REVIEW

I loooved this episode! I thought it was great :D. Very dramatic :)), but everything still worked out! And somehow they did manage to make it so it wasn't the nephew, or like- not quite not his fault, but that he wasn't totally off the rails, he was being manipulated <3. Crazy stuff :D. And like, sure, we saw a lot of Owen being a savior and all that lol, but eh, it's a drama show :)). Owen's gonna Owen, and I'm just gonna enjoy the episode anyway <333. Also the 126 was great this episode :D. Loved actually seeing them xD. I know we did last week but still yk it's nice :)). I do miss Marjan though 😭.

Anyway! It's time for the individual parts :))

Quick, first off! Marjan :')). I MISS HER SO MUCHHH 😭😭😭. LIKE Y'ALLLLL 😭😭😭❤️❤️💔. But I know she's happy out on the road right now <33, and I also know that out of universe wise she will be coming back at some point :)). So, I'm holding out for that and having hope <33. I still miss her though :'D. I love her <333.

Okay, now for the people whow ere actually in the episode lol.

Tommy! She was great this episode :D. I'm glad she helped figure out where the bomb was 🥰🥰, and that it wasn't just Owen lol. But seriously, she's observant, and she's a paramedic captain - it totally makes sense that she would notice if something was amiss with one of them. So, proud of her for that :)). I'm definitely nervous for her next episode 😭😭. It would SUCK if she actually does have to break up with him for her kids :((. Because like I said, I like them together, but more importantly I want her to be happy. I'd say there's probably several reasons the girls could not want them dating (or maybe it's just one of them! I can't them apart, not when it was just one shot of one of them at least lol. Or probably at all xD), like because he's the pastor, or because they just don't like him, or because they're not ready for Tommy to be with someone new. But, whatever it is, I hope it all works out and everyone's happy <33. Anyway, Tommy was amazing this episode, as always 🥰🥰. And obviously, though we didn't see tol much of it, great at her job :)). I love her :DD ❤️.

Nancy! She was great 🥰🥰. By the way, I couldn't figure out a good way to split people up, so I'm just gonna do them all individually lol. Anyway, she was great this episode :D. Plus we got a little Nanteo moment 🥰🥰. Lovely, love them :DD. But honestly I'm still stuck on her maimed line at the beginning XD. It was so good lol <3. Anyway, she was great in the work sense too :), and even though we didn't see her do too much this episode, she was there and she was being awesome <33. We just didn't see a lot of anyone doing their jobs what with a bomb to be following and all lol. But, yeah xD. I love her 🥰🥰🥰❤️.

Mateo! Btw yes I know it's been several days, everything after "Mateo!" is, but I've been busy lol. It also means it'll probably be shorter bc I need to get this done lol. Anyway! Mateo lol. I love him 🥰🥰. Little Nanteo moment :DD. Lovely, my babeys <333. And him being the only one who knew (in that moment at least) the laughing gas fact xD. Nice callback tbh :)). Anyway, he was great at his job, as always :D.

Paul :). Just as the others, he was amazing at his job :D. And also their silliness in the beginning of the episode, while maybe a bit inappropriate, was still adorable xD 🥰. And that includes Paul sooo I'm saying it here lol :). Anyway, his bit near the beginning with Judd was great lol - like wonderinf what Owen was doing there and whatnot xD. But yeah, as always he was awesome :p. I love him ❤️❤️!

Judd! Nice to see our boy as interim captain again :D. It's always fun to see him take on that responsibility, and he can definitely manage it. He did great, and with everything else too :)))! Also his little text to Grace ❤️. I love them your honor 😭 <33. But yeah he was amazing this episode, especially with having Owen's back the whole time lol. Like at the end with the firetruck (all of them did <3 but yk). So yeah! I love him 🥰🥰🥰.

Grace :DD. Our girl SLAYED this episode 🥰🥰. Finding that river for Owen to drive into? Amazing :D. And with the other calls too :). And again, the text from Judd 😭😭❤️. Also her background being Judd :'DD - I can't <33. I love them so much, my babeys :'))). But yeah! She was awesome this episode ❤️❤️. I just have to mention the last call again - she comprehended what was going on (a feat of its own lol), she set up the timer (which was less than 2 minutes if I remember correctly), she found a problem with where Owen was going and then found two more solutions, and she figured out that the water would deactivate the ANFO. Like!!! AAHHH!! She slayed 🥰🥰🥰. I love her :DDD ❤️!!

TK! He was great 🥰🥰. As always, he was amazing at his job :p. And that moment when Owen was going into the capital and he was just like "*Sigh* I really hate it when he does this :/" XDDD. Icon fr. And of course, the TARLOS SCENE :DDD. I mean barely Tarlos but yk they were both there in their house talking about the wedding sooo whatever lol xD. Anyway, it was AMAZING :DD. I'll talk about it more in a second with Carlos lol. Anyway, TK was great as always this episode :)). I love him ❤️❤️❤️.

Speaking of, Carlos! He went OFF this episode :D. Him staying to help O'Brien, looking for where the bomb was made and such, and then SHOOTING MIKEY!!! I'm glad he didn't kill him though lol. But fr it was SUCH A SLAY MOMENT!!! He seriously looked SO cool :DDD. Anyway, he was great at his job 🥰. And the end scene :D. Stop he was so adorable 🥰🥰. They both were :D. And AAAHHHH wedding talk! I loved it it was so funny and cute xD :D. TK and Carlos were just like "welp. This is happening" and Owen was OFF lol. "Off" like, "aaand they're off" lol. Anyway, Carlos was great this episode :D. I love him 🥰🥰🥰!

Owen! He was great :). And like, okay, yeah, he was the hero and whatever. It's not my favorite thing ever, but like- you sign up for a certain thing when you watch Lone Star lol, yk? So, that said, with a little half-affectionate roll of my eyes 🙄, I probably won't mention it from here on it and I'll just treat him like another character. SO! Glad Owen had that talk with everyone, kind of apologizing - bc tbh he was putting their lives in danger (not on purpose), and also it was DRAMATIC AS HECK :D. I loved it, I thought it was epic. Besides that, he realized the bomb was a decoy! And he had the good sense to call Grace when he was driving the bomb away (which was CRAZY btw lol). And I did genuinely expect him to try and push the ambulance further in, like jump half in and then try and back out xD. But I'm SO GLAD the 126 showed up. And the laughing gas but was hilarious XD. Also, I'm glad Owen managed to talk Andy, well, not quite down, but out :). And Andy thanking all of them was really sweet <3. And he thanked Owen in particular so that was nice :). Also, Owen comforting Ty, and then (as I saw mentioned more jokingly in a post lol) after seeing an emotional father-son type thing moment went to see TK 😭😭😭❤️. Lovely :'DD <333. Also, he was kinda right at the beginning, but I'm glad he chilled out a bit by the end. Anyway, he was great this episode <3!!! I love him :)).

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. Both sides of the bomb plot were cool, Owen's side and O'Brien's side, and I honestly didn't suspect that they would redeem Andy! But, somehow, they managed it lol. I'm glad his family's okay :)). But yeah! I'm happy they managed to disarm (well, minimize the damage of lol) the bomb and that everybody was safe :D. Plus, a bit of Tarlos 🥰🥰. And a mention for Marjan <33. As she deserves :'DD. But yeah, everyone was great this episode!! They all did amazing and there were some really adorable and funny moments amongst all the drama, which was nice lol. But, all the drama worked out in the end :D. Next week looks like it's gonna be interesting! I hope everything works out with Tommy <33. I'm wondering if maybe her girls won't like the pastor's kid? Idk, but it'll be interesting! And hopefully we'll see Grace since she was in the promo, but who knows ┐⁠(⁠ ⁠∵⁠ ⁠)⁠┌. Plus that upside lady looks crazy!! Like, it looks like it'll be a crazy (but good) storyline. Plus it'll give us a chance to see Tommy's skill alongside her personal life :D. Who knows if it'll be the other full plot, but it looks cool nonetheless :)). Also, back to this week, I TOTALLY did not expect it to be that kid lol. Like, Mikey, I did not recognize him when he first came up behind O'Brien xD. Still, that was WILD!! I really enjoyed it though, it was a crazy but fun storyline all together :)).

So yeah! I loved this episode, and I'm glad the bomb threat is over. Next episode looks wild! This has been my review of. . .

A lesser show would use Gay Week to introduce queer content and possibly have it for only one episode as a special. But on this show? It’s always queer and the function of Gay Week is showing and explicitly talking about polyamory the entire time, setting up a polyamory slow burn.

I think while there is some obvious flaw with TP, for instance its pacing issue. But another lesser problem it has is how unbalance Basilone's storyline is. Speilberg and Hank really can't make these war show without some mythical hero-ism. No offense to the real life Basilone who I know is a really cool dude, but this storyline imo lacks the depth that Leckie's and Sledge's have.

this is my fun way of responding to the alternate universe prompt for @rinaweek <3. rina and their parents in every universe, finding each other and falling in love. alsooo this post was slightly inspired by this absolutely brilliant edit linked here (x) and if you want rinatroyella or rinajacey edits, please lmk and I'll send my favorite ones <3333

the essays that can and have been written about troyella and rina are extensive (and I'm happy to do a longer form one in a separate post). but from being the new girl x boy who's never moved, girl encouraging boy to audition for the musical and actually commit, kissing in the rain, starring in the school musical together, to making a huge commitment to the other person on a stage in front of a bunch of people, rina is quite literally troyella reincarnated. and yeah, lots of people can argue that troyella is perfect as is, that they didn't need another version. and on one hand, i agree. but the way in which rina takes core parts of troyella's story while standing on their own as a ship is beautiful and truly does justice to the original franchise by anchoring the story around these two, both individually and as a couple, just as was done with troyella in the original trilogy. my favorite troyella parallel moment from s4!

4x01 - ricky sneaking into gina's room just like troy would come into gabriella's room through her balcony

4x02 - the note ricky gives gina in the hallway to meet in their secret staircase is just like the note troy slips in gabriella's locker in hsm to meet on the rooftop. (honorable mention to them auditioning for and getting the roles of troy and gabriella in this ep as well <33)

4x03 - of course, it has to go to their rendition of can i have this dance. their voices sound gorgeous and though the choreo they do has similarities to the original, they've made it their own.

4x04 - this one is kinda reaching but I wanted something for each ep! in hsm2, sharpay forces troy to sing a song with her, one she prepared for the talent show, instead of allowing him to go on a date with gabriella. in a similar vein, though with considerably less scheming from dani's side, dani is selected to replace gina as gabriella because she is so busy with the movie, though this is done behind her back.

4x05 - has to go to the rain kiss obviously. although troy and gabriella only ever kiss under sprinklers, it's the same vibes. there's also a still (not included in the scene) of the rain kiss of ricky holding gina's waist as she throws her arms up that's so reminiscent of troyella in the rain during cihtd.

4x06 - ricky and gina running down the hallway at the beginning of the episode feels like a direct parallel to troy and gabriella running to auditions in hsm. also rina fighting to save the show is super similar to gabriella (and troy once gabriella convinces him) pushing for the theater department to put on a show about them for their spring musical.

4x07 - they're literally playing troyella in this ep so I could say so much. i'll just use this space to talk about how much I love them in a night to remember and how much it looked like they were dancing at their wedding. I will say that terri, gina's mom, telling ricky about gina's movie with a smile on her face, reminds me a lot of gabriella's fans setting troy up to talk shit about her on camera to convince her to focus on the decatholon. also reflects sharpay telling troy about stanford, again with a smile on her face.

4x08 - again, this ep is rife with toryella coding because they're literally playing troyella, but the show goes super meta in having them sing the right here, right now reprise as ricky has just found out that gina is potentially moving across the world to film her movie, just as troy finds out about stanford and struggles with gabriella not being there for the rest of their senior year. on a much less angsty note, ricky singing love you forever to gina has the same vibes as troy choosing gabriella and going to school close to her, not to mention that lines in the song directly reference the song "high school musical" (which you can read more about here <3). gina also deciding to move the movie to salt lake is very much her "I choose basketball but I also choose theater but more than all of that, I choose gabriella" her version is "I choose filming this movie but I also choose theater but more than all of that, I choose ricky" just a beautiful perfect scene all around.

these s4 moments only scratch the surface of the troyellarina tether but i'll stop ranting for now and move on to rina's teen drama parent sets.

jacey

after s1, tim federle did an interview where they asked him about him about the ricky / nini / gina triangle, he directly mentioned dawson's creek in guiding his writing process, stating that at the center of his thought process was "how do I surprise audience members with who they're going to ship?" (x). for those who don't know the jacey lore, to make a long story short, their love triangle centered around joey, pacey, and dawson. joey and dawson were childhood best friends and joey has a crush on dawson. pacey and dawson are best friends and joey and pacey do not get along initially. after events of life, dawson asks pacey to "look after joey" at the beginning of s3, the two get super close and eventually catch feelings for each other and they secretly date as they figure out a way to break it to dawson (sound familiar?). they do break up but come back together at the end of the show and are endgame. the parallels between jacey and rina exist both on and off screen. dawson and joey were the initial endgame for the show, just like rini was the show's s1 endgame. however, electrifying chemistry between katie and joshua (jackson) & sofia & joshua (bassett) in their respective shows changed everything. rina is one of the strongest examples of continuing this legacy of disrupting the initial plans concocted in the writer's room to make way for insane chemistry. some of my fave jaceyrina parallels

rina and jacey having a formative, chemistry presenting moment in a car (rina in 1x05 during homecoming, joey and pacey in 1x during their science project)

the sheer parallels between them in 3x19 of dawson's creek and 3x08 of hsmtmts with their kiss scenes. just watch here (x) and here (x) to see. the "stop me" "wait" parallels actually make me go crazy

joey tutoring pacey in 3x09 and gina (presumably) becoming ricky's tutor after 4x06

i'm rewatching 3x09 in preparation for this and jacey has a scene where dawson catches them talking about pacey helping joey with a ballroom dance scholarship thing in exchange for tutoring and he asks them what no one can find out about and a) pacey sucksssss at improv just like gina it's like that 4x02 scene with rina and ashlyn and b) it also feels like rina with the chocolates, again with ashlyn LMAOOO in 2x04

ALSO in this ep (wow it's a goldmine), when dawson and jen catch joey and pacey ballroom dancing, they're forced to join the class and the instructor psychoanalyzes both couples. for jacey, she mentions that the tension and bickering between them suggests their underlying attraction for one another. this is literally what val (their choreographer!!) does after watching rina perform wdykal in 3x05

too much to explain for the final scene of this episode but i just encourage everyone to watch 3x09 to get the same sense of a major scene in a coat check and an ensuing apology

pacey telling joey he remembers everything in 3x22 and ricky telling gina he's never forgotten a thing she's said in 4x03

pacey telling joey that the simple act of loving her is enough for him and that she's "off the hook" and ricky telling gina that of course she has to go and be a star, as well as singing lyf not knowing that she was staying in slc, so he just wanted to let her know that he loved her for the sake of it, not to convince her of anything

pacey having to tell joey something but lying to protect her (and ricky having something to tell gina but lying to protect her (3x07)

naley

another paragon of teen drama royalty is naley. literally the best people ever and it makes sooo much sense that rina is similar to them because they're actually rina's grandparents. naley birthed troyella, who birthed rina. a beautiful family tree. anyways, naley doesn't seem to, on the surface at least, seem to have a lot of parallels to rina. a shy tutor girl and a cocky basketball player who get married after knowing each other for less than a year? (though I will go down with my headcanon that rina gets married super duper young, will not be taking any arguments). despite this, at their core, naley's love for each other is so reminiscent of rina's love for each other, not to mention some incredibly direct parallels that the two have, listed below:

nathan dropping haley home after a party & ricky dropping gina home after homecoming ("yeah, this is my house" & "so, this is where I live")

connecting over dubious circumstances (nathan requesting haley as a tutor/getting close to her to get back at lucas & gina convincing ricky to stay in the show so she could get gabriella, attending hoco with ej to psych nini out but instead connecting with ricky)

nathan putting haley's hand to his heart after telling her it's racing (it was because of drugs but still, it beats for haley) and ricky putting gina's hand on his heart after telling her that his heart's racing (i'm telling y'all this scene is the same, just with the characters and setting swapped)

alllllll of naley's s2 angst is like the intense and more painful version of rina's angst in s4

naley invented rain kisses (even if they existed before them, no they didn't) and rina obviously does justice with their own rain kiss in 4x05

this isn't even an original hc, but it's a narrative that im choosing to believe n abide by cuz it feels so (W)RIGHT! from what i remember, dating way wayyyy back to "spencer spooks", hugh was apparently a rockstar pre- and post- the family move. since theres no indication that hugh has associated w this lifestyle in dtmg, i decided to settle for a little twist that i think exists in another spencer property. that being he's a former rocker, now retired. pretty much, he left that whole situation behind him, turning over a new leaf n all that- opting to take on the responsibility of being a proper father to his kid (kids* later on) than pursuing a now dead dream. besides, there are other creative outlets to explore, and he, for one, loves to tinker around w things!

there's this episode that mentions how he was a former cheerleading coach. we had no context for this prior to this episode, but i don't necessarily want to ignore that (even if it WAS just mentioned for the sake of one episode). i figure that the whole cheerleading bit also happened while jane was pregnant - a profession more stable in terms of income, but not quite. getting a degree in accounting was that last resort. that, and i also just REALLY REALLY like the idea of "gravity's rainbow" being a stunt that had originated from his past performances. IM TAKING IN HUGH LORE A LITTLE TOO SERIOUSLY HE SAID SMTH ABT MOVING BACK TO COW COUNTRY BRUH WHAT HAVENT YOU DONE BYE

jane was also a rockstar in the show's prior concepts i think, but uhhh i highkey fw the idea that jane was hugh's former groupie turned hairstylist. they fell in love, obvi, and rather than forego her hobby, she just stuck true and blue with it n ultimately decided to make that her career.

this is such a scatterbrained jumbled mess so im just gonna drop bullet notes in nonsensical order AHHAHAHHSHAHH

. hugh was an underground hard rocker w a few close friends as his bandmates - their bond now rendered a distant memory. he used to live life on the road, jamming from one open venue to another. he was the lead guitarist, certainly no jimi hendrix. anyone within earshot of his sound, n those w even an ounce of sense, could tell he was no disciplined guitarist. he loved to play, and when he played, he played LOUD w a voice to boot. he wrote songs occasionally, and they were pretty straightforward. his lyrics weren’t exactly “highbrow” either, far from it. they were mostly just about how he felt at that moment in time - very "youth rebellion" where either nothing mattered anymore or everything did. he wasn't all too concerned with selling those lyrics out, though. . hugh never really drew in much of a crowd with his music. it didnt warrant a complete audience, not exactly. maybe rounded up a few enjoyers here and there, but none of them were really any dedicated (save for a very enthusiastic red head who kept appearing at every one of his shows). as with his eccentric personality, he never much minded any of that. music for him was just a form of expression. sure, he dreamed big, but it was never about being signed into a label or appealing to people. moreover, he HATED labels and in concept, their controlling nature. . spencer and jessica are completely unaware of their father's past. hugh and jane didnt have a specific reason for not telling them about what they were up to way back when. i have it in mind that at some point, they'd probably mention it through some offhand comment w the excuse that "it just never came up!" . hugh never burned his songs into cds, or any tapes for that matter. a shame, now that his kids would rather much have their hands on audible proof rather than rambunctious nights captured in cheap little polaroids. he'd comment that it had never occurred to him at the time, but jane chimes in. she's got it all covered in a camcorder, stored who knows where, but as far as she knows it's definitely in their home somewhere. a search party montage later they find it, but they can hardly make out the static being recorded - yet another shame. he confesses he still has his guitar, something he could never bring himself to part ways with, and he's asked if he remembers the chords, lyrics - anything. he does, vaguely, but for his family, well, he figures he can come up with something on the spot. that's how he worked after all! (it's certainly something. music? debatable. jane falls in love all over again. as for the kids? opinions are mixed, but one thing is for sure: their dad is pretty cool. a certain ghost seems to agree.) . i hc that the rest of the wrights would eventually be introduced to billy proper. theyd b able to see him - the whole nine yards! i saw this little doodle of dirk n the old man, and im a SUCKER for these kinds of thingssss i dunnooo. im ALSO a sucker for the ppl around billy influencing him for the better, and i can totally see hugh playing a part in potentially inspiring billy to do just that in the hugh-est way possible. i picture them mindlessly jamming together freestyle; bonding over their shared love and appreciation for music not just as an outlet, but as an entity- to reconnect w it by any n every intrinsic means necessary. It's a long way's home from "perfect". composed solely on improv n zero structure, its disorderly at best, but it helps in breaking the habit of having to constantly perform for someone to performing for absolutely no one at all. a sound no one else will hear: an art for no one! its hardly ever that serious with these these two, and ykw that's okay! they get each other. they're on their own little wave-length :)

. before i call this post quits, there's this one scene that i like to perceive in a specific way. in axe maniac, there's this flashback - a christmas with the wright's and their little spence. one of the wrapped gifts is a guitar, and ik it may seem reasonable to believe that it was given to spencer on billy's behalf, but me personally, i like to think that the gift was from hugh !! as enthusiastic as he was to introduce spence to the world of music, his boy did not end up picking up after him. doesnt matter! it's not in hugh's nature to force this kind of thing onto him. he's always been supportive of spencer's hobbies no matter how peculiar, and if there's one thing that makes him happy and connected enough, it's their shared moments being captured through the lense of his son's camera <333
