Are they a stoner? TOS edition
Kirk: This dude definitely drinks bong water. In the academy he was a D1 stoner, close to Picard levels but more of a drinker since he’s from Iowa. He probably knows how to use corn husk as rolling paper ngl…I imagine he doesn’t really indulge as a captain but when he goes on shore leave he probably lights up.
McCoy: Like most doctors he’s against smoking due to the health risks…HOWEVER, being from the south if he has a drink in his hand anything is fair game. But all in all, he’s mostly a drinker.
Spock: He never tried anything related to weed or smoking until he met Kirk. Who convinced him it would be illogical to not try hitting a bong at least once since, “first officers should always being looking to try new experiences.” He never smoked again after that…Until he became an ambassador (shit is stressful)
Uhura: She is definitely the type to host a girls night smoke session where they blast SZA and paint their nails. She rolls on pink and purple papers and mixes other herbs into blunts like lavender and rosemary for the calming effects. Definitely the best person on the ship to vibe with.
Sulu: He is the only guy allowed at the girls night because he brings great holodiscs to watch from his collection. He’s not much of a smoker, but he does like edibles so he is usually isn’t getting zooted unless he’s with Uhura.
Chekov: Bro has a bowl cut. I don’t think I need to elaborate, like OBVIOUSLY this kid does dabs for fun…He also believes weed was somehow invented in Russia? Dude is a FIEND.
Scotty: He seems like he would be the one to bet Kirk he won’t drink the bong water and then Kirk does. A party animal through and through, he can smell loud from the warp core and will transport himself into your quarters and make you share.
Nurse Chapel: She is always the sober(ish) one who makes sure everyone is drinking enough water and has snacks. She also developed a hypospray that prevents lung damage from smoking as a preventative treatment, opposed to the usual cell regeneration therapy most smokers on the Enterprise do. She makes the best special brownies for Uhura’s girls night! But only to make Uhura happy ;)

Steve Yockey, co-creator of the Max series “The Flight Attendant,” is joining Starfleet as the new screenwriter for “Star Trek 4.”
Story details remain under a powerful cloaking device, but Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot still intend the project to be the final chapter for the cast that rebooted the franchise in movie theaters with 2009’s “Star Trek,” including Chris Pine (as Capt. James T. Kirk), Zachary Quinto (as Cmdr. Spock), Zoe Saldaña (as Lt. Nyota Uhura), Karl Urban (as Dr. Leonard McCoy), John Cho (as Lt. Hikaru Sulu) and Simon Pegg (as chief engineer Montgomery Scott). (Variety first reported the news in its cover story on the future of the “Star Trek” franchise.)
Bringing the cast back following 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond” has proven trickier for the studio than finding an altruistic Ferengi. At least three previous attempts fell apart for various reasons, most recently with director Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) and screenwriters Lindsey Beer (“Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”) that the studio had slated to open in late 2023. When Shakman left the film in 2022 to direct “The Fantastic Four” for Marvel Studios, however, Paramount pulled it from its slate and sent it back to spacedock.

Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn (originally titled The Vengeance of Kahn, but was changed when Star Wars Return of the Jedi was set to be titled Revenge of the Jedi) premiered on June 4, 1982. While many consider Star Trek the Motion Picture one of the worst of the franchise, it's sequel is often cited as one of the best. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was basically removed from involvement save for name only, so it was probably no surprise he was not a fan of the film. He would later come into further conflict with the studio with antics and behind the scenes drama on Star Trek the Next Generation TV series. The movie was a continuation from an episode of the original series "Space Seed" (season 1, episode 22, February 16, 1967, written by Gene L Coon and Carey Wilber, Directed by Marc Daniels). In the episode, the crew of the Enterprise awoke Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban) and his crew of the SS Botany Bay after approximately 200 years of suspended animation. They realized Kahn and his people were products of genetic experimentation that lead to the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s. After a failed mutiny, Kirk exiled Kahn, his crew, Star Fleet officer Lt. Marla McGivers (Madlyn Rhue) and the Botany Bay to the planet Ceti Alpha V. It was learned that since being left there that Ceti Alpha VI exploded turning Ceti Alpha V into a wasteland. Many were killed by the event and others were killed by Ceti eels, including McGivers, who had become Kahn's wife. Kahn managed to capture Captain Clark Terrel (Paul Windfield) and Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) and take control of the USS Reliant. Kahn then set off to try to take control of the Genesis Device that was being developed for the purpose of terraforming planets. The project was lead by one of Kirk's ex-lovers Dr Carol Marcus (Bebi Besch) and their son Marcus (Merrit Butrick). When Kirk learned they were in danger, he took comand of the USS Enterprise, which was on a training mission. He was joined by his old crew Mr Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan), Hikaru Sulu (George Takei), Lt Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) as well as new member Saavik (Kristy Alley). In their clashes with Kahn, the Enterprise was damaged leading to the deaths of Scotty's nephew (Ike Eisenmann) and Mr Spock (a large part of why Nimoy agreed to return for the sequel). A new planet was also created. This film was cited as having one of the first complete computer generated scenes in a movie, which was accomplished by the company that would become Pixar. ("Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn)

Leapin' Lenin, they forgot Chekhov!
Actually, they didn't. They just couldn't afford him.
In fact, the budget for Star Trek: The Animated Series was so low that George (Sulu) Takei and Nichelle (Uhura) Nichols were not going to be hired, either. The plan was to have James (Scotty) Doohan and Majel (Chapel) Barrett-Roddenberry provide those characters' voices.
Leonard Nimoy put a stop to that as soon as he found out. He found it unconscionable that the two actors of color from the original series were not coming back. So he threatened NBC and the producers: hire Takei and Nichols, or I walk.
Obviously there could be no Star Trek without Spock, so his demands were met. But there wasn't enough money to bring Walter (Chekhov) Koenig back. Chekhov was replaced with the alien navigator Lieutenant Arex, who was voiced (as were many, many characters on the show) by Doohan.
The producers did manage to throw Koenig a bone: he was able to sell a script, The Infinite Vulcan, which was the seventh episode of the animated series' first season. This also made Koenig the first Star Trek actor to write an episode for the, then in its infancy, franchise.

June of Doom 2024 Day 14 (@juneofdoom)
14. “What were you thinking?”
| Surrender | Human Shield | Outmatched |
~
"Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Giotto! You form Team Bravo and head east! Team Alpha, consisting of Sulu, Chapel, Chekov and myself, will head west."
Cadet Pavel Chekov listened carefully to his captain's words and quickly saluted as the man called his name and gave the order.
The USS Enterprise had been called to a rescue mission on a small Caribbean island. They were to find a kidnapped scientist who was being held captive by a group of rebels.
One team had already set off north from the coast, but had been unable to find anything. Now it was up to the remaining teams.
Chekov's heart was beating like crazy. It was his first away mission as a cadet. So far he had always stayed on board as a trainee navigator, but this time Captain Kirk had told him to come along. It filled him with incredible pride to be part of such an important mission.
"Let's go. We'll stay in radio contact. Be careful," Captain Kirk gave the final instructions before they all set off into the rainforest.
The crew members quietly made their way through the jungle. Chekov kept his eyes wide open and his ears pricked up, turning his head back and forth. He flinched a little at every sound and gripped his drawn weapon a little tighter.
"Take it easy, cadet. Caution is good, but if you tense up too much, it can quickly backfire."
Surprised, Chekov looked over his shoulder and looked into the face of Lt. Hikaru Sulu. The helmsman gave him a gentle smile and Chekov immediately blushed a little. He was extremely embarrassed that Sulu of all people had noticed how nervous he was. He admired the Asian very much and wanted to make a particularly good impression on him.
"D-da," Chekov replied in his native tongue, but quickly shook his head and corrected himself. "I-I mean aye, Lieutenant."
His colleague just patted him on the shoulder and then nodded in the direction of the captain and the medic Chapel, who were already a little further ahead of them. Chekov must have unconsciously slowed down a little. He and Sulu quickly caught up with the others again.
"Everything all right, Mr. Chekov?" Kirk cast a quick glance over his shoulder and Chekov nodded quickly.
"Aye, Captain. I'm ... just a little excited," he admitted, knowing that his superior officer had surely sensed it already. The man gave him an encouraging smile.
"I felt the same way on my first mission, Cadet. But I'm sure that feeling will subside with time."
Although Chekov could hardly imagine that the courageous, self-confident captain could ever have been as excited as he was, he was still grateful for the encouraging words.
They continued on their way in silence and all was quiet for a long time until Kirk suddenly raised a hand and brought everyone to a halt. He slowly took a few steps forward before cursing loudly.
"Fuck! Everybody take cover!" he shouted loudly and before the startled Chekov could react, Sulu had already knocked him to the ground.
A loud bang sounded and the young cadet hardly knew what hit him as smoke enveloped him and the others. He let out a few Russian curses. A smoke bomb!
The young man's ears rang from the blast. As if through absorbent cotton, he heard Kirk call for reinforcements and suddenly several shots rang out.
Chekov's breath caught and his heart literally threatened to explode as he helplessly turned his head back and forth, searching for the enemy attackers. He could barely make out anything through the smoke.
He lay prone on the ground, crawled over to the nearest tree to get up and use it for cover and finally he managed to spot something. Something that made his blood run cold.
Lt. Sulu was standing nearby, shooting at some enemies, but he didn't notice the enemy aiming at him from behind.
"Sulu!"
Chekov reacted without thinking. He rushed forward and placed himself between Sulu and the attacker like a shield while firing wildly at the bad guy.
It all happened far too quickly. Two shots hit Chekov, one in the shoulder and one in the chest, and he let out a cry of pain as he went down.
The young cadet did not know whether one of his bullets had also hit his opponent. He could only hope so.
Panting, he squeezed his eyes shut, somehow trying to block out the searing pain. It hurt so damn much!
"Chekov! Man down, man down!" Sulu's panicked voice rang out and Chekov tried to open his eyes to look at the lieutenant, but his lids were just too heavy.
He felt a whole lot of blood leaving his body, struggled against the unbearable pain, but eventually the young man lost consciousness.
It didn't matter. All that mattered was that Sulu was all right.
~
"Cadet Chekov, hey. Pavel."
When Chekov's eyes fluttered open, he didn't know where he was at first. The surroundings seemed incredibly familiar, but it took him a moment to recognize it as the Enterprise's sickbay.
Groaning, Chekov turned his head to the side and was surprised to see Lt. Sulu.
"Wh-what ... happened?" he asked, exhausted, and his counterpart smiled weakly.
"You took two bullets for me, Cadet."
Chekov squinted his eyes in confusion, but then he remembered what had happened. An ambush! He had thrown himself in front of Lt. Sulu and protected him.
"I'm ... still alive?"
Sulu laughed tiredly when he heard Chekov's question.
"Obviously. Fortunately, you were wearing body armor, so only the shot to the shoulder was dangerous. Chapel managed to stop the bleeding, but we're still on our way to the nearest island with a hospital." Sulu sighed. "What were you thinking?"
Chekov's cheeks turned red. He avoided the helmsman's gaze.
"I ... wanted to protect you, Lieutenant. And ... to be honest, I wasn't thinking much at all," he admitted.
Sulu's gentle smile returned and he squeezed Chekov's hand, which he had obviously been holding the whole time.
"Thank you, Pavel. But ... that was exceedingly stupid. Don't ever do that again, will you?"
Chekov had to smile now, too. He nodded.
"Understood, sir."
They talked for a while about how the mission had ended and how the captured scientist had been rescued before Sulu said that Chekov should get more rest.
What an exciting first away mission!

SO. That episode is fun, possibly one of my favorites behind the evil and good Kirk one (the not-a-cutie-patootie-dog alien and the amount of gay theatrics really speak to me)

My friend sent me a post today about RPG classes for the TOS bridge crew, and while they were funny they were also so wrong that I was compelled to make my own list:
Captain James T. Kirk: Bard. But not in the "slutty rock star" way, in the "genuine renaissance man who can do at least a bit of everything" way. Kirk is the guy who read the entire player's guide cover to cover and built a character who would be the most useful in the widest array of situations.
Commander Spock: Monk. Everyone assumes he'd be a wizard, and I can see why because he's a scientist and he's terrifyingly intelligent, but this fails to account for the way that his strict "logic over emotion" ethic is so central to his character, or the fact that his wisdom score is at least as high as his int. He's also got pretty insane physical strength, and a lot of his abilities come from his meditative practices. Plus there's the psychic abilities he has, which I would put down as a kind of monk-magic.
Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy: World's angriest paladin. Refused to let everyone else run off without a healer. Is a healer in the way that makes you very aware that healers are all doms.
Lt. Commander Montgomery Scott: Artificer. Nuff said.
Lt. Hikaru Sulu: Bard, but the kind who's an acrobat. His job on the ship is pilot, and he's the best damn pilot in all of Starfleet. We don't see this as much in TOS, because they didn't have the ability to do cool scenes of the ships flying around, but Sulu could fly the Enterprise through a needle with room to spare.
Lt. Nyota Uhura: Another bard. She's the friggin comm's officer! That means she's a linguist and a radio operator (something people forget was an actually necessary and technically demanding job). She also canonically is a beautiful singer and dancer.
Ensign Pavel Chekov: Here's our wizard. Hear me out. Chekov is the ship's navigator (another job that seems to be somewhat forgotten in contemporary sci-fi). Everything he does is based on intelligence, he's a little bit of a nerpus (low wisdom), and he works off of careful study and calculation. My guy was doing calculations for interstellar space plans using something slightly more advanced than an old DOS computer.

Synopsis:
The crew of the USS Enterprise was assigned to survey a sector of the galaxy known as the Delta Triangle. More precisely, to research about the mysterious disappearance of a high number of starships on the region from ancient times.
Tumblr media
Once there, the ship had a massive failiure of its sensors and to make the situtation worse, they were received by a squadron of three Klingon battlecruisers, Captain Kirk orders Lieutenant Sulu to fire phasers to the IKS Klothos. The shoots made point blank on the Klingonian vessel but it disappeared, not destroyed.
Tumblr media
One commander of the remaining two Klingon ships blamed Kirk, but the captain decides to move forward to the same place the Klothos was at maximum warp speed. As closer it gets to the place, the ship's crew felt very dizzy by the effect of an ion storm. Suddenly, they were in a place the captain describes as “an interstellar Sargasso Sea” filled with a lot of centuries-old alien starships. One of them, the USS Bonaventure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Entrerprise had another encounter with the Klothos, but right at the moment both of the captains orders to attack their foes, they were suddenly transported to one of the ships. The one that gathers the Ruling Council of the area named Elysia. That council is composed of 123 races that learned to live peacefully over one thousand years. Every act of violence is punished severely. It is not a parallel universe, is a place with no stars nor planets, a place where time ceased to move, a pocket in the garment of time.
Tumblr media
Captain Kirk and Captain Kor are facing charges of committing acts of violence and they are both facing a sentence of a hundred years of immobilization of their ships and crew. The council's leader, a Romulan named Xerius pardons both of the captains due to their ignorance of Elysia's law. They were turned back to their respective ships.
Tumblr media
At the Ruling Council, an alien female with psionic powers named Magen perceived both of the crews from the Enterprise and the Klothos are planning to escape. Another of the Ruling Council members, an Orion slave girl named Devna was opposed to that idea because she deemed they will die and appealed to Xerius to stop them but the council's leader told her it does not infringe any of the Elysian's laws to try to escape from there.
Tumblr media
At the Enterprise, Kirk tries to find the way to escape from there. He has to do something quickly before the disintegration of the dilithium crystals. The Klingons tried first, but they were unsuccessful. Spock devises a formula based on the failure of the Klingonian ship. He proposes Kirk a solution by linking both their ship and the one of their foes using both warp drives together as one.
Tumblr media
During the gathering of both captains and first officers aboard the Klothos, Spock showed very friendly with the Klingons. It made Doctor McCoy very suspicious about the welfare of their first officer. He asks Kirk to talk with him about the subject and he agrees. Spock tells the captain that he felt the thoughts of the Klingonian officers and knows that although is not clear for him, they are planning something evil.
Tumblr media
The Elysians celebrated a party for both Federation and Klingonian crews. After performing a dance, Devna told to the federation captain that she wanted to be on her home planet again but she thinks it is impossible to move out from this place and begs Kirk not to try. He told her that his home may not be perfect as Elysia, but it is his home no matter its imperfections. Also, during the feast, a Klingon officer started a fight with McCoy. Both ships' captains were on trial by the ruling council again as responsible for the conduct of their crews.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This time, Kirk begs pardon for Kor and his crew because they need them so much for their escape plan. Xerius understood Kirk's intentions and granted the way out of the punishment to the Klingons. During the trial, a female Klingonian officer named Kaz, put an explosive capsule in the warp drive control computer system of the Enterprise.
As the launch of both of the ships' begins, Magen perceived the sabotage to the federation's ship by their counterparts. And the council sends the message to Kirk. Spock throws out the capsule out of the ship before it explodes at warp 8. Both of the ships made their way out of Elysia. Kor takes all the credit for their success, but it is unimportant to Kirk.
Tumblr media
Fascinating Facts:
This episode was written by actress and writer Joyce Perry. It was inspired by legend of the Bermuda Triangle. A region located between Bermuda, Florida and Puerto Rico. According to the myth, there was a lot of mysterious disappearance of ships and airplanes in that area. An urban legend very popular in the second half of the 20th century. It was the source of inspiration for many science fiction and fantasy works of that time.
Also, it is a mention of the Sargasso sea. A region in the north of the Atlantic Ocean that has an abundant brown seaweed called sargassum. It also bounded by four currents forming an ocean gyre.
Tumblr media
This is the second time the Klingon character, Kor has appeared in a episode. The first time was in a season one episode, “Errand Of Mercy”. It was played by actor John Colicos. He was not available at the time this episode, the voice for Kor was played by James Doohan. Colicos returned to the Kor character years later for three episodes of Deep Space Nine.
Tumblr media
This is the last time the Klingons made their appearance with smooth foreheads. Years later, their appearance changed for the 1979 film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Tumblr media
This is the episode were Nichelle Nichols played the most characters in a single episode. A total of four: Uhura, Devna, Magen and Kaz.
Tumblr media
Most of the designs for the starships stuck in the area of Elysia were unapproved designs for the insectoid pod starship from the pilot episode, “To The Farthest Of The Stars”.
