(Chapter 102)
Rambled about this before on this post, but I really wish they would explained how the search party is able to see out of their masks, even if it was a single panel of Emma pointing out something like nearly imperceptible eye slits.
(Chapter 147 | Chapter 149 | Chapter 150)
Older, classical masks like those of the elder Bayons (compared to those of Bayon II's wife and children), Yverk, and Geelan's clan incorporate a pair of symmetrical, horizontal, and frequently vacant eye holes among their designs.
In the chapter 90 bonus sketch, this is mentioned as respecting tradition, which I interpret as a holdover from the days of demons hunting humans, and the intention of that incorporation was to play on pareidolia-enhanced fear among humans who, out of habit, would look toward the horizontal pair of eye holes first when gazing upon demons in combat and would frequently be treated to an unflinching, menacing abyss. It's a good subtle tactic to unnerve them before they take in the rest of the mask.
Once the farm system was instituted and demons weren't regularly warring with humans anymore, it became unnecessary and seemed to fall out of style among the general population who weren't banished like the Geelan clan.
I assume this is the main reason the kids don't opt for horizontal eye holes. There's also the issue of demons potentially catching sight of their human eyes, but there has to be some black cloth to work with in the bunker that could have lined the masks if they couldn't get whatever magic Bayon and Yverk use for no other eyes or skin to show through their horizontal mask sockets.
Either way, it's one less thing to make them stand out from the crowd when they're already contending with their comparatively short statures, human hands and feet, and having to wear perfume.

Highly recommend checking out @puff-poff's posts on demon culture for anyone who hasn't read them already for the most comprehensive analysis on subjects in this vein.
(Chapter 90 Bonus Sketch)
Luce having the most ostentatious mask of the poachers as a reflection of him being part of the garish nouveau riche compared to the quiet luxury of Nous, Nouma, Bayon, and Leuvis is a familiar and fitting dynamic given the commentary on class division Shirai leans into.
Regarding being able to reveal their faces, I disagree.
(Chapter 102)
While the two demon brothers have never seen meat from any of the four top class farms—with their bodies completely intact upon serving—we do see a collection of mass production heads in a jar available for sale among the lower classes, probably the most expensive jar in the shop with the value the human brain has among demonkind. (One could argue they meant they never saw it because it was in the very back of the shop in that particular panel, but I'd say it's pedantic for ignoring the intention of this speech to be another nod to the class divide and strife among the demon populace.)
There's also the issue of the horizontal placement of human eyes compared to the vertical placement of demons'.
(Mystic Code Book Chapter 7 Q&A)
This is also why I have mixed feelings about the kids' demon masks. On the one hand, I do understand why they wouldn't want to draw attention to themselves and risk having their human eyes being seen through more conspicuous holes.
(Chapter 102)
But I really wish they would have spent a panel acknowledging Gillian, Nigel, and Sonya incorporating nearly imperceptible eye slits or something to clarify exactly how they see while wearing them.
But unrelated to the mask conundrum, there's also the issue of humans having five digits on their hands compared to six that demons have (though I know there's a joke about Sonju having varying amounts of toes throughout the story).
I don’t think it’s been confirmed how well they can smell humans since they had to wear perfume
I'd say them having to wear perfume at all is a good indicator the demons' sense of smell vastly outclasses that of humans.
(Chapter 83 | Chapter 1)
The only reasons the two lackey demons don’t come after Emma and Norman right away in chapter 1 is that they’re caught up in conversation and probably a bit intoxicated off the idea of being able to eat even "just a fingertip" of meat from a top class farm, which is not something for the likes of lowly farm workers to enjoy, though Shirai notes they and even those working at mass production farms do have more prestige than demons of the same class working in other jobs.
(Mystic Code Book Chapter 7 Q&A)
interesting hypothesis…
I have made other posts about how demons differ based on what they eat. I thought this scene when Don, Gilda, Emma, Ray, Violet and Zack were searching for the golden water temples was every interesting
We as the readers have seen demons with feet like that! (These are just Bayon cuz his outfit makes it the easiest to see his feet)
i don’t think it has ever been explicitly said that masks are a sign of wealth, we only know that older/richer/ more dangerous demons have masks that are harder to break
but if they are a sign of pride and status then lower class demons that the protags were interacting with would not have seen the faces of rich demons before!
so hypothetically the humans could show their faces/feet and claim they were rich demons that didn’t show regeneration? The poor most likely haven’t seen human faces before because brains are the most valuable part
but I don’t think it’s been confirmed how well they can smell humans since they had to wear perfume

🦉👒The Influence of One Piece in The Promised Neverland (A very self-indulgent post)
The straw hats worn by the girls in The Promised Neverland ch. 47 color cover were a tribute to One piece's 20th anniversary. It has always been Shirai sensei's favorite tpn illustration ever since.
An entire generation in Japan grew up following One piece. Many of the young readers from late 1900s are now the newgen mangaka currently working in Shonen jump.
Kouhei Horikoshi as a high schooler (15yo) sent a one piece fanart to Oda in 2002. Twelve years later, he starts his own manga, now promoted by One piece author Eiichiro Oda himself.
One piece got Shirai into JUMP manga.
I started reading Jump Magazine for the first time when I was in Junior High. One Piece was the trigger that made me subscribe to it like a machine, and then I thought “other manga are fun too!”, and thus became addicted.
-Kaiu Shirai (2020), The Promised Neverland artbook.
Suguru Sugita, the person Shirai submitted his og manuscript to, was Toriko's editor in charge. The following year (2014), Sugita became One Piece's manga editor (later its media editor in 2017). Sugita retired from One piece altogether in 2019, while working as TPN editor from 2016 to 2020.
The Promised Neverland + former One Piece editor, Suguru Sugita. On the right is a doodle drawn by Eiichiro Oda sensei introducing him.
"O-Sugi. This is the media editor, Sugita. Well natured, romanticist. Throws in random onomatopoeia. So drippy from head to toe that the girls avoid him. Compliments juniors on an annoying level. Has a strange dream -> ("I'll get myself a Kansai-ben speaking gf within this year!") Has lots of friends, but daydreams too much so he might not be able to get hitched soon."
From TPN's pre-serialization stage to its final days, Sugita was closely involved with both One piece and The Promised Neverland. Regardless of the difference in genre, One piece's influence in TPN is evident, many of which were suggested by editor Sugita.
Following are a compilation of details discussed in the The Promised Neverland fanbook where the author-editor duo noted the influence of One Piece in its creation.
🦉 The food, the biology
(The Promised Neverland Search for Minerva + final arc spoilers)
In One Piece, the characters can obtain special powers by eating cursed fruits called Devil Fruits (Luffy's elasticity, for example). This served as a basis for The Promised Neverland's demon biology. During early stages of TPN first arc, there was no specific concept involving demon's diet (thus we hear two demons casually talking about eating cats). Post escape, editor Sugita suggested to add the concept of 'becoming what you eat', stated to be directly inspired by One Piece (fanbook ch. 2). It was decided that the demons in TPN would be heavily dependant on human meat to maintain their sentience.
One piece x Toriko official crossover spread, two manga in JUMP where food meant a lot more than simply filling your stomach.
"Food" both a narrative and thematic tool behind One Piece, so much so that a recently popular theory is that (avoid if you want) the protagonist's secret dream at the end of his journey is to throw a massive party that would connect different races together in a brotherly bond. Each arc ends with a scene of partying and singing, a musician was one of the first crewmate positions Luffy wanted to fill in his ship.
Yugo's refusal to eat and join the table subtly hinted his refusal to partake in such bonding. It's another detail pointed out in the fanbook (ch. 3). The food scenes in One Piece had not only inspired Shirai but also Haikyuu author, Furudate Haruichi (stated in Haikyuu databook).
🦉 Characters as Inspirations
[Romance Dawn + Goldy Pond spoiler] One piece character Helmeppo was the inspiration behind Goldy Pond demon, Luce. Helmeppo was one of the earliest characters introduced in One Piece (ch.3), a weak but spoiled child of a marine officer who'd exploit his father's influence to get about anything. Luce, the youngest hunter in Goldy Pond, was the son of Dozza. Helmeppo was redeemed eventually, unlike Luce.
[Shabondy Archipelago + TPN final arc spoiler] The World Nobles in One Piece are arrogant slave-owners hailed as gods on earth for their ancestry. Lord Pupo's flashy appearance and simple-mindedness were inspired by them.
[Dressrosa + TPN final arc spoiler] Bartolomeo, an in-series fan of the protagonists, was introduced in One Piece manga at the time of Sugita's debut as One piece editor in 2014 and instantly became popular. In The Promised Neverland, Lambda kids were supposed to obey Norman in a normal manner. But editor Sugita wanted to lighten up the mood and make them goofy fanboys, inspired by Bartolomeo's success.
[Arabasta spoiler] One piece's first major antagonist Crocodile served as a base for TPN characters, mainly antagonists:
When I was drawing dignified characters for TPN, Sugita-san gave me a piece of advice called the "Crocodile Line". Whether or not Crocodile from One Piece would say such a line would determine whether or not the character (I made) was dignified enough. It was a good method. I love Crocodile so there's that too.

182 Days of TPN - Day 77
Chapter 77: “The Foolish Weaklings”
Imagine how wild this whole battle would’ve been if there was a raging fire both sides had to worry about. (setting things ablaze is more of a Grace Field kid kinda thing anyway).
It’s moments like this that remind me that I really need to go back and read the light novels (if I can ever find them). I know the third focuses on Gillian & Nigel’s first days at GP a little bit.
Due to my everlasting love for Revy, I am severely weak to any character that is shown to dual wield guns and Gillian is no exception.
Really don’t have much to say about the gunfight other than the typical saltiness I feel that we won’t see it animated. They fired more bullets in these couple panels than all of that stupid season two.
Gotta give credit to all the knowledge Lucas picked up throughout his many years stuck at GP. To pick up how the enemy acts and their defenses, he would’ve had to watch them carefully (somehow..from hiding inside the windmill. the resistance most likely acted as his eyes).
I always praise Emma or Isabella for being great actresses, but the resistance do a pretty fair job too. Sonya mentioned two chapters ago that they all pretended to be weak in order to gather information, so the fact they kept up that act well enough (for several years I imagine) for the poachers to believe it is pretty darn good.
Mmmhhhm this is such a nice panel. She’s got an immense amount of rage just waiting to let loose. Also, for the longest time I thought she just calmly takes off Luce’s mask here, but then he’s shown wearing it at the start of the next chapter? It would make sense if the short upcoming chase scene was a flashback up til this moment, but those pages don’t have the typical black surrounding the panels, so I dunno. Whatever.
Favorite panel/moment:
I mean.. of course?? The very moment I fell in love with this chick! The complete shock on Luce’s face is also hilarious.

@graphx Normally I try to respect the opinions of others (and I still do yours), but I have to disagree about „Andrew fulfilled his role so it was alright how he was handled“ because no. There were so many clues that made this character so intriguing for me. His tick of constantly snipping, the talk he had with Phil at Grace Field that just cut off at the cliffhanger, him remembering the Glory Bell-escapees… there was a lot of potencial left for Andrew, as I see it. What did he talk about with Phil? What‘s his relationship with Peter? Had they any deeper meaning, since it seemed like Peter relied a lot on him, or was he nothing more than just some killer guy the Ratris had to waste on some unruly cattle children? Was Andrew already around when Yuugo and co. fled from their farm, making this something Andrew wanted to set right after all these years?
Most villains in TPN get some heartwrenching backstory (e.g. Isabella, Leuvis, Krone, Peter, Legravalima, even Bayon to a degree), but not this guy? Yes, we also didn‘t learn much about Luce, Nouma and Nous, but that‘s fine, because their characters did speak through action themselves! They had their little arcs and then were killed off. I know enough about them to feel satisfied with them. But „sadly“, Andrews‘s just a blank page, filled with nothing but wasted potencial and some gore.
Again, that‘s only my opinion, so everyone is free to feel about this how they want. Just wanted to throw in my five cents 🙂
Who is your least and most favorite character in TPN and why?
Hmm... who could be my fave I guess...?
My son… my captain… my king 👑💙
Because he‘s just a little guy but he‘s sooo good while being my little guy! Depressed but determinded to live one, protective of his friends and family, snarky and sarcastic but never outright mean if you don‘t deserve so, he tried to sacrifice himself for the sake of his friends, just loves too much and gets hurt by it, was even able to assure his mother it was right for him to live on… should I continue? Nah. Ray is just best boi, period.
Andrew on the other hand…
So much wasted potencial. Cool character design, I‘m not even appealed by him standing under Peter‘s wing, but man, he was so boring and cruel! Nothing was ever accomblished with this character (outside of killing Yuugo and Lucas and man, this was a low blow) which saddens me. Shirai can do write awesome characters! But… Andrew wasn‘t one of them :/
Here, have my fave picture of Andrew:
We should all say thank you to the demon devouring this guy :)
#Snickers babbling#thinsg are heating up in the *hating Andrew*-corner in my brain sorry XD#the promised neverland#tpn

TPN Goldy Pond Demon HCs part two !! Also I’ll probably post trans headcanons for the demons soon 👀
<- previous post
Leuvis is a cat person and prefers small, weird animals, while Bayon is a dog person and prefers big ones (his family has two borzois). Leuvis is deathly scared of Bay’s family dogs though, so they settled on a tiny white pomeranian (named Puff) to take care of together. Surprisingly, she gets along with Parvus and Operiu well, despite being the calmer and most peaceful of the three. Luce, Nouma, and Nous favor her over the rest.
Not sure when, but Leuvis gets a black cat (named Tenebra) who looks very…weird, even for demon standards. Everyone’s a bit put off by Tenebra at first, but they soon warm up to him. He’s a really cuddly cat, and gets along with Puff. Can’t say the same for him and the other pets though. They get into lots of (not severe) fights. (If anyone wants an idea of what Tenebra looks like, just search up Jinx cat)
If Leuvis and Bayon are ever late to breakfast (which happens only…sometimes), it’s either they took too long to get out of bed (Leuvis dragging his wife back to the bed for ”just 5 more minutes” of cuddling), or ended up bickering again
Nous and Nouma used to share a room together in the mansion. Keywords used to. They couldn’t stand each other and complained enough that Bayon had to give them different rooms.
Bayon is usually the first to get up in the morning before the rest, quickly followed by Leuvis. By the time the former gets to the kitchen and busies himself with making tea, the Nou twins are up, already racing each other to the dining table. Luce is last to wake up, routinely disturbed by either Tenebra or Operiu if not by a servant knocking on his door.
Food crimes: Luce ate a raw egg before (as a dare. He got salmonella), as well as willingly ate several raw fish (he apparently claimed he liked the taste...and ofc he got sick again). Leuvis has eaten an entire human raw before, some time before The Promise, and was probably urged on by one or two of his older brothers. (It was not a pleasant experience, both the before and aftermath)
On the topic of food, Nous’ favorite meals are generally steaming hot, tender, and juicy. Nouma prefers something sweet but also tangy. Bayon likes light yet filling meals (now that I think about it is that an oxymoron-). Leuvis can eat an ungodly amount of sweets/desserts for someone his age without getting sick (Bayon wishes he could do the same). Luce can be seen eating multitudes of cake anytime of the day. No one knows where he’s getting them from, but the cakes get more and more fancier each time.
#note: my hc of leuvis being scared of dogs came before the 3rd light novel & is not at all related#additional note: Bayon isnt genderbent here I see him as nby and liking some feminine terms#tpn#the promised neverland#tpn demons#tpn demon headcanons#tpn headcanons#goldy pond#tpn leuvis#tpn lewis#tpn bayon#tpn luce#tpn nouma#tpn nous#tpn nou twins#tpn leubay#i'll draw something for these HCs (specifically the pet ones) later

Sorryyyyyy I’ve been listening to the TPN S2 OST
I’m not even that much of a sound design enthusiast in general but I’m reading the goldy pond arc and I’m in absolute MOURNING just thinking about what we could have had (DO YOU KNOW HOW BADLY I WANTED TO SEE AN 11 YEAR OLD PUNCH HER FUTURE FATHER FIGURE IN THE BALLS???!?!????!)
Muijika’s theme fits her so perfectly I’m thinking about the other characters having their own
Would Yuugo’s be discordant at the beginning? Would that part play during his mental breakdown and fade out when he passes out? Would it get more orchestral and similar to Emma’s as it goes on? Would it be victorious and notable before you ever see the camera pan up to a smoking rooftop after he breaks leuvis’ds mask? Would it synchronize with Ray because he’s on the rooftop with him??
Would his theme reference tea parties? Would it get more hopeful by the time it gets back to the bunker?? Symbolising that he accepts his new family??? WOULD IT BE IN TUNE WITH NAT’S COOL KING BALLAD?? WOULD IT PLAY WHEN EMMA WAKES UP FROM HER COMA??
Would it be complementary Lucas’s??Would they harmonize when they finally see each other again???
Would Oliver’s theme be similar to Emma’s to symbolize being leaders of their respective groups? Would it mirror Ray’s when he asks to be left behind???
Would the techno themes be more present whenever minerva is mentioned to foreshadow their technology being more advanced than anything they have had before (like in the testing rooms?)
WOULD THE MUSIC THAT PLAYS WHEN GOLDY POND IS PREPARING MIRROR THE TRAINING MUSIC THAT PLAYED FOR THE GRACE FIELD KIDS???
When Emma throws the axe at Luce would you be able to hear it slice through the air? The billow of Leuvis’s ridiculously dramatic cape? Could you hear the children breathing heavily as they run away? Would you only be able to hear jake, monica and theo’s running because violet and emma are used to hiding their footsteps????
Would Emma and Ray’s footsteps in the forest get softer and softer the more they learn and watch from yuugo?? WOULD THEIR FEET NOT CLICK ON THE CONCRETE??
Would Nous talk in an overlap with Nouma’s voice after he eats her? Would Nous’s scream of outrage be good enough voice acting to rival emma’s iconic scream from the first episode?? Would it sound so viscerally human for a moment you feel bad for them??
Would you hear rustles in the trees despite nous and noma aren’t moving to foreshadow paula and violet getting into sniping position??
Would the snap of the wires they set up for traps sound different when they spring them depending on how dangerous they are?
WOULD THE MUSIC THAT PLAYS WHEN THE MONSTERS ARE COMING BE LIKE SIRENS OR A DISTORTED/EERIE CHEERFUL VIBE??
Would the guns nigel specifically engineered have a different sound compared to regular bullets? Would Emma’s flash bullet have a shrill sound that freezes everything as the bullet hits leuvis in slow motion?
DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE ROTATING CAMERA ANGLES I WANTED TO SEE!!! UTILIZING THE POV SHOTS FROM THE FIRST SEASON ONLY THIS TIME ITS THE DEMONS BEING WATCHED!!?!??!
Would the scene when Emma gets stabbed and goes into an underwater dream state have more muffled music (maybe a mix of her own theme, Norman’s and Isabella’s lullaby) that gets louder and clearer the more she regains conciousness?
These are all incredibly specific and unrealistic expectations but I think I deserve to be a little delusional when it comes to this show
I’d love to hear any sounds you also would have loved to hear in tpn Season 2 (done right)!!!!

182 Days of TPN - Day 131
Chapter 131: "Welcome to the Entrance"
It's so satisfying to see that entire Cuvitidala/Seven Walls search pay off as we finally get to witness the method that'll allow them to reach the entrance correctly.
The whole ritual they have to go through to accomplish it and all the hard work they put in to figure it out in the first place is so clever in the manga that it makes me really dislike that the anime conveniently place the door underneath GF headquarters and the kids only had to take an elevator down and use their WM to reach it. I know they went through the whole GF raid beforehand but even then, that's too simple.
Is this what it feels like when you know multiple languages? That you can just switch a different part of your mind on and understand stuff without much effort? I wouldn't know. I'm dumb and only know one (unless ya wanna count reading unown.)
Oh yeah, let's not forget to mention that s2 has the door function like the actual pathway to the human world instead of the entrance to the Seven Walls. The door literally has one job and they couldn't get that right.. like I get the whole idea of the Seven Walls was completely taken out of the anime, but damn, why include it at all then??
Dozza not wanting to stand up because he'll just have to go down and kneel eventually anyway is the type of lazy behavior I feel deep within my soul.
It's just hitting me now that Dozza and Luce were related and their horns look quite similar. Bayon was easier to take notice of and the same with Noum and her relation to Nous and Nouma. I know it clearly states it here, but again, I don't pay that much attention to the demons.
Gonna apologize now for all the occasions I'll bring up the queen's fashion sense because the amount of details Demizu put into it is a whole other level of insane. The little design on her belt (I guess I'll call it that?) sorta looks like a flipped version of the center of the Seven Wall's door too. Oh, I'm also never gonna spell her name correctly. I can only call her queen. Or Legs. (I might just call her that from here on out because me, myself and I refer to someone else as queen. obviously.)
Favorite panel/moment:
I love how these panels connect to one another. It would've been cool if the blood actually flowed from the start of their hands all the way down into the jar instead of being cut off midway by the panel, but it's fine.
They both look so good in this panel as well, so brave and positive yet completely unaware of all the horrors and headaches they're about to face. Good luck kiddos!
