I'm putting off an odyssey reread because I don't want an epic burnout (pun intended) but I really want to reexamine the symbolic meaning of circe turning the crew into pigs of all animals because I don't think it has the pure 1:1 gluttony or 'sexist pig' meaning that modern readers instantly read into it. afaik the DOG was much more a symbol of gluttony because they received scraps of human food at the table but also roamed the streets for trash (devoured the waste remains of sacrifices) and ate corpses, even attacked their own masters because they couldn't control their animal impulses (this is why women were considered doglike in greek epic; they can control neither their gluttony, greed, or lust). getting turned into pigs is not about the threat they pose to circe or their entitlement, it's about her (liminal) divinity. she's asserting HER superiority. humans are like animals to her. they are livestock, and powerless against her lures and might.
but pigs were sacrificial animals, demeter's animals, symbols of (agricultural?) fertility and had SEXUAL connotations. what if the crew was turned into what circe, an immortal and powerful goddess, sees them as: slabs of meat, a tasty morsel, something meant for consumption? the spectre of cannibalism looms large over the entire odyssey, but in the circe episode power and sex interact very closely once odyssey overpowers her. her initial overpowering of the crew is imo an eroticised charged act, but is the choice of pigs (rather than pigs and cows, as in the other episodes) part of that gendered and erotic theme?

John Oliver gets it, as usual. AI Slop is one of the best episodes of Last Week Tonight I've seen so far. Gen AI is theft. Those who use it are not authors or artists, they're grifters profiting from real creatives.

learning that addiction is a progressive narrowing of the range of things that make one happy was kinda life changing for me. i apply it to everything not even just addiction i am always checking to ask if i am narrowing my range of happiness or widening it

most of the time everything sucks but when the sky is blanketed in dark blue-grey clouds after heavy raining and the sun starts to peek through the clouds so that the tops of trees glint pale green and every white structure is starkly, blindingly silhouetted against the sky i鈥檓 ok.
