after losing her husband, liv had become numb to just about every emotions. it had been easier to completely shut down than to deal with the loss. though she was young, she hadn't planned on moving on. then again, no one really does when they are widowed suddenly — right?

wrapping the small sweater around her while she stood on the edge of the pier, keeping herself warm, she felt numb once again. the man she had felt that connection with had also left her. as devastating as it was, liv had no choice but to understand. suffice it to say, as she turned to head back in from where she stood — she was shocked to find him standing there. frozen in place and not due to the wind lashing against her from the waves of the ocean, she felt a flutter in her chest. probably my most powerful interpersonal communication hack is to, whenever possible, ask either/or questions rather than yes/no questions

for example, when chatting with coworkers, i’ll often ask if they have any fun weekend plans. but let’s be real - we all feel like friendless losers when someone asks that question and we go “uhhhhh… no.” so instead, i phrase it as “so, do you have anything fun planned over the weekend, or are you just going to enjoy having some time to relax?”

phrased like this, there’s rarely any awkwardness. you’ve presented two options & given both equally positive connotations, so your conversational partner has an automatic “out,” so to speak

but it works for higher stakes conversations too!!!! my mom was saying this weekend how she and her neighbor both like walking around the neighborhood & that she wanted to suggest they take a walk together sometime, but was worried about how to approach the conversation

so i said “how about you just say ‘i’ve noticed we both like taking walks! would you be interested in going for one together, or do you use walks for some precious alone time?’”

now Walking Neighbor has an automatic “get out of jail free card” if she wants to say no!!!! which means my mom doesn’t have to worry about the conversation being uncomfortable, because she’s set it up to go smoothly

either/or questions rather than yes/no questions. it is really like magic

I suppose the snapping wrists isn't ideal if it's a friend who accidentally frightens you, but I imagine it would be handy in certain scenarios. I haven't. I never thought about that, actually. What kind of classes have you taken?

Hi Sadie!!! That's a totally reasonable reaction too honestly, we all react differently when we're scared and there's nothing wrong with that. Have you ever taken any self defence classes or anything like that? I know it helped me feel a little less jumpy... although I do snap wrists apparently now so I don't know if that's necessarily better??

one of the best ways i’ve found to combat that inherent depressive pessimism without veering into toxic positivity territory is simply the phrase “i’m open to the possibility”

this particularly works with anything negative i’ve forecasted. “i woke up feeling like shit today, so my day is gonna suck” isn’t a particularly helpful thought, but “it’s a great day to be alive!!!!!” feels hollow and insincere when i have a pounding headache & am running on three hours of sleep

instead i’ll tell myself, “i really don’t feel good right now, but i’m open to the possibility that coffee and breakfast might perk me up a bit.” or “i’m in a lot of pain today, but i’m open to the possibility that my workday might still have fun parts despite that”

sometimes, when your impulse is to slam the door on anything good, but you’re not exactly up to going out & hunting it down yourself, leaving the door open just a crack makes all the difference
