Crimson Sky is already finished. With the Regents united, I could never send an army to Osaka. It would have meant certain death. So I sent a woman to do what an army never could. SHŌGUN | 1.10 A Dream of a Dream

I frickin love Shogun.
I love the cinematography, the filming style, the narrative, the pacing
I love that they let the characters speak their native languages and did not just have them all speak one langauge; adds a lot of authenticity and depth
And I really really love how they're constantly cussing each other out but at the same time there are no consequences of it bc they can't understand each other and are constantly like "????????" whenever the other one is speaking it's hilarious

There are a lot of people who are watching Shōgun who describe it as unlike anything they’ve seen. To me, the beauty of the series can be summed up by these two thoughts.
Despite the fact that Yabushige was a selfish backstabber who only thought of himself and absolutely deserved his ending… I was still sad because he was such a relatable character.
Despite the fact that Toranaga achieved everything he did and avoided as much bloodshed as possible, and brought about the Edo period, one of the longest periods of peace and stability in Japan… at the end I still was like “Is he really the good guy? Or just the winner and the lesser of two evils?”
One of my favourite things in Japanese dramas (and culture overall) is the power in the absence or something. I didn’t need to see the battle of Sekigahara to know its importance. I didn’t need to see over the top tears to feel their grief. I didn’t need to see dramatics to get the point. I mean, the best part of ep 10 was Toronaga asking Blackthorne “Are you done? We have work to do” after Blackthorne nearly kills himself. I laughed so hard at that line.
I think the idea of the power of something’s absence is another thing that many western viewers won’t be used to, which is what is sticking with them.

I don't know if it's because he values Anjin and Mariko more or if he just hates him but for a guy who sacrificed himself for him Toranaga really likes to give Buntaro shit, and I am here for it. Episode 7 he basically told him he would accept his request if he admitted he was a cuck whose wife would rather fuck a caveman. Dude goes for the throat if you try to drag him into your relationship drama.

Since John Blackthorne is canonically a fan of the theatre, I decided to find out what he could realistically quote when describing the London theatrical scene to Mariko or Toranaga.
Regrettably he wouldn't be able to reference either King Lear or Macbeth, since they're dated to around 1605-06, so no Ran/Throne of Blood/Akira Kurosawa nods. Alas.
Also, no Henry V (1599), Julius Caesar (1599) or Hamlet (1600-1602) as he's been away from England for about two years. However, he could feasibly quote from Henry VI Parts I, II and III, Titus Andronicus, Richard III, Richard II and maybe Henry IV Parts I and II, depending on when he left to go to sea, as they're all dated up to 1598. (Plus, as @fairy-anon-godmother noted, and most fittingly for how things currently stand between he and Mariko, Romeo and Juliet!!!)
He'd also be able to quote Christopher Marlowe's Dr. Faustus (1592-93). I bet he'd love that play, purely because the main character punches the pope.

Funny, story, I thought I'd be able to watch one show specifically for the cinematography, soundtrack and writing and because the trailer made it look genuinely interesting. And then suddenly, this guy shows up out of nowhere with this ponytail and his Jedi robes -- I'm not kidding, they used the old movie/series as a reference for Obi Wan's robes -- and his rare smile and his brown eyes shows up suddenly, I've got 98 screenshots, 12 edits, have read 3 fanfictions.
If evil, why hot?

Yep, I'm enjoying Shogun a lot so far.
And I love both Ishido and Toranaga, their rivalry and their two different ways of being sassy.

Sometimes the mark of a great show is the "silly" scenes.
When the scene is so far removed from the dark, gory premise of the plot and seems like a throwaway but works as a showcase that the humdrum of existence still persists even in war.
The clumsy will still fall, the joker will still make an inappropriate joke, the cook will still burn the food...we will still live.
The key is to do it well.
