And so the Strike begins
âI think weâll win this fight all right. I ainât made 20 cents this week, but I can stand a heap of that and so can all the Brooklyn boys. Donât you touch Worlds or Journals until they give us a decent deal. Weâre putting them out of business fast and they know it.â -Race Track Higgins at the Strikers Rally, July 24 1899
Today 125 years ago the Newsboy Strike in New York began.
Prominent leaders include
Race Track Higgins leader of the Brooklyn boys, who spoke commonly in horse and race metaphors,
Louis âKid Blinkâ Balletti, an 18 year old Italian American who was later accused of scabbing (he wrote a Newboy poem because of this),
David Simmons, a 21 year old whoâd been selling papers since age 8 who stepped down as union president after being accused of betraying the strike,
Morris Cohen, little is known but he stepped up after Kid Blink and David Simmons were accused of scabbing,
Henry Butler, leader of the upper manhattan Newsies after Kid Blink, was arrested for blackmail for telling executives at New York World he wouldnât stop the strike for anything less than $600
Annie Kelly, one of the few Newgirls loyal to the strike, she spoke at the rally after being pulled on stage by other newsboys.

I headcanon that Jack is Kid blinkâs little brother because Jack was based on him yet Kid blink was included in the 92sies but not the main character. Thatâs the post.

snippet below the cut xoxo
Louisâs eyes flutter open, squinting against the dingy light in his popâs kitchen. Heâs making supperâ enough for him and his popâ on the stove. A pot of beans scraped together with the manâs measly paycheck.Â
He goes to stir, but misses the pot again, hazy shapes from his left eye throwing his overall depth perception off just enough. He tips the spoon into the pot, shoulders tensing as the door swings open.Â
âHeya, pop,â he calls without turning around, stirring the beans again. âMakinâ supper.â

Do we have a definitive confirmation Kid Blink and David Simons definitely scabbed? I've read that they were accused of it but later found innocent by most of the other newsies, although they stepped down from their positions to ease tensions. Also given how unreliable newspapers could be at the time, I can't help but suspect some of the stories were either directly from or at least supported by the publishers trying to weaken the strike. Any grounds for this theory?
That is a very interesting question, and one I have wondered about many times myself! Unfortunately thereâs no way to know for certain, but circumstances are suspicious. Letâs start with evidence and then discuss what might have happened.
Several newspapers reported on Kid Blink and David Simons selling the boycotted papers, which makes the idea that the Times or Sun or whatever other paper just made the story up unlikely. However, the details of events are different from paper to paper. Some say the two had accepted a bribe to break the strike. Some say it was a power move to be seen as a strong leader who ended the strike. Some say they thought the strike was over. And then what happened after their alleged betrayal also differs. Some sources say their papers were torn up by the other strikers. Some say they were searched and found to have no bribe money on them. Some say they were called to trial with the other strike leaders, including one in which they defend themselves in almost Shakespearean prose followed by a full multi-verse poem supposedly spontaneously composed by Kid Blink. I am inclined to believe that the latter at least was written by somebody who was not actually in the room, but whose poem I dearly wish had been turned into a song for the musical if only for the beautiful repeated line of âStrike! Strike! Strike! Strike! Strike âem on the head.â
The complication in believing anything these papers report is that the very people reporting on events are the people whose business is most directly affected by the strike. The World and Journal desperately wanted to make the strikers look bad to end the strike as quickly as possible, and they used their influence to try to stop the other papers encouraging it too. The other papers, by contrast, wanted the strike to continue as long as possible. With their competition boycotted they stood to make a lot of money as long as the strike was on.
So possible explanations:
Kid Blink and David Simons scabbed. They saw people were upset and came back to the cause. The papers reported exactly the truth.
Kid Blink and David Simons scabbed and were not forgiven. The rival papers tried to lighten the damage they knew this would do to strikersâ morale by pretending there was a trial and the two were found innocent.
The Times/Sun/Tribune made up the story for a good headline. I think this is unlikely as it would be against their interests, but itâs possible.
Unfounded rumours spread as they tend to among children, and by the time the rumours were proven false the damage had already been done.
Kid Blink and David Simons were victims of a whisper campaign by the World and Journal who deliberately planted misinformation among the kids to sabotage their cause.
Personally I think possibilities 4 and 5 are most likely but itâs impossible to know for sure. July 25 was the high point in the strike. Just the night before five thousand boys had rallied at Irving Hall. Public opinion was on their side. The World and Journal were scared. Of all the days to scab, the 26th would not be the day I would choose! However, if I were a newspaper executive, July 26 is exactly the day I would resort to starting rumours about childrenâŚ

So I was going through WIPs and found that I had written almost 3k for a highschool AU. I'll just share most of this here I suppose because it is so funny and cute ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thinking about his boyfriend, Mush grinned widely into his locker, getting all the books he would need in the day out. Just a few more minutes and heâd get to see him. The last time had been on Friday before Blink got to his orchestra rehearsal and he himself had to get to soccer practise. They hadnât had time to meet during the weekend with all of their homework and families, but they had been together for long enough that it didnât matter.
Of course he loved being with Louis, but it wasnât a need to see him everyday to make sure they still loved each other anymore. He knew that was the case.
Still, Mush hadnât expected to see Blink grinning like a madman with a red-faced Race trying to get in his way as much as he could, elbowing him, pulling him by the arm, but not accomplishing much to deter him. âNick, Nicky you wonât believe- Ouch! Whyâd you got so sharp elbows, man? Mush, come here, Iâll have to tell you before I get stabbed to death, quick!â
Not one to refuse his sweetheart anything â and also intrigued what could possibly get Race to resort to almost killing Louis â he got closer, Race only doubling his efforts to shut Blink up without much success. âDonât you dare, Louis Ryan Balletti, Iâll leak those photos of you I swear to god-â
âDo it, I dare you, I donât care, this is better. Nick, Nick, guess what happened on Friday-â
If this was something from last Friday, it must have happened in their orchestra rehearsals. If Mush wasnât wrong there was something special happening in these ones, he just didnât quite remember what. âRacetrack, come on, let my boyfriend live, heâll tell me sooner or later.â
âNot if heâs dead he wonât.â
âRace. No murder in public places, even your family canât get you out of that.â
Race rolled his eyes at the implications. Raceâs Italian family being part of the mafia had been a running joke for years, since they first found out about his heritage. But at least he stopped, leaving Blink to grasp his shoulders and grin like heâd just won the lottery. âRace, our dear little Tony, has a crush on one of the theatre kids.â
âItâs not a crush-â
âAnd how it happened is the best thing Iâve ever seen, I swear, Nick-â
âItâs not that important, Blink, youâre makinâ it out to be way bigger than it was.â
While the two kept bickering, Mush remembered what had been so special about Fridayâs rehearsals. This year, the theatre club did a musical and instead of using pre-recorded music they wanted to include the school orchestra for the tracks. It was very ambitious, in his opinion, but if someone could do it, it would be Ms. Medda. She was an angel of a woman and responsible for both clubs, even though she shared the orchestra with someone else, who was also the conductor.
âStop for a sec.â, started Mush, âIt was the first meeting with the theatre kids, right? Because of the musical?â
Race, looking resigned, and Blink, looking manic, turned to him again. âYeah! And for the first fifteen minutes Medda and Hannah were discussing some stuff so we were left alone and could just talk, you know? And apparently one of the Delanceys is in theatre.â
"Anyways, if this is happening, I may as well explain it. So Oscar was being really annoying, arguing with one of our girls, Stray, sheâs playing the flute, and I donât even know if he was trying to flirt or just plain arguing but it was getting loud and she was yelling at him to leave him alone.â
âAnd then comes Raceâs knight in shining armour-â
âThen comes a guy from theatre I donât know and pulls Oscar away and as heâs not backing down, so he punches him square in the face.â
âRace was practically swooning.â
âNo I wasnât, shut up.â, denied Race, already getting red in the face again.
~~~~~~ I skipped a bit of scene setting from that Friday pov ~~~~~~
With how Race had to look back to talk to Blink he didnât notice Oscar Delancey, Mr. Wieselâs nephew, come up to their front row and talk to one of their flute players, Stray. Even if heâd seen it, he probably wouldnât have thought much of it, he and the rest of their friend group didnât like the Delanceys much, with Jack fighting them regularly, but he wouldnât have let that influence his orchestra experience. Heâd at most have wondered why Oscar was in the theatre club. If he wanted to talk to someone that wasnât their business.
Well, just talking wouldnât have been their business anyhow.
Everything happened pretty fast after that. Race heard it get loud, registered Oscar and Stray arguing about God knows what and heâd had half a mind to get to the front and intercept the argument, as it didnât have a place in todayâs rehearsals, as another theatre kid got up to them, pulling Oscar back and sternly talking to him, much quieter. He had thought that was that and already wanted to turn back to Blink to ask him whatever had just been going on, as the expression on the unknown blond boy turned furious and he punched Oscar square in the face.
Race would later never admit it, not under torture or anything, but the moment he reeled back for his punch, as he was halfway turned in Raceâs direction, it almost seemed like time slowed down.
He hadnât seen much of the blond boy before, but the only thing that came to mind as he fully saw his profile was the word pretty. He had a kind of petite features, making him seem like one of the fairies in stories that would lure you into eternal damnation or something with a wrong word, with bright eyes whose colours Antonio couldnât quite see from this far away that burned with an anger that made it more seem like he was some spirit of vengeance that had descended on earth for revenge and-
As the punch collected Race slightly shook his head. What had just gotten into him? He already knew he was very much attracted to men but that had never happened before. Even as Oscar tried to hit back, and as Medda got in between the boys, he could only think that whoever that was looked really pretty. And could probably kill him if he ever found out what kind of weird ass thoughts heâd just had about him.
Being absorbed in different renditions of âdamn, heâs prettyâ, Race didnât notice that Blink had seen each and every reaction his friend had shown upon witnessing the scene and was already planning out his interrogation. For whenever Race returned to the real world.
Mush laughed at the explanation, obviously siding with Blink. The traitor. âLove at first punching a Delancey, thatâs a first.â
Absolutely done with the assholes he called friends, Race intended to turn around and sulk or search for any of his other friends who hadnât been present at Friday, but as he saw something â or someone down the hall he quickly turned around to blend in with the other chattering students in the hall.
Naturally, his asshole friends noticed. âWhatâd you see? Snyder? Or-â Race could see the exact moment Blink recognized Raceâs predicament as his face split into another gleeful grin. âOh, who have we here?â
Mush, who hasnât been subtle a day in his life got onto his tiptoes and leaned on Louisâ shoulder to balance himself while he looked around. âIs it that blond over there? Wait, I know him.â
âYou do?â, slipped out of Race before he could stop himself. Goddammit, he was already a pathetic mess, and he didnât even know anything about the guy.
While Blinkâs smile turned into a grin Mush either hid his maliciousness better or wanted to be genuinely helpful. âWe played against each other in soccer in Middle School, he played for a Brooklyn school. Everyone called him Spot, I think his last name was Conlon.â
Spot Conlon. That would make it a lot easier to find his accounts on any socials, just to see what he- no, no, donât be a stalker, you donât even know him, the crush will pass, donât be weird.
Naturally, the universe hated him â or loved him, depending on when you ask him about this occurrenceâ so when Race got lightly tapped on the shoulder he had expected Jack, or Crutchie, or David asking him to compare their physics homework, not the object of his affections who shouldnât even know he existed.
Standing opposite of Spot-the-blond-theatre-club-member he noticed that he was only minimally shorter than the other, which didnât happen often, usually he had at least half a head less in height than everyone else, which didnât help the fluttery feeling in his stomach. Spotâs eyes were also grey or a very light blue, which made it seem like he was unravelling every thought Race had just had about him. It didnât make him any less pretty.
âUm, hi?â, he stuttered, not quite sure what could have prompted the other to talk to him. What if heâs a psychic and just heard all the things he thought about him-
âHi, youâre Tony Higgins, right? Play the first trumpet in band?â And Mush must have been right with him being from Brooklyn because you could definitely hear that. Racetrack tried to concentrate fully on not turning red because he was forced to talk to a crush he hadnât even really processed yet and god he was such a bi disaster, this wasnât even funny.
âYeah, thatâs me.â, he said lamely. He heard quiet snickers from behind him, undoubtedly from Mush and Blink. Heâd kind of forgotten they were still behind him.
âIâm Sean Conlon, I play Dracula in the production, I wanted to ask you somethinâ about a song Iâm pretty sure you got a solo in, but,â he looked down at his phone for a second, âItâs gettinâ pretty close to first lesson, you got time after school to meet up?â Whichever higher power was at fault for this happening got both a thank you and a curse, because this wasnât in his plans, he wants to meet me, shit what do I do?
âYeah, sure. I donât have anything going on.â It would mean he wouldnât be able to drive Blink and Mush home, but he was sure Jack or David had some free seats, this was more important, and they only deserved it for how they laughed about him. Whoâs laughing now? Well, not Race, but not them either.
Race wasnât prepared for the small grin Sean â Spot, whatever â sent his was shortly before turning around. âCool, see you then.â
Managing for another ten seconds to look like he was totally normal, he promptly fell into himself as he turned back around to Nick and Louis who were cooing in his direction. âWhat the fuck was that. You saw that too, right? I didnât just hallucinate talking to him?â
Mush, with a far too sappy expression cooed: âYouâve already fallen so hard, itâs adorable.â
âAnd yeah, he was here, must be your lucky day, Racey. Should I already plan the wedding?â
Grumbling, he rolled his eyes. âThatâd imply heâs interested.â
â  how could you do that? i thought we were friends! â
â  you betrayed us and still you think you can think you can just waltz back in here like nothing ever happened? â
â  fuck you! this is all your fault! â
quotes from ;; @poohsources !!
word count ;; 1,147
Antonio "Racetrack" Higgins, Jack Kelly, Louis "Kid Blink" Balletti
âIâll soak ya! Ya bum!â A voice shouted, being held back by multiple other boys. Antonio was beyond pissed. Jack betrayed them! His own friend! The leader of the Manhattan newsies! Betrayed them! He had all the right to be pissed off! For once, the boy hadnât had a cigar held between his teeth, but damn right was he pissed off beyond recognition. Jack was a scab! Just look at him! With that stupid blazer, that stupid hat. Well- Race couldnât call it stupid. He had the same hat on his own head.
His dark eyes were narrowed, continuing to spill out threats to Jack at the given time. Though Spot, or Sean, had stopped him eventually, spewling out his own threats, âLet me get my hands dirty.â Heâd speak to Race, pushing the male slightly back. âCâMERE YOU DIRTY ROTTEN' SCABBER-!â Heâd shout, trying his best to point his cane at the man he used to trust. This was just so fun. Wasnât it?
It was aggressive. Spot was an aggressive kid, everyone knew this about him. He was a loud kid, a mean kid. It didnât matter what, Spot was angry. But right now, he was definitely aggressive. Spot continued to try and get to Jack, being pulled back by countless of the other Newsies surrounding. âIâLL MURDER YA!â He shouted, being pulled towards the back. Eventually, Jack was.. Well, off selling his papers. Heâd only stopped and gave up his scab facade when hearing the yells of a woman. Sarah Jacobs, Davidâs sister.Â
To say when Race, Spot and Blink had seen Jack again, it took a large portion of the boys to hold the three boys back so they didn't exactly murder Jack. Racer was the first to shout, violence held in the way he shouted. "How could you do that!? I thought we were friends!" He'd shout, narrowing his eyes at Jack. He was beyond pissed with Jack. Who wouldn't be? The three continued to be held back, either by someone's arms around their chest, being held back by the arms, or shoulder. For example with Racer. He had to be held back by the arms, people knowing he'd be swinging if he got free.
Spot had to be held by the chest, his cane he always carried around tightly held in hands. He had an annoyed expression on his face, his pale eyes narrowed at Jack as he stared at the boy. "You betrayed us and think you can just waltz in here like nothing ever happened!?" He shouted eventually, venom in his tone as he tried to get out of whoever was holding him, which resulted in one of his own Newsies, Sniper, being elbowed in the stomach. He didn't apologize, hell no. Spot hardly ever apologized to anyone.
Next on the list was Kid Blink. He was being held back by Mush, who had been holding him by the arms. Even with a singular bad eye, Blink had his target straight in his vision. The dirty blonde had his eye narrowed straight at Jack, annoyance laced in his tone as he soon enough spoke. "Fuck you, Jack! This is all your fault!" By all of it being Cowboy's fault, he meant all the newsies being either hurt or caught. That was his fault. And it was clear that Louis didn't trust him just yet.
Who would? Jack was JUST dressed like a scabber only a day ago! Blink had his expression remaining beyond pissed, Mush having not let go at all. He'd rather Jack not get murdered by one of the guys who can easily do that. Even if David had told them Jack was helping them again, it would take the three boys a while to really trust Jack again. Did he think he could just walk in here and think everything was going to be fine? It wasnât. These three boys, mainly Race and Kid, trusted Jack with their hearts. But now look! Jack was coming back, even after being revealed to be working for Pulitzer! They all had the right to be pissed off. Hell, Mush understood the reason why Kid was prepared to kill âem. Him and Race had all the right. So did Spot.
Hell, the kid came all the way down here just to be left and betrayed by Jack! The king of Brooklyn had all the right to be beyond pissed at the leader of the Manhattan Newsies. As soon as he saw Jack dressed as a scabber, all the trust for that bastard had gone away. But now, here they all were. Well, at least here is where two of them were. Kid and Race kneeled down besides a window that appeared to be from a basement. In that said basement was David, Sarah, Jack and Denton. And it just so happened to appear that they were working on printing out a paper. The paper that spoke about the rally, that spoke about the strike. All of this. All of what these boys were standing for. Jack was trying to avoid eye contact with Race at first before hearing the boy speak.Â
âItâs good to have you back, Jack.â He commented, grabbing the papes that the cowboy was giving out and slinging them over his shoulder, like he had with every paper he sold during the early hours of the morning. A soft sigh escaped Jack, his shoulders falling as the breath he had sucked in finally released. He was nervous, especially when it came to his right hand man. Though, when Race and Mush had kneeled down to grab their papers, Blink still had that slight death glare on his face for a couple seconds. Unil Jack saw it form back into a smile. Which⌠surprised Jack, actually. He thought the kid was gonnaâ kill âem at the third sight of him. And he wouldnât have been surprised if so.Â
Taking a shaky breath in himself and grabbing the papers, he avoided eye contact for a moment or so before speaking up himself. âThanks for cominâ back to us, Jack.â He spoke, giving a small nod to Jack, whoâd only reply with a smile and nod. âItâs good to be back, Kid.â But Jack knew after all this was over, heâd be out of here. On that train to Santa Fe. It wasnât until after the strike, with everyone celebrating, that everything happened. Jack was in the back of Teddy Rooseveltâs carriage, on his way to the train tracks. With Race in front of the line at the distribution gates trying to get their papes, it was a matter of time before someone called out with excitement in their voice.Â
âEVERYONE, ITâS JACK!â The voice called out, resulting in cheers. Jack was back, the boys were on goodish terms ,and Spot wasnât gonnaâ murder Cowboy.
Everything was back in order.
below is a list of Newsies real names and ages. due to the nature of the media, most of these are headcanons. however, a lot of the headcanons are as good as canon in the fandom due to their widespread popularity. iâll admit though, quite a few in this list are names and ages assigned by me. all of the newsies in this list are actual background newsies, from either Livesies, 92sies, or Girlsies, barring Bowery and Pegs (my ocs). you may also see things about a newsie named Gravesâ he was an April Fools Day prank created by I believe @newsiepedia ? I think heâs swell I just didnât include him in this list. I only included actual newsies in this list, but if youâve only seen livesies Iâll tell you about Sarah Jacobs. Sarah is Les and Daveyâs sister in the 1992 movie, as well as Jackâs love interest. Historical Kid Blink admitted to police that he sold boycotted papers (aka the World and Journal) during the strike so those of you getting mad about the stage musical making him a scab were getting mad over the truth and that's the tea
Also here's an article from The Sun dated July 28, 1899 (I'm making a whole post about info from the real strike that I'm finding through The Sun articles so I will be posting this picture again)
Was Kid Blinkâs name Louis Ballett, or Louis Balletti? Iâve seen both said, and Iâm curious as to if thereâs a certain answer, or if both are accepted as possibly correct.
A very good question! The answer is a really interesting bit of historiography (or at least itâs interesting to me).
On the evening of July 27, Kid Blink was arrested for disturbing the peace. The Sun reported on the arrest the next day, saying that at the station, Kid Blink âdescribed himself as Louis Ballatt of 179 Park rowâ. The Evening Telegram, reporting on the same arrest, name him as Louis Dallatt of the same address. However, the name Louis Ballatt/Dallatt does not appear on any census records of the time, and neither does 179 Park Row. So whatâs going on?
I cannot take credit for solving this mystery. As far as I can tell, that honour belongs to the blog newsieshistory, who in 2014 made a post suggesting that the newspapers in 1899 made a few mistakes and that Kid Blink was actually Louis Balletti of 1 Roosevelt St.
Full details are available at the post linked above, but in summary, 179 Park Row was on the same corner as 1 Roosevelt St, and census records for that address list a family with the last name Balletti living at 1 Roosevelt who had a son named Louis who was about the right age. Searching the newspaper record for Louis Balletti returns several articles from the next few years connecting that name with the nickname Kid Blink, and the name Kid Blink with the address of 1 Roosevelt. This is further confirmed by death records and arrest records under the name Louis Balletti on days that newspapers report Kid Blink doing the same.
He is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Queens.
