Lockheed C-141B Starlifter, the original C-141A model Starlifter proved to have more lifting capacity than it had space for cargo thus the natural remedy for this was stretching the cargo bay by 23 feet 4 inches (7.11 m) and allowing the carriage of 103 litters for wounded, 13 standard pallets, 205 troops, 168 paratroopers, or an equivalent increase in other loads. 270 in service A Models were stretched and it is estimated that the increase in cargo capacity for MAC (Military Airlift Command) was the equivalent of purchasing 90 new aircraft. In addition to the lengthening they were also equipped with an in-flight refueling receptacle greatly enhancing the Starlifter's capabilities.
The first of these modified Starlifter's arrived at Travis Air Force Base in California on April 11th, 1980. The Starlifter would serve until what many would say was a premature retirement in May of 2006.

During early Starlifter operations it became apparent that the aircraft should be able to contain more volume while staying within weight and balance requirements. Lockheed began stretching the C-141A, grafting fuselage segments forward and aft of the wing, converting them to C-141B models. You can clearly see one such “fuselage plug” section in my final photo in the set. YC-141B 66-0186 was the first to achieve such treatment. She became an instrumented test vehicle, proving her design in the skies over Edwards Air Force Base, California.
In 1996, she returned home for retirement. The Starlifters were all born at Air Force Plant 6 in Marietta, Georgia, where she sat without wings for many years until “The Aviation Wing” museum acquired the historic prototype. They towed her to a museum airpark on Plant 6 and replaced the wings. Her restoration continues within eyeshot of the Lockheed plant that she rolled out of in 1966.

The USAF had a facination with flying heavies low level for a while. Not sure if they are still doing it as much these days.
