Last few weekends of the Times included interviews w/Bruce Dickinson, The Liverbirds, Bananarama, Cyndi Lauper, Maisie Williams, Michael Sheen and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. Plus an extract from Suzi Ronson's new book about her time working with David Bowie.
There were also features on the rise in fantasy romances (particularly those being written/read by women), politics of girl band styling and Biba (as a new exhibition is opening soon - I've always loved the Biba style + I wish I could have shopped there back in the early 70s).
Also had reviews of The New Look, Alice + Jack, Expats, Masters of the Air, Sexy Beast, One Day, The Jury: Murder Trial, Shogun and The Completely Made-up Adventures of Dick Turpin.

"There are patterns that are fighting with each other, colours that are fighting with each other, floral next to Aztec, next to this rug, next to a bit of ditty-dotty, rural revival bitty-botty. There is the cardinal sin that the British indulge in beyond any other nation, which is this concept of agoraphobic furniture that feels it needs to keep its back to the wall at all times in case something unpleasant happens to it."
This is the best documentary on home decorating I've ever seen lol, the host is amazing. 😂

I had a dream you put on a wig to pretend to be someone else so you could pretend to be a home decor influencer.

Oh, sorry. I forgot to tell you. My alter ego isn't the Headmaster after all. It's Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

The book recap! Previous years: [2023] [2022] [2021]
1. How many books did you read this year?
Currently sitting on 43! This does include a few very short ones, but does not include lit magazines (I started reading Uncanny).
2. Did you reread anything? What?
Dracula, this time listening to Re: Dracula (for the second time), while following along in the official Dracula Daily book!
3. What were your top five books of the year?
Top of the list are Chuck Tingle's Bury Your Gays and Ryka Aoki's Light From Uncommon Stars, which both got a 9.5. Books that got a 9 are Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree, When The Angels Left The Old Country by Sacha Lamb, The Deep by Rivers Solomon, The Unbalancing by RB Lemberg, The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White, and for non-fiction, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen's More More More, Nevo Zisin's The Pronoun Lowdown, and Jungalow: Decorate Wild. So top ten, but like. Eight of those tie.
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
I'd like to read more Sacha Lamb!
5. What genre did you read the most of?
*waves from the SFF corner*
6. Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to?
*laughs in excessively long TBR*
7. What was your average Goodreads Storygraph rating? Does it seem accurate?
4.1, and yeah, seems about right!
8. Did you meet any of your reading goals? Which ones?
Yes! Made a loose goal of 36 (three per month), hit that, went for 40, hit that too! Granted, yes, some were very short XD;; I also got a bingo for the Trans Rights Readathon!
9. Did you get into any new genres?
I did read some poetry for the TRR, although I can't really say I'm a big poetry person at this point.
10. What was your favourite new release of the year?
Bury Your Gays. I liked Camp Damascus a bit more, but this was so fun.
11. What was your favourite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?
Huh, what counts as 'a while'? Light From Uncommon Stars came out in 2021, is three years 'a while'? Otherwise, Dracula is a perennial favourite!
12. Any books that disappointed you?
Read RA Salvatore's Homeland, the first Legend of Drizzt book. It was……… okay. I don't think I'll continue reading the series XD;;
13. What were your least favourite books of the year?
✌️
14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
Oh, hm. That's a week away, so not sure. If I can get a few more in, I would like to try to get to 45! I may try to get caught up on Uncanny?
15. Did you read any books that were nominated for or won awards this year (Booker, Women's Prize, National Book Award, Pulitzer, Hugo, etc.)? What did you think of them?
Light from Uncommon Stars was nominated for the Hugo for best novel in 2022, The Deep for best novella in 2020 (also nominated for the World Fantasy Awards and Nebula novella). Read a bunch of the short story nominees for the Hugos and Locus, including the 2023 winner of both, Rabbit Test, and the 2024 Locus winner, How To Raise A Kraken In Your Bathtub.
16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
Oh, hm. Nothing comes to mind for being over-hyped, aside from maybe Homeland? But then, Homeland's always had extremely mixed reviews ranging from 'this is an absolute modern classic of fantasy' to '…it's bad, Jim'.
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
Not really, they generally hit my expectations.
18. How many books did you buy?
About 25 ebooks, 10-15 physical books.
19. Did you use your library?
Yup! Use your local libraries!
20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?
tbh my most anticipated release was hearing something about Alecto the Ninth and hearing absolutely fuck all 😭 In terms of ones I was expecting that did come out, I goddamn loved Bury Your Gays.
21. Did you participate in or watch any booklr, booktube, or book twitter drama?
I am drama-free~
22. What's the longest book you read?
Her Majesty's Royal Coven by Juno Dawson, at 452 pages. It's just a smidge longer than Dracula, at 440.
23. What's the fastest time it took you to read a book?
I mean. Some were short stories XD
24. Did you DNF anything? Why?
Nope!
25. What reading goals do you have for next year?
Continue an average of at least three a month. Perhaps try for four? I was not very consistent with it.

BOOKS OF 2022
Yes, you read correctly. I'm a ninny and forgot to post this last year so I'm posting it now so I can get all caught up. (2023's list is coming soon)
I got books on Inside No. 9 and Blake’s 7 (two of my favourite TV shows) plus a book about Alice in Wonderland (inspired by the V & A exhibition) and one about how Disney was inspired by rococo art (based on the exhibition that I think was held at the Wellcome but I could be wrong).
Also read Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen’s book, More More More which examined the art of maximalist interiors and Runway Bird by Irina Lazareanu which was sort of a style guide to being a rockstar’s girlfriend. I read Growing Up. Sex in the Sixties which looked at sex in society/popular culture at this time and Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall. I read Zoe Howe’s guide to witchcraft, Witchful Thinking plus Lisa Kroger + Melanie R. Anderson’s 2nd book, Toil and Trouble, which looks at notable women in the occult in America. Plus Dress Code by Veronique Hyland
Also managed to bag a copy of the book of Velour (the drag magazine) when I went to see Sasha Velour perform. I read And the Category Is by Ricky Tucker which examines the ballroom drag culture + voguing plus How You Get Famous by Nicole Pasulka which looked at the rise of some of the drag queens from the Brooklyn scene + the impact of Drag Race.
Read The Queer Bible which has various LGBT+ celebrities talking about the different people who inspired them and a couple of books which looked at the rise of lesbian popular culture in the early 2000s – The 2000s Made Me Gay by Grace Perry and Girls Can Kiss Now by Jill Gujowitz.
I don’t tend to read that many novels but I did read some really good ones this year – My Year of Rest and Relaxation, Yinka Where’s Your Husband? How to Kill Your Family and The Albion Initiative (the final part of the Newbury & Hobbes series of steampunk detective novels with an occult twist). And I finally managed to get round to reading Shuggie Bain (which I loved) as well as tracking down copies of The Elementals (Southern Gothic horror novel) and Interfictions (which contains the story about Nancy Spungen called Rats).
I read memoirs by Joan Collins + Esme Young (from Great British Sewing Bee) as well as an excellent biography on Jayne Mansfield called The Girl Couldn’t Help It and an oral history about Antony Bourdain called Bourdain.
I do tend to read a lot of music books. I read memoirs by Kid Congo Powers and Miki Berenyi plus Bodies by Ian Winwood (which looked at how the music industry affects mental health mixed in with his own story) and Exit Stage Left by Nick Duerden (which looked at what happened to a variety of stars after their fame dwindled). Also read Southend on Zine by Graham Burnett which was a history of fanzines in the Southend area which included interviews with a lot of the zine makers + touched on the history of alternative music/culture in the area.
One of my favourite books this year was Millenium Gothic by Dorian Bridges (known as of herbs and altars on YouTube) which deals with her growing up as a goth in the 00s but also deals with her mental health issues including anorexia and self harm. Another couple of favourite authors returned with second memoirs, Emma Forrest with Busy Being Free and Amy Liptrot with The Instant. Also Ione Gamble (who does the Polyester website + zine) wrote a brilliant book of essays called Poor Little Sick Girls which I highly recommend.
