It's been pretty low on both my life priorities and my art priorities, but at the moment I'm very slowly finishing an album called "Dark Circles." I'm mostly just re-recording and mixing at this point, I'm just not terribly motivated because it's mostly a bunch of depressing (and kind of derivative) stuff I wrote in 2023.

I can't pretend I know when that's gonna come out, but rest assured yes there will be more Raincloud Halo!!!

Programs

I currently use Logic Pro! If you don't want to buy Logic Pro (understandable) I would strongly recommend GarageBand because it's almost the exact same thing. Like seriously it's kind of a scam.

iirc, Low Ceiling and Music I Forgot About were all made in GarageBand, except "Hope" and "Next Year" which were in Audacity.

Instruments:

I use a flute, acoustic guitar, and electric bass. But all of these I'll sometimes just simulate with MIDI depending on the song. Before I had a bass I recorded my basslines on acoustic guitar and pitched it down digitally (you can do this with Logic plugins, or you can export to Audacity, pitch it down, and import it back into Garageband). I also do this to flute recordings to get a french horn type sound.

Equipment:

Most of my stuff is recorded on a Yeti Blue microphone, except early stuff was just my laptop speakers. Lately I use this shitty little gag gift microphone though because I misplaced my USB to USBC adaptor and it works decently enough for my standards. Maybe don't consider that an endorsement though because my standards are pretty low lmao

I really like the instrumentation in all of them fhhfhdhdhfhhdhjdhj

idk everything people use but here are some things i know i use and some other members use (we also mostly use Logic Pro X for reference) Glitch 2 really fun glitch fx plugin, though once you hear it it becomes super easy to tell when something uses it loll. one time payment of ~$50 that is pretty worth it especially to support the dev! i'm unsure if the original Glitch 1 is still available for free, but if it is it works just as well Arcade by Output subscription-based plugin for instruments and sampling. you know those fun samples we use in songs occasionally? often they come from Arcade. if you are new to using DAWs it might be a bit confusing but its fun to mess with Kontakt 7 + Session Plugins by Native Instruments currently a lot of this is 50% off rn on sale but still pretty expensive. kontakt is a really great plugin with high quality instruments to use in it, especially the Session vsts (acoustic, bass, electric guitar, etc). if you have a wad of cash lying around and really want something high quality these are very good LABS by Spitfire Audio completely free plugin with free instruments that are pretty good and high quality, often experimental and sampled from real instruments

i used to use logic pro for a while but that's only because the college im going to demanded i used it for the first year but im free now... my shackles have unbound and now i can use reaper

also i do not recommend hackintoshes for real work lol i cant afford a macbook but it served me quite well for the year so i have no complaints besides it being significantly slower than on macbook hardware and also that stupid annoying audio issue i had with my sound card due to incompatibility so i had to use a usb DAC whenever i wasn't plugged in to any interface

also i do wish that ableton was on linux otherwise i would be using that with max/msp... and im not even going to bother using wine for it although i'll take a look at it someday

for now, reaper is awesome and yabridge is a perfect combination for all of my totally legally purchased dmgaudio and fabfilter plugins

fav reverb and or delay plugins to use for vocals?

i love valhalla vintageverb and really only use that, but sometimes i’ll use the space designer stock plugin on logic if i want to do a reverse effect on the reverb! for delay i literally just use logic pros stock stereo, echo, and tape delays. i’ve never bought or downloaded any other delay plugins because the ones that come with logic just work well enough for me :)

It's free, but reasonably powerful with a good range of plugins and the UI is pretty intuitive. We're a thrash (occasionally veering into death and progressive) metal band so we don't need much in the way of features and bells and whistles.

Two guitars, panned left and right, bass, drums, vocals. We're using some samples at the moment (one starts with Praise The Lord and Pass the Ammunition but it becomes increasingly discordant, possibly my deranged influence), and I'm doing some small overdubs in places - just extra guitars here and there to beef the signal and add something extra.

Our bassist uses Pro Tools and largely handles our mixing needs there.

Music Monday: "Solitude"

In high school and undergrad, I wrote, recorded, and uploaded practically anything I could whip up on Garageband. From piano pieces to podcast soundtracks to covers, I would just share music. That was a joy I didn't realize was so important to my heart until life began to get in the way of that.

But I'm not going to ignore seeking that joy anymore. As I've reminded myself and others, "the opposite of creativity is isolation." That's why I wanted to start my new weekly tradition with sharing my song "Solitude." I wrote this a couple years ago originally for my best friend's short film.

So in these posts, I just wanna chat and ramble about the piece, be open to reactions, and let people offer constructive support.

The film this was originally written for deals with the passing of a mutual friend between the two protagonists and unanswered questions that person left. Naturally, my friend gave me the direction of writing something bittersweet, pensive, and wandering.

To get that "bittersweet" feeling to be a present motif along the journey of this song, I came up with that repeated, cyclical ascending right hand arpeggio. Even though it flows pretty quickly through the piece, it's easy to pick out the four notes: C - E - G - A. This creates a bittersweet impression because it combines a major chord with a minor chord (C-E-A is the minor chord/"bitter" and C-E-G is a major chord/"sweet").

This was recorded on Logic Pro with one of the new piano patches they added, which I was STOKED to see. My biggest complaint was how Logic really only had one decent MIDI piano voice, but one day I just got prompted to update and get over a dozen new piano/keys patches. I'm excited to create tons of pieces with different pianos, as composing for piano is my starting point for almost everything I write.

So this piano patch is called "Lucid Recollection" and I chose it specifically for that cool delay/echo effect. My favorite kinds of plugins are ones with effects I barely have to mess with to sound how I want them to sound. The crackling, icy echoes ring through the higher and/or less dense sections of the song, so I don't have to worry about the reverb and echo of the effects drowning out the melody when we're lower on the piano.

Overall, this new piano and desire to re-record an older piece of mine was an extremely fulfilling activity and I'm happy to share it. The physical act of playing this song puts me into a headspace I certainly wasn't in when I first wrote it. To me, the echoing piano effect exists in contrast to the rest of the song. The building and continuous motion of the melody goes on and on, only to inevitably slow and the echo seems to "catch up" with the rest of the song. Maybe it's something I'm trying to outrun, or maybe it's a memory. Who's to say?

logic pro x is Da Goat for music production far as I'm concerned, but I used to be a huge Sekaiju fan when I did pure MIDI sequencing. I still sometimes use it for sketching

my favorite instrument of all time is the Korg Trinity Plus, I use it all the time in every production and I would never ever wanna be without it <3 second fav is Roland 88Pro cause it's how I got started making something more complex than bleep bloop and its SO easy to use. my fav soft synth tho is probably Omnisphere? really nice bit of software with tons n tons of sounds to use, it's great for when I need to fill a niche and all my hardware is in use
