Declan pimped out??? 👀
GOOD CHOICE, OKAY SO
i was listening to this true crime podcast thing on youtube 😂 about a cult, and this one girl got sex trafficked/forced into prostitution to "pay off her debt" to the cult leader
and i had just reread the chapter of GW where Declan retrieved Ronan's body from the care facility, and he thought about Ronan as a "very expensive corpse" and about how he's entirely out of money and can't afford to even buy Matthew a sweetmetal that will get him through the school year, much less one strong enough to wake Ronan up and save both their lives
and then there's boudicca
the fucking MOB full of powerful women who have a stranglehold on the sweetmetal trade
women who, later, essentially call Declan a nice piece of ass but hey let the grown-ups handle business, mmkay?
so, like
you can probably see what this added up to in my brain 😂 Declan needs a sweetmetal and he has nothing left to trade for it but his pretty face. i'm sure there are plenty of associates and clients who would be much more amenable to dealing with them if there was a little treat to sweeten the deal.
if, of course, Declan prove that he's worth the investment. i can't imagine negotiations being closed before the boudicca rep had verified his credentials, and it's not exactly the kind of thing where you can just call up references.
see, this thought began as a spicy little dubcon voyeurism idea, cuz boudicca likely wouldn't even agree to meet with Declan in the first place if he didn't have Jordan along to vouch for him, and thus she would be present when he is pressganged into an audition for his new career. then i thought about it a little too hard and it got real angsty real fast, and i got super invested alkdjfgh
the only thing i've actually WRITTEN for it is, like, ya know how Mstief often starts chapters with a flashback/anecdote? that then sets up a parallel or emotional resonance for what's happening in the current timeline? i wrote that, a Hennessy girls flashback, and then immediately ran out of steam before getting to the present action 😅 but i do love what i have and want to come back to it at some point.
here's a snippet, and though it might not be obvious how it's in any way related to the above premise, i promise it makes sense in the end 😂😂😂:
Being Jordan Hennessy, et al, meant playing to the lowest common denominator. It meant being your worst self because another Jordan Hennessy couldn't be better. One could not live a healthy vegan lifestyle when one shared a name, a face, a body, a social and professional life, with another who could not be relied upon to refrain from scarfing quarter pounders where all and sundry could see. One could not meticulously graft a Mona Lisa smile onto a child's finger painting and expect no one to notice the discrepancy. To be Jordan Hennessy, et all, was to forge oneself into the disaster that was Jordan Hennessy, the original, sloppy brush strokes and all. Consistency is key. This deliberate deconstruction was easier for some of the girls than others. Madox shared the most of Hennessy's vices and thus resembled her in her lowest moments with the fewest sacrifices made. Hennessy's vicious tongue was hers by right of being brought into the world by a thirteen-year-old, as was her recklessness. She was just as eager to drop a match and see what caught. She had her own string of meaningless hookups and didn't much mind swapping out for one of Hennessy's if necessary. She didn't seek out substances to abuse the way Hennessy did, but she was more than happy to get rip-roaringly drunk and do a few lines if they were offered to her. Brooklyn wasn't as keen on destruction. If she had her way, she'd settle all disputes with a good shag. Unfortunately, that was only Hennessy's way some of the time, and so sometimes Brooklyn came back from her turn in public with bruised knuckles or blood on her teeth or the smell of smoke and burnt rubber in her hair. On these occasions, she would be snappish for hours, days if Hennessy opted to poke a sharp stick in the wound. She never bothered to demand an apology for what she'd been made to do by virtue of Hennessy's reputation, though, and Hennessy never offered one. She never offered one to any of them.
.

Ida Olivia Keeling (née Potter, May 15, 1915 – August 25, 2021) was a centenarian track and field athlete. Trained by her daughter Cheryl (Shelley) Keeling, herself a world record holder, she set Masters records in 60-meter and 100-meter distances for women in the 95-99 and 100-plus age groups.
Her story was featured in the documentary If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast, on aging over 90, which premiered in June 2017. She was featured on Our America with Lisa Ling on the Oprah Winfrey Network.
In 2011, she set the world record in her age group for running 60 meters at 29.86 seconds at a track meet in Manhattan and in 2012 she set the W95 American record at the USATF Eastern Regional Conference Championships at 51.85. In 2014, at the 2014 Gay Games, she set the fastest known time by a 99-year-old woman for the 100-meter dash at 59.80 seconds; at the time the relevant USA Track & Field webpage did not include a 100-meter record for US women older than the 90–94 age division.
On April 30, 2016, she became the first woman in history to complete a 100-meter run at the age of 100. Her time of 1:17.33 was witnessed by a crowd of 44,469 at the 2016 Penn Relays.
Her parents, Osborne, and Mary Potter, emigrated to the US from the island of Anegada in the British Virgin Islands. She was raised in Harlem. Her mother died when she was young and her husband died of a heart attack when she was 42. She had four children. Her elder daughter, Laura, worked as the CEO of two National Urban League affiliates. Her younger daughter, Shelley, is a lawyer and real estate investor who coached for a local high school. Shelley coached her mother and first convinced her to run in a “mini-run” at the age of 67.
In the book Can’t Nothing Bring Me Down: Chasing Myself in the Race against Time (2018), by Ida Keeling and Anita Diggs, she explained the secret to her health and fitness, stating she worked out 2-4 times a week and attended dancing classes. Her diet consisted of greens, fruit, and cod liver oil, and she would have Hennessy with her coffee once a week. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Masonry Monday: The Case of the Desperate Daughter
A rancher’s daughter romances an East German stranger to protect her beloved stepmother. When said stranger is murdered, all signs point to the daughter, especially when she seemingly fakes a bout of amnesia. Perry Mason suspects the girl isn’t the only one with reason to murder the stranger -- and he’s correct.
Who’s Who
Perry Mason’s client: Doris Bannister, a lonesome horse girl who’s deeply (almost unhealthily) attached to her stepmother
The victim: Stefan Riker, a mysterious man from East Berlin, who has some kind of hold on Lisa Bannister
Suspects: Edward Bannister, Doris’s father and Lisa’s husband, whose stern and cold demeanor causes tensions with both women Lisa Bannister, the daughter of a Communist leader in East Germany, who would rather die (or possibly more) than return to her homeland Gary Marshall, Bannister’s foreman, who is more than a little interested in having blackmail material on his boss’s wife
The Setup
A station wagon with “Bannister Farms” painted on the door pulls into a cocktail lounge called Hennessy’s. The driver, Gary Marshall, gives Helene the waitress the cold shoulder when she tries to ask why he jilted her. After she storms off, a man with a German accent approaches Gary and asks about the car. Gary says it belongs to his boss. The man introduces himself as Stefan Riker and flashes a photo of a beautiful woman he says he’s looking for. Gary denies knowing the woman, but pockets the photo anyway and leaves.
Shortly after, Gary drives into a secluded glen. He now has a woman in the car with him: His boss’s wife, Lisa Bannister, who’s the woman in the picture. Gary tells her about meeting Riker, but says he covered for her. She thanks him, but he uses this as an opening to try and come onto her, forcing a kiss before she slaps him and asks him to drive her home. Later, he’s standing alongside Ed Bannister, the ranch’s owner, who watches a young horse breeze and coldly tells Gary to get rid of the animal despite Mrs. Bannister’s fondness for it.
Bannister, who walks using two rubber-tipped canes, hobbles into the sitting room where his daughter Doris is reading. She fiercely upbraids him for not properly appreciating Lisa, which is interrupted by the doorbell. Doris answers and admits Riker, who claims to be Lisa’s cousin (Gary watches from a nearby room). Doris cheerfully goes to fetch Lisa while Bannister suspiciously questions Riker about coming from East Germany. Lisa enters and is horrified to see Riker -- especially since Bannister points out Lisa claimed to have no family.
Later that night, Lisa takes a bottle of sleeping pills out of her medicine cabinet and holds several of the pills, staring at them. Doris enters and catches Lisa, knocking the pills out of her hands. She begs Lisa to tell her why she’s so upset. Lisa says she lied about her family being dead -- her father is the leader of a major Communist party in East Germany and Riker is a friend of his. Lisa’s passport was forged, so she’s technically in the country illegally and could be sent back. She says she would rather die than return to Germany, and Doris hugs her and promises to think of something.
At Riker’s home, he answers a knock on the door to a very well-dressed and heavily made-up Doris. The daughter puts on a very forward attitude, though Stefan can tell she’s not as confident as she’s behaving. She tells him that she’s curious about him, and throws herself at him to prove that she’s not scared. Three months later, Riker drives onto the Bannister Ranch -- in spiffy new clothes and a new car -- where Bannister coldly tells him to leave. He says he knows what’s going on and doesn’t want to see Riker at the ranch anymore. Riker clearly isn’t phased by his threats and drives off.
Enter Perry Mason, Attorney at Law
Perry and Della are in the office at 1:30 in the morning, typing up a motion for another murder case. They’re wrapping up when someone opens the door to the outer office. Della goes to investigate and discovers a young woman who’s covered in dirt and looks like she’s been roughed up. She claims not to know who she is, but came to Perry’s office after finding a note in her pocket with his name and office address on it. Della summons Perry, who doesn’t recognize the girl -- she says the first thing she remembers is wondering Sunset Canyon Road. She faints when he tries to probe her memory, and he takes her to the hospital.
The next day, an ad appears in the paper with the young woman’s photo, inquiring if anyone knows who she is. Bannister calls Perry Mason’s office and tells the attorney that the young woman is his daughter, Doris. He explains that she has no friends to identify her, and he only just saw the paper. Given that he’s disabled, he can’t come get Doris, but he asks Perry to do whatever he can for Doris on his behalf. Bannister tells him about Doris seeing Riker, who lives on Sunset Canyon Road. Perry’s going out to see Riker -- it’s reasonable for her crippled father and non-existent friends not to call in sooner, but not for her boyfriend.
Cut to Riker’s body, lying dead on the floor of his living room. Tragg and company are already there. A broken clock lying on the floor next to the body reads shortly after 2. A sergeant hands Tragg some letters, all from Doris. He reads one aloud, where Doris tells Riker to stay away from Lisa because he belongs to her -- Tragg looks understandably uncomfortable. Another sergeant enters carrying a gun with a fractured handle that was found out by the driveway, surmising the killer may have dropped it.
Outside, yet another sergeant is getting pictures of two deep divots in the mud, similar to the feet of a nearby ladder. Tragg believes someone may have been spying on Riker and asks one of the sergeants to go pick up Doris Bannister. Perry and Della see the car drive past, deducing that Riker’s been murdered. In Doris’s hospital room, she can’t answer Perry’s questions but insists her name isn’t Doris. Perry tries to arrange with her doctor to have her moved to a private ward, but Tragg arrives before he can arrange it to post a police guard outside of the door.
Back in Perry’s office, Paul arrives and says he could only ferret the police’s angle on the case: They think Doris murdered Riker in a fit of jealousy, and Perry can’t come up with any counter-theories without Doris’s help. Paul says Burger questioned Doris, who insists she can’t remember anything. Perry notes that amnesia could have been induced by a trauma like an accident: There had to be some reason Doris was wondering on foot on Sunset Canyon Road. If she were driving alone and ran off the road, it would be almost impossible to find the car -- but he asks Paul to try anyway and to find Riker’s “other woman.”
The Murder
Lisa paces anxiously as she and Bannister wait with Perry in the prison meeting room. When a matron arrives with Doris, Lisa tries to embrace her but Doris shies away in fright. She still says she can’t recall anything before arriving at Perry’s office. After the matron takes her away, Bannister again claims it’s an act, but Perry points out she has no reason to fake it if she’s innocent. Bannister tells the story of how he was crippled -- he was thrown from a horse 10 years prior -- claiming he won’t stand for lies. Perry pointedly asks what happened to the horse who threw him: Bannister had it put down. Perry says Doris isn’t going away so easily.
Perry next questions Gary Marshall in Hennessy’s. He claims to be very fond of the Bannisters and says he’d do anything to help them. He also says he didn’t know Riker, only saw him around the ranch. Gary leaves shortly after and Helene the waitress approaches Perry, saying everything Gary said about his fondness for the Bannisters was a lie. He constantly complained about them, and he met Stefan Riker in the lounge many times. Perry gets a call from Paul: He found Doris’s car, which was completely totaled. Perry says he’ll meet Paul on Sunset Canyon Road.
Paul leads Perry out to the car, which is indeed in very bad shape at the bottom of a ditch. However, Perry notes the car is in neutral -- it’s possible someone pushed it off the cliff, or it could have been jarred by the crash. Paul finds a map hidden under the visor: One corner is torn off, and it perfectly matches the scrap of paper Doris carried with Perry’s name written on it. Paul notes Doris likely wrote the note herself. Tragg arrives on the scene, having spotted Perry’s car parked on the road.
The Trial
Hamilton Burger gives his opening statement about Doris’s motive for killing Riker and her apparent faking of amnesia. The first witness is Dr. Forbes, Doris’s doctor who treated her. The doc testifies that, while he initially believed she was suffering from general amnesia, he now believes after subsequent examination that nothing was wrong with her. Burger also asks him about Mason’s apparent intention to have Doris moved to a private sanitarium before the police intervened. Burger gives Mason a dirty look.
On cross, Mason asks what changed the doc’s mind. The doc says Doris was still able to do difficult algebra problems, meaning she likely wasn’t suffering psychosomatic amnesia. Mason pushes that she could be suffering partial amnesia that’s affected her recall but not her problem-solving skills. He also reads a quote from a recent newspaper article, saying that county hospitals are overcrowded, forcing some patients to leave before being properly treated. He asks if Dr. Forbes recognizes the quote. He does -- he’s the one who said it.
Burger presents Tragg with a plaster cast of the ground under Riker’s window, which includes the round divots in the soil. Tragg testifies that they found a nearby ladder, the rubber ferrules of which fit the divots. He also says that, if the ladder was placed in the spot and climbed, the person on it would have an unobstructed view of Riker’s living room. Doris’s fingerprints are on the ladder. Mason stands up and asks to examine the ladder.
On cross, Mason asks whether the fingerprints could have been left earlier -- they could. Tragg also testifies that there were no footprints near the ladder because the stone path would have allowed the person on the ladder to climb it without touching the soil. Mason notes that the ferrules don’t fit the divots precisely, which Tragg notes is due to weight shifting the ladder slightly. Mason asks if this means that both a precise and an imprecise fit somehow both point to the ladder, saying he can’t follow that logic.
Next, Burger calls Lisa to the stand. She’s an adverse witness, so the judge allows Burger to question her closely. He asks her about how she and Doris wrote to each other frequently when they were apart. He presents her with one of the letters to Riker, and asks Lisa if it’s Doris’s handwriting. She tries to avoid answering the question, but eventually has to concede that it is her stepdaughter’s writing. On cross, Mason asks about Lisa’s history with Riker. She hated Riker and begged Doris not to see him. Mason asks about the other woman mentioned in the letter Burger just read, asking if it was Lisa. She denies it, but he keeps after her until she’s nearly in tears.
The Investigation
Later, in jail, Doris is furious with Perry for humiliating Lisa in court. Perry notes that Doris has finally stopped pretending to have amnesia. She impulsively confesses to killing Riker when she visited his house late at night and saw him with another woman. She claims not to know who it was. Perry isn’t buying it, countering that she saw something in the house that made her think Lisa killed him and is trying to protect her stepmother.
Doris finally breaks, saying she visited the house at midnight, and Riker was already dead. In his hand was a gold medallion of Lisa’s -- a gift from Bannister for their anniversary. Doris, believing her stepmother to be the killer, threw the medallion away. She also says she hated Riker and only romanced him to keep him away from Lisa. Perry criticizes her for her childish lies, but he can’t convince her to tell him what Lisa needed protection from. She tells him that, if he tries to expose Lisa, she’ll swear he’s lying.
Later, Perry calls Bannister. He tells Bannister to answer his questions in as simple terms as possible, as he knows Lisa is also in the room. He asks about the medallion, and Bannister says Lisa hasn’t worn it in days. Perry asks him if he can secure a copy of the medallion, but he can’t explain why. He asks Bannister to deliver it to Paul Drake at the Fenway parking lot. The next morning, Gary chauffeurs Bannister to the parking lot, where he meets Paul. He doesn’t have the medallion, but he does have one other, very important piece of evidence . . .
In Summation
After so many episodes of Perry’s client’s doing stupid stuff, we’ve finally reached an episode where I can find a reasonable justification for this: His client in this case is just a teenager. While Doris’s exact age isn’t specified -- and I very, very much hope, given her relationships this episode, that it’s over 18 -- I think her overcomplicated and ridiculous plot to fake amnesia to help her stepmother is proof enough of her youth.
Doris is also, so far, the youngest of Perry’s defendants, and he’s far more patient with her than I would be. As always, Perry goes as far as he’s able to protect his client’s interests, and it’s admirable to see him do so even as he’s privately convinced said client is faking amnesia. Not that this is the first time he’s done so, but I maintain a glimmer of respect for any episode where the primary thing Perry protects the client from is themselves -- even if I think the rest of the episode is kind of crummy.
That’s not to say this episode is crummy. It’s not. It’s just that modern context makes this episode give me the ick. If you separate it from said modern context, there’s an interesting story here about two vulnerable women trying to protect each other in a veritable den of wolves (both the figurative and figurative kind). There’s also some interesting pseudo-historical tension as a man who’s quite possibly a Nazi (or at least a German of dubious standing and intention) preys on the main characters’ family.
Every single man in this episode is pretty terrible. We have Riker, whose intentions aren’t exactly spelled out but who nearly gives Lisa a conniption just by existing. He’s also disturbingly eager to take advantage of a teenage girl (who, again, I’m going to pretend for my own peace of mind was at least of age when all this went down) that he knows has an ulterior motive. We’ve also got Gary Marshall, who assaults Lisa and leaves her under the implicit threat of blackmail after he learns about her from Riker -- whom he almost makes look likeable by comparison.
Then we have Bannister himself. While he doesn’t commit blackmail, extortion, or assault, he still makes an awful first impression by “getting rid of” a young racehorse just because it doesn’t breeze at his expected time. He also mentions later in the episode that he was crippled in a riding accident, and he put down the horse he was riding. Maybe this is just my past coloring my experience, but I find that appalling and not something a true horseperson would do. Even Perry is disgusted and tells Bannister his tactic of shunting the consequences of misfortune onto an innocent won’t work in his daughter’s murder trial.
I’ve watched this episode several times, and there’s always been some question in my mind as to why Doris is so attached to Lisa. She repeatedly claims that Lisa does lots of good things, both at the ranch and for Doris herself, but she never specifies what exactly those good things are. I would have liked to see those, because as it stands there doesn’t seem to be an actual reason why Doris is willing to go to the gas chamber to protect Lisa. The attachment seems borderline unhealthy, at least on Doris’s side.
Speaking of things that aren’t explained to my satisfaction, Riker’s motivation for finding Lisa is also not really expanded upon. We know Lisa is the daughter of an East German Communist political figure, and that she entered the U.S. illegally -- and by the way, I’m curious whether her marriage would solidify her citizenship or whether it would dissolved as being entered into under false pretenses. But it’s not clear what Riker intended to do with that information when he saw Lisa again. Presumably he had blackmail on the brain, but he doesn’t seem to have gone through with it and I don’t buy for a moment that Doris’s seduction was sufficient distraction for such a . . . “worldly” person.
One thing I do like about this, though, is that Gary’s smarminess comes back to bite him in the butt later -- he blows off waitress Helene when she tries to get him to show up to their dates, and later she’s the one to call out his lies to Perry Mason when Gary tries to pretend that he thought the Bannisters were “real swell people.” I like it when a seemingly minor background character comes back and provides key information -- I’m sure Perry could have deduced that he was lying, but it’s always helpful to have reliable witnesses to provide the information, particularly if it comes up in court.
I almost wish there were more horses in this episode. That’s not an uncommon refrain coming from me -- I still enjoy The Case of the Fan Dancer’s Horse if for no other reason than it has a pretty palomino in it. also, it makes sense since California has historically had a very broad horse culture, from racing to Western riding. Bannister’s enterprise seems to be racing horses, but Doris also seems to be an equestrian herself. Like I said, I appreciate any horse footage that makes it into the show, given it was probably pretty expensive to have them on the show at all.
Oh, and one bit of trivia for you: Doris is played by former child actor Gigi Perreau, who had three siblings also involved in the acting business. Two of them, Lauren Perreau and Jimmy Miles, would appear on later episodes of the show. Gigi was only 17 herself when she filmed this (which turns my stomach considering she has to have at least one scene where she seduces Werner Klemperer, who was over 20 years her senior. I’m not gonna say Hollywood has come a long way, but goddamn at least I don’t have to get quite so icked out.
The Verdict
Judgement: ⚖⚖ (two scales out of four) The client throws up the mother of all roadblocks and no one bothers to call out her strange behavior. The family dynamic is unhealthy all the way down, though the stepmother does her best to make things easier. The only one who’s even remotely likeable is the Communist blackmailer murder victim.

Lisa x Louis Vuitton
Shortly after releasing her new solo single "Rockstar," Lisa from Blackpink officially became the house ambassador for Louis Vuitton. In the premiere video, she is seen wearing the Women's Fall-Winter 2024 Collection by Nicolas Ghesquière, Louis Vuitton’s artistic director of women’s collections. Speaking about the collaboration, she expressed her admiration for Louis Vuitton's originality and felt honored to be part of this endeavor to maintain the originality.
Previously, it had been speculated that Lisa would collaborate with Louis Vuitton. As early as 2020, Lisa served as the global ambassador for Celine, which is also a part of the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton group. At Paris Fashion Week in March of this year, Lisa made a surprise appearance in the front row of Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2024 show, wearing a floral-embroidered jacket and carrying the Pic Trunk handbag. In her new song "Rockstar," the lyrics also mention the brand - "Tight dress, LV sent it. Lisa reppin' "
Although the announcement was not surprising, Nicolas Ghesquière still expressed his excitement about the collaboration. He mentioned that Lisa's daring spirit and charisma align with the brand's ethos. Lisa's bold fashion sense perfectly showcases the individuality and empowerment that Louis Vuitton's women's wear represents.

Scarlett and the Professor
[continued from]
“Then teach me, please. Give me the answer I need,” Scarlett insisted quietly. “It’s the real reason you brought me here tonight, isn’t it?”
“Yes...oh yes, Scarlett,” he murmured, laying just the fingertips of his right hand against her neck and softly tracing along her cheekbone with his thumb, “Although I think you might know the answer already---but it seems to me that you’ve buried the notion in the depths of your mind, for it defies rational thought.”
His eyes, like his voice, had gone utterly soft, as she barely shook her head in denial. Her brow creased with consternation, Scarlett parted her lips but words still seemed to fail her, “I...I don’t know what you mean, Professor...I swear that...that I don’t have a clue...”
“My dear little...hmmmm...” Hennessy’s lips were pressed together in an enigmatic smile that rivaled the Mona Lisa’s. “My little water nymph. Quiet your doubts and fears and simply listen. Trust what your heart already knows to be true.”
Scarlett closed her eyes, trying to do as her teacher bid, focusing on the steady sounds of the waves and on the soothing touch of his fingers, instead of the insistent voice of reason. Though she came from a culture rich in folk tales, myths, and legends, she was also a child of the 21st century, with access to the finest of educations and the most advanced technologies. Yet here he was---a brilliant, highly educated man---asking her to forsake reality and embrace the...fantastical. Alright then...I must call it what it is. Either I’ve gone quite mad, and none of this is real...or...or...
Her eyes shot open at the impossible conclusion. “It’s...magic?”
Hennessy was nodding and sounding pleased, “Of a sort, yes...”
“Magic is...real?”
“Real. And though as rare a hen’s teeth, older than civilization itself.”
Concerned that he was teasing her, playing upon her obvious naivete, taunting her as a fool, Scarlett studied his face carefully. She saw not a trace of irony, nor even the smallest hint of amusement at her expense. While her mind continued to revolt against the very notion, her heart---already entangled fathoms deep with everything he presented himself to be---insisted he was revealing a truth she was meant to learn eventually. The mysteries of her past suddenly made far more sense if the world allowed for the true existence of the paranormal.
“And there it is,” he observed, reading her reluctant acceptance as it stole across her face. “I knew you were bright enough to understand, m’dear. And I’ll wager something of the...supernatural...touched your life long before we met. Before you ever came to this place. Very likely before you even finished primary school.” Hennessy’s unwavering conviction and uncanny insight left a wave of relief washing over her. “I don’t need the slightest bit of magic to see that that is true.”
Hearing the long-held secret that he had guessed, goosebumps broke out across her skin. “Yes...yes...and heaven help me, yes,” she exclaimed in surprise, “But I’ve never shared that with a single soul in the world.” Well, only with my confessor, the Sea.
He nodded, having become the absolute picture of patience, while Scarlett felt the circle of water around them finally recede. “Come sit with me a while, love---I’ll tell you a bit of my experience if you’re willing to tell me a bit of yours.”
___________________________________________
“...of course, this is not ‘magic’...” Hennessy framed the word in air quotes, “...as it’s understood by the world at large. That is an illusion perpetrated by charlatans and con men and entertainers.” Scarlett was grateful for the clear sky, for the light of the waning gibbous moon allowed for her to read his face well enough to know he was being quite frank. “Like most practitioners of true magic, I come to it through a blood connection--though such powers are latent, and require active cultivation.” He paused for a couple of breaths, allowing her to digest the concept. “My mother is what we call an Elemental Sorceress---a fairly powerful one at that. Meaning that I, like her, have some control over the elements. Air, Fire, Earth. And as you have seen for yourself, Water.”
Having grown up in a household where ancient Celtic superstitions dwelled side by side with the tenants and strictures of Roman Catholicism, the very concept of sorcery raised her hackles as something to be feared for the sake of her immortal soul. And yet, it made sense to her, as though the existence of magic was one of several missing puzzle pieces that could offer a full explanation of her past.
Hennessy watched her, waiting as she wrapped her mind around such an astonishing truth, before continuing this strange, unlooked for lesson. “It shouldn’t surprise you that my strongest skill lies with Water---or that it’s my favorite.”
He bit his lip at that, looking so amused that a sudden warmth spread from her belly on down as she remembered what he’d done to her. “That’s...that’s an amazing skill, my jo,” she nearly whispered.
His hearty laugh warmed her as well, and he added, “And one that I’ve elevated to a fine art, don’t you agree, little lamb?”
Scarlett nodded, wide-eyed and solemn, so that he broke into his most wolfish grin. “But there’s even more to it, isn’t there?” Her instincts were awakened now, her need to know the truth of her own connection to the supernatural enough to override her incredulity.
“Much more,” he affirmed, “More than even I had imagined before I made this place my home.” He narrowed his exotic, ever-compelling eyes, probably reading her to decide if she was ready to hear more. “And Scarlett, I have a strong hunch that it’s a good part of the reason that you found your way here as well.”
‘Nah,” she scoffed, “Twas only that my Da thought a semester or two here might do me well...”
“Then perhaps your Da knows a thing or two he hasn’t told you yet,” he speculated---and then seeing the stubborn set of her brow, left off that topic for the moment. “Regardless, here you are in this very unique place, where elemental magic is just one of many extraordinary things to flourish.”
“One of...many,” Scarlett repeated, not yet completely convinced, “Just how many?”
Hennessy laid his long index finger across his lip, considering his reply carefully. “Well- almost as many as those who live on campus and in the community at large. You could say this island is a supernatural nexus of sorts...”
“Like the Bermuda Triangle?”
He grimaced, “ I suppose you might say that---but I wouldn’t. At least not in front of anyone native to the island...”
Scarlett nodded, choosing not to question that grim sounding assessment, so that he continued, “This place draws the preternatural and mysterious to it. Welcomes it, nurtures it, if you will---and makes all sorts of magic easier to wield...”
“Well, I’m no sorceress,” she protested, chewing her lip thoughtfully, “I mean, I have experienced moments of...crystal clarity...which seem to strike me out of the blue. Strong feelings about what is going to happen. And...well...I’ve always had a sort of...intuition...about...” Scarlett shrugged and finished with a sheepish smile, “...about...people...”
Hennessy took her hand and slowly ran his thumb back and forth across her knuckles, the soft regard in his eyes making her weak as it always did. “Qualities which I assure you, Scarlett dear, are both uncommon and extraordinary. Even in a place that plays host to descendants of creatures out of legends and myths.” He twined his long fingers through hers. “My intuition tells me that something of the supernatural has more than touched you.”
Scarlett looked out at the dark expanse of the ocean, its gentle swells so close to shore, and even it’s smallest ripples, glittering with moonlight. She closed her eyes and drew several deep breaths, simply listening. Listening for the whisper beyond the rhythm of the waves, searching for the quiet voice she had heard so often in her youth. In those days, the Sea had never failed to give her the answers she sought---but these days, wrapped up in the trappings of adulthood, she had convinced herself that those times were the imaginings of a child’s mind providing her with the simple comfort she could not find elsewhere.
Now she spoke aloud, though the words were far more for her own sake than to answer his theory. “When I was young...as a child and...in those awkward, teenage years...I always felt most comfortable and most at peace ...at the water’s edge. In those days, the Sea was almost...like a mother to me.” Despite the balmy, evening air, Scarlett was shivering as the truths she had hidden away in the past several years as mere childish fancies, came back to her at last. “But at the same time, I sometimes felt I could never go too far from the safety of the shore. That it...that if I went too deep, I might never find my way...” She shuddered with the realization, “my way home.”
Hennessy traced the shell of her ear with his free hand and then rested it against her neck. For once, his skin was warmer than hers, so that she looked to him with a sudden longing to have him hold her and warm her. Warm her through and through, and assure her that she was safe with him here, where the sand mingled with the surf. Scarlett’s eyes welled over with salty tears seeing the patience and understanding in Hennessy’s. “Can you imagine how it was for me as a child...to both love and fear such...such a huge, ever-present aspect of Nature? One that loomed so large in my little world?” Her floodgates had finally opened, for a single soul that had the vision to ask. “To find joy and comfort in the ocean’s embrace, to feel it was where I belonged---but also to understand at the age of five that it had the deadly power to steal my breath? My very life?”
How tenderly he thumbed her tears away, how gently he drew her to him---as though he had known her secrets already, and had only been waiting for her to share it out loud. “I can,” he told her, brushing a kiss on the crown of her head, still holding her close, “Our experiences are not so dissimilar, love---though I had a parent knowing enough to guide me through those growing pains.”
“You? You knew such fear?”
“Very like.” Hennessy drew a long sigh, answering so softly that Scarlett would wonder later if she’d imagined it. “Though I feared what lay within me more than I ever could the Sea...”
His warmth and solidity braced her well as her memories continued to engulf her reason. “There were awful, terrible dreams too,” she revealed, “As far back as I can remember. That there was something dark and sinister waiting for me out there in the depths. They only went away in the past few years.” That they had recently returned, Scarlett would not, could not, share with him just yet.
Hennessy hummed quietly as he considered her revelations. “I’m remembering all your sweet and saucy missives, from before we’d shared even a single kiss, little lamb. And how you’ve admitted that you were drawn to me from the moment you entered my classroom.” His voice remained calm and even, surely meant to further soothe her. “Given the many ties that also bind me to the Sea, this can be no coincidence.”
She nodded against him, too overcome by that implication to reply.
“Cleary, the roots of this mystery are what brought you to these shores.” He tightened his arms around her and she drew deep of his scent and strength and certainty. “And perhaps I can help you solve it one of these days. But for tonight, it’s best to let this rest---don’t you agree, my sweet jo?”
“Oh yes, please,” Scarlett answered, slipping her arms around his neck, her trust in his wisdom absolute. “Please,” she whispered as he lowered her onto her back, and loomed above her so that, fleetingly, the moon appeared to be a halo behind his head.
This time, the love he made to her was slow and sweet, their combined rhythm an exquisite counterpoint to the beat of the waves. In the end, Scarlett’s cries of pleasure rose full and shamelessly from her heart, to be caught upon the breeze and float their way out above the warm salt water---traces of which she now knew flowed through both their veins.
