. Their argument is that in the past, the base game for Pokemon were $30 USD and the third version which was more “complete” was also $30, which made it $60 altogether.
With the new expansion, the base game for Sword and Shield is $60 and the expansion, being $30, makes the game $90. Some even go so far as to compare Game Freak to EA with this business decision.
Tumblr media
I’m sure we’ve seen this lovely image floating around...
I’m here to counter these points with my own opinion as to why I feel this is a perfect decision for Game Freak to embrace the DLC/Expansion model rather than rely on an archaic method of Pokemon distribution.
Tumblr media
Our story starts as early as Generation 1 with versions Red and Blue. Since the very beginning, each game had version exclusives depending on what version you owned. As would be tradition moving forward, Red and Blue was followed with a third game, Yellow.
While the “third game” in the series would serve as a way to acquire some of the version exclusives, the selling point of Yellow was meant to capitalize on the success of the Pokemon anime. This can be attributed by the Pikachu who follows behind you and the name of the anime protagonist as a possible selection when you name your character. There’s also the inclusion of Jessie and James as the rivals for this version.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Generation 2 was when the “Third version following the two main versions” formula was cemented. With Gold and Silver having their version exclusives once again, Crystal provided quality of life adjustments yet again.
It made it easier to catch both of the cover legendaries, Ho-Oh and Lugia, by making them available in Crystal albeit as optional legendaries. The cover legendary, which was previously an optional legendary in Gold and Silver, could also be seen as quality of life as you could catch Suicune in a traditional Pokemon battle rather than chase it, alongside Entei and Raikou, all over Johto. The largest addition which would go on to be a staple for future Pokemon games, including remakes, was the option to play as a girl.
Tumblr media
Pokemon Yellow and Crystal were both meant to provide quality of life changes that cartridge based games needed. Before there was an option to simply update an existing game with patches, these third versions were vital to add features into already existing generations. The third generation posed the first problem that Game Freak faced when it came to transferring Pokemon from different generations.
Up until this point, the transfer of Pokemon between all six games were made possible with link cables. Pokemon can be traded to and from Generation 1 and Generation 2 so long as the Pokemon existed in Generation 1 and didn’t learn any moves that existed in Generation 2 easily enough.
Tumblr media
Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire introduced Generation 3 and it was called the Advanced Generation for a reason. It was on entirely new hardware, so the data used to transfer Pokemon from the Game Boy and Game Boy Color era was incompatible with the Game Boy Advance Pokemon games.
Tumblr media
This is where we hit our first instance of “All Pokemon from existing games are not available in a Pokemon game.” Outside of special Pokemon events that distributed Pokemon, there was no legal way to attain all of the beloved Pokemon from Generation 1 and 2.
Savvy Pokemon Trainers at the time who had access to cheating devices like a Gameshark, quickly realized, however, that hidden in the game were all of the Pokemon from previous games. Data for all 386 Pokemon up to that point were included yet at the time only 200 Pokemon could be attained between both Ruby and Sapphire. That meant almost half of the Pokedex was lost in the void and this complete dex would be dubbed the National Dex.
Tumblr media
Where are the 186 Pokemon that was missing from this game!? Why did Game Freak lie and not include all the Pokemon in Ruby and Sapphire??? Where’s my <insert favorite> HERE!?!?
Some, not all, of these questions were answered in a game that not many people expected back then.
Tumblr media
A year after the release of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, Pokemon Colosseum was released for the Nintendo Gamecube in 2004. While praised for it being a full-fledged Pokemon adventure in 3D, some of the selling points for this game was the ability to catch Johto Pokemon. From the very beginning you have access to an Espeon and Umbreon. Shortly afterward you have the chance to catch the Gen 2 starters albeit its secondary evolution with Quilava, Bayleef, and Croconaw. Throughout the game you also have chances to catch a rogues’ gallery of various exclusive Pokemon, which leads to the chance to acquire Ho-Oh at the tail end of the journey.
After completing Colosseum, only then were you able to transfer your Pokemon from the game to Ruby and Sapphire. This was only possible with the usage of a special link cable that was meant to connect your Game Boy Advance to your Gamecube. Not only did you need to own a full priced Pokemon game and play it to completion, but to reap your rewards you needed an extra peripheral device. Even at this point, you were missing a sizable chunk of the Pokemon needed to complete the National Dex at the time.
Tumblr media
However, later on that year, a blessing would be granted to patient Pokemon Trainers. The release of the first ever Pokemon remakes, Fire Red and Leaf Green, were released in September. Finally, all 150 Generation 1 Pokemon were able to be captured and transferred to and from Generation 3.
Tumblr media
The Johto or Generation 2 Pokemon were a different type of beast however.
Combined with the obtainable Pokemon in Colosseum and FRLG, there were still a sizable amount of Pokemon missing from Gen 2. While you could catch the three legendary dogs from Generation 2, it was still far easier to do so in Colosseum. The only way to acquire Lugia and Ho-Oh in Fire Red and Leaf Green, outside of hacking the event in-game, was through a special event. This meant Colosseum was still an important piece to the puzzle as Ho-Oh was a guaranteed encounter in that game.
Tumblr media
Okay, so Ho-Oh was at least accessible in one other game, thus just about rounding out the obtainable legendaries. But what of Lugia and the others?
Enter Pokemon Emerald, a full two years after the release of Ruby and Sapphire!
Tumblr media
The coveted “third version” of Gen 3 provided some changes to the story. Rather than Team Magma or Team Aqua being the hero and villain depending on the version, both teams were the major villains and Rayquaza, who was an optional legendary prior, is now a central legendary in Emerald. Sounds familiar to Crystal?
On top of both Kyogre and Groudon being accessible in this game, it was also possible to catch a sizable missing chunk of the Gen 2 Pokemon as well as making it easier to catch the Lati twins (As Latios and Latias were only available, in the wild, depending on which version you had)
That’s great! But can you catch Lugia?
Nope, because the final piece to this puzzle, the final corner of the Generation 3 Labyrinth, was just around the corner. Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness was released at the end of 2005 as the sequel to Pokemon Colosseum.
Tumblr media
Now, at this point in Generation 3, there have been two main versions, two remade versions, and a console game. This is not even mentioning the Pokemon Box which was the only way you could store Pokemon outside of the handheld games, which would serve as the catalyst for Bank and Home many years later. With the release of XD, this rounded the list of games up to six and this isn’t counting buying both versions of RS and FRLG.
Hey, at least you were finally able to claim Lugia alongside any remaining Hoenn exclusives and Johto Pokemon!
Tumblr media
Needless to say, Game Freak needed to think of something for Generation 4 onward so that nothing this convoluted could exist again. Utilizing the new hardware of the Nintendo DS and its ability to access the GBA cartridge slot, transferring Pokemon from Gen 3 to 4 was made possible with very little headache. Pokemon transferred this way couldn’t make their way back to Gen 3. After various games and spinoffs throughout Generation 3, however, this was an acceptable drawback.
Throughout the years, the line between generations and game systems was blurred to the point where upon the release of Pokemon Bank, transferring Pokemon between generations as early as 4 to as late as 6 was clockwork. It was even easy to trade with others due to the usage of GTS, then Wonder Trade, and finally Surprise Trade.
If you really want to see how intricate this transfer system works, look no further than this IGN article detailing this process from as far back as Gen 3.
So why am I saying all of this? Well, let’s look back at Generation 3 one last time so we can see how we got to this point of easy transferring.
Consider the price of GBA games ranged around the price of $30. That’s Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, Fire Red/Leaf Green, and Emerald, so, three games equating to roughly $90. The price of Gamecube games were around the $50 range at that time so there’s Pokemon Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness. That’s about $100. With the games alone, it checked out to around $200 over the span of two video game systems! Spending $90 in 2020 seems like a bargain steal in comparison.
Tumblr media
It was a time of a lot of firsts for Game Freak. It was their first time developing a system that allowed all Pokemon from older generations to become accessible in modern times. It was their first time trying out various Nintendo peripherals to explore various means of transferring. It was also their first time in perfecting a way to transfer Pokemon without the need to buy an entirely new game.
This is the major point of the new Pokemon Sword and Shield update. Much like the generations past, you do not need the expansion to obtain the Pokemon from previous games. As not all of the Pokemon are still made available even if over 200 Pokemon are being added, I have a hunch that we are not done with Pokemon news as of yet. Perhaps we shall look forward to a Sinnoh remake to obtain the unobtainable Pokemon?
In conclusion, before one goes to protest Game Freak or harass the game developer on his birthday about existing Pokemon, think about how far we have come to get to where we are at now. Be grateful that we no longer have to go through such dark ages of Pokemon transferring ever again.
