Louise Toupin

Do you have books or poetry that you reread at specific times/seasons/moods?
Oh hiiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not a great re-reader to be completely honest with you because i read so slowly that it feels like wasted time a little bit. There are works that I revisit and read sections of or associate really strongly with the seasons though. I think I prefer lighter stuff in the summer and as the months get colder, then my reading tastes get weirder or more non-fiction-y?
Like Spring is Romantic/Light Academia Season so books like:
The Silver Horn of Robin Hood; The Outlaws of Sherwood by Robin McKinley; all of Jane Austen; Anne of Green Gables; As You Like It; Much Ado About Nothing with poems like "The Highwayman"; "The Hound of Heaven"; "A Passionate Shepherd to His Love"; Song of Songs; "How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count the Ways"; Joy Davidman's sonnets to C.S. Lewis but particularly Sonnet XXIX; Shakespeare's Sonnet 29.
Summer is like the Epics/Adventure/Series/General Escapism:
Stephen Fry's Troy; The Iliad; Swiss Family Robinson; all of Sharon Kay Penman's books i love this woman rip queen; The Queen's Thief books by Meghan Whalen Turner aka the greatest story ever told; I also love reading some Amy Tan's books; mysteries series like i love a Longmire book in the summer; middle grade stuff like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson; with poems like "When I Have Crossed the Bar"; "Annabel Lee" by Poe; "Having a Coke with You" by Frank O'Hara and honestly this is spicy but also "Please Master" by Allen Ginsberg i'm not sorry
Autumn is like Dark Academia/Classics:
The Oresteia; The Odyssey; Trojan Women; The Silence of the Girls; Great Expectations; The Matthew Shardlake mysteries; I just read If We Were Villains and The Essex Serpent which are both very dark academia; love a book about an author like I'm really looking forward to reading the biography of Margaret Wise Brown that came out recently; Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber; Antony Sherr's The Year of the King; George Bernard Shaw's commentaries on Shakespeare. Poems/collections like Averno and The Meadowlands by Louise Gluck; October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepherd
Winter is like I'm Reading By the Fire, Comfort Me
I mean like blah blah i genuinely love A Christmas Carol; Jack London's A Call of the Wild; Sherlock Holmes stories; The Once and Future King by T.H. White; Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis; A Child's Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas; poems like "The Shortest Day" by Susan Cooper; A Letter to a Friend by Fra Giovanni; “The Lament of Art O’Leary”; my grandmother's favorite poem "The Cremation of Sam McGee" by Robert W. Service; "Do not go gently into that good night" also by Dylan Thomas; "Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening" and "The Impulse" by Robert Frost
What about you???

my reading list
hello all! i am severely lacking in content to post, so I am easing myself into the blogger life by starting off with an adorable, rather simple post instead of one of the content heavy ones which are a work in progress (rather anxious about getting my info correct). here is my reading list!! ive tried to eliminate the book i am reading and have to read for my sixth form classes but it is as follows;
the picture of dorian gray by oscar wilde status: currently reading
i had initially heard of this book when longingly glancing at the summary in waterstones when weeding through the penguin classics section. from first read the book encapsulated me and i was head over heels. genuinely wanted this book for about 7 plus months until christmas came around and there it was gleaming on top of the sofa. love u gran and grandad xxxx.
my fascination and love of this book has only grown over time - deep diving into faust and faustian pacts after reading a quote in chapter 1 of wharton’s age of innocence had, in a rather modern sense, ‘increased the hype’. anyways, i am indeed only on about chapter 3 but i think this may be becoming a favourite of mine. (would anyone be interested in knowing what my favourite books are?)
the way of all flesh by ambrose pary status: currently reading
i can’t lie, it was the author’s name that caught my eye. after doing the ‘medicine through time’ unit in gcse history, and learning about renaissance surgeon, ambrose paré, ambrose parry had definitely sparked an interest, and to be honest i’m sure 15 year old me found it quite cool. no surprise here, its historical fiction!
but unlike the historical fiction pieces i already own, it is a historical mystery set in 1847 and follows will raven, a medical student in edinburgh, yet begins chapter one with a dead prostitute. rather classy, yes? i began reading this in the hotel during my brief family holiday to london and read more while waiting for the train home. needless to say i am engrossed entirely. have a feeling this is going to be a good one :)!
darcy’s voyage: a pride and predjudice retelling by kara louise status: in the queue...
i picked this one up for £2.50 (no literally - the price is still pencilled in on the inside of the cover) from barter books (a.k.a heaven on earth). allthough i do have the timeless jane austen original on my shelf in my bedroom, i’m perplexingly tempted to read this one first; a coveted break away from 19th century romance in a manor house in the middle of nowhere. i haven’t yet dived into the pages yet but am excited to do so. i have my fingers crossed this will be a refreshing perspective on classic tropes and romance while still keeping the heart-wrenching storyline.
if i never met you by mhairi mcfarlane status: read 2 chapters but then i fell in love with dorian gray instead
this screams rom-com wattpad original but let me tell you i am all here for it. just from reading the aforementioned two chapters, mcfarlane has set the plot in motion extremely well and i was picturing the movie in my mind when reading.
the mixture of formats is refreshing and it reminds me of the layout of one of my favourite books; the next together by lauren james (reincarnation meets lovers throughout history). i can confirm that i am heavily excited to carry on reading, but am forcing myself into commitment of just one book for the mean time.
honourable mentions: a.k.a everything that is also on the ‘read next’ list but i feel as though i’m droning on enough already: the shadow of the hangman by edward marston death of an avid reader by francis brody the victorian house by judith flanders antony and cleopatra by william shakespeare the flat share by beth o’leary words in deep blue by cath crowley

books (in the time of corona)
PART I: ADULT EDITION
Let’s get real--we’re all going fucking insane.
Therefore, I’m recommending some books with which you can kill time. I’m breaking them into categories--the romance category including several subgenres but by and large covering books that focus more heavily on the romance than anything else. These will all be adult books; I’m doing a separate page for YA recommendations.
I’ll be adding to this list as I finish books that I feel belong here.
ROMANCE
A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux. A young woman is abandoned by her scoundrel of a boyfriend, only to find a literal medieval knight in shining armor. Pure 80′s cheese, a classic in the time travel subgenre long before Outlander ever happened.
The Circle Trilogy by Nora Roberts. Six sexy people, three men and three women in Roberts fashion, travel across time and parallel dimensions to fight an evil vampire and her undead army. Come for three fun romances, stay in particular for the “virgin bookworm queen captures the heart of the formerly evil 1,000 Irish vampire” ship.
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. Rival coworkers who’ve always hated each other compete for the same job--until maybe? They start? Hooking up?
From Lukov with Love by Mariana Zapata. A down on her luck singles figure skater pairs up with the pairs champion she’s always despised... Unless they in fact, in a STUNNING TWIST, do not hate each other?
Pestilence by Laura Thalassa. A BIT ON THE NOSE RIGHT NOW, but I promise that this tale of a hot virgin Horseman of the Apocalypse spreading his plague and the one woman brave enough to fuck him is WORTH IT. As is the sequel, War.
My Lady’s Choosing by Kitty Curran. A literal choose your own adventure novel, but the adventures bodice ripping Regency romance plots!!!
The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang. A sweet and smart woman on the autism spectrum hires a male escort to teach her to be good at sex. Shit goes DOWN from there.
The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary. She works days; he works nights. She needs a cheap place to stay, and he needs a roommate. So they share a flat and even a bed (sleeping on opposite sides and never at the same time) only communicating through post-it notes throughout the apartment. What could go wrong?
Marriage for One by Ella Maise. She can only get her inheritance if she’s married. Good thing a glacial attorney has offered to marry her out of nowhere, only for paper purposes. What could go wrong???
The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa. Lina is a wedding planner who was left at the altar. Max is the younger brother of the man who left her, and apparently convinced him to do the leaving. What happens when they work together?
Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert. Chloe suffers from a chronic illness, which means that she’s never had a life--and so she compiles a list that will help her get one. On the list? Meaningless sex. Which she won’t have with her building’s superintendent, even though he’s really down to help her cross off all the other items, riiiight?
HISTORICAL FICTION
Passion by Jude Morgan. The dramatic and intense height of Romantic England, told from the perspectives of Caroline Lamb, mistress of Lord Byron; August Leigh, his sister and lover; Mary Shelley; and Fanny Brawne, fiancee of John Keats.
Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier. Impoverished Griet becomes a maid in the household of the painter Vermeer, becoming his muse after he realizes that she has a natural eye--much to the dismay of his wife.
Snow Flower and The Secret Fan by Lisa See. In nineteenth century China, best friends Lily and Snow Flower follow each other through emotional and cultural revolutions, communicating through the secret language of fans.
The Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George. Cleopatra recounts her life story, from her earliest memory, through her affairs with Caesar and Antony, and her end.
Mistress of Rome by Kate Quinn. In Domitian’s Rome, a Jewish girl rises from the position of lady’s slave to the emperor’s mistress through wiles and scheming.
The Tiger Queens by Stephanie Thornton. The rise and fall of Genghis Khan’s empire, as told through the women of his family--from his favorite wife to a clever daughter-in-law.
At the Water’s Edge by Sara Gruen. A socialite follows her incompetent to Scotland as he struggles to find the Loch Ness Monster and redeem his ancestor’s name--finding herself and questioning her life in the process.
A Year of Ravens. A collection of short stories by different authors, all centering on Boudica’s rebellion through the eyes of her countrymen and her enemies.
Feast of Sorrow by Crystal King. A slave becomes a chef in the treacherous household of a social climber struggling to gain the favor or Caesar August.
Fatal Throne. Six authors tell the stories of Henry VIII’s wives, all from their differing perspectives.
Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The rise and fall of a 1970s rock band is charted through the recollections of its members--as they recall what drove them apart, and in particular the intense relationship between the leader singers.
THRILLERS
The Girl in 6E by A.R. Torre. A woman with murderous impulses locks herself in her apartment to keep the public safe, making a living as a camgirl. She’s left torn between morals and impulse when she begins to suspect that one of her “fans” is dangerous.
Little Deaths by Emma Flint. In 1960s America, a single mother finds her personal life and image called into question when she’s accused of murdering her two young children.
My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite. A nurse covers up her beautiful sister’s murders, only to be caught between loyalties when the doctor she loves falls for said sister.
The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine. A plain “nobody” transforms herself in order to steal a high society housewife’s husband, only to deal with more than she bargained for.
The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. A woman obsesses over her ex-husband’s new fiancee, leading her to disturbing lengths.
The Other Woman by Sandie Jones. After meeting her ideal man, a woman must contend with his possessive mother, who will do anything to maintain her hold over him.
Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman. A couple on their dream honeymoon find something in the water that will change the course of their life together.
The Au Pair by Emma Rous. The day Seraphine and her twin brother were born, their mother flung herself off a cliff and their nanny disappeared. Decades later, Seraphine discovers a photo taken of her parents just before her mother’s death--with only one baby. The only person who holds the key to the mystery? The au pair.
My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing. A couple keeps the spark alive through murder.
Lock Every Door by Riley Sager. A young woman takes a job apartment-sitting in a high-end Manhattan building. Shortly after she befriends another sitter, the girl goes missing--with everyone else acting like nothing is amiss.
The Wives by Tarryn Fisher. Thursday is one of her husband’s three wives, though she’s never met the other two. When she finally does meet the third wife, she discovers a woman far different from what she expected--and covered in bruises.
FANTASY/SUPERNATURAL/HORROR
Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier. Sorcha is the youngest of seven children in medieval Ireland. When her stepmother curses her six older brothers to live as swans, Sorcha agrees to weave them shirts of painful thistles, all the while remaining silent, to break the spell.
Black Pearls by Louise Hawes. A collection of dark fairy tale retellings.
The Incarnations by Susan Barker. A man receives letters from an anonymous source, detailing his supposed past lives throughout historical China.
Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust. A dark Snow White retelling, with a stepmother whose goals extend far beyond the princess.
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. Alex Stern is discovered as the sole survivor of a brutal multiple murder, and is promptly scooped up by a group charged with monitoring the occult societies at Yale. Now disguised as a university student, Alex must figure out who’s been murdering locals, while also hiding what happened the night she lived.
The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. A young widow in Victorian England is sent to her husband’s country estate to wait out her pregnancy, and is not alarmed to discover a “silent companion” (a painted wooden figure) in the house. But when the figure’s eyes begin following her, she is sucked into a history beyond her imagination.
Circe by Madeline Miller. The story of the woman who would seduce Odysseus, from her beginnings as a plain witch born of Helios and a mother who couldn’t care less. A classic rise to power story.
CONTEMPORARY LIT
Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal. Down on her luck Nikki takes up a job as a creative writing class instructor for the Punjabi widows in her West London neighborhood. It turns out that the widows thought she was there to teach them to write in English--which leads to the class becoming a place for them to share their stories orally instead. And it turns out that they’re a bit... erotic.
An American Marriage by Tayari Jones. Upwardly mobile newlyweds Celestina and Roy have their lives upended when Roy is falsely accused of a terrible crime and sent to prison for twelve years. When he’s released early after five, he returns home to find that Celestina has changed completely, and their marriage is entirely unknown.
Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo. A young Nigerian couple has always been against polygamy; but after the wife fails to get pregnant, her in-laws show up on their doorstep with a second wife.
NON-FICTION/MEMOIR
Harem: The World Behind The Veil by Alev Lytle Croutier. An examination of the Ottoman Empire’s harem culture, focusing on the women within.
Love For Sale: A World History of Prostitution by Nils Johan Ringal. Not really a GLOBAL history of prostitution, but a good introduction starting with ancient times and going into the cases of more recent madams in America, with a strong case for legalization worldwide.
Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire by Amanda Foreman. A readable biography of the famously scandalous and tragic duchess, to be read while you kill time rewatching “The Duchess” starring Keira Knightley.
Lucrezia Borgia: Life, Love, and Death in Renaissance Italy by Sarah Bradford. A fair but none-too-precious assessment of one of Renaissance Italy’s most controversial women, and an analysis of her relationships with her father and brother.
The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn by Eric Ives. While you’re quarantining, you might as well read the definitive Anne Boleyn biography, yes? This one is responsible for much of the modern attitude on Anne.
Queen of Fashion: What Marie Antoinette Wore to the Revolution by Caroline Weber. A fascinating analysis of Marie Antoinette’s political life through her clothes.
The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi. An analysis of the infamous, unsolved “Monster of Florence” case. One of the most gruesome serial killers in Italy’s history, the monster’s crimes were pinned on several different men, and even investigated by the prosecutor who botched the Amanda Knox case.
The Forger’s Spell: A True Story of Vermeer, Nazis, and the Greatest Art Hoax of the Twentieth Century by Edward Dolnick. An examination of the case of Han van Meegeren, a painter who forged and sold many Dutch master fakes, and the pretentious art world that let him get away with it for years.
The Secret History of the Mongol Queens: How the Daughters of Genghis Khan Rescued His Empire by Jack Weatherford. A study of the women in Genghis Khan’s family, and in particular those that kept his empire from falling to ruin after his death. A good companion read with Stephanie Thornton’s fiction novel Tiger Queens mentioned above.
Chasing Aphrodite: The Hunt for Looted Antiquities at the World’s Richest Museum by Jason Felch and Ralph Frammolino. How did the Getty Museum end up with so many stolen artifacts? This book aims to find out.
The Creation of Anne Boleyn by Susan Bordo. A different kind of Anne Boleyn book, studying her portrayal in culture and fiction--complete with input from Natalie Dormer following her portrayal of Anne Boleyn on The Tudors.
Blood Sisters: The Women Behind the Wars of the Roses by Sarah Gristwood. An examination of the women of the houses of Lancaster and York during their famous, long-running conflict--and how these women had an impact on battles and politics alike.
The Dragon Behind the Glass: A True Story of Power, Obsession, and the World’s Most Coveted Fish by Emily Voigt. The author delves into why people are so obsessed with the arowana, a rare and exotic fish, to the point that they’ll commit murder--and becomes wrapped up in the fascination herself.
The Rules Do Not Apply by Ariel Levy. Over the course of a month, Ariel Levy watches everything she held true in her life--her financial security, her career, her marriage, and her pregnancy--fall apart. Levy must confront what it means to live an “unconventional” and “free” life, only for that to become meaningless, and pick up the pieces.
From Here to Eternity: Traveling the World to find The Good Death by Caitlin Doughty. Doughty recounts her global travels to observe and study different funerary and death rituals, recounting and analyzing her experiences with respect and personality.
Lady Killers: Deadly Women Throughout History by Tori Telfer. A collection of female serial killers, analyzing why they did what they did and the cultural legacy they left behind.
Severed: A History of Heads Lost and Heads Found by Frances Larson. A history of decapitated human heads, and what different cultures have done with them.
From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home by Tembi Locke. Tembi Locke was never truly accepted by her husband’s Sicilian family, as a black American woman. But when Saro dies young of cancer, she finds herself more deeply entwined her in-laws, as she works to pick up the pieces. (Warning: one of the most achingly romantic books I’ve ever read; but it will destroy you.)

Books read in November
I wasn’t sure how many books I’d finish, given how much time I spent reading the news -- but upon reflection, reading the news has just cut into time spent on things like Tumblr rather than time spent reading books.
Favourite cover: The Swan Riders.
Reread: From All False Doctrine by Alice Degan (again).
Also read: Circle of Friends by Susan Mallery.
Still reading: Between Silk and Cyanide by Leo Marks, Queen’s Play by Dorothy Dunnett, and The Kinship of Secrets by Eugenia Kim.
Next up: Or What You Will by Jo Walton, Return of the Thief by Megan Whalen Turner, and maybe I’ll finally get around to Miss Bunting by Angela Thirkell.
*
Angel Mage by Garth Nix (narrated by Kristin Atherton): The audiobook was well read and I really liked the four protagonists: the musketeer, the scholar, the clerk and the student doctor. Dorotea (the scholar) was my favourite; I love the way she baffles people when she doesn’t react the way they expect her to. I didn’t enjoy hearing about the antics of the antagonist, although the final analysis of her motives was unexpectedly satisfying, and I didn’t start to get interested in the system of angel magic until the story was nearly over.
The Deadly Hours anthology: I borrowed this for Susanna Kearsley’s novella Weapon of Choice, which is set in 1733 and features a couple of characters from A Desperate Fortune (along with a couple of couples from a couple of her other novels). This has a different sort of plot from her other stories -- there’s no newly developing romance, and no contemporary storyline -- but it was interesting to see Hugh’s marriage from his perspective. I glanced at the first pages of the other novellas and the only one which caught my attention was Siren’s Call by C.S. Harris, a murder mystery set during WWII.
The Switch by Beth O’Leary: After a panic attack at work, Lena is ordered to take a sabbatical. She suggests to her grandmother Eileen that they switch lives: for two months, Lena will look after Eileen’s house and community projects in Yorkshire, while Eileen will stay with Lena’s flatmates in London and try out internet dating. It’s interesting seeing the qualities Eileen and Lena share, and the variations within those. They’re very community-minded -- I enjoyed their cross-age friendships and willingness to reach out to their neighbours. Eileen in particular made me chuckle. And the story is predictable and tidy in ways which are quite appealing.
Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett: Zorie likes planning and star-gazing. Camping’s outside her comfort zone but she hopes a trip with a school friend will be a chance to socialise more and escape tensions at home. But she’s left to hike home alone with her ex. I liked how the trip pushes Zorie and Lennon to resolve hurt feelings and misunderstandings, but the most compelling part of this story was seeing Zorie fall in love with hiking! Bennett vividly captures the challenges and the rewards of hiking through mountains in California. And I liked the close relationship Zorie has with her stepmother.
Rent a Boyfriend by Gloria Chao: Faced with pressure to marry a family friend, nineteen year old Chloe hires a boyfriend for Thanksgiving. This example of fake dating requires more deception than some. It’s kind of stressful! But the story’s also a thoughtful, and ultimately positive, exploration of Chloe’s experience being the child of Chinese immigrants. Communication is complicated by her parents’ cultural expectations and because of how Chloe’s values and perspective differs from theirs. But bringing someone home -- who gets a front-row seat to the family’s dynamic -- turns out to be helpful. So, not quite the fake dating story I expected, but really interesting nevertheless.
The Swan Riders by Erin Bow: This sequel to The Scorpion Rules is stressful and sharp (I expected as much, which is probably why I waited over a year before reading it). In the beginning, the situation is deteriorating and seems impossibly bleak. Yet the story works its way towards solutions which are unexpected, believable and hopeful. This is a thoughtful exploration of artificial intelligence and of being human. I was glad I read it, but, like the first book, I don’t really feel compelled to spend a lot of words reviewing it.
Hamster Princess: Little Red Rodent Hood by Urusla Vernon (aka T. Kingfisher): This concludes Harriet’s story on a satisfying note but the preceding adventure didn’t appeal to me as much as the other books did. I suspect it just wasn’t written for me -- not the person I am now, nor the little girl I used to be. (The dedication reads: For all the little girls who grew up wanting to be werewolves.)
Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri: A noblewoman’s right to choose her own husband is considered sacred, but when Mehr is introduced to an unexpected suitor, she knows there will be consequences for her family if she refuses. I was immediately hooked. This is a story about power and magic and empire, yet its focus is personal, rather than epic -- Mehr, her identity and her relationships. I love how Mehr and Amun's relationship is built on choosing to be kind to each other in a situation in which they have few choices. I also liked how the story explores the choices people make to protect loved ones.
The Foyles Bookshop Girls by Elaine Roberts (narrated by Louise Amos): In the summer of 1914, Alice and her two closest friends are working at Foyles Bookshop. As a story of friendship and family during WWI, this sounds exactly my sort of thing, yet if an audiobook I was waiting for had become available sooner, I would have easily abandoned this. I wanted more details about working at Foyles, and more details about the job Alice gets driving ambulances, and stronger dialogue. These characters were all just a bit too good at saying what they really thought and felt. Most people aren’t that direct, articulate and self-aware all the time.
Virgin River by Robyn Carr: I was interested to note the points of similarity and of difference with the Netflix adaptation, and interested in Mel’s experiences as a nurse/midwife in a rural community. I also liked that there’s a sense of time passing and that the main characters are comfortable letting the romance unfold slowly. But it’s written in a style which doesn’t quite appeal to me. I found something unsatisfying about times when Carr doesn’t show what Mel is feeling. By the end, some of the characters’ attitudes were beginning to irritate me, too.

Interrobang Planning
Skills/processes I have developed so far:
Photography
Painting
Printmaking
Film
Stitch work
Poetry / creative writing
Sculpture
Installation
Mixed media
Skills/processes I would like to develop further:
Sculpture – experimenting with materials to reflect context and concept;
Mixed media – combining sculpture, painting, photography within one form;
Performance – realising emotive contexts through physical performance – presence and absence: the body and what is cast off from the body
These four questions are designed to focus on three distinct areas and creative aspiration:
Question 1 relates specifically to medium; you should consider this as process-based research:
Materials: wax, latex, cloth / clothing, photographs, paintings, embedding objects (e.g. mirror fragments, clay imprints) within materials. Painting onto wax forms, stitching into materials, creating complex sculptural forms comprising of many different elements and materials.
Clay and magnets: experiment with incorporating iron filings and graphite filings into the clay and sculpting forms from them. Hang them alongside each other and strong magnets to create a push/pull effect between the sculptures. Could also try embedding the magnets in clay sculptural forms.
Materials and magnets – experiment with the filings in drying latex and use magnets to manipulate the shape?
Question 2 relates specifically to concept; this should question what your ideas are about.
My ideas for this project stemmed from thoughts surrounding the functions of sculptural practices with material outcomes as an extension of the self. This initially became apparent to me from spending time critically considering Eva Hesse’s practice and the hidden meanings embedded within it.
The process for the work I plan to create will involve capturing the ephemeral in real time through sculptural practices. It will also involve using materials to physically conceal and build up a complex narrative through mixed media. I will also explore the kinetic in order to produce a material depiction of the immaterial experience of connection, separation and longing.
Question 3 relates specifically to context; this should be read broadly and consider what context means to you. This could include place, time period (historical), space, artists, etc.
I will explore and consider the following contextual topics: Longing, remembering, forgetting, presence, absence, connection, separation, the act of shying away and burying emotions/feelings.

Question 4 relates specifically to creative aspirations, what you intend to do next with the rest of the module.
I plan to use this initial period of intense experimentation to explore various avenues of thought and material delivery. This will then lead me to consider how these ideas can be refined and interwoven with my existing practice output. It will become more apparent as my experiments unfold. I am hopeful that the material experiments that I complete throughout this short project will provide me with a solid idea about how I can refine and focus on for the remainder of the module.

My February & March Reads
99 Percent Mine, Sally Thorne - I took a vacation day to read this, romance genius Sally Thorne's second book, and it was one of my best ever decisions. Sally made the name Tom hot, can you believe it? Five enthusiastic stars.
Love Walked In, Marisa de los Santos - Beautiful writing, quirky characters, lots of snow and Christmas and food and references to everyone's favorite literary orphans. This book made me :)
The Flatshare, Beth O’Leary - Oh hello, I've already read this book twice! I love the premise (a nightshift guy and a dayshift woman share an apartment but haven't met; they get to know each other via post-it notes) and it's such a fast read. You’ll root for both of the main characters, there's a delightful friend group, interesting jobs (I love stories that incorporate work; we all spend so much time working, how can you not talk about it), and everyone muddles through their personal and professional problems with a lot of humor. Many thanks to Kerry for insisting I’d love this book so many times I went begging to NetGalley.
Nuts, Alice Clayton - So my pal Jenn gave me a stack of romance novels and I read each one’s summary to my sister and let her choose my first read. This book won annnnd guess what? I loved it. The story is ridiculous and hilarious, the writing is great, and I can't resist a book based around food descriptions. Clayton really captured the small-town charms of Hudson Valley, not to mention how gross NYC is on bulk trash day. Fingers crossed the next book in this series is about Roxie's best friend and the grouchy, hot dairy guy.
The Unlikely Romance of Kate Bjorkman, Louise Plummer - This ‘90s teen book is one I read in middle school and have been thinking about ever since; I finally found the title after years of searching and ordered it from Community Bookstore. It was a whole journey and you can read about it on my Instagram if you’d like. I reread it and nostalgia is a beautiful thing, folks. This is a holiday romance, a brother’s best friend romance, an ugly duckling romance, it’s everything. Can we have a Louise Plummer renaissance? Everyone request her YA books from your library and bookstore. Also, the Goodreads algorithm showed me other intriguing teen books from the ‘80s and ‘90s, and I’m now reading one by Norma Klein. I’ll report back!
We Are Okay, Nina LaCour - Sometimes I look up what book events are happening to remind myself why I live here, and that’s how I ended up at Books Are Magic on a Friday night in February to see Nina LaCour. ANYWAY, I knew I’d love this book as soon as Nina said she just likes writing about sad girls who collect pottery and drink tea. If I ever write books, this kind of book is one of my goals. It’s quiet YA to the max and it’s just so lovely.
The New Me, Halle Butler - Amazing writing, hilarious observations about that 9-5 office life, and a little less depressing than her first book. These are all compliments—read Halle Butler!
Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, Rey Terciero & Bre Indigo - Ahhhh, it’s a modernized, graphic novelization of Little Women and it’s so freaking cute. I loved all the ways they updated the story without losing the essence of the original. I won’t write any spoilers but I will say that this version won’t leave you sad or disappointed.
Red, White & Royal Blue, Casey McQuiston - I cannot believe this is a first novel, holy crap. It is SO funny and page-turny and the romance is so hot, my goodness. Plus all the side characters are amazing, I would like to read books about all of them (especially Nora).
Friday Black, Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah - You have to take your time with this collection, or at least I did. It's so impressive and stressful! Adjei-Brenyah's writing is like George Saunders' but with a stronger point of view, and his stories are like Black Mirror episodes but with smarter social commentary. If you haven't read this yet, add it to your list.
