"Big Sur" California
Bixby Creek Bridge, Big Sur. One of the most photographed and filmed bridges in the world.
Same bridge, and how Big Sur coast looks most of the year. Perfect conditions for the Dark Watchers.
Mission San Antonio de Padua, near the town of Jolon. Established where Spanish overland explorers found the coast too rugged to explore. The Spanish Mission system, a series of 21 church compounds, were established as way stops for Spanish travelers, and as a way to subjugate, enslave, and commit acts of cultural genocide against the indigenous Californian peoples.
John Steinbeck (1902-1968) grew up in the area of the Salinas Valley, and the Santa Lucia mountain range. He wrote of the dark watchers in his short story, "Flight."
Poet Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) called Big Sur home, and mentioned the Dark Watchers in his poem, "Such Counsels you Gave to Me."
The Summit of Ben Macdui in the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland. Alleged home of The Big Grey Man, a similar entity to The Dark Watchers.
Johann Silberschlag (1721-1791) German pastor and scientist who first scientifically explained the phenomenon of The Brocken Spectre.
A Brocken Spectre. Named after the Brocken Mountain in Germany. It is an optical illusion caused by a shadow being cast onto mist or clouds, and gives the impression that the shadow is both solid, and very large. And is sometimes accompanied by a "Glory."
The Brocken
A "Glory" is a series of glowing halo-like circles of light that sometimes surround a Brocken Spectre, and are caused by the moisture in the air focusing light through polarization.
Brocken Spectres can be objects and vehicles as well as people. In the case of a Glory, it will always be directly in line with the light source, and the observor. In the case of this plane photo, the very center of the glory represents where the photographer is sitting on the plane.
"The Sun Stone" a crystal of Ulexite. It has perculiar properties caused by the matrix along which the mineral is aligned. You can see the vertical grain of the crystal in this photo.
The grain of the crystal cause polarization of light. So when viewed from the right angle, the crystal appears transparent.
The polarization properties mean that the crystal can be used to locate the source of light through the creation of a glory. Here is how it works to locate the sun on a cloudy day in the redwoods. (Come to the Least Haunted Discord to see a video of how it works.)
By causing the haloes of the glory to line up in a specific pattern one can locate the sun through the clouds.
Could this be the fabled "Viking Sun Stone" of the eddas? Could be. And if it is, Least Haunted claims credit for the discovery! (Copyright. TM. TM. TM.)
(Sorry about the delay, I was hiding from the cats at the LH HQ. ❤, Mabel)
Episode 114: The Dark Watchers
From the coast of Big Sur, to the top of the second highest peak in The British Isles, Cody and Garth explore tales of giant shadow figures in the mist. What are The Dark Watchers? Who is The Big Gray Man? and What does a specter from Germany have to do with it? All of this and the opening of your third eye await in the latest episode of Least Haunted!
As always, please come join the episode discussion on the Least Haunted Discord!

Ten Interesting Italian Novels
1. The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
“The year is 1327. Franciscans in a wealthy Italian abbey are suspected of heresy, and Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate. When his delicate mission is suddenly overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths, Brother William turns detective. He collects evidence, deciphers secret symbols and coded manuscripts, and digs into the eerie labyrinth of the abbey where extraordinary things are happening under the cover of night. A spectacular popular and critical success, "The Name of the Rose" is not only a narrative of a murder investigation but an astonishing chronicle of the Middle Ages.” (amazon.com)
2. The Betrothed by Alessandro Manzoni
“The first Italian novel is a 17 century love story of Renzo and Lucia who are prevented from marrying and forced to flee by a cruel tyrant on a backdrop of war, revolution, religion and disease. In Italy, ‘The Betrothed’ holds almost the same status as the writings of Dante and it is generally considered one of the greatest European historical novels.” (italiannotes.com)
3. Don’t Move by Margaret Mazzantini
“On a rainy day, teenage Angela falls from her scooter and has an accident. While she is in a coma, her father Timoteo is forced to come to terms with its past. While he waits for her awakening, he confesses his deepest secrets both to his daughter and to himself.” (instantlyitaly.com)
4. Agostino by Alberto Moravia
“This short novella is about childhood, and the loss of it, growing up, and the difficulties therein, family ties, and the strife that they cause. Though the main character is a 13-year-old boy, sexual elements and tensions run throughout the pages, and this short book set on the Tuscan seaside is anything but relaxed.” (ourescapeclause.com)
5. I’m not scared by Nicolo Ammaniti
“The novel I’m not scared tells the story of Michele, a 9-year-old growing up in a small farming community in 1970s southern Italy. Michele’s summers are simple and free, spent playing across the infinite wheat fields with his sister and peers until he discovers something so bad he can’t even tell his broke but loving parents about it. This book is a must-read if you love an Italian novel with a captivating plot set in agricultural southern Italy.” (travelconnectexperience.net)
6. The Silent Duchess by Dacia Maraini
“This is the story of the life of Marianna Ucria, a noblewoman living in 18th Century Sicily. Marianna is “special”: she’s deaf and dumb yet she feels and understands as everyone else does, and even better. The novel was acclaimed for the historic reconstruction and for the rich plot. It has already inspired millions of readers all over the world. Get it immediately if you want to experience Sicily as it was 300 years ago and to know what is the shocking secret that lies behind Marianna’s disability.” (travelconnectexperience.net)
7. The art of joy by Goliarda Sapienza
“This is the history of the twentieth century, transfigured by the perspective of one extraordinary woman. Sapienza, an intriguing figure in her own right—her father homeschooled her so she wouldn't be exposed to fascist influences—was a respected actress and writer who drew on her own struggles to craft this powerful epic. A fictionalized memoir, a book of romance and adventure, a feminist text, a bildungsroman—this novel is ultimately undefinable but deeply necessary; its genius will leave readers breathless.” (amazon.com)
8. Zeno's Conscience by Italo Svevo
“Long hailed as a seminal work of modernism in the tradition of Joyce and Kafka, and now available in a supple new English translation, Italo Svevo’s charming and splendidly idiosyncratic novel conducts readers deep into one hilariously hyperactive and endlessly self-deluding mind. The mind in question belongs to one Zeno Cosini, a neurotic Italian businessman who is writing his confessions at the behest of his psychiatrist. Here are Zeno’s interminable attempts to quit smoking, his courtship of the beautiful yet unresponsive Ada, his unexpected–and unexpectedly happy–marriage to Ada’s homely sister Augusta, and his affair with a shrill-voiced aspiring singer. Relating these misadventures with wry wit and irony, and a perspicacity at once unblinking and compassionate, Zeno’s Conscience is a miracle of psychological realism.” (goodreads.com)
9. The Leopard by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa
“The novel is a psychological study of Don Fabrizio, prince of Salina (called the Leopard, after his family crest), who witnesses with detachment the transfer of power in Sicily from the old Bourbon aristocracy to the new Kingdom of Italy and the grasping, unscrupulous liberal bourgeoisie during the 1860s. While adhering to the Don’s conservative viewpoint, the rich narrative unfolds in a series of compelling dramatic scenes. The character of Don Fabrizio is one of the most striking in modern Italian literature, and the book is widely recognized as a masterpiece.” (britannica.com)
10. The Moon and the Bonfire by Cesare Pavese
“The nameless narrator of The Moon and the Bonfires, Cesare Pavese's last and greatest novel, returns to Italy from California after the Second World War. He has done well in America, but success hasn't taken the edge off his memories of childhood, when he was an orphan living at the mercy of a bitterly poor farmer. He wants to learn what happened in his native village over the long, terrible years of Fascism; perhaps, he even thinks, he will settle down. And yet as he uncovers a secret and savage history from the war—a tale of betrayal and reprisal, sex and death—he finds that the past still haunts the present. The Moon and the Bonfires is a novel of intense lyricism and tragic import, a masterpiece of twentieth-century literature that has been unavailable to American readers for close to fifty years.” (amazon.com)

VISITING SICILY - THE SUN TASTE - Do not visit Sicily if you do not eat the sicilian desserts. You have to take this seriously because food in Sicily is very important and desserts are the most important part of every lunch and dinner. Eating in Sicily is not just eating, but a real social activity. There is no important event in a Sicilian family that should not be celebrated or remembered by a lunch or dinner. Those who are invited to lunch must not only avoid to eat three days in advance to make room for all that they will have to eat, but have a duty to bring sweets and if these sweets, for unfortunate event they will not be good, for the rest of your life it will always be remembered as your mortal sin. Every religious Party has its own special sweets: St. Joseph, St. Martin, St. Agatha, Easter, Christmas, Carnival, the day dedicated to the dead people, every little party has a sweet that is only done on that occasion because it is not a party if there isn’t that specific sweet. So you have to sacrifice yourself and visiting Sicily you have to eat all the desserts you can, those on the street or homemade (granita, ice cream, ice cream with croissants, giuggiulena, nougat, honey biscuits, rewards, sfinci, fravioli, u pupu cull 'ovu) and those of the pastry (cassata, cassatine, minne di Sant'Agata, olivelle, soft nougats, nougat of pistachios, cakes seven veils, babbà, sweets of the dead, pignolata, martorana fruit, lemon trunk, zuddi, parfait of almonds, biancomangiare, bucellato, African, savoia cake, San Martino biscuits, sweet peaches, queen biscuits, Elena pastas, minni di virgini, pigtails, gelo of orange or mandarin orange, cinnamon, watermelon, Tetù and Tetò, mpanadigghi, cuddureddi, Petralla's pegs, Bersaglieri, Cassatelle di Agira, Santa Lucia's bed, Aniseed biscuits, sighs of a nun, Marsala's Spagnolette, almond cakes, curly biscuits, piparelli and all the others and all the other hundreds of sweets that I am not able to write here but that you can find on this site https://www.dolcisiciliani.net/)
To help you in the hard work of discovering the Sicilian sweets I am attaching the list of those that are considered the best Sicilian pastry shops.

CAROB FOR SALE IN Saint Lucia
The Carob fruit (also commonly called the Bosker) has a taste and texture that has been coveted for centuries. When dried, Carob pods have a chocolate-like flavor that can be used as sweetener in baked goods, drinks and other dishes. Carob pods have a dark brown color and contain tiny beans inside. They may be stored for six months to a year before being ground up for use. Dried Carob pods are also stand-alone treats to snack on. Here at Turkish Carob, we proudly carry Dried Carob pods shipped fresh worldwide. Get yours from our trusted suppliers and start enjoying this healthy and sweet snack year-round now!
When you love chocolate, it's hard to find a replacement with the same flavor and mouth-feel, right? Enter carob. Not chocolate, not really. But a good place to start. In fact, there are plenty of times when I choose carob instead. Why? Unlike chocolate, carob is naturally sweet, low in fat, high in fiber, has calcium, and most importantly to me, no caffeine. And because chocolate is linked to migraines and caffeine-sensitivity for some people, carob definitely has its advantages. Carob comes from the pod of a tree that grows along the Mediterranean Sea. The pod contains a sweet, edible pulp. Once dried and roasted, the pulp is ground into a powder called carob flour (but more commonly referred to as "carob powder"). It's similar to cocoa powder in color and can be substituted one-for-one in recipes, but carob is unique with its own special flavor and texture. If you've never tried carob, you're in for a treat. It's sweet, mild and packed with pectin, a soluble fiber. Traditionally, it was used to soothe an upset stomach.

Nutritional characterization of carobs and traditional carob products
Carob fruits are characterized by high sugar content (48%–56%) (mainly sucrose, glucose, and fructose), 3%–4% protein, a low‐fat content (0.2%–0.6%), low content of alkaloids, and high content of dietary fibers, especially in the seeds. Specifically, the pulp is composed of sugars, polyphenols (e.g., tannins, flavonoids, phenolic acids), and minerals (e.g. K, Ca, Mg, Na, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn), whereas the seed contains proteins, dietary fibers, polyphenols, and minerals and is free of gluten.
Carob powder is a valuable source of vitamins E, D, C, Niacin, B6, and folic acid; vitamins A, B2, and B12 are provided in lower levels. Carob powder oil is composed of 17 fatty acids, mainly oleic, linoleic, palmitic, and stearic acid at 40.45%, 23.19%, 11.01%, and 3.08%, respectively (Youssef, El‐Manfaloty, & Ali, 2013). A number of cyclitols are also present in carob beans. The major cyclitol is D‐pinitol (3‐O‐methyl‐D‐chiro‐inositol) with multiple health benefits.
The endosperm of the seed contains the water‐soluble mucus, known as locust bean gum (LBG), which is a polysaccharide (galactomannan) consisting of 16%20% D‐galactose and 80%–84% D‐mannose. It is created from seed processing and is a natural additive (E410) (Salinas, Carbas, Brites, & Puppo, 2015). It is widely used in the food industry as thickener, stabilizer, and gelling or dispersing agent, and its labeling is compulsory. LBG has many applications in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, film emulsions, paints, polishes, ceramics, and adhesives.
Many studies have shown that carobs and their products can promote human health and help prevent specific chronic diseases. In particular, they show antiproliferative and apoptotic activity against cancer cells, they are suggested to treat diarrhea symptoms, and they present antihyperlipidemia and antidiabetic effects due to their high antioxidants, polyphenols, and high content in fibers. Therefore, they are considered ideal food for people with diabetes (Youssef et al., 2013). Carob flour (from carob seeds) is used to manufacture dietetic products and products for celiac patients (gluten‐free products).
Carob is an indigenous drought‐ and temperature‐tolerant tree cultivated in Cyprus for centuries. In the past, it significantly benefited the agricultural economy of the island. It was widely known as the “black gold” of Cyprus. In recent years, carob's health benefits and nutritional value are being highlighted and therefore traditional carob‐based food products end up in the market.

Third Annual “Rainey's Ride To The Races” Set For Laguna Seca
Third Annual “Rainey's Ride To The Races” Set For MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest At Laguna Seca. MotoAmerica, North America’s premier motorcycle road racing series, is excited to announce that “Rainey's Ride To The Races” will again be held in conjunction with the 2023 MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest At Laguna Seca with this year’s ride boasting even more legends than in years past. This year’s ride includes the following legends: - Three-time World Champion Kenny Roberts - Four-time World Champion Eddie Lawson - Three-time AMA Grand National Champion Bubba Shobert - 1993 World Champion Kevin Schwantz - Seven-time Supercross and Motocross National Champion Rick Johnson - 2011 World Superbike Champion Carlos Checa - Three-time AMA Superbike Champion Doug Chandler Rainey's Ride To The Races will be held on Friday, July 7, opening day of the fifth round of the MotoAmerica Medallia Superbike Championship, and will again benefit the Roadracing World Action Fund, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes motorcycle racing safety with the facilitation of soft air barrier systems at racing events. The 100-mile ride will begin at the Moto Talbott Motorcycle Museum at 4 E Carmel Valley Road in Carmel Valley, California, and will tour the best parts of the Monterey Peninsula, including in and around the Santa Lucia Mountain ranges, the Salinas Valley foothills, local wineries, and the stunning Steinbeck country. The ride will conclude at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca with two laps around the racetrack, lunch and a Q&A session with legends Rainey, Roberts, Lawson, Shobert, Schwantz, Johnson, Chandler and Checa. The ride will be limited to 40 riders who purchase the special $500 Premium Rainey's Ride To The Races ticket. Last year’s ride raised nearly $75,000 for the Roadracing World Action Fund. “Last year’s ride was sold out and better than the first and this year promises to be better than the second,” said MotoAmerica President and three-time World Champion Wayne Rainey. “I’m excited we’ve added Kevin (Schwantz), Doug (Chandler), Ricky (Johnson) and Carlos (Checa) to the ride so it will give our participants even more time with the legends. The ride was a lot of fun for both the champions and our fans, and the best part is that we raised nearly $75,000 for the Roadracing World Action Fund. We have a goal of raising more this July.” Rainey's Ride To The Races will be conducted at a relaxed, easy pace and no one will be left behind. Gordon McCall, a local motorcycle enthusiast and good friend of MotoAmerica, will be leading the ride. The ride will take approximately two to two and a half hours from start to completion. “I appreciate your support and hope to see you there,” said Rainey. Read the full article

Mi cajita
From left to right: The picture of some protestors/activists in Mexico City. Dead center in a white shirt with brown vest is my grandpa, Ramiro. He was born in Oaxaca, but migrated with grandma and his oldest son (Javier) to the city. He was a small-business owner and fought for his rights as one often. My tia Lucia gave me this picture last time I was in el D.F., she told me he was very politically active. I never met my grandfather, he passed away before I got the chance to come back. It’s nice to have little traits and stories be passed down.
The Beatles: Revolver- I found this in a box inside my dad’s garage. My dad hasn’t held onto anything other than music throughout all of his time here in the U.S. He has very eclectic taste from cumbias to Slayer and the Beatles. This was a score for me, now I have it in my apartment in Portland.
Polaroid of my dad that my cousin took one Summer night when I was still in high school and he used to karaoke with his friend from next door. He’d sing Leo Dan pretty much every time. He’d get very drunk and lovey.
Finally, little embroidered flower purse from el D.F. Even though I don’t live at home with my folks anymore, it’s nice when relatives remember to send me something. This little bag traveled from el D.F. to Salinas, CA to Portland!
It’s also nice because I’ve consistently received purses from family members. I’m not sure why, and it’s honestly too feminine for me but the thought is still sweet.

Top 4 Things to Do Whenever You Are In Salinas CA
Salinas is a small yet classy city a short way in from Monterey Bay on California’s Central Coast. The diversity of things to do in & around Salinas makes it absolutely flexible: food lovers can tuck into the local organic produce & wines, sports aficionados can enjoy a rodeo event or race at Laguna Seca, while just about everybody will fall in love with the wild splendour of the Pacific coast & verdant countryside inland.
Visit Toro County Park:
Minutes south of Salinas, this stunning expanse of open country lures mountain bikers, horseback riders and hikers for its challenging and remarkable terrain. There’re twenty miles of trails for adventure seekers who don’t mind a challenging stroll – the effort is more than worthwhile for the scintillating views out of the Salinas Valley and Monterrey Bay.
Explore Old town Salinas Farmer’s Market:
The Salinas Valley is amongst the most verdant areas in California and is portrayed by local authorities as the “Salad Bowl of the World”. Flourishing here are cauliflower, peppers, broccoli, vines, tomatoes, strawberries and spinach. So it is no surprise that the Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning on Gabilan Street is a significant institution. Here you will find all the divine organic local produce traders sell local specialties like honey & jam, alongside a range of hand-crafted arts and crafts.
River Road Wine Trail:
Hand-picking the best local wineries, the River Road Wine Trail begins in Salinas and continues on to Soledad to the southeast. It is a picture-perfect introduction to the region’s countryside & viticulture. You will make regular stops at idyllic vineyards for tastings, and as you make your way into the Santa Lucia Highlands the backdrop and sights are unbelievably stunning.
Eat like a local at any Salina restaurant:
There are no shortages of restaurants in Salinas, but when it comes to the best there is no competition of The Village Restaurant. This Salinas CA restaurant is known for its unique Italian, Mexican and American cuisine. Chef Alfredo is dedicated to bringing to your table excellent food with fresh ingredients and with a particular Latin touch. From traditional breakfasts to brunches, lunch, as well as dinners – The Village Restaurant, has it all to suit your palate. Stop by this Salinas CA Restaurant to enjoy a good breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, or an excellent selection of wines whenever you are in the Monterrey area.
