The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup “is now recognized as one of the largest direct action conservation programs in Canada. ”
“Litter can have negative impacts on wildlife and ecosystems, including ingestion or entanglement, environmental toxicity due to harmful chemicals in plastics. “
The George Genereux Urban Regional Park clean up is happening Saturday September 19 when the City of Saskatoon will kindly arrange to drop off a large Loraas disposal bin at the site where it will be handy from 9:00am to 5:00pm

George Genereux Urban Regional Park is located in the West Swale, the current name of the Pleistocene era Yorath Island Glacial Spillway. The Yorath Island Glacial Spillway or West Swale was once a river connecting the Glacial North Saskatchewan river valley and Glacial Rice Lake with -at the time- South Saskatchewan Glacial Lake. This span of land is still conducting water through above ground wetlands, and underground water springs and channels between the North Saskatchewan River and the South Saskatchewan River. Keeping this area without pollutants and litter, also keeps the City of Saskatoon water clean and fresh. Cleaning the forest also restores this naturalize site started as a tree nursery in 1972, and it is now an urban regional park, and an amazing nature viewing site.
If anyone has the wherewithal to conduct a cleanup by themselves, that is also wonderful! The Meewasin cleanup has bins around the city and people can go out to George Genereux Urban Regional Park anytime between now and September 31! The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Area and Meewasin can accommodate this wonderful individual endeavour and supply bags to you! How? [email protected] or 306.380.5368
On Saturday, September 19, George Genereux Urban Regional Park is about 1/2 mile square -147.8 acres- in size, so it should be easy to social distance. We will take COVID-19 precautions, to do everything we can during phase 4 of the province’s opening to keep all volunteers safe. We are even rustling up ways to give out volunteers free facemasks on Sat. Sept. 19 in case volunteers come closer than 6 feet! 😉
On Saturday Sept 19 there will be prizes to win! Free facemasks, free refreshments, free plastic gloves & free trash bags for our clean up volunteers. Please let us know your intention to come out so we have enough supplies! [email protected] or 306.380.5368 Thanks!
We look forward to your help and assistance to restore this afforestation area to its naturalized wildlife habitat and enjoy this urban regional park!
Volunteers who helped with the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area cleanup said that it was very rewarding seeing the difference to the semi-wilderness wildlife habitat, and they would do it again!
Please share the George Genereux Urban Regional Park pamphlet with your friends and family! Thanks!

What was Richard St. Barbe Baker’s mission, that he imparted to the Watu Wa Miti, the very first forest scouts or forest guides? To protect the native forest, plant ten native trees each year, and take care of trees everywhere.
“We stand in awe and wonder at the beauty of a single tree. Tall and graceful it stands, yet robust and sinewy with spreading arms decked with foliage that changes through the seasons, hour by hour, moment by moment as shadows pass or sunshine dapples the leaves. How much more deeply are we moved as we begin to appreciate the combined operations of the assembly of trees we call a forest.”~Richard St. Barbe Baker
“St. Barbe’s unique capacity to pass on his enthusiasm to others. . . Many foresters all over the world found their vocations as a result of hearing ‘The Man of the Trees’ speak. I certainly did, but his impact has been much wider than that. Through his global lecture tours, St. Barbe has made millions of people aware of the importance of trees and forests to our planet.” Allan Grainger
“The science of forestry arose from the recognition of a universal need. It embodies the spirit of service to mankind in attempting to provide a means of supplying forever a necessity of life and, in addition, ministering to man’s aesthetic tastes and recreational interests. Besides, the spiritual side of human nature needs the refreshing inspiration which comes from trees and woodlands. If a nation saves its trees, the trees will save the nation. And nations as well as tribes may be brought together in this great movement, based on the ideal of beautifying the world by the cultivation of one of God’s loveliest creatures – the tree.” ~ Richard St. Barbe Baker.

This website is about the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area – an urban regional park of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The hosts are the stewards of the afforestation area. The afforestation area received its name in honour of the great humanitarian, Richard St. Barbe Baker. Richard St. Barbe Baker (9 October 1889 – 9 June 1982) was an English forester, environmental activist and author, who contributed greatly to worldwide reforestation efforts. As a leader, he founded an organization, Men of the Trees, still active today, whose many chapters carry out reforestation internationally. {Wikipedia} Email is StBarbeBaker AT yahoo.com to reach the Stewards of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area View all posts by stbarbebaker

there’s this app called LITTERATI that provides a tracking system for litter and cleanups. it would be cool if these people used that app to help show how polluted our areas are

Day 1421 - One of my 2017 resolutions was to collect 10,000 pieces of litter using the Litterati app over the course of the year. Turns out I made it a little less than halfway to that. But that’s okay! One of my 2018 resolutions is to finish the job.

Hey. Let me tell you about something that has been bothering for a while now. Few months ago while aimlessly scrolling my instagram feed I came across this photograph shared by one of my favourite activist/photographer /artist instagram story – Jack Harries ( I would also recommend checking out his twin brother Fin Harries – truly inspirational guys) This is the photograph that blew me away:
Amazing right? This photo lead me to Natural Geographic page where I found bunch of alarming articles about plastic pollution. Of course like many of you I knew about this problem before but I never really realized juts how fucked up this situation got and the powerful images they shared truly hit me hard. Check out some of this articles to learn more.
There is a bunch of sad environmental videos, photographs or stories I could share with you but that’s not really my goal in this article. What I want to share with you is the ways we all could make a difference and show you some heroes that have been doing their part and don’t get much recognition for all of their hard work.
So here we go:
First of all I want to point you to this website called worldenvironmentday.global and their project BEAT PLASTIC POLLUTION with inspiring slogan if you can’t reuse it, refuse it.
They came up with amazing idea of organized clean up. Basically you can join a clean up event in your location and help get rid of and properly recycle plastic. Here you can learn more about clean ups and also about this app called Litterati which is simply an app tool to help you encourage others to collect plastic.
If you are more of a leader than follower you can organize your own clean up event and register it at this page and share it with people in your location with map of where exactly will the clean up be. Here is how you can register and start and make a difference.
With this organized clean ups I must introduce you someone. His name is Afroz Shah and to be fair I don’t know much about him but I aspire to be like him. This guy does the most amazing clean ups I have ever seen, he does post on his instagram page his clean up results of the week and there has been lot of weeks since he’s been doing this.
This was the picture I saw that led me to Afroz as he was the one of the volunteers. This truly restored my faith in humanity and I feel such satisfaction and relief that there are people who care and do something about plastic problem.
Here are some other photos I screenshoted that supports my theory about unknown hero:
I highly recommend you visit his instagram page HERE and see for yourself the amazing things he did.
If you’re not into big events such as this you can still do your part by following many eco-friendly tips you can find on the internet and here are some:
The whole point is to reduce the amount of plastic you use every day, and if you are for some reason unable to stop using plastic the least you can do is reuse it. I understand that not all of the time you have your canvas bag with you, or your reusable bottle so you buy cheaper plastic version of this, but I’m sure you could find some use for them afterwards.
The sad thing is how cheap is to get this plastic option instead of ecologically friendly ones and trust me being a drop out student in between jobs, working part-time in KFC – money is heavy step back in my eco life as well. I feel so guilty every time I need to purchase a plastic bag and the amount of plastic waste I create on my own is upsetting. The least I can do is recycle it I – have bunch of plastic bags under my table that separates my plastic, paper and glass trash and once in a while I need to find a recycling bin and separate them. You would think that medicine a pharmacy students would have better access to recycling, but nah – if you want to recycle you must make an effort yourself what is such a difference from my primary school where each of our classes had recycling bins so kids could learn to dispose their trash properly.
This leads me to another topic and that’s leading and teachings kinds to reduce plastic waste. I would recommend you check out this stunning video called Oceans of future by Greenpeace. It’s important we grow sence of responsibility and ecological thinking in this kids. I’m so grateful my parents did that with me.
Since I was little we would always separate plastic or milk cartoons from other trash and recycle them later and my parents do that till this day. They actually fill the truck of our car with plastic and need to drive to recycling bins, because there are none in around our new place.
We would always need to turn off the lights when we would leave the room (sometimes not even when we leave the room – it’s so annoying when your dad turn of the lights off when you’re in the bathroom almost every time), turning the water off when you’re brushing your teeth, washing dishes or shampooing your hair. This might sounds ridiculous to you cuz I believe this things comes naturally to people and I find it useless to even mention such small things but I remember skyping with my grandma when she was living and working in america. She would always ask me if I tun off the water when I’m brushing my teeth and I always found it so weird she would ask me something like that. Of course I do. But the family she was staying at don’t find it as natural as I did and it was upsetting my grandma a lot.
We would always make fun of our family’s plastic bag full of plastic bags we would take whenever we went shopping, but once I moved out and lived on my own I realized how clever this idea is and now I have my own plastic bag of plastic bags.
I feel it’s important to put this sence of responsibility into kids and you can always do it in some fun kid friendly way. My parents would for example give me and my sisters bag and we would have to collect trash around our building – make a competition out of clean ups – who collects the most?
There is just no wrong or too little way to save the world.
How to be more eco-friendly if you work for larger corporations?
I currently work for large fast food chain restaurant KFC and let me tell you the amount of waste our single small store creates is alarming. The amount of food and plastic waste is unbelievable and the sad fact remains that single-handed part-time worker in such corporation can’t do literally anything without risking their jobs.
We do have separated trash bins for plastic, bio and mix waste, but we also have to throw all of the meat out once it reach its expiration period of extremely short 30 min! As a former vegetarian the amount of chicken meat, energy wasted for its preparation and basic situation of world hunger depresses me a lot. So what can I do as an individual ? Girls gotta eat and pay bills.
Sadly I did not figure out answer to this question yet besides to push the big bosses into doing eco-friendly changes for whole restaurant chain. We did switched to paper to-go cups instead of plastic and we also use paper bags what is incredible step forward, but the amount of plastic straws is still bad and hopefully we would also make some changes like our competition did hat really pleases me :
Being a middle european I don’t really understand the demand for straws or ice, but switching to reusable metal straw could make a difference and prevent this from happening:
Of course I understand that if I refuse plastic straw at 27th June 2018 7pm from a cashier at fast food restaurant who has to offer me one I’m not gonna save the world – but if the fast food stops/reduce offering one – this might be actually a huge step forward.
Why do I even write this?
Let me be so full of myself and believe that one day some big animal in some firm would come across this article, or some family member of their would mention Beat plastic pollution project to them and light up a spark of thought process in someone who actually could make bigger impact on environment.
Spread the word, get inspired, some people are really trying to make a change – why not be one of them ?
I’m not saying I’m perfect, I still occasionally buy plastic bag or bottle, I don’t always recycle materials that should be recycled and sometimes I’m just lazy and put plastic into mix trash can. But I also switch to bamboo toothbrush instead of plastic, I ordered bunch of canvas shopping bags (that would get deliver to me in plastic bag – how ridiculous is that? There should be something done by this issue as well, or the recipes – most of us don’t need them and sure as hell don’t have any way to reuse it – you might refuse it but that doesn’t mean it’s not gonna get printed anyway) and the least I can do is trying to be better and spread the word to people who care and even to those who don’t .
Also not every time is our effort met with actual results. I’m talking about fake recycling bins where all of the garbage ends up in same place without any recycling whatsoever. So if you see something like this in your building call out the authorities about it! Some of us are actually trying for crying out loud !
The amount of waste that ends up in oceans is just heart breaking. I grew up in a country without access to ocean and I only got to see sea or ocean at our summer family holidays and the memories have from those trips do not meet the sad reality of how bad ocean pollution got.
Simple hard-working individual can not make a difference unless the individuals with actual powers makes changes to preserve the earth. But I feel like I’m slipping back into depressing side of this issue but I really want to point to positive effort of many people involve in helping solve this plastic pollution problem.
There is a note at our fridge in our dorms shared kitchen that states: “Our problem is that we believe someone else is gonna save the world” after one neighbour of mine got upset about number of plastic people from our hall were throwing away.
If you wat to make a difference but don’t know how to start here you can take pledge at national geographic with simple tips of what to do to reduce your plastic waste.
Take your pledge
Thank you so much for your attention

BalloonLITTER in the park today while I was walking the dog.
The little pieces of balloon plastic were lying next to the water edge where there were lots of BIRDS > They can see the pieces as FOOD for their offspring or for themselves . . .and eventually DIE because of it. The stuff fills their stomaches and they keep the sense of being FULL, because it does NOT digest
Jeff Kirschner wishes to make this world litter free with his new app called Litterati. As if the dump of trash we are piling on our planet wasn't enough, a lot of 'educated, modern' people living in progressive societies don't seem to think of inappropriate waste disposal as a real issue. #Litterati

Litter-tracking app aims to help identify local pollution problems - ABC7 Southwest Florida SOUTHWEST FLORIDA – This Earth Day, there’s a new way to pick up litter around Southwest Florida. Students and faculty at Florida Gulf Coast University are using a new app to encourage people to help and track trash in our communities. “We’ve recently found this app called Litterati,” said Kayla Hughes, an FGCU sophomore and president of the ECO FGCU club. The app uses artificial intelligence to identify and locate local pollution problems. If you’re familiar with the mobile game ‘Pokemon Go,’ Litterati holds a similar concept. “It’s a way to track trash while we are cleaning it up on campus. It also geotags,” Hughes said. Litterati uses geographical identification metadata along with media files it uploads. You simply snap a picture on your phone, the app will tag the litter, then you toss it. “We can use this data over years and study where these problems are leading us and actually take actions and steps to stop them,” Hughes said. It also keeps score for each piece you pick up, so using the app becomes a challenge. “It’s a little bit of a competitive spirit about who can clean up the most litter, so they don’t have to wait for one of our litter events,” Kathleen Crawford, the Environmental Sustainability coordinator at FGCU, said. The app can be used across the globe, beyond FGCU. The university just launched a challenge pushing for people to join in all across Southwest Florida. “We set the challenge to run through July 31st and our goal is that 20,000 pieces of littler will be picked up and tagged,” Hughes said. Hughes has always had a passion for sustainability and helping the environment thrive. Now, she’s helping other students and friends like, Charles Neiswander, get involved in her club and the challenge. “I don’t rank very high, but I try my best and hope to get on the leaderboard soon,” Neiswander said. He’s from Florida and he knows how crucial it is, in this case, to catch ’em all. “I found a lot in our storm water system, which is a major issue,” Neiswander said, referring to trash he found along the way. The earth is all connected, and here, trash doesn’t have to travel far to become a big problem. “Anything that ends up on our ground ends up in our waterways,” Crawford said. The university’s programs and clubs are making the mission to clean up litter much more meaningful. “And that’s all we ask for is that people become more aware and they are more aware of their actions and are less likely to litter themselves,” Hughes said. The Litterati app is shedding light on a problem you might just walk right past. “That’s one of the main problems with litter. You’re not aware of it until you start looking for it. Once you go out there, you realize you are picking up pounds of trash at a time and then on out you will start noticing that,” Hughes said. If you want to participate in the challenge, just use the code SWFL on the app, Litterati. It’s set to work within an 80 mile radius of Fort Myers. Litterati App Aims to Rid the World of Litter
Litterati App Aims to Rid the World of Litter
An app called Litterati hopes to save cities money and rid the world of litter one piece at a time. Litterati founder and CEO Jeff Kirschner says his inspiration for the app started when his two young kids noticed a plastic tub of cat litter lying in a creek as they were walking through the woods. They knew that the plastic tub did not belong in the creek. Kirschner says, “It reminded me of…

🚮 Litterati: The global team cleaning the Earth
Jeff Kirshner, Founder & CEO of Litterati was never an active environmentalist. Nor was he an engineer. He is a writer by trade. However, much of that changed one afternoon as he was hiking through the woods with his kids. His four-year-old daughter noticed a plastic tub of cat litter in a creek. "Daddy, that doesn't go there."That was the eye-opening moment for Jeff. His young daughter noticed and pointed out a very simple fact that all of us are aware of, but don't do nearly enough about.Reflecting on that hike and his daughter's observations, Jeff tells us how he was reminded of a lesson he learned as a kid at summer camp. "On visiting day, each camper would pick up five pieces of litter. 200 kids times 5 pieces of litter per kid, equaled a clean camp. So I thought, why not apply that same crowdsourced model to the world? And leverage technology to do it. That was the inspiration for Litterati.", he explains."What happened next was odd. I photographed a cigarette butt using Instagram. Then I took several more photos of litter and noticed two things happening.Litter became artistic and approachable. At the end of a week I had taken 50 photos (picking up every piece) and realized that I was keeping a record of the positive impact I was having on the planet."
Litterati started as nothing more than a hashtag. Today, they have developed an iOS and Android app, and built a community in 165 countries, who have cataloged, mapped, and collected over 5 million pieces of litter.
They've started implementing machine learning models to identify each object, material, and brand – data which is being used by cities, NGOs, schools, and brands. This Global Litter Database provides information that has been used to inform policy, influence more sustainable packaging, and inspire personal responsibility.Litterati has created some impressive innovations and achievements, but what makes Jeff most proud is what the community has achieved. They are called Stories of Impact. Litterati knows that it doesn't matter if you're a student, a scientist, a global NGO, or a Fortune 500 company. They've seen major impacts and lasting changes made by people all over the Litterati community. In Arnhem, Netherlands, citizens cataloged and collected more than 50,000 pieces in less than 4 weeks. Their data was utilized to map problem areas and identify the most common brands, while inspiring people to join in the larger effort. Just this past month, the Dutch community photographed and picked up 20,000+ knetterbals, a golf-ball sized plastic firework. As a result, the leading retailer Albert Heijn banned their sale, with two other retailers following their lead.In San Francisco, California, the city leveraged the Litterati platform to measure the percentage of cigarette litter, which led to a $4,000,000 annual tax revenue from all cigarette sales. The city uses that money to bolster its cleanup efforts.
In Modesto, California, 5th graders picked up 1247 pieces of litter on their schoolyard. The data identified their school’s most common type of litter - plastic straw wrappers from their own cafeteria. Armed with this information, the students approached the principal and asked why the school was buying individually wrapped straws. So they stopped. In Philadelphia, in 2019, Litterati launched a pilot program initiated by the City’s Mayor’s Office, integrating our technology into 12 public schools. Collaborating directly with Nic Esposito, Philadelphia’s Director of Zero Waste and Litter, we conducted a three month program, engaging 300 students who mapped, cataloged, and collected 13,000 pieces of litter.
As of this writing, the Litterati community's Global Litter Count is 5,641,498 piecesLitterati's goal is to create a tool that is simple, yet sophisticated. One that helps cities engage their citizens to collect data, understand their "Litter Fingerprint", and keep their communities clean. A tool that educates students, inspiring them to be tomorrow's environmental stewards. A platform that helps brands identify where their materials end up, so they can understand how to create more sustainable packaging. "Perhaps most of all, our goal is to connect people around the world, empowering them to come together to create impact.", says Jeff.At Warp Institute, our mission is to "Make the Future Come Sooner". So, of course, we asked Jeff to describe how he believes that Litterati is impacting the future for the betterment of humanity and the planet. Here is what he had to say:"Whether it's climate change, ocean acidification, or plastic pollution, today's environmental problems are colossal and complex. People are overwhelmed. There's a demoralized sense of 'what difference would it make if I picked up that one plastic bottle?' But it does make a difference. Litterati is serving as that unifying force, demonstrating that it doesn't matter if you're in Stockholm, Seoul, or San Francisco. When we all take the same, simple action for the greater good, the impossible becomes the possible. Change happens and that feeling of being overwhelmed transforms into one of inspiration and empowerment."So what can we in the Warp Community do to help? Join in the Litterati effort! Download the Litterati mobile application and pick up your first piece.Individually, you can make a difference. Together we create an impact. Read the full article

Another idea to dedicate to the Earth: pick up litter along your route (you can track it with the Litterati app) and recycle what you can and turn the rest into art projects if you can. You can also take back parts of a environmental reclamation project too (example, caragana is invasive where I am and to create a natural grasslands prairie we dig up a bunch and rather than send it to landfill we made sure it was composted and I took parts to whittle flowers from (easy to make, just strip the bark then to mke the flower just gradually whittle a bit until you've made petals) and use them as decoration. If you want to make an altar cloth, you can stitch on the path of where you've picked garbage up from to properly recycle.
Don’t Want A Deity Altar?
Make an elemental altar for whatever element you feel the most connected to.
Dedicate an altar to the Moon, the stars, the faraway galaxies.
Honor the Earth on an altar filled with river pebbles and moss and dirt from places that are special to you.
Make a self-empowering altar full of things you like and things that make you feel good about yourself.
Dedicate an altar to your spirit guide and intuitively fill it with things that help you feel connected to them.
Make an altar for people who inspire you who may or may not be dead.
Make an outdoor altar to honor the spirits of the land.
Leave offerings at a flower-filled altar for your local fae, house spirits, or ancestors.
If you feel close to angels and other Light Beings, invite their blessings with an altar.
Make a minimalistic altar dedicated to the concept of simplicity or nothingness.
The possibilities are limitless. If deity-worship is uncomfortable for you, create a space where you can ground, meditate, and feel magickal without the aid of a deity. The purpose of an altar is to create a sacred space that makes you feel alive with magickal energy, safe, protected, thoughtful. It’s your own special place. Make it a place you’d like to visit often.

From Plastic Bins to Compost Machines: Innovative Methods Australian Schools Handle Spend
As the situation of pollution and environmental destruction becomes more pressing, more schools in Australia are obtaining better ways to improve their spend reduction. They aren't content with just training students to put their trash in the plastic bins round the school. Each goes more by educating and utilizing innovative applications on the best way to segregate, sell, lower, and recycle. Click here plastic bin
One good example is St. Mary's Catholic School in Manly, Sydney wherever students not just grab kitten but additionally track what they're collecting in the Litterati app.
Here tend to be more methods Australian schools are levelling up their spend management.
1. Deciding on the best spend bins
It is now more common to locate colour-coded recycling bins for college in addition to those with different drawings and labels. They are also deciding on containers which are of uniform colour to streamline appropriate spend segregation throughout the campus.
Yet another development is using bins that are manufactured from recycled resources or are 100% recyclable.
2. Integrating spend administration in the curriculum
There are knowledge providers who allow it to be an indicate provide their students a deeper comprehension of the surroundings and man's influence, sustainability, and recycling among different topics. They integrate these lessons into their standard curriculum for science, geography, engineering, arithmetic, economics, artwork, and English.
Apart from academics, some schools also implement applications wherever the complete scholar human body can participate as a whole. For example, they perform a kitten audit and every one helps in examining and segregating spend gathered from college bins.
3. Recycling possess spend
With therefore significantly food spend originating from college cafeterias, some knowledge providers have procured their very own composting machines. The compost they produce is then placed in their very own worm facilities to help break it down, then found in their very own gardens.
Yet another great exemplory case of an innovative achievement is that of Bunbury Cathedral Syntax School in European Australia. They combined up with the Perth start-up Greenbatch in utilizing a closed loop recycling system.
Everybody locally can supply their single-use parts at the school. Greenbatch will likely then method that spend and turn it in to filament for 3D units utilized by the students to make their style and engineering jobs, including prosthetic limbs!
4. Making it enjoyment
More instructional institutions are also becoming more innovative about just how to encourage every one to be more participative in the school's work to sell, lower, and recycle.
For example, they organise contests on who can produce the most effective artwork bit produced from trash gathered from the plastic bins around the college grounds. They might also have a place quiz on recycling or a competition on who can develop the most effective idea on the best way to lower spend and make their college more sustainable.
Expect the Future
From providers of eco-friendly bins for schools to organisations that offer partnerships for sustainability applications, instructional institutions are obtaining more sources and strategies on making spend administration simpler and more enjoyable for students in Australia. Preferably, this can encourage and allow the following technology to achieve what the last decades failed to do.

How Khakis Became Cool Again
Why Chinos Are the New Uniform of Success
When is the last time you wore a tie to work? Probably around the last time you used the word “haberdashery.” There’s a seismic style shift going on in the professional world and ascending through the ranks often doesn’t depend on wearing a suit. Even Wall Street titan Goldman Sachs has loosened up its dress code to make suits and ties optional, offering further proof that desk jockeys are changing their uniforms. Just look around your office — if you still even work in one.
RELATED: AskMen Style Defined: Lay Off the Tie When Reaching for Your Suit
These more democratic environments are a boon for flexibility everyone keeps talking about. But if there is one thing it can be bad for, it’s your style. Modern guys have more options than ever before, but all that freedom can easily lead to confusion. The solution? Create a wardrobe that looks sharp enough to impress but feels relaxed enough to move through your day-to-day with ease.
Entrepreneurs Jeff Kirschner and Ludwick Marishane have this down to a science. The ambitious duo were recently chosen as Dockers Challengers by the chino-championing brand for their innovative approach to making real changes in the world.
Kirschner, who founded a global litter-fighting app called Litterati, and Marishane, who invented the world’s first waterless body wash, DryBath, are always on the move and look great while they’re doing it.
“I love entrepreneurship because I don’t just do one thing,” says Kirschner, an Oakland, California, father of two whose days vary wildly. “I focus on product, the market, community. I get to dabble in a lot of different areas so I get to exercise my brain in new ways.”
Both Kirschner and Marishane appreciate the importance of how their clothes function. “The clothes you wear affect your mood and your mindset — and your approach to work,” says the South Africa-based Marishane, who regularly interacts with schools, governments, and NGOs to implement his groundbreaking invention.
They may live a world apart, but both of these inspiring men start with a foundation of chinos for their foolproof, comfortable looks that are always appropriate no matter where the day takes them. See how these pants can work for you, too.

The Daily Grind
Traditionally, work and life were more compartmentalized. In the old days, you were apt to change out of your work clothes and into an after-hours look. But the modern reality is a work-life integration that is much more fluid. Whether you go to a traditional office, rent a space, or work from home, those worlds can shift quickly and you’ll need to roll with the rhythm.
One solution is to create a versatile default uniform for your run-of-the-mill days when you’ve got bigger things to think about than your outfit. “My goal is not to make a lot of decisions — and what I wear is part of that,” says Marishane. “I prefer to wear a uniform throughout the week.”
Jeans can quite often look a little too casual. Both entrepreneurs start with a classic beige pair of chinos with a solid T-shirt that hits right at the hip. “I think the traditional color works best because it’s really versatile,” says Kirschner. “You can wear them with any color and it takes the guesswork out of getting dressed.”
Need another layer? A soft chambray shirt goes with everything. Even if you’ve been sitting at the coffee shop with your laptop, hunched over in a cubicle, or running around town getting supplies, you’ll always look clean and neat. Lastly, a simple, classic sneaker can ground the look without sacrificing that laid-back feeling.

Madewell Chambray Shirt, $80 at Madewell.com

The Office Meeting
You may think you’re impressing, but clients and colleagues can probably see through overdressing. “I like being in a suit,” says Kirschner. “But it’s not practical. It also might alienate who I’m meeting with.”
One of the best pieces of advice he ever got was from one of his former investors was “Dress for equal.” Translation: If you’re going to give a talk to 5th graders, dress on the same level. If you go to J.P. Morgan, you’ll want to add a tailored element. “In chinos, you can do that no matter what,” says Kirshner. “They’re always appropriate.”
Kirschner’s go-to chinos are Dockers Supreme Flex in a slimmer fit because of their flattering shape and comfortable feel. “I’m not a skinny jeans guy, but these have a tailored, tapered feel to them,” he says of his favorite pants. “I have a pair of dark jeans that I used to wear all the time, but they’re so rigid. After having discovered the feel of stretch khakis, it’s tough to decide to put those less comfortable jeans on.”
Extending the relaxed vibe to his whole look, Kirschner prefers to keep his shirt untucked. The key is making sure the bottom of the shirt doesn’t fall lower than your hip.

J.Crew Untucked Secret Wash Shirt, $59.50 at JCrew.com
J.Crew Ludlow Slim-fit Jacket, $300 at JCrew.com

The All-Eyes-on-You Presentation
Getting up in front of a room and pitching your big idea takes confidence, so your clothes should look sharp and have a flattering fit so you know you look your best. Wearing a pattern or color you’re not entirely at ease with will just end up damaging your self-assurance.
“How I feel is most important,” says Kirschner, who has given hundreds of presentations and talks (including a TED Talk viewed more than 1.3 million times) since launching Litterati in 2012. “It doesn’t just mean comfort. I have to love the way it looks and feels. It bolsters my confidence. I will present better.” His default look is an always approachable solid sweater worn with an oxford shirt and a crisp pair of chinos.
One important point not to overlook: Since you may be standing in front of the room, this is no time to roll up long inseams or to try to conceal a bulky shirt that’s drowning your torso in excess fabric. Your clothing should not distract from your message.
“The length and fit has to be right,” adds Marishane, who, at a lanky 6-foot-3, is obsessed with finding the right inseam — and you should be, too. For most men, pant hems should fall below your natural ankle and skim the top of your shoes if you plan to show off some creative sock patterns.
We recommend:
White Heavy Oxford Soft Ivy Button Down, From $19.75 at Amazon.com
Ted Baker Textured Crew Sweater, $175 at TedBaker.com
Dockers Alpha Khaki Pants with 360 Flex, $55 at Dockers.com
Cole Haan Mens 2 Zerogrand Laser Wingtip Oxford Shoes, From $149 at Amazon.com
The Travel Day
If you’re hopping off a plane and headed straight to a meeting, aim for breathable layers you can add or subtract to adjust for temperature changes.
Start with a fine-gauge cotton knit or a moisture-wicking shirt to keep your top half dry and comfortable. Then, extend the same ease to your lower half with stretch trousers in a fabric that regulates your temperature. A good pair of 5-pocket chinos made with all-season tech fabric keep you warmer in cool temperatures and let the steam out when the weather starts to heat up.
“Jeans aren’t very breathable, but lightweight pants are,” says Marishane. Darker colored chinos help conceal any unexpected stains encountered in transit.
But it’s not just about how the pieces feel — it’s also how they move through the hurdles of the day. “I need comfort but also the simplicity when crossing security checks,” adds Marishane. So he skips a belt and adds a lightweight, unlined tailored jacket or bomber layered on top.
Finally, the right slip-on shoes not only feel comfy and are easy to slip on and off on the security line. The athletic grip helps when you need to run to your gate or to your next meeting.

As workplaces get more and more casual, it can be a slippery slope as to what works and what doesn’t. But once you add chinos to your daily rotation, you’re sure to be safe no matter where the day lands you.
